A task order is a mini government contract . Once a contractor has a basic contract, task orders are agreements for specific goods or services to meet the over-arching goals of the basic contract.

Government contracting can be a complex and challenging field, but it can also provide significant opportunities for businesses of all sizes. Just look at the government spending in the fiscal year 2023 !

US Government Spending Chart

If your business provides goods and services that government agencies need, this is an enormous opportunity. Whether you are a seasoned government contractor or new to the field, understanding task orders is crucial for success in this competitive industry.

This article will explain different types of task orders and how these mini contracts are used in the broader scope of government contracting. Knowing the different types of task orders will help you plan out the fee structure that fits your delivery of goods and services.

So, let's dive in and explore the world of task orders in government contracting!

Understanding Task Orders in Government Contracting

Once you have been awarded a basic contract, specifics will often be organized into smaller contracts, called task orders. Let’s look into that concept more closely.

Sample Task Order from the US Army

What is a Task Order?

Who: Task orders are agreements between the government and a contractor.

What: A task order is a type of contract issued by a government agency to a contractor who has already been awarded a basic contract. Note: A basic contract is a long-term agreement between a government agency and a contractor that establishes the terms and conditions under which the contractor will provide goods or services to the government.

Basic Contract Document Diagram - Task Orders for Government Contractors

When: Once a basic contract is in place, the government agency can issue task orders to the contractor to obtain specific goods or services.

How: These task orders are typically smaller in scope and duration than the basic contract and are used to provide the government agency with the specific goods or services it needs on an as-needed basis.

Advantages of Task Orders

There are several advantages to using task orders in government contracting. For the government agency, task orders provide flexibility and the ability to obtain goods or services on an as-needed basis without entering into a new contract. For the contractor, task orders provide the opportunity to compete for additional work and potentially earn more revenue under the terms of the basic contract.

Diagram Visual of Task Orders

Types of Task Orders

Several different types of task orders can be used in government contracting. Each type will have its own terms and conditions for payment of goods and services. For each type, we will use tables to illustrate what the payment structure entails.

These are the types of contracts, but don’t worry. We’ll explain each one.

Chart of the Different Types of Task Orders and Their Structuring

Firm Fixed Price Task Order

Firm-fixed-price task orders are used when the government agency and the contractor agree on a fixed price for the goods or services to be provided. The contractor is responsible for any cost overruns or profit, and the government agency pays the agreed-upon price regardless of the actual cost of the work.

Cost Reimbursement Task Order

Cost-reimbursement task orders are used when the final cost of the goods or services is uncertain or difficult to estimate. In these cases, the government agency pays the contractor for the actual costs of the work plus a fee for profit. The contractor is responsible for managing and documenting its costs to receive reimbursement from the government agency.

Time and Material Task Order

Time-and-materials task orders are used when the government agency needs to obtain goods or services on a time-and-materials basis.

In these cases, the government agency pays the contractor for the time and materials used to complete the work, plus a fee for profit. The contractor is responsible for tracking and billing its time and materials per the task order terms.

Labor-Hour Task Order

A labor-hour task order is a type of task order that is used in government contracting to pay for the labor hours worked in providing a specific service or supply. This type of task order is typically used when the exact amount of time and effort required to perform the work is difficult to determine in advance, or when the work is expected to be completed over an

Indefinite Delivery Task Order

An indefinite-delivery task order is a type of task order used in government contracting to place orders for goods or services on an as-needed basis. This type of task order is typically used when the government agency needs to obtain goods or services on a repetitive or long-term basis, but the exact quantity or delivery schedule has yet to be determined.

Fixed-Price Incentive-Fee Task Order

The fixed-price-incentive-fee task order is used in government contracting to provide a fixed price for the goods or services being procured, with an incentive fee based on the contractor's performance. This task order is typically used when the government agency wants to provide a financial incentive to the contractor to achieve specific performance goals or encourage

Level-of-Effort Task Order

A level-of-effort task order is used in government contracting to specify the amount of work or effort the contractor is required to perform rather than a specific end result. This task order is typically used when the government agency wants to ensure that a certain level of work is performed over a specific period, but the tasks or deliverables should be known in advance.

Requirements Task Order

A requirements task order is a type of task order that is used in government contracting to place an order for goods or services that are needed to fulfill a specific requirement or need. This type of task order is typically used when the government agency has a specific requirement or need that must be met, but the needed goods or services are not known in advance.

In conclusion, task orders are an important part of the government contracting process. They provide flexibility and the ability to obtain goods or services on an as-needed basis, and they offer opportunities for contractors to compete for additional work and earn additional revenue under the terms of a basic contract. Understanding the basics of task orders is crucial for success in government contracting.

