• Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan F

Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan F is an insurance policy intended to cover the out-of-pocket health care costs of Original Medicare Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. Although Original Medicare Part A and Part B cover hospital costs, skilled nursing home care, doctor’s office visits, and routine medical services and health care for many people in the United States, these plans do have deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments that beneficiaries need to pay out of pocket. Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan F pays for these out-of-pocket medical expenses incurred while receiving Medicare benefits.

What Does Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan F Cover?

Generally speaking, Mutual of Omaha Medigap Plan F pays for all of the Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles, coinsurance costs, and copayments. It covers:

  • All of the Part A hospitalization deductibles for up to 425 days of hospitalization
  • All of the Medicare Part A deductible for skilled nursing facility care up to 100 days
  • All of the Medicare Part A coinsurance and copayments for hospice care
  • All of the costs of the first 3 pints of blood per year
  • All of the yearly Medicare Part B deductible
  • All of the 20% Medicare Part B coinsurance costs for doctor’s office visits and routine medical care
  • All of the Medicare Part B excess charges
  • 80% of costs incurred for emergency medical health care required during a foreign travel emergency, up to $50,000

It should be noted that Medicare Supplement insurance policies only provide health insurance coverage for Medicare benefits available under Part A and Part B of the federal Medicare program, which means they do not cover prescription drugs. This is the case whether you choose United of Omaha/Mutual of Omaha insurance company or another health and life insurance provider.  It is also the case whether you choose Plans A through Plan C, Plan N, Medicare Supplement Plan G, Plan F or any other plan.

Does Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan F have a network?

Unlike most Medicare Advantage plans, Medigap plans have no network or limitations on which doctors, clinics, or hospitals the beneficiary can use. Any health service provider that accepts Medicare can provide services that will be reimbursed by Mutual of Omaha under the Plan F benefits. This means that beneficiaries can consult experts and go to the top-rated best health clinics and receive their full benefits from Medicare Supplement plans.

Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan F Rates

The average Medigap Plan F premium varies from $159 to $236 but it can be considerably lower or higher depending on individual beneficiary factors.

Medigap plan rates vary by individual. Factors that influence the Medicare Supplement Plan F rates include the current residential address, the sex and general physical health of the beneficiary at the time of enrollment, and the age of the beneficiary. The effect of the age of the beneficiary on the Medigap Plan F rates varies depending on what method the insurance company uses to calculate their Medicare Supplement Plan F rates.

There are three basic methods, attained-age, issue-age, or community rated. Attained age policies adjust your premium on the basis of your current age, and thus the premium tends to go up over time. Issue-age policies base your premium on your age at the time you first enroll in the policy, and thus your premium will be lower if you buy your Medigap Plan F policy at age 65 versus buying it at age 75. Community rated plans just charge everyone in the same geographical location the same premium regardless of their age; since Plan F is generally perceived as the best Medigap plan, it is extremely popular and thus insurance companies can reduce their premiums and maintain a fairly stable premium overtime for this insurance policy by spreading the costs over large numbers of beneficiaries who can then enjoy the benefits of Mutual of Omaha Plan F.

Thus, taking the above factors into consideration, the average Medigap Plan F premium varies from $159 to $236 but it can be considerably lower or higher depending on individual beneficiary factors. Beneficiaries should compare the plans offered by various insurance companies before enrolling in the best-rated one that provides the benefits they need at a cost they can afford.

Mutual of Omaha High Deductible Medicare Supplement Plan F

An alternative to Medigap Plan F is a high-deductible Plan F. It has all of the benefits and coverage provided by a regular Plan F, but none of the benefits are paid out until $2,490 of expenses are met each year, aka beneficiaries have to pay a yearly $2,490 deductible in addition to their Part B and Plan F premiums. This plan may be the most economical option for a senior who is generally healthy since a High Deductible Supplement Plan F premium is considerably lower than a regular Plan F premium. However, if something unexpected happens, such as hospitalization, the beneficiary will have to pay the deductible. It is important for seniors to carefully compare the benefits and also compare the potential costs of a high deductible plan to a regular plan.

Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plan F Reviews

Mutual of Omaha is generally rated as one of the best Medigap Plan F insurance companies by A.M. Best and others, offering the best Medicare Supplement Plan F. This insurance agency has a large number of customers enrolled in Plan F, and thus it can maintain low and stable premiums and provide full benefits. The company itself is very financially stable and provides excellent customer service, and it offers household discounts and other perks.

