Difficult to use app

Keeps on randomly asking for signing-in even when my subscription is valid up to next year 2021. Doesn’t keep record of which edition a subscriber normally reads. So every time the app is started, we have to select city of our choice.

Too much advertisement makes this awesome app into a worst one

Dear Amar Ujala, I am a regular user of your app, It used to be a fantastic app, since last few updates it has become worst. Due to few changes like tooooooooooo much of advertisement which never closes, many many time u have to close ads and it still goes on the advertisement page, i know its important for u but if it remains like this who will use your app. Also from the news column of (Duniya) world news there used to be one sub column with area like AMARICA, Middle east, other countries, that has disappeared which makes your app very annoying. Please make it these changes so once again it becomes the best app for hindi news.

Senate passes 'puppy mill' bill that stops cities from banning pet store dog sales

news desk amar ujala

A bill that prevents cities from banning the sale of dogs at pet stores passed the Senate Monday and heads to the governor’s desk for signing.

The Senate approved controversial House Bill 1412 by a 31-18 vote. The house passed it in January 59-36 .

Proponents of the bill said it would provide oversight of unsupervised puppy mills by requiring them and pet stores to keep detailed records, open to inspection by state regulators.

The stores, along with animal care facilities and animal rescue operations, would need to register with the state Board of Animal Health and could be fined for not complying.

“This puts in place some of the strictest standards in the country for retail sales of dogs,” said Sen. Blake Doriot, R- Elkhart, during floor debate.

Opponents said the law would be toothless because it provides no funding for the increased inspections and doesn’t require them, anyway.

In addition, foes say, it is another example of the legislature thwarting home rule because it rescinds bans of pet shop dog sales from puppy mills already enacted by 21 cities and towns, including Indianapolis and Carmel.

“We are taking away the ability of elected officials to deal with problems that affect their cities and towns,” said Sen. Lonnie Randolph, D- East Chicago. “We can’t be the police dog on for the whole state on local issues.”

The cities with sales bans argued they would increase pet adoptions at overcrowded animal shelters if people did not have the option to buy dogs at stores.

Doriot said the issue is about “commerce” and free trade.

“They stepped out of their lane,” he said of the cities with the bans. “It’s like telling a grocery store what they can sell.”

But Sen. Fady Qaddoura, D-Indianapolis, said the restriction is minimal.

“We are not shutting these businesses down,” he said.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society and the Association of Indiana Municipalities were among those testifying against the bill.

Animal breeders and pet stores backed the bill.

An original document signed by President Abraham Lincoln four days before his assassination on 15 April 1865.

‘A new find’: one of last documents Abraham Lincoln signed goes on sale

Rare letter valued at $45,000 that lay undiscovered in desk drawer for years bears 16th president’s signature days before his death

One of the last documents ever signed by Abraham Lincoln , which for years lay undiscovered in a desk drawer, is being offered for sale, valued at $45,000.

The 16th president signed the document, a treasury appointment for Allen Gangewer, an anti-slavery campaigner in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Washington DC, on 11 April 1865 – the day he made what would turn out to be his final speech.

Three days later, at Ford’s Theatre in downtown Washington, Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth and died the following day.

“A woman from the midwest, probably in her 80s, gave us a ring and arranged to come meet with us at our office outside Philadelphia,” said Nathan Raab, president of the Raab Collection, which will sell the Gangewer document online .

“And she told me this heartwarming story about her husband, how he had passed away, and in looking through his stuff, sometime later, she had found this desk that he used to work at, and inside this desk there was this Lincoln document. She didn’t know much about it, except obviously it had been acquired at some point by her late husband, who had kept it close to his work.

“You imagine people make plans for these documents, for when they’re not here. And a lot of people do. But you do find that on occasion these things pop up in rather unexpected and exciting places.”

In Lincoln studies, 11 April 1865 is a date that looms large. The civil war was all but over and crowds pressed the president to speak in public. That night, from a White House window, he did so.

Addressing the subject of Reconstruction in the defeated southern states, Lincoln expressed support for Black suffrage. Looking on, Booth – an actor, white supremacist and Confederate sympathiser – is said to have said: “That is the last speech he will make.”

The document now offered for sale was one of the last Lincoln ever signed. It reads: “Washington, April 11, 1865. AM Gangewer is hereby appointed to discharge the duties of Third Auditor of the Treasury during the absence of the Auditor caused by sickness or otherwise. Abraham Lincoln.”

Allen Gangewer edited German-language and anti-slavery newspapers before becoming private secretary to Salmon P Chase, the governor of Ohio who was treasury secretary under Lincoln and later chief justice of the US supreme court.

Gangewer was also a co-founder of the National Colored Home , established in Washington, in a house confiscated from a treasury official who joined the Confederate government, to care for formerly enslaved people.

