Mass Effect 2 Walkthrough - Garrus' Loyalty Mission - Fade

Mass Effect 2 Walkthrough - Garrus' Loyalty Mission - Fade

Introduction

You can find out about Fade through Captain Bailey. He’s supposedly working out of the lower district near the warehouses. Take the transit system down and look for Fade inside a side room. It seems unlikely that this volus is the great Fade, regardless he isn’t too happy about your request for information. The renegade interrupt kills both of his bodyguards and gets a quick confession. They’ll still be scared off if you don’t shoot though.

He’ll point you toward the factory district and we’ll have a bit of a fight on our hands. It seems like this mission was artificially delayed though. Except for having to kill two heavy mechs, it’s a complete cake walk of a mission that easier than Miranda’s or Jacob’s. I’d go ahead and bring Mordin so that you have incinerate available. You already have overload because of Garrus. Even if you already have it, it’s nice to have a second. Grunt can work too.

Take the transit system over to the factory and get ready for a fight.

Fade’s Factory

This is a pretty quick mission and it’s fairly easy. Advance and kill a few mechs. The area up ahead is full of mechs spaced out in pairs. If you move quickly you can probably find them while they’re still inside the containers. You can damage and even kill them while they’re still balled up. There are some Blue Suns mercenaries in here too. Just move carefully along the line of boxes and check your corners at each big container. A steady grind will let you take the area without much damage. Keep an eye out for safes and circuit boards that you can hack. None of them have that much in them individually, but they add up to a lot over the whole level.

The next spot is where things get a bit tougher. Once you leave the main warehouse, you’ll notice a big change in design. This is the spot where you’ll start facing some more elite Blue Suns. It’s not odd to see legionaires here, so stay alright and have a SMG ready to knock out shields and barriers. A few mechs will drop in close too, so gun them down quickly. Take up a spot on the pillar afterward and just hang tight until you don’t see any more movement at the end of the area. Carefully move up and enter the makeshift office. You can hack a few more things here and grab some minerals. There isn’t much interesting stuff here though, so move on quickly.

We’ve got one a bit of a challenge up ahead. Once you take out a few of the elites, you should get a warning about a heavy mech. A carrier will drop off the heavy mech just a little bit in front of you. You don’t have a lot of space to handle this. Don’t take cover in the big red container. It’s too close and the mech will just flank you and rip you apart. Hang back by the pillars and use your abilities to get through the shields and armor. Then just lay it on thick to bring it down.

Second Stage

Move on up and get into the office area. Loot the safe and check the area. You can also look out the shutters to get a view of the battle you’re about to enter. When you’re ready to go, move on out to the right and hack the terminal to boost your sniper rifle damage.

Mass Effect 2 Guide - Garrus’ Loyalty Mission - Harkin and the Two Heavy Mechs

A bunch of Blue Suns mercenaries are waiting for you. The first waves are near the first set of crates and there should be a few mechs. Just take cover and blast right through them. Watch the right side. A lot of mercenaries are probably still dug in on the upper platforms. Climb up and over to scan the right side and take them out. There’s a PDA you can hack here too.

The next area is the final fight. Harkin will call up two heavy mechs to fight you. They are also at a really close range. Just hang back and focus on taking them out one at a time. Use overlord and incinerate if you have them. You will also have to watch their machine gun fire. When it stops, you need to pop up and take a few shots.

Once you manage to take out the first heavy mech, the second will die as long as you can stay alive.

Harkin will put up a lot of raised platforms. I assume this was supposed to be a puzzle, but it’s not. Just go to the left and climb the stairs that the crates make. Kill the two light mechs at the top to talk to Harkin.

Garrus will want to shoot out Harkin’s kneecap at the end of the conversation. Paragons need to use the interrupt to stop him. Renegades can let it happen.

Garrus’ loyalty mission all comes down to this. We have to make our decision. Does Sidonis deserve to die? It’s a fairly paragon vs. renegade situation.

