Interesting public speaking topics can range from controversial to informative, from historical to present day, from fun to serious. When selecting a topic , it’s important to consider the interests of your audience as well as what you can provide appropriate supporting information on. Controversial or opinion-based topics can be engaging, but it’s important that all sides of the argument are presented fairly and no one in the audience is disparaged or excluded. Additionally, providing both sides of an argument here helps inform your audience and may even expose them to different perspectives. Informative topics are great for teaching audiences about specific subjects or movements, while delivering the information in an entertaining and interesting way. Explain how each piece fits into the bigger picture and build suspense throughout your talk. Additionally, if you have personal stories associated with the topic, by all means include them; these stories help make your presentation more memorable and engaging for your audience. Historical topics provide excellent fodder for a public speaking engagement; beyond teaching about specific events that occurred in our past, you can also shed light on important dates in history or major events of the past century. Providing context helps bring to life lessons from those points in time that still influence us today. Current events are also great platforms for public speaking – highlighting what is happening now provides a powerful connection between speaker and audience as everyone is probably equally (or almost equally) knowledgeable about it—and if not? You get to teach them! When presenting current events as your topic, make sure you use up-to-date sources and highlight any compliance changes or other political matters that could affect your audience directly. Depending on the agenda and purpose of the speech, current events can be used either to inform and educate the audience or to galvanize support and motivate action. When dealing with current events, speakers should strive to remain impartial while bringing forth both sides of the argument. For example, if the event is to discuss international trade policy in light of recent tariffs disputes between major trading partners, speakers should present both advantages and disadvantages of increased tariffs. Understanding the core issue at hand without commenting on the efficacy of each side’s policies is key in order to maintain an impartial outlook. Similarly, when addressing a complex social issue like discrimination against minority groups or income equality, it is important to provide a sober and nuanced overview of the issue while ensuring that all sides are properly represented. Naturally, as certain issues become particularly salient in the public debate , more detailed analysis may be necessary in order to provide a full account of the situation. With that said, presenters must always exercise caution when discussing hot-button topics so as not to alienate any portion of their audience. Finally, speakers may choose to conclude their discussion by proposing a plan for action or connecting their topic with wider implications for society. As such, choosing current events as one’s topic allows for an opportunity to create real change that can have tangible benefits for members of their audience. Are you struggling to find good persuasive speech topics? It can be hard to find a topic that interests both you and your audience, but in this guide we've done the hard work and created a list of 105 great persuasive speech ideas. They're organized into ten categories and cover a variety of topics, so you're sure to find one that interests you.

In addition to our list, we also go over which factors make good persuasive speech topics and three tips you should follow when researching and writing your persuasive speech.

What Makes a Good Persuasive Speech Topic?

What makes certain persuasive speech topics better than others? There are numerous reasons, but in this section we discuss three of the most important factors of great topics for a persuasive speech.

It's Something You Know About or Are Interested in Learning About

The most important factor in choosing and creating a great persuasive speech is picking a topic you care about and are interested in. You'll need to do a lot of research on this topic, and if it's something you like learning about, that'll make the process much easier and more enjoyable. It'll also help you sound passionate and informed when you talk, both important factors in giving an excellent persuasive speech.

It's a Topic People Care About

In fourth grade, after being told I could give a persuasive speech on any topic I wanted to , I chose to discuss why the Saguaro cactus should be the United State's national plant. Even though I gave an impassioned talk and drew a life-size Saguaro cactus on butcher paper to hang behind me, I doubt anyone enjoyed the speech much.

I'd recently returned from a family vacation to Arizona where I'd seen Saguaro cacti for the first time and decided they were the coolest thing ever. However, most people don't care that much about Saguaro cacti, and most people don't care what our national plant is or if we even have one (for the record, the US has a national flower, and it's the rose).

Spare yourself the smattering of bored applause my nine-old self got at the end of my speech and choose something you think people will be interested in hearing about. This also ties into knowing your audience, which we discuss more in the final section.

It Isn't Overdone

When I was in high school, nearly every persuasive speech my classmates and I were assigned was the exact same topic: should the drinking age be lowered to 18? I got this prompt in English class, on standardized tests, in speech and debate class, etc. I've written and presented about it so often I could probably still rattle off all the main points of my old speeches word-for-word.

You can imagine that everyone's eyes glazed over whenever classmates gave their speeches on this topic. We'd heard about it so many times that, even if it was a topic we cared about, speeches on it just didn't interest us anymore.

The are many potential topics for a persuasive speech. Be wary of choosing one that's cliche or overdone. Even if you give a great speech, it'll be harder to keep your audience interested if they feel like they already know what you're going to say.

An exception to this rule is that if you feel you have a new viewpoint or facts about the topic that currently aren't common knowledge. Including them can make an overdone topic interesting. If you do this, be sure to make it clear early on in your speech that you have unique info or opinions on the topic so your audience knows to expect something new.

We made sure to choose topics that aren't overdone, yet that many people will have an interest in, and we also made a point of choosing topics with multiple viewpoints rather than simplistic topics that have a more obvious right answer (i.e. Is bullying bad?). 3 Bonus Tips for Crafting Your Persuasive Speech

Of course, giving a great persuasive speech requires more than just choosing a good topic. Follow the three tips below to create an outstanding speech that'll interest and impress your audience.

Do Your Research

For a persuasive speech, there's nothing worse than getting an audience question that shows you misunderstood the issue or left an important piece out. It makes your entire speech look weak and unconvincing.

Before you start writing a single word of your speech, be sure to do lots of research on all sides of the topic. Look at different sources and points of view to be sure you're getting the full picture, and if you know any experts on the topic, be sure to ask their opinion too.

