SECTION A – READING (10 MARKS)

CBSE Term 2 Discursive Passage with Subjective Answers

Technology is making advancements at a rapid rate but at the cost of a valued tradition—the crafts industry. The traditional crafts industry is losing a lot of its trained and skilled craftsmen. With that, the art of embellishing brass and copper utensils with fine engravings is also disappearing. The government has identified around 35 crafts as languishing crafts.

The speciality of handcrafted items is their design, an association with long traditions belonging to a specific region. The word ‘handcrafted’ does not imply the involvement of dexterous human fingers or an agile mind with a moving spirit anymore. Lessening drudgery, increasing production and promoting efficiency have taken precedence. The labour-saving devices are taking the place of handcrafted tools and this has jeopardized the skills of these artisans.

Mechanisation has made its way into everything – cutting, polishing, edging, designing etc. Ideally, the use of machinery should be negligible and the handicrafts should be made purely by hand with a distinguishable artistic appeal. However, with the exception of small-scale industries, the export units are mostly operated by machines. The heavily computerised designs contribute to faster production at lower costs.

Although mechanization of crafts poses a challenge to safeguarding traditional crafts, the artisans are lured with incentives in order to impart handicrafts training. Some makers do see machines as a time-saving blessing since they are now able to accomplish difficult and demanding tasks with relative ease. These machines might give a better finesse to these products but they don’t stand out as handcrafted. The quantity has overtaken quality in this industry.

A need to highlight the importance of the handmade aspect is required by both the government and private sectors, in order to amplify awareness and also support the culture of making handicrafts. A few artisans are still trying their best to rejuvenate and revive their culture and heritage but it’s an uphill task competing with the machine-made goods. A multitude of artisans have changed their professions and are encouraging their progeny to follow suit. There are others who have stayed their ground but are clearly inclined towards buying machines.

Nearly two decades ago, there were around 65 lakh artisans in the country. Three years ago, when the government started the process of granting a unique number to the artisans based on the Aadhaar card, 25 lakhs were identified. Loss of traditional crafts is clearly a worrying issue, but it stands to reason that forcing any artisan to follow old ways when concerns of livelihood overrule other considerations, is unfair. Word – Meaning

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY FIVE questions from the six given below. Each question carries 1 mark.

i. What does the writer mean by calling handicrafts a ‘valued tradition’?

ANS: The writer means to say that handicrafts preserve rich traditional art, heritage and culture, traditional skills and talents which are associated with people’s lifestyle and history.

ii. Rewrite the following sentence by replacing the underlined phrase with a word that means the same from lines 5– 15. If it continues, the workcation (work + vacation) trend will be a powerful boost to domestic tourism operators failing to make progress in the economic slump caused due to the pandemic.

ANS: If it continues, the workcation (work + vacation) trend will be a powerful boost to domestic tourism operators languishing in the economic slump caused due to the pandemic.

iii. State any two reasons why artisans are choosing to work via machines rather than handcrafted tools?

ANS: Artisans are choosing to work via machines because machines are time-saving and easy. The products made with machines might give better finesse than handcrafted products. Hint: Saves labour / reduces drudgery / increases production / finesse / efficiency

iv. Why do the artisans need to be ‘lured with incentives’ to impart handicrafts training?

ANS: Most handicraft artisans are poor and struggle to make their ends meet. If artisans impart training to mass/bulk producers, they run the risk of losing their traditional livelihood to them and hence need to be tempted via benefits, to do so.

v. List one likely impact of the support of government and private sectors towards the culture of making handicrafts.

ANS: Government and private sector’s support might leave a positive impact on retaining the number of artisans that is reducing with the passage of time. Consequently, they would not change their professions expecting better livelihoods.

vi. How does the writer justify an artist’s act of abandoning her/his traditional craft for a more lucrative option?

ANS: The author says that it is unfair to force the artisans to follow old ways if they are unable to earn a bare livelihood from those traditional ways of handicrafts. Nobody likes to follow an unprofitable profession.

Miss Universe Harnaz Sandhu Unseen Passage for Term 2

CBSE Term 2 Case Based Unseen Passage Answer Key

Read the following excerpt from a case study titled Impacts of Festivities on Ecology.

