8th Grade Math

Some students entering eighth grade are ready to begin algebra while others are not. The way to tell is to consider a student’s current math abilities.

In order to be successful in algebra, students should already have a strong foundation in basic math facts , including place value, fractions, decimals, and percentages. They should understand positive and negative numbers and be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them. Students should be familiar with roots and radicals, additive and multiplicative inverses, order of operations, and the associative, commutative, and distributive properties.

If your eighth grade student has not mastered these topics, instead of moving into algebra, consider these alternative eighth grade math programs:

Math-U-See Pre-Algebra

  • Saxon Math 8/7
  • Saxon Math Algebra ½

Eighth Grade Math Curriculum

Math for 8th graders is not a subject where you'll want to wing it. You’ll want a trusted curriculum to guide the way, cover everything your child needs, and teach math in a logically sequential order.

Each option below has everything that you need for an entire school year of eighth grade math instruction.

Worksheets for Eighth Grade Math

Whether your student uses worksheets, workbooks, written practice problems, or online app exercises, practice is essential at any level of math learning. Eighth grade is no exception!

These two workbooks provide exercise worksheets on math for 8th graders.

Worksheets in Eighth Grade Math Curriculum

  • Math-U-See includes a student workbook with both practice and review/application worksheets for each lesson. Students complete only as many problems as necessary to prove mastery of the lesson. See pages 7-10 here for eighth grade math worksheets .
  • Saxon uses a textbook only. So a Saxon student copies problems to notebook paper and works them there instead of in a workbook. Basically, the student creates their own eighth grade math worksheets.

8th Grade Math Lessons

Math-U-See includes video lessons (both DVD and streamable), so you know exactly how to teach each lesson. Also there is a printed Instruction Manual with more help for teaching the math lessons.

  • Download a lesson from Math-U-See Algebra 1 here .
  • Watch the video below for a demonstration of a Math-U-See Algebra 1 lesson.

Saxon Math Homeschool has lessons in the text and are designed to be used independently by the student. There are video lessons available on the DIVE into Math CDs which walk your student through the math.

8th Grade Math Charts of Formulas for Reference

Download, save, and print the 8th Grade Mathematics Reference Sheet to keep these key formulas handy.

8th Grade Geometric Formulas

Although the publisher claims they can be a stand alone math program, Sonlight considers Life of Fred books a supplement to enrich a more comprehensive math curriculum (such as Math-U-See or Saxon below). A student without a good foundation in fractions, decimals, percents, and pre-algebra can use Life of Fred to build the skills they will need in algebra.

Eighth Grade Math Standards

Math standards are set by state departments of education. But they are typically easy to find online. Simply search [state] 8th grade math standards to find your state’s particular guidance.

41 states have opted to use Common Core Standards for math . You can read the Common Core Grade 8 Standards here . In grade 8, the focus is linear algebra and linear functions.

For math curriculum that meets Common Core standards, opt for one of these programs:

  • Math-U-See (K-12th grade)
  • Saxon Math Homeschool (K-12th grade)

Please note that while these programs cover the standards, they are presented in a slightly different order than prescribed in Common Core. So a certain topic may be assigned to 2nd grade in Common Core but is covered in 3rd or 1st grade in a certain curriculum. If Common Core Standards are important to you, simply remember that as long as you stick with the same program over many years, your child will eventually cover all of the concepts.

Eighth Grade Math State Tests

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law on December 10, 2015 as an updated version of the 2002 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. This act requires states to test students in grades 3-8 annually in math and language arts.

States can set their own standards for these tests, but they are required to be “challenging.” Many states have opted to use Common Core standards. Since each state is different, it’s best to go directly to the particular state department of education website for information about your state’s eighth grade math test. Begin your search here at the U.S. Department of Education’s map.

Achieve.org offers data about the various state mandated tests to measure math mastery. Read their math policy report here . Algebra 1 is a key math marker, and thus many states give students an end of course test in high school on that particular topic.

Eighth Grade Math Vocabulary

Here’s a list of key vocabulary for eighth grade math. Any good eighth grade math curriculum will teach students the meanings and applications of these terms.

  • cartesian coordinates
  • linear equation
  • quadratic equation
  • substitution
  • exponents
  • scientific notation
  • polynomials
  • coefficient
  • rational numbers
  • irrational numbers

8th grade common core aligned learning objectives & standards:.