Consider All the Angles

Persuasive speech topics are rarely black and white, which means there will be multiple sides and viewpoints on the topic. For example, for the topic "Should people be allowed to own pit bulls?" there are two obvious viewpoints: everyone should be allowed to own a pit bull if they want to, and no one should be allowed to own a pit bull. But there are other options you should also consider: people should only own a pit bull if they pass a dog training class, people should be able to own pit bulls, but only if it's the only dog they own, people should be able to own pi tbulls but only if they live a certain distance from schools, people should be able to own pit bulls only if the dog passes an obedience class, etc.

Thinking about all these angles and including them in your speech will make you seem well-informed on the topic, and it'll increase the quality of your speech by looking at difference nuances of the issue.

Know Your Audience

Whenever you give a speech, it's important to consider your audience, and this is especially true for persuasive speeches when you're trying to convince people to believe a certain viewpoint. When writing your speech, think about what your audience likely already knows about the topic, what they probably need explained, and what aspects of the topic they care about most. Also consider what the audience will be most concerned about for a certain topic, and be sure to address those concerns.

For example, if you're giving a speech to a Catholic organization on why you think priests should be allowed to marry, you don't need to go over the history of Catholicism or its core beliefs (which they probably already know), but you should mention any research or prominent opinions that support your view (which they likely don't know about). They may be concerned that priests who marry won't be as committed to God or their congregations, so be sure to address those concerns and why they shouldn't worry about them as much as they may think. Discussing your topic with people (ideally those with viewpoints similar to those of your future audience) before you give your speech is a good way to get a better understanding of how your audience thinks.

Understanding Business Speech Writing

Before we delve deeper into the topic, we must explain the essence of business speech writing.

Speech writers in the business world are responsible for crafting carefully structured scripts that guide speakers' addresses. Although speech writing is commonly associated with political contexts, the demand for this skill extends beyond politics. Various sectors, ranging from business executives to motivational speakers, seek assistance in developing impactful speeches tailored to engage and resonate with their specific audience.

This is one of the reasons why the topic of speech writing is being studied across different institutions of higher learning.

Key Considerations for Business Speech Topic Selection

Now let's take a look at what to consider when selecting a hot business topic for your speech:

●       The intended audience: First, you must consider your target demographic as well as their interests and knowledge level. This ensures that the chosen topic is both meaningful and engaging for them

●       The purpose of the business speech: Ensure you understand what you want from the address. Clarity of purpose is always paramount

●       Relevance: As clichéd as this may sound, ensure that you choose a topic that associates with relevant issues in the business landscape or industry

The Complete, 20-Step Guide to Ace Public Speaking Public speaking is a valuable skill for entrepreneurs as it can help them effectively communicate their ideas, build credibility and trust with potential investors, partners, and customers, and ultimately grow their businesses. Strong public speaking skills can also enhance an entrepreneur's leadership abilities and overall professional development

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

When I was running professional theatrical organizations, public speaking was a huge part of my job. I would be tasked with delivering speeches at various events and to multiple audiences on different topics. Most of the time, I was comfortable giving these talks. I became used to the expectation that I had to deliver information in a clear, articulate way and use my theatrical background to add impact and emotion to my words where necessary.

Now and then, I would get hit with a case of stage fright . Even though I had delivered countless speeches before, something about standing up in front of strangers made me nervous — my palms would start to sweat, and my heart would race.

But when this happened, I always remembered one thing: When it comes to public speaking, it's essential not to be too hard on yourself. Instead of dwelling on potential mistakes or missteps, focus on connecting with your audience and delivering the message you set out to give. After all, if you can relate to them and make an impact through your words, that's what matters most.

While some people are natural-born communicators , others may need to put in a bit more work to hone their skills. If you fall into the latter category, don't worry — with a bit of practice and guidance, you can ace public speaking!

This comprehensive step-by-step guide will show you exactly how to do it. So whether you're starting from scratch or just looking to brush up on your existing skills, read on for everything you need to know about how to ace public speaking.

What is public speaking, and why is it important?

Topping the list of worldwide phobias is public speaking anxiety, also known as Glossophobia, impacting somewhere between 73%-77% of the population .

Public speaking is the ability to intelligently communicate an idea, product or service that resonates with audiences and inspires and motivates them to take action.

It can be an invaluable skill that helps you succeed professionally and personally. Studies show that people who are confident speakers are more likely to get a job, earn higher salaries and have better relationships with their peers. Data suggests that communication skills are becoming increasingly important in today's workplace:

  • According to the US Department of Labor , 75.3% of workers are required to communicate with the general public; this includes making presentations and delivering public speeches.
  • According to a Prezi survey, 70% of Americans who give presentations agree that presentation skills are vital to success.
  • A survey by Gallup found that 60% of respondents believe public speaking is the most essential skill for success in their field.

Being successful is all about connecting with people, and public speaking is one of the central tools you need to make those connections. You can share your vision for your business, network with potential investors or partners and win over your audience with compelling stories — but only if you can speak confidently in front of others. With the right tools and guidance, successful public speaking can become second nature and open up s many possibilities.

While it's natural to be intimidated by stepping onto the stage, with the proper preparation and guidance, you'll have the skills necessary to speak up and stand out!

1. Understand your audience

It's important to know what makes your audience tick. You must be aware of their interests and passions — this will help inform how you speak and allow you to demonstrate a genuine interest in the topic and how it relates to their lives.

Knowing their background, struggles, goals and values allows you to craft messages that captivate your audience, leaving an impactful impression.

2. Define your goal

Knowing precisely what you want to achieve before giving a public speaking engagement can help shape your presentation's overall direction and flow. You'll likely have complex goals , so it pays to take a deeper dive into what you hope to accomplish with your engagement.

