2 . animal  matching card  games ., 3.   animal relay.

  • The players form two lines with equal numbers on each team.
  • The first player on each team is one animal, the second a different animal. (Have youth draw from a container for which animal they will be. #1’s are the same animal #2’s are the same animal #3 the same, etc.
  • On the word” go”, the first team members act like the animal they represent; they run, hop or crawl to a given place and back.
  • The following players then acts like their animals and so on… until one team is finished and all sitting down. Use animals such as kangaroos, bunnies, dogs, cats, etc.

4.  RUN RABBIT RUN

Half of the group are called foxes and the other half are named rabbits. Rabbits are standing behind a line at one end of the play area. (home) Foxes are scattered all over the gym.

Captain Rabbit leads his/her brood for a walk. The leader of the foxes says: “Run Rabbit Run!” All rabbits run trying to return to their home. All TAGGED rabbits become foxes. Continue until there are no “rabbits” left.

5. A WHAT?  (Only using things to do with animals)

  • Form a circle.
  • First player passes any object to the next person and says, “This is a dog bone.” The second says, “A what?”
  • The first repeats, “A dog bone.” The second says, “Oh”, and passes it to the third person saying, “This is a dog bone,”
  • Third says, “A what?” The second person then turns back to the first person and asks again, “A what?” Second tells third “a dog bone.”
  • It continues in this manner.
  • After the object reaches the fourth person, the first starts over again with a new animal related object. And chaos begins!

6.   WHO AM I?

Version#1: When the children come through the door, tape an animal or animal item/object to their backs.

They may ask each other “yes and no questions” about what they are. Explain that the first question they may want to ask is “Am I an animal or an object?”

At the end, each child takes a turn saying what they think they are. Suggestions: cow, pig, sheep, dog, horseshoe, hay, dog bone, etc…

WHO AM I? Version #2:

Before the game, cut pictures of animals out of old nature magazines. Try to use the pictures on the covers, because they are sturdier.

Then pin a picture with a safety pin to the back of each child’s T-shirt. They all  ask each other “yes or no questions”, such as “Do I swim in the ocean?” “Do I have feathers?” or “Do I live in the jungle?”

It’s also a good ice-breaker activity – if some of the kids don’t know each other very well.

7. ANIMAL BUDDIES

Is similar to  Who Am I ?  This time, whisper in each child’s ear a name of an animal . Tell them that other person that is the  same animal there is at least one l as they are .

Throughout the event they may ask each other yes and no questions to try to figure out who their “Animal Buddy” is.

At the end of the time tell everyone to go sit by who they think their partner is. Go over the clues with the kids until they figure it out and everyone is sitting next to the correct buddy.

8. MONKEY TAG

  • Scatter with three or four persons who are “It”.
  • All players run around. When they are tagged, they must lie on their backs, feet up in the air.

Randomly assign animal types to children (They pick them out of a container) As youth walk about the room,  they make their assigned animal sound; they have to find others that are making the same sound .

Two of each animal works well because the process of elimination will help those with an unusual interpretation of the animal noise.

13. FIND THE ANIMALS!

  • BEFORE your event — hide several farm animal toys ( check out this set of 60 farm animals ) or cards around the event area, yard, etc.

  • Then everyone sings: Doggy, Doggy, where’s your bone? Somebody’s stole it from your home. Guess who it might be.
  • The dog has three chances to guess who took it. if the dog guesses right, he gets to do it again. If he guesses wrong, then the child who has the bone gets a turn as the dog.

15. A DRAWING GAME: ANIMAL JUMBLE

  • Attach the sheet over the door to a room or large closet. Put the bags behind this.
  • At the end of the party, get behind the “pond” and tell the kids they’re going fishing.
  • One at a time, have the kids cast their line OVER the sheet.
  • Attach a goody bag to the clothespin and give the line a tug to let the child know when they’ve caught something.

  • Give one person on each team – the animal trainer – a plastic cup or bowl. To play:
  • Tell all the animals to sniff out the candy.
  • Everyone is allowed to look for the candy, but only the designated animal trainer for each team can scoop it up and put it in the team cup.
  • When someone finds a piece of candy, they have to stand next to it and make their animal noise until their team’s trainer comes over to grab it.

  • When someone gives the frozen person the “chicken”. They are brought back to life.
  • Use poly spot carpet squares as safety zones; these are the “hen houses.” Version #2: CHICKEN CACCIATORE

Homeschool Preschool

My daughter is an animal lover. It doesn’t matter what kind of animal it is… she’s going to love it. So, when we started our homeschool journey she chose to study animals for science. For three years straight!

Following her lead, we did lapbooks, read books, visited the zoo to see animals up close, and studied animals of all kinds.

While I started this site long after her preschool years, I know that most preschoolers love animals of some kind. So, these fun activities will help you follow your child’s lead as they dive in to learn more about animals.

Below, you’ll find an amazing collection of animal activities for preschoolers ! It contains crafts, printables, books, and more for young learners!

When you ask a toddler or preschooler what sorts of topics they would like to learn about, the answer is commonly some sort of animal. Can you blame them? There are so many to learn about!

Animals are an amazing topic to focus on because they are a large part of their natural world.

Whether your children interact with their pets , observes wild animals while on walks, or simply sees animals in books or movies, they are likely to be thinking about this topic often.

Playing veterinarian is a great way to build social skills while allowing their imagination to run somewhat unhindered. Having one child play vet gives them the ability to help others while allowing others to get creative with what is wrong with their “pets.”

Adopt A Pretend Pet

activities for preschoolers about animals

Pet adoption is another great social skill-building activity that also allows a fun yet guided imagination-based activity. Seeing how quickly and creatively they can “build” a pet for adoption is a fantastic way to get a look at who that child is on the inside.

activities for preschoolers about animals

Playing pet groomers can lead to a lot of fun interactions. It allows the child to think through a process while also letting them work on task focus and instruction following.

Build Animal Cages With Blocks

Use blocks to build animal cages of different shapes. Give instructions to build an oval animal cage, circle, square, etc. There is a fantastic level of imagination and interpretation that you can see from the simple task of building a “cage.”

Pet Themed Learning Activities For Preschoolers

Themed learning activities are a great way to get your preschoolers engaged and willing to participate. Most kiddos love animals, so these activities will be well received by your kiddos.

activities for preschoolers about animals

Pet bingo gives you the ability to help your little ones learn about different animals. While you can start with basic animal recognition, you can then move on to more advanced levels, such as animals with scales, shells, pointed ears, etc. It provides a fantastic way to have your children work on detail recognition instead of just simple object recognition.

Another fun idea would be to name each animal on the bingo sheet and then call out the names instead. That will make the children cross-reference different pieces of information to help them win.

Weiner Dog Name Puzzles

activities for preschoolers about animals

This activity helps kids with basic spelling. It gives them a fun foundation to learn letter recognition, name recognition, and basic reading skills while using their names and the names of their classmates to help them understand what they are seeing.

Pet Count and Clip Cards

activities for preschoolers about animals

If you are looking for a new way to help work on counting skills, this is a perfect solution. Using these great pet-related cards gives your little ones a great focal point to help them stay focused on the task. It also gives you a reusable resource to help your little ones build their counting skills!

Pet Themed Craft Activities For Preschoolers

Little ones love to craft and whether you are doing a simple coloring page or making a pet rock, they will have a blast!

Every child needs an outlet for their imagination, and a pet rock is the perfect one. Pet rocks are amazing because they provide so little foundation that the imagination has almost infinite directions that they can go.

