Internet Geography

Now That’s What I Call Geography

Earlier in the week, I started thinking about songs that related to geography that could be used as a hook to help students remember geographical information or analyse lyrics to develop an understanding of place, processes and features. I reached out to the geography community and they came up trumps. A post on Facebook and a tweet on Twitter led to a flurry of suggestions of geography-related songs. What we’ve ended up with is Now that’s What I Call Geography, an eclectic mix of music from Iron Maiden to a track from the Little Mermaid and The Smiths to Aqua.

After several hours copying and pasting, I’ve collated the songs and you can view them below. If you have any suggestions for the playlist please contact us .

If you subscribe to Amazon Music use this link to access the playlist.

Geography Songs – Sing Around the World!

Looking for a way to teach geography in a fun and engaging way? How about via song? Geography Songs is a great way to help kids learn all things geography!

homework song geography

You know how, in secret societies, people recognize each other by a sign, a gesture, or a word?  Well, that’s how I used to feel about Geography Songs.

You’d just have to start, “North A-MER-i-ca,” and any homeschooler nearby would join in, “South A-MER-i-ca!”  That’s how we could tell who homeschooled.

I haven’t heard much about this CD lately, and that’s a pity because it’s one of the catchiest ways to learn basic geography facts.

In over thirty songs with accompanying outline maps, Kathy Troxel teaches names and locations of countries of the world, as well as oceans, planets, and states of the US. Some songs are just listings of names. Others also tell about the culture of an area.

homework song geography

What’s Included?

  • A music cd with thirty-three songs that teach names and locations of continents, oceans, planets and 225 countries.
  • An illustrated workbook that contains maps, lyrics, and famous landmarks.

The music is light, cheerful and catchy, occasionally even tying in with the culture of the countries in the song.  It remains pleasant even after hearing it hundreds of times…and that is important .

My children begged to listen to it. If children color the map while they are listening ( mine don’t like coloring ), they will learn the locations even more quickly.  In any case, this is a great basis for any geography study .

Our version is old but the CD has been newly updated and includes a large world map as well.

Purchase Geography Songs:

Purchase Here ==>> Geography Songs CD & Workbook There is also a set for States and Capitals! Purchase That Here ==>> States and Capitals Songs

PLUS if you go to Kathy Troxel’s Website you can purchase a Geography Songs 3 DVD Set that has 40 SONGS!

Includes 40 Geography Songs that teach names and locations of all the countries of the world, continents and oceans, Solar System, capitals, provinces and territories of Canada, states of Mexico, States and Capitals of the USA.

Annie Kate and her husband are the parents of five busy blessings, ages 15-25. Though inspired by classical and Charlotte Mason education, they have discovered that the best learning involves real life: music, cooking, dairy farming, nature walks, bee keeping, reading, judo, blogging, website development, writing, gardening, photography, learning retail, working with horses, and more. Annie Kate's goal is to inspire and equip her children to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, and mind, and to love their neighbors as themselves.

We love Geography Songs! I’ve been using it for our geography study this year with my kindergartener and preschooler. Even my three year old can sing the countries of Africa and much of Asia. A superb resource! And like you said, the songs are catchy without being annoying.

We bought our cassette so many years ago that some of the countries have changed since (we even lost a planet), so I guess we could stand to buy an update. But at least “California, Arizona, New Mexico…” is still current.

BTW, one of the only songs I never liked on GS was the Canada song! It probably wouldn’t matter if you lived somewhere else, but it hurts my brain to think of the provinces all scrambled up like that.

I also have to second these songs! My 4 year old girl positively LOVES them and asks to listen to them ALL THE TIME. It is funny to hear her absentmindedly singing the different songs at times throughout the day. And, yes, I have learned a lot, too! We like to look at a map of the area for a certain song and try to point to the countries (or states) as we sing them. It’s a fun game!

Great songs to use to bring different topics alive!

I often use different songs with my classes to engage them in a topic or to help them to remember key facts or processes. Below are a few links to my favourites. My ultimate favourite has to be Mr Parr who has created lots of different songs based on current pop songs. The pupils love these.

Here is his latest offering:

There are lots more I use - if you need any recommendations - please ask!

Happy listening!

