What Is a Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your mobile mechanic business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategies for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan

If you’re looking to start a mobile mechanic business or grow your existing mobile mechanic company, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your mobile mechanic business to improve your chances of success. Your mobile mechanic business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Mobile Mechanic Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a mobile mechanic business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans, and angel investors. When it comes to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan (hand it to them in person or email to them as a PDF file) and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to ensure that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings and bank loans are the most common funding paths for mobile mechanic companies.

How to write a business plan for a mobile mechanic business.

If you want to start a mobile mechanic business or expand your current one, you need a business plan. The guide and sample below details the necessary information for how to write each essential component of your mobile mechanic business plan.

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your executive summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the kind of mobile mechanic business you are running and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a mobile mechanic business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of mobile mechanic businesses?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.

  • Give a brief overv iew of the mobile mechanic industry.
  • Discuss the type of mobile mechanic business you are operating.
  • Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers.
  • Provide a snapshot of your marketing strategy. Identify the key members of your team.
  • Offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Overview

In your company overview, you will detail the type of mobile mechanic business you are operating.

For example, you m ight specialize in one of the following types of mobile mechanic businesses:

  • Auto Mobile Mechanic : Probably the most popular type of mobile mechanic, a wide variety of services are available to service or repair vehicles within a geographical region. This may include assisting with emergency mechanical repairs for a car, an oil change for a car parked in a business lot, checking the tire pressure of a car in a customer’s driveway or replacing auto windshield wipers on a busy downtown street.
  • Heavy Equipment Mobile Mechanic: Although not as frequently needed, a mobile mechanic service that specializes in repairing or servicing heavy equipment vehicles typically garners a higher rate-of-pay than autos and generally offers more specialized repairs.
  • Motorcycle and Quad Mobile Mechanic: The focus of this type of mobile mechanic service is on street and dirt motorcycles, as well as quad vehicles of all types. Street motorcycles need regular servicing to change the oil and check parts. Because dirt motorcycles and quads are often used on farms or ranches, repairs and servicing of both are frequently needed.
  • Recreational Vehicle Mobile Mechanic: Most customers of a recreational vehicle mobile mechanic company do not service or repair their own vehicles. As a result, mobile mechanics who specialize in recreational vehicle service and repair typically have a sizable customer base. Repairs of recreational vehicles often take place by a highway and 24/7 service is usually offered at an additional cost to the customer.

In addition to explaining the type of mobile mechanic business you will operate, the company overview needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to questions such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of autos serviced or repaired, the addition of services to multiple cities, or the increase of customers who have appointments for regular oil changes.
  • What is your legal business structure? Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry or market analysis, you need to provide an overview of the mobile mechanic industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the mobile mechanic industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your marketing strategy, particularly if your analysis identifies market trends.

The third reason is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your mobile mechanic business plan:

  • How big is the mobile mechanic industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential target market for your mobile mechanic business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your mobile mechanic business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: individual auto owners, owners of heavy equipment vehicles, recreational vehicle owners, motorcycle and quad owners.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of mobile mechanic business you operate. Clearly, auto owners would respond to different marketing promotions than heavy equipment vehicle owners, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, including a discussion of the ages, genders, locations, and income levels of the potential customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can recognize and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers. Ideally you can speak with a sample of your target customers before writing your plan to better understand their needs.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are othe r mobile mechanic businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. This includes auto repair shops, auto parts stores, motorcycle service centers, and recreational vehicle repair services. You need to mention direct competition, as well.

For each direct competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What type of mobile mechanic business are they?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide options for 24-hour emergency services?
  • Will you offer services that your competition doesn’t?
  • Will you provide customer service that includes a free amenity?
  • Will you offer specialized discounts for packages, such as a service plus cleaning?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a mobile mechanic business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type o f mobile mechanic company that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you provide an oil change and tire check as part of every auto service visit? Will you carry specific repair tools and supplies in your vehicle to meet the needs of heavy equipment vehicles? Will you stock recreational vehicle quick-fix parts in your vehicle for emergency use?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of yo ur plan, yo u are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the site of your mobile mechanic company. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your mobile mechanic business located in a busy used auto sales district, at your home, or in a small garage in an urban neighborhood? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your mobile mechanic marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertise in local papers, radio stations and/or magazines
  • Reach out to websites
  • Distribute flyers
  • Engage in email marketing
  • Advertise on social media platforms
  • Improve the SEO (search engine optimization) on your website for targeted keywords

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your mobile mechanic business, including answering calls, setting appointments for regular servicing, stocking supplies and equipment, and monitoring 24/7 emergency service calls, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to service your Xth auto, or when you will reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your mobile mechanic business to a new city.

Management Team

To demonstrate your mobile mechanic business’ potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing mobile mechanic businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing a mobile mechanic business or successfully running a vehicle repair shop.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance s heet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you service 100 autos per month, repair 20 recreational vehicles, or provide emergency services 10 times monthly ? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your mobile mechanic business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a mobile mechanic business:

  • Cost of your mobile mechanic vehicle, repair equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and equipment

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your home office location as a cost-saving feature and offer a list of already-established customers for monthly vehicle servicing.

Writing a business plan for your mobile mechanic business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will understand the mobile mechanic industry, your competition, and your customers. You will develop a marketing strategy and will understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful mobile mechanic business.

The United States auto repair market is valued at $78B with approximately 280,000 businesses in operation and over 614,000 employees working in the industry across the country. The auto repair industry has grown steadily over the past five years. Much of this growth can be attributed to more vehicles on the road combined with an increasing age of the vehicles in service. Additionally, rising disposable incomes have led to more people foregoing DIY repairs, and instead, taking their vehicles to industry operators when they need to be repaired.

One of the biggest challenges facing the auto repair industry is the growing shortage of technicians as many are retiring and there are not enough new technicians joining the field to fill the vacancies. Additional challenges include increased digitization and evolving technologies. Industry operators will need to keep up with the latest innovations to remain competitive.

How does a mobile mechanic business make money?

Mobile mechanics make money by providing a variety of services to their clients, such as oil changes, brake repairs, tire rotations, and engine trouble shoots. They can charge either flat fees for services or per hour rates depending on the type of job they are doing. Additionally, mobile mechanics can offer preventative maintenance packages that are more cost effective for clients. One example of a target audience for a mobile mechanic business would be commercial truck fleets looking to save money by getting their vehicles serviced off-site instead of in a shop.

Creating a strong brand for your mobile mechanic business is crucial to standing out in a competitive market and building trust with customers. Your brand embodies your business identity and communicates your values, professionalism, and expertise in the field of auto repair. Consider the following steps to develop a persuasive and memorable brand:

  • Define Your Unique Value Proposition: Clearly articulate what sets your service apart from others. Is it your speed, affordability, customer service, or specialized skills?
  • Choose a Memorable Name and Logo: Your brand name should resonate with your target audience and reflect your services, while your logo should be eye-catching and easily recognizable at a glance.
  • Select a Color Scheme and Typography: Pick colors and fonts that reflect the personality of your brand—professional, friendly, reliable—and ensure they are consistent across all marketing materials.
  • Create a Slogan or Tagline: A catchy slogan can help people remember your brand and what you stand for. Make it short, memorable, and relevant to your mobile mechanic services.
  • Build an Online Presence: Develop a professional website and maintain active social media profiles to showcase your brand, share customer testimonials, and provide valuable content related to auto maintenance and repair.
  • Consistently Deliver on Your Brand Promise: Ensure that every customer interaction reflects your brand values and commitment to quality service to build a strong, loyal customer base.

How to come up with a name for your mobile mechanic business?

When coming up with a name for your mobile mechanic business, think about something that will stand out from the competition. Brainstorm several ideas that are unique and memorable, and make sure the name is easy to spell and pronounce. Consider incorporating words such as "cars," "trucks," or "automotive" into the name to help customers easily identify the services you offer. You can also consider playing around with a catchy phrase that ties in your services. After you have some ideas, research them online to ensure there isn’t another business with a similar name. Once you have chosen a name, register it with the state and get trademark protection.

Starting a mobile mechanic business requires not only technical know-how but also legal savvy. Step 4 in your entrepreneurial journey is to formalize your business registration, which will lay the groundwork for legal operations and financial management. • Choose a business structure (e.g., sole proprietorship, LLC, corporation) that best suits your needs and provides the appropriate level of personal liability protection and tax benefits.
  • Register your business name with the appropriate state authorities, ensuring it is unique and meets all state naming requirements.
  • Obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS for tax purposes, especially if you plan to hire employees.
  • Apply for any required local and state business licenses and permits, which can vary depending on your location and the services you offer.
  • Make sure to get adequate insurance, such as general liability and commercial auto insurance, to protect your mobile mechanic business from potential claims or accidents.
  • Register for state and local taxes to ensure compliance with sales, payroll, and income tax requirements.

Starting a mobile mechanic business requires careful attention to legal requirements to ensure your operations are above board. Acquiring the necessary licenses and permits is a crucial step that will vary depending on your location and the services you provide. Below is a guide to help you navigate this process:

  • Research Local Regulations: Check with your city or county clerk's office to understand local business licensing requirements. You may need a general business license to operate.
  • Obtain a Business License: Apply for a business license through the appropriate local or state agency. This license legitimizes your business and is typically required for tax purposes.
  • Automotive Repair License: Some jurisdictions require mechanics to have a specific auto repair license. Look into your state's Department of Consumer Affairs or similar entity to see if this applies to you.
  • Specialized Permits: If you're performing specific services, like HVAC repair or electrical work, you might need additional permits. Check the requirements for each service you offer.
  • Zoning and Parking Permits: Since you're operating a mobile service, ensure you have the correct permits for parking and operating in different areas, especially if you have a designated location for your administrative work.
  • Environmental Regulations: Comply with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations regarding waste disposal and air quality, if applicable to your operations.
  • Insurance: While not a permit or license, having the proper insurance is essential for protecting your business from liability and is often required for certain licenses.

What licenses and permits are needed to run a mobile mechanic business?

