- How to use Google Classroom to Submit Recorded Singing and Playing Assignments
This is a guest post by one of our blog writers, Sarah Taylor .
Streamlining student data collection the easy way
One afternoon, I was sitting at my desk in my chorus classroom. My 6th graders had just left. The high school girls ensemble was after my planning period. I was preparing for a meeting with my administrator who wanted an update on my data-driven goals. To me, data equaled paperwork.
I loaded my students with exit tickets, quizzes, worksheets and journals. Now, as I sat surrounded by stacks of student work that had data that meant very little to my actual goals, I had a burning desire to shove it ALL in the trash can. I had to do something different.
Our school was a G Suite for Education school, and several of my colleagues had begun to utilize Google Classroom, so I decided to take a look at it to see if I could use its features to help my students become better singers.
Ultimately, I decided to use it because I could collect recordings of students to help them improve their vocal techniques. I was optimistic about this tech tool because it works on a variety of devices. Also, itâs connected to Google drive, so students can collect their recordings over the years in one place to see growth over time.
I set up my Google Classroom with a few clicks. Then, I invited my students to my Classroom using their school email addresses. Next, I created the first assignment by clicking the classwork tab and the CREATE button.
Introducing students to our new system
Now to get the students on board. I picked a day and told the students it was going to be device day. I asked students to bring in a preferred device and be able to access Google Classroom. I also told the students that if they didnât have a device they wanted to use, I would have the schoolâs chromebook cart available for students to use.
On device day, I made sure every student was in Google classroom. I gave them some expectations and procedures, and I explained how we would be using Google classroom for a variety of assignments and to host practice resources and vocal recordings. I also explained how making vocal recordings would help them be better singers and would help me be a better teacher too.
Which recording apps do students use?
Our first recording day, the students brought their devices either from home or checked out from the school. To make the recordings, students could use whatever video or audio recording apps they wanted.
We have found that the camera app that comes on Chromebooks, smartphones and tablets works the best. Some students used the Voice Memo app, Photo Booth app (on a Mac laptop) or even GarageBand. But truly, any app that allows students to save a video recording to the camera roll OR would allow a video or audio track to be uploaded to Google drive will work.
The best way to put students at ease when recording!
Hereâs the best part. I tell the kids they arenât making a recording of their face. I have them hold their device close to their mouth with the camera pointing either to the floor or ceiling. That really sets them at ease. If they have a chromebook, they can use a headset with a microphone.
Then we all sing the song TOGETHER! I mean, do we ever expect our students to sing a choral work by themselves? NO! Because the device is close to them, it picks up their voice louder than the voices surrounding them.
How to upload recordings to Google Classroom
After we are done singing, the students follow the steps below to upload their videos to the assignment in Google Classroom. (Both Chromebook and iOS tips are below)
First, the student will open the assignment and click the word ADD and then FILE (or add attachment on iOS)
On a Chromebook it looks like this:
On an iOS device it looks like this:
Second, click SELECT FILE FROM DEVICE. (on iOS click the location of the recording – the camera roll or google drive)
On Chromebooks:
Select the video and click OPEN. (on iOS click CHOOSE) After the video uploads, the students click TURN IN to submit their video assignment.
The Feedback and Evaluation Process
Letâs talk about feedback and evaluation. We submit recordings 2-3 times per grading period. Sometimes we record the same song twice and other times it will be different repertoire.
Grading is a snap because you can do it all in Google Classroom. I donât always listen to the whole song, but just long enough to give direction. I try to provide 2 points of feedback in the private comment explaining something they did well and something they can improve. If you find yourself repeating the same suggestions, Google Classroom has a âComment Bankâ feature.
At the end of a marking period or after a concert, the students listen to their recordings from this year. By using venn diagrams, rubrics, or question prompts, the students are able to compare their recordings and make notes about areas of improvement and set goals for themselves Think about what you want them to observe and learn from their recordings, and give them a tool that will help them do it.
We all know it takes time to set up, collect data and evaluate it, but using Google Classroom helps me streamline the process. I have great anecdotal notes and data from rubrics to share with my administrators.
Encouraging the growth mindset
Furthermore, this process gives me the chance to teach growth mindset to my students. People rarely like hearing their voice on a recording the first time! But when I give the students objective things to think about and allow them to see themselves as a growing and maturing artist who is working to improve their vocal technique, theyâre less likely to say, âIâm so cringey!â
After doing this for several years, I have high school students who can take a listen to their middle school recordings and see a marked improvement. And more than that it gives me a chance to have positive personal conversations and give student-specific feedback. Sharing data that celebrates community can be very motivating as the students see themselves approaching goals and improving.

