The importance of time-telling skills in grade 4.

Time-telling skills are important in Grade 4 and essential to everyday life. Children in grade 4 are at an age where they are starting to become more independent and should have a good understanding of how to tell time. Not only will it help them to be more punctual, but it will also help them to manage their time better.

Also, time-telling is a crucial aspect of mathematics, so kids need a solid foundation to build upon as they progress through their education.

In grade 4, students will typically learn how to read analog and digital clocks, understand the concept of time intervals, and calculate elapsed time. They will also learn to solve word problems involving time, requiring them to apply their knowledge practically.

These skills will be built upon and refined in later grades, making it important for children to understand time-telling at this stage.

The grade 4 time-telling curriculum will vary depending on the school and state. However, some common topics will be covered. These include:

• Telling time on analog clocks (hours, half-hours, and quarter-hours)
• Telling time on digital clocks (24-hour and 12-hour format)
• Understanding the concept of time intervals (e.g., one hour, half an hour, 15 minutes)
• Calculating elapsed time (finding the difference between two times)
• Solving word problems involving time

Children need a solid understanding of these topics before moving on to more advanced concepts in later grades.

## 5 Activities to help teach telling time

Worksheets are just one of many ways to teach telling time in an engaging way. Below, we have more activities to help you teach telling time in a way your class will remember!

## 1. What time is it?

Credit: The Little Big Book Club

Find a template for a blank watch and print off enough for your entire class. Next, make a custom time on each watch and record the time it says on a master sheet.

In class, hand out each watch to your students and let them decorate them how they want. Then cut out the watches and tape them to your students’ wrists.

Students then go around the class asking each other, “What time is it?”

Then they record the time on each of their classmate’s watches. At the end of class, go over the times with your students or mark them on your own.

## 2. The human clock game

Credit: Scholastic

Prepare two piles of paper, each with numbers 1-12 printed on a different sheet along with an additional two blank pieces of paper.

Next, split your class into two groups. Line each group by a pile of paper near an empty space and then give them a time and a countdown. On go, students grab a sheet of paper. If they get a number they become that number on the clock and if they get a blank sheet they become one of the clock hands.

The first group to correctly make a clock with the correct time wins the round!

## 3. I have [blank], who has [blank]?

For this activity, make a flashcard for each student in your class and one for yourself to begin the game. Each card will have a time written on it followed by a question that asks who has another time.

The trick is, the question at the end of the flashcard will only give hints to the next time, but won’t specify what the time is. Students will have to think critically before reading out their card.

An example of a card is, “I have 3:34, who has 18 minutes after 6?”

## 4. Rock around the clock

Credit: What The Teacher Wants

Give students a sheet of paper with a blank digital and analog clock on it. Then play some music and have them dance around the class, similar to musical chairs.

When the music stops, students go to the nearest desk and write a random time in the digital clock. Then start playing the music again.

When the music stops this time, students go to the nearest desk and must draw hands on the analog clock to match the time on the digital clock.

Then erase the sheets and start over again!

## 5. Kinesthetic learning activity

For this activity, get a hula hoop and put sticky notes around it.ach note is labeled with a number from 1-12 to make it look like a clock.

Then get a student to hold the hula hoop and tell them a time you would like them to show you. Your student then uses their arms as the clock hands to demonstrate the time. This activity is perfect for kinesthetic learners.

One of the first activities that people mostly do when they first open their eyes at the break of a new day, is to take a look at a clock and plan the day ahead. The most fundamental ability that every human being requires on a daily basis is the ability to tell the time. From determining time, students eventually evolve into adults who can learn to manage time, and effort, eventually leading to being the most productive versions of themselves. Students will be able to establish a connection between arithmetic and the real world by completing fourth-grade time worksheets. ...Read More Read Less

## Choose Math Worksheets by Grade

Choose math worksheets by topic, grade 4 time worksheets.

