Why Teach a Preschool Christmas Theme?

Teaching a Christmas theme in preschool isn’t for everyone.

To begin with, consider what your school policies are. If you’re teaching in a school that chooses not to focus on holidays, the consider teaching a winter theme or a gingerbread theme instead.

Next, you need to consider if your students celebrate Christmas. If not, why not base a theme off of their celebrations instead!

Or why not look into winter holidays around the world? Then you can share a few Christmas activities amid that theme.

What it boils down to is your school’s mandates, your students, and your own preferences.

If your students and their families do indeed celebrate Christmas, then a Christmas theme would be fun to plan! The kids are already excited about and many have their own family traditions to reference as background knowledge.

PRESCHOOL CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES: LITERACY

Christmas books for preschool

Choosing books is one of my favorite things to do with each new unit. Check out our favorite Christmas books here !

Christmas phonological awareness games for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Phonological awareness skills  are the key building block to reading success, which is why they should be practiced a little bit every day. In order to keep things fresh & engaging, I like to use phonological awareness games that go along with my current theme.  Click here to check out these Christmas phonological awareness games  that will help your little ones become strong readers in less than 10 minutes a day (and with zero supplies!)

Christmas vocabulary words for preschool

You’re definitely going to want to start your Christmas unit with these Christmas vocabulary cards! They are the perfect way to introduce your little learners to the vocabulary that goes along with this season. You can use these words in your writing center, as a Write the Room activity, or as a picture match.

Gingerbread house vowel sort for preschool

Focusing on the medial sound in CVC words helps our little learners develop phonemic awareness & sets the foundation for reading. This vowel-matching activity is great because it comes with two levels of cards…picture cards for our youngest learners who are just practicing sounds, and word cards for our more advanced learners who are ready to read CVC words on their own.

Alphabet bingo for preschool

Who doesn’t love Bingo?! It’s a classic game for a reason! This game comes with two Bingo cards so you can play against your little one. You can modify this game to work on different skills…call out letter names or sounds, or call out three sounds that make up a CVC word and have them find all three at once!

Christmas tracing pages for preschool

Before you head straight into writing letters with your preschooler, make sure you’re giving them opportunities to trace and create different kinds of lines. Not only will this help develop their fine motor skills, but it’ll also give them practice with going from left to right while writing as well as how to hold a pencil correctly .

FREE Dear Santa printable

Are you writing letters to Santa this year? Here’s a great FREEBIE for you! This download comes with five different Christmas pictures (plus two types of writing lines for each) so your preschooler can choose which one they like best & create a personalized letter to Santa!

FREE Christmas light letters

These FREE Christmas light letters can be used in so many ways! Some fun ideas include: using them to spell simple CVC words; using them in a salt or sand tray to practice letter formation; using play dough to form each letter; gluing them onto a Christmas tree to spell your preschooler’s name; using them to match uppercase & lowercase letters; using them for color sorting.

Preschoolers working together to put letters in ABC order

In my class, I had my students match the Christmas light letters to a clothespin with a letter on it. Then I had them put the letters in order from A-Z on a string on the wall, which was so much fun & a great cooperative learning activity. It also worked their fine motor skills (opening and closing the clothespins is great for developing those small muscles). They had a blast!

Free Christmas tree play dough mats

I love having my preschoolers use play dough to build up the muscles in their hands as a precursor to writing. These FREE play dough mats are so much fun because students will roll the cube, name the emotion, and then create that emotion out of play dough on their Christmas tree. They can also write or build the emotion word on their mat.

Preschoolers writing in sand tray using free gingerbread house letters

Salt trays are a wonderful multi-sensory activity to practice letter formation in a hands-on & tactile way (and they’re way more fun than pencil and paper!) We used these FREE gingerbread letters in our salt tray & my kids had a great time!

FREE Gingerbread Letter Match for Christmas for Preschool

These FREE gingerbread letters are also great for a letter matching activity! I added the lowercase gingerbread letters to a sensory bin of dyed corn (see the directions for dyeing corn later on in this post!) Then I had my little guy match them to the uppercase gingerbread houses.

Preschoolers singing Santa song to the tune of BINGO

This was a fun whole-class activity from Play to Learn Preschool that my kids loved! We sang the song “BINGO” but replaced the letters with “SANTA.” Each time we took a letter away, we said “HO,” so by the end of the song, we were singing, “HO HO HO HO HO” which was so funny! You can read more about it and download the free Santa cards here .

PRESCHOOL CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES: MATH

Christmas lights number order activity for preschool

Similar to the Christmas light letters, this activity uses Christmas light numbers. Again, there are so many ways to use these numbers…you can have your little ones put them in numerical order, count out the correct number of pom poms for each one, use them for color sorting, or use them to practice greater than/less than.

Reindeer pattern math activity for preschool

These reindeer patterns are the perfect way to build foundational mathematical thinking skills for our preschoolers. We want our little ones to start seeing patterns everywhere, and activities like this help develop those skills. This activity asks students to duplicate, extend, and create their own patterns using the reindeer cards.

Candy cane counting math activity for preschool

Did you know Santa loves eating candy canes?! It’s true! In this activity, our little ones are going to give Santa jars of candy canes, but they first have to count the candy canes and fill in the ten frame correctly. They can also write the number in the box to practice number formation fluency.

Christmas tree 2D shape printable

“O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, you stand in splendid beauty!” This Christmas tree activity has our preschoolers practicing 2D shapes in a fun & hands-on way. Have them spin the spinner , name the shape, and then find the matching shape on the Christmas tree. If they cover up the matching shape with a pom pom , it’ll look like ornaments decorating the tree!

Gingerbread size order free printable

Size order activities help our little ones with visual discrimination, which helps them with reading letters later on. For example, being able to visually discriminate a b from a d is crucial for reading success! These FREE gingerbread size order cards give our little ones the chance to practice this skill in a festive way!

Christmas countdown numbers

Each year, we create our own Christmas Countdown to mark the days until Christmas. My daughter and I brainstorm different holiday activities we can do each day (like drinking hot chocolate, looking at Christmas lights in the neighborhood, or donating toys) and then we pull one idea out per day. It’s a great way to build excitement for the season and practice counting skills.