Give them some basic supplies to design their pet and you’ll have anything from a cat to a monster! You may consider drawing an outline of an animal for your preschoolers and letting them paint it after.

Paper Plate Animals

Paper plates are one of the most versatile resources you can have in your craft box. They range from simple supply trays to the actual base of your craft. For this one, all you need is some colors of some sort and a pair of googly eyes to make a cute paper plate animal.

Pet Fish Activity

Once they are done with the coloring part, make sure they name it and come up with a fun little backstory to give their “pet” some character!

Puppy Headband

activities for preschoolers about animals

We all made headbands when we were little, and wore them with pride like crowns. The blog above gives instructions on how to create your own puppy headband, but why not use it as a template for other animals?

Just cut out some different shapes for the ears and nose/mouth and you have a perfect cat!

What preschooler doesn’t love food, especially snacks! These pet themed snacks are so adorable and fun to make.

I know these snacks will be a hit with your little ones!

Nutter Butter Puppy Pops

Nutter Butter cookies were and still are one of my favorites. This cute twist on the popular cookie will be a sure hit with everyone in the house, and your little ones will have a blast helping make them!

Kitty Cat Bagels

While we try to teach our little ones to not play with their food, sometimes we just can’t help it. Making these fun little cat bagels is a fun activity for the little ones to help with, and gives them a tasty reward after they are finished!

Pet Themed Sensory Activities For Preschoolers

Kiddos love doing sensory activities in general because they keep their hands and minds busy. Your littles will absolutely love these pet themed sensory activities!

Just about every single child loves to play in the water. This fun activity gives them the opportunity to do so, and also opens their imagination to let them build a scenario for how their “pets” got dirty.

Hide the Animals

activities for preschoolers about animals

Having your children play with this fun sensory activity is a great way to keep them busy and develop their motor skills. The scooping and poring of the rice is a simple yet entrancing activity that almost every toddler will enjoy. If you don’t have any small animals or toys to bury, just having them fill the muffin tin will work just as well!

Pet Themed Playdough Tray

activities for preschoolers about animals

Playdough is one of the most amazing sensory activity tools to use. Its versatility allows for a wide range of activities and will keep children happy for hours. Combine it with some other animal-themed cookie cutters or toys, and you have a perfect activity for your little animal lover.

Pet Themed Ring Toss

A game of ring toss is a fun time, regardless of who is playing. It is also a very customizable game. Instead of prizes, tape a picture of an animal to the pins/bottles and have your children act out whatever animal their ring lands on for a laughter-filled activity.

Pet themed activities are not only fun for little ones but also important. I love that there are so many options for fun pet themed activities for preschoolers.

  • Fleming, Denise (Author)

Watch the YouTube reading here .

2. Sing and Play “The Farmer in the Dell”

Sing and play the traditional circle/ carpet game “The Farmer in the Dell”.

Start with the regular lyrics:

The farmer in the dell The farmer in the dell Hi-ho, the derry-o The farmer in the dell

The farmer takes a wife The farmer takes a wife Hi-ho, the derry-o The farmer takes a wife

Then, for each verse, name a different farm animal.

Watch the game on YouTube .

3. Paint Farm Animal Tracks

Show children animal footprints in non-fiction books, online or in kids’ books such as Who Hides Here? Footprints on the Farm, written by Rachel Coverdale.

Who Hides Here?: Footprints on the Farm

  • Coverdale, Rachel (Author)

Set out low containers of paint for kids to dip plastic animal figurines’ feet, to then press onto construction paper for fun animal prints.

You could also cut sponges into familiar animal footprint shapes for them to dip into paint and then stamp onto paper.

4. Dramatic Play Based on Jan Brett’s Books

Read The Mitten and The Hat , which are both books written and illustrated by Jan Brett.

The Mitten & The Hat: Set of Two Paperback Books

  • 32 pages each

Kids imagine themselves living on a Scandinavian farm and meeting the various animals that could live there.

On Brett’s website for The Hat , find printable farm animal face masks for children to use while retelling the story or for making up their own tales.

Farm animal face masks for kids

5. Mud Play

Read or watch the readings of books themed around farm animals and mud, such as Mrs. Wishy-Washy or Mud Walk , both written by Joy Cowley.

In a water table or plastic tubs, set up some sand mixed with small amounts of water to form mud.

Add small plastic farm animals for playing in the mud .

For the children to “play in the mud,” have several soft brown blankets set out for rolling and wallowing on the floor while making farm animal noises.

6. Sing and Move to “Down on Grandpa’s Farm” by Raffi

Sing, make animal sounds and move along with Raffi’s song, “Down on Grandpa’s Farm.”

Use this video to see the real animals mentioned in the song!

7. Cow Painting

Look at pictures of various types of cows and chat about the similarities and differences.

Children discover that the skin of several types of cows mixes another colour with white, such as brown or black.

Using droppers or brushes, get kids to experiment with adding other colours to the white paper, making sheets of  “cow skin” or “cowhide.”

Those that are similar could possibly be grouped together in making large cutout cow murals for the wall.

8. Farm Animal Matching

Find pictures of adult and baby farm animals or print some and get kids to help cut around them and glue them onto index cards or poster board cut into squares.

When the glue is dry, they take turns or work as a group to match the farm animal babies with the full-grown adults.

Keys can be added to the backs of the cards for self-checking, such as numbers or images that match the pairs.

9. Birds on the Farm

Read books and look at pictures or videos of the various types of birds that live on farms around the world.

Discuss the similarities and differences:

  • Whether they fly
  • What they live in
  • What they eat
  • Why they often live on a farm

Look at and touch assorted types of seeds that birds can eat. These can be added to the sensory table or bins for scooping and pouring with small containers, shovels and scoops.

Connect this information to birds that live in the wild and set up a bird-feeding station outdoors for observation.

10. Farm Dress-Up

In the dramatic play area add plenty of farm-themed clothing and accessories to the bins:

  • Denim and bandanas for farmers
  • Stuffed farm animals
  • Fuzzy/furry dress-up clothing
  • Animal headband ears
  • Play farming tools like shovels, rakes and hoes

Let kids play dress-up to their hearts’ content!

Children dressed up in farm animal custumes

11. Catch the Piglets!

Blow up small pink balloons and give kids fly swatters.

The balloons are baby pigs that have escaped the barn, and the children must use only the fly swatters to push them back towards the “barn” made with a large cardboard box set on its side.

Can they get all the piglets back inside before the timer rings?

This is great for developing eye-hand coordination .

12. Rubber Duckie Water Play

With a permanent marker, add numbers 1-10 or letters of the alphabet to the bottoms of the ducks for some water play .

As they float in the water table or plastic bin, children pick up one at a time, naming aloud the numbers or letters written on the bottom.

Rubber duckie

Added challenges: can they find the number for their ages or all the letters for their first names?

This simple activity builds early maths skills .

13. Hen Nest Bean Bag Toss

For this bean bag activity , make several large hen nests out of straw, hay or raffia.

Standing a set distance away, children can try to toss the bean bags to land in the nests.

14. Cotton Ball Lambs

Making cute woolly sheep is a fun art activity that will develop fine motor skills .

Give kids plenty of cotton balls and liquid glue. They can glue the balls onto a background of construction paper and create woolly sheep.

Add googly eyes or colour with marker on several of the balls for eyes.

15. Name that Sound

Buy a CD of animal sounds, record them or listen to some farm animal sounds on YouTube .

