How to set a static IP address on Windows 11

Here are the steps to set a static IP address on Windows 11 with Command Prompt, PowerShell, Control Panel, and Settings.

Avatar for Mauro Huculak

UPDATED 7/21/2023: On Windows 11, a static IP address is a network configuration that never changes, making it the preferred option to share files , a printer on a local network , or configure port forwarding.

Usually, when a computer connects to the network, it receives a dynamic IP address assigned by the local Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. The only problem is that this configuration can change at any time, as soon as you restart the computer or after the settings expire, and this can cause services like port forwarding and remote desktop to stop working. A static network configuration always maintains the same settings, making it ideal for hosting services that other users can access through the network.

This guide will teach you how to set a static IP (version 4) address on Windows 11 . (See also this video tutorial with the steps to complete this task.)

Assign static IP address on Windows 11 from Command Prompt

Assign static ip address on windows 11 from powershell, assign static ip address on windows 11 from settings, assign static ip address on windows 11 from control panel.

To set a static IP address on Windows 11 with Command Prompt, use these steps:

Open Start on Windows 11.

Search for Command Prompt , right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.

Type the following command to see your current networking configuration and press Enter :

Under the network adapter, note the name of the adapter as well as the following information in these fields:

  • Subnet mask
  • Default Gateway
  • DNS Servers

Windows 11 ipconfig all command

Type the following command to assign a static IP address on Windows 11 and press Enter :

In the above command, replace “Ethernet0” with the name of your network adapter. Change “10.1.4.119 255.255.255.0 10.1.4.1” with the device IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway address corresponding to the local area network.

Type the following command to set a DNS server address and press Enter :

In the command, make sure to change “Ethernet0” with your adapter’s name and “10.1.4.1” with the DNS server address of the network.

Type the following command to set an alternate DNS server address and press Enter :

In the command, change “Ethernet0” with the adapter’s name and “8.8.8.8” with an alternate DNS server address.

Windows 11 netsh command to set static IP address

After completing the steps, you can use the ping command (for example ping google.com ) to see if the configuration works correctly.

You can use PowerShell with the “NetTCPIP” module to manage networking settings, including changing the IP address settings to a static configuration.

To set a static IP address with PowerShell, use these steps:

Open Start .

Search for PowerShell , right-click the result, and select the Run as administrator option.

Type the following command to view your current network configuration and press Enter :

Get-NetIPConfiguration

Confirm the following network information:

  • InterfaceIndex
  • IPv4Address
  • IPv4DefaultGateway

Type the following command to set a static IP address and press Enter :

PowerShell assign static IP address

In the command, replace the “InterfaceIndex” number (10) with the corresponding number of your adapter. Change “IPAddress” with the static IP address you want to assign to your device. Change “PrefixLength” (subnet mask) with the correct bit number if necessary. Typically, on a home network, the setting is “24.” Also, change the “DefaultGateway” option with the default gateway address of the network.

Type the following command to assign a DNS server address and press Enter :

PowerShell assign static DNS address

If you need to set a secondary DNS server address, use a comma to use the same command with another address. For example:

In the command, replace the “InterfaceIndex” number (10) with your network adapter’s corresponding number. Also, change “ServerAddresses” with the DNS IP address.

Once you complete the steps, the new network configuration will apply to the computer.

Regardless of your chosen method, always assign a TCP/IP address in the network range and outside of the DHCP server scope to allow proper connectivity and avoid configuration conflicts. The reason is that multiple computers sharing the same address will cause problems, preventing them from connecting to the internet.

On Windows 11, you can set a static IP address configuration from the Settings app for wireless and wired adapters.

Set static IP address on Wi-Fi adapter

To assign a static IP address configuration to a Wi-Fi adapter, use these steps:

Open Settings on Windows 11.

Specify a Default Gateway address.

Specify a Preferred DNS address (required).

(Optional) Specify an “Alternate DNS” address.

Use the “DNS over HTTPS” drop-down menu and select the Off option for the preferred and alternate addresses, but you can enable DoH with these options:

  • Off: Transmits all DNS traffic without encryption.
  • On (automatic template): Sends all DNS traffic with encryption.
  • On (manual template): Allows you to specify a specific template. It is only required if the DNS service doesn’t work automatically or has a template that works as expected.

Turn off the “Fallback to plaintext” toggle switch (if you enable DoH).

Click the Save button.

Once you complete the steps, the static network configuration will apply to the computer. You can test the new settings by opening the web browser and loading a website.

Set static IP address on Ethernet adapter

To assign a static IP address to an Ethernet (wired) adapter on Windows 11, use these steps:

Open Settings .

Click the Ethernet  tab.

Open Ethernet settings

After you complete the steps, you can test your settings using your web browser to open a website.

On Windows 11, you can still use Control Panel to change the IP settings for Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapters.

To assign a static IP configuration through the Control Panel, use these steps:

Open Control Panel .

Click on Network and Internet .

Click on  Network and Sharing Center .

Click the Change adapter settings option on the left navigation pane.

Open Change adapter settings

Right-click the network adapter and select the Properties option.

Select the “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” option.

Click the Properties button.

Control Panel open TCP/IPv4 properties

Select the “Use the following IP address” option.

Assign the static IP address – for example, 10.1.4.119 .

Set static IPv4 address in Control Panel

Specify a Subnet mask . Typically, on a home network, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 .

Specify a Default gateway address – for example, 10.1.4.1 (Usually, your router’s address).

Under the “Use the following DNS server addresses set Preferred DNS server” section, set the “Preferred DNS server address,” which is usually your router’s IP address or server IP address providing DNS resolutions (for example, 10.1.4.1 ).

(Optional) Specify an “Alternative DNS server,” which the computer will use if it cannot reach the preferred DNS server.

Click the OK button.

Click the Close button again.

Once you complete the steps, you can open the web browser and load a website to see if the configuration works.

If you want to revert the changes, you can use these instructions to remove the static settings to configure a dynamic IP address on Windows 11.

How to configure a static IP on Windows 10 or 11

Do you need to switch from a dynamic to a static IP address configuration on Windows 11 or 10? Here's how.

Windows 11 static IP

  • Windows 11 static IP
  • Windows 10 static IP

On Windows, the router's Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is (usually) responsible for assigning a dynamic Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) configuration to every device in the network, including to your computer running Windows 11 or Windows 10.

