The Old Propaganda Poster Shop, Hanoi

Amongst the tourist trinkets of Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a small shop doing a brisk trade in selling off old propaganda posters from the Vietnam War, providing both history and art as souvenirs for backpackers.

Hanoi has hundreds of shops selling silks, lacquerware, tailor made clothes and all sorts of other handicrafts, but my favourite is this shop on Hang Bac in the city’s Old Quarter that sells hundreds of original propaganda posters and reprints from the American War, as it’s known in Vietnam. Step into the shop and you step into a time capsule of exhortations to patriotism and defeating the enemy, all under the watching eye of Uncle Ho.

propaganda posters hanoi

There’s a initial kitsch value to browsing amongst the posters which are stacked 50 deep separated by cover sheets, but flicking through a deeper, more sobering picture emerges of the Vietnamese struggle for survival and independence. The old lady who runs the shop might well have lived through both the French and American wars in Vietnam. I wonder what she thinks of all these backpackers crowding into her shop to buy these posters that once would have been taken deadly seriously.

There are a variety of artistic styles at work, from the blocky Soviet graphical influence to almost impressionistic efforts. Many of these images are genuinely striking irrespective of their historical impact and as they only cost a few dollars each, you can buy several. Unsurprisingly, images of Ho Chi Minh, credited as the Father of the Nation who led Vietnam through the war but did not leave to see its independence, crop up frequently. My favourite picture of Uncle Ho, as he’s affectionately and respectfully known to the Vietnamese, is this portrait of him made entirely with Vietnamese stamps.

We decorated our apartment with some of our favourite Vietnam propaganda posters – a simple frame makes them quite striking. Apologies for my crap flash-in-the-way photo:

There are literally hundreds of posters in the Old Propaganda Poster Shop – it would make for a great book and also a great historical document to find some of the artists who are still living to talk about how they came to create these images and the influences on their work. Hmm, now there’s an idea…

Where To Buy Communist Propaganda in Hanoi, Vietnam

Socialist Propaganda

You may not agree with the message behind it, but you cannot deny the visual aesthetic of Vietnamese communist propaganda art . While they are still used today to spread educational messages and promote love, to most, they are works of art. Here are places in Hanoi where you can buy some communist kitsch to decorate your shelves and walls at home.

Generally, most markets and souvenir shops have some sort of propaganda art — be it little trinkets such as keychains and coasters, or something a little bit bigger like Uncle Ho coffee mugs and Chairman Mao alarm clocks. Just a quick stroll down the Old Quarter or a visit to Dong Xuan Market and you are bound to come across a few items here and there.

Old Quarter, Hanoi

If you want some proper posters to fill up your walls that give subtle messages to anyone who visits your home, then you can drop by one of the few stores specialising in communist propaganda posters mentioned below. Most work being sold are fantastic reproductions of the originals. If you wish to get your hands on original pieces, you can, but these are rare and undoubtedly come at hefty prices.

1. Old Propaganda Posters

2. Thang Long Gallery

Thang Long Gallery also houses a really good selection of old propaganda posters. Here you can get your hands on originals, but expect to pay prices in the four-figure range – US Dollars of course, not Vietnamese Dong. For reprints, prices range from USD$3.00-10.00, based on the size of the print – the largest being around a standard 24” x 36” poster size. Buy them in bulk and you may get a discount. You will get them rolled up in cardboard tubes for safe and easy transport back home. For an idea of what they have in stock, check out their Facebook page in advance.

The Hanoi Gallery

If you haven’t had enough of browsing through communist propaganda posters, stop by The Hanoi Gallery as well. The owners of this shop speak great English and will happily tell any curious soul the stories, meanings and messages behind each artwork. If posters are out of your budget, there are small card-sized reproductions available. A small poster of a Vietcong soldier sells for around USD$5.00, while a larger portrait of former US president Richard Nixon as a Godzilla -like monster will be around USD$20.00. 36 Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem, Ha Noi, Vietnam , +84 439347192

Hanoi can easily be a shopping mecca for souvenir-seekers, but the country’s capital offers so much more for both art lovers and accidental tourists.

A typical walk around Hanoi would lead travelers to Hoan Kiem Lake to take in the sights and catch a glimpse of its centenary “great grandfather” turtle. If you’re lucky, locals say, you might see it when it lifts its head above the water, perhaps as a hint of showmanship. (Some locals are not aware that the legendary creature passed away in January 2016). The soles of your feet could also bring you to the nearby red Huc bridge, which runs through the center of the famous moss-green lake.