Play them one at a time and see if kids can name them.

If they identify the animal correctly, they can then try to imitate how that animal moves.

16. Field Trip

Take children to visit a farm that has animals or to a petting zoo that includes typical farm-type animals.

They compare what they have seen in the books previously shared to seeing similar animals up close and in real life.

After the field trip, children can draw pictures of the animals they have observed and possibly write short, commonly associated words: cow, moo, hen and pig.

A unit about farm animals fits in well with community helpers and topics like production/consumption.

Many picture books address the foods and non-food (fibre) products that come from farm animals.

On the other hand, when exploring farm animals for preschoolers, adults can also introduce the ideas of vegan (plants-only) farming and farm animal sanctuaries that are growing in popularity to offer a safe haven for injured or rescued farm animals.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these preschool farm activities. I also have a collection of fun animal games for preschool kids , as well as more preschool theme ideas .

This activity strengthens memory recall, visual recognition, and knowledge of zoo animals.

animal art activities for preschoolers

1. Ladybug Craft

ladybug craft

Source: craftsyhacks.com

Grab toilet paper rolls, red construction paper– this is a sturdier paper option , a black marker, scissors, this hot glue pack , an old pair of black socks, and these googly eyes .

You can use a compass or a large-rimmed glass to make the wings.

Ball and push one sock into the toe of the other and then slip the whole thing over the tube while your little ones color polka dots on a sheet of paper.

After the polka dots get done, use your chosen utensil to make the circle.

Cut out the wings and attach them, followed by gluing the googly eyes and letting everything dry. Even older kids would enjoy this fun project.

If your kids loved this ladybug craft, they’ll love these  cute animal drawing ideas .

2. Paper Plate Piggie

paper plate piggie

Source: livinglifeandlearning.com

There are no great ideas easier than a paper plate craft with different animals, and one of our favorites to do is a little pig plate.

You’ll need pink tissue paper, black construction paper, paper plates, of course, glue, and scissors for these pig crafts.

This activity is a great way to practice fine motor skills for your preschooler in a fun way – have them cut squares of tissue paper while you work on the facial features and when everything’s finished, assemble it!

3. Fish Craft

fish craft

A tried and true favorite on the blog and easy peasy, check out the complete fish craft from a past post of mine.

All you need for the project: felt squares, popsicle sticks, and googly eyes. It’s an excellent activity for educational purposes, the life cycle of a fish, following step-by-step directions, and more.

4. Paper Plate Lion Craft

paper plate lion craft

Source: modernhomesteadmama.com

If the pig plate is a homerun idea in your house, here’s an alternative to the pig plate! We’re using watercolors for the lion plate– our favorite set , paper plates, a black crayon, and googly eyes.

Have your kid paint the bumpy outer part of the plate a light brown and the inner circle a bold yellow. Once it’s dried, glue on the eyes and draw a nose and mouth.

Your children will love these fun zoo animal crafts.

5. Fingerprint Glass Magnets

fingerprint glass magnets

Another project we’ve had so much success with is these glass magnets– the full tutorial here .

It’s a multi-step operation with step-by-step instructions that starts with the fingerprints of little hands and so much fun; we love this set of ink pads .

After the prints dry, animate them and use a high-quality pen to avoid smudging. Then take your gem, put an even coat of mod podge across the base, and place it squarely on the image.

You’ll know when they are dried because the glue will go clear. Kids of all ages will love these fun crafts.

6. Patriotic Eagle Craft

patriotic eagle craft

Source: jinxykids.com

This eagle is cute, easy to make with little ones, and helps practice fine motor skills and have a great time.

Using craft glue makes it safer for children, but feel free to use a hot glue gun too for these cute animal crafts.

You’ll need orange, brown, and yellow foam sheets for different body parts–cut these out together.

Once those get done, glue a brown pom to the feet, glue a white pompom to the brown one, and then attach the yellow beak, googly eyes, and brown wings.

7. Fish Printable Bookmarks

fish printable bookmarks

Source: in-our-spare-time.com

For a low-key project, try printing out these fish bookmarks . Once printed and cut, have the kids color them.

For longer-lasting or fancier results, laminate the free printable template once finished and maybe punch a hole in the top and add a tassel for the perfect time.

8. Handprint Chicken Art

handprint chicken art

Source: theinspirationedit.com

A great sensory activity or easy art project for younger kids, handprint animals are some of the easiest! Today, we’re talking chicken art!

Simply paint your child’s hand brown and apply it to the page (pre-color or use a blank page).

Once dry, your young children can fill in the chicken details–eyes, mouth, gizzard–and outline with black to really make the animal pop.

9. Painted Bumble Bee

painted bumble bee

Source: bunnysgarden.com

Talking to your young kids about bumble bees and their importance to our lives can be tricky, so painting them can help simplify the lesson. It is a great idea to paint them on rocks and put them in the garden.

Grab acrylic paints , mod podge, and a weatherproof spray if you paint them on rocks.

Talk to your kids about how bees help our plants grow, and place the stones in your garden beds or near any living plants. These easy projects doubles as lesson plans.

10. Owl Paper Bag Puppet

owl paper bag puppet

A kindred spirit to a paper plate project, paper bag activities are another simple and fun thing to create with children.

You’ll need glue, scissors, and black construction paper, but the other three colors can be up to the artist. These simple animal paper crafts are an excellent shape activity.

You’ll need four circles–two a little smaller and another pair just bigger than the first, a triangle for the nose, an oval for the belly, and two almond-shaped wings.

Glue everything to the side where the bottom of the bag is to complete the puppet.

Your kids will also love these fun crafts for 3-year olds !

11. Paper Mache Dino Bank

paper mache dino bank

Source: redtedart.com

A little complex in construction; feel free to make the requested dino yourself from a balloon, paper mache (our mix–1 part flour, two parts water), and newspaper.

The balloon gets reserved for the body, and the newspaper–many trials and errors here–for the other body parts.

Once the construction gets done, have the kids help you apply the strips of paper mache to the body.

After all is dry, this is where the kids come in–let them paint to their liking, and once everything is dry, cut a slot and a trap door, pop the balloon and remove.

12. Natural Art Animal Pictures

natural art animal pictures

Source: daisiesandpie.co.uk

Start with a nature walk collecting anything of the season that isn’t too delicate. Assemble your findings into an image and glue everything together–if a little fragile, attach it to a sturdy piece of paper.

13. Seashell Craft Dog Magnet

seashell craft dog magnet

As always, we want to protect the surface you’ll be working on since we’ll be working with paint and hot glue.

The best shells for this project are clam shells (for the face) and oyster shells (ears), and the lighter in weight, the better.

Paint the outside of the shell with the dog type of your choosing, paint the oyster shells a coordinating color, and glue them to the face. On the inside or back, hot glue a strong magnet and let dry entirely.

14. Paper Bag Cat Puppet

paper bag cat puppet

Source: simplyfullofdelight.com

Another bag craft is this cute cat one! Find a cat face online or cut out circles for eyes, triangles for ears, and a heart for a nose.

Glue everything onto the bottom of the bag, and once dry, have your kid draw in whiskers and color anything else they’d like.

15. Cardboard Dinosaur Feet

cardboard dinosaur feet

For an interactive project, you can play in–try these dino feet out! Grab cardstock or cardboard, hot glue, a writing utensil, scissors, paint, and anything you’d like to make scales or designs on the feet.