Although a dynamic IP address is the recommended configuration for most situations, you may need to change to a static IP address if you're thinking about setting up a printer or file sharing, or you have to configure port forwarding on the router to your computer.

The reason is that a dynamic network configuration can change at any time after the lease from the DHCP expires and if the address changes, network resources you may have configured will stop working. Setting a static IP address will always stay the same on the computer, allowing a more reliable experience sharing resources in the network or forwarding ports.

Whatever the reason, on Windows 10 and 11, you have many ways to configure a static TCP/IP address, including using the Settings app and Command Prompt.

This guide will walk you through the different ways to configure a static network configuration on Windows 11 and 10.

How to set a static TCP/IP network configuration on Windows 11

On Windows 11, you can change your computer's dynamic IP configuration to static in at least two ways through the Settings app or commands.

Configure IP from Settings app

To assign a permanent TCP/IP configuration on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Open  Settings .
  • Click on  Network & internet .
  • (Optional) Click on Advanced network settings .
  • Under the "More settings" section, click on Hardware and connection properties.
  • Note the current IPv4 ,  Subnet mask ,  Default Gateway , and  DNS server addresses to determine the new configuration, as it has to be in the same network scope.
  • Click the  Ethernet  or  Wi-Fi  page on the right side from the "Network & internet." page.
  • Quick note:  If you select the Wi-Fi page, you need to click on the connection properties to access the network settings.
  • Click on the  Edit  button for the "IP assignment" setting.
  • Select the  Manual  option from the drop-down menu.
  • Turn on the  IPv4  toggle switch.
  • Confirm the IP address for the computer – for example, 10.1.4.90.
  • Confirm the subnet mask for the configuration – for example, 255.255.255.0.
  • Confirm the default gateway address (usually your router's IP) – for example, 10.1.4.1.
  • Confirm the preferred DNS address – for example, 10.1.4.1.
  •   Quick note:  In a home network, you may also be able to use the router's IP address for the DNS configuration. You can also use third-party DNS services like Google Public DNS, Cloudflare, Cisco's OpenDNS, and others.
  • (Optional) Select the  "On (automatic template)"  option for the "DNS over HTTPS" setting and leave the  "Fallback to plaintext"  option disabled unless you want to encrypted as well as unencrypted traffic or you're troubleshooting connectivity.
  • Quick note:  DNS over HTTPS (DoH) is a feature that encrypts the DNS queries over the HTTPS protocol to improve security and privacy on the internet. You only want to enable this feature if the DNS server supports this feature.
  • Confirm the alternate DNS address (if applicable).
  • (Optional) Select the  "On (automatic template)"  option for the "DNS over HTTPS" setting and leave the  "Fallback to plaintext"  option disabled.
  • Click the  Save  button.

Once you complete the steps, the computer will start using the static network configuration. If everything has been configured correctly, you should be able to open the web browser to access the internet.

If you entered an address (such as the DNS address) and then changed it, you probably won't be able to save the settings. If this is the case, cancel the configuration, start over, enter the correct configuration, and then try to save the settings.

Configure IP from Command Prompt

To set a static TCP/IP configuration on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Open  Start .
  • Search for  Command Prompt , right-click the top result, and select the  Run as administrator  option.
  • Type the following command to see your current networking configuration and press  Enter : ipconfig /all
  • Confirm the name of the adapter and the networking configuration, including the IPv4 , Subnet mask , Default Gateway , and DNS Servers .
  • Type the following command to configure a static TCP/IP address and press  Enter :  netsh interface ip set address name= "ADAPTER-NAME" static IP-ADDRESS SUBNET-ADDRESS DEFAULT-GATEWAY-ADDRESS

In the above command, replace  ADAPTER-NAME  with the name of your network adapter. Change  IP-ADDRESS SUBNET-ADDRESS    DEFAULT-GATEWAY-ADDRESS  with the device IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway addresses you want. For example, this command sets the 10.1.4.90, 255.255.255.0, 10.1.4.1 configuration:  netsh interface ip set address name="Ethernet 10Gb" static 10.1.4.90 255.255.255.0 10.1.4.1

  • Type the following command to set a DNS server address and press  Enter :  netsh interface ip set dns name="ADAPTER-NAME" static DNS-ADDRESS

In the command, change  ADAPTER-NAME  with your adapter's name and  DNS-ADDRESS  with the DNS server address of the network. For example, this command sets the local router as the DNS server:  netsh interface ip set dns name="Ethernet 10Gb" static 10.1.4.1

  • Type the following command to set an alternate DNS server address and press  Enter :  netsh interface ip add dns name="ADAPTER-NAME" DNS-ADDRESS index=2

In the command, change  ADAPTER-NAME  with the adapter's name and  DNS-ADDRESS  with an alternate DNS server address. For example, netsh interface ip add dns name="Ethernet 10Gb" 1.1.1.1 index=2

After you complete the steps, the commands will set a static network configuration on Windows 11.

How to set a static TCP/IP network configuration on Windows 10

On Windows 10, you can also use the Settings app and Command Prompt to set up a static IP network configuration.

To assign a permanent TCP/IP configuration on Windows 10, use these steps:

  • Click on  Ethernet  or  Wi-Fi .
  • Click on the active connection on the right side.
  • Click the  Edit  button for the "IP assignment" setting.
  • Select the  Manual  option.
  • Confirm the subnet prefix length (subnet mask) for the configuration – for example, 24 to specify the 255.255.255.0 subnet mask.
  • Quick tip:  It's important to use the number that represents the network instead of the subnet mask. Otherwise, the configuration won't save. If you don't know the subnet prefix length for your subnet mask, you can use any  online subnet calculator  to find out.

Once you complete the steps, Windows 10 will start using the static IP configuration. If you lose network connectivity, restart the computer to regain access to the local network and internet.

To change from dynamic to static IP address with commands on Windows 10, use these steps:

In the command, change  ADAPTER-NAME  with your adapter's name and  DNS-ADDRESS  with the DNS server address of the network. For example, this command sets the local router as the DNS server:  netsh interface ip set dns name=" Ethernet 10Gb" static 10.1.4.1

In the command, change  ADAPTER-NAME  with the adapter's name and  DNS-ADDRESS  with an alternate DNS server address. For example, netsh interface ip add dns name="Ethernet0" 1.1.1.1 index=2

After you complete the steps, the network configuration will switch from dynamic to static on Windows 10.