However, before buying a Medigap policy, seniors should carefully compare all of their options and compare the benefits they need with the costs they can afford. It is a good idea to consult an insurance agent with expertise in Medicare policies who can assist in performing these comparisons. There are many options to compare and consider, such as whether to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan or to enroll in Original Medicare Part A and Part B.

After enrolling in Original Medicare, is it best to buy a Medigap policy, and if so, which of the many Medicare Supplement plans? Also, since Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B do not cover drug insurance costs, it may be best to enroll in Medicare Part D as well. These various plan options and their potential benefits and costs should be subjected to a careful comparison before the beneficiary makes a decision.

Although there is a good chance that Mutual of Omaha will be the best option for you — whether you’re shopping for Plan A, Plan N, Plan F or any other plan — you can also look for lower premiums from other companies like United World Life. We can help you with looking for affordable options so that you can enjoy the things that Plan F covers without paying an overly high premium and without having to worry about expensive rate increases. Find the right Medicare Supplement Insurance plan

Because Medigap plans are standardized, you can get precisely the same Medicare benefits from any company offering the plan. So when you shop, keep these considerations in mind to find the best policy to fit your needs:

Is your preferred plan available? Health insurance companies don’t always sell every plan, so check who sells the plan you want to buy in your area.

What are the premiums? Prices for the same plan can vary between companies, so check to find the most competitive rates.

Will your premiums change over time? Most policies cost more as you age, but some companies offer policies that let you lock in a price when you sign up.

Are there extras? Medigap plans’ core benefits are standardized, but in certain cases, some companies include such perks as discount programs or gym memberships.

Best Medicare Supplement Plan F Providers

Learn how to choose the best extra coverage options for Medicare

Original Medicare offers quality coverage, but it leaves a lot of out-of-pocket costs on the table. On average, Medicare beneficiaries paid $5,801 out of pocket on healthcare expenses in 2017, and one out of 10 people spent more than $10,200. This is where Medicare Supplement Plan F and other Medigap plans can be beneficial. These plans pay down the expenses left behind by Part A and Part B , including deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket expenses.

With the exception of Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, the federal government standardizes what is included in each lettered Medicare Supplement Plan (Plans A through N). Medicare Supplement Plan F is not only the most comprehensive plan for lowering out-of-pocket costs, it is also the most popular. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), nearly 14 million people on Original Medicare were also on a Medigap plan in 2018, and more than half of them were on Plan F.

Although Medicare has an annual Open Enrollment Period, there is only one Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This six-month period starts when you enroll in Medicare Part B. Signing up after that time will allow companies to increase your rates or deny you coverage based on preexisting conditions.

As one of the first carriers to service Medicare in 1966, it has also built a solid reputation for high-quality Medicare products in all states where traditional Medicare Supplement Plans are available.

If you are looking for High-Deductible Plan F, this company offers it in most states except for Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wyoming.

How to Shop and Compare the Best Medicare Supplement Plan F

Step 1: choose original medicare or a medicare advantage plan.

Decide what kind of Medicare best suits your needs, Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) or Medicare Advantage (Part C) . You can do this when you sign up for Medicare or during the Medicare Open Enrollment period (October 15–December 7). You are not eligible for a Medicare Supplement plan when you enroll in Medicare Advantage.

Step 2: Find Out If You Are Eligible for Medicare Supplement Plan F

These plans are not offered to new Medicare beneficiaries in 2020. If you were eligible for Medicare based on a qualifying disability or your 65th birthday was before January 1, 2020, you may be eligible for Plan F.

Step 3: Decide Between a Regular Plan F and High-Deductible Plan F

Choose the plan that makes the most sense for you financially. Regular Plan F will offer higher monthly premiums but will begin to pay toward out-of-pocket costs right away. High-Deductible Plan F, on the other hand, offers lower monthly premiums but requires you to pay an annual deductible, set at $2,490 for 2022, before it will pay toward out-of-pocket costs.

Step 4: Find an Available Medicare Supplement Plan F in Your State

Medicare makes this easy by its Medigap Find a Plan database. Enter your ZIP code for a list of available plans in your area and select View Policies on the right of the screen for a list of companies offering Plan F or High-Deductible Plan F. To narrow the pricing window, there is an option to enter age, gender, and tobacco use on the Main Search page.

