Convert an MBR disk into a GPT disk

  • 8 contributors
Applies To: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016

Master Boot Record (MBR) disks use the standard BIOS partition table. GUID partition table (GPT) disks use the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). One advantage of GPT disks is that you can have more than four partitions on each disk. GPT is also required for disks larger than 2 terabytes (TB).

You can change a disk from MBR to GPT partition format as long as the disk contains no partitions or volumes.

  • Before you convert a disk, back up any data on the disk, and close any programs that access the disk.
  • You must be a member of the Backup Operators or Administrators group, at minimum, to convert a disk.

Convert an MBR disk with Disk Management

To complete the disk conversion by using Disk Management, follow these steps.

Back up or move the data on the MBR disk prior to conversion.

Delete all partitions and volumes on the MBR disk.

  • For each partition or volume, select and hold (or right-click) the item, and select Delete Partition or Delete Volume .

Select and hold (or right-click) the MBR disk to convert to the GPT format, and select Convert to GPT Disk .

The process notifies you when the conversion completes.

Convert an MBR disk from the command line

To complete the disk conversion from the command line with the diskpart disk partition process, follow these steps.

Open an elevated command prompt: select and hold (or right-click) Command Prompt , and select Run as Administrator .

At the prompt, enter diskpart to initiate the disk partition process.

Prepare the MBR disk for conversion by cleaning (deleting) any partitions or volumes.

If the MBR disk doesn't have any partitions or volumes, skip to the last step to apply the conversion.

At the DISKPART prompt, enter list disk . Make a note of the MBR disk number that you want to convert to GPT format.

At the DISKPART prompt, enter select disk <disk-number> , where <disk-number> is the MBR disk number to convert.

At the DISKPART prompt, enter clean to delete all partitions and volumes on the disk.

At the DISKPART prompt, enter convert gpt to convert the MBR disk to the GPT partition format.

The diskpart process notifies you when the conversion completes.

Review diskpart commands

The following table shows a summary of the commands for the diskpart process.

Try the MBR2GPT conversion tool

As an alternate approach, you can use the MBR2GPT.EXE tool to convert the MBR disk to the GPT partition format. Keep in mind that the tool can be more complicated to use than the diskpart process. For details, see Convert MBR partition to GPT .

How to convert MBR to GPT drive to switch BIOS to UEFI on Windows 10

A PC with UEFI is more secure and faster than the legacy one using BIOS, and here's how to switch.

Convert MBR to GPT on Windows 10

When you want to switch firmware type from the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) to Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) without modifying the current installation or deleting the data stored on the drive, or you plan to upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 , you can convert the drive using a Master Boot Record (MBR) to a GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition style using the "MBR2GPT" tool.

BIOS is a piece of code that resides on the motherboard that connects the hardware and software. This code has been around for a long time, and while it worked well, it was never designed for modern hardware, and it had many limitations, including limitations to partitions smaller than 2TB.

UEFI is the new firmware type designed to replace the old BIOS style. It introduces additional features, including support for partitions larger than 2TB and faster startup, sleep, resume, and shutdown times. Also, it unlocks new security features available on Windows 11 and Windows 10. For instance, "Secure Boot" is a feature that can protect a device's startup process from malicious programs, and now it's a prerequisite to install Windows 11. "Device Guard" gives you more advanced controls for app access, and "Credential Guard" can help prevent pass-the-hash attacks.

In this Windows 10 guide, we will walk you through the steps and information to use the Microsoft MBR2GPT command-line tool to convert a drive from MBR to GPT partition style, to switch from BIOS to UEFI mode on your device, and enable Secure Boot correctly.

How to convert a drive from MBR to GPT on Windows 10

How to change the firmware mode from bios to uefi.

Warning: This is a non-destructive process, but it's still recommended to make a full backup of your PC before proceeding in case something goes wrong and you need to recover your setup.