In order to run a mobile mechanic business, you may need any combination of the following licenses and permits, depending on local regulations: business license, business tax registration, seller's permit/resale certificate, emission testing certificate, vehicle inspection certification, hazardous materials certification, driver's license, hazardous waste management permits.

Securing your financial foundation is crucial when starting a mobile mechanic business. Opening a business bank account will help you manage your finances professionally and separate personal and business expenses. If your initial investment isn't enough, you may need to secure additional funding to cover startup costs and ensure smooth operation.

  • Choose the right bank: Research banks to find one that offers favorable terms for small businesses, such as low fees, online banking, and good customer service.
  • Prepare the required documents: You'll typically need your business registration documents, EIN, and personal identification to open a business bank account.
  • Explore funding options: Consider various funding sources such as small business loans, lines of credit, SBA loans, or even crowdfunding platforms tailored for startups.
  • Create a detailed business plan: A solid business plan can increase your chances of securing a loan by demonstrating the viability and financial projections of your mobile mechanic business.
  • Consider equipment financing: If you need expensive tools or a vehicle, look into equipment financing options that can spread the cost over time.
  • Budget for operating expenses: Ensure you secure enough funding to cover not just startup costs but also several months of operating expenses while the business gains traction.

Establishing competitive and fair pricing for your mobile mechanic services is crucial to attract customers and ensure the sustainability of your business. Here are several factors to consider when setting your prices:

  • Cost Analysis: Calculate all costs involved, including parts, labor, travel, and overhead expenses, to determine the minimum price you need to charge to break even and make a profit.
  • Market Rates: Research what competitors are charging for similar services in your area to ensure your rates are competitive. Adjust your pricing to reflect your level of expertise, speed, and quality of service.
  • Service Complexity: Offer tiered pricing based on the complexity and time required for different services. Basic maintenance can have a standard rate, while more complex repairs may be priced on a case-by-case basis.
  • Value-Based Pricing: Consider the value you're providing to the customer, such as convenience and personalized service, which can justify higher pricing compared to traditional garages.
  • Discounts and Promotions: Incorporate discounts for repeat customers or bundled services to encourage customer loyalty and increase the average transaction value.
  • Transparent Quotations: Provide clear and itemized quotations to customers before commencing work to build trust and avoid disputes over pricing.

Before learning how to start a mobile mechanic business, let’s define what a mobile mechanic even is.

What is a mobile mechanic?

As the name suggests, a mobile mechanic provides vehicle maintenance and car repair services at any location. These professionals travel to their customers unlike conventional workshops, where car owners bring their vehicles to the mechanic.  Many may consider being a mobile mechanic restrictive. And while you can’t lug around a lift and a hoist, there are still plenty of profitable repair services you can offer:

  • Brake service: Brakes are one of the most important vehicle components, and they wear out fast. Additionally, they’re relatively simple for a mobile mechanic to fix.
  • Battery replacements: Car batteries in internal combustion engines (ICE) need to be replaced every 4 to 5 years . There’s always that one person who challenges the manufacturer’s recommended replacement schedule and pushes the battery until the very end. These people are likely to find themselves stranded, waiting for a mobile mechanic to help them out.
  • Air filters: Busy people might not want to drop their cars off at a workshop for something like an annual air filter replacement . They’d prefer having a mobile mechanic replace the filter while they’re at work or relaxing at home.
  • Engine oil changes: Until the time comes that everyone is driving electric vehicles (EV), engine oil changes will remain important. A mobile mechanic can reach the customer’s location and conduct oil changes on the spot. However, it’s important to prepare your shop for electrification so that you can stay in the repair business when EVs eventually dominate the roads.
  • Moving parts under the hood: Mobile mechanics can replace spark plugs, alternators, timing belts, water pumps, and conduct vehicle diagnostics . This makes mobile mechanics ideal for people who want quick maintenance checks.
  • Tire rotation and replacement: Driving on worn-out tires can be hazardous. Many people would prefer the convenience and lower cost of a mobile mechanic over getting their vehicles towed to a workshop if they have damaged tires.

How to start a mobile mechanic business

The perks of becoming a professional mobile mechanic

Now that you know what a mobile mechanic is, let’s go over some of the benefits of becoming one.

  • Convenience: In your own traditional repair shop, you might sit around waiting for customers. However, as a mobile mechanic, you can choose to go home and relax on slower days. You can set your own working hours and continue to fix cars afterward to earn an extra buck too!
  • Lower cost structure: As a mobile mechanic, you just need to worry about the variable cost of fuel and overheads incurred for basic maintenance. Other startup costs that traditional shops take on won’t apply. Since these are typically lower than utilities and rent that you’d otherwise pay for a shop, your repair business suffers less during the auto repair slow season . Here’s a breakdown of the average cost to set up a mobile mechanic business:

How to start a mobile mechanic business

  • Modern business appeal: Regardless of the product or service, today’s customers value convenience. If you can eliminate steps for them along the way, that’s great! Customers will place a premium on how you make their life easier. With this type of mobile model, you can bring your business directly to them. And with the right marketing approach, which we discuss later, you have a great chance of creating a highly profitable business!

Things to consider before setting up a mobile mechanic business

If you’re starting a mobile mechanic business, here are some things you need to consider:

1. Acquire the necessary licenses and register your business

After creating an auto repair business plan , you might need a license before you can begin operating as a mobile mechanic depending on your location. If you operate in Florida , you won’t need a business license. On the other hand, mobile mechanics in California need to obtain a repair business license from the Bureau of Automotive Repair (B.A.R.) to operate. Your local small business office can provide guidance and help with paperwork for registering your mobile auto repair business.

Then, contact the IRS in the US or the CRA in Canada regarding a sales tax identification number. This helps when you’re filing tax returns on auto parts, which you need a reseller’s license to sell. It’s also important to decide the kind of legal entity you want your repair business to be, such as a partnership, sole proprietorship, corporation, or limited liability company.

2. invest in the right auto repair equipment.

  • OBD scanner: A quality scan tool might be expensive but it’s worth the investment. It allows you to accurately diagnose issues with a range of different vehicles.
  • Heavy-duty jack: A high-quality jack that can withstand heavy usage will enable you to work under the car and conduct tire rotations and replacements.
  • Brake-related equipment: As mentioned earlier in this article, a vehicle’s brakes are susceptible to wear, even with pristine driving habits. To service brakes, mobile mechanics should invest in a brake pedal depressor and a bleeding kit.

3. Sign up for liability insurance coverage

Liability insurance can protect your business from incurring expensive damage costs. Examples of coverage includes:

  • Damage to property: As someone who regularly works on auto repair services for customer vehicles, this is a main damage risk you need to protect yourself against. It’s better safe than sorry, and this type of insurance coverage will keep you protected from devastating liability costs.
  • Physical injuries : Unlikely given the nature of your business, but still important to note and protect against.
  • Defense expenses: Again, a very unlikely form of coverage you will require. But it’s smart to cover all bases and protect your business as best you can.

Options for liability insurance coverage will vary based on the specifics of your mobile auto repair business. To find the right fit, conduct your own research online. Talk with others you know who own small businesses and get their recommendations.

While it may feel unnecessary now, this investment will provide peace of mind as you work on mobile auto repair and grow your business over time.

4. Purchase the right vehicle

Running a mobile mechanic service means that you’ll need accessibility to the relevant equipment, accessories, and tools at all times. Here are some things to note before investing in a shiny new vehicle:

  • Fuel economy: You don’t want to invest in a gas guzzler that’ll burn through your profits. Choose a vehicle that gives you decent fuel economy in both cities and on highways since mobile mechanics spend a lot of time on the road.
  • Cargo space: The vehicle should have enough capacity to transport all the equipment and the parts you need. If you’re running a diagnostics service, you’ll need less room than a mobile tire business.
  • Configuration: Is the interior space of your vehicle adjustable? Do you have flexible enough options to adapt based on what the specific job requires? Assess the configuration and versatility of the business vehicle with careful consideration.

5. Learn how to deal with the weather

Mobile mechanics often have to work in unpleasant weather conditions . They’re catering to the customers’ vehicles without any shelter from the sun or stormy weather.

Some ways mobile mechanics protect themselves from harsh weather are:

  • Use a make-shift shelter: Several mobile mechanics create a short-term shelter attached to their trucks or vans that they extend to cover a large area when needed. Others carry a gazebo that can be collapsed for portability at the expense of using space in their vehicle. This can be seen in the image below from Rough Luck Racing .

6. Market your business

Once everything else is in order, think about how you’ll market your mobile mechanic business. Many of the tips discussed here apply to developing a marketing strategy for any shop .

  • Conventional strategies: Sometimes old-school strategies are the most effective. Market your own business by dropping off flyers in high-traffic areas and incentivizing your existing customers to refer you to others.
  • Use social media: Social media marketing is a great way to establish your mobile mechanic service digitally. It’s all about showcasing customer testimonials and your specializations to a larger audience.
  • Website: There’s no substitute for a website to showcase your skills and positive customer reviews. Make sure that you have a contact page that lists all the ways your customers can reach out to you, considering mobile mechanics are often on the move.
  • Customer referrals: Referrals are a great way to generate new business for your shop. After all, your existing customers appreciate the quality service you provide! To ask for referrals, you will need to create an incentive program. Incentives can come in the form of accrued reward points or applied discounts on tire rotations, oil changes, basic repairs and other services. Promote this referral program across your marketing to existing customers and watch the new business roll in!
  • Email promotions: Your mobile repair business won’t gain any traction with generic messaging in email outreach. When it comes to email marketing , get creative! Use attention-grabbing subject lines. Offer compelling value to your customers. And have fun with the email copy itself.
  • Word-of-mouth: Sounds old school, right? But you’d be surprised how effective word-of-mouth marketing can be! Tell all your friends, family and previous work colleagues about the business. Ask them to share within their networks. Attend auto repair conferences and bring business cards with you. Get active with this networking process, as it can pay real dividends.

How to write an effective auto repair shop business plan

How to write an effective auto repair shop business plan

Key takeaways

  • An auto repair shop business plan will provide a blueprint for the launch of your business and increase your chances of success
  • Investors and lenders use business plans to determine whether your auto shop can reach profitability
  • There are seven main sections of an auto shop business plan that can help clarify the vision of your business

Want to start your own auto repair shop but don’t know where to start? Before jumping ahead and launching your new business on a whim, consider investing the extra time and effort in writing an auto repair shop business plan .