Christmas countdown made out of stockings and mittens

I couldn’t find the exact same Christmas Countdown that you see in the picture (I bought this from Amazon years ago), but here is a similar one for you to check out!

PRESCHOOL CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES: SENSORY, SNACKS, & HANDS-ON IDEAS

Sensory bin with red and green rice

We always add a sensory bin to our preschool units, and this red & green rice sensory bin was perfect for Christmas! I just dyed two batches of rice (one red, one green) and added them to our bins. Then I added in jingle bells, shatter-proof ornaments, mini erasers, and any other Christmas trinkets I could find (plus a few scoopers!) and let my kiddos explore freely. ( The steps for dyeing rice can be found in this post! )

Red and Green Christmas Corn for Sensory Play

I have never tried dyeing corn kernels before, but I saw this post from Fun-a-Day and I knew I had to try it! These red & green corn kernels turned out great & are so Christmasy! You can check out her blog post for all the details!

Christmas Cornflake Wreath snacks

My mom has made these Cornflake Wreaths every Christmas for as long as I can remember, and she learned the recipe from her mom. They’re a family favorite! These wreaths are similar to Rice Krispies treats, only they’re made with cornflakes. You can get your preschoolers involved with this by having them help you pour, mix, scoop, and add the red candies.

Christmas Fine Motor Tear Wreaths for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten

Another type of wreath you can make with your little ones is a fine motor tear wreath. For this activity, simply cut out the center of a paper plate . Then have your little ones tear red and green paper into small pieces (this is great for fine motor development ) and glue them onto the paper plate. Last, you’ll hole punch the top, add a ribbon, and finish it off with a bow. It’s the perfect holiday decoration!

Christmas Gumdrop Tree

Have you ever heard of a gumdrop tree? I find that most people haven’t, but it’s been a tradition in my husband’s family forever! He loves to make one with our kids each year, which is not only fun but great fine motor practice!

Christmas tree ice cream cones for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten

I remember making this treat as a kid, and it’s still just as magical for my own kids! You take an ice-cream cone , flip it upside down, and add green frosting to make it look like a Christmas tree. Then add “ornaments” ( sprinkles and marshmallows ). This is the perfect holiday snacktivity!

Reindeer Graham cracker snack for kids

How adorable are these reindeer? When I saw this idea from Fun-A-Day , I knew we had to try them! All you need are graham crackers, pretzels, m&ms, and peanut butter or frosting (we made some of each!) My kids both LOVED this snack!

Reindeer pudding cup for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten

Another adorable reindeer snack is this Reindeer Pudding Cup! These would make a great snack for a preschool or kindergarten holiday party! You just add goggly eyes , a red pom pom , and pipe cleaners for antlers, and you’ve transformed a boring pudding cup into a festive snack!

Looking for more Christmas-themed snacks? Check out this post!

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer book for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten

Want to start a special Christmas Eve tradition? Try this! Read Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and then make Reindeer Food! All you do is combine oats and sprinkles into a plastic baggie. You can attach a “Reindeer Food” printable (there are lots of free ones if you search Google), and then sprinkle it in your front yard on Christmas Eve. It’s a great treat for the reindeer who work hard all night long to pull Santa’s sleigh!

Christmas cookie decorating for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten

And who can forget the most festive Christmas activity of all…decorating Christmas cookies?! My students LOVED decorating cookies and getting the chance to explore, create, and make a mess! Special thanks to my mom & dad for setting this up for my class!

OLD TOYS FOR SANTA

I have one more idea to share for families who want to teach their preschoolers about giving during this holiday season. Every year, my family and I gather up a group of toys for our elf on the shelf, Snowflake, to take back the North Pole. These toys are donated to other good girls and boys, which teaches my kids to think of others during this season. It also helps us declutter before the next group of toys comes in! This is one of our favorite traditions and something we look forward to each year.

To make the slime, just mix equal parts liquid starch and white glue (and glitter).  If it’s sticking to your fingers, add a bit more liquid starch.  If you see excess liquid starch that won’t mix in, just add a bit more glue.  Store the slime in a plastic container. I turned it green with liquid watercolor and grabbed this shaped glitter from the Target dollar spot.

12 Christmas Activities for Preschoolers

Get your little one into the holiday spirit with these fun crafts and games

The weeks leading up to Christmas are a busy time for families. From baking to shopping to wrapping, it can seem like every minute is filled with something holiday-related. To increase your holiday fun, be sure to include your preschooler in Christmas activities. Not only will they feel like they're part of the action, but it will also build excitement and enthusiasm as December 25 approaches.

Bake Christmas Cookies

Inviting your little one to join you in the kitchen accomplishes many things. First off, you get some special bonding time with your preschooler. Second, cooking teaches kids many important life skills including measuring, following directions, creativity, and more. Finally, when the fun is done, you get to nosh on some delicious treats!

Find the True Meaning of Christmas

It's easy to forget the reason for the season amid all the hubbub that December brings. And for a small child, let's face it, the main focus is going to be on the presents. Explain to your child how the holiday originated and why it is so special to your family.

Depending on your child's age, you can start off with simple stories about the birth of Jesus and the three Wise Men. If you attend church services, take some time to discuss the different parts of the ceremony. If you aren't sure where to start, your church leaders or fellow church-going families might have some insight to share.

If you aren't a religious family, Christmas still provides a great opportunity to discuss the topics of family, community, charity, gratitude, and tradition.

Make a Gingerbread House

Embrace the sweetness of the Christmas season by making or decorating a classic gingerbread house. There are lots of pre-made kits you can buy, or if you feel particularly crafty, make your own from scratch. Involve your preschooler in the process by bringing them along to the grocery store to shop for supplies.

Sing Christmas Carols

Imgorthand / E+ / Getty Images

Grab some friends and family and warm up your vocal cords. December is Christmas caroling time—a fun activity for all ages. Enjoy Christmas singing together at home, outside around your neighborhood, or at a local nursing home or hospital.

To make sure the experience goes smoothly, plan out your route and song list ahead of time. Explain to your preschooler what is going to happen and go over some basic safety and behavioral rules .

String Popcorn for the Christmas Tree

If you are looking for a way to give your Christmas tree a special, "homespun" look, then try adding strands of popcorn garland. Although your preschooler should avoid handling the needle (probably a job better for kids ages 5 and up), they can help by pushing the pin through the corn and pulling it through. They can also hand you the corn (and if you choose, berries) and put the finished strings on the tree when it's finished.