Learning objectives:

In Grade 8, instructional time should focus on three critical areas: (1) deriving and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations;

(2) understanding the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships;

(3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity , and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

a. Conceptual skills

  • 8th graders utilize linear equations and systems of linear equations to represent, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. They acknowledge equations as a scaffolding concept for proportions (y/x = m or y = mx) as special linear equations (y = mx + b), and understand the meaning of each variable.
  • Learners display a firm understanding of linear equations by using it to create a quantifiable relationship between two quantities in bivariate data (such as arm span vs. height for students in a classroom).
  • Interpreting the trend of the linear model in the context of the data so that learners can express it as a relationship between the two quantities in question and predict the trends of the components of the relationship (such as slope and y-intercept) in terms of the situation.
  • They acquire the concept of a function as a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output and a relationship where one quantity determines another.
  • Learners extend their ideas of distance and angles , how they behave under translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations . As well as the ideas about congruence and similarity to describe and analyze two-dimensional figures and to solve problems.
  • They get familiarized with the basic concepts of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse, and can discuss why the Pythagorean Theorem holds, for example, by decomposing a square in two different ways.

b. Procedural skills

  • Learners carefully select and efficiently carry out ways to solve linear equations in one variable. Also, make use of different equality properties to create the concept of logical equivalence and conserve the solutions of the original equation.
  • They solve systems of two linear equations in two variables and connect the systems to pairs of lines in the plane. At the same time they describe the nature of the solution and the graph created.
  • They can translate among representations and partial representations of functions (noting that tabular and graphical representations may be partial representations), and they describe how aspects of the function are reflected in the different representations.
  • Learners illustrate that the sum of the angles in a triangle is the angle formed by a straight line, and that various configurations of lines give rise to similar triangles because of the angles created when a transversal cuts parallel lines .
  • They apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances between points on the coordinate plane, to find lengths, and to analyze polygons.
  • They complete their geometry learned concepts by working on volume to solve problems involving cones, cylinders, and spheres.

c. Life skills

  • Learners deal with more applications of mathematics in their lives with grasped concepts and procedures from learning linear equations, functions, and Pythagorean Theorem.
  • Linear equations and its graph can solve linear relationships of two variables such as the connection of demand and supply of goods in respect to its price value, the weight-height interconnection, amount of gasoline and number of miles reached, etc.
  • Functions, likewise, are used to illustrate input-output relationships. It can explain trends of values — whether increasing and decreasing; predict future values — population of a certain town, number of bacteria in a petri dish for a period of time.
  • By learning Pythagorean Theorem, 8th graders can estimate and calculate distance of two points or locations. They will learn that the shortest distance to reach another point is by walking, running, or driving in a diagonal direction.

8th Grade Online Math Worksheets

According to the Common Core Standards, in Grade 8, instructional time should focus on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

8th Grade Domains

If you know a particular Common Core Domain that you'd like to practice, you can drill down to it here.

  • Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers.
  • Work with radicals and integer exponents.
  • Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
  • Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
  • Define, evaluate, and compare functions.
  • Use functions to model relationships between quantities.
  • Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software.
  • Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem.
  • Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.
  • Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.

8th Grade Math Worksheets (Grade 8 - For Ages 13 to 14)

Beginning of the school year.

These worksheets are building off of last year's skills. They are part of the 8th grade curriculum, but they are usual learned in one shot. In our experience it is because they are very concrete skills that don't need much explanation.

  • Compare Exponents - Have students compare the end value of these exponents.
  • Function Tables - Input the variables into the equations and see what comes out.
  • Math Operations and Reasoning - Every problem is missing three to four operators. Make each equation true.
  • Surface Area - You are given 2 to 3 dimensions or measures of a rectangular prism and asked to find all the others. Sometime math has a cool power about it!
  • Circle the Irrational Numbers - If you can write a number as a fraction or simple ratio, it's rational. Take a quick glance at these specimens and determine if they are rational.
  • Operations with Exponents - We take exponents out for a walk and throw them into 2 and 3 step problems.
  • Scientific Notation - Meeting up with our friend times ten to the exponent. Write each number using scientific notation then move on to standard format. Pay attention to number 3. What's up with that one?
  • Venn Diagrams - We always knew that Venn Diagrams had a huge place in the Language Arts classroom, but they do the same thing when organizing data. Venn Diagrams should be used in the math classroom just as much.