Unlike older methods requiring a backup of your data and reinstalling Windows, the MBR2GPT tool makes it easy to change the partition style quickly. When using this tool, the conversion process adds the GPT components to the MBR partition without modifying the existing partition and maintaining the data untouched.

The best approach is switching to UEFI and performing a clean install of Windows 11. However, if you already have a Windows 10 installation that you want to upgrade, you can convert the drive to change the system firmware settings properly. Otherwise, the device will no longer start correctly.

Check MBR or GPT partition style

Before making system changes, check the current settings to see whether the system is set to MBR or GPT using these steps:

  • Open Start .
  • Search for Disk Management and click the top result to open the experience.
  • Right-click the drive (where Windows 10 resides) and select the Properties option.
  • Click on the Volumes tab.
  • Under the "Partition style" field, if the field reads GUID Partition Table (GPT) , the drive does not need conversion, but if you see the Master Boot Record (MBR) label, you will need to use the conversion tool.
  • Click the Cancel button.

Once you complete the steps, you can change the partition style on the computer.

Also, if you need to change the partition, check your device manufacturer's support website to find out whether the hardware includes support for UEFI before using these instructions.

Convert MBR to GPT partition style (offline)

To convert a drive using MBR to GPT on Windows 10, use these steps:

  • Open Settings .
  • Click on Update & Security .
  • Click on Recovery .
  • Under the "Advanced startup" section, click the Restart now button.
  • Click the Troubleshoot option.
  • Click on Advanced options .
  • Click the Command Prompt option.
  • Select your administrator account and sign in (if applicable).
  • Type the following command to validate the drive's requirements and press Enter : mbr2gpt /validate Quick tip: The mbr2gpt.exe is located in the "System32" folder inside the "Windows" folder. If you want to see all the available options, use the mbr2gpt /? command.
  • Type the following command to convert the drive from MBR to GPT and press Enter : mbr2gpt /convert
  • Click the Close button.
  • Click the Turn off your PC option.

After you complete the steps, the tool will validate the drive and create an EFI system partition (ESP). The process will also insert the UEFI boot files and GPT components into the partition. The tool will update the Boot Configuration Data (BCD), and the previous drive letter will be added to the drive.

Convert MBR to GPT partition style (online)

It's always recommended to use the MBR2GPT tool offline to avoid potential problems. However, you can also run it when the system is operational.

To convert a drive from MBR to GPT on Windows 10, use these steps:

  • Search for Command Prompt , right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  • Type the following command to validate the drive and press Enter : mbr2gpt /validate /allowFullOS
  • Type the following command to convert the drive to GPT and press Enter : mbr2gpt /convert /allowFullOS

Once you complete the steps, the command-line tool will reduce the size of the primary partition and change it from MBR to GPT.

MBR2GPT return codes

If the processes are completed successfully, the return code would be "0," but if the process fails, you may see one of the 11 error codes:

MBR2GPT important details

You can use the MBR2GPT tool on a traditional hard drive (HDD), solid-state drive (SSD), or an M.2 drive with virtually any version of Windows 10, but you must run the tool from a Windows 10 (version 1703 or later) installation.

When dealing with a drive using file encryption with BitLocker , you must first suspend the encryption before following the outlined instructions.

While MBR-style drives can have up to four primary partitions, the drive you want to convert can't have more than three partitions because one additional allocation is required to create the UEFI partition.

Finally, Microsoft designed the tool to convert drives running Windows 8.1, 7, or from an older version, but you can always upgrade the installation to the latest release of Windows 10 and then use the tool to convert from MBR to GPT.

After converting the drive to the GPT style, the computer will no longer start until you change the firmware type from BIOS to UEFI in the motherboard.

Typically, this process requires hitting one of the function keys (F1, F2, F3, F10, or F12), Esc, or Delete key as soon as you start the device. However, since these options are always different, it's best to check your device manufacturer's support website for more specific details.

On the firmware interface, find the "Boot" menu, enable the UEFI option, save the changes, and then the computer should start normally.