The way there is a convoluted, lovely mess whether you’re coming from the Old French quarters or the Silk Road of Hang Gai. For the average pedestrian, Hanoi’s streets—from Ly Quoc Su to Hang Be—are decidedly a maze of sort. Every turn is a welcome surprise. There’s always a souvenir seller, a silk merchant, or a bun cha eatery, as well as a shrine, a t-shirt maker, and the occasional counterfeit goods seller. (Just don’t get hit by mo-peds while crossing the street.)

Propaganda Poster Shop in Hanoi

#AD: Follow others’ footsteps and make most of your stay in Vietnam. Learn more about how to travel and teach English in Vietnam here.

A few blocks away, one can find an Old Propaganda Posters shop along Ly Quoc Su, across famed coconut pastries shop, Joma Bakery Cafe. As far as Vietnamese stores go, the shop is comparable to a stall, but don’t let its size fool you. The shop hosts piles of art prints, from replicas of OBEY founder and street artist Shepard Fairey’s Make Art Not War , to the “real deal” propaganda prints of 1940s and 1970s. Its walls are also adorned with motivational posters of another kind: one on ousting American forces, and another on hero worshiping Uncle Ho—Ho Chi Minh, to the rest of the world.

Viet Army Stops Snake 1953 Poster

Propaganda posters are representative of Vietnam’s patriotic past, present and future; they line the streets during national events, or for no special reason at all. They call to mind pop art and kitsch, utilizing bold reds, blue and yellows, as well as unequivocal symbols such as the hammer and sickle, which signify the long-standing Communist ties betwe en Russia and Vietnam.

In one poster, a red, closed fist with a gold star splits a U.S. B-52 in half, which, perhaps embodying the intense patriotism and animosity Vietnam had for the U.S. during the war. (One local, a former television presenter, once remarked to this writer that the French and Americans “came and we drove them out.”) Others portray the Vietnamese way of life, such as a woman dressed in traditional clothing and transferring milled rice to a sack, or children holding hands in a circle.

Today’s propaganda posters are stylistically updated, but traces of earlier traditions are noticeable. Regardless, they serve the same purpose: to remind locals of their duty to the homeland, and uphold good values passed on from generations to generations.  “People looked to propaganda posters for a sense of direction,” historian and National Assembly deputy Duong Trung Quoc, told Channel News Asia once. The medium is not without challenges, however. Quoc criticized the decline of the art form , describing new output as “boring and repetitive” due to “lack of investment in logical thinking,” according to the news website.

Devastation Caused By Communism 1951

Oil paintings are also on sale for meandering tourists keen on exploring the city on foot. The pricier ones find home in the galleries, while those made by local artisans and the every man are displayed on the streets. Paintings of everyday objects, animals (yes, including cats) and scenes of traditional life in Vietnam are often portrayed in the paintings that cost anywhere between $30 and $200. Tourists are free to haggle to their heart’s content; but as in anywhere in the world, being considerate of local wages and living conditions are encouraged. The average national salary in the country is also somewhere around $150 and Vietnam art requires resources, as well.

Authenticity seemed to be an issue for some tourists in Hanoi, especially when it comes to prints, although presumably, most tourists wouldn’t mind. Some buyers on the web pointed out that the prints they bought were fake, after being made to believe that they were buying authentic reprints. Some favor one store over the other; the Hanoi Gallery along Hang Bac being a favorite among tourists. While some are understandably concerned about the quality of the prints or paintings they bought, one thing’s for sure: the medium of expression is a testament that art is a powerful way to change minds and launch an inquiry into current values, in an era of fake news and sensationalism.