How to Set Up Static IP Address on Windows 11

If you don’t want your IP address to change every time you reconnect to a WiFi network, you must set up a static IP address on Windows 11. This guide shows you how.

Unlike dynamic IP addresses, which are automatically and randomly assigned by the router, a static IP address remains constant. i.e., your IP address won’t change even after reconnecting to the network. There are several advantages to using a static IP address. It gives your device a constant identity and allows other devices on your network to communicate with your device easily. For example, a static IP address makes it easy to access your device using Remote Desktop. Additionally, assigning a static IP to Windows 11 allows you to set up specific rules, such as network speed limitations, website blocks, etc., in the router to better manage the network connection.

In this small tutorial, let me take you through setting up a static IP address on your Windows 11 system from Settings and Command Prompt.

Assign static IP address on Windows 11 from Settings

To set up static IP address on Windows 11, follow the steps given below.

Step 1: Launch the Settings on Windows 11.

Use the Windows key + I keyboard shortcut or right-click on the taskbar’s Start icon and click on the “Settings” option. This action will open the Settings app.

Step 2: Open the network properties.

In the Settings window, go to the “Network & Internet” tab on the sidebar, click on Wi-Fi, and then click on the current network properties option. If you are using an ethernet connection, click on ethernet and then click on the network properties option.

click on Windows 11 WiFi network properties

Step 3: Click the Edit button next to IP Assignment.

Now, scroll down to the IP Assignment section and click on the Edit button. This action allows you to edit the IP address settings on Windows 11.

edit network IP configuration - click on edit

Step 4: Enable the IPv4 option and add the preferred IP address, Subnet mask, default gateway, and preferred DNS address.

In the Edit Network IP Settings window, enable the IPv4 option and type the below details in their respective fields and click on the “Ok” button to save the changes.

  • Preferred IP address: The IP address you want to assign to Windows 11.55
  • Subnet mask: You can get this from the router’s local network settings.
  • Default gateway: You can get this from the router’s local network settings.
  • Preferred DNS: You can either use the DNS provided by your router or a custom DNS server .

enter IP address details to set up static IP address on Windows 11

That is it. With that, you’ve assigned a static IP address. From now on, the router will automatically assign the static IP address whenever you system connects to it assuming you’ve configured relevant rules in the router.

Assign static IP address on Windows 11 from Command Prompt

Follow the steps below to set up static IP address using Command Prompt on Windows 11.

First of all, open the Command Prompt window . You can do that by searching for Command Prompt in the Start menu. Alternatively, open Windows Terminal and launch the Command Prompt tab in it.

Before you can set up the static IP address, you need a few important details such as the subnet mask, default gateway, and preferred DNS. To get them run the ipconfig /all command . This will list all the network adapters and their configuration details. Next, note down the adapter name and IP addresses of the Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers (note down the IPv4 address).

ipconfig /all command

Now, run the below command while replacing the dummy text with the actual details you noted down.

netsh interface ip set address name="AdapterName" static IPAddress SubnetMask DNSAddress

Once you replace all the details like the adapter name subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server, this is what the command looks like.

netsh interface ip set address name="Wi-Fi" static 192.168.142.42 255.255.255.0 192.168.142.1

This will assign the static IP. From now on, the router will automatically assign the static IP address whenever your system connects to it assuming you’ve configured relevant rules in the router.

That is it. I hope this small tutorial helped you in making Windows 11 use a static IP address.

How to Assign a Static IP Address in Windows 11/10

Soni Aryan

  • August 5, 2021

In this guide, we will look at different ways that can help you to assign a static IP address on Windows 11/10 PC. Before we dive into how to perform this task, let’s first understand what differs between Static or Automatic IP addressing.

If you had not configured your IP address, your device must be assigned automatically via your router using a protocol named “Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)”. This is quite useful as you don’t require to manually feed in the numbers inside the IPv4 setting. The only downside to this is that it might change from time to time.

Assign a Static IP Address in Windows

Should I assign a static IP address?

Most of the time, your device doesn’t require a static or unchanging IP address. However, this may change if you meet one of the conditions below –

  • To recognize your own device using an IP address: This might be a case if you or your friends want to locate your PC using its IP address. Setting a fixed IP even helps in troubleshooting network-related errors.
  • To let apps connect to your network device: If you have certain apps that can only connect to a network device only using its IP address.

There might be a few additional reasons because of which you are looking to make your IP address static. Well, whatever is the reason in your case, assigning this is not a difficult task.

Ways to Set a Static IP Address 0n Windows 11/10

If you want to assign a static IP address to your Windows 11/10 or older operating systems, go through all possible ways, and apply the one that seems applicable to your device –

  • Assign a Static IP Address via Settings (Win 11/10)
  • Use PowerShell to assign a static IP address (All versions)
  • Set a Static IP Address via CMD (Win 10 and Below)
  • Via Control Panel (Win 8.1/8/7)

1] Assign a Static IP Address via Settings (Win 11/10)

This is the easiest of all four methods discussed in this guide. All you require is to visit the Ethernet/Wireless setting page, and set a static IP address there. Here’s how to configure this setting –

  • Press Win + I to open the Settings page.
  • Select Network & Internet and head over to the right section.
  • If you are on a wired network, select Ethernet else WiFi .
  • Select the device that you are using to establish a network connection.

Assign a Static IP Address in Windows - Select WiFi Properties

  • Click the Edit button available next to IP Assignment .

Assign a Static IP Address in Windows - Edit IP Assignment

  • A pop-up window will appear next. Use the drop-down and select Manual .
  • Enable the IPv4 toggle switch and put a static IP address.
  • Fill in the other areas like Subnet prefix length to ’24’ and Gateway to ‘10.1.2.1’.
  • If you do have some preferred DNS address, use that in the respective blanks. Else, leave it blank.
  • Similarly, enter the Alternate DNS address if you have any.
  • In the end, hit Save, and restart File Explorer.

Open your default web browser and check if you can browse over the internet.