Daniel Worthington , director of the papers of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, said the document now offered for sale was “a new find”, the National Archives holding only a contemporary copy.

Asked how the original was authenticated, Raab said: “If you’ve ever read the book Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell [about instinctual thinking] … when you’ve looked at enough documents that Lincoln signed, and I certainly have, you do get an initial kind of ‘blink’ moment, where you really feel you’re looking at something that’s authentic, or kind of a sinking feeling where there’s something that’s not right.

“… The process is not to immediately look at the signature but to look at the context, the paper, the wear, the ink, the historical event. Did this event actually take place? Was this man actually appointed? Who was he? And then, was Lincoln in Washington on 11 April? We know he was. Then look at the signature, of course. So the process is a multifaceted one.

“In some ways, you’re looking at the signature but not in a way you might expect. Of course, I’m looking to make sure it’s Lincoln’s handwriting. But I’m also making sure it’s signed ‘Abraham Lincoln’ not ‘A Lincoln’, because Lincoln signed his letters ‘A Lincoln’ but these formal documents were always signed with his full name. One signed the wrong way is pretty much as close to the kiss of death as you can get. He was consistent in his practice.”

For the sale through the Raab Collection website , Raab expects interest from institutions and private collectors. Signatures of Lincoln and George Washington are the most highly valued among US presidents, in large part due to increasing scarcity.

“There will come a day 100 years from now where these things will be nearly impossible to find,” Raab said. “We’re dealing with a product where there’s an increasing demand but a decreasing supply, because these things sell to major private collections that they never exit or they go to institutions or, God forbid, they get lost or destroyed. But the demand continues to increase.”

Google 'missed an opportunity' to solve cookieless advertising, says The Trade Desk CEO

  • The Trade Desk CEO Jeff Green criticized Google's cookieless ad technology.
  • The longtime critic of Google said the so-called Privacy Sandbox would hit publishers' revenue.
  • The Trade Desk is also pitching its own cookie-replacement solution that competes with Google's.

The Trade Desk CEO and founder Jeff Green thinks that Google missed its chance to build an advertising product that works without using third-party cookies.

Google plans to kill third-party cookies that track how ads are targeted and measured this year from its web browser Chrome, and it started by killing 1% — equivalent to 30 million users — in January. To replace cookies, Google is pushing marketers to test cookieless ads with its own set of technologies called Privacy Sandbox.

According to Green, Google’s Privacy Sandbox initiative doesn’t satisfy advertisers’ need to target ads across the web.

“I believe that Google has missed an opportunity to build something better,” he said during The Trade Desk’s fourth-quarter earnings. “Increased complexity with decreased functionality is hardly a compelling offering.”

Google has stated that: "The Privacy Sandbox APIs provide building blocks that support business goals while preserving privacy for people. They are not designed to offer 1:1 replacements for third-party cookies or cross-site identifiers."

But Green added that Privacy Sandbox is too complex, which will cause a poor user experience for Chrome users if they don’t see relevant ads on publishers’ websites.

“I think it's not fully understood by more than ten people on the planet,” he said.

But Green is concerned about how publishers will adapt to Google’s changes. For publishers without first-party data like email addresses about their visitors, ad prices are likely to tank once third-party cookies go away. Green cited data that found some publishers’ ad prices dropped by 30% after Google deprecated 1% of cookies.

“Without either cookies or publisher authentication, advertisers won’t value those ad impressions nearly as much,” he said. “This is a wake-up call for publishers, and the math is obvious.”

Green’s comments are newsworthy because The Trade Desk is the largest independent adtech company that sells technology advertisers use to buy ads online. The Trade Desk wields significant influence in the digital ad industry, and Google is the company’s biggest competitor.

Green said that advertisers — The Trade Desk’s primary clients — are likely to be less affected by Privacy Sandbox than publishers. Advertisers are increasingly buying ads in places like streaming TV that collect email addresses from users. And advertisers have first-party data that can be used to target ads, he said.

“Fewer cookies doesn’t really matter a ton for us — it doesn’t stop our work because we’ve been busy with other open internet pioneers building something much better,” he said.

The Trade Desk pitches a cookie replacement solution called Unified ID 2.0.

Green said that The Trade Desk is also testing Privacy Sandbox.

“Yes, we’ve been fairly critical of it, and yes, I don’t think it’s a good product but we have to try,” Green said. “This may be the most iterated-on product that I’ve ever seen from Google, so they keep changing it a lot.”

Green has a long history of criticizing Google. He has pushed back on Google’s big ad business — particularly in recent years as Google faces antitrust concerns from regulators.

However, The Trade Desk also sells some ad tools for publishers, which some experts say replicates Google's sprawling suite of ad products.

The Trade Desk reported $1.95 billion in 2023 revenue, a 23% year-over-year growth. The firm managed $9.6 billion in ad spend last year.