Step 5: Get Help From a Medicare Specialist

Medigap plans are nuanced when it comes to pricing. For example, not everyone understands that there is only one Medigap Enrollment Period in your lifetime, not an annual one like other Medicare plans. Signing up late can cause your rates to go up based on preexisting conditions . Your state health insurance assistance program or state insurance department can help you with issues like this. You can also ask your broker for details.

Step 6: Sign Up for Medicare Supplement Plan F

You may receive marketing mail about Medicare Supplement Plans, especially during Medicare Open Enrollment. The Medigap Find a Plan site on Medicare.gov also gives phone numbers and direct website links for each Medigap plan in your state. Reach out to the insurance company of your choice for a quote. In fact, considering reaching out to multiple companies to get the best rate. There is no option to sign up through the Medicare site directly.

Am I Still Eligible for Medicare Supplement Plan F?

Congress passed the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) in 2015. One part of the law aimed to reduce access to Medicare Supplement Plans that covered the Part B deductible. Those plans, Plan C and Plan F, are no longer available to new beneficiaries, but you can still sign up for them if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.

What Is the Difference Between Medicare Supplement Plans F and G?

Medicare Supplement Plans F and G are very similar. The one difference is that Plan G does not cover the Part B deductible. Otherwise, they each pay toward the following:

  • 80% of foreign travel expenses (up to plan limits)
  • 100% of blood products (the first 3 pints)
  • 100% of Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to 365 days
  • 100% of Part A deductible
  • 100% of Part A hospice care coinsurance/copayments
  • 100% of Part B coinsurance/copayments
  • 100% of Part B excess charge
  • 100% of skilled nursing facility coinsurance

Does Medicare Plan F Cover My Prescriptions?

Before Medicare Part D took effect in 2006, certain Medicare Supplement Plans (Plans H, I, and J) offered prescription drug coverage. However, after January 1, 2006, companies were no longer allowed to sell these plans to new beneficiaries. People who had been on them previously were allowed to keep their plans as long as they did not sign up for Part D coverage.

That does not mean that people cannot get prescription drug coverage with the Medigap plans available today. Medicare Supplement Plan F (and all plans that cover Part B coinsurance/copayments) pays toward prescription medications that are covered under Medicare Part B . Any medications under Medicare Part D, however, will not be covered.

How Much Should I Expect to Pay for Medicare Plan F?

The following summary reviews Plan F costs across four regions of the United States. Based on cost summaries from Medicare’s Medigap Find a Plan database, Part F ranges from $97 to $990 per month.

  • East Coast (Albany, New York): $242–$414
  • Midwest (Lansing, Michigan): $115–$946
  • South (Austin, Texas): $97–$903
  • West Coast (Sacramento, California): $144–$990

Keep in mind this is only a sampling of data. Costs could be higher or lower where you live, depending on your age, gender, and when you first sign up for Medigap.

Every Supplement Plan F covers the same items, but not every plan is equal. You also need to consider a company's reputation, pricing structure, website friendliness, and other perks. To find the top Medicare Supplement carriers, we reviewed all companies in the Medigap Find a Plan database that offered Plan F and High-Deductible Plan F. Only those that serviced 40 or more states were considered.

Each company was ranked based on its website's quality and ease of use, price transparency, whether prices were based on age, and the types of plan available (regular vs. high-deductible). We also highlighted any discounts or perks offered by these companies. For pricing comparisons, we called each company to request a quote for a healthy, non-smoking 66-year-old male living in Lansing, Michigan.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048) 24 hours a day/7 days a week to get information on all of your options.

mutual of omaha plan g reviews

Medicare Plan G remains one of the top Medigap plans in the country. We have many clients that are extremely satisfied with their supplemental plan from Mutual of Omaha. Plan G provides 100% coverage for all the “gaps” left over by Original Medicare (except for the Part B deductible). The Medicare Part B coinsurance is covered in full.

As with all companies, rates will go up over time. Mutual is no exception to this rule.

Plan N is the 3rd most popular Medigap plan and is offered by MOO. N is similar to G as it has the $240 annual deductible. Also, N has an office copay up to $20, $50 E.R. copay (waived if admitted), and Part B excess charges are not covered. (Excess charges can be easily avoided if you make sure the doctor is set up with “Medicare assignment”).

Read more: Part B Excess Charges

Plan N can be a great option for someone who doesn’t mind the office copays and wants to enjoy a lower premium than G or N.

Mutual Of Omaha will continue to offer Medigap plans in 2023. Plan F will no longer be offered to people who are turning 65 after January 1st, 2020. Folks who currently have a Plan F can keep it indefinitely, or they can change to a Plan G or N for a reduced premium.