Propaganda Posters

This 13 part series covers the history of Vietnam from France's colonial control, through the 1945 revolution, to the 1975 U.S. evacuation from Saigon and the years beyond. The series' objective approach permits viewers to form their own conclusions about the war. 101--Roots of a War--Despite cordial relations between American intelligence officers and Communist leader Ho Chi Minh in the turbulent closing months of World War II, French and British hostility to the Vietnamese revolution laid the groundwork for a new war. 102--The First Vietnam War (1946-1954)--The French generals expected to defeat Ho's rag-tag Vietminh guerrillas easily, but after eight years of fighting and $2.5 billion in U.S. aid, the French lost a crucial battle at Dienbienphu--and with it, their Asian empire. 103--America's Mandarin (1954-1963)--To stop the spread of communism in Southeast Asia, America replaced France in South Vietnam--supporting autocratic President Ngo Dinyh Diem until his own generals turned against him in a coup that brought political chaos to Saigon. 104--LBJ Goes to War (1964-1965)--With Ho Chi Minh determined to reunite Vietnam, Lyndon Baines Johnson determined to prevent it, and South Vietnam on the verge of collapse, the stage was set for massive escalation of the undeclared Vietnam War. 105--America Takes Charge (1965-1967)--In two years, the Johnson Administration's troop build-up dispatched 1.5 million Americans to Vietnam to fight a war they found baffling, tedious, exciting, deadly and unforgettable. 106--America's Enemy (1954-1967)--The Vietnam War as seen from different perspectives: by Vietcong guerrillas and sympathizers; by North Vietnamese leaders; by rank and file; and by American held prisoner in Hanoi. 107--Tet (1968)--The massive enemy offensive at the Lunar New Year decimated the Vietcong and failed to topple the Saigon government, but led to the beginning of America's military withdrawal. 108--Vietnamizing the War (1968-1973)--President Nixon's program of troop pull-outs, stepped-up bombing and huge arms shipments to Saigon changed the war, and left GI's wondering which of them would be the last to die in Vietnam. 109--Cambodia and Laos--Despite technical neutrality, both of Vietnam's smaller neighbors were drawn into the war, suffered massive bombing, and in the case of Cambodia, endured a post-war holocaust of nightmare proportions. 110--Peace is at Hand (1968-1973)--While American and Vietnamese continued to clash in battle, diplomats in Paris argued about making peace, after more than four years reaching an accord that proved to be a preface to further bloodshed. 111--Homefront USA--Americans at home divide over a distant war, clashing in the streets as demonstrations lead to bloodshed, bitterness and increasing doubts about the outcome. 112--The End of the Tunnel (1973-1975)--Through troubled years of controversy and violence, U.S. casualties mounted, victory remained elusive and American opinion moved from general approval to general dissatisfaction with the Vietnam war. 113--Legacies--Vietnam is in the Soviet orbit, poorer than ever, at war on two fronts; America's legacy includes more than one half million Asian refugees, one half million Vietnam veterans and some questions that won't go away. Vietnamese Propaganda Art, All You Need To Know

Written By:

Post Date – Updated:

As you travel around Vietnam, you will see these large posters on the intersections and street corners which depict some kind of theme about life in Vietnam. These posters are known as a propaganda art posters.

Propaganda posters first started in the Soviet Union and then spread to other socialist countries like Vietnam. For many years, posters have been an essential part of the Vietnamese art scene. You can still see the propaganda art posters around Vietnam.

Table of Contents

The start of the propaganda posters, propaganda art during the vietnam war years (1955-1975), propaganda art in vietnam today, themes of vietnamese proganada artwork explained, where to purchase vietnamese propaganda art, what are the vietnamese bamboo instruments, who built the long bien bridge.

Propaganda Posters Hanoi, Vietnam

In the former Soviet Union, the Marxist-Leninist ideology used propaganda art posters. These posters first appeared in the early 1990s. ,

The propaganda art posters were used to depict and show the Red Army’s many triumphs in the Soviet Union. The designs and colors were chosen to be bold with simple designs so that even the illiterate could understand the meaning of the posters.

Vladimir Lenin, the  Russian revolutionary, politician, and political theorist said this about using art:

“The art of any propagandist and agitator consists in his ability to find the best means of influencing any given audience by presenting a definite truth, in such a way as to make it most convincing, most easy to digest, most graphic, and most strongly impressive.” Vladimir Lenin

Propaganda Posters in Vietnam

Many believe that propaganda art posters started in Vietnam during the Vietnam War (1955-1975). But propaganda posters were known to exist in the 1940s when the French still ruled Vietnam. The propaganda art posters would have been used by Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Cong to promote their cause and not by the French Government.

Ho Chi Minh or Uncle Ho as he is lovingly called by the Vietnamese, understood the power of art in educating and telling a story. After the French left Vietnam in 1954, the dominant art style of Vietnam was propaganda art that followed the Leninist approach to art. The Leninists thought believed that:

“..art is not art unless it is propaganda.” Leninist thought

Ho Chi Minh and the famous Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap understood the power of art to communicate their ideas. They used art and in particular, propaganda art posters to convey their message to the Vietnamese people. This is how the very simple, yet brightly colored art became such an essential part of Vietnamese culture and life.

As the war in Vietnam raged for twenty years between 1955 to 1975, the propaganda posters became an essential nationwide rallying call to arms. The posters helped boost a sense of nationalism and Vietnamese pride.

Many propaganda artists would trek through the dense Vietnamese jungles with their comrades-in-arms, essentially hardened front-line soldiers. These same artists were not soldiers but students or volunteers, yet they lived under the constant threat of American bombers, being captured or killed. This was not an ideal environment for any artist.

Yet despite this hardship, the propaganda artists continued to produce a huge amount of important propaganda artwork. For these artists, it was a way to defy the enemy and show their nationalist pride and determination. That is why in their art during this time frame is a sense of optimism, peace, and hope for their country.