Trace around the little dino’s feet–taking note of length over width, so there isn’t slipping while romping around. Draw the base with enough space so the material can be flexible while in motion.

Make another set of tracing for the top of the foot, paint the top set of feet, and then glue everything together after the paint is dry. Cut out the foot space and let your little one roar!

16. Paper Plate Polar Bear

paper plate polar bear

Source: printablesfairy.com

A paper plate animal for the winter season is just what we need on a lowkey day in. For this polar bear craft grab some pink, white, and as well as black construction paper, glue, and scissors.

For the pink and black, we’ll cut two circles of each–black for the eyes and pink for the cheeks. Black, we’ll also need for the nose and the inner ears, white triangles for the ears, and a round oval for its snout.

Have extra paper plates? Why not try out these fun paper plate crafts !

17. Ladybug Templates

ladybug templates

Source: liltigers.net

Everyone loves a ladybug, and if you’re teaching your children about life cycles or nature, having a visual aid is always helpful. Print this page and enjoy the afternoon talking about bugs!

18. Toilet Paper Roll Cat Craft

toilet paper roll cat craft

Source: threekidsthreecatsandahusband.com

TP roll crafts are so easy! This cat will need your chosen construction paper, scissors, crayons, glue, and googly eyes.

If you’re using darker construction paper, I’d recommend using markers or cutting the details out of a different color paper.

Wrap the tube in the given color, and draw an oval for the head and two triangles for the ears. Draw the details on the face and attach everything before adding it to the tube.

Bonus–grab a pipe cleaner and add it to the backside for a tail.

19. Winnie the Pooh Craft

winnie the pooh craft

If your child loves Winnie the Pooh, grab a yellow paper plate or color it yellow. Cut out two yellow ears and attach them to the backside.

Either cut out his facial features with black construction paper or draw them in with a black crayon or marker.

20. Paper Plate Fish

paper plate fish

Source: honeyandlime.co

Another excellent plate option is making a fish! Let them take inspiration from famous fish like Nemo or Dory and have them color in the plate however they choose.

Add a googly eye, and take a small triangle out underneath the eye for the mouth. Add a fin and tail in the given color of the fish.

21. Snake Craft

snake craft

Source: mommyevolution.com

I love this craft because it is so customizable! Choose the color paper and the shiny objects used to create the scales on the snake, and it’s another great fine motor craft!

Draw a squiggly line as long as you’d like, and then mirror the line with another and connect the ends–to make the head and the tail.

After cutting the snake out, add the googly eyes, nostrils, and tongue (out of construction paper), and then add the sparkly scales.

22. Handprint Bunny Easter Craft

handprint bunny easter craft

This hand printed bunny cut-out is a unique craft to make Easter a little more special. This bunny sign is just the right size for the craft.

Paint the board white, and then paint your child’s hand and have them stamp directly onto the bunny. Once finished, it’s a sweet speckled bunny and a darling keepsake to bring out for many Easters to come.

Did your kids enjoy this craft? They might enjoy these other fun handprint crafts !

23. Safari Animal Coloring Pages

Are you talking about different biomes with your child? Here are two pages– one and two for animals that live on the safari.

Download, print, and enjoy!

24. Potato Stamp Butterfly Art

potato stamp butterfly art

Source: littleladoo.com

Printing art projects are so fun, easy, and each one is so unique! Small potatoes work best here–cut in half lengthwise and width, a mix of washable paints and toothpicks.

Take two-quarters of the potato, pat them dry, and put them from small end to small end to create a silhouette of a butterfly.

Mix a few paint colors onto a plate, dip the potato butterfly into the paint firmly, and then onto the page.

25. Frog Toilet Paper Roll Craft

frog toilet paper roll craft

Source: twokidsandacoupon.com

Grab a TP roll, construction paper, glue, scissors, and markers. Draw an oval-esque rectangle and two circles for the eyes.

Draw the frog’s face, eyes, and other details you’d like. Cut the legs, arms, and belly out (a different color than the frog) and attach everything to the tube.

26. Pig Paper Bag Puppet

pig paper bag puppet

For another sweet bag, try this pig! Grab a template online, or break out the pink construction paper and the white (for the eyes), scissors, glue, and crayons or markers.

After drawing or coloring the pig’s face, attach it and the ears to the bottom of the bag. Add a tail on the opposite side if desired.

27. Old Macdonald Farm Animal Crafts

This craft is a fun and beautiful project, perfect for your child or a gift your child can make for someone else. Use these wooden eggs , acrylic paint, paintbrush, paint pen, or permanent marker.

Help your kid draw the characters onto the eggs, let them paint them, and go back over with a marker to outline certain elements once dry.

Feel free to use construction paper for the ears or any other detailing you’d like to see. A layer of mod podge can help protect the eggs in the long run.

28. Paper Plate Caterpillars

paper plate caterpillar

Source: intheplayroom.co.uk

Easy and colorful, it’s a home run for everyone! Cut a paper plate in two along the arched edge, and with the inner remains, we’ll cut a circle to create the head.

Draw, color, and decorate the face and the body and attach the two. Add pipe cleaners after everything has dried.

29. Finger Puppet Origami Bird

finger puppet origami bird

You’ll need a square sheet of paper and any coloring utensils you’d like to use. Feel free to cut a square out of any paper if you don’t have the right shape.

Start by folding it in half to make a triangle and reopen it. Take one side of the page, fold it into the middle line (it won’t be an equal overlap), and do the same to the other side.

With both sides folded and a small square at the bottom, fold the whole thing in half to create a triangle. Next, you’ll look to fold the longest edge in half against itself to make a crease at the smaller end of the line.

At that crease, you’ll fold the more significant part of the triangle downward at a 90-degree angle. Then, with the larger piece’s overhang, you’ll tuck up and behind, creating the space where a finger can fit.

The remaining is a tiny part of the triangle–the tip gets tucked into the middle line, and if all goes well, you’re ready to decorate your bird!

30. Bee Printable

bee printable

Try pairing this printable with the rock painting activity from above. Or, if you’re kid likes bees, print out a couple of pages and color them together!

31. Tape Resist Clown Fish

tape resist clown fish

Straightforward and with a great-looking result, a little prior work goes into this project, cutting out a fish outline and adding a few pieces of tape along the body.

Once the fish is cut out and taped, hand over the outline to your child to paint any way they wish.

When all is dry, remove the tape to reveal the negative space, add a googly eye, and cut out a small triangle for the mouth.

32. Dinosaur Coloring Pages

We love this site for free resources and printables. These dino pages are tons of fun and will please any prehistoric lover.

33. Watercolour Butterfly Craft

Unique yet effortless, these butterflies are a great craft. You’ll need these clothespins , coffee filters, and washable markers.

Start by coloring your coffee filters with as many colors as you’d like, and when ready, spritz water onto them so it creates a watercolor effect–let dry.

Have your kid color the pin(s) black while you wait for the filters to dry. Pinch the filter’s center, work the filter in the opening, and fluff the wings out to resemble a butterfly.

34. Paper Plate Baby Farm Animals

Source: messforless.net

Get the whole barnyard together, or pick and choose some of your favorite farm animals for this craft!

The way to make a baby version is to cut a smaller circle that is the central part of the plate and fill in the details around that specific creature.

Choose from baby pigs, cows, a sheep craft, chicks, and more. Add googly eyes, ears, a smile, and ligaments to get the complete picture!

35. Funny Bunny Craft

funny bunny craft

Grab these goofy foam bunnies , popsicle sticks, googly eyes, and any fun add-ons you and your child would enjoy. Draw silly faces, and then glue on the eyes and any accessories.