Renegades can just let him take the shot. Sidonis will die and Garrus will be at peace.

Paragons can still get Garrus’ loyalty. They need to start by warning Sidonis of the setup. You then need to do the paragon interrupt to block Garrus’ second attempt. The rest is fairly standard. You just have to keep talking to him and get the full confession. Garrus will hear it and come to a certain degree of forgiveness. You can tell him to leave once Garrus gives him the go ahead. Sidonis will then walk away and turn himself into C-Sec for his crimes on Omega. Garrus will be at peace once it is over.

Either path will secure Garrus’ loyalty for the final mission.

This post is part of the series: Mass Effect 2 Walkthrough - Loyalty Missions - Part 2

Mass Effect 2: How To Complete Garrus' Loyalty Mission

Here's how to complete Eye for an Eye, Garrus' loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2.

Garrus' loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2 ,  Eye for an Eye , sees Garrus finally having the opportunity to enact vengeance on Sidonis , his former partner who betrayed their squad on Omega.

In order to gain Garrus' loyalty and make sure he survives the suicide mission in the Collector base, you will need to help him locate Sidonis and decide whether Garrus should kill him or not.

So, if you want to make Garrus loyal and ensure that he appears in Mass Effect 3, look no further than this Mass Effect 2 Garrus loyalty mission guide , which includes all kinds of useful information on where to find Fade , what happens if you shoot Harkin , and whether you should let Garrus take the shot or move to the side .

How To Start Garrus' Loyalty Mission In Mass Effect 2

garrus loyalty mission mass effect 2

Garrus' loyalty mission is acquired after having him on the Normandy for several quests. Eventually, Kelly Chambers should let you know that Garrus wants to talk to you, which is your cue to visit him at the main battery on deck three. He will tell you that he has tracked down someone who knows of Sidonis' whereabouts and ask you to go to the Citadel to find more details.

As with all of the other loyalty missions in the game (except Legion's), this should be completed before embarking on the acquire Reaper IFF mission, which is the first part of Mass Effect 2's endgame section. If you leave this until afterwards, you may lose squadmates and crewmates, so if you're going for a perfect run where everybody survives the suicide mission, this quest and all other loyalty missions should be completed before going to acquire the Reaper IFF.

How To Complete Garrus' Loyalty Mission In Mass Effect 2

garrus loyalty mission mass effect 2

The first thing you need to do after acquiring this mission is head to the Citadel. When you land, go straight through to C-Sec, which is the first location you'll encounter after walking through customs. Speak to Captain Bailey on the right and ask about Fade. He'll tell you to go to the warehouse, where one of Fade's agents is currently operating out of. You can locate the warehouse area of the Citadel on the western side of the minimap.

Head over to the warehouse and you'll meet a volus with two krogan bodyguards. You can shoot the krogan with a Renegade interrupt, but you don't need to fight them, so if you're playing a Paragon Shepard just ignore the prompt and Garrus will scare them off anyway. The volus will be left on his own and will tell you that Fade is Harkin, the ex-C-Sec officer who originally told you where to find Garrus in the first game.

Harkin is located in the Factory District, which can be accessed from any Citadel Rapid Transport unit. There's one just outside the warehouse if you go out to the marketplace and head left. When you arrive here, you will need to fight through several waves of mercs and LOKI mechs. There are also three large mechs towards the end, two of which will jump down at the same time in front of the building Harkin is hiding in. These have a lot of health, but you can easily beat them by using Garrus' Overload ability, as well as another Overload user like Kasumi or a different tech squadmate like Tali or Mordin.