Festivals are synonymous with celebration, ceremony and joy. However, festivals bring to fore the flip side of celebrations – pollution – air, water, soil and noise. This led to the need of assessing the awareness level among people about ecological pollution during festivals. So, a study was conducted by scholars of an esteemed university in India. This study was titled Awareness Towards Impact of Festivals on Ecology.

There were two main objectives of the study. The first one was to assess the awareness level among people about ecological protection during festivities. Exploring solutions to bring awareness about celebrating festivals without harming ecology was the second objective. The method used to collect data was a simple questionnaire containing 6 questions, shared with 50 respondents across four selected districts of a state in the southern region of India.

The research began by understanding the socio-economic conditions of the respondents before sharing the questionnaire. Once the responses were received, the data collected were tabulated (Table 1), for analysis.

Table-1: Awareness level among respondents

The study recommended the imposition of strict rules and regulations as opposed to a total ban on all festive activities which have a drastic impact on our environment. The researchers believed that such measures would help in harnessing some ill-effects that add to the growing pollution and suggested further studies be taken up across the country to assess awareness about ecological degradation.

The observations made in the study pointed to the environmental groups and eco-clubs fighting a losing battle due to city traffic issues, disposal of plastics, garbage dumping and all sorts of ecological degradation. The researchers stressed that the need of the hour is increasing awareness among people to reduce environmental pollution which can be facilitated by celebrating all festivals in an eco-friendly manner.

Largely adapted from https://www.researchgate.net/publication/325366454_Awareness_towards_Impact_of_Festivals_on_Ecol ogy_Need_for_Social_Work_Intervention

On the basis of your understanding of the passage, answer ANY FIVE questions from the six given below. 1*5

i Why do the researchers call pollution the ‘flip side’ o f festivals?

ANS: With the celebration of festivals we unintentionally pollute our ecology by throwing leftovers in water, bursting crackers in the air and playing loud music. It is an inseparable yet ignored side of festivals. That’s why pollution is called the flip side of festivals.

ii Comment on the significance of the second objective of the study with reference to lines 7-12.

ANS: The second objective tries to explore solutions by focusing on what needs to be avoided and corrected to solve the problem of pollution during festivals.

iii Justify the researchers’ recommendation for limiting the drastic impact of festival pollution on the environment with reference to lines 16-21.

ANS: The researchers’ recommendation of imposing strict laws and regulations opposed to strict ban is justified because a complete ban may induce people to revolt. Moreover, total banning does not create awareness among people to save the environment.

iv Why do the researchers feel that environmental groups and eco-clubs are fighting a losing battle in the given scenario?

ANS: Environmental groups and Eco clubs are putting in a lot of money and effort to save the environment. But, their work goes wasted when people harm the ecology in the name of festivals. That’s why the researchers feel that these groups are fighting a losing battle.

v Even though a larger number of people say ‘no’ to bursting crackers than those who say ‘yes’, festival pollution persists. How does evidence from table 1 support this statement?

ANS: Although 54% of people accept that bursting crackers is not important, still 82% of them feel pressured to burst crackers to show off their status. Out of total respondents, 68% enjoy bursting crackers for amusement and do not try to limit the use of polluting agents.

vi What purpose does the ‘Can’t Say’ column serve in the questionnaire (table 1)?

ANS: It allows the respondents not to answer any question if they are unsure about it or lacks information about it or if they do not want to reveal their preferences.

SECTION B – WRITING AND GRAMMAR (10 marks)

Term 2 Analytical Paragraph Solution

3 Attempt ANYONE from i and ii.

i. Study the concept chart from the self-help magazine section of a monthly publication. Write a paragraph in not more than 120 words, analysing the listed responses to the situation when one faces setbacks.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image.png

Analytical Paragraph Sample Answer

The concept chart displays two ways to handle setbacks. Setbacks that bring unhappiness with them can be processed in two ways – healthy and unhealthy. Healthy processing helps one learn from failures and to let go of the emotions inside by keeping a positive attitude. The difficulty level of the failed work can be reassessed to find the likelihood of success in future. On the contrary, unhealthy processing directs towards blocked learning or blocked feeling. Unacceptance of failure may create self-doubt and self-criticism, which can trigger more anger or depression. It is evident from the chart that responding to setbacks negatively leads to a vicious cycle of undesirable feelings.

