100+ Free Alphabet Printables for Preschoolers

May 9, 2022 by Samantha Wonders

Letter recognition is just one piece of a comprehensive literacy program in preschool . But it’s an important piece! Here are 100 free alphabet printables that will help your preschooler learn letter recognition, letter formation, beginning sounds and more! In this list you will find fun activities that are perfect for preschool centers and teaching preschoolers the alphabet. Some alphabet activities include uppercase letters and lowercase letter matching. There are also alphabet worksheets such as coloring pages, letter tracing and alphabet order printables.

100+ free alphabet printables for preschoolers

Alphabet letters don’t come naturally to all children. Some recognize letters with only a few times being exposed to them, while other children need repeated exposure. I think because of this we are always looking for new and improved teaching techniques for teaching preschoolers the alphabet.

FAQ About Teaching the Alphabet to Preschoolers

Preschoolers need a lot of exposure to the alphabet. They need  explicit instruction  as well as plenty of indirect alphabet instruction. That’s where letter knowledge builds through playful and natural activities in day to day life. To start teaching your preschooler the alphabet, try these things: ~ Read lots and lots of picture books! ~ Point out print around you. ~ Teach your child the  letters of his name . ~ Teach each letter explicitly. ~ Do lots of whole alphabet activities, too. ~ Do  hands-on alphabet activities . ~ Sing letter songs .

The alphabet should not be taught in alphabetical order. Teaching the alphabet in order puts a big focus on those beginning letters. Those are probably going to be the ones that your child sees and remembers most, since that Alphabet Song is so catchy! Instead, teach the letters in order of  how frequently they appear easily decodable words . Letters like s, t, r, m, n, a, o, and p should be taught first. These are “high-frequency” letters and emphasis on these letters first will allow children to quickly start reading simple words.

Many preschool alphabet activities that are done in the classroom can also be done at home. Beginning sound activities like these  Beginning Sound Picture Seek Mats  are a good option, as well as these  Beginning Sound Fill-in Cards  and these  Year Long Alphabet Find and Circle Worksheets .

Spot the Letter alphabet mats make learning letters hands-on and fun!

My kids really enjoy these Spot the Letter Mats. Children will search the mat for objects that start with the letter in the middle of the mat. Slip in dry-erase sleeves and mark objects with dry-erase marker. Or laminate and mark with pom poms, craft gems or other small objects.

Beginning sounds clip card wheels. A fun printable alphabet activity.

These Beginning Sounds Clip Wheels develop fine motor skills while teaching the children to identify beginning letter sounds. Each wheel includes 4 objects that correspond to the letter in the middle. Children will mark the correct pictures with clothespins.

Kids love these beginning sounds alphabet mazes.

This Beginning Sounds Mazes are a fun way to learn letter sounds! These bright and colorful mazes are visually engaging and great for developing visual tracking skills which are also necessary for reading.

These alphabet mini books are interactive and engaging.

These Alphabet Mini Books were a labor of love for me. They were quite time-consuming to make, but my kids love making mini books! They are different from my usual printable because they are in black and white, but I love that they are interactive and my kids enjoy coloring in all of the pictures.

I have included two whole pages for each letter . Use only the first page for younger children and then add in the second page for older or more advanced learners.

Even if you aren’t sure your kids will enjoy them, I encourage you to give them a shot. My son is a very reluctant reader and writer, but if you put something in a mini book format that he can color and put together himself, he is much more engaged and willing to participate in the activity. He loves these books!

Keep reading for a free PDF printable including 3 FREE ABC Charts that we know you’ll love!

What is an Alphabet Chart?

Alphabet charts are also known as ABC charts or alphabet posters and include every letter of the alphabet from A to Z.

Often, each letter has a picture that provides visual stimulation and represents the letter sound.

This can be an extremely useful tool to help children identify individual letters and beginning sounds, which is part of learning to read.

In the free PDF, I included both uppercase and lowercase letters and a picture that starts with the corresponding letter.

Check out this post : Work on fine motor skills, alphabet format and beginning sounds with the Counting Cube Alphabet Mats .

How to Use Your Alphabet Chart

There are many ways to use an ABC letter chart. It is highly beneficial during early learning. Here are ways to use your chart to gain maximum benefit:

1. Introduce one letter at a time

Children learn best through repetition. It might be best for kindergarten students or preschoolers to learn one alphabet letter a week .

Let the kids point and identify the letter on the alphabet poster; say the name, the picture or keyword, and the letter sound.

Example: “A- apple- aa”. I highly suggest you begin by modeling the above, especially for children who are learning the alphabet for the first time.

2. Play letter games

Children learn better when they are relaxed. Try playing an interactive game while teaching the kids. After identifying the letter on the chart, they could give the names of more objects that start with that letter.

You can also ask them to guess the name of an animal that begins with that letter. This helps to reinforce their learning. Try out this fun game of Alphabet Sound Bingo for an interactive learning experience.

