55 Fun Sight Word Activities That Work
It’s a myth that blindly memorizing every letter in a sight word is the only way to learn it.
Teachers are always on the hunt for great sight word activities. Sight words are any words readers recognize automatically “by sight”—for fluent readers, that’s almost all words! High-frequency words, the most commonly occurring words in written English, like those on the Dolch list , are often thought of as the most crucial sight words.
It’s a myth that blindly memorizing every letter in a sight word is the only way to learn it. The science of reading tells us that linking sounds and letters is the most effective way for kids’ brains to learn any word. Many common words are easy to tackle using beginning phonics skills (like “at,” “can,” “him,” etc.), so staying true to a strong phonics curriculum is one way to support kids’ sight word learning. Even irregularly spelled words have decodable parts, e.g., kids can use the sounds of “s” and “d” to help with “said,” even if the “ai” is unexpected. Experts often call these words “heart words” to call out for kids that they should learn the unexpected word parts “by heart.” (If all this is unfamiliar to you, it can feel overwhelming, but you’ve got this! Check out teaching guru Jillian Starr’s explanation for more help.)

What Are Sight Words?
Sight words are words you can read by sight, without sounding out phonetically.
Sight words are made up of the most commonly used words. These are the words your child will come across in books the most often, which means committing them to memory will increase their reading speed and confidence.
Many sight words are also words that are nearly impossible to sound out. Words like one, said, does, could and should. Imagine how frustrating it is for a child who only knows how to sound out words phonetically to come across one of these words in a book or sentence!

These sight word worksheets are easy to download and to use.
All you have to do is print and you have a ready made activity to practice reading common words!
You can choose to do one worksheet a day or focus on a word per week.

Sight words can be tricky for a child who is learning to read. These are words that are so common that children should learn to quickly recognize them by sight, rather than ‘sounding them out’. Some of these words cannot be “sounded out” using phonetic principles. Our worksheets assist a child in learning to quickly recognize these sight words.

December 11, 2015 at 11:06 am
I would like to first start off by saying, ‘THIS IS A FANTASTIC SITE”. I am a special education teacher and am ALWAYS surfing the web for interesting, through, in depth, learning sights for my students various domains of learning. This sight is a God sent! It is not shallow like so many other sights listed on the web. The information is attractive, filled with learning, writing, practice writing, motor skill development (fine, large) coloring, reading, vocabulary and spelling. Whom ever the developers for this sight are I salute them from one educator to another.
I have one request, while making packing for the various grade level of my students… I have printed out the coloring name pages; can you insert also the months, of the year, and the days of the week worksheets for me. I would count it a special favor if this is possible. A devoted teacher to this site from this day forward!
PS. This site will be one of the first sites I go to to find critical learning worksheet material for my students K-3. Again, thanks!!!

These second grade sight word worksheets go even deeper than your typical flash card rote memory practice. Students are getting more opportunities to build, read, and write sight words. You can even have them complete their worksheets in colored pencil, crayon, or market to add creativity and engagement.
Using the Sight Word Worksheets
To use the free printable second grade sight word worksheets, students will begin by reading the sight word of focus. They will move on and trace the word, following the arrows to ensure they’re writing the word with proper technique and directionality. Then they’ll write the word on the line.
Next up, students get to use their artistic talents as they decorate the word written in bubble letters. They will become word detectives next as they search, find, and circle the sight word hidden in the word search. Using magnifying glasses and highlighters for this activity would be super fun for them!
After that, the students will look at the letters of the alphabet and color in the letters that spell the sight word. To wrap up the sight word practice, they’ll fill in the missing letters in the words at the bottom of the worksheet to spell the word correctly.
As you can see, there are a lot of great sight word learning opportunities in each sight word worksheet. Effective learning, fast prep, and easy differentiation makes for a perfect sight word activity!