How to write Analytical Paragraph Common Mistakes in Analytical Paragraph

FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED CANDIDATES

Read the following excerpt from an article that appeared in a monthly newsletter circulated among residents of a township.

The by-laws of some residential associations and management that ban owners and tenants from keeping pets in their apartments are justified. Write a paragraph to analyse the given argument. You could think about what alternative explanations might weaken the given conclusion and include rationale/evidence that would strengthen/counter the given argument.

I totally disagree with the statement given above. It is not at all justified to ban or forbid someone from keeping pets. Moreover, living in a democratic country means one can live with the companions of their choice. The animals do not harm others unless people agitate them. Rather, animals are unconditional lovers. In addition to that pets, and animals fill the void in the lives of people living alone. Society members instead of fearing the pets should accept them as new family members. Besides, properly vaccinated domesticated animals are not a threat to the residents’ health.

Answer ANY TWO of the following in about 120 words each. 4*2 i. Parents play a crucial role in the upbringing of their children. Critically examine the parents of Bholi and Ebright, highlighting their impact on their children’s lives.

ANS: Habits and behaviour of a child’s parents make the outline of a kid’s life. Bholi’s parents did not care about her interest and likings. They never supported or motivated her to learn anything new in life. By chance, she got a good teacher in the school where she was sent to save her sisters and parents risk from social disgrace. On the contrary, Abright got full support and motivation from his mother since his early childhood. His mother always kept him engaged with something to learn from. On understanding his love for butterflies she bought him a book about butterflies that proved to be a turning point in his life. She always got toys and gifts of his interest to help him evolve. ANS: Rajvir: Hi, Pranjol! I think we should be visiting Coorg. it is a beautiful place with coffee plantations. I can smell the aroma already.

Pranjol: We visited a tea plantation last year in Assam; I want to visit Goa this year. People visit Goa for its calm and relaxing beaches.

Rajvir: We can sit by the river Kaveri in Coorg, which is so peaceful. Goa has only beaches but good flora and fauna and biodiversity of plants make Coorg a perfect vacation spot.

Pranjol: Do you know that people from out of India also visit Goa. We may get a chance to meet the foreigners there.

Rajvir: You know Coorg is culturally so rich and the people of Coorg are famous worldwide for their bravery. It will be great fun meeting the Bravehearts and listening to the stories of their bravery.

Pranjol: How did you forget that Goa also has a wonderful history of Portuguese and Britishers.

Rajvir: You know well how much I admire Tibetan culture. I read that the place has the largest Tibetan settlement. I am sure the environment will reflect peace and spirituality.

Pranjol: You did commendable research about Coorg. I cannot argue anymore. Let’s prepare the itinerary for Coorg but Goa will be our next destination after coming back. No more explanations now.

iii. Farce is a kind of comedy that includes situations and dialogues that are ridiculous, exaggerated and even absurd. Evaluate the play, The Proposal, as a farce.

ANS: The Proposal is an example of a farce because the main characters, Lomov and Natalya, are both absurdly sensitive and so prone to arguing over minor issues; Oxen meadows and pet dogs. The characteristics of the farce can also be seen through Lomov’s dress and physical appearance which are unrealistic and dramatic. The most absurd situation is when Natalya drives Lomov out of her house and soon after she cries for getting married to him.

Chubukov is a stupid father who is driven by her daughter’s demands. He is so obsessed to get her daughter married to a rich man that he overlooks Lomov’s diseases and illness.

The humour in the play and the childish behaviour of the characters make it ridiculous. Exaggeration can be seen when the characters, on one hand, speak with so much courtesy while on the other hand, they do not think twice before calling bad names and using foul language for each other and their family members. The proposal is a perfect example of a farce.