Also, if you plan to upgrade the device to Windows 11 while in the UEFI settings, open the boot or security settings page, make sure to enable the "Secure Boot" option, and exit the firmware saving the changes.

Check GPT partition style

To confirm the device is using a GPT partition style, use these steps:

  • Search for Disk Management and click the top result to open the app.
  • Right-click the main drive and select the Properties option.
  • Under the "Partition style" field, the information should now read GUID Partition Table (GPT) .

After you complete the steps, if the partition is running using the correct partition style, you only need to check whether the device uses the UEFI firmware mode.

Check UEFI firmware

To confirm the computer is in UEFI mode and Secure Boot is turned on, use these steps:

  • Search for msinfo32 and click the top result to open the System Information app.
  • Click on System Summary on the left pane.
  • Check the "BIOS Mode," which now should read UEFI .
  • Check the "Secure Boot State" information, which now should read On .

Once you complete the steps, if the System Information displays the mode as "UEFI," you have successfully switched the firmware type.

How to Convert MBR to GPT

What is gpt and mbr, how is gpt better than mbr.

Another thing that goes in the favor of GPT is that it stores multiple copies of data across the disk, making it a more robust solution in terms of data backup. In comparison, MBR disks store the partitioning and boot data in one place, making it more vulnerable to being overwritten or corrupted. One thing to note, however, is that GPT disks do not support legacy BIOS firmware , so you will have to convert the partition style from GPT to MBR before you can use it as system disk in older PCs.

What to Remember While Converting From MBR to GPT or Vice Versa

Method 1: convert mbr to gpt using disk management (data loss).

  • Search for ‘This PC’ in the Windows search bar. Now right-click on the result and select ‘Manage’.

How to Convert MBR to GPT in 3 Simple Ways

  • Now click on ‘Disk Management’ to list all the available disks.

Method 3: Convert MBR to GPT Using Gptgen Without Data Loss

  • First off, download and install an utility called ‘gptgn’ ( Free ). Remember the installation directory .
  • Now open Command Prompt in Admin mode and type in the path for your Gptgn installation using the syntax seen below . In my case, it is “C:\Users\<username>\Desktop\Stuff\File\gptgen-1.1” , so I’ll type in “cd c:\Users\<username>\Desktop\Stuff\File\gptgen-1.1” (without quotes). Do note that the drive letter will depend on your installation directory.

Gptgn

  • Run the ‘list disk’ command as described earlier. To convert the partition table of your target disk from MBR into GPT, type-in the command: ‘ gptgen.exe -w \\.\\physicaldriveX ‘ (without quotes) and press Enter (Note that ‘X’ denotes the disk you want to convert).

I love that the changes you make with EaseUS Partition Master Free aren't immediately applied to the disks. It makes it way easier to play out what will happen after you've made all the changes. I also think the overall look and feel of EaseUS Partition Master Free makes whatever you're doing with your computer's partitions easy.

Partition Master Free can Resize, Move, Merge, Migrate, and Copy disks or partitions; convert to local, change label, defragment, check and explore partition; and much more. A premium upgrade adds free tech support and the ability to resize dynamic volumes.

It won't hot image your drives or align them, but since it's coupled with a partition manager, it allows you do perform many tasks at once, instead of just cloning drives. You can move partitions around, resize them, defragment, and more, along with the other tools you'd expect from a cloning tool.

How to Convert MBR to GPT Without Losing Data in Windows

There are two easy ways to convert MBR to GPT without losing a scrap of data. In this tutorial, we cover both methods.

Your hard drives all need one thing to keep track of what's on them: a partition table. The partition table describes the partitions (sections) of the drive and helps your system find the files you need.

Windows uses a master boot record (MBR) or GUID Partition Table (GPT) depending on your operating system and firmware. Sometimes it's necessary to switch between MBR and GPT, but doing so can result in data loss.

However, there are two tools you can use to switch from MBR to GPT without incurring data loss. So, here's how to convert your MBR disk to GPT without losing a scrap of data.