Defining your goal upfront — whether touting a new product or inspiring potential investors – will inform other aspects of the speech, such as the content, tone and structure. Ultimately, defining your goal ahead of time allows you to give a practical and concise talk that will leave listeners eager to hear more from you.

3. Research your topic

Whether you're aiming to make a keynote speech or simply presenting your business plan, research is essential to ensure you can convey meaningful information and connection in an engaging way effectively. For public speaking success, it's essential to be well informed on the topic, as it will serve as a foundation for your presentation.

Gathering relevant details enhances your confidence and helps you solidify valuable relationships with your audience. Speakers who take adequate time to research their topic reported higher confidence when delivering their speeches.

As entrepreneurs, we can draw from our own experiences and prepare supplementary resources that can be used as case studies and more.

4. Write an outline (start thinking about visuals)

You'll want to ensure you're speech will be concise, coherent and well-structured . Writing an outline is precisely where you need to start before diving into the script itself. When outlining your talk, break it down into manageable sections so you feel prepared and confident. Spend time researching each point and the supporting materials that will bring your points alive.

Write out a few central talking points for each section. This allows you to refer back to them as needed during the presentation. The outline aims to equip you with enough knowledge so you not only sound conversant on your topic but impress and engage with the audience.

You'll also want to be sure to denote when and where you'll be using visuals within your presentation. According to research , incorporating powerful visuals increases retention rates 6x more than words alone. Moreover, three days following a presentation, 60% of an audience can recall the visuals.

Taking the time to write a comprehensive outline is one of the most ignored elements of successful public speaking for entrepreneurs, but if you break down the process into easily achievable goals, writing the script will be much more powerful, and your anxiety levels will be much lower!

5. Draft a script (open with a relevant story)

Storytelling is a great way to capture your audience's attention. Relevant narratives can help paint a vivid picture of what you are trying to convey, making it easier for everyone to understand.

Consider sprinkling in metaphors, analogies, similes and rhetorical questions within your script. These words will provide a breath of fresh air as they break up the monotony and allow you to express your message in more creative ways that keep it exciting and engaging.

All these literary techniques have proven successful in inspiring audiences and providing them with valuable insights, so take advantage of them!

6. Practice reading the script out loud

As entrepreneurs, it's crucial to be able to use public speaking to advocate for your business goals effectively. A successful and engaging presentation requires practicing with a script beforehand.

A report from the BBC has revealed reading out loud taps into the "production effect," which uncovers any flaws or mispronunciations while improving comprehension. In addition, doing so gives you a chance to get comfortable with the talking points and become proficient in providing powerful and persuasive speeches.

When you practice reading the script, make sure you accentuate key points, pause for emphasis and regulate your breathing to keep a steady pace. This will help project your message more dynamically and give you an air of confidence.

7. Experiment with your voice

As an entrepreneur, one of the essential skills to develop is the ability to confidently and effectively communicate your ideas. With so much riding on you convincing others, investing time in perfecting your public speaking abilities could take you from good to great.

According to Lynn Meade's book Advanced Public Speaking , published by the University of Arkansas, speakers who vary their vocal tones while delivering a speech experience higher engagement from the audience.

Experimenting with your voice will give you the confidence to ensure that your message is not only being heard but being heard clearly and loudly. Having a voice that resonates with authority and clarity sets a positive tone for any presentation and leaves a lasting impression on your audience.

8. Incorporate hand gestures and choreographed hand motions

When it comes to public speaking, hand gestures and choreographed motions are significant for engaging an audience. Adding that "wow" factor to your presentation can help keep your audience tuned in as you present. That's why entrepreneurs must incorporate hand gestures and choreographed hand motions into their presentations!

Hand motions will help emphasize the intended points of each topic and will help contribute to a more professional tone of voice when you're presenting in front of large groups of people. According to research from UCLA, 7% of the message comes from words, 36% comes from voice, and 57% comes from nonverbal communication.

9. Get live feedback from a small group if possible

For entrepreneurs looking to master the art of public speaking, getting live feedback from a small group can be an invaluable learning experience. Not only will this help you build confidence and hone your presentation, but it can also alleviate some of those infamous pre-speech nerves.

According to a glance test carried out by Durate in 2022, you have 3 seconds to capture an audience, so getting live feedback is paramount to your speech's success.

Whether it's an audience of two or 20, having a real-time response to what you're saying helps create a more natural environment for you and your listeners. So don't be afraid to pipe up — ask some friends to listen in and take note of their suggestions for improvement as you speak!

10. Revise the script

After fine-tuning your public speaking script and delivering it, you undoubtedly will receive feedback from the audience on how to improve it. Revising the script based on this feedback is essential in becoming an effective public speaker .

Take the time to analyze what worked and what didn't, then adjust your speech accordingly. It's essential to be willing to reflect and make the changes necessary for a stronger presentation next time.

11. Memorize your speech (but don't be afraid to go off script)

When it comes to public speaking, memorizing the speech can be a great way to ensure you cover all the points you need. However, it is also essential to be open to going off script and allowing yourself some flexibility while delivering. It might feel intimidating at first, but you can take advantage of unexpected opportunities, such as audience reactions.

This can help keep your speech engaging and ensure your message resonates with the audience. Practicing your speech beforehand will help create a solid foundation and boost your confidence while permitting you to explore different paths.

A study from Kennesaw State University reveals that audience attention levels spike after the presenter talks off-script.

