Awesome places to volunteer in Greenville

volunteer opportunities greenville sc

Americans are generous in giving of their time to help others. Released a year ago, the Corporation for National and Community Service survey,  which gleans its data from the U.S Census Bureau, estimates that 30.3% of Americans volunteer in some capacity, with the largest percentage being in the Generation X age range. The survey showed that 30.8% of South Carolinians volunteer, which equals over 1.2 million people.

Paulette Dunn, executive director at Loaves & Fishes, a local Greenville nonprofit that rescues food from donors like grocery stores and restaurants and helps serve that food to needy residents in the community, says Greenville is certainly a generous town.

“We had over 150 volunteers in 2018 who gave 13,048 hours, which equates to over $300,000 of value to Loaves and Fishes,” Dunn said. “By the end of last year, we had served over 380,000 people in the community and our volunteers play a huge role in our mission.”

Fundraising has the highest volunteer participation at 36%, according to the survey above, and food prep and distribution is right behind at 34%. For the volunteers at Loaves & Fishes, Dunn knows they believe in what the organization is doing on both an environmental and human level since the volunteers play such an integral part in meeting the needs of the community through taking concrete steps not to waste food.

Here in Greenville, there are plenty of opportunities to spend time helping others. We asked our readers where they like to volunteer and did research of our own to find great organizations in town that are in need of extra help.

Loaves & Fishes

volunteer opportunities greenville sc

25 Woods Lake Road, No. 810, Greenville

Loaves & Fishes rescues food that would otherwise go to waste and distributes it to its more than 94 partner agencies in the county, which then make sure it gets to those who need it most. The nonprofit seeks to eliminate food insecurity and just purchased a new walk-in cooler in the Cityview/San Souci community, where 30% of families live below the Federal poverty line — yet where partner agencies could serve only 719 a month out of 50,000 residents. Now they will be able to meet the needs of so many more people there on a 24/7 basis.

What you can do: Loaves & Fishes has daily routes where volunteers rescue, from local grocery stores and restaurants, food that is perfectly good and healthy but would otherwise go to waste, and deliver it to one or more of the partner agencies. Rescue routes take about an hour to an hour-and-a-half to complete. They are also in need of office assistants.

How to volunteer: Fill out a volunteer form online and you’ll be contacted to do a short interview and application and then you’re good to go and start rescuing food.

Greer Soup Kitchen

How to volunteer: Volunteers are at the soup kitchen from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, and from 4-5:30 p.m. Sundays, and they sometimes have other times they need filled. Give them a call to see how you can best be of assistance: 864-968-0323

Rescue routes take approximately 1 – 1.5 hours to complete and offer tremendous flexibility to volunteers. Choose either a regular weekly route, or run a route when you can – either choice is helpful! The first step after signing up is orientation, which is hosted 2-3 times monthly at our headquarters. Once a driver has been through orientation they can chose routes based on their availability each week thereafter.

Allow christ’s compassion to flow through you.

Miracle Hill Ministries’ volunteer program exists to connect people who have a desire to share their God-given talents with those in our care by offering personal opportunities that are meaningful to them and beneficial to the ministry.

In many ways, our volunteers are the heart of our ministry. Volunteers don’t just help with everyday tasks in our facilities, they also play an integral role in our guests’ lives. When someone receives a helping hand or a kind smile at just the right moment, it can make all the difference in the world. Our guests have seen God at work through these perfectly-timed smiles, acts of kindness, and handshakes.

Our volunteers’ compassion radiates through the hallways of our shelters. Their joyful spirits create a palpable sense of peace for our guests—who, in many cases, haven’t felt at ease in a very, very long time.

Greenville Humane Society

Make a Difference in a Pet’s Life

By joining the Greenville Humane Society Volunteer Program, you will become a part of a large community of people who genuinely care about finding homes for animals in the Greenville Community. Our volunteers are hardworking, dedicated, passionate, kind, and not afraid to get their hands dirty!

Volunteer Requirements

  • All volunteers must be 18 or older
  • Prospective volunteers must fill out an application. All volunteers are accepted on a case-by-case basis.
  • All volunteers must go through an orientation session prior to beginning their volunteer services
  • We ask all of our volunteers to make a minimum 6-month commitment to serve the animals in our care, at least once a week
  • We do not fulfill court-ordered or pre-trial intervention community service hours. This rule includes all regular and alternate volunteer opportunities including hours awarded for item donations and fostering pets.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Traditional Opportunities
  • Alternative Opportunities
  • Group Opportunities
  • Youth Opportunities

We offer various volunteer opportunities to fit all different skillsets. We’re always in need of volunteers for helping keep our facility healthy and clean, socializing future companions, and providing support at events in the community. We offer a variety of opportunities to help animals that work with your preferences and flexible schedules.

General Volunteer

Assist the Greenville Humane Society with tasks including washing dishes and toys, ensuring laundry is clean and folded, preparing newspaper to line kennels, and helping keep the facility healthy and clean. Additional opportunities such as bathing puppies, socializing cats, preparing surgery supplies, packing foster supplies, and rocking sick puppies are available for Fear Free Graduates.

Dog Walker Volunteer

Take adult dogs on walks to provide exercise and add enjoyment to their time at the Greenville Humane Society, work on simple commands and leash walking skills, and socialize them with humans as well as other animals. Dog Walker Volunteers must be Fear Free Certified and take a Behavioral Training Class with Greenville Humane Society staff.

Special Event Volunteer

Assist the Greenville Humane Society staff members in public settings including events and other meetings. This role is responsible for representing the Greenville Humane Society at on- and off-site events and establishing good will in the community. Special Event Volunteers are expected to take ownership of an adoptable pet at these events in an effort to find them their forever home. All Special Event Volunteers must be approved by the Volunteer Manager and must be Fear Free Certified.