2] Use PowerShell (All versions)

If you love doing things via PowerShell/CMD the most, here’s how to assign a static IP address using PowerShell –

  • Right-click on the Windows icon and select Windows Terminal (Admin) .
  • The default interface setting on the Terminal is of the Windows PowerShell. If not, use the drop-down menu and select the same. You may also press “Ctrl+Shift+1” to start PowerShell inside Windows Terminal.
  • Copy/paste the below code and hit Enter to see your current network configuration.

Get-NetIPConfiguration

  • Running this command will display the current configuration on your device.

Assign a Static IP Address in Windows - PowerShell

  • Note down the following details from the list of the available information –

InterfaceIndex

IPv4Address

IPv4DefaultGateway

  • After you have noted down the values of the above items, run this code –

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceIndex 5 -IPAddress 192.168.202.149 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 192.168.202.15

Note : Make sure to replace the InterfaceIndex, IPAddress, and DefaultGateway values in the above code. By default, the PrefixLength (subnet mask) remains 24 for a home network. So, change it only when the same varies on your device.

  • If you want to assign a static DNS server to your network, run this code –

Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 5 -ServerAddresses 192.168.202.15

  • To add a secondary DNS server address, run the above command including an extra address separating with a comma.

Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 5 -ServerAddresses 192.168.202.15, 8.8.8.8

That’s it, your IP address and associated server addresses have become now static. Open your web browser and see if everything is working alright.

3] Set a Static IP Address via CMD (Win 10 and Below)

Command Prompt also provides a way that you can use to set a static IP address on the computer. However, this method might not work on the latest versions of Windows including Windows Server 2012.

  • Launch Command Prompt as an administrator .
  • When it opens up, type the code below and press Enter –

ipconfig /all

  • Go to the Network Adapter (Wireless/Wired), and note down the following details –

IPv4 Subnet mask Default Gateway DNS Servers

  • After you have noted down the values of the above items, run this code –

netsh interface ip set address name ="Interface Name" static IP_Address Subnet Mask Gateway

For example – netsh interface ip set address name=”Wi-Fi” static 192.168.202.149 255.255.255.0 192.168.202.15

In the example above, “Wi-Fi” is the interface name while the others are IP address, Subnet Mask, and default gateway address.

  • If you want to assign a static DNS server address to your device, execute the command below –

netsh interface ip set dns name=”Your DNS Name” static Your_DNS_Server_Address

Now that you have assigned a static IP address, DNS server to your device, open your default web browser and check if everything is working alright.

Note : Netsh command is deprecated on Windows Server 2012, Windows latest versions. Instead of using the Network Shell command, you can still use the NetTPIP networking module offered by PowerShell.

4] Via Control Panel (Win 8.1/8/7)

Though the PowerShell method will work on all older versions of Windows, if you are not comfortable with running codes, you may use the Control Panel method –

  • First of all, open Control Panel .
  • Select Network & Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
  • On the left navigation pane, hit Change adapter settings .

Network and Sharing Center Control Panel

  • Right-click on the Current Adapter (Wireless/Ethernet), and hit the option – Properties .

Network Connections

  • On the subsequent pop-up window, double-click on the option – Internet Protocol Version 4 ( TCP/IPv4 ).
  • Enable the “ Use the following IP address ” radio button, and fill in all the necessary details like – Your IP address, Subnet Mask, and default gateway.
  • Next, tick the “Use the following DNS server addresses” checkbox, and type your preferred DNS server, and the Alternate DNS server. The computer will try connecting to the alternate server in case the preferred DNS is not reaching.
  • In the end, hit OK and keep doing so on the prior opened windows as well.
  • After you close all windows, restart your PC .

Sign back into your PC and check if you can surf effectively on your default web browser.

I hope you now know how to assign a static IP address to your device.

How To Set Up a Static IP Address on Windows 11

Thumbnail image of Jason Bauer

Windows 11, like all versions of Windows, can have either a static IP address or a dynamic IP address . By default, Windows 11 has a static IP address .

windows 11 desktop

A static IP address is an IP address that does not change. This is opposed to a dynamic IP address, which can change each time your computer reboots. Configuring a static or dynamic IP address is done from within the Windows 11 control panel.

While you can configure a static IP address from within Windows 11, it is usually a better option to set up a DHCP Reservation in your router. DHCP Reservations are similar to a static IP address in that they do not change, but they are easier to manage because you can manage your entire network for a single interface.

Why Set Up a Static IP Address on Windows 11

There are many times when you may want to set up a static IP address on Windows 11.

  • If you host a game server such as Minecraft on Windows 11, then you may want to set up a port forward pointing at your computer. You should configure Windows 11 to have a static IP address before you set up a port forward.
  • In order to access your shared media files on Windows 11 from outside your network you might want a static IP address and a port forward.
  • If you plan to ssh to your Windows 11 computer it may be more reliable to have your computer's IP address never change.

How To Configure a Static IP Address on Windows 11

In order to set up a static IP address on Windows 11 you have to first find your existing IP address and gateway address. After you know that information, you can use it to configure your network adapter with very similar settings.

Find your Existing Windows 11 IP Address Settings

There are a couple of ways that you can find your existing IP address on Windows 11. The 'tried and true' method is to use the command prompt, which works for pretty much every version of Windows since the dawn of time. The newer versions of Windows such as 10 and 11 include a section in their Control Panel that lists the same information, but it is not always in the same exact location depending on your version of Windows. We'll show both methods.

Find Your Windows 11 IP Address with the Command Prompt

This is the traditional, standard, old-fashioned way of finding your system network information. It should work on any version of Windows, and the screenshots presented here are taken from Windows 11.

This is the recommended way of determining your current IP address and default gateway, because the other method does not show your current subnet mask.

Click the Windows button, or press the WinKey on your keyboard, to show the Start Menu.

Type the phrase 'cmd' and press enter.

windows 11 start menu cmd

'cmd' is short for "Command Prompt". If you do it right, you should see a new window pop up that is black with white text.

windows 11 cmd prompt

Type 'ipconfig' and press enter.

windows 11 ipconfig

Make a note of your IPv4 Address , Subnet Mask , and Default Gateway . You'll need them later.