12. Practice often — when you think you're ready, practice again

When it comes to public speaking, practice does make perfect. It takes 27 seconds for a speaker to make their first impression, so being certain you're ready versus feeling you're ready makes a significant difference. Rehearsing a speech can lead to higher engagement levels among audiences, boosting retention rates for important information shared in the presentation.

It's important to carve out time in your schedule to rehearse and hone your skills. This includes both physical preparations of materials and vocal exercises. Presentations don't always come naturally, but with enough dedication, you'll find yourself on the road to success. If you think you're ready to give a speech, try giving it once more before you take the stage.

13. Allow for questions and prepare answers

According to ZoHo, 25% of any presentation should be allocated to a Q&A. Different audiences can have different questions about a particular topic, so for every presentation given, it's highly advantageous to anticipate potential questions that your audience may ask and come prepared with nuanced answers.

Take the time to brainstorm the top questions related to the content of your presentation, as well as how best to answer those thoughtfully and effectively. Doing this legwork before you present will ensure that you cover all of your bases and situate yourself as an expert in the field you're presenting on.

14. Field questions with a trusted friend/mentor

Practicing your public speaking beforehand is essential when it comes to presenting like a pro. Running through your speech and responses to possible questions is imperative for ensuring your delivery goes smoothly.

Why not give the presentation to someone you trust? Ask for their honest feedback , constructive criticism and input — the more reps in the practice phase, the better equipped you'll be for those real-life talks!

15. Conduct breathing exercises before your speech

Before getting up to present, take a few moments to breathe. Around 75% of people suffer from speech anxiety just before stepping on stage. Deep breaths can help you stay relaxed and warm you up before speaking in front of a room full of people.

Whether you choose to close your eyes and be mindful or do some yoga exercises, these breathing techniques can be an essential part of preparing for public speaking. When it comes to anxiety-inducing tasks like presenting in front of others, established breathing exercises can make all the difference.

16. Present with confidence, but leave arrogance at home

For success as an entrepreneur, you need to be able to deliver a compelling speech that engages the audience. Presenting your ideas with confidence makes you appear more prepared and can help you make the best out of any speaking situation.

With practice and the right tools, presenting with confidence is easily achievable. Yet, while sounding confident is important, it's equally important to leave arrogance at home - an underrated skill that often comes with practice and a dose of humility.

17. Make eye contact and engage

Engaging your audience while you are speaking is essential to public speaking. A fantastic way to do this is to make direct eye contact with different audience members as you deliver your speech. This will capture their attention, allowing them to become invested in what you have to say.

Of course, it can be intimidating to look out into a group of strangers, but that's where introducing humor, dolling out charisma, and keeping your focus on the task at hand can break the ice necessary to keep nerves low and engagement high.

According to research from Corporate Communications Experts, 3 seconds is the "sweet spot" for eye-to-eye engagement.

18. Keep going if you stumble

Public speaking can be stressful, especially for entrepreneurs. Let's be honest: We all experience a few hiccups occasionally. But don't let them trip you up - keep going! If a mistake or slip-up leaves you flustered, take a breath and move on.

So there's no need to apologize. Compose yourself and continue with your presentation. Don't let a misstep or two slow down the momentum of your speech! Fumbles are normal — but they don't have to derail the passion and enthusiasm of your talk.

19. If you go off script, come back to where you left off

Being an entrepreneur is all about being flexible and resilient, which can also be applied to public speaking! Experts agree that going off script establishes rapport with the audience and encourages them to engage with the presenter on a deeper level.

Of course, it's always great to stick to your script for time efficiency, but if you do happen to stray off the path a bit, don't forget to keep track of the time! The last thing you'd want is to lose track of an idea that could've been potentially a room silencer — so jot down any ideas you may have while still under the microscope. Afterward, return to what you discussed before delving into your new concept. This way, your speech or presentation will stay organized and coherent despite occasional variations.

20. Close big and leave them wanting more

As an entrepreneur, perfecting your public speaking skills can be a huge asset. But how do you make sure to finish off with a bang?

A great way to close big is to end your speech with a memorable line that stays in the minds of your audience long after you've left the room. With the proper use of rhetoric and knowing how and when to employ specific tactics such as referencing metaphors, figures of speech, and even humor, you'll have all the tools you need to deliver powerful closing statements every time!

Public speaking is a skill that is often overlooked, but it is crucial for entrepreneurs. By following the above steps, you will be on your way to becoming a public speaking pro in no time! Just remember to be confident (but not arrogant), engage with your audience, and always leave them wanting more.

10 Tips for Improving Your Public Speaking Skills

Few are immune to the fear of public speaking. Marjorie North offers 10 tips for speakers to calm the nerves and deliverable memorable orations.

Marjorie North

Snakes? Fine. Flying? No problem. Public speaking? Yikes! Just thinking about public speaking — routinely described as one of the greatest (and most common) fears — can make your palms sweat. But there are many ways to tackle this anxiety and learn to deliver a memorable speech.

In part one of this series,  Mastering the Basics of Communication , I shared strategies to improve how you communicate. In part two, How to Communicate More Effectively in the Workplace , I examined how to apply these techniques as you interact with colleagues and supervisors in the workplace. For the third and final part of this series, I’m providing you with public speaking tips that will help reduce your anxiety, dispel myths, and improve your performance.

Here Are My 10 Tips for Public Speaking:

1. nervousness is normal. practice and prepare.

All people feel some physiological reactions like pounding hearts and trembling hands. Do not associate these feelings with the sense that you will perform poorly or make a fool of yourself. Some nerves are good. The adrenaline rush that makes you sweat also makes you more alert and ready to give your best performance.

The best way to overcome anxiety is to prepare, prepare, and prepare some more. Take the time to go over your notes several times. Once you have become comfortable with the material, practice — a lot. Videotape yourself, or get a friend to critique your performance.