MBR vs. GPT

First up, consider the differences between MBR and GPT and why some systems use one over the other.

MBR is the older of the two and therefore is compatible with a wider range of systems. MBR was developed for IBM PCs and, as such, was the primary partition table choice for Windows machines stretching for quite some time. The Master Boot Record takes its name from its location at the beginning of the drive, containing the bootloader for the operating system and information about the drive partitions.

MBR only works with drives up to 2TB in size. Furthermore, an MBR drive can only have four primary partitions. This was fine when a 2TB drive was a substantial outlay, but you can now pick up an 8TB drive, like a Seagate Barracuda , for an affordable price.

GPT is the newer of the two. GPT is closely associated with UEFI, the firmware solution modernizing the old alternative, BIOS. The GUID Partition Table assigns every partition on your drive a globally unique identifier (GUID), a 128-bit number that identifies only your hardware (a 128-bit integer has a maximum value of 1.7 x 10^39—a phenomenally large number).

GPT drives suffer few of the limitations of an MBR drive. GPT drives can be vastly larger than their MBR counterparts (with the right settings, a theoretical 256TB drive would work). On a Windows system, GPT drives can have up to 128 different partitions without using an extended partition. Other systems allow even more.

One additional major difference is in how GPT drives store boot data. Unlike the MBR drive, the GPT drive stores multiple copies of the boot data across several partitions, making recovery much easier .

Compatibility

Not all versions of Windows can boot from a GPT partitioned drive, with many requiring a UEFI-based system.

  • 64-bit Windows 11, 10, 8/8.1, 7, and Vista all require a UEFI-based system to boot from a GPT drive.
  • 32-bit Windows 10 and 8/8.1 require a UEFI-based system to boot from a GPT drive. There is no 32-bit version of Windows 11.
  • 32-bit Windows 7 and Vista cannot boot from a GPT drive.
  • All mentioned Windows versions can read from and write to a GPT drive.

Other operating systems also use GPT systems. For instance, Apple now uses GPT rather than its Apple Partition Table (APT). Furthermore, Linux has built-in support for GPT drives.

The launch of Windows 11 in 2021 forced many users to switch their existing drive partition from MBR to GPT. Windows 11 will only boot from a UEFI GPT drive, which has caused some users issues while attempting to make the switch.

How to Convert MBR to GPT

As we have seen, GPT is the more modern partition table type , offering better recovery and more overall versatility. For a long time, converting from an MBR drive to a GPT drive meant wiping the drive as part of the conversion process. But now, there are two tools you can use to safely convert from MBR to GPT without any data loss.

Note: There is no going back unless you wipe your drive. MBR to GPT is a one-way transformation. Please also remember there is a small chance your drive will cease to function after the conversion. While this is an extremely small chance, MakeUseOf and I accept no responsibility for your hardware if you continue with this tutorial after this warning. In this, the validation step in the upcoming tutorial is very important .

There is one final check to make before converting your disk. Does your hardware have UEFI support? If not, your hardware won't register the drive following conversion and, if converting a bootable drive, you will not have access to your operating system .

Microsoft's MBR2GPT tool is already on your system as part of the Windows 10 Creators Update.

The free MBR to GPT tool primarily caters to sysadmins who have to deploy Windows 10 installations on a large number of computers. However, you can use it to switch your MBR drive to GPT with minimal hassle.

  • First, check your disk number. Complete a Start menu search for Computer Management and select the Best match. Select Disk Management and locate the disk you want to convert, noting the disk number. Right-click the disk number, select Properties and open the Volume Check the current partition type is MBR.
  • Press Windows + X , then select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu. If Command Prompt (Admin) is no longer an option, complete a Start menu search for Command Prompt, then right-click and select Run as Administrator .

  • Type mbr2gpt /convert /disk:[enter your disk number here] /allowFullOS and press Enter to begin the conversion. The conversion is rapid, only taking a few seconds.
  • You need to change your firmware to boot to UEFI mode. After your system restart, press your BIOS/UEFI entry key . Change the boot type to UEFI mode instead of Legacy Mode or other equivalents.