A business plan not only provides a roadmap to grow your business , but it actually increases the chances that your endeavor will succeed. Business owners who write a business plan generally grow 30% faster than businesses that don’t.

Roll up your sleeves and use this guide as your very own auto repair shop business plan template .

7 core sections of an auto repair shop business plan

Auto repair shop mechanic working underneath suspended vehicle

One of the main reasons for coming up with a business plan is to show readers—especially lenders and investors—that your business model is financially sound and can be profitable. It’s also a guide that helps you organize your thoughts, set goals, and clarify your vision. Essentially, it’s your business blueprint.

Beyond that, you can use a business plan to get feedback on your idea and determine whether it’s worth pursuing. Third parties, like other auto shop owners or financial advisors, can also read through your business plan and give you any suggestions or advice.

An auto repair shop business plan should include the following sections:

  • Executive summary
  • Business description
  • Market analysis
  • Services or product line
  • Operations and management
  • Marketing and sales
  • Financial factors

Each section serves a specific purpose and will help you plan your car repair business from every angle.

1. Executive summary

The executive summary kicks off your auto repair shop business plan and provides an overview of what’s to come. It should be clear, concise, and engaging enough to encourage people to read the rest of your business plan .

While this section is a culmination of all your research, keep it brief and to the point. Your executive summary should include the following:

  • Mission statement
  • Description of your business
  • The leadership team and number of employees
  • Auto repair services you offer
  • Where you’re doing business
  • Why you’ll succeed

Even though the executive summary is the first section of your business plan , it’s best to write it after you’ve completed all the other sections. This way, you have a thorough understanding of all aspects of your plan before you summarize it.

2. Business description

The business description is an overview of what your business actually does. It should cover:

  • What makes your company unique
  • Your competitive advantages
  • The customers you plan to serve

Describe the strengths of your business model and any competitive advantages your auto shop has. Do your mechanics have many years of experience and training that other local shops may not have? Were you able to secure prime real estate in a high-traffic area that can bring in more business?

You should also explain your target market and which customers will find value in your automotive services . For example, some auto shops may focus solely on everyday customers who want to service their personal vehicles. Other auto shops may aim to service commercial fleet vehicles for other businesses like electricians or landscaping companies.

3. Market analysis

It’s imperative to understand the state of the auto repair industry before you decide to launch your own small business . This section of the business plan provides proof to readers that there’s a healthy demand for your business to be successful.

First, determine if such a demand exists for a new automotive repair business in your area. You can come up with a general market analysis by tracking how many auto businesses are operating in your region and if they have an influx of customers.

The market analysis section should also include a competitive analysis. Find out what your competitors are doing right and opportunities for improvement. Scanning through Yelp reviews is an easy way to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of other car repair shops in your area. You can mimic tactics that are successful and capitalize on their areas of weakness.

Browse through our guide on how to do market research for helpful ideas on conducting market research for your business plan without having to spend a fortune.

4. Services or product line

Readers need to know how your business will make money. This section of your business plan is where you highlight the specific services and products that will help you reach profitability.

For example, maybe you want to offer general auto services, or perhaps you decide to specialize in certain areas—like transmission or engine repair , oil changes , or auto body repair. Be specific if you plan on serving a niche that sets you apart from competitors.

You can also include a list of different auto parts or products that you expect will generate revenue. For example, you can include price estimates of specific products, such as vehicle headlights, engine oil, or oil filters.

5. Operations and management

The operations and management section discusses what type of business structure you will form and who will be running your company.

Start by explaining the legal business entity you will be creating. You’ll have the option of forming a sole proprietorship , partnership, limited liability company (LLC) , or corporation. You can find more details in our guide to registering your business .

You can then lay out an organizational chart or company summary that shows the hierarchy of leadership in your car repair business. You’ll also want to highlight the years of experience each employee has and what specialties they bring to provide high-quality work and help your company succeed. If you’re the only employee, provide a professional overview of yourself and why you’re qualified to make your auto shop a success.

6. Marketing and sales

Readers will be interested in your auto repair marketing plan and how you expect to find new customers—specifically, which traditional and digital marketing channels you’ll use to draw up business.

When you start an auto mechanic shop, you need to advertise your business to not only attract new customers , but to also retain them and turn them into repeat buyers.

A professional-looking website will be a main area of focus. It will serve as the online face of your company and hub for incoming traffic from other digital marketing efforts, such as:

  • Email marketing
  • Referral program
  • Pay-per-click digital advertising
  • Social media marketing
  • Claiming your Yelp Business Page
  • Search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Content marketing

You can also use more traditional marketing ideas to advertise and grow your auto shop like business cards, referral incentives, or loyalty programs. In this part of your business plan , explain how you will use each of these different marketing channels to earn your first customers and get your business off the ground. For more ideas, see our guide on affordable auto repair marketing ideas .

Promote your business to local customers.

7. Financial factors

Those reading your auto repair shop business plan —especially lenders and investors—will need to know if your new business is financially viable. This section will include a financial plan and tangible evidence that your business is capable of succeeding.

Businesses that are already up and running can provide income statements, balance sheets , or cash flow statements. For those that haven’t launched yet, you can produce financial projections based on your startup costs and pricing —including equipment, tools, property rental, and monthly utilities. Once you have a detailed overview of your startup costs , you can set the pricing for your small business services .

This is also where you would include a funding request if you need one from an investor or lender. Explain the amount of funds you’re seeking and how you’ll allocate any investment dollars. On top of that, give an estimate of when you will reach profitability based on your financial projections.

Drive your auto repair business to success

You should aim to be as thorough as possible when writing your own business plan . If you put in the hard work upfront, your business will be better off in the long run.

Start going through each section of your plan and provide as much research and data to support your findings. Also, remember that it makes more sense to write your executive summary after completing all other sections.

Lastly, put yourself in an investor or lender’s shoes. What would you be looking for if you were thinking about investing in a small auto repair business? Make sure you can answer these six questions when starting your own business and you’ll be off to a great start.

  • Institute a program of superior customer service through rigorous evaluation of service experience.
  • Hire three more mechanics.

1.2 Keys to Success

In the auto repair industry  a company builds its client base one customer at a time and mostly through word of mouth marketing. With this in mind, the keys to success for F & R Auto Repair are:

  • High-quality work.
  • Constant contact with clients so as to keep them informed about the state of their automobile and the repair job progress.
  • Knowledgeable mechanics that are friendly, customer oriented, and will take the time to explain to customer the intricate nature of our business and our work.

1.3 Mission

The company will be a partnership with John Ford and Michael Ronald each owning 50% of the company. The company will be a limited liability company registered in the state of Washington. The firm will have facilities on 1312 1st Ave NW in Ballard, a neighborhood of Seattle. The facilities will contain a two-bay garage, office space and storage space for tools, parts, etc.

The company is seeking a  loan in order to finance the start of operations for the company. Each of the owners will be putting up some of their own capital as equity.

2.1 Start-up Summary

The data obtained for the start-up comes from research done in the Seattle area with other small mechanic shops who have started their own business. Inflation has been taken into account between the estimates of these fellow business owners (and when they started) and the current prices for expensed items.

Much of the equipment to go into the facilities such as tools, air compressors, etc., are currently owned by the two partners.

Auto repair shop business plan, company summary chart image

F & R Auto offers a wide range of services as outlined in the detailed sections below. It is ultimately the goal of the company to offer a one-stop facility for all auto servicing needs, including brakes, transmission, wheel alignment, etc. In this way the company can offer greater perceived value for the customer than many other shops which specialize in certain areas.

The industry is highly competitive with suppliers having a great deal of power in setting and negotiating the prices of their products and services to repair shops. In addition, because the customers see the service as undifferentiated and a “commodity” with little value separation between competitors, buyer power is also very high. Finally, the barriers to entry are moderately low, and the large number of competitors in this field, including substitutes (such as do-it-yourself work) mean that the pricing for such services are very competitive. The only way to have an advantage in this industry is a low cost leadership principal applied aggressively or to create higher switching costs through the building of strong business to customer ties.

F & R Auto will hire trained and certified mechanics who are able to prove they have superior customer awareness and interaction. It is the company’s professional people who will fulfill the firm’s contracts and goals. The largest part of the company’s expenses will be in labor costs.

3.1 Service Description

F & R Auto provides a wide range of auto repair services. These include:

  • Scheduled maintenance.
  • Wheel alignments, tires and rims.
  • Brake repair.
  • Comprehensive engine repair.
  • Transmission.

Each job or project will be on a reservation basis, although we will accept a small percentage of drive in repair work.

3.2 Competitive Comparison

The auto repair industry is highly competitive. Each company within this field has high capital costs, low margins, and a high intensity of competition.

Suppliers have a great deal of power in setting and negotiating the prices of their products and services to repair shops. This is due to the fact that the suppliers who absorb the greatest amounts of cash from repair shops are large auto part companies. These companies are more consolidated that the repair industry, have deeper pockets, an almost limitless number of substitute customers, and finally they are the single most important supplier to F & R’s industry. Therefore, these companies can set whatever price they wish to. Furthermore, labor is a supplier in this industry as well, and salaries for such individuals are well known and not very flexible.

In addition, because the customers see the service as undifferentiated and a “commodity” with little value separation between competitors (if they offer a suitable level of quality) buyer power is also very high. Additionally, the costs of our services are not cheap, and buyers are willing to search for the most favorable combination of price and acceptable service.

The barriers to entry and exit are moderately low in this industry. Switching costs are virtually non-existent and the costs to entry and exist the market are low. The large number of competitors in this field including substitutes mean that the pricing for such services are very competitive. The only way to have an advantage in this industry is a low cost leadership principal applied aggressively to all aspects of the business or to build up customer relations to a point where the switching costs are raised.

3.3 Technology

The technological revolution in computers has enhanced our abilities to diagnose and repair our clients vehicles. F &R will remain on the cutting edge by instituting the use of computer diagnostic equipment in its shop. The company will continue to seek new ways to provide a better service through technology.