Communication Strategies: Presenting with Impact

2. Know Your Audience. Your Speech Is About Them, Not You.

Before you begin to craft your message, consider who the message is intended for. Learn as much about your listeners as you can. This will help you determine your choice of words, level of information, organization pattern, and motivational statement.

3. Organize Your Material in the Most Effective Manner to Attain Your Purpose.

Create the framework for your speech. Write down the topic, general purpose, specific purpose, central idea, and main points. Make sure to grab the audience’s attention in the first 30 seconds.

4. Watch for Feedback and Adapt to It.

Keep the focus on the audience. Gauge their reactions, adjust your message, and stay flexible. Delivering a canned speech will guarantee that you lose the attention of or confuse even the most devoted listeners.

5. Let Your Personality Come Through.

Be yourself, don’t become a talking head — in any type of communication. You will establish better credibility if your personality shines through, and your audience will trust what you have to say if they can see you as a real person.

6. Use Humor, Tell Stories, and Use Effective Language.

Inject a funny anecdote in your presentation, and you will certainly grab your audience’s attention. Audiences generally like a personal touch in a speech. A story can provide that.

7. Don’t Read Unless You Have to. Work from an Outline.

Reading from a script or slide fractures the interpersonal connection. By maintaining eye contact with the audience, you keep the focus on yourself and your message. A brief outline can serve to jog your memory and keep you on task.

8. Use Your Voice and Hands Effectively. Omit Nervous Gestures.

Nonverbal communication carries most of the message. Good delivery does not call attention to itself, but instead conveys the speaker’s ideas clearly and without distraction.

9. Grab Attention at the Beginning, and Close with a Dynamic End.

Do you enjoy hearing a speech start with “Today I’m going to talk to you about X”? Most people don’t. Instead, use a startling statistic, an interesting anecdote, or concise quotation. Conclude your speech with a summary and a strong statement that your audience is sure to remember.

10. Use Audiovisual Aids Wisely.

Too many can break the direct connection to the audience, so use them sparingly. They should enhance or clarify your content, or capture and maintain your audience’s attention.

Practice Does Not Make Perfect

Good communication is never perfect, and nobody expects you to be perfect. However, putting in the requisite time to prepare will help you deliver a better speech. You may not be able to shake your nerves entirely, but you can learn to minimize them.

-200 first-rate impromptu speech topics

By:  Susan Dugdale  | Last modified: 09-26-2023

  • 50 impromptu topics
  • Yet another 50 random speech topics
  • Then 50 more good impromptu speech topics
  • And finally, 50 funny impromptu speech topics.
  • Plus links to more impromptu speech topics and activities.

The topics cover a broad cross section of subject matter. Use them for table topics at your Toastmaster's Club, with your high school public speaking class as practice for debate competitions or, by yourself.

Some of them are quirky and funny.

Many are deliberately provocative to stimulate a response from both you, the speaker and, your audience!

Others are open-ended or neutral to allow whatever occurs in your mind to fit the topic. You could use those ones to tell a true story; a personal experience, share your personal bloopers, or talk about the meaning of life!

Any one of the 200 will make a good subject for an excellent impromptu speech.

These types of speeches, off the cuff and without much time to prepare, are a great way to polish communication skills. And, most importantly, they're fun!

Are you in a hurry & needing impromptu speech topics ready for use now?

Solve your problem in 5 minutes. Get the first list of 50 impromptu speech topics on this page plus 48 more in an instantly available print-and-go pdf. 50 + 48 = 98 impromptu speech topics!

Quick tips for practicing by yourself:

  • Choose a good topic, one that appeals to you from any one of the lists below.
  • Give yourself a strictly monitored preparation time of no more than one minute in which to note an opening, a couple of main points with examples and, a conclusion.
  • Deliver your speech while timing and, if possible, recording it. Aim to speak for a couple of minutes.
  • When you play the recording back, listen for speech structure, (Is there one?), content and fluency. Each of these combine to create the overall impact of your speech.

If you're using these impromptu speaking topics with a friend or in front of an audience in a classroom, use the same method but skip the recording.

Be sure though to allow enough time to give and receive feedback. Along with regular practice, it's a vital part of improving!

Ideally once you or your class has become more confident, you'll allow less preparation time.

The ultimate goal is to be given a speech topic, do some quick thinking and to begin speaking on the subject coherently and easily, almost immediately.

Traffic light on green -start your impromptu speech now!

Literally, you get given the topic, the green light, timer or stop watch is flicked on, you open your mouth and go!

FTC, HHS Seek Public Comment on Generic Drug Shortages and Competition Amongst Powerful Middlemen

Facebook

  • Competition
  • Office of Policy Planning
  • Bureau of Competition
  • general purchasing organizations (GPOs)
  • Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
  • Health Care
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Hospitals and Clinics

Today the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) jointly issued a Request for Information to understand how the practices of two types of pharmaceutical drug middlemen groups—group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and drug wholesalers—may be contributing to generic drug shortages.

In the Request for Information (RFI) , the FTC and HHS are seeking public comment regarding market concentration among large health care GPOs and drug wholesalers, as well as information detailing their contracting practices. The joint RFI seeks to understand how both GPOs and drug wholesalers impact the overall generic pharmaceutical market, including how both entities may influence the pricing and availability of pharmaceutical drugs. The joint RFI is asking these questions to help uncover the root causes and potential solutions to drug shortages.

“For years Americans have faced acute shortages of critical drugs, from chemotherapy to antibiotics, endangering patients,” said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan. “Our inquiry requests information on the factors driving these shortages and scrutinizes the practices of opaque drug middlemen. We look forward to public input as we assess how enforcers and policymakers can best address chronic drug shortages and promote a resilient drug supply chain.”