EaseUS Partition Software

The second option for converting MBR to GPT without data loss is to use EaseUS Partition Master Professional. Some may find this the easier of the two conversion options, using a similar UI to the Windows Disk Management screen. Furthermore, EaseUS Partition Software has several additional options, not least of which is the Convert MBR to GPT tool .

However, EaseUS Partition Master Professional will set you back $39.95, while the Windows integrated MBR2GPT tool is free, already part of your operating system.

  • Head to the EaseUS Partition Master site . Purchase the software, download, and install. ( Tip: If you're only converting one drive, grab the Trial version.)
  • Open EaseUS Partition Master and wait for your drives to load. Next, locate the drive you want to convert. Select the disk, right-click, and select Convert MBR to GPT .
  • Press the Apply button on the toolbar. Once you hit apply, your system will reboot. You'll arrive at an EaseUS Partition Master operation screen that shows the conversion process taking place.
  • You need to change your firmware to boot to UEFI mode. After your system restart, press your BIOS/UEFI entry key. Change the boot type to UEFI mode, as opposed to Legacy Mode or other equivalents.

So, EaseUS Partition Master makes the MBR to GPT conversion process easier but is slightly slower than its free Microsoft counterpart.

MBR to GPT Conversion Complete!

You have now converted your old MBR drive into a GPT drive, granting additional control over how you use your drive. After switching up your partition table and moving from BIOS to UEFI, you'll find that you have more control over your system firmware, too. After all, that's one of the main reasons UEFI was introduced, to enable greater control and more advanced options over your hardware.

How to convert SSD from MBR to GPT: A step-by-step guide

GPT is the newer and more versatile technology than MBR.

Master Boot Record (MBR) and GUID Partition Table (GPT) are two different partitioning schemes that you can use for your SSDs and HDDs . They play a vital role in managing the disk structure, and determining how the data is stored or accessed. MBR dates back to the 80s, meaning it works well with older computers with legacy BIOS firmware, whereas GPT is a more modern alternative that was developed as a part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI).

Both MBR and GPT have their advantages and disadvantages, and there are plenty of factors to consider when it comes to deciding between them. GPT, in general, is better for those using a modern computer running on, say, Windows 10 or Windows 11, as it allows you to have a greater number of partitions than MBR. It also supports significantly larger partition sizes, making it ideal for multi-boot systems and scenarios that require multiple partitions. If you ever find the need to convert your SSD from MBR to GPT and are wondering how to do it, then here's a step-by-step guide detailing how to do it.

The steps highlighted below to convert MBR to GPT are the same for both SSDs and HDDs, meaning you can follow the same tutorial for all your drives.

Converting an MBR drive to GPT with Windows Disk Management tool

A built-in windows tool that works very well.

Disk Management is a built-in Windows disk utility that's very useful to manage the drives on your PC. It's the same tool we recommend to those who want to partition an SSD as it's very easy to use and works very well. You can also use this tool as a Windows Administrator to convert the disk partition style from MBR to GPT. It's a fairly simple process that only takes a couple of minutes, so let's take a look.

You'll lose all the data on the MBR disk while converting it to GPT, so back up or move them before proceeding.

  • Press Windows + R keys, and type diskmgmt.msc in the dialog box to open the Windows Disk Management tool.
  • Right-click on the partition or volume of the MBR drive you want to convert and select Delete volume .
  • Click Yes when prompted to delete the volume.

Converting an MBR drive to GPT with Command Prompt/Diskpart

Easily convert with a few commands.

Alternatively, you can also use Windows Command Prompt to convert an MBR disk to GPT. This method is also fairly simple and only takes a few minutes to get it done.

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

A screenshot showing the highlighted Run as administrator option.