Midyear Problems

These problems actually take more time to understand and may take two or three passes to really catch on.

  • Evaluate Expressions - This is a quick plug and chug activity to test student skills.
  • Writing Expressions - Convert number sentences to expressions. A really good skill to have.
  • Rewriting Fraction Equations - Solve for the variable in each case. Please note there are two- three step problems in the batch.
  • Order of Operations - Remember good ole' PEMDAS for this one. There are three steps max for each one.
  • Surface Area - You will also be asked to find other measurements of length.
  • Determine the Slope of a Line - You will work off of points and actual lines on cooridinate graphs.

Advanced Skills

These are the skills that not everyone can grasp in just a few times going over it. These also happen to be the skills that many students have trouble with on standard tests.

  • The Truth of Inequalities - Determine the truth value for ever inequality you come across. A simple T or F will do.
  • Probability as a Fraction - Determine the probability of every event in the form of a fraction.
  • Solve Simultaneous Linear Equations - This is always the point in algebra where kids say "What the heck is that?" Make sure they master this skill before moving on, it's critical.
  • Monomial, Binomial, and Polynomial Operations - We take these sets and throw them through various operations. We concentrate mostly on products and quotients here.
  • Graphing Linear Inequalities - These are the baby steps to full on graphing inequalities. At this point we are just looking for a directional line and point.
  • Logarithms - We focus on the conversion and calculations with logs and log form.
  • Using Pythagorean Theorem - We really give the Pythagorean Theorem a work out. First, determine if you have a 90 degree angle in the triangle. Second, find the length of a side and measurement all using the Theorem.
  • Midpoints and Equations of Straight Lines - We give you two points on the path of a line. We then ask to find the midpoint of those two points on the line and the equation of said line. Who knew lines had such a personality?

What Do Students Learn in the 8th Grade Math?

You can make math a treat for everyone who chooses to engage in it. Many children don't enjoy Math as it gets more complex through the years. 8th Grade is particularly challenging as it remains the difference between middle and high school. Thus, it's necessary that as a teacher, you're on par with all that you need to teach your student in 8th Grade. This way, their transition into high school is much easier.

What Math Should a Student in 8th Grade Already Know?

A student in 8th Grade should already have some idea about operation, algebra, and geometry. They should also have spatial and number senses. The 8th Grade students you teach should already know something about the representation of numbers in Standard Form. They should also know about numerical representation in the expanded and scientific notification. One of the important topics that they should be aware of is surrounding ratios and rates. 8th Grade is meant to expound on these concepts, but general awareness and concepts are necessary for these students.

Identification of ratios and rates is also necessary. The students should know how they will multiply and divide with positive and negative rational numbers. Topics of finding the perimeter and area of 2D figures are also essential. They must be aware of the process of plotting graphs and isolating quadrants within these graphs.

Finally, they should also know about the concept of probability and how to calculate the probability of dependent and independent events.

Topics Covered

8th Grade Math is all about the combination of new and old topics. You may have to conduct a fair amount of revision before delving into the newer topics. When students return from the summer break, they will have quite the brain fog. Thus, it's better to start with topics they are vaguely aware of, such as ratio and proportion. It's wise to start with something they can use daily as it helps them define the concept's applicability.

The next topic would involve number systems which involve the scientific notation of the numbers. There is also the distinction between rational and irrational numbers that students must know. Negative and positive numbers also help decide a certain number's absolute value.

Next, the topic involves the comparison of scientific notations to further cement what a scientific notation is. Standard arithmetic is also helpful with these scientific notations. Thus, it's necessary to know the concepts in these topics and how to carry them out.

8th Graders are also terribly focused on real numbers. 8th grade is the last time you can inform them about math fundamentals before they head off to high school. Thus, it would be best if you taught them to convert fractions to decimals and vice versa. Determining the roots of these numbers is also essential. They would also have to know the properties of these real numbers to identify them, so there's a fair bit of theoretical knowledge involved.

8th Grade is a step up from Seventh Grade; therefore, it comes with more complicated expressions and equations. Calculating the subject of the formula and other more complicated expressions is an integral portion of the syllabus. You need to inform your students about further elaboration on inequalities and substitution.

Many seventh-grade topics, like the Pythagorean theorems, transformations, and geometry, are much more advanced. These topics are cycled back, and new concepts are introduced alongside them. The students learn how to analyze equations and identify their solutions.