“When you’re prescribed an important medication by your doctor and you learn the drug is out of stock, your heart sinks,” said Secretary Xavier Becerra. “This devastating reality is the case for too many Americans who need generic drugs for ADHD, cancer, and other conditions. Today’s announcement is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s work to tackle health care monopolies and lessen the impact on vulnerable patients who bear the brunt of this lack of competition. Today’s initiative is just one more action by HHS to best address shortages of generic drugs.”

GPOs serve as intermediaries in the pharmaceutical industry by negotiating deals for generic drugs and other medical supplies between health care providers—including hospitals, physicians, nursing homes, and home health agencies—and manufacturers, distributors, and others who sell to health care providers. Drug wholesalers are another type of intermediary group which purchase drugs directly from manufacturers and deliver them to health care providers.

The joint RFI is the latest effort by the FTC and HHS to promote competition in pharmaceutical markets to ensure that every consumer has access to high-quality, affordable care. As  announced in December 2023, the FTC, HHS and the Department of Justice are partnering on new initiatives which will include a forthcoming joint RFI to seek input on how private-equity and other corporations’ control of health care is impacting Americans.

The joint FTC and HHS RFI released today is requesting public input via comments, documents, and data regarding several topics with respect to generic drug markets and the potential causes of generic drug shortages, including:

  • Whether and to what extent do the available protections for GPOs under the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute affect market concentration and contracting practices by GPOs, as well as drug shortages.

The public will have 60 days to submit comments at Regulations.gov . Once submitted, comments will be posted to Regulations.gov.

The Federal Trade Commission develops policy initiatives on issues that affect competition, consumers, and the U.S. economy. Follow the  FTC on social media , read  consumer alerts  and the  business blog , and  sign up to get the latest FTC news and alerts .

Mayor Harrell Delivers 2024 State of the City Address: Persistent and Pioneering Progress

Mayor Harrell delivers state of the city remarks at the Museum of History and Industry.

Focusing on innovation and collaboration to solve challenges, Mayor Harrell lays out key priorities for 2024

Seattle – Today, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell delivered his 2024 State of the City address outlining his One Seattle vision for the year ahead and detailing actions his administration will take to drive progress on the city’s most pressing challenges to create a safe, equitable, and thriving future.

Mayor Harrell delivered his remarks at the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) located in the South Lake Union neighborhood of downtown to recognize Seattle’s history as a hub for innovation and how that spirit will define the future of the city. A summary year-end report detailing the Harrell administration’s work in 2023 is available here:  Making Progress Building One Seattle: 2023 Year in Review .

READ REMARKS AS PREPARED: State of the City 2024: Persistent and Pioneering Progress

WATCH: Mayor Harrell Delivers 2024 State of the City Address

“In my first State of the City two years ago, I stressed a back-to-basics approach, defining a dedication to delivering the core municipal government responsibilities that residents expect and demand,” said Mayor Bruce Harrell. “Just because something is a basic, there is still room for improvement and innovation. From our timber town roots to the tech boom, Seattle’s history tells us that it’s innovation and new ideas that break through logjams and cultivate hope. With our One Seattle model that’s focused on innovation and collaboration, we will continue to solve our greatest challenges and move Seattle into the future together.”

Key highlights from Mayor Harrell’s remarks include:

Expand emergency response options : Launched in 2023, the CARE department is staffed with behavioral health professionals. Mayor Harrell will seek to increase the capacity of the department to help more people in their moment of need and ensure highest priority incidents receive critical police and fire services.

Hire more police officers: Mayor Harrell and SPD continue to recruit officers and comprehensively review and improve application processes that haven’t been updated in decades, leading to the highest number of applicants in several years.

Advance public safety and public health solutions to the fentanyl crisis: Building on Mayor Harrell’s $7 million investment in capital improvements for treatment facilities to address the fentanyl and synthetic opioid crisis, the location and provider of a post-overdose recovery center will be announced next month to help more people access lifesaving treatment services following non-fatal overdoses. This builds on public safety efforts like arresting dealers and implementation of a public drug use ordinance, along with public safety innovations establishing Health 99 post-overdose response team, an expanded mobile medication delivery for opioid use disorders, and a new contingency management drug abatement program.

Build community-driven safety solutions : To ensure public safety solutions are built with the input of the communities most impacted by crime and violence, Mayor Harrell and City leaders will host a public safety forum in the spring to hear resident’s feedback and ideas on making Seattle a safer place.

Homelessness action : The Unified Care Team will continue helping those in need and ensuring sidewalks and public spaces are open, safe, and welcoming to all. Since the mayor took office, shelter referrals have increased by 83%, over one thousand people have come indoors, and tents on sidewalks and in parks have been reduced by half from over 1,000. There’s been a 41% decrease in gun violence incidents related to homelessness and 16% decrease in fires at encampments or lived-in RVs

Building needed housing: Mayor Harrell will release details of the One Seattle Comprehensive Plan in the next two weeks, advancing a housing strategy that allows new kinds of housing across the city, brings missing middle housing to every neighborhood, and expands density with a focus on areas with strong transit access.

More affordable housing, more quickly: 1,400 units of affordable housing opened last year and another 7,600 are in the pipeline, along with at least 3,100 more affordable homes funded through the Housing Levy passed by the voters in 2023. Following efforts to streamline design review and increase production of affordable housing to address the housing crisis, Mayor Harrell will be proposing new permitting improvements and incentives based on insights from housing experts.