Once fully dry, glue the stick onto the back and get silly with these bunnies!

36. Aquarium Craft

aquarium craft

Source: tinydale.com

Think diorama, but as a fish tank! Grab a tissue box and cut the top off, and let your child color a page to add as the background and anything to the scene they’re creating.

After they’ve finished adding to the box, use saran wrap around the top and secure it with a rubber band, staple, or any other item that may hold the plastic in place.

37. Walrus Arctic Animal Craft

walrus arctic animal craft

Source: simpleeverydaymom.com

Perfect for the coming winter, grab snowflake stickers , brown, dark blue, white, and black paper for this craft.

You may have to craft the walrus and water parts yourself, but let your kid assemble the scene once cut. Add the dark blue water first, the walrus, and then the snowflake stickers.

38. Farm Animal Sticks

farm animal sticks

Source: craftsbyamanda.com

An alternative to the previous farm animal crafts, these sticks are fun. You’ll need jumbo popsicle sticks, paint, brushes, googly eyes, and a paint marker.

Let your child paint the colors of the sticks for the given animals. You may need to help them with the detailing, but get creative–use buttons or other small items to make each one.

39. Handprint Cow

handprint cow

Source: abcsofliteracy.com

If you’re looking for something simpler, do handprint versions of all the animals. We tried it first with a cow–grab white, black, brown, pink, and yellow paper.

Trace your child’s hand on the white paper, and while cutting out black spots for the body, cut a rounded triangle for the head of the cow and attach the two.

Make the nose out of brown paper, the horns yellow, pink for the inner ears, and white for the outer ears. Assemble the cow and let everything dry. After, add a tail and the details of the face.

40. Paper Plate Whale

paper plate whals

The result will be slightly different for this plate craft, but the beginning is the same. Color the whole plate blue and add a smile and googly eye halfway down the plate.

Cut the bottom of the plate off below the smile line–this will be the tail fin. Glue an active blowhole (water spout) at the top of the head and add a bit of blue construction paper for the tail.

At the end of the tail, attach the bottom part of the plate as the fin.

41. Foam Cup Farm Animals

Source: kidsactivitiesblog.com

For this art project, you’ll need these foam cups and pipe cleaners. Choose the animal or animals you’d like to do and paint the cup the coordinating color.

Once dry, return and work on the bigger and smaller details of the animal together. Add pipe cleaners as ears, tails, etc.

42. Beluga Whale Toilet Paper Roll Craft

beluga whale toilet paper roll craft

Paint your tube white, and let dry. Cut out a whitetail, fins, and some blue water to poke out of the top of the tube.

After everything is dry, glue all the pieces and draw the whale’s face.

43. Shark Headband

shark headband

The main elements of this craft are supplying an almond-shaped piece of construction paper and a band big enough to go around your child’s head. Let them color their shark, or grab a free template online.

Staple the shark to the band and then measure how the band fits your child’s head and staple while off their head.

44. Recycled Plastic Egg Whale Craft

Have old plastic eggs sitting around? Add a googly eye, draw a smile, cut out a tail and water spout and secure them on the whale!

45. Seashell Fish Craft

If you have a collection of shells and are looking for a project, look no further. Paint their backs, then glue the smaller ones onto the bigger ones and googly eyes.

46. Coffee Filter Watercolour Fish

Like the butterfly, color the filter with markers and spritz it with water to make everything bleed together. When dried, scrunch a side down to make a tail, secure it with a pipe cleaner, and glue a googly eye.

47. Slinky Dog Craft

Create all the pieces of the dog’s head, tail, and bum and cut them out. Cut two strips of 1-inch paper, glue them crossing at a 90-degree angle, and then accordion fold them.

Glue one end to the head and the other side of the body to the bum.

48. Monkey Cardboard Tube Craft

monkey cardboard tube craft

Cut ears and a nose from brown paper and attach them to the tube. Glue googly eyes on top and draw in any remaining details.

49. Toilet Roll Farm Animal Crafts

Decide which animal to create, and then grab construction paper, googly eyes, yarn, or any other detailed item you’ll need. Draw or color any pieces before gluing.

50. Paper Plate Puffin

activities for preschoolers about animals

Grab orange, blue, and yellow paper, a paper plate, and some markers. Color the outer ring of the backside of the plate black.

Cut an orange triangle and a strip of blue and yellow for the nose–attach. Draw the eye and let everything dry.

51. Paper Plate Submarine Craft

paper plate submarine craft

This is a multi-step project–have your child color an underwater scene while you cut out the middle of a second paper plate.

When the drawing is done, set aside and have your little one paint the second plate yellow. After the plates are set, staple the two together so it’s like a submarine window’s view of the ocean.

10 Animal Activities for Preschoolers

  • January 13, 2022

If you’ve ever been around children at a farm, zoo or aquarium, you know they are absolutely fascinated by animals. We’re sure you’ve seen the awe-struck look on a child’s face: eyes wide and mouth agape as they stare in wonderment at a new or unique creature.

They’re intrigued by the interesting sounds animals make, the unpredictable behavior they witness and more than anything the exciting and mysterious qualities animals possess. After all, other than family pets, they likely don’t come into contact with these fascinating beings on a regular basis.

And while not everyone can take a field trip to a farm or zoo, reading about them and adding projects where animals are the focus can be just as exciting and attention-grabbing for your kiddos. That’s why incorporating animal activities for preschoolers into your curriculum can be such a powerful tool.

When you introduce animals and animal activities into the classroom, you achieve a number of benefits.

For example, you can stimulate your preschoolers’ senses by posing questions like, “do you think this animal has a smell and if so what’s it like?” or asking what a particular animal’s coat looks and feels like.

Or perhaps you use animals as a way to teach your preschoolers to explore the world around them. For instance, you can take your class on an imaginary safari halfway around the world.

If you do have the ability to bring in or visit live animals, you can use these experiences to help teach empathy and kindness.

And if nothing else, by including animals as part of your lesson plan, e.g. using farm animal activities and toys for counting and sorting games, the lessons will stick much better.

If you’ve never incorporated animal activities for preschoolers into your lesson plan, we’re sharing 10 of our favorites below.

1.)  A whale of an activity: All you need for this outdoor science activity from KC Edventures is some sidewalk chalk, a tape measure and space! Simply draw the outline of a whale on the ground and let your children see just how big these creatures are. You can also choose a variety of other animals and do the same. If you’re able, take a photo of each child next to the outline and then show them how they compare.

2.)  Comparing animal tracks : This simple activity from Teach Preschool combines animals and art. You simply take plastic animals, dip their feet in paint and press them on paper. Then, you have your preschoolers compare and contrast the different tracks.

3.)  Counting using the farm animal activities for preschoolers  worksheet: If you’re short on time, and looking for a fun counting activity, try these free farm animal activities for preschoolers worksheets from Preschool Learn & Play. This is an easy, no-prep activity that works on counting and number tracing.

4.)  Handprint fish counting and color matching : Grace, Giggles & Naptime brings us a fun and easy way to work on counting and color matching. You begin by having your preschoolers create handprint fish. Then they add matching colored Fruit Loop “gills.” If you’re worried about using sugary cereal, you can easily substitute other small craft items.

5.)  LEGO Duplo animals and the alphabet: This project from Adventures in a Box has it all: animals, building, literacy and more. You can also incorporate color matching, but sometimes it’s more fun to let your preschoolers’ creativity flow by using all the colors.