Those people who were eligible for Medicare prior to Jan. 1st 2020 can still purchase a Plan F.

There are many factors that affect the price of your policy such as age, location, and gender. Here are some sample rates for a female age 65, non-tobacco in Dallas, Texas:

Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Review: F, G and N Plans

Published on December 26, 2023

Written By: Mark Prip

Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company offers Medicare Supplement insurance in most states. Popular Medigap policies include Plans F, G, N, and high-deductible plans. Company reviews are positive overall, but some customers complain about rate increases.

  • Key Features of Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plans
  • Reduces out-of-pocket costs to make health care more affordable
  • Eliminates or minimizes deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments
  • Coverage is offered in most states (however, not all ten standardized Medigap plans are offered in every state)
  • Vision discounts (EyeMed)
  • Hearing discounts (Amplifon)
  • Discounts for wellness (Mutually Well)

Mutual of Omaha Pros & Cons

Pros: positive reviews.

BBB gave Mutual of Omaha an A+ rating .

An overall customer 4.5-star rating , with high marks in confidence and satisfaction.

Cons: Rate Increase History

The Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement plan uses an attained-age approach to determine rates; therefore, policyholders can expect an annual premium increase. While this method is common, Marketwatch.com remarked on customer complaints about higher-than-average rate increases.

Note: premiums vary by location; some states do not allow attained-age pricing .

Superior Ratings

Forbes ranked the Mutual of Omaha Group in the Top 5 Medicare Supplement Companies for 2024.

AM Best confirmed their financial strength and long-term issue credit as superior .

This speaks well of Mutual of Omaha Group’s creditworthiness, stability, strong operating performance, and leading market position in Medicare Supplement products.

  • Coverage and Plan Benefit Features

Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company cites Plans F, G, and N as their most popular Medigap supplemental health care insurance plans. These plans offer considerably more benefits than the most basic Medigap policy (Plan A).

Medicare Plan F

Medicare Supplement Plan F was the most popular plan for new Medicare recipients until January 1, 2020, when federal legislation ended Plan F and Plan C for newly eligible beneficiaries. However, if you were eligible for Medicare coverage before the phase-out date, you could still purchase one of these plans if available in your state.

Plan F coverage includes:

  • Complete coverage of approved hospital costs up to 365 days after you exhaust your Medicare Part A benefits through Original Medicare (including coinsurance)
  • Medicare Part B copays and Part B coinsurance (includes doctor visits)
  • First three pints of blood (not covered by Original Medicare)
  • Medicare Part A hospice copays and coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A deductible and Part B deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • Foreign travel emergency care (80% of covered out-of-pocket costs up to the plan limit)

Medicare Plan G

If you want the benefits provided in Plan F but are not eligible, Medicare Supplement Plan G may be your health insurance solution. With Plan G, you will pay the Part B deductible out-of-pocket, but you will generally get a lower premium than with Plan F. With an expected out-of-pocket cost of $240 per year (2024 Part B deductible), you may choose Plan G even if you are eligible for Plan F.

Difference between Plan F and Plan G:

Part B deductible coverage (Plan F covers the deductible; Plan G does not)

Medicare Plan N

Plan N covers the same benefits as Plan G with these exceptions:

  • Part B excess charges are not covered.
  • Doctor visits requiring copays will cost $20 per visit.
  • Emergency room visits not leading to inpatient admission require a $50 copay per visit.

Cost of a Mutual of Omaha Medigap Plan

The cost of a Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement plan is influenced by the following:

  • state regulations
  • the type of Medigap plan you buy
  • your location, specific to your zip code
  • eligibility for a household discount (allowable in select states)

Enrollment outside the Medigap Open Enrollment Period also plays a significant role in determining the cost of your Medigap plan. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a six-month period that begins on the first day of the month during which you are both 65 years of age and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. If you miss the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which ends six months after the above conditions are met, you will likely be subject to higher premiums based on your health conditions .

  • To prepare for enrollment in a Mutual of Omaha Medigap plan, discussing your healthcare needs and preferences with a licensed insurance agent  may be helpful.
  • Ensure your Medicare ID card is handy, as you will need proof of Medicare Part B coverage.
  • If you are signing up after the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, be prepared to discuss health conditions that may impact pricing. Your agent can then walk you through the application process.