3.4 Future Services

The company does not have any plans to create further services at this time.

Market Analysis Summary how to do a market analysis for your business plan.">

Since F & R will be able to service any vehicle on the road, including motorcycles and campers, it does not make any sense to segment our market. Our potential customer includes every household in Seattle that owns one or more vehicles. The industry does not have any seasonality that affects it.

4.1 Market Segmentation

The following table and chart show the market analysis for F & R Auto Repair.

4.2 Service Business Analysis

This section is covered in the Competitive Comparison section of the Plan.

4.2.1 Competition and Buying Patterns

While many customers looking to purchase automotive repair services are concerned with price, the primary concern is with building a relationship of trust between themselves and their service provider. A large number of people within the country have experienced or heard of bad service encounters within this market. As a person’s car is usually connected in one way or another with that individual’s livelihood, a dependable automobile is crucial. Therefore, many clients are willing to pay a little more for a mechanic they feel does a quality job and understands their needs.

An automotive repair company that can anticipate, meet, and even exceed customer’s needs can build a defensible position within the market place and acquire market share at the expense of other rivals.

4.2.2 Main Competitors

As stated before, the automotive repair market is very fragmented. The chief competitors in this industry for F & R are the high quality automobile dealerships and licensed service reps. This includes Toyota, Ford, Chrysler, and other major brand names. Within F & R’s immediate service vicinity, There is Rodham’s Toyota, Lester Ford and Woodmark’s Chrysler dealerships. Each of these direct competitors have a service facility. These competitors dominate the market place, have the largest market share, and have advantages such as specially trained personnel, access to lower priced parts and tools, and deep pockets. The other competitors are mostly “mom & pop” style outfits that make up the majority of the competition. For F & R this includes Dave’s Auto Repair, The Taller Mechanico, Kirkland Auto and Body, and Vancouver Auto. The advantages of these firms is that they can seek a low cost leadership strategy due to lower personnel costs. However, they have a much more fluid customer base and higher customer turnover.

F & R will seek to compete initially in the low cost strategy. At the same time, it will seek to provide a higher level of customer satisfaction by having more rigorous quality control and seeking ways to enhance the entire service experience (not just repairing a person’s car). In this way it will lock in a loyal customer base who value the client-service provider relationship.

4.2.3 Business Participants

The auto repair industry is highly fragmented. In fact, there are so many small providers that any company in this industry is facing a purely competitive environment. It is very difficult to create a differentiation, or niche, strategy in this environment and until F & R is able to establish a reputation for quality, on time, superior customer service, the company will seek a low cost role. Once it has achieved what management believes to be a sufficient reputation for its services along with a profitable customer base, the company plans to leverage this advantage into a differentiation strategy that will be able to charge more for its services.

Strategy and Implementation Summary

The following section outlines the company’s strategic focus in growing the business.

5.1 Competitive Edge

F & R Auto’s competitive edge lies in the vision of its partners, who understand better than many of their rivals that a service visit does not just include repairing a client’s car, it includes the entire service experience from the first time a client talks to their mechanic until they decide to stop driving. The long-term profitability of a service firm of this type lies in the repeat customer that finds F & R’s services an excellent experience, DESPITE the fact that they usually have suffered a inconvenient breakdown. The company will seek to examine ALL aspects of the service experience to seek ways to improve its customer satisfaction. In addition, all employees will be rigorously trained and retrained to think about customer satisfaction in order to create a self-sustaining company culture that revolves around this issue.

5.1.1 Positioning Statement

It is the express purpose of F & R to become the local leader in quality and service experience of all the small (non-dealerships) automotive repair firms within the Seattle area while maintaining a low cost plan. Once a reputation for quality and service experience is created, and an ongoing network of referrals is bringing in new business, the company plans to re-evaluate its strategy and positioning within the market to see if a differentiation strategy is viable. If so, this will allow the company to raise prices and increase profit margins in relation to its rivals. This in turn is expected to leverage long-term growth until F & R can reach a regional scope of operations.

5.2 Marketing Strategy

The company has a modest program of marketing its services that include the following:

  • Direct mailers.
  • Newspaper ads.
  • Yellow pages.
  • Referrals through other local businesses.

Each of these marketing approaches has the advantage of being low cost and creating service awareness. The company’s long-term marketing goals are to use local radio and TV ads similar to the Les Schwab Tire Center ads.

The company is also investigating the possibility of having a grand opening program that would feature discounts, food, a local radio disc jockey, and other promotional ideas.

5.2.1 Promotion Strategy

The principal owners of F & R Auto expect that a significant number of their pre-existing clients (where Ford and Ronald currently work) will desire to switch to F & R Auto to retain the services of their personal mechanics. This will provide a sufficient income until F & R can build up a reputation and see its marketing program take effect.

This promotion strategy will take the form of flyers, direct mailers, price discounts, and advertisements in newspapers and yellow pages. F & R does not desire to spend a large amount on marketing until the firm is ready to expand either into new facilities or open up new ones. It is estimated this will occur sometime after year five.

5.2.2 Pricing Strategy

F & R Auto exists in a purely competitive environment where each firm must be a price taker. In other words, the firm has no ability to affect the market price of its services, regardless of how many automobiles it repairs. In this case, therefore, marginal revenue (the revenue incurred by producing or servicing one more unit) is equal to the price charged. Furthermore, because the demand curve is essentially horizontal, F & R can service automobiles at total capacity without effecting the price.

What all of this means for F & R Auto is that the company must seek to charge its clients at the market price (or lower). Research has shown that the average price is approximately $400 per vehicle. As long as marginal costs do not exceed revenues, the method to maximize short-run profits is to service automobiles at maximum capacity. This means that F & R Auto can expect an ROA of approximately 4.5%

5.3 Sales Forecast

Since the automotive repair industry is, operationally, a job-shop environment, it is somewhat difficult to estimate sales. For job-shops, each individual product or service is tailored or unique to that job, and is only initiated once an order is made. However, the sales forecast reflect the professional opinion of Mr. Ford in how much sales he will make based on the following assumptions:

  • The number of clients Ford and Ronald can attract from their previous companies.
  • The effect of planned promotions and word-of-mouth marketing.
  • Current prices and costs of doing business.
  • The types of automobiles and jobs that will occur in every month.

For the most part, sales for an automobile repair firm are steady year round and reflect little seasonality.

The table and charts below outline the sales forecast.  Three years of annual sales and costs of sales are shown.  Twelve monthly tallies are included in the appendices.

Auto repair shop business plan, strategy and implementation summary chart image

Management Summary management summary will include information about who's on your team and why they're the right people for the job, as well as your future hiring plans.">

John Ford began working as an apprentice mechanic in his father’s shop in 1984. Since that time, he has worked for a variety of automotive shops and dealerships and has numerous certificates in automobile repair. During the past two years Mr. Ford has attended Bellevue Community College where he received an Associates degree in business administration in June of 2000.

Michael Ronald attended ITT Technical Institute where he received a certificate in electronics repair in 1980. In 1983 Mr. Ronald went to work for Jim Click Ford Dealership in Tucson AZ, where he worked on automotive electrical and electronic systems. Desiring to expand his skills, Mr. Ronald received a mechanic’s certificate in 1988 and since then has become certified in various automotive fields. In anticipation of F & R’s business needs, Mr. Ronald is taking night classes at Seattle University in marketing.

6.1 Personnel Plan

F & R’s initial staffing will consist of Ford and Ronald, plus Ronald’s wife who will act as a part-time office manager. The company will seek two entry level mechanics to be hired within a few months after the company is operating. Accounting, bookkeeping, and marketing services will be outsourced. The company’s intermediate goal is to have four full time, fully trained mechanics at the original facility, plus a full-time office manager. However, management has decided to await future developments before determining the best time to bring on such personnel.

7.3 Projected Cash Flow

The following table and chart are the projected cash flow figures for F & R.

Auto repair shop business plan, financial plan chart image

7.4 Projected Balance Sheet

The following table shows the projected balance sheet.

7.5 Business Ratios

The Business ratios give an overall idea of how profitable and at what risk level F & R Auto will operate at. The ratio table gives both time series analysis and cross-sectional analysis by including industry average ratios. As can be seen from the comparison between industry standards and F&R’s own ratios, there is some differences. Most of these are due to the fact that there is a very large variance in assets, liabilities, financing, and net income between companies in this industry due to the vast differences in company size.

Overall the company’s projections show a company that faces the usual risks of companies in this industry and one that will be profitable in the long-run. The company shows that it has higher SG&A costs than other competitors, however management has deliberately overstated costs and minimized profits in order to create a “safe” or “buffer” zone in case of hard times or other unforeseeable problems. Pre-tax return on net worth and pre-tax return on assets appears to be very high, especially within the first two years, however this is due to the fact that the company will be operating with fewer assets than most companies in the first few years until it can build up enough cash to acquire the tools and facilities that are desired and go beyond the “adequate” level.

How to Start a Mobile Mechanic Business

mobile auto mechanic business plan

If you’re thinking about becoming an auto mechanic or opening your own repair shop, there are a few reasons why having a mobile shop, as opposed to a traditional brick-and-mortar garage, could be a better option. Here are some reasons why you should have a mobile mechanic shop:

  • Lower overhead costs: Mobile repair shops require relatively low start-up costs since they do not need to acquire suitable space or costly equipment, such as vehicle lifts and engine hoists. This means that starting a mobile repair shop is a much more viable option for many would-be entrepreneurs.
  • Flexible work times: An additional perk is that you can set your own work hours. Many auto repair shops have regular 9-5 hours, but a mobile mechanic is available anywhere, which can be convenient if you have an unexpected problem outside normal business hours. If you’re not someone who likes to stick to a strict schedule, a mobile shop might be a great option for you.
  • Independence: Mobile service shops are much easier to start than most businesses, and usually only require one person to run them, meaning they can offer a lot of autonomy. However, there’s always the option to hire other employees, which makes it the best of both worlds for the company and the employee.
  • Potential for less competition: Even though there is typically an auto repair garage nearby, mobile mechanics may still be somewhat uncommon where you live. Because of this, you may tap into a previously unserved market.