6.)  Paper plate lion safari craft: This fun and quick activity from The Keeper of Memories is perfect for helping develop fine motor skills in kiddos. That’s why it ranks high among our favorite zoo animal activities for preschoolers.

7.)  Paper plate sheep: This is one of our favorite farm animal activities for preschoolers. You only need five items for this easy arts and crafts project from Housing a Forest. It can also be a great science activity that explores different textures by substituting cotton balls for the shredded paper.

8.)  Sensory habitats: This hands-on activity from The Pinay Homeschooler lets children explore different sensations as they learn about various animal habitats. For example, you can fill a tub or tray with sand and then place “desert” animal toys in their natural habitat. As an added bonus, you can work on creativity by having your students make up stories about these animals.

9.)  Walk like an animal: This is another simple activity that requires little to no prep or materials. All you have to do is gather your children and instruct them to move like whatever animal you call out. It’s a wonderful physical activity that works on creativity and large motor skills.

10.)  Zoo math with animal crackers: This idea from Motherhood on a Dime is another one of our favorite zoo animal activities for preschoolers. It’s a great way to explore math and it’s delicious to boot!

How to Plan Zoo Activities for Preschoolers

Table of Contents

Introduction

Have you ever thought about bringing the zoo to your classroom?

If you haven’t, I can tell you from experience that zoo activities for preschoolers are an amazing opportunity to engage and inspire kids.

Setting up a zoo-themed classroom and including animal-related activities can produce a vibrant learning space that will attract the attention of your preschoolers and improve their educational experience.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the many benefits of zoo activities for preschoolers. I’ll also provide you with practical tips and engaging activities to create a fun and educational animal-themed learning experience.

So, if you’re ready to inspire your young learners to explore and discover the wonders of the animal kingdom, join me on this exciting journey as we discover the endless possibilities of a zoo-themed classroom!

Why Bringing the Zoo to the Classroom is Such a Great Idea

One of the greatest advantages of bringing the zoo to the classroom is that it creates a hands-on learning experience that goes far beyond what a textbook can offer.

The children will be excited to engage in the different zoo animal activities you have planned for them, making your classroom a more interesting and enjoyable place to be.

Moreover, incorporating a zoo-themed classroom environment can help stimulate children’s imagination and encourage creativity.

You’ll also get an opportunity to inspire your young learners, create a fun and exciting learning environment, and develop important skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

The Beauty of Learning About Animals at a Young Age

‌Young children are naturally curious and eager to explore the world around them, so learning about different zoo animals early can be a truly beautiful and rewarding experience for them.

Zoo activities for preschoolers can ignite children’s curiosity and inspire a love for learning that will last a lifetime.

Additionally, not only is learning about zoo animals fascinating and so much fun for children, but it also helps preschoolers develop critical skills such as observation, critical thinking, problem-solving, empathy, and compassion.

Zoo theme and other zoo activities for preschoolers can also teach kids about the natural world and how it works.

Setting Up Your Zoo Classroom

Setting up your classroom with a zoo theme is a wonderful and fun project that can spark your kids’ imagination and curiosity.

With a few simple tips, you can transform your classroom into a local zoo filled with amazing animals, taking your pupils into an entirely different learning environment.

To set up your zoo classroom, first, think about the layout of your classroom.

You want to create a space that is inviting and engaging, with plenty of opportunities for exploration.

Think about dividing the space into sections for various activities, such as a reading nook with books on zoo animals, a scientific station for zoo animals’ experiments and observations, and an art station for zoo animal crafts and creative expression.

Next, consider what furnishings, images, contests, and fun zoo-themed activities can assist in creating an immersive experience.

Think about hanging zoo animal printables or murals, using natural elements like plants or pebbles to provide a sensory experience, or using plush zoo animals or zoo animal toys for hands-on learning.

Although setting up your zoo classroom might take a little more work, the benefits are unlimited.

Tips for Creating a Zoo Themed Classroom Environment

Here are some tips I find very helpful when creating a zoo theme classroom environment:

Decorate your classroom with animal-themed decorations such as zoo crafts, zoo posters and pictures, and figurines to create a vibrant atmosphere.

You can also add a touch of greenery by incorporating live plants that are safe for children.

Make sure to have plenty of books and resources on animals and the zoo, including zoo printables, non-fiction books, picture books, and storybooks.

These resources can keep kids busy and provide them with a wealth of knowledge about the amazing animals in the zoo and their natural environments.

Create learning centers with zoo animal-related activities.

For instance, a zoo science center could feature animal habitats, while a zoo writing center could have animal-themed writing prompts.

Use zoo theme rewards and incentives to keep your preschoolers motivated .

For example, you could have a “zoo keeper of the week” award or reward them with zoo animal stickers or pencils, zoo animal masks, zoo animal puzzles, or small toy zoo animals.

Engage your preschoolers in practical zoo activities that let them investigate ideas about zoo animals.

For instance, to promote exploration and sensory development, you may make a sensory bin containing animal figurines, sand, or water.

While your kids are carrying out their engaging zoo activities, make sure they are safe and properly supervised, especially if you intend to bring live animals into the classroom.

There must be enough adults there to watch over the kids and make sure they are obeying rules because younger kids need more supervision than older kids do.

Zoo-Themed Art Activities

‌Zoo-Themed Art Activities are an amazing way to engage preschoolers while teaching them about animals and the zoo.

The following 5 art activity ideas are exciting and easy to set up. They will captivate your little ones and provide hours of fun and learning!

Animal Features

Provide your preschoolers with models of various animals and encourage their investigations by posing questions such as:

How many toes are there?

What does the skin look like? Is it bumpy? Scaly? Smooth?

When the animal walks, what parts of its body touch the ground?

Does the animal have nails? Hooves? Claws?

Does the animal have ears? Eyes? Tail? Nose?

Is the animal a wild animal or a domestic animal?

Zoo Animal Movement and Exercise

Fun physical activities that help children learn about how animals move.

‌Learning about animals doesn’t have to be limited to science lessons and books.

Young children can learn about the natural world by incorporating animal themes into physical exercises.

This way, they can learn about animal habits, habitats, and adaptations in a dynamic and engaging way. Plus, they will also help strengthen their fine motor skills .

Here are some suggestions for integrating learning concepts into animal-themed movement activities:

1. Animal Charades

Have children act out different animal movements and behaviors while their classmates try to guess which zoo animal they are imitating.

Kids can use this zoo dramatic play to learn about animal names and the various ways that animals move and act.

2. Habitat Scavenger Hunt

Hide pictures of different animal habitats in or near the playground or classroom.

Hide plastic zoo animals in another part of the classroom or playground.

Have the children match the pictures of the habitats where animals live and the plastic zoo animals.

This activity helps kids learn about the various habitats that zoo animals dwell in, as well as the adaptations those animals have made to live there.

3. Animal Yoga

Use animal-themed yoga poses to teach children about different animal movements and behaviors.

For example, the “cat-cow” pose can teach kids about how cats stretch their backs, and the “downward dog” can teach them about how dogs stretch their legs.

4. Animal Relay Race

Set up an obstacle course with various zoo animal motions such as kangaroo jumping, crocodile crawling, or snake slithering.

Divide children into teams and have them race through the course. This activity can help them learn about different zoo animal movements and adaptations.

5. Storytelling Circle

Gather children in a circle and have them take turns telling a story about their favorite zoo animal. Each child can add a sentence or two to the story, creating a fun and collaborative storytelling experience.