Note: Depending on where you live, you may purchase your Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement insurance through an affiliate of the Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company, such as Omaha Supplemental Insurance Company or Omaha Insurance Company.

Mutual of Omaha does not offer SilverSneakers, but the insurer does have a health and fitness program named Mutually Well. When you register for Mutually Well, you gain access to discounts on wellness products, nutrition information, and gym memberships.

Until 2020, the insurance company offered Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) but does not any longer. If you are a Medicare Advantage (MA) member, you must first drop your MA plan and return to Original Medicare if you want to obtain Medicare Supplement insurance. Using Medicare Supplement insurance plans to cover MA out-of-pocket costs is prohibited, so having both plans is neither an option nor a benefit.

Medicare Supplement insurance does not include Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage, but beneficiaries can purchase Part D coverage from Mutual of Omaha. Part D is a separate insurance policy requiring a monthly premium and deductible, and some drug purchases may require coinsurance payments or copays.

It’s a good idea to check the plan’s formulary (an approved drug list) to confirm the medications that you need are included. Review the list before you enroll, and look for formulary updates annually.

United of Omaha Medicare Supplement Review

Pros and Cons :

United of Omaha is a subsidiary of Mutual of Omaha that garners a strong financial rating and competitive plans in certain states. Very strong in Pennslyvania where they offer a high-deductible Plan G.

You might be coming to this article because you own this subsidiary and you had a substantial rate increase. states like colorado, florida, maine, and maryland might want to start exploring other options for plans in their respective states if they experienced a rate increase. they do not offer a free gym membership but do offer a discounted gym membership in certain states..

United of Omaha is a subsidiary of Mutual of Omaha. They have an A.M. Best and S&P Rating of A+ (Superior). With fantastic customer support, a high rating, and competitive rates, we believe that they are a strong carrier, but their rate increases for Plan F and G leave a lot to be desired.

Is United of Omaha, a legitimate company? Believe it or not, we’ve heard this.

Don’t feel bad if you’ve wondered about yourself. Within the world of financial products, it is good to be cautious and ask questions. There are so many companies competing among Medicare Supplements. It can be very hard to navigate all the companies and options to find the perfect Omaha insurance company that suits your needs.

Strong herd of Mutual of Omaha. They are a recognized brand among Medicare supplement products. They are famous for their sponsorship of Wild Kingdom. But United of Omaha, who are they? You can trust them. United of Omaha is one of many subsidiaries  Mutual of Omaha  owns. This is common among big insurance companies. They will often create subsidiaries for different regions to create a new group of Medicare recipients, like a fresh new group of Medicare recipients, to lower the risk of the overall group in an effort to offer lower rates to those that qualify.

Company Info

United of Omaha is a long-standing and well-established subsidiary of Mutual of Omaha, based in Omaha, Nebraska. Mutual of Omaha was founded in 1909 to sell health insurance. The company was founded by a medical student and his wife. They became concerned over health costs for many of the patients they saw. This prompted them to develop health insurance products to help with hospital costs.

Over time the company has expanded into a wide variety of life and health products as well as annuities. When the federal government launched the creation of Medicare in 1965, Mutual of Omaha began selling Medicare supplement products. They were an early leader among Medicare Supplement companies and have always been at the forefront of innovation.

Mutual of Omaha  launched United of Omaha in 1926. Originally the company was designed to specialize in and sell life insurance to children. First, it was known as United Benefit Life Insurance Company. The name was eventually changed to United of Omaha in 1981.

United of Omaha has expanded the number of products they sell. Today, United of Omaha is known primarily for its Medicare Supplement insurance plans. They also sell life insurance, fixed self-funded pension plans, and other insurance plans. They are known for competitive premiums, high-quality products, outstanding customer service, strong financial ratings, and fast underwriting. When you apply for Medicare Supplement products with United of Omaha, your application is approved in an average of 4 days.

Because United of Omaha is controlled and operated by Mutual of Omaha; its financial strength reflects the parent company. Every financial rating organization gives Mutual of Omaha high marks as of 2022. Financial strength is an important component in deciding on a Medicare Supplement company. Strong companies pay claims quickly and have the ability to invest in customer support systems.

The top 3 financial rating services, A.M. Best, Standard & Poor’s, and Moody’s Investors Service, rate United of Omaha as follows:

  • A.M. Best: Superior (A+)
  • Standard & Poor’s: Strong (A+)
  • Moody’s: Good (A1)

Consumer Ratings

The  NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners)  collects information on every operating insurance company in the United States. One excellent indicator of company strength is the Complaint Ratio. The Ratio is based on how many customer complaints are generated per company.