In addition, if you are planning to open a garage in the future, starting a mobile repair shop can be a great first step. This will help you save money and begin to establish your brand.

What should I know before deciding to open an independent repair shop?

There’s still a lot of responsibility involved in opening your own mobile mechanic service. A few key tasks include the following:

  • Managing your own finances, including inventory and taxes
  • Providing top-notch customer service
  • Administrative work, such as scheduling and payment processing
  • Handling the marketing of your business

Before opening a mobile mechanic shop, you should be prepared to handle these tasks yourself or hire a specialist to help you. Purchasing specialised software for budgeting and accounting, such as the kind offered by Workshop Software , can also be a great cost-efficient way to help you manage your business.

Step-by-step guide to starting a mobile mechanic service shop

Acquire the necessary training

If you haven’t already, you’ll need to look into completing the necessary training to become qualified in the classes of auto repair you want to provide. This usually involves completing an apprenticeship and applying for a licence through your local Bureau of Industry .

Decide what auto repair services you’ll offer

What services you can offer as a mobile mechanic depends on a handful of factors, such as what types of certifications you already have, what types of tools you can acquire, and what prices you can reasonably charge.

You’ll also want to think about your surrounding market and what niches you want to focus on. As a mobile mechanic, you may want to leave heavy-duty, long-term jobs to the surrounding garages and focus on delivering quick, efficient services to your customers.

This is why some of the best services to provide as a mobile mechanic require relatively few tools and a fast turnover time.

Common car emergencies like dead batteries and flat tires are perfect for mobile mechanics, as you can save drivers the necessity of calling a tow truck by arriving straight to their location. Routine maintenance procedures like oil changes, brake pad replacements, and tire rotations and alignment are also good options that are always in demand.

Some other types of service to consider are as follows:

  • Under-hood part replacement: Many car parts in the engine area are simple and quick to replace, including spark plugs, belts, and alternators.
  • Agricultural equipment repair: This is a great speciality if you live in a rural area, particularly since many land-owners prefer not to drive their equipment on major roads to reach an auto shop if they can avoid it.
  • Construction equipment repair: While working on construction equipment can sometimes require more resources than you might have as a mobile mechanic, basic check-ups and maintenance can be a steady service option.
  • Car inspections and safety checks: Both car inspections and safety checks are quick, common, and require few tools, making them another perfect service niche.
  • Electric vehicle (EV) repair: Considering electric and hybrid vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, you may also want to consider tailoring your services to meet the increased demand for EV mechanics.

As a mobile mechanic, you’ll also have to decide what areas you’ll serve. The distance you’re willing to go for a job is up to you, but it’s a good idea to have set parameters to offer your customers from the start. A common setup is for mobile mechanics to have a specified range that they serve, then charge an additional fee for work done outside that range.

Find the right workshop

Since you’ll be working out of your vehicle, choosing the right one is important. Here are some factors you may want to consider as a mobile auto mechanic:

  • Reliability: Because your profits depend on how easily you can get around, reliability is a must for mobile mechanic vehicles. The less time and energy you spend on your own vehicle maintenance, the more you can spend on other people’s.
  • Storage: It’s important to consider how much cargo space you will need for your repair business and weigh this against start-up costs and fuel efficiency. The more you carry around with you, the lower your gas mileage will be. This may be a worthy trade-off if you can perform a wider variety of services.
  • Fuel economy: Good fuel economy is also essential, and a small difference can add up over time. Paying for fuel will likely be one of your major regular expenses, so it’s worth prioritising.
  • Special features: Will you need your vehicle to tow around equipment, power your tools, or store items in drawers? Think about what elements will be important to you, including factors such as comfort and accessibility.

You may also want to consider whether your vehicle can carry your entire inventory or whether you should consider additional storage space. This may be useful if you plan to frequently sell replacement auto parts to your customers.

It’s important to note that your vehicle will also constitute the premises of your business under the law of most Australian states, so you’ll need your vehicle approved to begin operating your auto repair shop.

Invest in your equipment

You’ll need to ensure that you can afford to invest in the right tools for the job. Exactly what you’ll need will vary depending on what services you decide to offer as an auto mechanic, but you’ll definitely need the basics, such as a good drill, a carjack, a jump-starter, wrenches and screwdrivers.

You’ll also need to acquire some non-mechanical equipment, such as a card reader for processing payments, a computer, and business software.

Choose a name and register your business

Choosing a name and trademarking your mechanic business.

Choosing a name is an important part of branding your mobile mechanic business. You want your business name to be memorable and descriptive, so it can easily become recognisable.

If you plan to trademark your auto mechanic shop name, you’ll also want to make sure it’s unique to you and that no one else has trademarked it. Otherwise, you risk being confused with another business or not being able to register your products and services under your business name.

Auto repair business licence and registration

It’s also necessary to register your repair business with your state government and acquire a licence to operate it. Requirements will vary depending on your state’s specifications, but you’ll usually have to have at least an auto mechanic certification, a strong business plan, and adequate premises to be approved.

You can also take the new business owner quiz provided by the Australian Business Licence and Information Service (ABLIS) to find out exactly what’s required.

What business structure is right for you?

You’ll also have to decide what type of auto mechanic business to register as. You can choose between being a sole trader, being in a partnership, or starting a proprietary company .

Each structure has pros and cons, and which one is right for you depends on how you want to run your mobile mechanic business and what you see for the future. Do you want to grow your business to a regional or national scale? How many employees do you plan to hire, if any?

As a sole trader, you are responsible for your company. This is a great option if you want a small repair business that you have full ownership of. Both partnerships and proprietary companies offer more potential for growth but may result in less control on your part.

Market your business wisely

Marketing can make or break a business; it doesn’t matter how good your services are if no one knows about them.

To get your auto mechanic business out there, look into potential advertising options, research your target market, and consider designing a logo. Focus on what you offer your clients and what you want to emphasise about your business, whether convenience, friendliness, or know-how.

Online advertising is particularly important, and even more so for mobile mechanics. If someone breaks down on the side of their road and searches for an auto mechanic, you’ll definitely want to appear in the results. Consider strategies like search engine optimisation (SEO) and targeted advertising to help you get there.

If you have the resources available, you may even want to hire a marketing professional or graphic designer to help you.

Being a Mobile Mechanic

One option for those with a background in mechanics is to start a mobile repair business, which can be profitable, and provide the freedom and flexibility that comes with being your own boss. Mobile mechanics are a growing profession due to the number of people who own cars and the number of people who do not have the time to take their car to a mechanic. I hope this article has given you the necessary information to help you join the ranks of successful entrepreneurs.

This step involves making important decisions regarding the legal framework, registration, and licensing of your business.

1. Choose the appropriate business structure: Determine whether your business will operate as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), or corporation. 4. Evaluate the Value Proposition: Determine the unique value your mobile mechanic auto repair service offers to customers. Consider factors such as convenience, expertise, and quality of service when setting your prices.

Equally important is identifying the equipment needed to provide these services. As a mobile mechanic auto repair service, it is imperative to have a well-equipped fleet of vans to ensure flexibility and mobility. Some essential equipment includes:

  • Diagnostic Tools: Invest in high-quality diagnostic tools and software that can effectively identify and address vehicle issues.
  • Mechanical Tools: Equip your vans with a wide range of mechanical tools, including wrenches, socket sets, multimeters, and specialty tools for specific repairs.

Next, determine the most effective marketing channels to reach your target audience. Consider leveraging both digital and traditional marketing methods to maximize your reach. Online strategies may include creating a mobile-friendly website, optimizing your site for search engines, and utilizing social media platforms to engage with potential customers. Besides, it is easier to start and run a mobile auto mechanic repair company from scratch to profitability without leveraging on a known brand name. People will patronize your services based on your ability to fix their automobiles, accessibility and pricing as against relying on a brand name.

Please note that most of the big and successful auto mechanic repair companies and mobile auto mechanic repair companies around started from the scratch and they were able to build a solid business brand.

It takes dedication, hard work and determination to achieve business success and of course you can build your own mobile auto mechanic repair company to become a successful company in your area of specialization and even go ahead to start competing at the national level.

6. Know the Possible Threats and Challenges You Will Face

If you decide to start your own mobile auto mechanic repair company today, one of the major challenges you are likely to face is the presence of well established auto mechanic repair garages and of course mobile auto mechanic repair companies in your target market location.

The only way to avoid this challenge is to create your own market; concentrate on households, individuals and also start-up transportation companies, haulage companies and start-up businesses who need the services of a mobile auto mechanic repair company from time to time.

Other threats and challenges include; mature markets, bad economy (economy downturn), stiff competition, volatile costs, and rising fuel prices.

So also, unfavorable government policies, seasonal fluctuations, demographic/social factors, downturn in the economy which is likely to affect consumer spending and of course emergence of new competitors within the same location where yours is located.

There is hardly anything you can do as regards these threats and challenges other than to be optimistic that things will continue to work for your good.

7. Choose the Most Suitable Legal Entity (LLC, C Corp, S Corp)

When considering starting a mobile auto mechanic repair company, the legal entity you choose will go a long way to determine how big the business can grow; some mobile auto mechanic repair companies design their business and services for regional market, while others for national market.

Generally, you have the option of either choosing a general partnership, limited liability company which is commonly called an LLC, or a sole proprietorship for a business such as mobile auto mechanic repair company. Ordinarily, sole proprietorship should have been the ideal business structure for a small scale mobile auto mechanic repair company especially if you are just starting out with a moderate start-up capital.

But people prefer limited liability company for obvious reasons. As a matter of fact, if your intention is to grow the business and operate all across the United States of America, then choosing sole proprietor is not an option for you. Limited Liability Company , LLC or even general partnership will cut it for you.

For example, Setting up an LLC protects you from personal liability. If anything goes wrong in the business, it is only the money that you invested into the limited liability company that will be at risk. This is not so for sole proprietorships and general partnerships.

Limited liability companies are simpler and more flexible to operate and you don’t need board of directors, shareholders meetings and other managerial formalities.