Make Christmas Cards

The tedious task of writing, addressing, and mailing Christmas cards is more fun with your preschooler. Make a list of who they'd like to include on your mailing list, including family, friends, and neighbors.

The cards can look any way you like, from simple crayon creations to more elaborate designs with cut paper, glitter, and stickers. When you are finished, consider delivering close greetings in person. Make a trip out of taking the rest to the post office.

Decorate Christmas Ornaments

Give your tree some childlike flair with personalized decorations courtesy of your preschooler. You can buy Christmas balls to decorate with markers or tempera paint. You can also make your own ornaments. No matter what you decide, be sure to date the ornaments so you can look back on them every year.

Design Paper Bag Puppets

Paper bag puppets are fun any time of year. At Christmastime, have your preschooler make puppets inspired by the holiday. From Santa Claus himself, to elves, to each and every reindeer, Christmas is filled with plenty of characters you can include.

Keep supplies like glue, pom-pom balls, googly eyes, glitter, yarn, pipe cleaners, and stickers on hand so your characters can be varied and unique. After you finish the puppets, let your child stage a holiday puppet show for family and friends.

Cut Your Own Snowflakes

Decorate your house and windows while your little one practices their scissor skills by creating paper snowflakes. While there is a slight learning curve in the beginning, both you and your preschooler can experiment with the shape and size by changing the way you fold the paper and how you cut it. Make a bunch of snowflakes and hang them on the windows for a shovel-free blizzard.

Bring Out Your "Elf on the Shelf"

There are dozens of ways to pose "Elf on the Shelf" for your preschooler. Wake up each morning to a new surprise. From easy to more complicated, there's no shortage of poses you'll love. Make "Elf on the Shelf" an annual family tradition.

Use Christmas-Colored Playdough

When your little one needs some downtime, set them up with some homemade playdough dyed green and red. Encourage your child to make familiar Christmas-related shapes, such as a tree, cookies, stars, Santa, and more. Take photos of their creations, or let them air dry and display their Christmas sculptures throughout the season.

Look for playdough recipes that are safe and OK to let dry.

Enjoy Christmas Crafts

There are loads of Christmas crafts for preschoolers to enjoy. Look for ideas that are specially designed for little ones. Using materials that you already have at home will keep Christmas crafts as a low-cost activity. Use the finished projects to decorate your home or give as gifts!

These Christmas activities for preschoolers are wonderful, easy, and fun ways to practice ABCs and 123s with your wee ones.

Alphabet Christmas Activities

One of our personal favourite Christmas activities for preschoolers (my current favourite preschooler, in fact) is this simple Christmas Name Puzzle . It is a fun way for your little one to practice their name letters, numbers, or even sight words!

Such a great idea! This name puzzle is perfect for Christmas and it works on scissor skills too.

My Sammy loves playing matching games, so we made this simple Matching Letters Christmas Tree Game to practice some alphabet letters he finds tricky. Matching games could be used to practice any skill: colours, shapes, or upper and lower case letters.

a fun and simple Christmas alphabet game for kids!

A little bit more preparation (though this would make a fun craft for preschoolers!), but this Christmas activity is full of learning! This Mr. Reindeer  by Playing with Words 365 makes practicing letters and numbers lots of fun! It reminds me of our  Letter Monster —which my wee ones adored!

Christmas activities for preschoolers with learning games

This invitation to write was always the most popular in my Kindergarten class! I just love this Christmas Card Writing Station  set up by Teach Preschool . It is such a meaningful way to encourage preschoolers to write!

Christmas activities for preschoolers to learn from

I absolutely love this pre-writing activity by Rainy Day Mom . This is such a great way to get preschoolers excited about writing and media literacy, too! Writing a Letter to Santa using magazine cut-outs! Some preschoolers could add in letters or words that they know as well.

Counting Christmas Activities for Preschoolers

There are some great Christmas activities for preschoolers that practice counting.  This Christmas Tree Decorating Counting Game (link no longer available) by Kids Matter is one of my favourites because it also practices one-to-one correspondence—which is a tricky skill! One-to-one correspondence means you count one ‘thing’ with one number.

Christmas activities for preschoolers with learning games

This Reindeer Counting Game by An Idea on Tuesday is not only a cute craft—it is also full of math and fine motor skills! All lists of Christmas activities for preschoolers must include a Rudolph!

Christmas activities for preschoolers with learning games

This Christmas Tree Decorating Activity (link no loner available) by Rock-a-Bye Butterfly is another great counting activity. Preschoolers could also do patterning and ordering with these trees.

50 Easy Christmas crafts for preschoolers age 3, 4, 5 years old

  • Last Updated: October 26, 2020

By Sarah Peerless

Looking for fun, simple Christmas crafts for preschoolers to do? Maybe a cute and festive keepsake craft or an ornament for the Christmas tree?  Or just anything Christmassy and crafty for your 3, 4 or even 5-year-old?

You’ve come to the right place.

Now, because crafting with little ones can often be…mmm, how to describe it…

Challenging?  Chaotic? Messy?

All of the above?

The keeping-it-simple part is essential. It’s Christmas.  You don’t want to add to the stress.

These are FUN & SIMPELE preschool Christmas crafts

Hopefully, in this list of Christmas crafts for little ones 3 to 5 years old, aka “preschoolers”, you’ll find plenty of easy stress-free and FUN things to do.

When I say “fun” I’m thinking of you… Your preschooler is pre-programmed to have fun no matter what the task – which is why crafting can get so out of hand!

In my mind, a “fun” craft is one that:

  • keeps my preschoolers (aged 3 and 4 right now) busy and entertained
  • is fairly straightforward to set-up and prep
  • isn’t conducive to a huuuuuuuge cleanup!

And before getting into the meat of this post, I’ll share a few things I’ve learnt along the way while doing crafts and activities with toddlers and preschoolers.

But, but, but… there some super cute preschooler Christmas crafts out there which are almost impossible to resist, despite their trickier nature and the potential for more mess.