Well, that’s a wrap! I hope you’ve enjoyed learning about all the fun and interesting ways to teach young children about the amazing animals at the zoo.

By using different approaches–from sensory art projects to science experiments and reading/storytelling activities, you will never run out of opportunities to make learning about animals exciting and memorable for preschoolers.

Whether you’re a teacher or a parent, I hope you’ll feel inspired to try out some of these zoo activities with the little ones in your life.

Go out there and inspire a love of animals and nature in the next generation!

I’ll be here waiting to read how your zoo activities for preschoolers went.

Arm yourself with knowledge on how animals adapt during the winter with these animals in winter science facts!

How Animals Adapt to Survive During the Winter

Animals have different ways of adapting and surviving during the winter months. Share these facts with your class while doing animals in winter preschool activities.

Here are the most common methods that animals use to survive the harsh winter months.

Hibernate: Some animals, like bears and groundhogs, hibernate during the winter. They go into a deep sleep and use very little energy. This helps them survive when food is scarce and the weather is cold.

Migrate: Many birds and some animals, like butterflies and whales, migrate to warmer places during the winter. They fly or swim to areas where they can find food and avoid the cold.

Grow Thick Fur or Feathers: Some animals grow thicker fur or feathers in the winter. This extra layer of insulation helps keep them warm in the cold weather.

Find Shelter: Animals like squirrels and rabbits find shelter in burrows or nests. They create cozy homes where they can stay warm and safe from predators.

Store Food: Some animals, like chipmunks and beavers, gather extra food in the fall and store it for the winter. They have special hiding spots to keep their food from freezing.

preschool stem challenges

Change Colors: Some animals, like the Arctic fox, change the color of their fur to blend in with the snowy landscape. This camouflage helps them hide from predators and sneak up on prey.

Slow Down: Cold-blooded animals like frogs and turtles become less active in the winter. They move very slowly or even stop moving altogether to conserve energy.

Eat Snow: Some animals, like deer and rabbits, eat snow to stay hydrated when water sources are frozen. They can melt the snow in their warm bodies to drink.

Team Up: Animals like penguins huddle together in large groups to stay warm. By staying close, they share body heat and protect each other from the cold.

Winter Animal Survival Facts

Here are some fascinating winter animal facts that preschoolers will love!

Much like our preschoolers dressing up in faux fur to stay warm during our winter exploration, the Arctic fox changes its fur color to match the changing seasons. In the summer, its coat becomes a lush brown or gray to blend in with the tundra, camouflaging against the rocky landscape.

Ever wonder how birds stay warm in winter? Birds fluff up their feathers to create insulating layers of air, providing natural warmth. It’s like wearing a cozy winter jacket, but they’ve got it built-in!

Even fish in frozen lakes have a nifty trick to survive winter. They enter a state of “torpor,” slowing down their metabolism to conserve energy. Some even have a built-in antifreeze-like substance in their blood to prevent ice crystals from forming.

Preschoolers can learn everything about how animals survive the winter with these what do animals do in the winter activities!

Monarch butterflies embark on an incredible winter migration journey each year. They travel thousands of miles to reach warmer climates in Mexico and South America.

Snowshoe hares are nature’s quick-change artists. In winter, their fur turns white to blend in with the snowy landscape, while in warmer months, it changes to brown to match the forest floor.

Black bears aren’t true hibernators, but they enter a state of torpor during winter. However, black bears can still “sleepwalk” during this time, covering short distances while remaining in a deep slumber.

Take a digital expedition of animals in winter using videos and other digital learning tools to that transport students to the icy landscapes where polar bears roam and penguins waddle.

Invite preschoolers to create their own winter animal habitats for an artistic twist. Using a mix of recycled materials and craft supplies, they can build a miniature world where animals thrive in the snow.

Preschoolers can try their hand at engineering by constructing mini igloos using marshmallows and toothpicks, exploring the architectural brilliance behind these snow shelters.

Organize a snowflake counting activity to infuse a bit of mathematics into the mix. Cut out paper snowflakes of varying sizes and have the students arrange them numerically.

The Nintendo Switch has several choices of games that allow parents and kids to play together, and these are the best options.

  • Nintendo Switch's family-friendly games make it ideal for parents & kids to enjoy together, fostering bonding moments.

  • Third-party support & exclusive titles make the Switch a great platform for families to have a blast gaming together.

The Nintendo Switch is the perfect console for parents and kids to play together thanks in large part to the huge range of family-friendly games available. Outside of that, the Switch is built for party-style gaming with motion controls and multiple controllers coming as standard. Not only is it great for families to play together, but it's also a solid choice for children alone; the Switch's portability allows them to stay occupied on long journeys or when waiting for appointments.

13 Best Nintendo Switch Games For Young Kids (Across Multiple Genres)

Not every Nintendo Switch game is suitable for kids, of course, and many of those that are aren't challenging or engaging enough for adults to fully enjoy. It's a fine line for developers to walk, but several of them have managed to create the perfect product that parents and their children can both enjoy together .

Updated on February 24, 2024, by Ritwik Mitra: The Nintendo Switch may be on its last legs right now, but that shouldn't take away from the console's allure in the slightest. Most people would argue that this console, out of all the other platforms available right now, features a ridiculously high number of exclusives that are a blast to engage with in their own right. Along with this, the fact that Nintendo opened the doors for third-party support means that there are a ton of amazing games that parents and kids can enjoy together to have a great time.

19 Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Supports 4-player local play.

Bowser confronting Mario and friends over the Wonder Flower

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a game that some people wrote off as nothing more than a run-of-the-mill 2.5D platformer, with some people feeling like it simply wouldn't do enough after the disappointment players faced with the other games in the series. In the eyes of many, these games didn't live up to the legacy of the Mario franchise.

So, fans were glad to see that Super Mario Bros. Wonder innovated the series formula in a way that pleased many. From the incredible animation work to the Wonder Seeds and how they changed every stage in new and interesting ways, it's easy to see why the charm of Super Mario Bros. Wonder makes it the perfect game for a family to enjoy together.

The frenetic action of Runbow continues to be engaging long after its release, with its simple yet compelling gameplay loop making it the perfect party game. Of course, that doesn't mean that parents and their kids can't have a fun time competing against each other as long as everything is done in good spirits.

Runbow 's quick-paced action forces players to adapt on the fly and use all their abilities to gain as many victories as possible. No matter who wins, it's only a given that a group of players will be more than entertained after this game draws to a close.

Supports 6-player local play.

Boomerang Fu

Boomerang Fu may seem like a cute game, but it doesn't take too long for players to realize just how action-packed this title really is. A single mistake can be deadly, which is why players must use a combination of short and long-range attacks to take out the opposition and rack up as many points as possible.

Most Chaotic Multiplayer Games

To make rounds more engaging, players can attain a wealth of powers to turn the tide of battle and shift things in their favor. It's amazing just how competitive this game can get, but the charming aesthetic of Boomerang Fu means that things never get too overbearing. It's a near-perfect game for parents and their kids to get into, especially once a few rounds are done and everyone is on the same skill level.

16 Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Supports 4-player local play (2-player for bowser's fury).

Levels in Bowser's Fury merge seamlessly with each other, almost feeling like a mini open-world game where objectives could be tackled in any order.

This additional mode along with Super Mario 3D World can both be played with another player, although the original game's content is more suited for co-op. Regardless, both friends and family can have a great time tackling the many enemies in this title.