Upgrading to a ‘C’ corporation or ‘S’ corporation will give you the opportunity to grow your mobile auto mechanic repair company so as to compete with major players in the industry; you will also be able to generate capital from venture capital firms, you will enjoy separate tax structure, and you can easily transfer ownership of the company; you will enjoy flexibility in ownership and in your management structures.

On the other hand, if you just want to protect your company’s logo and other documents or software that are unique to you or even operation concepts, then you can go ahead to file for intellectual property protection.

If you want to register your trademark, you are expected to begin the process by filing an application with the USPTO. The final approval of your trademark is subject to the review of attorneys as required by USPTO.

  • If the Auto Mechanic hires employees, a state Employer Number is required
  • Employment Agreement (offer letters)

13. Raise the Needed Startup Capital

Starting a standard and well equipped mobile auto mechanic repair business is not capital intensive especially if you choose to launch the business on a small scale and you are the only full-time employee on your payroll.

Purchasing a truck/van (for easy movement of your tool box and equipment) and of course the purchase of tool box and equipment are part of what will consume a large chunk of your start-up capital. In essence, if you choose to start the business on a small scale, you may not have the need to go source for fund to finance the business.

No doubt when it comes to financing a business, one of the first things and perhaps the major factors that you should consider is to write a good business plan.

If you have a good and workable business plan document in place, you may not have to labor yourself before convincing your bank, investors and your friends to invest in your business. Here are some of the options you can explore when sourcing for start-up capital for your mobile auto mechanic repair business;

  • Raising money from personal savings and sale of personal stocks and properties
  • Raising money from investors and business partners
  • Sell of shares to interested investors
  • Applying for loan from your bank/banks
  • Pitching your business idea and applying for business grants and seed funding from government, donor organizations and angel investors
  • Source for soft loans from your family members and your friends .

14. Choose a Suitable Location for your Business

A mobile auto mechanic repair business is a business that can be situated in any location as long as there are people and organizations that own automobiles there. As a matter of fact, you can start your mobile auto mechanic repair business in your house and still grow the business to profitability.

15. Hire Employees for your Technical and Manpower Needs

When it comes to starting a standard mobile auto mechanic repair company, you will need a truck/van, complete auto repair toolbox and other related equipment that will aid you in carrying out your job. It is important to state that this equipment can be purchased as fairly used if you are operating on a low budget.

When it comes to choosing between renting and leasing a facility for your mobile auto mechanic repair company, the size of the mobile auto mechanic company you want to own, and your entire budget for the business should influence your choice.

Besides, you don’t need a big office/garage to operate from since you will be going out to attend to your clients as against your clients bringing their automobile to your garage.

As regards the number of employees that you are expected to kick start the business with, you would need to consider your finance before making that decision. Averagely, when it comes to starting a standard mobile auto mechanic business on a large scale, you would need the services of the following professionals;

Chief Operating Officer (you can occupy this position), Admin and HR Manager, Marketing and Sales Executive (Business Developer), Accountant, Mobile Auto Mechanics and Customer Services Executive/Front Desk Officer.

Please note that if you are operating the business as a one man show, then you must be ready to occupy all of the above positions and also outsource some key functions like bookkeeping and accounting et al to professionals when the need arises.

Over and above, you would need a minimum of 3 to 7 key staff members to effectively run a medium scale but standard mobile auto mechanic repair company.

The Service Delivery Process of the Business

The operation process as it relates to mobile auto mechanic repair companies depend on the nature of the repair work to be carried out. Basically, mobile mechanics go to their clients to fix their vehicles or do pre-purchase used car buying inspection (PPI) at their homes or any location near them.

When a client calls a mobile auto mechanic, it is the responsibility of the mobile auto mechanic to quickly ask useful questions that will help him know the tools and perhaps spare parts to carry along when going to the location where the client wants him to come to.

When the mobile auto mechanic gets to the location, he will access the repair job to be carried out on the vehicle and the spare parts to be purchased or required engine oil/lubricants to be used. The total cost of executing the job will be given to the client and once an agreement is reached, the job will be carried out and the mobile auto mechanic will be paid as agreed.

16. Write a Marketing Plan Packed with ideas & Strategies

The fact that the entry barrier for starting a small scale mobile auto mechanic repair business is low means that there is bound to be more players in the industry no matter the location you choose to start yours. In essence, you must come up with creativity and innovations if you must carve out a market for yourself within the available market in your community, city, state or country.

So, when you are drafting your marketing plans and strategies for your mobile auto mechanic repair company, make sure that you create a compelling personal and company profile.

Aside from your qualifications and experience, it is important to clearly state in practical terms what you have been able to achieve in time past as it relates to the auto mechanic repairs industry. This will help boost your chances in the market place when marketing your services.

  • Engage the services of marketing executives and business developers to carry out direct marketing for you.

17. Develop Strategies to Boost Brand Awareness and Create a Corporate Identity

Whether you’re looking to raise funding from private investors or to get a loan from a bank (like a SBA loan) for your auto repair shop, you will need to prepare a solid business plan.

In this article we go through, step-by-step, all the different sections you need in your auto repair business plan. Use this template to create a complete, clear and solid business plan that get you funded.

1. Executive Summary

The executive summary of a business plan gives a sneak peek of the information about your business plan to lenders and/or investors.

Though the executive summary is the first and the most important section, it should normally be the last section you write because it’s the summary of the different sections included in your business plan.

Why do you need a business plan for your auto repair shop?

The purpose of a business plan is to secure funding through one of the following channels:

  • Obtain bank financing or secure a loan from other lenders (such as a SBA loan )
  • Obtain private investments from investment funds, angel investors, etc.
  • Obtain a public or private grant

How to write an executive summary for your auto repair shop?

Provide a precise and high-level summary of every section that you have included in the business plan. The information and the data you include in this segment should grab the attention of potential investors and lenders immediately. Ensure that the executive summary doesn’t exceed 2 pages in total.

The executive summary usually consists of the 5 major sub-sections that include:

  • Business overview : introduce your auto repair shop and its type or concept. For instance, you may offer a body repair shop, auto glass repair shop, auto systems expert shop, etc. Also, provide a brief of your shop’s size and a list of services offered
  • Market analysis : introduce the market and mention the service radius, average income of the target audience, and their demographic distribution. Also, mention the problem that your auto repair shop will solve alongside the total competitor count within your service radius
  • People : introduce the management team and their industry experience. Mention your business partner(s), if any. Give an overview of the staffing requirements and the reporting hierarchy
  • Financial plan : how much profit and revenue do you expect in the next 5 years? When will you reach the break-even point and start making profits ? It is ideal to include a chart depicting your key financials such as revenue, gross profits, and net profit
  • Funding ask : what loan/investment/grant are you seeking? How much do you need? How long will this last?

2. Business Overview

The Business Overview segment of your auto repair shop’s business plan will introduce your company and try to answer some important questions that potential investors and lenders may have . Here is a sample list of questions that you must try to address in the company overview section:

  • Why are you opening an auto repair shop?
  • Where is your shop located? Why did you choose that location?
  • What type of auto repair shop will you open?
  • What services will you offer? At what prices?
  • What will be your operating days / hours?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • How many customers can you serve per week / per month?
  • What will be the legal structure of your company?

a) History of the Project

Any business must have three components:

  • Passion & experience of the business owner
  • The rationale behind you starting this business today

Passion & Experience

You must be passionate about the business and demonstrate the same to the potential lenders and/or investors through the business plan.

Also, you must have some experience or training in this type of business. Maybe, you worked as a repair technician somewhere, or maybe, you have the necessary training & education.

The business must try to resolve some issues in its current area of operation. For instance, there may not be any dedicated auto paint repair shop in the area and residents there need to travel far to get the job done. Thus, an auto paint repair shop there will solve the problem that auto owners face.

b) Business Model

Describe the business model that you will adopt in this sub-section. Here you must answer the 2 following questions:

  • Will you acquire an existing auto repair shop and remodel it, or will you start your shop from scratch?

What are the different types of auto repair shops?

For example, you may open any of the following types of auto repair shops:

  • Auto System Expert : In this model, you will specialize in the survey of a vehicle’s key systems such as breaks, gears, engine, etc. This model has a high revenue potential
  • Auto Repair Service Technicians : This is the most standard model where you will perform basic checks like electricals, oil fluid levels, etc. This model thrives on regular repeat customers since vehicle manufacturers recommend servicing every 10k to 12k miles or every 12 months. So, those who drive a lot will be more likely to pay regular visits
  • Auto Body Repair Service : In this business model, you will be dealing with vehicles involved in accidents and crashes. Though it is highly unlikely that you will get regular (or high volume) customers, the revenue earned per sale is very high. The model involves fixing broken parts, scratches, replacing damaged parts, etc.
  • Diagnostic Technicians : In this model, you will perform skilled checks for underlying vehicle issues. Such issues cannot be seen from the surface and hence, require a higher level of skill compared to regular service technicians
  • Auto Glass Repair : In this model, you will focus on repairing glass-related auto parts such as windows, windshields, etc. This model also has high-income potential for each order, but there will be times when you get customers who don’t want a complete replacement and require fixing only small cracks, scratches, etc.
  • Auto Repair Painters : In this model, you will engage in vehicle repainting and stylizing & visual customizations as per customer requirements. The revenue potential of this model is often tied to pollution levels. Thus, places with high environmental pollution will offer more customers looking for a fresh coat of paint

c) Products & Services

It is needless to say that the products and services you will offer will depend on the auto repair shop model you are selecting. It is very important to outline the products & services that you will offer so that the investors know exactly which offerings will attract more revenue for your business.

Here is a sample list of products & services that you may offer (but remember to list only those that are relevant to your business model):

  • Brake repair services
  • Tire rotation services
  • Tire change
  • Transmission services
  • Oil & filter change
  • Scheduled maintenance

Make sure that you are listing all services because generally auto repair services will not offer hundreds of products & services. They are quite limited and hence, listing them all is possible.

d) Pricing Strategy

In addition with the list of services you offer, provide an estimated price range for specific services. There should not be extreme differences between you and your competitors.

For example, you cannot charge twice as much as your competitors charge for a simple oil & filter change. If you try to do that, you will fail to attract customers.