The ratio is built on a scale from 0 to 2. Where 2 is the worst possible score. A company in this range has more complaints than its competitors. If a company scores a 1, they experience the average number of complaints among its insurance peers. Anything below one would be excellent. In 2018, United of Omaha scored an excellent .48. This is the ratio for all their products. Out of all complaints, only one complaint was for their Medical Supplement product. This is an outstanding review and speaks volumes about their customer service.

United of Omaha Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement plans are designed to cover medical expenses that traditional Medicare does not cover. Once you enroll in Medicare Part A & B, you can purchase a supplement plan.

When Medicare becomes an option for you, we recommend you begin investigating the supplement market. Each person has a window of time where they can apply for Medicare supplement products. During this open enrollment period, you are automatically accepted without special health underwriting. This window is three months prior to your 65th birthday through three months after.

Medicare Supplement policies are designed to bridge the gap between Medicare and traditional health insurance. Because of the function of these products, they are often referred to as Medigap policies.

Medicare Supplement policies protect you from unexpected medical costs that Medicare will not cover. For example, Medicare Part A covers up to 60 days of hospitalization. But you have to pay a substantial deductible of $1,632 as of 2024. If you are in the hospital for 150 days, you will run out of coverage completely under traditional Medicare.

Under Part B (doctor visits), you are responsible for a $240 deductible as well. Then Part B will only pay for 80% of approved services. You will have to pay for the 20% remaining costs. Part B includes doctor visits, ER visits, blood tests, x-rays, etc. It can get even worse. There is no cap on the 20% payout like you may have had under traditional health insurance policies.

This is where Medicare supplement policies help. They pick up those costs that you would normally incur if you only have traditional Medicare.

Wheelchair

United of Omaha offers the following Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans:

  • Medicare Supplement Plan A
  • Medicare Supplement Plan B
  • Medicare Supplement Plan C
  • Medicare Supplement Plan D
  • Medicare Supplement  Plan F*
  • Medicare Supplement Plan G
  • Medicare Supplement Plan M
  • Medicare Supplement Plan N

The government ruled back in 2015 to stop offering Plan F by Jan 1, 2020, to those born after Jan 1, 1955. However, if you are currently enrolled in Plan F, you will be grandfathered as long as you keep the plan. You can also still get the plan if you were born prior to Jan 1, 1955.

If you are currently enrolled in a plan, you are able to switch plans or companies at any time throughout the year.

Medicare Supplement Chart 2024

The most popular among Mutual of Omaha medicare supplement policies are Plan F, G, and N. Plan F is unique because the government has approved a high deductible option. The benefits of a high deductible plan are a significant reduction in the customer’s premium. However, you should weigh the amount of premium saved against the potential deductible. Unless you are saving more or equal to the deductible amount, this may not be the best choice for you.

Plan F  will be retired for new customers at the end of 2019. Current Plan F participants will be grandfathered and can continue with the plan as outlined above.

Plan G  is the most similar to F. The only difference is the Part B deductible amount. Currently, many people will choose G over F because the Part B deductible is small. The premium saved is usually more than the deductible.  Also, the high deductible option switched to the High Deductible Plan G in 2020 as well.  There are small changes in how the deductible is applied between the plans. You can find the full explanation in our High Deductible Plan G article.

What distinguishes Medicare Supplement from Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage under one plan by combining Medicare Parts A and B. It doesn’t support a premium for prescription drugs like Part D. However, Part D premium starts at as low as $5, so it doesn’t make a significant difference. These also go by the name Medicare Advantage Part C plans.

Insurance plans for Medicare Supplement, often known as Medigap, assist in covering the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not cover (Part A and B). Although it offers coverage in conjunction with Medicare, it does not replace Medicare as your primary insurance.

United of Omaha Medicare Supplement Prices

For all Medicare Supplement plans, pricing will vary depending on the state where you live and the company you choose.

Here is an example of rates from the state of Virginia, which is a good average pricing example in the United States.

The below rates are from ZIP code 80024 in Dupont, CO, for females age 65. Rates vary based on ZIP code, gender, age and, in some areas, health. A 12% household discount is not factored in here but could be if eligible.

  • Plan A: $141.37
  • Plan F: $231.43
  • Plan G: $184.26
  • Plan N: $115.65

This is only an illustration, and the prices are subject to have changed since the time article was last revised.