Term 2 Sample Paper for Class 10 English With Solutions Set A

Section A Reading

1. Read the following passage given below : (1) Overpowering prey is a challenge for creatures that do not have any limbs. Some species like Russell’s viper, inject poison into their prey. Some others opt for an alternative non-chemical method – rat snakes, for instance, catch and push their prey against the ground to immobilize them, while pythons use their muscle power to crush their prey to death. But snakes can’t be neatly divided into poisonous and non-poisonous categories. (2) Even species listed as non-poisonous are not completely free of poison. The common Sand Boa, for instance, produces secretions particularly poisonous and dangerous to birds. So, the species does not prefer to take any chance – it crushes its prey and injects poison as an extra step. (3) Do vipers need poison powerful enough to kill hundreds of rats with just one drop? After all, they eat only one or two at a time. (4) While hunting, animals try their best to kill as efficiently as possible while their prey will put in all the efforts, use any trick to avoid getting caught and becoming a meal, such as developing immunity to the poison. For instance, Californian ground squirrels are resistant to Northern Pacific rattle snake getting caught and poison. (5) Competition with prey is not the only thing driving snakes to evolve more and more deadly poison. Snakes also have to struggle to avoid becoming prey themselves. (6) Some snake killers are prone to have partial immunity to poison. Famously, mongooses are sure; highly resistant to the poison of cobra, and with their speed and agility, they can kill snakes fearlessly and are relatively unharmed . It would mean definite death of cobras as a species if they did not evolve a more deadly poison to stop and resist the mongooses. (7) Poison has another very important role. It has an extreme meat softening property; their specific enzymes break up the insides of the prey. Normally, a reptile depends on the sun’s warm rays to aid it in its digestion.  (8) But I wonder if we can use the venom in our favour. In remote parts of India, local hospitality there often involves serving leather-tough meat. I chew and chew until my jaws start aching. If I spit it out or refuse, our hosts would be offended, I swallow like a python stuffing a deer, down its throat and hope I don’t choke. If only I had poison. Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY FIVE questions from the six given below:

(i) How do Russell vipers attack their prey? Ans.  Russell vipers attack their prey by injecting poison.

(ii) How does Sand Boa kill its prey? Ans.  The Sand Boa secretes poisonous secretions which are dangerous to birds.

(iii) Rat snakes attack their prey by ___________. Ans.  pushing their prey against the ground.

(iv) Why do animals try to kill efficiently? Ans.  Animals try to kill efficiently as their prey will use any trick to avoid becoming a meal

(v) The writer wished he had poison because ____________. Ans.  he wanted to make the meat soft.

(vi) One word for ‘liquid substances released from glands’ in paragraph-2 is ____________. Ans.  Secretion.

2. Read the following excerpt from a case study: (1) Tourists to Jammu and Kashmir have another attraction – a floating post office on the Dal Lake in Srinagar, the first in the country. ‘Floating Post Office, Dal Lake, – claimed to be the only one such post office in the world – is built on an intricately carved maroon houseboat, fastened on the western edge of the Dal Lake. (2) This post office lets you avail of all the regular postal services available in the country while being afloat. The seal used on everything posted from Floating Post Office is unique – along with the date and address. It bears the design of a boatman rowing a Shikara on the Dal Lake. The special feature of this post office is that letters posted from here carry a special design which has the picturesque scenery of Dal Lake and Srinagar city. These pictures reach wherever these letters are posted to and hence promote Kashmir as a tourist destination across the world. (3) This is actually a heritage post office that has existed since British times. It was called Nehru Park Post Office before 2011. But after that the chief postmaster John Samuel renamed it as ‘Floating Post Office’. (4) The post office’s houseboat has two small rooms – one serves as the office and the other a small  museum that traces the philatelic history of the state postal department. It has a shop that sells postage stamps and other products. (5) But for the locals, Floating Post Office is more than an object of fascination. Rupees 1-2 crore is  deposited per month in Floating Post Office by communities living in and around the Dal Lake. The lake has several islets that are home to more than 50,000 people. (6) The greatest difficulty is the recurrence of 2014 like floods in which the houseboat had gone for a toss uncontrollably pushed by the flood. Rescue teams had to anchor it using special mechanism at a nearby highland. Then it was brought back on the Dal after the water receded. Tigers — The Biggest Cats