Task Orders

An A&E contract can be used for any task that is covered in its scope of work. Once a contract is in place, task orders are written to tap the resources covered by the contract. Task Orders are mini-contracts that define a specific project's scope, cost, and schedule; they explain exactly how the money is to be spent. As a component of a contract, the Task Order's scope, cost, and schedule must conform to terms of the master contract.

Sample contract Sample task order

The following guidelines apply to task orders:

  • Consultants are paid according to the terms of the task order and contract.
  • A Task Order cannot include tasks or responsibilities not covered in the contract. If either the contract or the task order does not include reimbursement for a specific type of cost (such as travel), then those costs are not reimbursable.
  • A task order may cover tasks related to more than one project, or may be used on project-based contracts with large scopes or multiple phases.
  • A project may use services provided under one or more task orders, and services under one or more contracts.
  • Expenditures are tracked by WBS and Project ID. There may be more than one Project ID listed in a task order.

Apex Legends™: Breakout Patch Notes

Brace for breakout’s launch with full specs on crafting 2.0, legend upgrades, balance changes, and more..

BREAKOUT REWARDS

Every 2 weeks, a new Legend becomes free-to-play for the rest of the season. Each Legend will have a set of challenges to permanently unlock that Legend. Complete all Breakout Rewards Challenges before the season ends to unlock more rewards like the Reactive “Top Tier” Flatline and the Legendary “Runaway Renegade” Wraith.

Check out the full breakdown, including Legends and chase rewards, in our Breakout Rewards blog .

BREAKOUT MAP ROTATION

The following maps will be available in Trios and Duos for the season:

  • Storm Point
  • World’s Edge

PERFORMANCE MODE: 120Hz

On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X, the Video Settings menu has a new “Performance” mode option that is available to players with 120Hz displays. This option targets 120 FPS performance with content optimizations and reductions to visual quality.

To achieve 120 FPS, current-gen consoles now run on a new multithreaded rendering system, built on top of the Rendering Hardware Interface (RHI). Previously, even with GPU optimizations, the Apex rendering engine has been bottlenecked by single-threaded rendering code, which could not scale to the capabilities of modern hardware. This new system allows us to fully utilize the GPU and forms the foundation for future improvements to the rendering engine.

Breakout brings a complete rework to Crafting, streamlining the system. Welcome to Crafting 2.0, legends!

Replicators have quite a few changes, including a fancy new paint job. They are now free to use, and no longer require crafting materials—we’ve removed them and crafting rotations. When you open the crafting menu, you’ll see that the available options have been reduced: Shield Battery, Medkit, Ammo, and Player Banners. Printing any item will exhaust that replicator specifically for you. You’ll need to find another one if you want another item, so choose wisely.

To offset the single-use system, the number of available Replicators have been increased across the board. Every game will start with 12 Replicators spawned at the start of the match, with an additional Replicator airdrop at the start of Round 4 to add some late-game opportunities. We’re also including a few quality of life changes for Crafting:

  • Decreased interaction time with Replicators
  • Inventory can now be accessed from the crafting menu
  • Printed items left alone will auto-eject from the Replicator after some time

WORLD’S EDGE: RAMPART’S BIG MAUDE

With crafting materials gone, Rampart has been figuring out how to get more customers through her door, and what better way than with a Fire Sale!

All Big Maude paintball weapons are now free, but they will take time to dispense from their vending machines. Once a player has claimed their free weapon, they cannot get another. Loba will still be able to steal a second gun with her Black Market. There is also an increased variety of weapons to choose from, but gold kitted weapons are no longer offered at Big Maude.

LEGEND UPGRADES

This season we’re introducing the Legend Upgrade system for BR modes—an in-match progression system that deepens the Apex Legends experience by allowing you to tailor your Legend to your playstyle. Players will gain EVO points in a variety of new ways across the Battle Royale to level-up not just your armor, but your Legend—unlocking unique ability upgrades at Levels 2 and 3. With each match being a fresh start, the plethora of possibilities adds a new level of strategy and meta.

Click through the menu below for the upgrade trees for each Legend and check out our Breakout Highlights blog for the full breakdown on Legend Upgrades.

PATCH NOTES

LIVEAPI UPDATES AND UPCOMING CHANGES

We are adding new gameplay event messages to LiveAPI supporting Legend Upgrades and EVO Level changes alongside improvements and bug fixes based on ongoing feedback. The schema of all events alongside technical documentation can be found in the LiveAPI folder of the game installation.

In order to better support LiveAPI 2.0, we will retire the existing file-based output in favor of the WebSockets connection interface. The file-based output will be turned off by default in a future patch and entirely removed from LiveAPI by Q3 2024. Developers should begin migrating their apps to the WebSockets interface in order to avoid disruptions.

Pokémon Go Tour: Sinnoh’s global event celebrates both the original Sinnoh region and the Hisui region. The huge event takes place starting on Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. until Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. in your local time .