It is important to keep in mind that all Medicare supplement insurance plans are federally standardized. This means they must cover the same exact benefits, making shopping around a critical step in the decision process for Medicare supplements. Because of this, be sure to check out the  other important factors that should be driving your Medicare supplement decision.

The government regulates the content and coverage of each plan. Regardless of which company you choose, the coverage will be the same. The company you choose does matter. Premiums will differ per company, so it pays to shop. Also, make sure you choose a financially strong company with the ability to pay claims and provide an excellent customer experience. How Age Affects the Pricing of United of Omaha Supplement Insurance Plans?

In some selected states where age affects the pricing of supplement plans, With fewer price rises than other providers, United of Omaha has some of the most affordable plans on the market.

Owners of Medigap policies from the United of Omaha frequently express dissatisfaction over escalating costs. But in jurisdictions, were factoring in the age factor to determine costs is permitted, the Medigap policyholders are seen frowning at the somewhat elevated prices. However, this problem affects all Medigap providers and isn’t exclusive to the United of Omaha.

Prices for United of Omaha Medigap typically rise by 2% to 3% for every year of age. These little increments build up, and people in their 85s may end up paying twice as much as those in their 65s. Rate adjustments might vary, and individuals who have additional risk factors may experience greater rises.

Although age-based pricing increases are inevitable in many states, the rate at which they occur will determine your overall lifetime expenses. We advise getting quotes for various ages so you can evaluate how your prices could alter.

How to get a better deal from the United of Omaha?

Household discounts.

Discounts for households range from 7% to 12%, according to the business. Those who live with a spouse, domestic partner, or other seniors over 60 are eligible for the savings. Even if other members of your family don’t have Mutual of Omaha insurance, you can still receive the discount. Household discounts are state-specific and will vary for each area.

Plan G with a High Deductible:

These affordable plans, which can cost as low as $40 per month roughly for a 65-year-old female, are not offered by many providers.

Plans include coverage for Medicare Part B excess charges and foreign travel expenses for emergencies, and they offer the same great coverage as a normal Part G plan. However, you won’t be covered by the high-deductible plan until your out-of-pocket medical costs surpass $2,800. Medicare will stay pay its percentage as your primary insurance during the deductible stage, just not the Medicare supplement plan.

The people who need this kind of coverage the most are those who wish to guard against high costs in the event of a serious illness but are content to rely solely on Original Medicare for years when they want routine care.

United of Omaha Medigap Plan Benefits

  • Fast Underwriting.  Most policies will be approved in 4 days or less.

Mutual of Omaha Medigap Plans Review

Mutual of omaha.

F or those of us who are 65 years and older, going on Medicare can be a sigh of relief. As we step away from work-related insurance coverage, Medicare steps in to take over. But Medicare only pays for 80 percent of your coverage. That’s where Medigap providers like Mutual of Omaha come in, offering supplemental insurance to cover the gap between what Medicare does and doesn’t pay.

Mutual of Omaha has been administering Medicare since its inception. Today, it’s considered one of the top Medigap providers, covering nearly 10 percent of Medicare beneficiaries. It offers plans in all states (except Massachusetts) and is especially popular for speedy claims payments. But there are some cons, like higher premiums and limited plan options. To help you decide, we’ve broken down the company’s most important plan benefits, downsides, prices, and how to navigate buying a policy.

The Pros and Cons of Mutual of Omaha

Pros about mutual of omaha.

  • Fast claims fulfillment
  • Guaranteed renewal
  • Up to a 12 percent household discount
  • A+ credit and Better Business Bureau ratings for customer satisfaction
  • Customizable; they also sell Part D prescription plans and vision and dental
  • Available in most states

Cons About Mutual of Omaha

  • Above-average premiums
  • Limited plan options
  • Frequent premium hikes

Overview of Mutual of Omaha’s Medigap Plans

* As of Jan. 1, 2020, Plan F and the High Deductible Plan F are only available to applicants who became eligible for Medicare prior to 2020.

Which Mutual of Omaha Medigap Plan Is Right for Me?

Because the company offers fewer plans than other companies we’ve reviewed, like Aetna , it might be a bit easier to choose a plan. However, if you’re looking for more variety, you may want to consider other popular providers, like Humana , Aetna, or Blue Cross Blue Shield . We’ve outlined our recommendations for Mutual of Omaha’s various Medigap plans so you can find the one that’s right for your budget and lifestyle.