After defeating the first large mech, you will move into a container. Interact with the shutter on the far side to gain access to the final area, which is where the two mechs will spawn. Take these down and move up towards Harkin. Garrus will extract the info he is after and will move to shoot him in the leg. You can trigger a Paragon interrupt here for morality points, but even if you let Garrus shoot Harkin, he won't kill him, so it doesn't really matter and mostly pertains to whether you're playing Paragon or Renegade.

mass effect harkin mission

Harkin sets up a meeting with Sidonis, which leads to the final phase of the mission. After the cutscene, you will automatically arrive at the meeting point in the Orbital Lounge. Your job is to distract Sidonis while Garrus moves into position.

This is where the main decision for Garrus' loyalty mission comes into play. You can choose to either warn Sidonis that Garrus is here or move out of the way on Garrus' signal so that he can take the shot. It doesn't matter which choice you make - you'll gain Garrus' loyalty either way, so this is once again mostly about whether you're playing Paragon or Renegade.

The easier option is to just move out of the way and allow Garrus to take the shot, as it ends the quest quickest. If you warn Sidonis, however, and continue to talk to him after successfully executing a Paragon interrupt, Garrus will start to get annoyed. Meanwhile, Sidonis will open up about what really happened - mercs threatened his life and he revealed his squadmates' location out of fear. He feels guilty to this day and is haunted by their faces at night. While Garrus doesn't forgive him, you can tell him that Sidonis is already paying for his crimes and Garrus will eventually decide to back down. This is the option I personally go for, as Garrus seems grateful that he didn't need to kill his former friend after you return to the Normandy shuttle, noting that he was still able to see good in him. Again, though, it's up to you - Garrus' loyalty mission is structured in such a way that completing it will ensure his survival on the suicide mission either way.

Once you're finished, talk to Garrus on the Normandy about what transpired. If Sidonis survives, there will be a news report in Mass Effect 3 stating that a turian named Sidonis died protecting a group of civilians from the Reapers.

Mass Effect 2: How to Earn Garrus' Loyalty

Garrus is out for vengeance against a Turian who got his whole squad killed, and to gain his loyalty he needs Shepard's help to carry it out.

Mass Effect 's Garrus Vakarian has always been a bit of a renegade. When Commander Shepard first met him, the Turian was tired of C-Sec limitations and procedures getting in the way of doing his job. Reunited on Omega in ME2 , he was going under the codename Archangel, and he had plenty of stories to tell about the things he'd been up to since Shepard's death. He'd put together his own team to deal with the riff-raff, and things were going well until a Turian named Sidonis sold them out and got them all killed.

This betrayal stirred deep resentment and anger in Garrus. It seemed there was nothing to be done about it, but eventually, he got word that Sidonis had been seen on the Citadel with Fade, who helped people disappear. It was time to meter out justice before Sidonis could escape into hiding without paying for his crimes. All squadmates have unfinished business to attend to before the Omega 4 Relay suicide mission, and taking care of Sidonis is Garrus' unfinished business.

Mission: Finding Fade

mass effect harkin mission

At the Citadel, EDI advises Shepard to head to C-Sec for more information about Sidonis and Fade. Speak to Captain Bailey, who informs Shepard that Fade has contacts in the warehouses on Level 26. Arriving at the warehouse, find a Volus surrounded by two Krogan bodyguards. A Renegade interrupt provides a chance to shoot the bodyguards and gain +5 Renegade points  while ignoring it will only cause the pair to draw their weapons and cause the Krogan to leave the Volus defenseless. Note: No paragon points are gained for not shooting the bodyguards. The next +2 Renegade points can be gained by telling the Volus to shut up when he begins protesting.

Learn that the Volus is not Fade, but he works for him. Fade is a former human C-Sec officer. The Volus also notes that Fade operates out of an old prefab foundry in the Factory District. He will not be easy to get to, as he's surrounded by Blue Suns mercs. If Shepard remembers Harkin, they can ask how he became Fade, at which point the Volus explains that getting fired from C-Sec prompted him to use his inside knowledge of the law to help people in trouble disappear.