The 4th grade time worksheets are mostly concerned with different ways to calculate time over lengthy periods, such as an hour or an hour and a half. The students are first introduced to many types of clocks in grade 1. In third grade, students will learn to calculate time to the closest minute, both inside and between hours. In grade 4 the students are asked to convert hours to minutes and seconds and the other way around. Students convert across different measures of time and they are taught to apply these conversions to different contexts.

• Time Worksheets (Easy)

Here, students will begin by resolving simple conversion problems. The majority of the worksheet's questions will be simple to comprehend and solve. The main aim is to familiarise the student’s minds with the basic conversions.

• Time Worksheets (Medium)

This time worksheet for first grade will aid students in developing a more comprehensive understanding of how conversions can be applied. This section will involve questions where students need to convert days to seconds; in other words, the conversions move across the different units of time without the intermediary steps. Simple application-based questions are also explored.

• Time Worksheets (Hard)

Word problems and other application-based questions are present in the more challenging version of fourth-grade time worksheets, and they can only be answered by a student who is already familiar with the easy and medium levels of the worksheets. The tasks in this worksheet are more challenging than those in the previous ones since they call for applying the information to a variety of scenarios.

## Measurement Worksheet PDFs

Grade 4 time worksheets are divided into two types: interactive worksheets and printable worksheets. The printable worksheets taps into the age-old, tried and tested method of solving questions using pen and paper. The conventional pen-and-paper approach is a tried-and-true technique that makes use of several brain functions and gets students ready for some of the crucial exams they will eventually take. These grade four time worksheets can help kids get used to the problem-solving approach that is taught in classrooms. However, online and interactive worksheets add a practical element to the learning process, as their name suggests. The questions here will be of various forms and styles, and the students will answer them with a time limit. These interactive worksheets are only available online and the questions are specifically designed to enrich and challenge the intellectual faculties of the students.

## What benefits are there to finishing fourth-grade time worksheets?

Determining the time and also the application of the same concept across different contexts is a skill that can be useful in higher grades. Prior to going on to more complex concepts, students must completely understand the concept of time. To achieve this level of comprehension, students must continually practice a large number of questions. The worksheets available at BYJU’S Math are designed to make it simple for students to improve their comprehension of time.

## How can students quickly master converting time from one unit to another?

If you practice it frequently, converting time becomes quicker as students practice the different types of questions provided in the grade 4 time worksheets. Children get the chance to practice questions while fully comprehending concepts with the help of fourth-grade time worksheets from BYJU’S Math. BYJU’S Math provides the best materials for students, enabling them to quickly learn concepts in math.

## Why are grades 1, 3 and 4 made to cover the concept of time?

A student needs to be familiar with how to tell the time. In first grade, students frequently calculate time using hourly and half-hour increments. Students will fully comprehend how to read time from an analog clock by the end of third grade as they are introduced to quarterly as well as smaller increments. In fourth grade, the worksheets mostly focus on converting time into different units related to time. Applications of conversion are also covered in questions linked to these worksheets.

## Why should students make time for studying?

Time is used to determine the precise instant that an event occurred. Any student who plans to pursue any career must be able to tell the time in all situations. Students must understand and use the notion of time in order to function in the world around them and also be an integral part of a competitive atmosphere.

## Why does one need to work on easy, medium and hard worksheet questions?

Logically grasping a concept in just one of the components that need to be catered to before achieving mastery over a concept. Practicing repeated application of a specific concept is what yields results. When a student encounters easy level grade four time worksheets, they are repeatedly working on the application of the basic concept. After acclimatizing the mind to the basic concepts, students may find the same pattern redundant hence the medium level questions provide the right amount of challenge. It is important to work on the questions in the order of easy, medium and hard as each level encourages the student to learn without becoming overwhelmed with difficult questions straight away. Eventually, the student will be prepared for better challenges, and this is when they should try the hard grade 4 time worksheets.

## Time Worksheets Grade 4 Explanations

Q.1) Explanation –

Minutes past the hour mean how many minutes have passed after completion of an hour. i.e. here 35 minutes have passed after 3:00 so we can say it is 35 minutes past the hour.