Closing thoughts

And that's how easy it is to convert an MBR disk to GPT in Windows using the built-in tools. Both Disk Management as well as the Diskpart prompt in Command Prompt work very well to convert an MBR disk to GPT. You can, however, use third-party tools like EaseUS Partition Master to convert them as well. These tools also offer other storage/partition-related tools that let you create, delete, resize, extend, and more in one place, making them a great option for those who don't want to deal with multiple tools.

How To Convert MBR To GPT For Free In Windows 10 (Without Data Loss)

Convert MBR to GPT

If you want to use UEFI boot mode instead of BIOS, you will need to convert MBR to GPT. While it’s easier to select UEFI directly when you are installing Windows, it becomes tricky when you are using Windows and want to convert MBR to GPT without losing your data.

Master Boot Record or MBR for short, and GUID Partition Table (GPT) are both partition styles of computers running Windows. There are several differences between the two.

MBR supports up to 2TB of partition size with a maximum of four primary partitions. MBR is an older partition format which was used along with BIOS startup.

GPT partition style has the ability to manage 128 primary partitions and 256TB of partition size.

Table of Contents

Here is a quick reference of which partition format is better for you.

There are three basic methods for converting MBR to GPT disk while preventing data loss. We will detail all of them below. It is highly recommended that users back up their data before performing any of the following operations to be on the safer side.

Furthermore, make sure that if you are converting systems disk to GPT, then your motherboard should be able to support EFI/UEFI boot mode.

Convert MBR to GPT using Diskpart utility

The first method is to simply use Diskpart. Diskpart is the replacement of fdisk and has been included as a utility in Windows operating systems since Windows 2000. It allows for command-line disk partitioning and it can be used to easily convert MBR to GPT partition without any risk to data. The steps for this are as follows.

diskpart Run

  • You can also open the command prompt during Windows installation. Just press Shift + F10 . Then type diskpart and press Enter to open the command-line utility. (This step is only required if you are booting Windows from a USB or DVD drive.)

Diskpart list disk

Convert MBR to GPT Using Disk Management

The second method commonly used to convert MBR to GPT without losing data is to use Disk Management.

Disk Management is also included in Windows. It is a graphical tool as opposed to diskpart.

As it allows viewing and management of disk drives on a PC, it can also be used to convert MBR to GPT without data loss. Simply follow the steps given below to convert an MBR disk to GPT.

  • Open the Run dialog (Windows key + R) and type diskmgmt.msc . This will open the Disk Management console.
  • Select the disk you want to convert and then go to Actions menu –> All tasks –> Convert to GPT. This will convert MBR to GPT.

Please note that if your disk is already GPT, you will get an option to convert GPT to MBR.

One more thing to note here is that the graphical tool will not be able to convert the system disk (where Windows is installed) to GPT or MBR.

If you want to convert the system disk, you may use the next method which is using the mbr2gpt tool.

Convert MBR To GPT Using MBR2GPT Tool

These are the methods that use utilities available within Windows 10 that anyone can use. If you want even more control over the conversion process, you can use the MBR2GPT tool included in the later versions of Windows 10, build 1703 and above.

This tool has been designed to be run from Windows PE (Preinstallation Environment), however, the /allowFullOS command can be used to run it from the full operating system.

However, it is recommended that it is run before you convert the BIOS to UEFI, in WinPE. Any errors after the firmware has been converted can brick the PC until manual conversion back to BIOS is successful.

As this tool is for a specific task, we will run a checklist before executing the convert command, this includes the following: Failing any of the checks will not run the command.

  • Current partition: Must be MBR, and of a type that Windows 10 can recognize. If not, then you need to specify mapping using /map.
  • Space required by both primary and secondary GPT’s (16KB + 2 sectors at the front, while 16KB + 1 sector at the end)
  • The number of primary partitions on target does not exceed 3
  • One partition is set active and configured as system partition, while the BCD store has a default OS and that in turn directs to the OS partition.
  • No logical partitions.
  • All volumes have valid, retrievable volume ID’s with drive letters.

Use the following commands to run the tool, depending on the environment.