Safe, reliable, and equitable transportation system : Mayor Harrell will share plans in the coming week that will form the foundation of the transportation levy renewal package to meet current safety and maintenance needs of Seattle roads, bridges, sidewalks, and transit infrastructure for years to come.

Downtown revitalization: Mayor Harrell’s Downtown Activation Plan has made progress to revitalize the city’s center with 83% of initiatives in progress in less than one year. To support downtown economic recovery, the Seattle Restored program puts small businesses and artists in formerly vacant storefronts, and recently received a $200,000 investment from JPMorgan Chase to help some of the 30 existing locations turn into long-term leases.

Fund more electric heat pump conversations : Following the passage of the Building Emissions Performance Standard (BEPS) which will reduce emissions from large buildings, Mayor Harrell will accelerate Clean Heat Program efforts to decarbonize more residential homes across the city.

Improve affordability programs: Building on Mayor Harrell’s Executive Order to make City discount and savings programs more accessible, an additional 15 City programs will be added to the Affordable Seattle online portal this year offering up to $63,000 in savings for neighbors and families.

Addressing the City’s budget forecast : Working with a wide array of partners, the City will continue to advance a thorough review of its budget, revise practices, and double down on the programs, projects, and policies that are most effective for the people of Seattle with a data-driven approach guided by the One Seattle Data Strategy .

Giving back to our community : The third annual Day of Service will occur on May 18, 2024, bringing thousands of volunteers together to roll up their sleeves and take action to improve the city we love.

Trump blasts judges, elevates Michigan in speech ahead of presidential primary

public speaking topics on business

Former President Donald Trump delivered a combative campaign speech Saturday night at an Oakland County airport hangar, beginning by chiding a judge who fined him some $450 million for financial fraud a day before and blasting his critics and a judicial system he claimed is corrupt and set up against him for political reasons.

"It's a horrible, horrible thing that is taking place," Trump said as his speech got underway shortly after 7 p.m. "You're talking about democracy. This is a terrible threat to democracy taking place."

In a speech that lasted more than an hour and saw Trump bring an autoworker on stage with him, the former president listed a series of grievances against President Joe Biden and the current administration, blaming him for open borders and crime — even though violent crime was down across the U.S. last year — and saying only he can secure the borders, enforce trade deals and stop a move to force automakers to sell more electric vehicles.

Delivering the speech 10 days before Michigan's Feb. 27 Republican primary, Trump was under no illusions about how significant the state will be if, as expected, he wins the nomination to face Biden in the fall, saying, "If we win Michigan, we win the election."

He could well be right.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Wearing a red "Make America Great Again" hat, Trump began the speech by launching into a sweeping defense of his business practices and his contention that Democrats are out to get him and keep him from being elected president again. "These are Democrats that definitely hate me — they hate you, too," he said to a crowd of about 2,000 supporters gathered in a hangar in Waterford northwest of Detroit.

Trump's visit to a state he won in 2016 before losing decisively to Biden in 2020 comes at a legally fraught time for the former president. A day earlier, New York Justice Arthur Engoron hit Trump with a fine that tops $450 million with interest and barred him from doing business in the state for three years for illegally inflating financial reports. Earlier in the week, another New York judge ruled that a criminal trial of Trump — related to hush money payments paid to an adult film actress ahead of his 2016 election — can move forward in March.

Trump is expected to appeal the Friday finding though he will likely have to put up a sizable financial bond to do so but his financial exposure has become vast, especially since just three weeks ago he was fined a $83.3 million judgment in a civil defamation case stemming from his public denial of writer E. Jean Carroll's sexual assault allegations against him after a civil jury had found in her favor.

He has continued to denounce those cases as well as others, including one in Georgia related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, another involving the same issue before a federal judge in Washington D.C., and a third in Florida related to allegations he improperly kept confidential documents after leaving office, as meritless and politically motivated.

During Saturday's speech he circled back to his legal challenges several times to defend himself and blast what he argued is an unfair legal system manipulated by Democrats.

He also called Engoron "crooked" and "a lunatic," saying, "Hopefully, the whole thing is going to be thrown out and reversed."

Trump's supporters have largely agreed with his arguments about the cases against him: He has only solidified his hold on the Republican Party despite the legal challenges he has faced and his efforts to reverse the 2020 loss to Biden even though he has shown no evidence of the widespread fraud he alleged. He is widely expected to win Michigan's Feb. 27 Republican primary and a follow-up GOP caucus-like convention the following weekend; his only opposition at this point is his former ambassador to the United Nations and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

"My poll numbers are much higher today ... because of this," Trump said in reference to the many criminal and civil court actions he faces.

But the legal questions could hurt him with independent voters and if he becomes president again, he will have no authority to pardon himself for any non-federal issue, such as the cases in New York.

Trump made his way to Michigan as an eager crowd stood outside in sub-freezing temperatures hoping to get in to see him; earlier in the day, he made what was considered an unusual detour for a campaigning former president, pushing $399 gold Trump-branded sneakers at the "Sneaker Con" gathering in Philadelphia. The Associated Press reported he was met there with boos .

But in Waterford, he was greeted with a standing ovation and cheers as he argued that the switch to selling electric vehicles or EVs will result in fewer auto jobs, a contention which is true, though there are efforts underway to transfer lost jobs into related manufacturing. Meanwhile, his claims that autoworkers are all "going to be out of work in two years" as Chinese manufacturers take over the EV market is wild speculation: While China dominates much of the supply chain for materials for EV batteries, billions have been invested in the U.S. to open new factories and create new supply chains for domestic production, in large part because of incentives created by the Biden administration.

Trump noted the huge number of undocumented migrants crossing the Southern border, saying the border was far more secure when he was president and arguing that it has resulted in an explosion of crime. He invoked an image of "illegal alien criminals crawling through your windows and going through your drawers."