Facebook

If you’re reading this then you want to learn geography! That makes me so very happy. I love geography and I love songwriting. When my homeschool co-op decided to memorize the countries of the world, they asked me to put all the countries into song. At that moment, Geography Songs for Everyone was born!

Since then, Geography Songs for Everyone is listened to around the world through Spotify, iTunes, Facebook Music, Pandora, and more!

Learn more about my project below. Happy listening and happy learning!

- Katrina Holland

How it works

There are other geography learning songs out there, but our co-op needed something better. Here’s what makes Geography Songs for Everyone special:

Easy Listening

Songs are musically inspired by each region, so they all sound different and engaging.

Songs are composed simply with only vocals and rhythm instruments so lyrics are clearly heard, understood and easy to sing.

Easy Learning

Each song contains only a small region, seven countries or less so the information is learned in smaller chunks.

Countries are sung in the order they appear on a map so students remember each country’s relative position.

Most songs contain fun geographical trivia to spark conversation and further study

Teacher rewrites rap song for geography lesson, kids go crazy (and learn)

Screengrab: Erica Buddington Twitter feed

Naysayers may assume pop culture perverts young minds, but a New York City educator proves otherwise.

Erica Buddington, a teacher at Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter Academy in Harlem, N.Y. (a school founded by Hip Hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and famed pedagogue Dr. Steve Perry), noticed her students had an affinity for the trending rap song  "Bodak Yellow."

Before class, they rapped the lyrics and tapped the beats on their desk.

She took that opportunity and ran with it. And the results are fantastic.

Buddington rewrote the lyrics to the Billboard Top 100 song and transformed it into a geography anthem.

The teacher gave her sixth grade class a handout of the song and a homework assignment that required them to learn the words over the weekend.

On the following Monday, her students were in full compliance.

The classroom energy was at a full 100,000 watts, as beautiful, amped up children charted locations of continents and oceans around the globe.

They rapped about latitude and longitude and hemisphere and climate zones with Hip Hop music as the backdrop.

"Said: You can know the globe if you wanted to 7 continents, 5 oceans and 4 hemispheres too... Got three climate zones: polar, temperate and tropical. And I north, south, west and east like my compass is cardinal. Hey, I don't guess, I know my longitude Said I don't guess, yeah I know my latitude If you see me with a map, ask me how I get to school I'm gon' point out the direction, ain't gon' give you attitude."

By the end of the day, the entire school was reciting the remixed version of Bodak Yellow .

Buddington tweeted the classroom session and posted the lyrics.

She later tweeted another clip of a student putting what he learned to work while his classmates rapped in the background.

"And we celebrate each other when we try our hardest," she said in the post.

Her teaching approach has gone viral and earned praise from social media and Cardi B, rapper of the original song.

Buddington's culturally relevant lesson plan has since been praised in numerous media outlets and by teachers, parents and students.

In interviews, Buddington noted the passing rate among her students on a standard map quiz increased from 60 percent to 92 percent, after she instituted her unique lesson plan.

Many of them want more (because duh)

Buddington is no stranger to performance art.

She is a poetry-slam champion and has appeared on Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam. She has also authored four books: Intention, Borders Apart, Of Micah and Men, F-Boy Literature.

Buddington also stays busy as the founder of Langston League , an organization that focuses on "literacy, infused with S.T.E.A.M.d. elements –science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and design.

From the looks of it, Buddington is gung-ho about meeting children where they are.

So what do you get when you mix Hip Hop music and a NYC classroom?

Learning curves.

And i am totally here for it., like all the moms.

15 Geography Games and Activities Your Students Will Love

Pass a globe, toss a bean bag, build with LEGO bricks and more!

Geography Games for Kids

Learning about the big wide world can be a lot of fun for students, and geography is the perfect subject for hands-on learning. These geography games and activities will introduce new concepts, broaden perspectives, and allow your students to practice valuable skills.

1. Geography Snap

Geography Snap

This fun game is a one minute speed test for kids to identify as many states as they can. To play, pull a labeled stick and mark the state off your map. If you pull a SNAP stick, though, you’ll have to erase your map and start again.

2. 20 Questions

The classic game of 20 questions can be a perfect fit in your geography study. First, have one student come up with a state, country, or continent. Then, allow students to ask a yes or no question, one at a time. For example: “Is this state in the north?”, “Is this state on the coast?”, “Was this state one of the original colonies?”, etc. The goal, of course, is to guess the correct answer in 20 questions or less.