If you are running the tool on WinPE, use the following command

X is the disk number you have from diskpart

If you are running Windows 10, use the following command

I’ve had great success using the mbr2gpt tool. While the first two methods are good for converting non-system hard drives from MBR partition style to GPT, mbr2gpt is the ultimate tool for converting any kind of drive to GPT.

There are third party tools like MiniTool Partition Wizard, Disk Genius, Partition Magic that can easily and safely convert any type of partition style.

I recommend using these tools only if you are not using the latest version of Windows 10 or if you want to use a visual tool for easy conversion without data loss.

Cannot convert from MBR to GPT

I want to upgrade my disk from MBR to GPT, and I tried using Windows' MBR2GPT.EXE tool to do the job. I used Windows' DISKPART tool to identify the disk I want to convert. However, this happened:

and the conversion failed. Using Diskpart again, I get the following output:

Looking at the partitions on disk 0, there are 2 primary partitions and 2 hidden ones, I read here that the partitions might have something to do with the conversion failing, so I believe this is the culprit. If anyone could offer help converting my disk, that would be greatly appreciated.

Hidden just means that the OS won't mount those partitions automatically . It isn't related to the success or failure of the conversion, since it's just a different value in the partition type field, the format of the partition is still the same

The MBR2GPT documentation says that in order to convert the drive to GPT all the following conditions must be met

The disk is currently using MBR There is enough space not occupied by partitions to store the primary and secondary GPTs: 16KB + 2 sectors at the front of the disk 16KB + 1 sector at the end of the disk There are at most 3 primary partitions in the MBR partition table One of the partitions is set as active and is the system partition The disk does not have any extended/logical partition The BCD store on the system partition contains a default OS entry pointing to an OS partition The volume IDs can be retrieved for each volume which has a drive letter assigned All partitions on the disk are of MBR types recognized by Windows or has a mapping specified using the /map command-line option https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/mbr-to-gpt

I'm not sure what type your recovery partitions are, but if they're both primary then you're out of luck. Another common issue is that there's no space left at the end of the drive for the backup GPT entries. In that case you need to resize the last partition to make space for them.

You can read Why does MBR2GPT conversion failed and how to fix? to see if it helps

But it's recommended to use a 3 rd party solution, since Windows' built-in tools like diskmgmt.msc and mbr2gpt have very limited capability compared to external ones and can't solve complex situations. Some suggestions:

  • MiniTool Partition Wizard
  • EaseUS Partition Master
  • AOMEI Partition Assistant

After resolving all the other Windows 11 upgrade requirements, I got stuck on converting my boot partition from MBR (Master Boot Record) to GPT (GUID Partition Table).

My reluctance to purchase a third-party program for a one-use event set me on a mission to find the truth. After hours of research, I stumbled on a post by James Preston who figured out what mbr2gpt was actually doing and potentially why it can potentially fail.

For posterity (and in case his site ever goes down) I will copy/paste his suggestion to this answer for the benefit of anyone else landing here while researching the same issue:

So after realizing that my desktop PC has been running in BIOS mode (how 1970s and probably the result of multiple clones from HDD to 10k HDD, to 10k HDD in RAID0 to SSD and to another SSD) and with a free weekend I thought it was time to have a look at the MBR2GPT tool. However in running the validate phase I was getting the error message: "Disk layout validation failed for disk 0"

After following through a few red herrings on the internet I had a bit more of a dig into what the tool was up to and it appears that one of the first steps is to shrink the OS partition.

It appears that the fix is actually to preempt this and shrink the OS partition yourself (I reduced it by about 1GB – which made sense as one of the new partitions goes right in at the end of the disk), given these kinds of steps should only be performed by a person who knows what they are doing and understands the implications I won’t go into any detail as to how to do this other than providing the screenshot below.

Disk Management Screenshot

This personally worked for me, and I was finally able to overcome the UEFI boot requirement for Windows 11.

Using Diskpart to Initialize Disk into MBR/GPT Format

To use a brand new hard disk, you need to initialize it first. Diskpart can initialize disk to MBR or GPT via command line in Windows 11/10/8/7.

