Space Counting Activities (0 to 20)
Rosey | Posted on January 22, 2020 |
These fun space counting activities help kids learn about numbers up to twenty. They’re a great fine motor activity too.
The following space counting activities are easy to prep, practical and can be used in lots of ways!
Space Counting Mats
You can choose between a space counting mat with numbers up to ten or numbers up to twenty. Both of the counting mats feature ten frames, which I find are really good for helping kids develop 1:1 correspondence.
Preparation – Begin by printing the counting work mats and number cards. I recommend laminating the counting mats and number cards for added durability. Once that’s done, you’ll just need to grab some counters. I love using counting bears so the kids can pretend they’re astronauts blasting off into space! I found my monster / alien counters in the party favor section at Spotlight (Australia).
How to Play – Start by getting the kids to choose a number card to put on their mat. They then need to collect that amount of counters and count them onto the rocket. Encourage them to touch each counter as they count. As an extension activity, ask the kids to try counting backwards from that number. Most kids love counting backwards when there is a pretend rocket to launch! :)
Space Worksheets
Once the kids have finished their hands-on space counting activities, you can get them to complete one of the dab a dot worksheets. There is a worksheet with numbers up to ten and another one that focuses mainly on teen numbers.
Preparation – For these worksheets you’ll need some q-tips and paint.
How to Play – Read the number above each ten frame and then paint that number of dots.
Tip – If you have dry erase pockets, you could slip the worksheet in there and draw the dots with an erasable marker instead.
Space Fine Motor Activities
Another way you can use the space number cards is to create counting “shooting stars”. This activity is best done with older children under close supervision due to the small parts.
Preparation – Tape a number card onto a chenille stick and fill a basket with beads or cut up straws. I like using pony beads which can be found in most craft stores.
How to Play – Choose a shooting star and read the number. Then count that number of beads onto the chenille stick.

Space Counting Worksheet
If you’re looking for a fun way to work on numbers for your kids, this Space Counting Worksheet is the best. It’s a great way for them to love incorporating space into their daily numbers as well.
Be certain to check out my other Space Activities for Kids !
With numbers and math being such a huge focus and topic for the kids, it just makes sense to have fun worksheets for them to practice on. The best part about this printable worksheet is that it combines both at the same time! They can focus on their love for space AND work on their counting skills as well.
Sounds like the perfect win-win situation to me! The kids seem to agree because they’re always asking for more worksheets just like this one. (and I’ll happily agree to that every single time!)
This is why I’ll continue to think up and create printables that are all about themes. It’s because the kids seem to really enjoy learning with themes and they actually look forward to learning this way as well!
This post may contain affiliate links meaning I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read my disclosure policy here.
The fun part about this worksheet is that you can use it any way that you please. I’ve used this when I’m working on number recognition and just as a fun way to have the kids learn how to start counting with confidence, too.
You can also use this as a great way to transition into a space-themed learning activity as well. This will get them excited about learning about space in a way that is visual while also being helpful, too.
The way that you present this Space Counting Worksheet to your child can vary in a way that works for you. You know the preferred learning methods of your child so use that to your advantage.
Recommended Math Manipulatives
The other big part about using math in your daily activities is to remember that there are broad ways that you can use that math. Some people prefer to use it as a visual while some kids actually learn better with hands-on math learning. In my opinion, you do what works best for you and your family.
Some days, we do a mixture of both. There are times when the kids want to see numbers and there are times when the kids want to use objects for math learning.
I’ve found that incorporating some of these math learning tools, it’s a great way to find a new method of teaching and learning for the kids. If you pair these up with the Space Counting Worksheet, you’re going to find new ways to build their math confidence as well.
Math counters can help kids see them work out math problems when they start to run out of fingers. They’re also great for visualizing math problems, never teach math without them.
Why learning worksheets work for kids
Keep in mind that when it comes to printables, there are a lot of ways that you can use these printables. I’m a big fan of printables because it gives structure and also the ability for kids to complete them on their own.
I love being able to print off a worksheet and have the kids get started right away. It’s usually something that they don’t have to wait for me to help with at all and it’s a simple way for them to use their own resources to get started.
Teaching Counting at a Young Age
The best part about using worksheets such as these is that it helps to teach kids the importance of learning their numbers. It’s fun to see them realize that there are really numbers everywhere we look.
Once they understand the basics of counting and see the benefit of being able to count, you’re going to find them counting anything and everything that they can. This is going to be the new normal for them in terms of counting objects, food, and even the number of green beans that are left on their plate.
When you can use everyday objects to associate with counting and numbers, it gives them a bit of freedom to use those numbers as they want. They’ll love telling you that they have 2 teddy bears, need three more candy bars for the day, or have 7 rocks that they want you to see on the front porch.
When a young learner grasps how to start counting it’s all that they’re going to want to focus on and show off to you! And this is a great thing!
Ways to Use This Space Counting Worksheet
There are multiple ways that you can use this worksheet so have fun with the process. I’m a bit of a planner so being able to print off this worksheet and have it in my binder to use later.
You can easily use this printable space counting worksheet as a fun way to dive into a counting learning lesson or space-themed lesson.
I’ve even used this as a way to build up the fun of getting outside and looking up at the stars at night. My kids LOVE anything space-themed and have such a fun time seeing the planets on space objects on paper and then using that to go outside and look up at the sky.
We’ve taken out our telescope to look up at the sky so many times and had such a blast talking about everything that we can see in space, too. Tying in this Space Counting Worksheet is just a great way to get in that mindset and tie it all together.