The key findings from many years of study of tigers’ population have indicated that in many countries, tigers are declining in numbers because of habitat loss and prey depletion rather than being killed directly . Tigers are the biggest cats in the world but their number is gradually decreasing because some of the tiger parts are used by people for various selfish purposes. The given data tells us that the number of Royal Bengal Tiger is as low as 30 to 35 in China. The estimated population of tigers in India ranges between 2500-3800 and is the highest as compared to other countries where this animal is found. Bangladesh comes next where the minimum number of tigers is 300 and goes up to a maximum of 460. Bhutan also shares the maximum number of Royal Bengal Tiger i.e., 460 with Bangladesh but there is a vast difference between the minimum number which is 80 in it. The number of tigers in Nepal is also not very encouraging as the minimum number is 150. Even the maximum number is only 250. To sum up, we can say that the tigers are in danger as the data clearly indicates.

Ans.  As a friend, I would advice Belinda to be nice to custard. She should have made him feel comfortable and safe in the house and also give him equal importance instead of making fun of him. The only condition was that the seeds should be from a house where people had not lost a loved one to death. Kisa was unsuccessful in getting any seeds. The futile search made her realize the truth that humans are mortal. They have to face pain and suffering in their lives. It is a part and parcel of their life and it is of no use grieving over them. She was ignorant of the fact that death is inevitable and must come to all. In other words, she understood that human life is full of trials and tribulations which can be answered by a human being through his own efforts. Man has to face all. Weeping and grieving over the loss won’t fetch peace of mind.

(ii) Bholi was a neglected child. Explain. Ans.  Bholi was quite a neglected child at home and this is evident from the text. No new clothes were made for her and she was always passed on old dresses of her elder sisters. No one cared to bathe her or oil her hair or even wash or mend her clothes. The neglect was probably due to the fact that she was the youngest in a household of seven children. It might be that she failed to draw attention and affection of her parents because of her disadvantageous looks or her physical setbacks. Her parents sent her to school as they thought that there was a little chance of her getting married.

(iii) Custard was discriminated against, bullied and made fun of. Such behaviour often has a disastrous impact on the victims and etches a permanent scar on their minds. Write opinions of Wanda and Mandela on this issue. Wanda: In my personal opinion, ……………………………….(continue) Nelson Mandela: I strongly believe that…………………….(continue) Ans. Wanda: In my personal opinion, a person who is bullied regularly or has been bullied before, suffers huge mental trauma and physical trauma. Some people lose their mental steadiness due to these bullies. They also lose their confidence after getting bullies. They also lose their confidence after getting bullied either temporarily or permanently. Moreover, if the person who is bullying other people succeeds in doing so, then he will get confident and continue bullying people. Such cases should be reported immediately. Nelson Mandela: I strongly believe that the people who are victims of bullying learn to handle these situations independently if they receive proper assistance. Therefore, a person should be taught to retaliate against the bully, and at the same time, they should be taught not to bully on the weaker people to show themselves as powerful. The oppressor should not oppress, and the victim should protest against bullying.

English language & literature | 2021-22, section a - reading.

1. Read the passage given below.

Technology is making advancements at a rapid rate but at the cost of a valued tradition—the crafts industry. The traditional crafts industry is losing a lot of its trained and skilled craftsmen. With that, the art of embellishing brass and copper utensils with fine engravings is also disappearing. The government has identified around 35 crafts as languishing craft.

The speciality of handcrafted items is its design, an association with long traditions belonging to a specific region. The word ‘handcrafted’ does not imply the involvement of dexterous human fingers or an agile mind with a moving spirit anymore. Lessening drudgery, increasing production and promoting efficiency have taken precedence. The labour-saving devices are taking the place of handcrafted tools and this has jeopardized the skills of these artisans

Mechanisation has made its way into everything - cutting, polishing, edging, designing etc. Ideally, the use of machinery should be negligible and the handicrafts should be made purely by hand with a distinguishable artistic appeal. However, with the exception of small-scale industries, the export units are mostly operated by machines. The heavily computerised designs contribute to a faster production at lower costs.