He said since he left office — following an election he again baselessly claimed was fraudulent — the nation has become "stupid" again, a situation he said he would reverse if reelected.

"We will be the stupid country no longer," he said. "We had it going, we built the greatest economy in the history of our country but we will get it back and we will do it again."

Trump did oversee a strong economy, especially in terms of stock market gains, but it soured late in his term due to shutdowns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden has overseen large gains in the stock market and job market as well, with unemployment rates persistently low — but inflation soared following the pandemic and its increases have only been coming down significantly in recent months.

Waterford Regional Fire Department Chief Matt Covey told the Free Press he was prepared to allow 2,000 people into the hangar for the Trump event and he believes nearly that number were admitted.

Before the speech, U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Bruce Township, said she expected to hear Trump tell the crowd "how we're going to get our country back on track."

Trump's speech also came at a time when there are warring factions within the state Republican Party, with the Republican National Committee (RNC) last week determining that former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, who was Trump's ambassador to the Netherlands, was the official state party chairman after an election last month, even though Kristina Karamo, who was elected in 2023, continues to claim that election and her ouster was invalid.

McClain said now that the RNC has endorsed Hoekstra "it's time for us to come together," adding: "We need to understand who our enemy is." But even though Trump referred to Hoekstra several times during the speech, Karamo's allies say she is still chair and claimed Saturday a group of state committee members reelected her in a meeting that day.

A court is expected to ultimately rule on the question but there is potential for confusion with the Republican presidential primary set for Feb. 27 and the state GOP set to have a convention to award nominating delegates to the candidates two days later on March 2. The competing chairs have said they each plan separate convention locations.

On Friday, Michigan Democrats held an online news conference to blast Trump and warn that a Trump victory in November would be bad news for Michigan and its workers, as well as the country. U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Ann Arbor, noted that many in the party dismissed her concerns when she warned of a potential Trump victory in 2016.

“This time, I’m really scared to death what’s going to happen in this country,” Dingell said. Trump “doesn’t care about our auto industry; he doesn’t care about working people," she said.

Ahead of Trump's rally, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer — a co-chair of Biden's reelection campaign — put out a statement arguing that as president Trump stood against workers, fought to overturn abortion access and allowed jobs to be moved overseas. "Donald Trump creates division everywhere he goes, but we’ve come together to make our state more welcoming and more prosperous," she said. "Michigan didn’t buy what Donald Trump was selling in 2020 and we won’t in 2024."

But Trump did win Michigan in 2016, although it was by a slim margin of less than 11,000 votes or about two-tenths of a percentage point. And there are many indications that he could win the state again this year, with voters widely disapproving of Biden's performance as president and polls showing him trailing Trump in several battleground states, including Michigan.

A Fox News poll this week showed Trump 2 percentage points ahead of Biden in Michigan, 47%-45%, in a head-to-head matchup, though that was within the poll's margin of error. Trump's lead was bigger, at 42%-37%, when including independent candidates Robert Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West and Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

Complicating matters for Biden in Michigan is his support for Israel in its counterattack of Hamas in the Gaza Strip following terrorist attacks of last Oct. 7. With tens of thousands of Palestinians killed in the counterattacks, many progressives — as well as many members of southeastern Michigan's large Arab American and Muslim community — have demanded Biden call for a cease-fire, given the financial support the U.S. provides Israel.

Biden, who made his first campaign visit of the year early this month, does have support in the state, however, including from the UAW, which endorsed his candidacy in January and held events on his behalf in Warren. UAW President Shawn Fain, fresh off a successful strike of the Detroit Three automakers — during which Biden became the first sitting president to walk a picket line — has vociferously denounced Trump as a "scab" and a member of the "billionaire class."

Trump, meanwhile, has blasted back at Fain, calling him a "dope" and a "weapon of mass destruction" and arguing that by allowing the automakers to pursue a transition to selling more electric vehicles and not speaking out against the Biden administration's proposed rule to spur those sales, the UAW brass could cost autoworkers their jobs.

At the same time, the Biden campaign hasn't stayed pat as Trump tries to boost his base in Michigan ahead of a Feb. 27 primary he is widely expected to win. On Friday, it unveiled a 1-minute TV commercial, airing in Michigan and some other battleground states, criticizing Trump for comments in which he said he told a leader of a country that is part of NATO, the North American Treaty Organization, that if it didn't pay its share of the group's costs, he would encourage Russia to take any action it liked .

"No president has ever said anything like it," the ad says. "It's shameful."

How a Well-Executed Social Initiative Strengthens Your Brand

public speaking topics on business

Programs designed to address social issues can lead to growth, customer loyalty, and employee engagement.

In the modern competitive business environment, innovative social initiatives offer a unique avenue for growth, customer loyalty, and employee engagement, often overlooked by organizations. Traditional social efforts like standard volunteering and environmental goals lack impact due to their inability to establish a unique and emotionally engaging identity. The effectiveness of social programs hinges on their alignment with a company’s identity and their ability to resonate with societal challenges, create a strong brand identity, generate excitement, and be scalable. Exemplary cases from Barclays, Dove, Hellmann’s, and Thrivent demonstrate the transformative impact of well-executed social initiatives. These programs not only revitalized brand images and increased public trust, but also significantly boosted sales and customer engagement. Implementing these signature programs requires a committed leadership, a supportive culture, and a passionate team, highlighting an underused strategy for business growth and brand strengthening.

In today’s competitive business landscape, organizations are increasingly seeking innovative strategies to spur growth, build customer loyalty, and enhance employee motivation. One often overlooked approach lies in the realm of social initiatives.