Students will also learn a fair bit about geometry and polygons, along with the proportional relationships and transformations that help establish regular shapes. Students will also identify congruency and similarity in triangles to calculate sides and angles within a pair of similar and congruent triangles.

Geometry is not only confined to that of two-dimensional shapes, and students have to learn the geometry used for three-dimensional shapes, which involves concepts of surface area and volume. The syllabus also includes learning about regular and irregular polygons and prisms.

Graphing is a significant topic in 8th Grade. The students must learn about inequalities, equations, and other expressions and how to present them on a graph. They must also learn how to calculate the slope or gradient of a set of values to determine a line's equation. They also have to learn about the applications of linear inequalities.

Graphing also involves finding linear relationships, such as finding x and y-intercepts and calculating functions. One of the central concepts that the students must know about is the y = mx + b concept, which is necessary for calculating equations.

Functions, Probability, and Statistics are three of the most outstanding and complex concepts in 8th Grade. However, they are also the ones that are likely to be the most practically used. Functions involve graphical representation, and probability trees are a simple way to explain probability to students. Statistics involve breaking down data in terms of the mean, median, and mode. Most students find statistics quite a fun chapter, but it narrows down to how you teach it.

Is It a Challenging Year?

8th Grade Math can be pretty challenging for those students who don't practice or pay attention. For such students, you must afford some extra care. There are many new concepts that most 8th graders have to grapple with, such as geometry and algebraic manipulation. 8th-grade math is also particularly challenging because it introduces many real-life problems for the students.

Students will learn about money and interest, which will serve them quite well in the coming years. 8th Grade also focuses on word problems and disguised math problems. Applying these word problems can also help students in their practical life. The rules are increasingly tricky in 8th-grade math. The percentages are now greater than 100, and the pressure to compete is all present.

Final Thoughts

8th Grade Math need not be complicated if teachers engage with the students. Math involves connection to the brain as any other subject does. However, there are different ways to pique an 8th grader's interest, and once one finds a way to do that, 8th grade Math can be quite straightforward.

Our 8th-Grade Curriculum

Mathematics.

algebra textbook for 8th-grade

For 8th-grade math, we are sticking to our favorite curriculum, Math-U-See . This year the boys are taking Algebra which covers the following topics:

  • Absolute Value
  • Adding and Subtracting Polynomials
  • Cartesian Coordinates
  • Coin Problems
  • Consecutive Integers
  • Equation of a Line
  • Exponents and Square Roots
  • Factoring Polynomials
  • Fractional Exponents
  • Graphing a Line: Inequalities, Parallel, and Perpendicular Lines
  • Metric Conversions
  • Multiplying and Dividing Polynomials
  • Order of Operations
  • Slope-Intercept Formula
  • Solving for an Unknown
  • Solving Simultaneous Equations
  • Unit and Square Unit Multipliers

This year’s workbook is a little different than the ones from previous years in that it has 35 chapters instead of 30. However, there are only two practice sheets per chapter as opposed to 3 making up for these extra chapters.

In the post, How to Use Math-U-See in Your Homeschool , I wrote about how to schedule these worksheets and tests using the 30-chapter textbooks but you can still use the same strategy for this year’s curriculum.

Language Arts/Writing for 8th-grade

english writing and grammar book for 8th-grade

We prefer BJU Press’ English curriculum and so I have ordered the English 8 workbooks, the teacher’s edition, tests, and keys. This curriculum covers grammar/usage and has writing assignments for 8th-grade level students.

If I don’t like a particular writing assignment, I will either modify it or come up with another writing assignment related to other subjects like history, math, or science.

U.S. History

A history of us by joy hakim.

history book for 8th-grade

For the past five years, we have covered world history for our history component which covered some parts of U.S. history. So, this year I want us to concentrate more on U.S. history.

I saw some reviews on this particular curriculum and many talked about it being boring. However, I find it to be thorough and honest .

Too often I read historical summaries of our country and have to remove the sugar-coating or expand on some snippets for my boys.

I have, so far, skimmed some of the chapters in this 11-book volume set and I like the extra facts she provides in the margins and what has to be thousands of pictures.

I believe there is at least one picture and/or map on every page. Tests are sold separately and cover unit topics.

pin image for 8th grade homeschool resources, schedule, and lesson plans post

Volumes 1-10 begin with America’s prehistory and end with the election of President Donald Trump. I was able to schedule volumes 1 – 5 this year and will cover 6-10 next year.