Mario Party makes for a great time no matter what title players check out, and Mario Party Superstars is no exception to this rule. This chapter in the Mario series may not be groundbreaking in any way, but it is still worth checking out for fans of unique party games.

Suffice it to say, a family can make their game night pretty special with this great title. It does the classic things that everyone expects from Mario Party , making for a wholesome experience that never ceases to be entertaining.

Nintendo Switch Sports

Many people feel like Nintendo Switch Sports has royally dropped the ball in terms of being an engaging Switch game, especially with this title being hyped to the moon and back since it would continue the legacy of Wii Sports . The title is nowhere near as great as its beloved predecessor, with the post-launch support for this title being woeful.

While these disappointments should be addressed, there's no denying that Nintendo Switch Sports can still make for a great time as players try their hardest to beat their fellow gamers and win as many games as possible. Children and their parents can get into the competitive spirit without getting too aggressive. At least, that's what a parent would hope, but emotions can run high during closely fought games.

Super Mario Party is a multiplayer game designed to be enjoyed by players of all ages. The game features a variety of mini-games that are easy to pick up and play but challenging enough to keep players engaged.

Players can roll a variety of dice and move around a board, trying to collect the most stars. The mini-games range from button-mashing challenges to more strategic situations that require players to work together. The game can be played with up to four players, making it a great option for families to play together.

12 Splatoon 3

Supports 4-player online play.

Splatoon 3 Nintendo

Splatoon 3 is another game that's perfect for families. The game is a third-person shooter that features colorful, cartoonish characters known as Inklings. In the game, players compete in 4v4 multiplayer matches where the objective is to cover the most territory with ink.

The game is easy to pick up and play, but there's also a lot of depth to the gameplay, making it fun for players of all skill levels. The game also features a single-player campaign that's a great introduction to the game's mechanics, allowing both kids and parents to pick up the basics before either teaming up or working against each other in these fun and colorful battles.

11 Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Supports 2-player local play.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a puzzle game that's perfect for kids and parents who love solving brain teasers together. The game features Captain Toad, a character from the Super Mario universe, who must navigate through meticulous levels that almost feel like virtual dioramas.

8 GameCube Games That Nintendo Should Port To The Switch

The game's puzzles are cleverly designed, and they require players to use their spatial reasoning skills to find hidden pathways and secrets. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker also features a co-op mode that allows two players to play together, and those who loved these sections in Super Mario 3D World will be more than happy with what this title has to offer .

10 Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The Animal Crossing series has been a fan-favorite for generations, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons is another stellar example of wholesome gaming . It's a popular choice among kids because the gameplay loop is relatively simple but surprisingly addictive at the same time. It's easy to understand, and with a little guidance from parents, kids can easily build the island of their dreams.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has events at different points of the year, too, so even if it's put down for a few months, it can be picked back up again during the holidays or Easter for a new experience.

9 Luigi's Mansion 3

Gooigi and Luigi in Luigi’s Mansion 3

Luigi's Mansion 3

Luigi's Mansion 3 is easily one of the best family Switch games ever made, with combat that is simple enough for even the youngest gamers to understand and succeed at. The puzzle element of the game is where it shines, hitting the ideal point where a child could complete it but might need help with the more difficult bosses .

The downside is that couch co-op only becomes available part-way through the game, but this is also when the puzzles become more difficult, and kids could easily get that far without a parent available in-game.

8 Lego City Undercover

Lego City Undercover generic gameplay image of the protagonist in front of a road

Lego City Undercover

There are a ton of different Lego games available on Nintendo Switch, but most of them are connected to popular franchises like Batman , Harry Potter , or Star Wars . They're almost all fantastic games, but they do require a knowledge of the universe they're set in to appreciate some of the humor involved.

The Best Nintendo Open World Games

Lego City Undercover is a great open-world game in a fresh setting that allows anyone to fully enjoy the quirks of the Lego franchise. It's genuinely one of the best Lego games ever made, too.

7 Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition

Rayman and friends beating up an enemy on the Rayman Legends cover art

Rayman Legends

Rayman is one of the classic platformers and a franchise has been incredibly popular since it began in 1995 with one of the hardest children's games ever. Rayman Legends was the fifth mainline entry to the series that was first released on the Wii U but was ported over to the Nintendo Switch due to its popularity.

Rayman Legends allows up to four players at a time, and the amount of content is truly astounding. With different characters to choose from and well over a hundred different levels available, there's a lot to do together in Rayman Legends .

6 Kirby And The Forgotten Land

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Kirby is one of the most iconic characters in Nintendo history, and the franchise has delivered some fantastic games over the years. Kirby and the Forgotten Land breathed new life into the series, becoming the best-selling entry and one of the highest-rated of all time.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a great platform game with a lot of variation in gameplay thanks to Kirby's classic copy ability. A second player can join after the initial tutorial is completed, although they will not have access to the copy ability.

5 Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee! & Pikachu!

pokemon let's go eevee smiling against grassy background

Pokemon Let's Go

The Pokemon franchise has been beloved by kids since the 1990s, and a great number of its early players are parents today. Some of them might have had their first introduction to the series with the original Pokemon Yellow , which has been remade for Nintendo Switch as Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee! and Let's Go, Pikachu!

Pokemon Let's Go also allows multiplayer, and while the second player can't do much, they can still assist in battle, and the use of the Pokeball Plus is something that plenty of kids loved when the game was released.

4 Mario Golf: Super Rush

Peach hitting a backspin shot in Mario Golf Super Rush

Mario Golf: Super Rush

Mario Golf: Super Rush is one of the best sports games available on Nintendo Switch, and the ability to use motion controls is something kids often enjoy. While kids might end up losing interest in a traditional golf game, Mario Golf: Super Rush encourages players to run from shot to shot and drastically increases the pace of gameplay.

Mario and Tiger Woods

10 Best Golf Games Of All Time, Ranked

Mario sports games are fun for the whole family, and even though they are inherently competitive, the cartoonish atmosphere and non-combative nature of golf take a lot of the edge off that for kids.

3 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario in Kart drifting next to Bowser and Luigi on Mario Kart course

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is often ranked by fans as the best first-party sports game available on Nintendo Switch and for good reason. It has a ton of different characters, tracks, and seemingly endless combinations of kart setups that can make every session feel wildly different.

With racing and different battling options available, Mario Kart 8 pits everyone head-to-head in chaotic sessions. With more damaging items going to players further behind, the game helps to level the playing field by making things harder for whoever is in the lead.

2 Overcooked 1 & 2

three people and cat in chef's hats holding tomato and knife under dog and onion king from overcooked

Overcooked is a fantastic indie game with a simple gameplay loop that gets progressively more difficult as the game progresses, and Overcooked 2 offers more of the same. It's worth noting, though, that both of the Overcooked games are among the hardest co-op games ever , not because of the complexity but because of the amount of frustration they can cause.

Overcooked is a fun choice for parents and their kids to play together, but the adults will need extreme patience when things start to go wrong, and they definitely will.

1 Super Mario Odyssey

Mario and Ship in Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey is often regarded by fans as one the best games available on Nintendo Switch, and it offers a great way to get kids involved without them feeling stressed from losing. While the first player takes charge of Mario, the second will play as Cappy, the sentient and invulnerable hat that accompanies him throughout the game.

Super Mario Odyssey makes good use of HD Rumble and allows gamers of all ages to fight their way through plenty of exciting and challenging levels, just like any classic Super Mario game would.