Quantity has overtaken quality in this industry

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY FIVE questions from the nine given below.

What does the writer mean by calling handicrafts a ‘valued tradition’?

The author means to say that the making handicrafts is a tradition which needs to be conserved. It employs trained and skilled craftsmen whose unique style needs to be preserved. We need to put in the effort required to preserve the culture of making handicrafts.

Rewrite the given sentence by replacing the underlined phrase with another one, from lines 5 - 15.

If it continues, the workcation (work + vacation) trend will be a powerful boost to domestic tourism operators failing to make progress in the economic slump caused due to the pandemic

If it continues, the workcation (work + vacation) trend will be a powerful boost to domestic tourism operators languishing in the economic slump caused due to the pandemic

State any two reasons why artisans are choosing to work via machines rather than handcrafted tools

The machines save a lot of time, so they are able to complete difficult and demanding tasks with ease. Secondly, they are able to achieve better finesse in their products.

Why do the artisans need to be ‘lured with incentives’ to impart handicrafts training?

The artisans need to be ‘lured with incentives’ as they wouldn’t want to give up secrets of their traditional craft to mass producers as that might lead to a loss of their own livelihood.

List one likely impact of the support of government and private sectors towards the culture of making handicrafts.

If the government and private sectors were to support them then it would help save the culture of making handicrafts. More artisans would want to pursue their trade, owing to the lucrative nature.

How does the writer justify an artist’s act of abandoning her/his traditional craft for a more lucrative option?

The writer justifies it by saying that the need to earn their livelihood is definitely more important than the need to save craft.

2. Read the passage given below.

Once the responses were received, the data collected was tabulated (Table 1), for analysis.

The researchers stressed that the need of the hour is increasing awareness among people to reduce ecological pollution which can be facilitated by celebrating all festivals in an eco-friendly manner.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY FIVE questions from the six questions given below.

Why do the researchers call pollution the ‘flip side’ of festivals?

The researchers refer to pollution as the ‘flip side’ because festivals give us a time to celebrate and enjoy but we cannot negate the negative side of this celebration, that is the pollution that these festivities create.

Comment on the significance of the second objective of the study with reference to lines 7-12

The second objective is important as we need to know what steps should be taken to celebrate festivals, without causing harm to the environment.

Justify the researchers’ recommendation for limiting the drastic impact of festival pollution on the environment with reference to lines 16-21.

The recommendation of strict rules and regulation over a complete ban is a better option, as it would enable people to celebrate festivals and be joyful, without harming the environment, as it would act as a strong deterrent

Why do the researchers feel that environmental groups and eco-clubs are fighting a losing battle in the given scenario?

The researchers felt that the environmental groups were fighting a lost battle as the other sources of pollution like the one caused by traffic, plastic and garbage cannot be handled if awareness does not increase.

Even though a larger number of people say ‘no’ to bursting crackers than those who say ‘yes’, festival pollution persists. How does evidence from table 1 support this statement?

In the table, we can clearly see that 72% abuse environmental resources and a staggering 82% burst crackers, to reassert their social status. Considering the high percentage, the spread of pollution is definitely higher.

What purpose does the ‘Can’t Say’ column serve in the questionnaire (table 1)?

‘Can’t say’ column gives us an idea of the number of people who lack clarity on the issue or were not aware of the complexities involved.

Study the concept chart from the self-help magazine section of a monthly publication.

Concept chart from the self-help magazine section

Write a paragraph in not more than 120 words, analysing the listed responses to the situation when one faces setbacks

This chart clearly lays down for us the ways to deal with setbacks which we encounter in one life. It tells us about two approaches that can be adopted. One could take up a healthy approach by absorbing the incoming feelings, learning from it, and letting it go. As opposed to the one whereby one remains overwhelmed, indulges in self-criticism or self-doubt, and blocks these feelings which makes recovery slower. This could only lead to listlessness, distracted attention and trigger feelings of apathy, anger or depression. On the contrary if one was to analyse their present situation, assess the magnitude of setback and build grit to do the work, one could save oneself from self-harm and expedite the recovery process. However, if one can’t come to terms with the setback, then the danger of blaming others can only be harmful. So, we can comprehend from the given data that one can overcome their setbacks only by adopting a mindset to heal which would lead to success.