Hello, I love your idea of using Classroom to record students and collect assessment data! I also love using Google Classroom and I have been using it a lot in the past few years which has helped me to go paperless. How do you manage Google Classroom when you teach more than one class of students? I will be teaching Music to students in Grades 1-8 this year, and I am planning to use Google Classroom with students in Grades 6-8. There will be about two classes in each grade. Any thoughts of having students working on and submitting assignments, recording themselves in Google Classroom when the numbers are more than a class set? Should I open Google Classroom for each class or I can invite them all in one Classroom……
Hello Dance! Most teachers just set up separate classes inside their Google Classroom account. So you could have an overall Google Classroom account which has 2 grade 6 classes, 2 grade 7 classes and 2 grade 8 classes inside it to keep all the assignments organised. The other option would be to just have one Google class for grade 6, one for grade 7 and one for grade 8. It really depends how you would like to organise the student work, and whether each class size is big or small. To set up new/additional classes inside Google Classroom, you click on the plus button on the top right and choose Create Class. Hope that helps!

Does anyone know how to use Google Classroom to create a video presentation of a dance class?
Benita – do you mean you want to share the video in Google Classroom? You would create the video first and then either upload to Google Drive or upload to Youtube. Then share the link to that video inside Google Classroom.
Wow! This is Amazing – Thank you so much for sharing! Once you have the recorded voices, is it possible to put them together for a choir song? While in this isolation period for Covid 19, our school choir wants to record a song together but on the computers there is an internet delay causing problems with the synchronization. Would this be a way we can record individually and then put it all together? Please help đ Thanks again, Marian Windsor [email protected]

How Music Teachers Save Time on Assessment with SubmitÂ
Screencastify Submit is the easiest way for any teacher to request and collect videos from students. And itâs something that the music education community has taken note of.
Music teachers (and teachers of all kinds) leverage Submit to give students a way to share their voice and creativity by recording a video from nearly any device. And for music teachers specifically, itâs the best way to efficiently assess students in performance-based classes and gauge each studentâs progress asynchronously and outside of the classroom, which is a huge saver of class time.Â
Michelle Schettler-Stein, orchestra teacher at Monticello Public School District , knows the challenges of evaluating nearly 300 students through different avenues. Thatâs why she utilizes Submit in her classrooms.
âBeing an orchestra teacher and having a class that is very performance based, [Submit] is how I am able to check in individually on each student. I love the fact that with Screencastify, I can share a specific link to an assignment with all of the details of how much I need and what I'm looking for.âÂ
Because of the toolâs simplicity for teachers and their students, Michelle has received thousands of video recordings created by her students. Submit enables one-click recording for students or anyone else who receives the video assignment and follows the generated âmagic linkâ. The recipient doesnât need to create an account, or install an extension or app, and they can use any device with a camera to create their video, so theyâre not locked into any ecosystem.Â
Submit is also integrated and organized directly with Google for added simplicity.Â
âI teach middle school and high school kids. And especially for middle schoolers ⌠the one-click thing is just where it's at,â Michelle said. âIf a student sends me a Submit and they are way off the mark or they didn't understand something, I use Screencastify myself to record those techniques and say, âOK look, this is what needs to actually happen. Let's try that again.â So they have the audio and video at the same time with that specific feedback for that student.â

Efficient assessment for more personalized music lessonsÂ
In addition to helping save time, Submit has allowed Hillary Eisenman, elementary music educator at Lower Moreland Township School District , to make sure her in-class instruction is personalized to the needs of her students â even with a large class size. Students submitting videos of their playing regularly means she knows who needs extra support in class, and what concepts are trickier for the group. Submit has even allowed her to make in- and out-of-class video assignments a central part of her curriculum. Meanwhile, she is able to make an orchestra or band â karate unit â to assess students without the need to listen to them each play individually in real-time.
These student recordings also serve as a way for students to build a musical portfolio that makes for a digital time capsule, but also shows their progress throughout the year.
âI can always search for [any] kid and see their progress,â Hillary said. âA kid hits record, plays, and then they submit it. Then I go through the videos and I send them emails back with details and make a little note on my chart like, âOh, they need help with this rhythm or they need help with this noteâ so that when the class comes back, I then can tailor the beginning part of my instruction.Â
This is something Michelle echoes â Submit simply makes assessment easier for teachers.
âStarting from âHere's my instrument and here's how I hold it â I don't know how to do anything else with it,â to the end of the third year, and they're able to play something. They can look back at those old videos and have concrete evidence of learning. And I have concrete evidence of being able to justify a grade, too, for a parent, âListen to this. This is why they got what they got.â
That type of performance evaluation that canât always be done live can be key to helping students reach their full potential.
â âI can specifically say, âOK so I know some kids are having trouble with this part. I listened to this video and that and you're so close to passing that song. Here's what we have to work on,â â Hillary added.
Privacy-first assignments for virtual one-on-one learning
For some students, that live aspect of performing can be intimidating. Submit gives students a way to have a âliveâ performance (at school or at home) evaluated without an actual live audience, which can be key in building confidence.
And its security features allow it to be toggled to let students only see their own video, which is why Screencastify is the choice for many teachers over alternatives that allow students to view each othersâ videos.
âI know some people that [use] Flip, but it doesnât suit my purpose. Everything in Screencastify is perfect for me,â Hillary added, while pointing out Submit also works for group settings."
âIn chorus rehearsal, everybody opens up their Chromebook and clicks record, and then we all warm up together as a large group. But at the end when they hit Submit, I can then, instead of listening to each kid individually and taking four or five rehearsals to hear each kid individually, I then can go through the videos on my own. And if there's something I'm not sure about, then I can work with kids one-on-one in person.â
Michelle added that in her orchestra class, being able to record a performance from home is a benefit for students, but it can also be a powerful tool when teachers are absent.
âI will teach to my camera, and give the wait time for them to do the thing that I'm asking them to do.
"So it makes it really easy for a substitute teacher to just push play and all they have to do is monitor the students. The students are getting the lesson content that I need them to get for that day.â
â Related: See our video on how Screencastify uses Submit for support below!
Simply Submit
In the end, simplicity is what keeps music teachers coming back to create more assignments with Screencastify Submit even as theyâve returned to the classroom permanently.
âI used to have to hunt kids down at recess and lunch to hear them individually,â Hillary said. âAnd now because I had no other choice but find something during COVID this has been a complete life changer just for my regular instruction. Even though we're in person now, it saves so much time with music assessment.
"And this is with third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders that I use this with, so it just makes things very easy â they don't have to know anything other than click record, click submit.â