After Garrus warns the Volus they'll be back for him if they don't find Fade, head outside to the Rapid Transit terminal and select the Factory District for instant transport. Upon arrival, they encounter Harkin and two Blue Suns in a cutscene. Harkin recognizes Shepard and Garrus and makes a run for it, leaving the mercs behind to deal with the threat.

Mission: Battling Through the Factory

mass effect harkin mission

Dispatch the two mercs from cover and then head through the door. There are 600 credits in the trash on the left, so grab them and medkit from the table before taking cover against the LOKI mechs that emerge from the shipping container on the left. Battle through mechs and mercs, taking advantage of the elevated areas to get better shots and cover until the path begins to narrow. More mechs come out of the shipping container on the right. Take them out, then search the area for dropped ammo and medi-gel. There is also a hackable wall save containing 1500 credits and a circuit board worth 900 credits.

Advance forward, taking out the LOKI mechs and mercs. Use pillars and crates to move upward, being cautious, as mechs will drop from the mechanism on the ceiling and the mercs will keep coming in waves. Advancing too quickly is not advised here, as the mercs can merge into a hoard that is much harder to battle through, and two tough Legionnaires come in the last wave to up the ante. Once the area is clear, grab the power cells and the medkit, then bypass the two circuit boards, each of which has 900 credits. There is also a laptop worth 4500 credits and 2000 units of iridium to pick up.

Access the bridge controls and proceed into the next waves of mercs and LOKI mechs. Once the squad advances far enough, it will trigger a YMIR mech to take out. After all enemies have been dispatched, grab the power cells, hack the circuit board for 1200 credits, and then enter the office.

Related: Mass Effect 2 Guide: How to Save the Colony of Horizon

Before activating the shutter controls in the office, pick up the power cells and bypass the wall safe for an additional 2100 credits. Take the medi-gel and head into the next room to hack the terminal for a sniper rifle damage upgrade and a Forged ID on the desk. Return to the room, activate the shutters, and then head out and fight through the advancing mechs protecting Harkin. Harkin raises the platforms when all the YMIR mechs are destroyed, so Shepard needs to climb up to get to him, taking out the last two LOKI mechs Harkin deploys before reaching his location.

Mission: Tricking Sidonis

mass effect harkin mission

With Harkin defenseless and unprotected, Garrus and Shepard can question him about Sidonis. Garrus is very rough with Harkin, and when he doesn't talk right away, Garrus kicks him in the groin. Shepard can earn +2 Renegade points for saying "Ouch." Once Garrus tells him who he's looking for, Shepard can gain +2 Paragon points for telling him to be reasonable.

Related: Mass Effect 2 Guide: Prologue & Awakening

Still, Harkin won't easily give up the intel, as it's bad for business. Garrus notes that having a broken neck is even worse for business, which finally prompts Harkin to give in to Garrus' demands. He arranges a meeting with Sidonis outside the Orbital Lounge. Before leaving, Garrus will prepare to shoot Harkin in the knee, at which point Shepard can interrupt and stop him to gain +5 Paragon. If the interrupt is ignored, they instead gain +2 for saying that wasn't necessary or +2 Renegade for telling Harkin to quit whining.

Take the cab to the Orbital Lounge. Inside, Shepard can gain some Paragon or Renegade points by asking Garrus how he's doing and responding with supportive encouragement designed to make him question his motives and beliefs. Regardless, Garrus is bent on taking out Sidonis, so arriving at the lounge, Garrus gets into position while Shepard heads over to distract Sidonis. Trying to Warn Sidonis in conversation nets +2 Paragon with an additional +5 during the interrupt that follows. Keeping him talking to block Garrus's shot gives him time to think more clearly about what he's doing, and telling Garrus not to do it prompts another +15 Paragon points. Encouraging him to take the shot, however, drops +15 Renegade.