3. Add it to a sensory bin

If you have a toddler, you can introduce the alphabet to them by adding letters to a sensory bin. It is such a hands-on way to help children learn the alphabet.

Prepare the activity by printing the chart on cardstock for increased durability. You can also choose to laminate it.

Cut out each letter block and hide it in a sensory bin afterward. I usually start by adding one letter per week. I also add pictures of items that begin with that letter.

Once kids find the images, you can help them to say the name of the image, the letter it begins with, and the letter sound.

Remember first to model the activity. Eventually, your kids will pick it up unprompted.

Another way to create a sensory bin is to print one chart, cut out the letter blocks, and have the kids find them and match each letter block to the second chart. Here are more ideas on how to teach the alphabet .

Benefits of an Alphabet Chart

Numerous research studies have found that learning the alphabet is the ultimate key to learning how to read , spell one’s name, and unlock many other cognitive and developmental milestones.

Here are some benefits of ABC charts that expand on the importance of learning the alphabet :

  • Improves letter recognition
  • Develops phonemic awareness
  • Expands vocabulary
  • Language development
  • Enhances communication and literacy skills

Teachers can use these charts as a phonics resource or as a way to make their student’s environment more engaging. Parents can use these for a homeschool curriculum or to reinforce alphabet learning in a fun way.

Free Printable Alphabet Chart

There are 3 free charts that you can use in the PDF. Print out as many copies as you would like! I recommend printing a large ABC chart for kids and displaying it in your classroom or home.

Layout of two colorful alphabet charts and a free tracing page

As the kids learn all the letters, they can always refer back to their chart and see how much they have learned!

1. ABC Chart with Clipart

A colorful alphabet chart with uppercase and lower case letters and doodled illustrations

The first free printable ABC chart included in the free PDF contains uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and adorable clipart images, which might be more appealing to younger children!

2. ABC Chart with Real Images

Alphabet chart with uppercase and lowercase letters and realistic images

This chart also has uppercase and lowercase letters, but you’ll notice something unique. Realistic images are added to help create a real-life association with each letter and contribute to their long-term memory.

3. ABC Letter Tracing Chart

Alphabet tracing page of uppercase and lowercase letters with arrow directives

Finally, I added an ABC letter tracing chart with arrow directives to guide the kids’ writing skills and letter formation. It’s also a wonderful way to teach them how to follow instructions. Let the kids trace the letters and ask them to name something that starts with that letter.

You can also ask the kids to draw something that begins with each letter. Sometimes, I draw a picture on the board and ask the kids to trace the beginning letter of that object.

50 Simple & Fun Alphabet Activities for Preschoolers

Literacy & ABCs Popular Preschoolers ABCs Letter Sounds Letters Lowercase Letters Resources 92 Comments

It’s almost time for back to school for preschool and kindergarten kids and these alphabet activities will come in handy!

How do you teach the alphabet to preschoolers?!

As a preschooler, I don’t really think a lot is expected for them to know. Some basics are good though, like colors , shapes ,  numbers and letters.

To refresh my preschooler’s memory of letter recognition in general, as well as knowing the uppercase and lowercase alphabet and getting to know some of the letters sounds, I’ve been collecting ideas for activities that Henry can do to get him back on track of school. (Check some more out my ABC Learning & More Pinterest Board .)

Not to mention it’ll be great to get me back into school mode too!

50 Alphabet activities for preschoolers to learn letter sounds, upper and lowercase letters and recognizing their letters -- all without worksheets.

With any learning activities, it’s very important to not crush your child’s confidence . Build on what they already know and expand slowly. And only go further when they’re excited to learn.

We want our kids to love learning! Not dread it.

So if they’re not excited about an activity, put it away until another day.

The big question then is…

How do you teach alphabets to preschoolers in a fun way?

Here are 50 alphabet activities meant for preschoolers that do just that.

Hands-on activities that have the preschoolers playing and involving their entire body while learning their ABCs.

Without them even realizing that they’re learning to recognize the letters of the alphabet, both the upper and lower case… or their letter sounds.

Let’s get on with it and see how to teach the alphabet to preschoolers in a fun way!

I’d love to know.

When was your child able to identify some letters of the alphabet?

Henry learned his alphabet really early it seemed. Identifying a few letters when he was 20 months old and knowing almost the entire alphabet when he was just over 2 years old.

George on the other hand has no interest yet at 22 months so it’s not on our radar.

If you have an eager early learner, these beginning learning letter activities are perfect for toddlers!

This is a good idea, it can raise children’s enthusiasm for learning. Because children’s development is faster when something they like is there.

He learned the letters by us reading the Dr. Seuss “A, B, C” book to him every night and learned the sounds by a kids’ laptop my parents bought him. My younger son is now 21 months old and I’m getting ready to start working with him, but he does not enjoy reading like my older son does so I have a feeling it is going to be a different ballgame! Thank you for some great ideas!

Love, love, love this collection! My older son also learned his alphabet as well as sounds very early. He had the alphabet down by about 22 months, mastered what sound each letter made by about 24 months.