So this list of Christmas crafts for preschoolers, is separated firstly by type of craft (Christmas cards, ornaments and other crafts) and then also by difficulty/mess potential:

SIMPLER, MINIMAL MESS Christmas crafts for preschoolers

Simple to prep and shouldn’t get too out of hand when it comes to mess and clean up.

TRICKIER, POTENTIALLY STICKIER ones

A bit harder to prep, finish off or much bigger mess potential So let’s get to it – loads of simple Christmas crafts for preschoolers plus some trickier, stickier and messier ones.  Pick, chose, enjoy! Merry Christmas.

If you have a 2-year-old or are just looking for even more Christmas craft ideas for your preschooler, check out out these cute Christmas crafts for toddlers .

Table of Contents

Tips for doing Christmas crafts with preschoolers (or any craft for that matter)

1 – pick crafts based on your time frame (and sanity).

Simple wins every time, as I’ve already alluded to.  This is ESPECIALLY true when you’re short on time or sanity…so  KEEP IT SIMPLE !

Or try a stress-free, non crafty minimal mess activity instead. Or get those wiggles out with some gross motor activities . Or put some tunes on and try some musical games.

2 – The process of creation is more important, than the end result

It’s nice if the craft is worth keeping at the end of it all, but to a preschooler they’re just having fun, exploring, creating and experimenting…

From a learning and development point of view, the process is much more important than the finished article.  Just knowing that has really helped me sit back and not be too directive.

I’m now happy if only 10% of our arts and crafts are fridge-worthy!

3 – Prep beforehand if you can and out of sight if necessary

It’s not just preschoolers that can’t help but touch, pick up and start to play with anything new and different in sight…. Prepping ahead of time and out of sight really helps.

4 – Make the craft alongside your preschooler

This helps them to see what it is they’re trying to achieve. Of course, they may well have zero intention of achieving the same thing as you, but, as per #2 above, that’s ok.

Crafting together is also a nice way to spend time together.  My son loves to “build” with me and make all sorts of odd-looking buildings, trucks and other random vehicles out of toilet rolls, egg boxes, juice cartons and so on.

While my daughter loves to sit down and paint and scribble with me.  We often just do said craft together – I will glue and she will stick.

Preschooler Christmas crafts: Christmas cards & ‘”artwork”

As long as your preschooler’s creations, aka “artwork” is not enormous, you can cut it out and stick on a card or just start with the card.  Or take one of these card ideas as a starting point for your little one to get creative. So these two Christmas crafts for preschoolers are grouped together.

For supplies and materials for these festive crafts check out our recommended product list.

SIMPLER, MINIMAL MESS ones

Cute and easy, these christmas card crafts for preschoolers will be great to hand out to little friends during the festive season.

Rudolph card Christmas crafts for preschoolers

#1 Rudolf faces Christmas card

These Christmas cards definitely need the abstract handiwork of a preschooler or slightly older kid to produce something as cute as the ones above.  They’d be easy to do on a large scale and you could simplify further by using a large round hole-punch for the eyes and nose.

Snowman card Christmas crafts for kids

#2 Simple snowman card or craft

These snowmen cards are easy enough for littler ones.  I did most of the cutting for my toddler and preschooler last year and they did all the sticking. They turned out rather cute, if I do say so myself!

Thumbprint preschool Christmas crafts

#3 Thumbprint Christmas lights card

Fingerpainting is such fun for little ones and by preschooler age should be fairtly containable.  It’s a great sensory activity and good for fine motor control too.

So why not try this simple Christmas craft card for preschoolers with a string of finger print twinkly lights?

At 3 and 4, my two aren’t at the writing stage yet so I’ll be helping with any text.  No doubt I’ll have it dictated it to me by my eldest!

Cupcake liner snowflake Christmas crafts for preschoolers

#4 Cupcake liner snowflake craft

Classic fold and cut snowflake art, but for this one you use a cupcake liner.  Perfect for a preschooler with good scissor control and bound to delight when the snowflake is revealed at the end.  A sprinkle of glitter and it’s ready to be stuck onto the front of a Christmas card.

robin breast Christmas crafts for preschoolers

#5 Thumbprint robin breast Christmas cards

I love the clean and fresh look of these simple robin cards.  While little ones are probably only able to help with the red thumbprint, older preschoolers or first-graders could have a go at the drawing part too.

snowmen card Christmas crafts for preschoolers

#6 Button and washi tape snowmen cards

These snowmen cards mainly require a bit of cutting and sticking which will be right up my two preschooler’s street.  A simple scribble mouth completes this easy Christmas craft for preschoolers.

These preschool Christmas card crafts are just as cute but may be a little trickier or stickier!

handprint snowmen Christmas crafts for preschoolers

#7 Snowmen handprint Christmas craft or card

This Christmas craft for preschoolers is a bit more challenging, perfect for budding little artists. They’ll love drawing their snowmen faces and clothing onto their white handprint artwork.

Make sure you have some non-toxic paint to hand, like this Crayola tempera paint.

Marbled Christmas card craft for preschoolers

#8 Marbled Christmas card

Paper marbling is not for tiny tots of 1 and 2 – trust me, I’ve tried.  Let’s just say there was more shaving foam paint over my 2-year-old than on the paper.  But now at 3 and 4 I reckon I’m willing to give this a go again.  A fun Christmas craft for preschoolers? Watch this space, but I reckon so!

Snowman Christmas crafts for preschoolers

#9 Puffy paint snowman snowglobe card

This puffy paint Christmas craft is a good test of fine motor for a preschooler and even an older child and aren’t these ones turn just so cute?

Painted noodle Christmas crafts for preschoolers

#10 Painted noodle Christmas craft

A list of Christmas crafts for preschoolers wouldn’t be complete without some dried painted pasta would it?  Young kids will definitely have fun painting and then designing their colorful Christmas trees with this one.

Hand & footprint Rudolf preschool Christmas crafts

#11 Hand & footprint Rudolf card or craft

Brown paint and a preschooler (who can restrain themselves from smooshing their painted hand or foot all over the paper for a few seconds) is all you need for this one.

How hard can that be?!  Luckily I’ve found with my two that by age 3 and 4 that hand and footprint crafts come a lot easier.

Check out these handprint birthday card ideas for someone special.