Include a pricing list for the products and services that you will offer. You don’t need to provide precise numbers. Average pricing will do.

For example, you can provide an average price range for tire replacement because tire prices will vary depending on the manufacturer, model, type, country of origin, etc.

Offering a pricing list, or at least average prices, is important as it will allow investors to tie your pricing strategy with your financial projections later on (more on that below).

mobile auto mechanic business plan

e) Legal Structure

Finally, your business overview section should specify the legal structure of your business.

Is this a corporation or a partnership (LLC)? Who are the investors? How much equity percentage do they own? Is there a Board of Directors? If so, whom? Do they have experience in the industry?

3. Auto Repair Market Overview

A complete understanding of the market where you want to operate is important for the success of your business.

For example, if you want to open an auto glass repair shop in an area where most of the vehicle owners usually come for regular servicing, it might not be a viable business model for the area.

Similarly, if your auto repair shop is located in a low-income neighborhood where only a small percentage of the residents own private vehicles, your business may not succeed.

Break this section into three sub-sections that will include:

a) Market Trends

Understanding market trends will not be easy. It may require a lot of research, unless you already have strong experience (as a car mechanic for example) in the area.

The best way to perform your research will be to talk with your potential customers. Also, you can study competing auto repair shops to get an idea of the type of customers they receive, the services they provide, etc.

Some common questions you may ask the target audience include:

  • What type of vehicles do they drive or prefer to drive?
  • How many vehicles do they have in a family?
  • What type of auto repair services do they usually require?
  • How often do they go to a repair shop?

b) Competition analysis

Studying your competitors’ business models is vital. You need to understand what makes them successful or why they fail. A clear understanding of their products and services, marketing strategies, etc., will allow you to provide a better service.

If your competitors are offering nearly the same products & services, then what is their market share and how do they market their products & services to attract new customers?

It is always a good idea to do some research (if necessary, physically visit your competitors without revealing your business intentions) and create a comparative table summarizing their product & service offerings, marketing strategies, target audience, etc.

Here is a sample table that you can use:

The table you will create will depend on what information you need and want to include based on your proposed business model.

c) SWOT Analysis

Try to provide a SWOT analysis. It must be crisp and highly focused. SWOT stands for Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats.

Here is a sample that you can use as a reference:

  • Strengths : 20 years of experience in car body repair and customization service, a team of highly specialized diagnostic technicians, etc.
  • Weaknesses : Startup cost, zero reputation, little marketing experience
  • Opportunities : High accident-prone zone, no car body repair shop within a 15-mile radius
  • Threats : Low-cost service providers

A clear understanding of your strengths and weakness along with opportunities and threats in the real market can help you to design your marketing strategy. It also helps potential investors to assess the risk and reward profile of your business.

d) Customers

This is the sub-section where you will provide a detailed analysis of your target audience. You will expand the data points your provided earlier in the Business Overview segment.

Some important points that you must include in your customer analysis include:

  • Age and gender distribution (you can get local demographic data from census.gov )
  • Driver gender ratio
  • Number of vehicles per family
  • Average monthly income and disposable income
  • Average bill size per visit
  • Average yearly spending on auto repair services
  • Vehicle type & brand preferences

You can add as many data points as required to validate your business decision. The idea here is to display your deep understanding of the target audience and the needs, preferences, and expectations. This knowledge can help you to tailor your products & services to attract new customers.

mobile auto mechanic business plan

4. Sales & Marketing

This is the section of your business plan where you outline your customer acquisition strategy. Try to answer the following questions:

  • What are your Unique Selling Points (USPs)?
  • What are the different marketing strategies you will use?
  • How do you intend to track the success of your marketing strategy?
  • What is your CAC or customer acquisition cost?
  • What is your marketing budget?
  • What introductory promos and offers do you intend to provide for attracting new customers?

What marketing channels do auto repair shops use?

A few marketing channels that auto repair shops typically use are:

  • Signage, billboards
  • PPC ads, Facebook ads, etc.
  • Print media
  • Loyalty programs
  • Online local listing (Google Business)
  • Content marketing (share content like vehicle maintenance tips, safe driving tips, etc.) on platforms like blogs, social media, etc.
  • Word of mouth

You must have a fair and nearly accurate estimate of your marketing budget. Therefore, make sure to budget for marketing accordingly in your financial projections.

mobile auto mechanic business plan

What are your Unique Selling Propositions (USPs)?

In other words, how do you differentiate yourself vs. competitors? This is very important as you might need to win customers from competitors.

A few examples of USPs are:

  • High quality service
  • Location : you store is closer to a busy road and/or to where your customers live
  • Partnerships with car manufacturer brands that refer you to their customers
  • Loyalty reward programs : X number of free tune-ups, alignments, and brake services per year

Your USPs will depend on your business model, competitor analysis, and target audience. Whatever your USPs are, it should appeal to your potential customers and attract them.

5. Management & People

You must address 2 things here:

  • The management team and their experience/track record
  • The organizational structure: the different team members and who reports to whom

Small businesses often fail because of managerial weaknesses. Thus, having a strong management team is vital. Highlight the experience and education of senior managers that you intend to hire to oversee your auto repair shop business.

Describe their duties, responsibilities, and roles. Also, highlight their previous experience and explain how they succeeded in their previous roles.

It is also important that you explain how their experiences and qualifications help you in implementing the auto repair shop you are proposing. If they have specialized training and education (such as automotive technician training, collision & auto body repair training, etc.), add that information.

Organization Structure

Even if you haven’t already hired a service manager, mechanics, helpers, and other relevant staff members, you must provide a chart of the organizational structure outlining the different teams, roles and their reporting lines.

6. Financial Plan

The financial plan is perhaps, with the executive summary, the most important section of any business plan.

Indeed, a solid financial plan tells lenders that your business is viable and can repay the loan you need from them. If you’re looking to raise equity from private investors, a solid financial plan will prove them your auto repair shop is an attractive investment.

There should be 3 sections to your financial plan section:

  • Your historical financials (only if you already operate the business and have financial accounts to show)
  • The startup costs of your project (if you plan to purchase new repair equipment, renovate your facilities, etc.)
  • The 5-year financial projections

a) Historical Financials (if any)

In the scenario where you already have some historical financials (a few quarters or a few years), include them. A summary of your financial statements in the form of charts e.g. revenue, gross profit and net profit is enough, save the rest for the appendix.

If you don’t have any, don’t worry, most new businesses don’t have any historical financials and that’s ok. If so, jump to Startup Costs instead.

b) Startup Costs

Before we expand on 5-year financial projections in the following section, it’s always best practice to start with listing the startup costs of your project. For an auto repair business, startup costs are all the expenses you incur before you open your auto repair shop and starting making sales. These expenses typically are:

  • The lease deposit for the commercial space you rent (if you don’t buy it)
  • The design and renovation of the existing facilities
  • The auto repair equipment

Assuming you do not buy the land and the building but decide to rent instead, typically startup costs are anywhere from $67,200 to $225,500 for a typical small (5,000 sq. ft.) auto repair shop.

c) Financial Projections

In addition to startup costs, you will now need to build a solid financial model over 5 years.

Your financial projections should be built using a spreadsheet (e.g. Excel or Google Sheets) and presented in the form of tables and charts in your business plan.

As usual, keep it concise here and save details (for example detailed financial statements , financial metrics, Key Performance Indicators , key assumptions used for the projections) for the appendix instead.

Your financial projections should answer at least the following questions:

  • How much revenue do you expect to generate over the next 5 years?
  • When do you expect to break even ?
  • How much cash will you burn until you get there?
  • What’s the impact of a change in pricing (say 20%) on your margins?
  • What is your average customer acquisition cost?

You should include here your 3 financial statements (income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement ). This means you must forecast:

  • The number of customers over time ;
  • Your expected revenue ;
  • Operating costs to run the business ;
  • Any other cash flow items (e.g. capex, debt repayment, etc.).

When projecting your revenue, make sure to sensitize pricing and the number of customers as a small change in these assumptions will have a big impact on your revenues.

7. Funding Ask

This is the last section of your auto repair shop business plan. Now that we have explained what your auto repair business model is about, what’s your strategy, where you go and how you get there, this section must answer the following questions:

  • How much funding do you need?
  • What financial instrument(s) do you need: is this equity or debt, or even a free-money public grant?
  • How long will this funding last?
  • Where else does the money come from? If you apply for a SBA loan for example, where does the other part of the investment come from (your own capital, private investors?)

If you raise debt:

  • What percentage of the total funding the loan represents?
  • What is the corresponding Debt Service Coverage Ratio ?

If you raise equity

  • What percentage ownership are you selling as part of this funding round?
  • What is the corresponding valuation of your business?

Use of Funds

Any auto repair business plan should include a clear use of funds section. This is where you explain how the money will be spent.

Will you spend most of the loan / investment in paying your employees’ salaries? Or will it cover mostly the cost for the lease deposit and the machines and equipment?

Those are very important questions you should be able to answer in the blink of an eye. Don’t worry, this should come straight from your financial projections. If you’ve built solid projections like in our financial plan template for auto repair shops , you won’t have any issues answering these questions.

Moscow-City – The Moscow International Business Center

The Moscow Intenational Business Center

Moscow-City is an iconic location for life and work in Russia’s capital. Enormous skyscrapers, business centers, the best restaurants and retail spaces – all this is concentrated in one place. The ultramodern Moscow-City towers are truly striking in their outward appearance, and the layout of the apartments inside and the fantastic views that can be seen from the higher floors are nothing short of impressive.

This skyscraper compound, often referred to as Moskva-City, is the Russian take on Manhattan, where businessmen strike multi-million dollar deals daily while ordinary life goes on next door. Its state of the art spaces offer the ultimate convenience. The infrastructure of this business district is so well-developed that anyone can find something interesting for themselves here: from residential apartments to boutiques, clubs, exhibitions and more.

When the foundations for the Moscow-City skyscrapers were laid, a special kind of concrete was used, the properties of which are amplified by many times compared to standard concrete. Even in the event of a plane crashing into one of the buildings, the structural integrity of the towers will be preserved.