Seniors Who Need Basic, Comprehensive Coverage

Medigap Plan A (not to be confused with Medicare Part A) is the most basic Medigap insurance you can buy. All providers are required to offer it. While it’s typically the least-expensive plan, Mutual of Omaha’s price is higher than some other options. Plan A covers leftover costs from Medicare Parts A and B, plus additional coverage for 365 days after the Medicare limit.

Seniors Who Want Full Coverage Without High Deductibles or Out-of-Pocket Costs

Plans F and G offer the most coverage and are, therefore, generally the most expensive. They’re nearly identical, except that Plan G does not cover Part B deductibles (a $203 annual expense). Neither requires copays or coinsurance. Plan G is especially popular because it covers all Medicare-approved gap expenses except for Part B. Many positive customer reviews say they had little to no costs once they’d paid their Part B deductible. Both plans offer comprehensive coverage for many seniors’ needs, including hospital coverage, hospice care , outpatient care, skilled nursing facility coverage (up to $194.50 per day for days 21-100), and help with copayments for routine appointments.

Buyer's Tip: Mutual of Omaha offers up to a 12 percent household discount when two family members enroll together. This is an easy way to save on your plan!

Seniors on a Tight Budget Who Don’t Have Frequent Doctor’s Appointments

For seniors who don’t need to visit the doctor frequently, Plan N is a less expensive option for nearly full coverage. However, you’ll be charged a $20 copay for every office visit and a $50 copay for emergency room visits. Because Plan N doesn’t include the Medicare Part B deductible, you’ll also need to pay the $233 deductible (Plan N copayments don’t count toward the annual Part B deductible.).

Seniors With Chronic Health Conditions, Frequent Appointments, or Those Needing Major Procedures

High Deductible Plans F and G offer the most comprehensive coverage for the lowest monthly premiums. But because you have to pay more than $2,000 out-of-pocket before benefits kick in, they’re better for those who know they’ll reach or exceed that deductible to take advantage of the benefits. These might be good options if you’re managing a chronic illness, have frequent follow-up appointments with providers and specialists, or you anticipate undergoing surgery.

How Much Do Mutual of Omaha Medigap Plans Cost?

Monthly costs for a Mutual of Omaha Medigap plan can vary by hundreds of dollars depending on your age, gender, location, and other health factors. The prices below are an estimate for a 65-year-old male, but your exact rates will fluctuate depending on your specific information.

These numbers are individual; they do not reflect the additional household discount of up to 12 percent (applied if two family members enroll together).

How to Buy a Mutual of Omaha Medigap Policy

The good news is, you can apply for a Mutual of Omaha policy online. This isn’t an option with some Medigap providers we’ve reviewed, like Colonial Penn , so we like the added convenience. With an account, you can get same-day approval and downloadable temporary ID cards.

You don’t have to call anyone, but if you prefer to talk to someone over the phone, you can! Keep in mind that by requesting a quote over the phone, you’re consenting to agent calls. You can call Mutual of Omaha toll-free (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. CT) or fill out a contact form to have an agent call you.

Here’s how to buy a policy online:

  • Enter a valid email address.

When to Enroll for Mutual of Omaha Medigap Insurance

You can apply for Medigap insurance year-round. If you apply outside of your initial enrollment period, you could be denied coverage due to underwriting. 1 If you have underlying conditions, you might also have to wait up to six months before your coverage goes into effect.

Initial Enrollment Period: This is the first time you can sign up for Medicare Parts A, B, D, and Medigap. For seniors, it’s a seven-month window starting three calendar months before your 65th birthday month and ending three months after your birthday month. For example, June birthdays have an initial enrollment period of March 1 through September 31.

If you’re applying within your initial enrollment period, coverage starts on your birthday month. If your birthday is on the first day of the month, coverage begins the month prior.

Final Thoughts on Mutual of Omaha

With high marks for customer service and fast and efficient claim payments, Mutual of Omaha is consistently in the top 10 providers for Medigap coverage. But its policies can be on the higher side, especially if you don’t qualify for the 12 percent household discount. The company also only offers five of the 10 Medigap plan options, with some regions only offering two or three. Given its long and reputable history, Mutual of Omaha is a solid choice for older adults who want a comprehensive insurance “safety net” and can afford the deductibles, or for seniors who know they need frequent, skilled care and want to cap their out-of-pocket expenses.