Mom of 4 kids, baby sleep expert plus home organisation and kids activities and crafts

Hi, I'm Sarah

Mom of four outrageously gorgeous Littles.  Yup, four!  The twins are now two and that title still brings me out in a cold sweat… Yet I’m just as determined to give them the best without losing my mind.  I reckon it’s possible!  Most days.

I love a challenge and have to find out they ‘why’, ‘what’ or ‘how to’  –  there are rather a lot of these when it comes to kids…

I also love, love, love things to be neat and tidy and just so.   The Littles normally have other ideas!

How Holiday Crafts Benefit Child Development

You may notice that holiday crafting has a calming effect on your child. While FUN is one of our main objectives, we like to ensure that our activities also have a meaningful purpose. Here are some benefits of holiday crafts:

  • Enhances fine motor skills : Coloring, cutting, twisting, glue-ing, and other tasks are frequently included in crafts, which help kids develop their fine motor skills.
  • Encourages visual-processing skills : Crafting helps with pattern identification, sequence detection, and spatial rotation—all of which are necessary for reading and math.
  • Promotes fun and bonding : Art projects are a hit with kids of all ages, and crafting gives kids and adults a unique, creative way to connect. This one is a personal experience for me. Even if organizing a craft project looks like a lot of work initially, know that the results are well worth the effort.
  • Challenges executive function skills: Executive function is critical in helping children acquire planned behavior. Crafting enhances working memory and concentration. These two qualities are vital in the classroom and daily life.
  • Encourages imagination and creativity: Children can be imaginative and creative when they work on crafts. They can then use it in other recreational and academic tasks.

Discover the 12 Best Christmas Literacy Activities for Preschoolers

As we get closer to the winter months, Christmas is filling the air—and our classrooms! Each year, teachers and parents alike find ways to incorporate the holiday season into learning activities for their students and children.

Discover the 12 Best Christmas Literacy Activities for Preschoolers

Especially over the past couple years, I’ve had to get creative with the activities I’ve planned for my classroom and figure out which activities work better for online vs. in-person learning. I am sure other teachers and parents need inspiration for some festive activities as well, so I decided to compile this information as a resource for those who want to get their kids reading and writing.

During my time working with preschool aged children, I found that holidays were great motivation for getting kids excited to learn. My students were always excited to be doing a holiday related activity or game, and I noticed a lot of improvement in the skills we were practicing during this time.

If you’ve been looking for fun Christmas activities you can do with your preschoolers to practice their literacy skills, you’re in the right place! After reading this article, you will know all about:

  • The reasons why celebrating Christmas at preschool is beneficial
  • Literacy skills your preschoolers should be developing
  • Christmas literacy activities you can do with preschoolers, both online and in person

3 Reasons Why You Should Celebrate Christmas at Preschool

Before we get into examples of some great Christmas literacy activities for preschoolers, let’s talk about the reasons why you should celebrate Christmas at preschool. There are a lot of great reasons you should talk about and celebrate this festive day during school, including:

1. Learning about Culture and Customs

The holidays can be a great opportunity to teach your children about culture and customs, which allows them to have a little more insight into how the world works and how different groups of people celebrate.

Children will be happy to learn about Christmas all over the world

2. Christmas Gets Kids Excited

If you’ve been looking for more engagement in your classroom, Christmas is the perfect time to get students excited to learn. For many preschoolers, Christmas-related activities and Santa are a big deal, and they’ll jump at the chance to engage with festive classroom content.

Christmas gives us faith in miracles

3. Teaching the True Meaning of Christmas

In addition to using the festive season to encourage growth in skills like literacy, Christmas can be a great opportunity to talk with your students or children about character traits and the spirit of giving . The earlier children are able to put the holiday and perspective and understand that it’s not just about Santa and receiving presents, the better!

The main thing is not gifts, but the love that we give to each other

3 Literacy Skills that Preschoolers Should Have

Before you decide which activities you want to do with your preschoolers around Christmas time, it’s important to take into account which literacy skills preschoolers should have.

  • One of the most important skills preschoolers should have is letter recognition and alphabetic code . This includes knowledge of the alphabet and the foundations of spelling, as well as the ability to recognize sounds in words.
  • Another thing your preschoolers should be developing is their vocabulary, as students in crucial preschool years learn a lot of new words by reading and being read to. This is one of the major building blocks for literacy and will help students later when they are learning how to read and write on their own.
  • One last literacy skill preschoolers should have is recognition of pictures and objects . When a child sees a picture or object, it’s great to practice using words and phrases to talk about them.

12 Preschool Christmas Activities

Now that we’ve gone over the reasons why preschoolers should celebrate Christmas and the main areas of literacy to focus on for this age group, let’s take a look at these twelve Christmas literacy activities for preschoolers.

Classroom Activities

  • Reindeer Alphabet Bingo →
  • Christmas Story Sequencing →
  • Christmas Vowel Practice →
  • Letters and Pictures →
  • Christmas Color by Letters →

Online Activities

  • Five Little Gingerbread Men Song →
  • Queen of Christmas List Activity →
  • Christmas Vocabulary Flashcards →
  • Christmas Scene Listening Comprehension →
  • Christmas Handwriting Practice →
  • Fill in the Blank Gift Giving Sentences →

I know it can be hard to stay creative year after year, but there are some ideas on this list I know parents and teacher alike will love!

These first six Christmas activities are designed for in-person learning in the classroom, which is a crucial part of childhood literacy development.

1. Reindeer Alphabet Bingo

One fantastic activity you can bring to your preschool classroom is reindeer alphabet bingo . This activity consists of printing Christmas-themed bingo sheets with different letters of the alphabet and having students place red and green candies or tokens on letters called out. The first student to get five letters in a row can call out “reindeer!” to win the game.

Great activity for the youngest

Best for: letter recognition and learning the alphabet

2. Christmas Story Sequencing

Another activity you can do with preschoolers is have them sort pictures of the main events of the story of Christmas. To do this, have the students look at pictures showing the main events from the story and put them in the correct order. For preschool aged children, the goal should be to sequence three pictures to tell a story .

In a playful way, tell the children about the origins of this holiday

Best for: recognition of pictures and sequencing events

3. Santa and Present Directions

The next activity you can do is to have the children practice using words that signify direction using pictures of Santa and a present. On your whiteboard or bulletin board, place a photo of Santa and a present in various positions while your class decides which phrases best describe their positioning. Is the present above, behind, or below Santa? Have fun with it and enjoy!