Find Your Windows 11 IP Address with Control Panel Settings

Windows 10 and 11 can show you your IP address in one of the modern control panel windows, but it does not show your subnet mask. If you are comfortable making an assumption about your subnet mask then you can use this method for determining your current IP address.

windows 11 start menu settings

Type in the phrase 'settings' to find the Settings app.

windows 11 advanced network settings

In the 'settings' app choose Network & Internet , and then choose Advanced Network Settings .

windows 11 settings network and internet

Choose Hardware and connection properties to show your current IP address and gateway.

windows 11 network hardware and connection properties

Your current network adapter settings are shown on screen.

Hardware and connections properties and Subnet Masks The Windows 11 Hardware and connections properties * window does not show your Subnet Mask , which you are going to need later. However, if the first 3 numbers in your IPv4 address and IPv4 default gateway are then same, then you can frequently assume that your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 . This is not always the case, though, so be sure that you understand what this means. If they are different, or if you do not want to assume your subnet mask, then you must use the command prompt method for determining your IP address and default gateway.

Write down the numbers for IPv4 address and IPv4 default gateway . You will need them later.

Change Your Windows 11 Network Settings from Dynamic to Static

Now that you have your current IP address and gateway settings you can configure your network adapter to have a static IP address.

Click the Start button, or press the WinKey on your keyboard to show the Start Menu, and then start typing in the phrase 'network connections'. As soon as you see 'View network connections', you can choose that option.

windows 11 start menu network connections

Find your network adapter in the list. For many people there is only 1 network adapter listed, but there may be more than 1. Oftentimes a wired network connection will be listed as Ethernet and a wireless network connection will be listed as Wireless .

When you find your connection, right click on it to show the context menu. Choose Properties from the context menu.

windows 11 network connections popup menu

In the Properties pop-up window look for *Internet Protocol 4 (TCP/IPv4).

windows 11 network connection properties

If you do not see this in the list, then you have chosen the wrong network adapter. Go back and choose a different network adapter until you find one that has IPv4 in it. Choose Internet Protocol Version 4 and then click the Properties button. You should see a new window pop up with your network adapters current settings.

windows 11 tcp ip 4 dynamic

If your Windows 11 computer is set up to have a static IP address then the TCP/IP 4 properties window will look like this, with Obtain an IP address automatically selected, and Obtain DNS server address automatically selected.

Change the top radio button to Use the following IP address .

Enter your IP address information that you obtained above in the 3 boxes that are now available.

windows 11 tcp ip 4 static

We also recommend changing your DNS server settings to point to CloudFlare and Google at this step.

1.1.1.1 is the CloudFlare DNS server, and it is a highly-reliable and privacy focused DNS server that we highly recommend. 8.8.8.8 is the Google DNS server, which is a highly reliable DNS server that functions as a backup in case the CloudFlare DNS server is unavailable.

Click Ok to close the IPv4 Properties window and you are done.

Keep in mind that it is almost always better to set up a DHCP Reservation in your router instead of a static IP address on your computer. DHCP reservations offer the same function of giving you an IP address that never changes, but they offer the convenience of managing your network from a single location.

How to set static IP Address in Windows 11 ( Three easy ways )

When you connect to a network, your device automatically gets an IP address from the DHCP server. However, you are also able to assign an IP address to your PC manually. So stay with me till the end of the session; I will show you how to set a static IP address in Windows 11.

IP, or in a full form Internet Protocol address, is a unique identification number separated by dots or periods and is used to let the devices communicate with each other on the network.

The dynamic IP address often changes from time to time. On the other hand, the static IP address does not change until you change it manually. If you have a remote connection or set your computer as a server, the static IP address works much better than the dynamic one.

In the following article, I will assign a static IPV4 address to my PC running Windows 11 using the Settings app, Control Panel, and Command Prompt.

How to Set Static IP Address in Windows 11

By: Waseem Patwegar | December 17, 2023

While the default option in Windows 11 is to connect to internet using a dynamic IP address, it also provides the option to assign or set static IP address.

Set Static IP Address in Windows 11

Assign Static IP Address in Windows 11

As mentioned above, the default option in Windows 11 is to connect to the network using a dynamic IP address, which is assigned by the router or a combined Modem/Router unit.

Since, the IP address assigned by the router is Dynamic in nature, it changes whenever the DHCP lease expires and it can also change when the modem/router is restarted.

While most users do not find the need to change this setup, setting a static IP address on a Windows 11 computer may be required in certain cases.

For example, services like file/printer sharing and port forwarding are best setup on a static IP address, otherwise they will stop working as soon as the computer acquires a new dynamic IP address.

Hence, we are providing below the steps to assign a static IP address on a Windows 11 computer.

Step #1. – Find Router IP Address

The first step is to note down the IP address of the modem/router ( DHCP Server Address ) and also the Subnet Mask Address .

1. Type Command Prompt in Windows search bar > right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator .

Open Command Prompt As Admin

2. In Command Prompt window, type ipconfig/all and press the Enter key.

IP Config all Command

3. Once the command is executed, scroll down the list of entries to “Wi-Fi” or “Ethernet” section as required and note down Subnet Mask Address and the DHCP Server Address (Router IP Address).

Command Prompt Window

4. Close the Command Prompt window.

Step #2. Assign Static IP Address

After noting down the subnet mask and the router IP address (DHCP Server), you can follow the steps below to set static IP address on your computer.

1. Go to Settings > select Network & internet in the left-pane. In the right-pane, scroll down and click on Advanced network settings .

Open WiFi Network Properties on Windows PC

4. On the properties screen, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties .

Open IPV4 Properties

5. On IPv4 properties screen, select Use the following IP Address option > Enter Default Gateway (Router IP Address), Subnet Mask Address (As obtained in step 1), type Static IP Address and click on OK .

Change IPV4 Address on Windows PC

As you can see in above image, the first 3 number sets (192.175.0 in this case) in IP address field need to be the same as the default gateway address and you can only change the last number set with any number from 1 to 255.

How to find your ip address on windows 11.

Everybody has an internet address. Let's find out what it is.

Quick Links

Understanding external vs. internal ip address, how to find your external ip address, find your local ip address in windows settings, find your ip address using the command prompt, key takeaways.