Afterward, Garrus will note that he doesn't really want to talk about it, but he does anyway. Shepard can snag additional Paragon points for talking through it with him and noting it's for the best, or, if Sidonis was killed, earn +2 Renegade for asking Garrus if he's done with this. Whether Garrus kills or spares Sidonis, his loyalty is earned, and he can go into the suicide mission with a clear head.

Expose Saren slice16.png

If you've just finished the Citadel Tower hearing, head back down the elevator to the Presidium. Use one of the nearby bridges to cross to the South side of the lake, then head into the Bank, through the small doorway West of the Emporium. Use your Map to find the Bank if you get a bit lost.

Expose Saren slice17.png

Barla Von, who has connections to the infamous Shadow Broker, is located in his small bank. Oddly enough, though, he'll be open to giving you all of the information you could possibly want, since Saren's angered the Shadow Broker. He speaks with confident candor, so pick his brain to the fullest extent.

If you've already been to Chora's Den (such as for Citadel: Garrus ), then you probably already bumped into Wrex without even knowing it! Regardless, Barla Von will tell you that he's currently in C-Sec being questioned by the police. If you haven't been to C-Sec yet, the fastest way there from here is to use the elevator just South of the Embassies.

Expose Saren slice20.png

When you arrive in C-Sec, you can spot Wrex surrounded by C-Sec guards to the side of the central elevator. Approach him, and you'll initiate a scene that ends with him joining your squad after telling you about a Quarian that Fist, the owner of Chora's Den, is going to extort to Saren.

You'll now have two courses of action from this point:

  • Storm Chora's Den : if you already have Garrus, or don't and want to skip him, you should now return to Chora's Den to take on Fist and recover the Quarian.
  • Recruit Garrus : If you don't have Garrus, you should go find him at the Med Clinic.. However this is only possible at this point if you've already been to Chora's Den and talked to Harkin. You will have one last chance at recruiting him at the end of the Expose Saren Mission.

Mass Effect

Screen Rant

Mass effect: how to recruit garrus.

Garrus is easy to miss in the original Mass Effect. Shepard can recruit him after helping him defeat thugs in the Citadel Medical Clinic.

To convince the Council of Saren's guilt and get them to revoke his Specter status near the beginning of  Mass Effect , Shepard will need to recruit a few allies on the Citadel who may have some evidence against the turian. While brainstorming about possible leads after the Council hearing, Shepard can choose to track down Garrus Vakarian, a turian rebel C-Sec officer who has spent time investigating Saren. Shepard can choose to recruit Garrus to join their growing squad in the fight against Saren.

Related:  Mass Effect Timeline: All Major Pre-Mass Effect 1 Events Explained

Garrus, like Wrex, is easily missed or skipped in Mass Effect if players aren't careful or don't know where to find him. However, there are several possible opportunities to make him part of Shepard's team ahead of the mission on Ilos. If he has been recruited, he will continue to be a loyal squadmate to Shepard in the sequels . Whether Shepard recruits him in Mass Effect or not, they will end up recruiting Garrus on Omega in Mass Effect 2 . Here's where to find Garrus and how to recruit him in Mass Effect .

Where to Find Garrus on the Citadel in Mass Effect

Garrus on Omega during Dossier: Archangel in Mass Effect 2

When Shepard first heads to the Presidium for their hearing with the Council in Mass Effect , they will encounter Garrus arguing with one of his superiors. From the resulting conversation with him, they will learn that Garrus has been the officer in charge of investigating Saren and needs more time to gather evidence to present to the Council.

Following the hearing, Shepard will have the option of pursuing Wrex , Garrus, or both for leads. If Shepard chooses to pursue Garrus first, they will need to seek out a man named Harkin at Chora's Den. After a bit of persuading, he will share more information about Anderson and eventually direct Shepard to Dr. Michel at the Medical Clinic. If Shepard pursues Wrex at C-Sec first, they won't need to find Harkin, as Wrex will usually tell them where to find Garrus instead.