Santa will help us get new knowledge of literacy!

Best for: developing vocabulary

4. Christmas Vowel Practice

For this activity, your preschoolers get a chance to practice recognizing and pronouncing vowels found in Christmas words! To do this one, print out and laminate sheets with Christmas-themed words and graphics and highlighted vowels. Have your students practice reading and pronouncing the vowels in each word on the sheet to keep them in Christmas spirits.

Best for: letter recognition and alphabetic code

5. Letters and Pictures

It is always a good thing to have a board with letters and related pictures up in your preschool classroom as it helps children associate letters with sounds. For the Christmas season, you can change up the pictures to be festive and holiday related! For example, ‘R’ could be for ‘Reindeer’ and ‘E’ could be for ‘Elf’! Sit back and watch your students become engaged with your new festive classroom graphics!

Best for: letter recognition and picture recognition

6. Christmas Color by Letters

Our last Christmas literacy activity for preschoolers in an in-person classroom is a Christmas color by letters . Give each of your students a coloring sheet with a Christmas-related picture or scene and small letters in each of the white spaces where the colors should go. On your whiteboard, write a ‘key’ telling students which letters correspond to what colors.

Combine the fun with the useful

Best for: letter recognition and following instructions

These next activities are for online learning, so your preschoolers can get into the holiday spirit and develop literacy skills no matter where in the world they may be!

7. Five Little Gingerbread Men Song

One great activity to do with your students online is to sing songs. It’s easy to put the words on the screen and play a song in an online classroom, making virtual circle time that much more fun! This song is a fun Christmas-themed tale that helps children practice singing words aloud and practice counting, but any Christmas-themed song would be a lovely addition to the class.

Who doesn't love to sing?

Best for: letter recognition and counting

This is also a great activity to record for students to watch at a later time. Check out this article to find the best equipment for recording lectures!

8. Queen of Christmas List Activity

Another great online activity is reading a Christmas story and doing a related activity. For this one, the children’s Christmas book Queen of Christmas is a great choice, as it has some new vocabulary and introduces the concept of a Christmas list. After reading the story, have your students write their own lengthy Christmas lists and put one item for each letter of the alphabet. It’s great to watch how engaged your students can become when thinking of items that correspond to each letter!

You can also give this book for home reading

Best for: alphabetic code and spelling

9. Christmas Vocabulary Flashcards

Christmas is a great opportunity to introduce new vocabulary words to your students, which you can either do in person or with online flashcards. Use a variety of Christmas-related words like ‘Santa’ and ‘sleigh’ and have your preschoolers practice sounding them out and using them in sentences.

10. Christmas Scene Listening Comprehension

Another great literacy activity that you can do in an online classroom is Christmas scene listening comprehension, which is where your students will listen to instructions to know how to color in a picture. Take a coloring book picture of a Christmas scene and make your preschoolers listen to which color should go in each part of the picture.

Best for: listening comprehension and vocabulary

11. Christmas Handwriting Practice

Another great way to engage your students in some Christmas cheer is to give them some Christmas-related words in their handwriting practice sheets! Kids get really excited about the holidays and it’ll be great practice for their handwriting if you get them writing words like ‘cookie’ or ‘Santa’ on a practice sheet. You can even have students draw or color in a picture related to the words on the side or back of the vocabulary practice!

Learning handwriting is more fun at Christmas time

Best for: handwriting practice and vocabulary

12. Fill in the Blank Gift Giving Sentences

The last Christmas literacy activity we have for online learning is fill in the blank sentences about gift giving. In this activity, you can help your students think of meaningful gifts to give their family and loved ones for Christmas. Give your students a sheet to print out that says “I can give ___ a ___ for Christmas” five times. Then, have your students fill in the person and gift they plan to give their relative for Christmas!

A great reason to remember your loved ones

Best for: spelling, vocabulary, and constructing sentences

Easily one of our favorite toddler Christmas crafts for the festive season!

Giant Gingerbread Man

5. Giant gingerbread man

You’ll need a big piece of card or paper for this holiday craft for preschoolers!

Have your little one lie down on the card while you draw around them.

Then, let them loose with whatever crafty things you have about the house ‒ paints, pens, pencils, glitter, pom-poms…

Anything goes!

Dot Sticker Trees

6. Dot sticker trees

Looking for a Christmas activity for toddlers to keep your little elf occupied for a while?

This dot sticker tree by Busy Toddler is the perfect preschool Christmas activity for when you want a little time to yourself.

Easy to make, too, all you need is a big piece of paper or card to draw the outline of a Christmas tree, then have your little one stick dot stickers (or any type of sticker) to decorate the tree.

Don’t Ring The Bells!

7. Don’t ring the bells!

Help your little one’s motor skills and spatial awareness develop with this preschool Christmas activity.

Tie some jingle bells to string, then attach the string to act as an obstacle course for them to navigate.

Some Christmas toddlers’ activities are absolute classics.

Here are our top ten must-do Christmas activities for preschoolers throughout the festive season:

Christmas Wish List

8. Christmas wish list

Writing letters to Santa doesn’t have to be with words, if your little one is yet to learn to write.

How about raiding magazines and Christmas catalogs and letting your little elf cut out their favorite toys with child-safe scissors, then they can stick them to their wish list.

Dear Santa Printables

9. Dear Santa printables

If your little elf is learning to write, but isn’t ready for full sentences just yet, how about some fill-in-the-blank letters to Santa?

We like this printable version by Farmer’s Wife Rambles , with simple prompts for your little one.

Candy Cane Hunt

10. Candy cane hunt

Scavenger hunts aren’t just for Easter!

All you need to do for this fun Christmas activity for toddlers is to hide wrapped candy canes about the house (at eye-level for your little one, so they don’t have to clamber about too high for them).

Then let them loose to find them all!

Our top tip: count how many you hide, so you don’t end up with candy canes hidden for months afterward!

Christmas Baking

11. Christmas baking

It’s not Christmas until your house smells like freshly-baked cookies and gingerbread!

Depending on how old your little peanut is, have them get involved with the baking ‒ or, if they’re smaller, let their artistic side free while they decorate them with icing.