  • To find your local IP address on Windows 11, open Settings -> Network & Internet -> Your Wi-Fi Network.
  • Under Properties, look for "IPv4 address" to find your local IP address.

Sometimes, you need to know your network IP address while using Windows 11, but it's not obvious how to see what it is. Here are two good ways to quickly find out.

Before seeking out your IP address, it's important to know which kind of IP address you're trying to find. For our purposes, there are two main types of IP address: external and internal.

Related: How to Find Your Private and Public IP Addresses

Your external IP address (also known as your "wide area network" or WAN address) is the address that you present to the outside world while using the internet. It's shared between all the devices on your local network . It's also the IP address that others would use to connect to your computer through the internet.

Your internal IP address (or LAN address) is an address assigned to you by your local router or broadband modem. Using dynamic DNS, many routers automatically assign IP addresses, such as 192.168.1.100, to devices on your local network. This address isn't seen by the outside world and is only used on your local area network (LAN) within your home, school, or business. You can also set up a static IP address on Windows or Linux .

Related: What Is A Wide Area Network (WAN)?

The easiest way to find your external (WAN) IP address is by using a web browser. To do so, open your favorite browser (such as Edge, Chrome, or Firefox) and visit the http://ifconfig.me website.

When the page loads, look under the "Your Connection" section. The number listed beside "IP Address" is your external IP address. For example, it might be something like "55.777.777.222."

You'll see your IP address in the

Your IP address will be different from the example shown above, of course.

It's safe to use this method because every website sees your IP address whenever you visit it anyway. This particular website just shows that information back to you, which can help with network troubleshooting.

You can also find your external IP address in your router's configuration utility , which is usually accessed through a web browser. To use that, you'll need to consult your particular router or modem's documentation.

To find your local IP address, you can use a few different techniques in Windows 11. One of the easiest ways to do so is by using the Settings app.

To start, first, open Windows Settings by pressing Windows+i on your keyboard. Or, you can search for "settings" in the Start menu and click its app icon. When it opens, click "Network & Internet" in the sidebar.

In Windows 11 Settings, click

In Network & Internet settings, you'll see your primary internet connection listed near the top of the window. Click "Properties" beside the network connection name.

In Network & Internet settings, click

On your network connection properties page, scroll down and locate the information section near the bottom. Beside "IPv4 Address," you'll see your local IP address in IPv4 format (such as "192.168.1.90"), and your IPv6 address will be listed just above your IPv4 address.

Locate your IP address in the

If you need to share this information with others later, click the "Copy" button beside the network information section, and it will be placed in your Windows Clipboard. You can then paste it as text somewhere else (such as in a message or email) to share it later.

You can also find your local IP address quickly in Windows 11 on the command line . One way to quickly get a command prompt is by right-clicking the Start button and selecting "Windows Terminal" from the list.

Left-click the Start menu and select

When Windows Terminal opens (with either PowerShell or Command Prompt, depending on your preferences), type

on a blank line and hit Enter. This runs Windows 11's built-in command-line network utility.

In Windows terminal, type

After running

, you'll see a list of all the network adapters that you have in your machine, including Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections.

Locate a section labeled something similar to "Ethernet adapter Ethernet" or "Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi" that has many entries listed beneath it. You'll find your local IPv4 and IPv6 address listed there under "IPv4 Address" or "Link-local IPv6 Address."

If you need to copy an IP address down, select it with your mouse and press Ctrl+c to copy it to the Clipboard. You can paste it somewhere else later to store or share it. When you're done, close the Windows Terminal window, and you're all set. Good luck!

While you're finding IP addresses, you might be interested in finding the IP address of your Windows 10 PC , iPhone , printer , Roku , Wi-Fi router , or other device . You can also figure out what is listening on a specific TCP/IP port or set up a static TCP/IP route .

How to Set Static IP Address in Windows 11 and 10: Different Methods

Set Static IP Address in Windows 11 and 10 Using Different Methods

Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique address every network-enabled device should have to be able to communicate over a network. It is a crucial component of computer networking, without which we can not imagine network communication and the internet. Your computer, mobile, tablet, and other network-enabled devices must own a valid IP address before they can connect to a network and the internet. That said, this guide discusses various methods to set a static IP address in Windows 11 and 10.

In addition to static IP address assignment, it is worth mentioning that most network infrastructures make IP address assignments automatic by using a protocol called Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Todays time, even your home router and your personal hot spot are DHCP enabled. They automatically assign a valid IP address to the devices that join the network.

The static IP address assignment comes to be crucial in a network environment where you have not configured DHCP. As a common internet user, you may not need to learn this stuff. But as an IT professional, it is a very fundamental and crucial topic you should master.

Before assigning an IP address to your computer, you need to make sure the IP address you set is available. The first section below discusses how to check the availability of an IP address. The rest of the guide covers different methods to assign a static IP address in Windows 11.

Check the Availability of an IP Address in Windows 11 and 10

When you set a new static IP address to your computer, you should make sure that the IP address is available and not used by another device in your network. This task differs based on your environment.

In an enterprise network environment, such tasks are getting done by network admins, and they do know perfectly what IPs are available. If you are trying to set a static address in a home environment, follow the steps below to make sure an IP is available, and you can use it for your computer.

Note that the IP address you check must be in the range of your network address. If your network address range is, for example, 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 , you can not set an IP out of this range for your computer.

  • Open the Command Prompt or PowerShell: To do so in Windows 11, right-click the Windows icon to open the quick access menu. Then, click Windows Terminal (Admin) to open it. By default, the Windows PowerShell session is open on Windows Terminal. You can open the Command Prompt by using the Ctrl + Shift + 2 shortcut keys on Windows Terminal. Additionally, in Windows 10, you can launch the Windows PowerShell and Command Prompt from the Start Menu.

Opening Windows Terminal as Administrator

  • On PowerShell or Command Prompt session, type ping followed by the IP address you want to check its availability and hit enter. For example: ping 10.10.10.40 . If the result returns unreachable , most probably, the IP address is available. If it returns a successful reply, the IP address is not available. So, find an unreachable IP address and move to the next step.

Check the Availability of an IP Address

  • Once you found an unreachable IP address from your network range, run arp -a command. If the IP address is in the Arp table of your network interface (Ethernet Adapter, in my case), the IP is not available. If it is not there, the IP is for sure available.