There is a lot going on in this event, so it’s a great time to play. There’s no paid ticket to participate, so all the perks and bonuses are available to all players. There’s a halved hatch distance for all eggs put into Incubators during the event, up to six special trades can be made (instead of just one), trading Stardust cost has been halved , and there’s no limit on remote raiding from Feb 23-25.

Law And Order: Organized Crime Interview Part 3

Posted: February 25, 2024 | Last updated: February 25, 2024

Spoilers ahead for the Season 4 premiere of Law & Order: Organized Crime. Months passed in the Law & Order universe by the time Organized Crime's fourth season picked up in the 2024 TV schedule, but the task force was still struggling with the death of Whelan from the end of the Season 3 finale. All of them navigated their grief differently; Bell is working to prevent such a tragedy from happening again, Stabler threw himself into undercover work, and Jet and Reyes... well, they're having an affair. Danielle Moné Truitt spoke with CinemaBlend about how spread thin Bell is after all these months, and I'm already anxiously awaiting Stabler finding out about Jet and Reyes.

Splatoon 3: Side Order’s roguelite action offers the evolution Nintendo’s chaotic shooter needed

No squidding around

Key art of Agent 8 outside the Spire of Order in Splatoon 3: Side Order.

I adore the Splatoon series, and although I was a massive fan of Splatoon 3 when it launched on Nintendo Switch in 2022, I couldn’t help but feel like Nintendo’s latest colorful shooter was missing something. Thankfully, its newly released expansion, Side Order , has quickly proved to be exactly what it needed all along, as well as a fantastic evolution of the series as a whole.

Side Order is the second wave of Splatoon 3 ’s paid expansion pass, and offers an entirely fresh single-player roguelite experience (including rogue elements like permadeath and random levels, but with some meta-progression), the likes of which the series has never seen before. Playing as the Octoling (half octopus, half kid) Agent 8, who also starred in Splatoon 2 ’s Octo Expansion downloadable content (DLC), players are tasked with ascending the creepy ‘Spire of Order’ one floor at a time by clearing the challenges waiting on each one.

Every time you enter the tower, you can expect the trials that await you to be different, with variations in objectives, difficulty, and bonus challenges randomized. These missions include destroying portals that are constantly spitting out waves of terrifying enemies called Jelletons, maintaining control over a zone by destroying enemies that get in your way (like the main game’s Splat Zones), and guiding balls over to goals safely.

Completing a floor will also add to your character’s Palette - a skill tree that can be gradually populated with useful abilities such as boosts to your weapon damage, the speed at which your powerful special attacks can be charged, and more. All of these are reset upon losing your lives, at which point you’re also booted out of the tower to start over, but your skills are converted into in-game currency, which can be spent on permanent upgrades to make your trek back up the spire a little easier.

It’s an incredibly compelling loop, and within reason, players are able to select their difficulty on each floor as they progress. As you ascend higher and higher up the spire, those trickiest options are no joke, and there’s no doubt that even the most experienced Splatoon players will eventually find themselves swamped by a never-ending flow of Jelletons as they desperately attempt to fulfill their task. It’s fast-paced, chaotic, and utterly fantastic.

My main issue with Splatoon 3 was the fact that it didn’t include any new main modes at launch to spice up the usual experience. Other than a tabletop card game called Tableturf Battle, all of the ranked and casual modes were exactly the same as Splatoon 2 ’s. Given that both games were released on Switch, players who weren’t die-hard fans of the series who’d already bought Splatoon 2 didn’t have an enormous incentive to dive into Splatoon 3 as well, other than the new weapons, maps, and base single-player experience, of course.

Side Order , however, is truly refreshing, and although it’s another single-player mode, it manages to offer the newness that Splatoon 3 should have had from the start. I can’t emphasize enough how well the roguelite formula works for Splatoon . The constant variety in the challenges it offers, along with the option for difficulty beyond what we’ve ever seen in the series’ single-player modes, make for an expansion I have no intention of putting down even after rolling credits - I still have so much to unlock. Of course, the whole thing is drenched in the series’ usual charm, too, with endearing dialogue between characters and quirky music serving as your soundtrack for the full experience.

Splatoon ’s base mechanics of covering the ground in ink to slow foes down and transform into a cephalopod which lets you quickly swim and traverse surfaces, hide to ambush enemies, have always been delightfully unique. However, by stepping foot (or tentacle, I guess), into a new subgenre and offering further innovative ways to play, I feel like I’ve fallen in love with the whole concept all over again.

All in all, Side Order ’s replayability is immense, and while it’s a paid expansion that has arrived over a year on from the base game’s launch, it makes Splatoon 3 ’s existence more worthwhile than it ever has been for those who weren’t quite sold from the start. Will roguelite modes like this become a recurring feature if we ever get more Splatoon games? Who knows. But I, for one, welcome it as a worthwhile addition to its single-player content, as well as a creative evolution of the unique shooter action fans know and love.