Is it even Christmas if the house doesn’t smell like gingerbread and nutmeg?

Don’t forget to take photos before you gobble it up!

Singing Christmas Carols

12. Singing Christmas carols

Wrap up warm and take a stroll around your neighborhood, singing festive songs with your little elf. Not sure which songs to sing?

Check out our 25 Christmas Songs for Kids .

A perfect Christmas activity for preschoolers!

Stringing Popcorn and Cranberries

13. Stringing popcorn and cranberries

A beautiful, eco-friendly way to decorate this Christmas.

While the sharp needle makes this a Christmas activity for preschoolers who are a little older, littler elves can help by passing popcorn and cranberries or pushing the decorations further down the string.

Such a wholesome, easy Christmas craft for toddlers!

Make Christmas Cards

14. Make Christmas cards

The best part of having children around at Christmastime?

They can make the cards, so you don’t have to!

Get your hands on some white or colored card, fold them in half, and stock up with festive crafting materials.

Then let them go wild with Christmassy designs!

A classic Christmas activity for kindergarteners.

See Where Santa Is

15. Where is Santa?

If your little one is too excited to sleep around Christmas, why not show them where Santa is right there and then with the special Santa Tracker by Google ?

Plus, if you’re looking for more online Christmas activities for preschoolers, they’ve got a bunch of fun Christmassy games to play, including Make Your Own Elf and Santa Selfie!

Cut-Out Snowflakes

16. Cut-out snowflakes

One of the more traditional toddler Christmas crafts, all you need is white paper and toddler-friendly scissors.

Fold up the paper a few times, then cut little pieces out of it ‒ then unfold to see your unique snowflake design!

Elf on the Shelf

17. Elf on the Shelf

Since 2005, Elf on the Shelf has pretty much dominated Christmas for toddlers.

Just get your hands on an Elf on the Shelf, then each night, as your little peanut goes to sleep, move the elf to a different place in a fun position.

After some Elf on the Shelf inspiration? Check out their website .

Sled races

18. Sled races

If you’re somewhere you can expect a white Christmas, sledding is a must .

Dress your little elves warm, grab your sled, and head to the top of a nearby snowy hill.

Make sure you’re keeping your distance from other sledders ‒ after all, it is a popular Christmas activity for kids of all ages ‒ and slide!

There are so many fun things to do with preschoolers over Christmas, helping to develop their motor skills, social skills, literacy, math skills, and logical thinking.

So if you’re wondering what Christmas activities for preschoolers you can do this yuletide season, we’ve got you covered:

Snow Spray Paint

19. Snow spray paint

Let your toddler’s artistic mind run free!

All you need to do for this fun toddlers’ Christmas activity is wait for a snow day, mix food dye with water in a spray bottle, then see what masterpieces your mini Picasso creates!

This is one of the easiest Christmas crafts for 2-year-olds ‒ so easy, and virtually mess-free!

Homemade Christmas Slime

20. Homemade Christmas slime

Kids love slime.

It’s a fantastic sensory Christmas activity for toddlers and preschoolers , so why not make your own?

We love this Christmas slime recipe from The Best Ideas for Kids .

Christmas Alphabet Puzzle

21. Christmas alphabet puzzle

If your little one is starting to learn the alphabet, this is the perfect Christmas toddler activity for you!

First, line up 26 popsicle sticks, then draw a festive picture on them, and write the alphabet from A-Z on the bottom of the sticks.

Then jumble them up and have your little elf put the puzzle back together!

Check out the full guide by Teaching Mama .

Plant a Popsicle Christmas Tree

22. Plant a popsicle Christmas tree

Another of our favorite Christmas activities for preschoolers if you have lots of popsicle sticks left over!

This one’s great for developing fine motor skills in toddlers ‒ simply stick some green colored triangles to the popsicle sticks, then get a thick piece of card, cut a few small holes in it, and have your little peanut ‘plant’ the popsicle Christmas trees in the card.

Color by Numbers Christmas Tree

23. Color by numbers Christmas tree

If your little elf is learning different numbers, how about this ‘color by numbers’ Christmas activity for toddlers?

Simply draw an easy Christmas picture, like a Christmas tree, then add smaller drawings for your toddler to color in, marked with a specific number.

Then assign a color to that number, and let your little one get arty!

Handprint Christmas Wreath

24. Handprint Christmas wreath

How about the cutest festive wreath you’ve ever seen?

This is a classic Christmas toddler activity, one of our favorite Christmas crafts for 3-year-olds.

All you need is green card or paper, scissors, and red pom-poms or paint (for the holly berries). Have your little one trace around their hand (or you can do it for them, if they find it tricky), cut out the handprint, stick it on a wreath wire, and repeat.

Add some ‘holly berries’ for extra festive feels.

Check out this guide on Messy Little Monster .

Wrapping Paper Puzzles

25. Wrapping paper puzzles

Does your little elf get excited when it comes to unwrapping presents, eagerly tearing open presents before Christmas Day?

This toddlers’ Christmas activity is perfect to get sensory satisfaction without losing the magic of Christmas morning.

All you need is a chunky puzzle, like this one by Melissa & Doug , wrapping paper, and tape.

Wrap up the individual pieces of the puzzle, then have your little one unwrap each one to finish the puzzle.

Winter Wonderland Window

26. Winter wonderland window

Joy to the world!

Bring a smile to the face of anyone who walks past your window, whilst entertaining your little one with a fun preschool Christmas activity.

Find some window markers, like these by Crayola (they’re washable, too!), then let your mini artist draw some festive scenes.

Christmas trees, snowmen, presents, and elves are great additions to your winter wonderland window.

We Wish You A Smelly Christmas!

27. We wish you a smelly Christmas!

Looking for a sensory Christmas activity for preschoolers?

Simply fill some empty jars with things that smell Christmassy , like peppermint, chocolate, pine needles, and nutmeg, then have your little elf put on a blindfold and smell each of them to find out what they are.

Silver Bells Memory Game

28. Silver bells memory game

Toddlers love picture memory games like Snap ‒ and when there’s chocolate involved, it’s even better!

Get your hands on some Hersey’s Kisses, then draw some small Christmassy doodles on the underneath, mix them up on a table, then have you and your little one take it in turns to match them up.

No eating the Kisses until you make a match!