The architects of the Moscow-City Business Center have created a unique locality that has integrated into itself the hub of the capital’s business life and a whole ensemble of historical monuments. Anyone can admire the beauty of these skyscrapers from within or without the compound. There are also a number of apartments for sale or rent available in the MIBC itself. But first, let’s have a look at some more interesting facts about the financial core of Russia’s capital.

How It All Began

The history of Moscow-City goes all the way back to 1992. The government of Moscow at the time wanted to bring into existence its own skyscrapers like the ones in London or New York. And the idea caught on. In 1992 the project for the construction of the huge “Moscow-City” MIBC compound was enthusiastically approved, kick-starting the painstaking preparatory works. The original intention was that the skyscrapers would only house office space. However, as time went on, the towers began to welcome in ordinary residents who wanted to live on the territory of this business and finance hub.

Moscow-City is undoubtedly a city within a city. Its grandeur is mind-boggling. It is perfect in every way: from location to infrastructure. And today, anyone can get a feel of the atmosphere of the “capital city” of Russia’s business world – many of the apartments in Moscow-City are available for rent. Any citizen of Russia and even nationals of other countries can make use of these offers.

What It’s Like in 2021

Today Moscow-City is not just a magnificent and fascinating sight, but also a real hub for the work, life and leisure of thousands. Its infrastructure is organized in such a way that there is no need to leave the territory of the “city within a city” at all. This business district contains everything one may need for work and recreation. And if one does decide to venture out into the larger metropolis, the MIBC’s three subway stations make this remarkably simple to do.

Moscow-City stands on the Presnenskaya Embankment . Each of the buildings in the district has a name, which simplifies its identification. Some of the buildings form complexes that are united under one name, such as the Neva Towers and the Naberezhnaya Tower complex of two skyscrapers and one high rise. There are a total of 16 towers in the MIBC, of which the most popular are:

  • Moscow-City Central Core;
  • Tower 2000;
  • Evolution Tower;
  • Imperia Tower;
  • City of Capitals (Moscow Tower and St. Petersburg Tower);
  • Steel Peak Tower;
  • Federation Tower;
  • Mercury City Tower;
  • OKO Tower Complex.

Moscow-City Central Core

This is the most complex building within the MIBC compound. Its total floor area is a whopping 1 476 378 sqft (450 000 m²). It consists of two massive parts, each of which boasts a truly impressive infrastructure. The underground part includes 3 Moscow Metro stations, a parking lot for automobiles and a shopping mall. The aboveground part houses a concert hall and a hotel.

Tower 2000 is a skyscraper having 34 stories. Its total floor area is 200 318 sqft (61 057 m²), most of which is office space. The key feature of this skyscraper is its direct connection to the Bagration Bridge, which has its own shopping arcade. The tower has everything one may need while working here, including a large parking lot and several restaurants.

Evolution Tower

This elegant structure is 836 feet (255 m) high – that’s a whole 54 stories! The total floor area here is 554 462 sqft (169 000 m²). The Evolution Tower’s key feature is that it has its own Wedding Hall. This skyscraper houses large office spaces, a parking lot and several restaurants.

Imperia Tower

MIBC’s Imperia Tower is the undeniable focal point of the MIBC’s business life. Its height is 784 feet (239 m), which means one can hold conferences and resolve key business matters on the 59 th floor! And that really is amazing! The tower has everything: offices, hotels, restaurants and parking lots. But if you want a truly unforgettable experience, visit the viewing platform! It is situated on the 58 th floor and a simply astounding view of Moscow can be seen from it.

Moscow Tower and St. Petersburg Tower

The Moscow and St. Petersburg Towers are the chief representatives of the MIBC. The Moscow Tower has 76 stories and is 990 feet (302 m) high, while the St. Petersburg Tower has 65 stories and stands 843 feet (257 m) tall. Both towers offer fantastic views of the capital city.

Most of the floors of these two skyscrapers are taken up by luxurious sky apartments. There are also several recreational and entertainment centers, office spaces, restaurants, etc.

Steel Peak Tower

Also known as the Eurasia Tower of Moscow-City, this supertall skyscraper has a total of 680 912 sqft (207 542 m²) of floor space. Most of this is taken up by offices, and the rest – by residential quarters (around 65 616 sqft or 20 000 m²). The tower also houses a number of the greatest restaurants, studios and shopping centers.

Federation Tower

The Federation Tower is a complex of two skyscrapers, known as Tower East and Tower West. Tower East is the second highest building in Europe (the first is a skyscraper recently erected in the city of St. Petersburg). Its height is a colossal 1 223 feet (373 m) and that makes 95 stories! Tower West, on the other hand, is noticeably shorter at 794 feet (242 m).

The Federation Tower is a multifunctional complex.

Mercury City Tower

The Mercury City Tower skyscraper is widely known as one of the tallest buildings in Europe. Its height is 1 112 feet (339 m) and it has 75 stories. It is multifunctional by concept, holding within its walls shopping centers, offices and all kinds of other spaces. It is also possible to rent apartments here.

OKO Tower Complex

The OKO Tower Complex consists of two towers – the North Tower (49 stories and 803 ft or 245 m in height) and the South Tower (85 stories and 1 155 ft or 352 m in height).

Each of the MIBC’s tower complexes has its own recreational and entertainment areas, restaurants and parking lots. The top floors of most of these buildings contain luxurious fully-furnished apartments. At night, the towers shine with bright lights, while inside them the panoramic windows reveal astounding views of Moscow. This breathtaking view of the capital of Russia is why visiting Moscow-City is a must!

What Not to Miss

There are many interesting landmarks within the Moscow-City compound, but three of them are truly deserving of special attention:

  • The Afimall City Shopping Center;
  • The Bagration Bridge with two galleries and a shopping arcade;
  • The Expocentre Fairgrounds.

Afimall City Shopping Center

The Afimall City Shopping and Entertainment Center is located in Moscow-City’s Central Core. It is divided into 4 zones, each with its own theme – one for every season of the year. The shopping center houses the biggest indoor fountain found worldwide. The height of this watery wonder is 118 feet or 36 meters.

The shopping and entertainment center contains everything one might expect from one of the largest centers of its kind:

  • Retail brand stores;
  • Exhibitions;
  • Game rooms;
  • and Restaurants.

The main recreational space is roofed with a giant transparent dome, which is an impressive sight to behold.

Bagration Bridge

Bagration Bridge with its upper and lower galleries has a shopping center all of its own and was the first structure to be built as part of the Moscow-City business district. Its lower gallery is a shopping arcade and its upper gallery is an open-air viewing platform with a spectacular view of the MIBC and the Moskva River. The hall of the bridge houses the 23 foot tall sculpture called “Tree of Life”. Having gone through the bridge via either one of its two galleries, a pedestrian would find themselves standing right on the Kutuzovsky Prospekt.

Expocentre Fairgrounds

The Expocentre Fairgrounds exhibition venue is located at the very heart of the capital. The first exhibition held at the Expocentre happened all the way back in 1959, much earlier than the MIBC was erected. Today it is the venue of many interesting events.

Exhibitions with very diverse themes are regularly held at this complex. An up-to-date schedule can be found on the official webpage of the Expocentre. The events can be free or fixed-price entry, depending on their type.

Renting and Buying Real Estate in Moscow-City

Moscow-City is not only a work and business hub, but also a residential neighborhood. Any citizen of Russia can rent or buy apartments or elite sky lounges here. The variety of residential real estate available inside the skyscrapers is impressive, including options for any pocket. The following buildings in the MIBC contain residential blocks:

This skyscraper has a mirror glass façade which reflects the passing clouds. Just imagine how beautiful that looks! Anyone can buy an apartment in the Federation Tower. Such properties are not only a good investment, but also a mark of prestige. The average price of residential real estate here is 45 million rubles for an apartment with a total floor area of 334 sqft (102 m²). The average price of a square meter (3.28 square feet) is in the range of 650 to 700 thousand rubles. There are two- and three-room apartments available in the Federation Tower, each with its own loggia. As for rent, the minimum price of one month’s stay in a three-room apartment in this skyscraper is 300 000 rubles per month.

The Mercury City Tower skyscraper welcomes citizens from all parts of Russia. This building is no less tall than the world-famous Dubai skyscrapers. Living in its apartments is a delight. The minimum cost of an apartment in the Mercury City Tower is 75 million rubles. The average price of a square meter (3.28 square feet) is 800 thousand rubles. And for those looking for a lower price point, some of the properties are also available for rent – in this case you will pay a minimum of 250 thousand rubles per month.

The Imperia Tower is a key cluster of interesting offers. The best options for buying and renting apartments within the MIBC can all be found in this skyscraper. The lowest price of a residential apartment here is 40 million rubles. A square meter (3.28 square feet) in a luxurious apartment in the Imperia Tower currently costs 600 thousand rubles, while the price range of the listings available for rent in this skyscraper is from 350 thousand all the way up to 1 million rubles per month.

This complex, standing on a faceted or “crystal” base, is an architectural engineering project boasting spectacular design. Behind its impressive façades is an abundance of penthouses and apartments having floor areas in the range of 262 sqft (80 m²) to 984 sqft (300 m²). The minimum price of an apartment in the OKO Tower Complex is 40 million rubles (the price of a square meter (3.28 square feet) is 500 thousand rubles). You can rent an apartment here starting from 400 thousand rubles per month.

City of Capitals

The City of Capitals is an exemplary architectural complex. Its sum appearance gives the impression of a huge city. Inside its walls are spacious apartments available for purchase and rent. This complex is considered to be especially prestigious. The prices of apartments here start from 50 million rubles, while the minimum cost of renting is 400 thousand rubles per month.

Please note! The price of real estate available for purchase or rent depends on: the tower, the floor, the total floor area, the furnishings and/or interior design, and other factors.

The key advantages of buying/purchasing real estate in Moscow-City are:

  • Favorable location;
  • Convenient transportation links;
  • Well-developed infrastructure;
  • High safety level;
  • Efficient architecture;
  • Panoramic windows.

Buying real estate in Moscow-City is very much a rational decision, most appealing to those who value the ultimate level of comfort. The residential apartments here boast impressive interior design solutions executed in the contemporary style.