From Chora's Den, Shepard can take rapid transit to reach the Clinic more quickly, as it is upstairs and on the opposite end of the Citadel. From the C-Sec offices, players can go up the stairs from the elevator and cross the Upper Wards.

mass effect legendary edition garrus

While at the Clinic, they will witness some of Fist's thugs threatening Dr. Michel and notice Garrus waiting for a clear shot. Shepard and their squad will need to help Garrus take down the three or four thugs. Following the encounter, he will ask to join, and they can agree or decline.

If Shepard recruits Wrex and goes to deal with Fist and save Tali without recruiting Garrus first, after Shepard becomes a Specter, Garrus will seek out the team near the Elevator on their way back to the Normandy and ask to join the squad anyway. Shepard can agree or decline. If they decline at this point, Garrus will remain near the C-Sec elevator through most of the main campaign of  Mass Effect  and can be picked up and recruited later, usually any time before the mission to Ilos. Strangely, if Garrus and Liara have not been recruited by the time the squad heads to Virmire, Wrex will always stand down during his confrontation with Shepard about Saren's krogan clones.

Should Shepard never recruit Garrus in  Mass Effect , he will still recognize them when they find him on Omega during Dossier: Archangel in Mass Effect 2 . He will no longer be an optional squadmate in either of the sequels and must be recruited each time.

Best Mission Order In Mass Effect 2

Quick links, prologue: joining cerberus, act 1: putting together your team, act 2 – part 1: finishing recruitment, act 2 – part 2: gaining loyalty, act 3: endgame.

For the most part, Mass Effect 2 is a linear RPG. However, the game does give you some freedom when it comes to mission order. Each act of the adventure has an abundance of quests to take on, and it doesn't matter which you do first or which you save for later.

Mass Effect 2: All Upgrade Locations

Yet, playing each mission in a specific order can improve a playthrough in various ways. For instance, if you complete quests in the optimal sequence, you lower the risk of losing characters by the end of the game. Plus, your narrative experience can be enhanced simply by doing certain missions at certain times. So, here is the order in which you should complete all of the main content.

Updated January 26, 2024 By Ben Jessey: You can play most of the Mass Effect 2 missions in any order you want. However, there is an optimal order that improves the narrative experience and keeps characters alive. We laid out that optimal order in this guide. And now, we've returned to the piece to make sure it's still accurate and easy to read.

During Mass Effect 2's prologue, you have no control over which missions you play . The sequence of events includes an attack on the Normandy, Shepard joining Cerberus, and a visit to Freedom's Progress.

The lack of freedom in the opening stages makes sense as the game slowly introduces you to its mechanics and sets up the story.

Mission Order:

Things start to open up once the prologue ends as the Illusive Man gives you multiple recruitment missions to do at your leisure . You also have a few other quests to keep you busy.

Optimal Mission Order:

After the Horizon quest, the Illusive Man points you toward three more people you should recruit. Plus, this is when loyalty missions start appearing, so make sure you're regularly talking to your teammates.

For the first part of this act, you can only do five quests before triggering the next Collector assignment.

You have plenty of freedom in the wake of the Collector Ship investigation as the game doesn't force you to start the next mission. In fact, you want to avoid initiating the Reaper IFF quest for quite some time .

Instead, the second part of Act 2 is about getting almost all of the loyalty missions done . And these quests are crucial because they help you keep everyone alive during the Suicide Mission .

Mass Effect 2: Should You Save The City Or The Spaceport?

Act 3 serves as the endgame , and it doesn't allow much time for side content. So, make sure that you've done everything before starting these quests .

  9. How did you handle the Garrus and Harkin encounter? : r/masseffect

The game explicitly tells you you can do this to help Kirrahe's team before you encounter them, and has both squadmates and Shep themselves explicitly call out they do it to help them, so it does kinda decide the reason for why Shepard does it. Not why you do it, but why Shepard does. 45. BlackMaskedBandit.