Colorful snow

29. Colorful snow

If there’s some snowfall over the festive season, turn the white ground into a blank canvas for your little artists!

All you need is spray bottles, water, and food dye.

Then let your little Picasso ‘paint’ on the snow to their heart’s content!

After some festive activities to teach preschoolers while they’re at school?

These activities will get their minds whirring and help develop important skills.

Wonderful winter word search

30. Wonderful winter word search

A fantastic Christmas family game to while away the time over the yuletide season ‒ for kids and adults!

Turn it into a competition by giving out the same word search to the whole family and setting a timer to see who can finish it the fastest.

You can print some off here from The Spruce Crafts , or play an online version, like this one by ABCYa .

Christmas tree ‘nice’ tracker

31. Christmas tree ‘nice’ tracker

How about treating your little elf whenever they’re ‘nice’ (not naughty) over the Christmas period?

Make a Christmas tree out of stacked green painted empty toilet paper rolls, put little treats inside (like chocolates, candy, or small toys), and cover with green tissue paper.

Then, whenever they’re nice, they can poke a hole in one of the rolls for a treat!

Homemade Snowman Christmas Countdown Calendar

32. Homemade snowman Christmas countdown calendar

Crafting with paper plates is what Christmas as a toddler is all about!

To make this festive countdown, all you need is a paper plate, a piece of orange card, scissors, and a paper fastener.

Then your little elf can decorate the snowman, and all you need to do is put it together and add the numbers around the edge.

See the full guide on how to make your own snowman Christmas countdown calendar by Coffee and Carpool .

Christmas Tangrams

33. Christmas tangrams

Tangrams are different geometric shapes that fit together to create pictures.

They make a fantastic Christmas activity for preschoolers, too ‒ all you need are some festive designs to go with the shapes.

We like these free printable ones by Prekinders .

Snowman Name Banners

34. Snowman name banners

If your little peanut is learning to spell their own name, then this is one of the best Christmas literacy activities for preschoolers.

Using white cut-out circles, they can decorate a snowman’s face (with whatever decorations you can find ‒ get creative!), then they spell their name on individual circles for the snowman’s body.

Need some more guidance? Fun-A-Day has the full lowdown.

Christmas Tree Name Puzzle

35. Christmas tree name puzzle

Another of our favorite Christmas literacy activities for preschoolers to help them spell their name is this fun Christmas tree name puzzle by How Wee Learn .

It’s super-easy to make, all you need is some green paper cut in a triangle, then you cut it into smaller pieces (enough pieces for each letter of your child’s name), write the letters on each of them in order, have them add some pizzazz to it with pipe cleaners, glitter, and pom-poms, then let them put the tree back together!

So what’s our number one top tip for keeping your little peanut entertained over the festive season?

Get involved .

These aren’t just Christmas activities for preschoolers, they’re fun for adults, too!

activities for preschoolers christmas

Giving gifts to kids on holidays is out of hand. My children now expect presents on Valentine's Day and Easter.

  • My children were expecting monthly gifts based on the holidays.
  • I decided to only give them new things on their birthdays and Christmas.
  • Now we do activities for holidays like Valentine's Day and Easter.

Insider Today

I love seeing my children's eyes light up when they finally get a long-coveted stuffie or toy truck. I spend hours with my children building Lego bricks , getting messy with new slime kits and art sets, and being too competitive while learning the rules of a new board game. I like to think that these gifts help my children feel special and help us create core memories together.

However, it seems that every year, as soon as Christmas is over, I am bombarded with ads and blog posts suggesting the perfect Valentine's Day gifts for kids. Soon enough, these Valentine's Day ads are replaced with suggestions for the perfect Easter gift, last day of school presents, and so on in a relentless stream throughout the year.

They expect gifts almost every month

My son became accustomed to expecting gifts on a near-monthly basis. Once, on Mother's Day , he asked me what he was getting for Child's Day, a holiday he assumed meant that even more gifts would be coming his way. It was clear that for my children, getting gifts at all had ceased being something special and started to be something they had a right to receive regularly.

I had enough. My children are fortunate enough to have access to a wide range of toys, games, and enriching activities . It was time to put an end to the gifts-for-every-occasion mindset. I am privileged enough to be able to buy a seemingly endless supply of gifts for my children, but that doesn't mean I should.

By succumbing to the pressure created by social media algorithms, marketing executives, and influencers with affiliate accounts , I was teaching my children that the only way to show love, celebrate a holiday, or mark a special occasion was with material goods. I had created a sense of entitlement.

I was done with the clutter

Apart from being expensive, this mindset resulted in clutter from gifts , big and small. My children could be thoughtless and impulsive about what they requested from the Easter Bunny or Santa, knowing that they needed to wait no more than a month or two for another gift.

As the clutter accumulated in my home, all of these gifts created stress. They meant more time cleaning up and less time having fun. When I tried to donate unused toys, more often than not, I found they had to be tossed because a key piece or two was missing, rendering them useless. After I put yet more plastic in the trash, I felt guilty about adding to landfills and the climate crisis. I knew I needed to break the cycle.

I decided to stick to giving gifts only on birthdays and Christmas and went cold turkey. I haven't given up celebrating entirely, but we mark occasions differently.

We do activities instead

Now, when Valentine's Day rolls around, my family usually celebrates with chocolate fondue and extra hugs. With new traditions, my children look forward to our toy-free Valentine's Day each year.

When Easter rolls around, I happily stay up late stuffing eggs and wake up early to watch my children search for candy. I no longer perseverate over the perfect toys for Easter baskets and focus instead on creating a fun experience for my kids, albeit one with lots of candy.

On the last day of school, we might celebrate with ice cream, or I might just tell my children how proud I am of them. They shouldn't expect a gift for making it through the school year, something they are obligated to do anyway.

Limiting how often my children receive gifts has made their birthdays and Christmas all the more special. These occasions are my opportunity to spoil my children. They consider more carefully what they ask for, knowing it will be a while before they get another new toy. In-between we take photos and make notes of things they desire. They are hardly deprived.

Sometimes they can do chores to earn money for a toy they just can't wait to have. Sometimes I make a detour to the toy store for no reason at all, surprising and delighting them. I have found that a gift for no reason is appreciated much more than the one they feel they have the right to receive.