3. Battle of the States

Battle of the States game with cards and categories

Kids will recognize this fun game as a version of the card game War. Download these free trading cards with colored illustrations of each state, along with interesting facts. To play, deal all of the cards out to two players, face down. Each player pulls the top card, keeping it to themself, and calls out a category (population, electoral votes, etc.). Each player reads off the appropriate number, and the player with the higher number keeps the cards.

4. Bean Bag Maps

This is a simple but fun way to review geography. Have a supply of small bean bags handy and a large map of the world and/or the U.S. posted on the wall. One at a time, ask a student to toss a bean bag at a site on the map, for instance, the Pacific Ocean, Mexico, or Colorado. If they make an accurate throw they get a point, and if they miss, they must tell you what they hit instead. Kids could play this in a small group or with a partner, taking turns calling out locations and tossing the bean bag. Or, you could use this activity for whole-class review.

5. LEGO Landmarks

LEGO landmarks for different locations

How fun is this? Students look at pictures of international landmarks and try to recreate them with LEGO bricks. Landmark flashcards can be found through Amazon, Etsy, Walmart and more. Or better yet, have students do research on the computer and make their own.

6. Fun with Flags

Flags strung across a wall as a geography activity

Flags are an important part of a nation’s identity, and learning about flags helps kids identify and remember places around the world. For this activity, ask each student to choose a country they are interested in. Have them do a bit of research and create a copy of that country’s flag on an 11×14 piece of construction paper. String all of the students’ flags to create a banner across your classroom to give it an international flair.

7. Geography Bingo

United States BINGO!

Have a little geography fun Bingo style and help your students recognize and remember the 50 states. Click on the link below for instructions, free downloadable Bingo cards and calling pieces.

8. Alphabet Game

This is a fun circle game that can help students memorize all fifty states. It’s perfect as a warm-up or as a geography review. (It also builds literacy skills.) The first student in the circle will say the name of a state. The next must name a state that begins with the last letter of the previous student’s state. For example: Student 1: California, Student 2: Arkansas, Student 3: South Carolina, etc. You can also play this game with countries. For example: Ireland/Denmark/Kazakhstan, etc.

9. World Atlas Scavenger Hunt

World Atlas Scavenger Hunt for Middle School showing a printed globe

Discover interesting facts about places around the world while learning how to navigate an atlas. This scavenger hunt for middle schoolers has 26 fun clues from (A – Z), all related to world geography.

10. Memory Game

Download these free state and state capital flashcards and make multiple copies. Create decks of twenty cards: 10 states plus 10 coordinating capitals. To play, students shuffle the deck, then lay each of the cards face-down. The goal is to flip over two cards, looking for a match. If the cards don’t match, they flip them back over. Play continues until all cards have been matched up.

11. Stack cups

Stackable Cups with different locations where students sort

These stacking cups are a great visual to help kids comprehend exactly where they live in the world. Each cup fits into the next, from home to city to state, all the way to the galaxy they live in. Download the free labels or make up your own.

Learn more: Undercover Classroom

12. Pass the Globe

Most kids love studying the globe. This circle activity is a geography version of hot potato. Have students sit in a circle, then turn on some music. Students will pass a globe around the circle until the music stops. When it does, the student holding the globe must identify the spot under their right thumb. Start the music again and play until everyone has had a turn. More than likely, students will learn the names of places they’ve never heard of before.

13. Create treasure hunts

Creating their own treasure hunt is a great way for kids to learn about important map skills. This blog explains the activity with a home map. Adapt it to fit in the classroom by having kids draw a map of their classroom or their school. Then, once everyone has finished their maps, have students partner up to find each other’s treasure.

14. Coordinates Game

Coordinate geography games with two students using a ruler

Learning about latitude and longitude is an important map skill. This game gives students practice finding locations on a map using coordinates. Make a list of world locations (or U.S. locations) using just coordinates. Pair students up and give them the list and a sheet of gold star stickers. Working together, they must find the location on the map and mark it with a gold star. When they have finished, give them an answer sheet to check their answers.

15. 50 States Song

What better way to learn the names of the states, in alphabetical order no less, than with a song? This catchy tune has been around for years and years, and once you learn it, you won’t forget it.