Today as you travel to Vietnam, you will see propaganda art all over Vietnam. The propaganda art is on large-size posters on major intersections, street corners, or traffic circles. In some of the Vietnamese countryside areas, you may see huge billboard-size propaganda posters.

I have lived and worked in Vietnam for many years. I have to admit until I decided to write this blog about propaganda art posters, I passed by these posters frequently but did not pay much attention to them. They are very much a part of Vietnamese culture and life, so if they disappeared, I would miss seeing them.

About Vietnamese Propaganda Art

Vietnamese propaganda art is as varied as the artists that produced it. In the war years, many students and volunteers were involved in the production of the art. Because of this, the art in this period is as varied as the artists who produced it.

Here is some general information about Vietnamese propaganda art:

  • School of Fine Arts, Hanoi – Many propaganda artists attended the School of Fine Arts in Hanoi. This is still one best art schools in Vietnam.
  • Artists – In the early years of propaganda art, many different kinds of artists, students, and volunteers were involved in producing propaganda posters. Today propaganda posters are produced by propaganda artists that work for the Vietnamese government. This is why today, the style of propaganda art is quite similar and uniform.
  • Vietnamese Style – During the war years, The School of Fine Arts selected some students to go to the Soviet Union to study the Russian propaganda art style. In some of the art pieces in this era you can see the influence of Russian propaganda art, but most of the Vietnamese propaganda art has a decidedly Vietnamese style.
  • Bright and Colorful – The artwork of Vietnamese propaganda art uses bright and bold colors. Even today, you see a lot of art using the colors of the Vietnamese flag, with red and yellow being the predominant colors of choice for the artists.
  • Empathy Through Realism – One of the main objectives of Vietnamese propaganda art is to help the viewers to have empathy through realism. You can see this in the propaganda art today as you see ordinary people next to Ho Chi Minh with everyday objects like fish, books, flowers, or vases. Other everyday people, as a workers with hard hats, show the importance of everyday laborers to Vietnamese life.
  • Artistic Style – The artistic style of the propaganda posters is simple and has an art graphic feel. Bold colors cover large spaces of the artwork. Specific symbols will be used, such as the lotus flower, a star, the Vietnamese flag, or the Communist sickle.

There are a few common themes that run through Vietnamese propaganda artwork. The common themes are:

  • Ho Chi Minh – One of the major themes of the propaganda artwork in Ho Chi Minh. Ho Chi Minh is highly revered and considered the founder of the Republic of Vietnam.
  • Women – The role of women is significant in Vietnamese society. So many of the posters will emphasize the role and importance of women. Many women were heavily involved in the war effort, so during the war era, the artists acknowledged the importance of women through posters.
  • Children – You will see many posters that may have Ho Chi Minh surrounded or holding children. The children can symbolize many things, but among them is the future of Vietnam.
  • Workers – Many posters will show all kinds of workers in Vietnam doing various jobs. Workers from the military to construction workers. This can symbolize the importance of everyone in Vietnamese society working together for the nation’s good.

Hanoi, Vietnam, is renowned for its excellent selection of Vietnamese propaganda art. However, the COVID pandemic and the subsequent decline in tourism led to the closure of many such shops.

For those interested, you can visit the Vietnam Old Propaganda Posters store, located at 43A Hàng Bè, Hanoi, Vietnam, to explore their collection. You can find out more on their facebook page by clicking here.

Additional information

The North–South Railway (Vietnamese: Đường sắt Bắc–Nam , French: Chemin de fer Nord-Sud ) is the principal railway line serving the country of Vietnam. It is a single-track metre gauge line connecting the capital Hanoi in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south, for a total length of 1,726 km. Trains travelling this line are sometimes referred to as the Reunification Express (referring to the Reunification of Vietnam), although no particular train carries this name officially. The line was established during French colonial rule, and was completed over a period of nearly forty years, from 1899 to 1936. As of 2005, there were 278 stations on the Vietnamese railway network, of which 191 were located along the North–South line.

From World War II through to the Vietnam War, the entire North–South Railway sustained major damage from bombings and sabotage. Owing to this damage, and to a subsequent lack of capital investment and maintenance, much of the infrastructure along the North–South Railway remains outdated or in poor condition; in turn, lack of infrastructure development has been found to be a root cause for railway accidents along the line, including collisions at level crossings and derailments. Recent rehabilitation projects, supported by official development assistance, have improved the safety and efficiency of the line. As of 2007, 85% of the network’s passenger volume and 60% of its cargo volume was transported along the line. The national railway company Vietnam Railways owns and operates the line.