  • Method 1. Use Diskpart to initialize disk
  • Method 2. Initialize a disk with AOMEI Partition Assistant (GUI)
  • Method 3. Initialize disk with AOMEI Partition Assistant command-line

Why do you want to initialize disk?

When you use a new disk, you'll receive a message that says "You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it," prompting you to do so. Alternatively, you might prepare a disk for reuse. So, how does one go about initializing a disk? Here are three methods to go about it.

3 methods to initialize disk in Windows

Method 1. use diskpart to initialize disk.

Diskpart is one of Windows' basic utilities with command lines. You can use it to manage your disk/partition/volume with a special command line, such as create/delete/format/extend/shrink partitions and initialize/convert disk, etc. It is more powerful than Windows Disk Management.

To use a new disk or wipe an existing disk, initializing the disk with Diskpart can work it out.

Step 1. You can press "WIN+R" and type "cmd" to open the prompt. Then, type diskpart in the prompt and press "Enter".

Step 2.  Type the following commands and press "Enter" after each.

• list disk  • select disk x • attributes cleared successfully  (it can move to the next step smoothly) • online disk • convert mbr  or convert gpt  (to change the selected disk to MBR format or GPT format according to your requirements).

Initialize

Once you initialized the disk and convert the disk into MBR format or GPT format, you can create a partition on it, which is pragmatic. You can use Diskpart to create a partition for you.

Method 2. Initialize a disk with AOMEI Partition Assistant (GUI)

The Diskpart does have a good way to help you initialize a disk. But there still are many other ways to initialize a disk. For example, initializing a hard disk using AOMEI Partition Assistant could be simpler. AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional  is a great alternative if you don't like to use commands or Diskpart can't initialize the target successfully.

It contains a cmd utility called Partassist.exe, which can replace the Diskpart of Windows, and it also provides you GUI for initializing a disk. And also provides a way to initialize the disk with its concise interface. With the GUI (graphical user interface), you can use a few mouse clicks to replace initializing disk via the Diskpart command.

Step 1.  Install and launch AOMEI Partition Assistant. Select the disk you want to initialize, right-click it. Then, select "Initialize Disk" in the pop-out menu.

Initialize Disk

Step 2. Select to initialize the disk to MBR/GPT. Click "OK".

Select Disk Style

Step 3.  Click " Apply" at  the toolbar to confirm the operations.

Apply Proceed

The AOMEI Partition Assistant initializing disk with an intuitive interface is much simpler than using Windows Diskpart to initialize disk. Besides, you can use it to do more for partitioning a hard drive . And it supports most Windows systems, as for the Windows Server system, you can use the Server Edition .

Method 3. Initialize disk with AOMEI Partition Assistant command-line

If you cannot use the CMD in the right way, you can also use the interface of AOMEI Partition Assistant to skip step-by-step operations. Partassit.exe utility can do much more for users than Diskpart. To use the partassist.exe command-line utility, click the "Start" menu, type "cmd" in the search box, or press "WIN + R" keys and type "cmd" to open a prompt, then run it as an administrator.

After that, Command Prompt will open. In the command window, please type the following lines and press "Enter" after each. Here we take an example of how to initialize a disk as GPT.

• cd installation directory of AOMEI Partition Assistant (e.g. cd C:\Program Files \AOMEI Partition Assistant). • partassist.exe /list  ( To list all disks on your computer.) • partassist.exe / init:1 /gpt   (To convert Disk 1 into GPT disk style.)

Open AOMEI CMD

Wait till the progress reaches 100%. It will tell you "The operation completed successfully".

Initialize Disk Successfully

If you wish to avoid using orders in diskpart to initialize disk, you can try AOMEI Partition Assistant to do this work. And if you have some initialized disk wish to change the partition style, you can also convert to GPT/MBR with this powerful tool without losing any data, no matter the target disk is a system disk or data disk.