Want to get involved, but your time constraints don’t fit with GHS’s schedule? No problem! There are plenty of ways you can help pets in our care. Explore alternate volunteer opportunities below.

Become a Foster Parent

As a Foster Parent, you will receive 8 volunteer hours per day when caring for one of our sick animals. Please let our Healing Place Manager know that you need hours and she will be able to approve them after the fostering period.

Volunteer by Collecting Donations

Check out our wish lists! These are items that we need donated to our facility on a regular basis. We award 1 hour per every five items donated from our lists. Donations can be dropped off at our Adoption Center during normal business hours.

Volunteer by Completing DIY Projects

There are plenty of fun crafts that you can make at home and bring in to the Greenville Humane Society–we call these “animal advocate” activities. Each craft is tied to a certain number of volunteer hours. See the PDF below for more ideas and information.

On-Site Group Volunteering

During an onsite group volunteer experience, your group will be hands-on at our facility completing tasks that will directly benefit the animals in our care. Some of our typical tasks you may perform include:

– Unfolding Newspaper for Puppies and Kittens – Opening Syringes and Preparing Paper Collars – Putting Together E-Collars for Post-Surgery Pets – Making Peanut Butter Kongs for Animals – Preparing Individual Flea/Tick/Heartworm Packets – Folding Laundry/Washing Dishes in our Volunteer Room – Helping with Mail by Stamping and Sealing Envelopes – This opportunity is available Monday – Wednesday from 1 pm – 3 pm.

Service Saturdays is a new program created so teens can get involved with the Greenville Humane Society! Spend a Saturday volunteering and earn service hours.

– This program is designed for ages 8-12 and 13-17. Please ensure you are signing your child up for the appropriate session. – Each child must have a release signed and dated by parent for each Saturday attended. – No late arrivals. No early departures. – Wish List items will be posted each month. Any child bringing five wish list items will receive double service hours for this Saturday. – Any child attending all dates and earning more than 40 hours is eligible to receive a recommendation letter suitable for school and will be entered in a drawing for a special prize. – There is a nonrefundable registration donation of $25 for each Saturday, which must be paid at time of registration.

Volunteer Application Process

Orientations are now open.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Greenville Humane Society. New volunteer orientations are once again open! If you are interested in volunteering, please complete our volunteer application below.

After submitting your application, our volunteer coordinator will review it within 2-5 business days. If your application is approved, you will then be required to attend a Volunteer Orientation Session where you will learn all of the important information required to be a successful volunteer at our facility. Upon registering for orientation, a small fee is required to help offset the cost of training and volunteer materials (volunteer t-shirt, volunteer handbook, and leash if required).

Your volunteer application will remain on file for 60 days, giving you two months to attend an orientation session. After 60 days have passed, you will be required to reapply.

These Upstate organizations still need volunteers, donations for the 2020 holiday season

volunteer opportunities greenville sc

Physical distancing due to the pandemic may limit some opportunities to do in-person volunteering this holiday season, but the opportunities do exist.

There are nonprofits in need of people and donations to help them meet the needs of those less fortunate and to spread joy in our communities.

The nonprofits listed below are among those that can use your gift of volunteerism or donations:

Harvest Hope Food Bank

Harvest Hope Food Bank in Greenville is in need of both volunteers and donations for the upcoming season.

Volunteer shifts are posted weekly on its website – harvesthope.org . Click on "Get Involved" and see the shifts available for that upcoming week. The variety of opportunities include sorting and bagging produce, dry goods, drinks, etc., working a station outside during the drive-thru pantry, or helping to pack mobile food pantry or senior boxes.

The organization welcomes both monetary and food donations. A running list of its most needed items is on the website. Folks can also sign up to host a food drive - either a traditional food drive or a virtual food drive.

Salvation Army

  • The Salvation Army of Greenville 's biggest volunteer need is for bell ringers at its red kettles. The kettle campaign launches Nov. 13, and volunteer bell ringers are needed to help cover shifts until the campaign ends on Christmas Eve. The public can sign up for available shifts here:  https://timecounts.org/the-salvation-army/events/29697

Miracle Hill Ministries

Due to COVID-19, Miracle Hill has fewer in-person volunteer opportunities this year, but the organization has needs for "guests" in its facilities. Miracle Hill looks to provide each "guest" who stays in its Upstate shelters with a bag at Christmastime "as a reminder that they are special and loved this Christmas season." You can find its online wish lists here . The wish lists will be updated throughout the holiday season so that the current needs of each shelter location are conveyed under each need, the organization said.

Triune Mercy Center

While Triune Mercy Center will not have volunteers in its building, it is in need of the following pantry items:

  • Pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, jelly, canned tuna or chicken, Hamburger Helper, Jiffy Cornbread Mix, cereal
  • Warm coats, hand warmers, blankets.

For more information, call Linda Hanna at 864-233-8020, ext. 120, or email her at [email protected]

United Community Bank's Upstate branches will be providing Christmas gifts to local children through its annual Angel Tree program. Participating branches will place Christmas trees in their lobbies with “Be an Angel” tags displaying information for deserving children.

To “Be an Angel” with United Community Bank, visit any local branch and select an Angel tag. Due to COVID-19, the program is accepting only gift cards and monetary donations this year. Foster parents will shop for each individual child. All gift cards should be returned to the United Community Bank lobby no later than Monday, Nov. 30, 2020. All gifts are given anonymously and delivered in time for Christmas.

Two toy drives are planned to benefit children in the Upstate served by Country Santa.