Correct Answer – b)  35 minutes

Q.2) Explanation –

The hour hand is on between 7 and 8 so we will take it 7 and the minute hand is at 6 so minutes will be 6 × 5 = 30.

So, time = 7:30

Q.3) Explanation – Time Worksheets Grade 4

As we know that, 1 hours = 60 minutes To find 3 hours in minutes. We have to multiply both sides by 3 ( 3 x 1 ) hours = ( 3 x 60 ) minutes 3 hours = 180 minutes

Q.4) Explanation –

As we know that, 1 days = 24 hours To find 8 days in hours. We have to multiply both sides by 8 ( 8 x 1 ) days = ( 8 x 24 ) hours 8 days = 192 hours

Q.5) Explanation –

As we know that, 1 minutes = 60 seconds To find 20 minutes in seconds. We have to multiply both sides by 20 ( 20 x 1 ) minutes = ( 20 x 60 ) seconds 20 minutes = 1200 seconds

Q.6) Explanation – Time Worksheets Grade 4

1917 hours shows that the time is after noon. In the above time, the first two digits represent hours and last two digits represents minutes. We would first separate the hours digits (19), from minutes digits (17) by inserting a colon (:) between them Hence, 1917 hours can be written as 19:17 Since we need to write the time in terms of 12 hours clock time, we would convert 19 hours into 12 hour time, by subtracting 12 from 19, i.e, 19-12 = 7 Now we would replace the 19 hours by 7 and since the time is after noon, we would add p.m. to the above time, i.e, 07:17 p.m. Take the difference between the number and 12, and replace hours by p.m. Hence,1917 hours represent 07:17 p.m.

Correct Answer – c) 07:17 p.m.

Q.7) Explanation – Time Worksheets Grade 4

24-hours clock time does not contain a.m. or p.m., after the time. The time begins from midnight which is represent as 0000 hours. The time in 24-hours clock is represented by 4 digits, where, the first two digits represent hours and last two digits represents minutes After 12 noon we keep counting as 13, 14…… rather than starting with 1 again. So, to convert time into 24-hour clock if the given time is am then it will be the same in 24-hour clock If the time is pm, we will add 12 to the given time to convert into 24-hour clock time. Since, the time is 11:20 a.m., it would be written as 1120 hours in the 24-hours clock time.

Correct Answer – c) 1120 hours

Q.8) Explanation – Time Worksheets Grade 4

To find 1 hours before 09:20 p.m., we would need to add 1 hours to 09:20 p.m. The hours would be 9 – 1 = 8 Since it is more than 12, the p.m. would continue as pm Hence the time would be 8:20 pm.

Correct Answer – c) 08:20 p.m.

Q.9) Explanation – Time Worksheets Grade 4

Arrange minutes and seconds in columns, we get

40 seconds + 45 seconds = 85 seconds

= 60 seconds + 25 seconds

= 1 minute + 25 seconds

Write 25 below seconds column and carry over 1 to the minutes column

Add the minutes and the carry over of 1 minute

4 minutes + 7 minutes + 1 minutes = 12 minutes

Write 12 under the minutes column

Hence, 4 minutes 40 seconds + 7 minutes 45 seconds = 12 minutes 25 seconds

Correct Answer – b) 12 minutes 25 seconds

Q.10) Explanation – Time Worksheets Grade 4

Arranging hours and minutes in columns, we get

Subtracting minutes : As 30 > 15 we would borrow 1 minute from 7 hours leaving 6 in the hours column.

After taking 1 as carry minutes would be

1 hour + 15 minutes = 75 minutes

Now subtract 30 minutes from 75 minutes , i.e,

75 minutes – 30 minutes = 45 minutes

Write 45 under minutes column

Now subtract hours :-

6 hours – 4 hours = 2 hours

Write 2 under hours column

Hence, 7 hours 15 minutes – 4 hours 30 minutes = 2 hours 45 minutes

Correct Answer – c) 2 hours 45 minutes