Checking the IP Address in Arp Table

So, that is how you can check the availability of an IP address in your network.

Set Static IP Address Using Network Connections Console

Using the Network Connections window is a traditional method to configure network settings, including IP Address settings in Windows. Microsoft shifts almost every configuration task to the modern Windows Settings window. However, the network connections window is still a one-stop place for network configurations. Follow the below steps to set a static IP address to your computer in Windows 11. This method works on both Windows 11 and Windows 10 with no difference.

  • Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run utility.
  • Type ncpa.cpl in the Run dialogue box and hit enter or press OK to open the network settings window.

Opening Network Connections in Windows 11 and 10

  • On the Network Connections window, right-click the network adapter (WiFi, Ethernet) for which you want to set a static IP address (Ethernet, in my case) and click Properties from the context menu.

Network Adapter Properties in Windows 11 and 10

  • Double-click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to open it, or select it and click Properties .

TCP/IPv4 Properties of a Network Adapter in Windows 11 and 10

  • On the new window, check out the Use the following IP address option. Then, put a valid IP address in the IP address field, the subnet mask in the Subnet mask field, and the default gateway address in the Default gateway field. Next, put a preferred DNS server address and, optionally, an alternate DNS server in the related fields. Finally, click OK to save your settings.

Set New Static IP Address to a Network Adapter in Windows 11 and 10

  • It takes a while until your system identifies the new IP address settings. Close the IP configuration windows, and your system will get the IP address you set if you have set a valid IP address.

So, you learned how to set a static IP address in Windows 11 using the Network Connections window.

Set a Static IP Address Using Windows Settings

Using Windows Settings is a modern approach to configuring things in Windows 11, including network settings and configuration. Microsoft adds configuration and settings capability to Windows Settings. Using Windows Settings to set a static IP address in Windows 11 is more beginner-friendly. The steps to do so are as the followings. Note that this method is available in Windows 10, maybe with slight differences in steps.

  • Go to the Start Menu and launch Settings . You can also use the Windows + I shortcut keys to open it.
  • On the Windows Settings window, select the Network & Internet option on the left pane. Then, click the Network Card (Ethernet, WiFi) for which you want to assign a static IP address. In my case, I use Ethernet. For the currently used adapter, you can click the Properties too.

Opening Ethernet Settings in Windows Settings

  • On the network adapter window, scroll down to the IP Assignment section. Then, click the Edit button associated with the IP Assignment.

Editing the IP Configurations in the Windows Settings

  • On the new window, first, select Manual from the drop-down menu. Then switch the IPv4 toggle button to on if it is off. Next, enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway in the related fields. Scroll down and enter the DNS address and, optionally, alternate DNS server address. Finally, click Save once set.

Set Static IP Address in Windows 11 Using Windows Settings

  • It takes a few seconds to set the net IP settings. If you have provided an available IP, it should continue working just fine with the new IP address. All set! Close the Windows Settings window.

That is it with this method. Pretty straightforward.

Assign Static IP Address Using Command Prompt

You can configure your network settings with the Network Shell (netsh) command. Besides other network configurations, you can set a static IP address using this command. The netsh command works on both the PowerShell and Command Prompt sessions. Using this method, the steps are as the followings.

  • Go to the Start Menu and search for Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt. Once found, right-click it and click Run as Administrator . Alternatively, in Windows 11, you can use the Windows Terminal, as discussed in the first section above.
  • On the Command Prompt or PowerShell session, first, run netsh interface show interface command. It lists the network interface names. Note the interface name for which you want to set a static IP address. In my case it is the Wi-Fi.

Listing Network Interface Using Netsh Command

  • To set a static IP, run netsh interface IP set address name= “Network Interface Name” static [IP Address] [Subnet Mask] [Gateway] . Replace the Network Interface Name with the name of your network interface, the IP Address with the new IP address you want to set, the Subnet Mask with the subnet mask of your network, and the Gateway with the default gateway address. In my example, the whole command becomes the below line. netsh interface ip set address name="Wi-Fi" static 192.168.137.20 255.255.255.0 192.168.137.1

Set Static IP Address in Windows 11 and 10 Using Command Prompt

  • You have set a static IP address. Now, you need to set your DNS address too. To set DNS, run the netsh interface IP set DNS name="Network Interface Name" static [DNS Address] As of my example, the whole command is the below line. netsh interface IP set DNS name="Wi-Fi" static 8.8.8.8

Setting DNS Address in Windows 11 and 10 Using Command Prompt

  • Now, if you run the ipconfig /all command and go to the relevant network interface card section, you will see the new IP settings you applied.

Verifying the Static IP Address Setting with Command Prompt

That is all about using the Network Shell command line utility to set a static IP address in Windows 11 and 10.

RELATED: Find Your MAC Address in Windows 11 and 10: Various Methods.

Set a Static IP Address Using PowerShell

In addition to the Network Shell command, which works on both PowerShell and Command Prompt, you can use special PowerShell command to set a static IP address in Windows 11 and 10. Walk through the steps below using this method.

  • Go to the Start Menu.
  • Search for Windows PowerShell.
  • Once found, right-click it and select Run as Administrator . Note: In Windows 11, you have Windows Terminal, which by default, the PowerShell console is selected. I discussed launching it in the first section above.
  • On the PowerShell session, firstly, run the Get-NetAdapter command. This command lists all the network adapters on your computer with some information. Also, note the Interface Index of the network adapter to which you want to set a static IP address for it.

Listing the Network Adapters with PowerShell

  • Remove all the IP address configurations of the network interface. To do so, run Remove-NetIPAddress -InterfaceIndex 6 -Confirm:$false command. Use the Interface Index number of your intended network card. In my case, it is 6.

Removing the IP Address Configurations in Windows 11 and 10

  • Now, use the Remove-NetRoute -InterfaceIndex 6 -Confirm:$false command to remove the DNS configuration of your network card.

Removing the DNS Configuration from the Network Card

  • To assign a new IP address, use the below command. New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceIndex 6 -IPAddress 192.168.137.10 -AddressFamily IPv4 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 10.10.10.1 Use the right default gateway address of your network. Also, put the right prefix length, which identifies your subnet mask.