The 11th volume is a sourcebook that contains documents, court cases, presidential addresses, etc. that have shaped our country.

Elemental Science – Biology for the Logic Stage

science books

Homeschool science curriculums can be very expensive. This is why I was so excited when I found Elemental Science . Not only do they provide a very hands-on curriculum but their prices are reasonable.

For middle schoolers, they provide four different science “categories”: Biology, Earth Science & Astronomy, Chemistry, and Physics. I have started on Biology but hope to fit in Earth Science & Astronomy later in the year.

I do suggest checking out Amazon and/or the Christian Bookstore for some of their supplementary reading books at lower prices. For the “Biology for the Logic Stage” curriculum, the following are recommended:

  • The Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia
  • The Usborne Science Encyclopedia

One other thing I especially liked was that they also provide all the materials you need for your lab experiments .

Yes, I could have bought more than half the stuff that was in the box, but this meant having to buy more than what I needed and also more work looking for certain items.

Last year, I tried finding seeds for an experiment. Well, it was January and I couldn’t find a simple packet of seeds. Their box also comes with a preserved frog for dissection. Try finding that in Home Depot! This alone has Josh excited about science; Jack, not so much.

materials for lab experiments

I have gone through their student guide and teacher’s edition and love the layout of the lessons. They even provide two types of lesson plans, one for those who want to teach science 5 days a week and another set for 2 days a week.

We were able to finish Biology early so I added the edition below.

Elemental Science – Earth Science & Astronomy for the Logic Stage

We started this curriculum in March and managed to finish the first unit. We will continue with this curriculum in August.

Even though this series is for middle schoolers, I will continue it through their first couple of years of high school. Much of the material is review and so we are able to get through the units very quickly.

Periodic Table

books about the periodic table elements

We started our study of the elements last year and will continue it through our 8th-grade year. We cover one element a week which I schedule on Fridays. The books and resources we use for this study are:

  • The Intriguing Story of the Elements by Jack Challoner
  • The Periodic Table by Adrian Dingle
  • The Elements by Theodore Gray
  • Photographic Cards of the Elements by Theodore Gray
  • Productive Homeschooling’s Notebooking Pages to write up their summaries

spanish curriculum books

This year we are sticking to BJU Press’ Spanish 1 curriculum. We did very well with it. The boys are grasping the language more and more.

This curriculum has 12 chapters with 3 to 4 lessons in each. We did six chapters last year and will finish the other six this year.

I think going slow and doing all the exercises provided is what has helped the boys with their Spanish.

The only gripe I’ve had with this curriculum is that they do not provide lesson plans (although it states that they do) and this curriculum is very outdated especially when it comes to the cultural studies sections.

set of classical literature books

Last year, I supplied a list of books that I was expecting us to go through. However, some books were very long and so we only covered half of what I listed. So for 8th grade, I hope to finish that list with the following:

  • Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
  • Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell

Shakespeare

  • The Tempest

The books you see pictured above are Easton Press books. They are a bit pricey so I have provided links to cheaper versions on Amazon to fit your budget. But don’t forget that you can also borrow them from your local public library.

Additional Resources

We use Homeschool in the Woods Record of Time for creating our timelines . We’ve had these timeline books for five years now and I can tell you that there is not one bit of wear or tear in these pages.

The figures you see below come from their Collection of Historical Timeline Figures CD .

timeline book

We use Post-It’s 3 x3 Full Adhesive Notes for entering our historical figures and events in our timelines. This way, if we have to remove a figure/event to make room for another, it won’t tear or destroy our pages like glue or tape can.

More Resources

Below are additional resources we use in our homeschool:

  • American Student Heritage Dictionary and Thesaurus
  • Algebra DVD from MathUSee-contains lessons by the author
  • Spanish DVD from BJU Press Spanish 1 Curriculum-contains activities for speaking Spanish
  • The University of Chicago Spanish-English Dictionary

Hi i’m liesl.

Liesl HomeschoolDen

Do you believe education can be exciting, inspiring, and full of joy? We do too! I love the quote by William Butler Yeats, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." It's about getting the kids involved, engaged, and fired up about learning (while juggling the rest of life too!)

A bit about me: I have my Master's from Brown University. I have more than 20 years of teaching experience. I was a high school teacher for many years both in the U.S. and internationally and also taught for the University of Maryland before leaving to homeschool my 3 wonderful kids.