The MakeMusic Blog
Tips and news for musicians, educators, and composers, create video assignments in makemusic cloud.
We are excited to share our newest exciting feature update: the ability to capture video in assignments. Keep reading to learn more about how it works!Â
Now, when teachers create assignments, they will be able to select if the assignment should be audio only or include student video. Use the new Video option toggle to turn on video for an assignment and then continue through the assignment creation process as normal. Note: this new feature is not available for any sight-reading assignments at this time.
When students open a video assignment, they will be prompted to enable camera access.
Students will also need to enable camera permissions on Chrome or Safari to allow access to the camera.
Within a video assignment, students have the autonomy to turn the camera on and off. If a student fails to submit a recording that a teacher is requiring, the assignment can be reassigned.
Students can also Hide the video during a recording to minimize distractions as desired.
When reviewing a recording, students can slow the tempo down to more clearly hear how they are playingâthe video and audio will slow down simultaneously and stay in sync with one another and the music notation!Â
Assignment submissions work the same way for students. They can select their best recording and easily submit it to their teacher. When teachers receive a submission, they have access to view the video and can slow the tempo down to better inspect technique while keeping the audio, video, and notation in sync (and with excellent quality!). Teachers can also download student video recordings the same way they can already download audio submissions. Learn more about video download types here .Â
What to do with this new featureÂ
We are looking forward to exploring all of the creative ways that you use this new feature! To get you started here are a few quick ideas:Â
- Add a rubric item for posture or hand position that can be assessed with a video assignmentÂ
- Check for appropriate alternate fingering usageÂ
- Marching Band: this tool is a great way to individually assess student execution of visuals, horn moves, and choreographyÂ
- Create a fun assignment with a theme to dress up to – may the best costume win! Â

Submitting an assignment.
To submit your assignment, follow these steps.
NOTE: To rename a file or folder on the Mac, click on its name or icon, press the return key so that the name is editable, then type.
- Log onto Canvas , and navigate to this course (called “Z361” in Canvas).
- Click on the Assignments button on the left side of the page.
- Click on the name of this assignment in the list in the main part of the page. You then should see a page for just this assignment.
- Click on Submit Assignment on the right side of the page.
- In the File Upload section, use the Choose File button (or simply drag a file onto this button) to set a file for submission. If the assignment requires you to submit more than one file, click the Add Another File link, and do it again. (Exercise A, Assignment 3, and the Final Project require you to submit multiple files.)
- For Exercise A and the Final Project only, you must submit a description as a plain text (.txt), RTF (.rtf), or Word (.doc, .docx) file.
NOTE: Be sure to set up all required files before clicking the Submit Assignment button. If you resubmit your assignment later, the resubmitted files will replace ALL of the files you already submitted.
When the submission is complete, you will see the assignment page again. If this does not happen after a reasonable amount of time, let the instructor know. It will take longer (perhaps much longer) for assignments that include audio files, such as Assignment 3 (part 3), Assignment 4, and the Final Project.
- On the right side of the assignment page, you can click the Submission Details link to see what you uploaded.

This weekend, many will tune in for the Peopleâs Choice Awards , which airs live on Sunday, Feb. 18.
But this year wonât be the same as usual, because two brand new country awards will be added to the vast roster of categories.
The news comes in the wake of the first-ever Peopleâs Choice Country Awards , which pulled in a lot of viewers last year, inspiring NBC to add four new awards to the lineup.
Two of the new awards are âCountry Male Artist of the Yearâ and âCountry Female Artist of the Year.â
Vying for the award in the menâs category are: Chris Stapleton, Cody Johnson, HARDY, Jelly Roll, Kane Brown, Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, and Zach Bryan.
In the womenâs category the nominees are: Ashley McBryde, Carly Pearce, Carrie Underwood, Gabby Barrett, Kelsea Ballerini, Lainey Wilson, Megan Moroney, and Shania Twain.