Set a Static IP Address in Windows 11 and 10 Using PowerShell

  • After setting the IP address, you need to set the DNS Server(s) address(es). To do so, run the below command. Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 6 -ServerAddresses 8.8.4.4,8.8.8.8 Also, make sure to separate the DNS Server addresses with comma if you use multiple DNS servers.

Setting the DNS Server(s) Address(es)

  • Lastly, if you run the ipconfig /all command and see the information under the related network card, you must see the new IP address information you set for it.

Verifying the Static IP Address Settings

So, that is how you can set a static IP address to a network adapter in Windows 11 and 10 Using PowerShell.

Internet Protocol (IP) address and a key component in connecting devices to a network and the internet. Without the IP address , it is impossible to think of computer networking and internet communications. Despite the vast deployment of DHCP protocol in most infrastructures, even home networks, and mobile hot spots, you may sometimes, and in some network environments need to set a static IP address to your device, including a Windows-powered computer.

So far, this guide has started with a brief overview of the IP address. Then, it discussed how to find out if an IP address from your network IP address range is available. After that, the guide discussed different methods, such as using the Network Connections window, Windows Settings, Network Shell (netsh) command, and PowerShell to set a static IP address in Windows 11 and 10.

What Is An IP Address?

Of course, some people may not be totally clear on what an IP address actually is; no shame here! An IP address, which standards for an internet protocol address, is a device’s identifying number associated with a specific computer or network of computers. Basically, IP addresses let computers send and receive information, but they can also be used to track the physical locations of users, 4 a nightmare for those concerned with privacy. And according to our VPN usage research , that accounts for 40 percent of VPN-users.

Âť How To: Get a US IP Address

Types of IP Addresses

Not all IP addresses are created equal! Rather, they can be divided into a few different categories, some of which have certain advantages over others.

  • Public : Each and every internet-connected device has a public IP address, distributed by the Internet Service Providers vis-Ă -vis the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. What, you haven’t heard of ICANN? Nevertheless, these public IP addresses are searchable on the web, which is why we can find our printer simply by Googling its IP address .
  • Private/ local : In contrast to public IP addresses, private IP addresses aren’t searchable on the web. Rather, they’re numbers that routers assign the devices on their networks so that they can communicate with each other.
  • Dynamic : Dynamic IP addresses, as we mentioned before, are any type of IP address that change every time you connect, usually through a VPN. This makes users hard to track online, as their literal address keeps changing.
  • Static : Static means that the IP addresses do not change. With VPNs, static IP addresses are usually shared with thousands of users in order to obscure their identities. However, some websites block these shared IP addresses, which necessitates users getting dedicated IP addresses. What a convenient transition!
  • Dedicated : Dedicated IP addresses are assigned to only one user rather than being shared by several. They usually cost a different fee on top of the regular VPN subscription.
  • IPv4 : Internet Protocol version 4 is used by 99 percent of networks, but since it can only store 4.3 billion addresses, it’s being replaced by IPv6, which we’ll get to in a second. Unlike IPv6, IPv4 addresses are four one bite numbers separated by dots like 555.555.1.1.
  • IPv6 : While they’re only used by less than 1 percent of networks, IPv6 has its advantages over IPv4, namely that it can provide an infinite number of addresses. It also allows for larger payloads and is compatible with a greater number of mobile networks. Although they’re starting small, eventually, IPv6 will replace IPv4. 5

Pros and Cons of Changing Addresses

Of course, there’s always the debate of whether or not to change your IP address in the first place. While the angel on your shoulder tells you it’s a great way to increase your privacy and access other country’s servers, the devil tells you that it could be costly, that some websites won’t work and that your ISP will still be able to see your address. There’s truth to both of these sides, so we recommend making your decisions on a case-by-case basis. That being said, we broke down the main reasons why you should and shouldn’t change your IP address.

Âť How To: Get a UK IP Address

Why You Should Change Your IP Address

  • Avoid tracking : If you’ve ever searched for anything related to consumerism, then you probably already notice how your searches seem to follow you around the internet like you owe them money. This sort of tracking is made possible by cookies, which some antivirus software can disable.
  • Bypass government restrictions : Governments like China greatly restrict internet usage in their country, so if you want to bypass firewalls, changing your IP address is a must.
  • Access international servers : Maybe you simply want to see what’s on Netflix Canada from your apartment in California. By changing your IP address to a Canadian one, you can trick the streaming giant into showing you a whole lot of new content.
FYI: Not all VPNs are compatible with Netflix. To find one that’s right for you, read our review of the best VPNs for Netflix .
  • Gain privacy : Maybe you’re an activist, a journalist, or anyone else handling sensitive information, or maybe you just don’t want your Internet Service Provider to track your every move. If that’s the case, changing your IP address is a step in the right direction in terms of privacy.
  • Increase security : Most people think nothing of joining public Wi-Fi networks (and depending on your settings, this may even happen automatically). However, using public Wi-Fi opens up a slew of security risks, with hacking at the forefront. But by hiding your real IP address, you greatly lower your risk of hackings .

Why You Shouldn’t Change Your IP Address

  • Some websites won’t work : Some websites, like the aforementioned Netflix, won’t work with certain VPNs or proxies. So while they may be able to bypass government restrictions, that doesn’t stop individual websites from blocking certain IP addresses.
  • Not always legal : Depending on where you are, VPNs may not be legal ; they’re banned in China, Belarus, Iran and a few other countries, so keep that in mind before you connect.
  • May slow down connection : Any added encryption will slow down your browsing speeds, although the exact slowdowns will differ from service to service. Still, if you’re performing tasks that require a lot of bandwidth like streaming video or video chatting, you might experience some frustrating lag.
  • VPN may log data : Again, depending on the service, your VPN company may be logging the very information you want to hide, like your IP address and web traffic. Our advice? Always read the VPN’s privacy policy, which we cover in our individual VPN reviews, and talk about it extensively on our best no-logging VPNs page.
  • Could cost money : Not all VPNs are free (except of course, the ones that are; check out the best free VPNs to see what we’re talking about). Still, free VPNs typically have limits on time, data, or servers, so if you want full coverage, you might have to pony up some dough.
  • ISP’s will still be able to see IP : Even with a new IP address, your Internet Service Provider will be able to see it, so you’re never truly “private” when you’re online.