5. Attempt ANY SIX questions in 30-40 words each

What is the significance of the Buddha’s request for a handful of mustard seeds and the addition of a condition to it?

Buddha’s requests to bring a handful of mustard seeds seemed trivial at first since they are easily available and could be procured from any house. The condition that it should be brought from a household where no one had died helps her to realise that death is universal, and one must learn to deal with it and accept it.

Justify how ‘Animals’ by Walt Whitman is a criticism of mankind and its ways.

Walt Whitman has criticised mankind for adopting values and ethics in life which puts them at a pedestal higher than the animals. They are hypocrites, mean, selfish and filled with avarice. Unlike the animals who don’t waste their time in feeling guilty or preaching unnecessary propaganda. On the contrary, they live and enjoy every moment of life. They do not lament about their condition. They neither cry over their sins nor do they discuss their obligation to God.

Comment on the tone of the speaker when she says ‘Will you please look at me when I’m speaking to you, Amanda!’.

The tone of the speaker is filled with anger and exasperation. The reprimand is quite clearly expressed with the exclamations made at the end of the name. The need to gain focus and to make the listener agree to the speaker is quite clearly visible.

A ballad includes the telling of a tale as well as a surprise ending. Using evidence from the poem, explain how these features are included in ‘The Tale of Custard the Dragon’.

‘The Tale of Custard the Dragon’ is a ballad as it has the required element of a story. It has a plot, a setting, a crisis, a climax and even an element of surprise in the end. All the characters are introduced as brave and daring but Custard, the dragon is shown as a coward who wants to live protected in a cage, but in the end it is the dragon who proves his mettle by going up against the pirates and saves them all.

Which two issues about himself convinced Lomov of his decision to get married?

Lomov feels a need to get married as he had reached a critical age of thirty-five and at any age later than that he would not be able to get an appropriate match. Furthermore, he felt that his physical ailments like his issues of palpitation and anxiety make it imperative for him to have a partner to look after him.

Briefly state how Matilda invited ‘a dreadful life of necessity’ into her family.

Matilda invited the tough life onto herself by not living up to her stature but by wanting things beyond them. She, instead of being happy in her means, wants to put up appearance in society of being rich and wealthy which cost her clearly. In addition to this she was reckless to lose the borrowed necklace. She was so engrossed in her joy that she didn’t bother to be excessively careful with a borrowed material. She made it impossible for herself and her family to make both ends meet.

The hack driver successfully trapped the narrator in his web of words. Comment.

The hack driver is able to trap the narrator by tactfully utilising his street smarts. Every time the narrator goes to questions someone, Lutkins goes in first and forewarns them before the lawyer could meet them. Like in Fritz, he tells him that due to his fancy clothes Lutkins will be suspicious and get away from him. So, Bill suggested that he would go first, and the lawyer could keep out of sight behind him. Even in Gustaff’s barber shop Bill went in first and the lawyer lingered at the door. Even when they went to Lutkin’s mother’s house Bill asked the lawyer to let him do the talking as he might be great at literature and law but he hadn’t had real training in swearing.

6. Answer ANY TWO of the following in about 120 words each.

Parents play a crucial role in the upbringing of their children. Critically examine the parents of Bholi and Ebright, highlighting their impact on their children’s lives.

Parents are the first teacher and guide of a child. They can make or break a child. This stark contrast can be clearly seen in the upbring of Bholi and Ebright and the result that followed from there.

Ebright’s mother guided him throughout his early years, when he needed her support the most. Even though he didn’t have a father, but his mother filled up that vacuum with her constant care and love. She bought him whatever was needed to motivate him, be it a telescope, microscope of field trips.

Bholi on the other hand is an example of poor parenting. Her parents neglected her and didn’t even bother to do basic grooming like combing or oiling her hair. They send her to school as they feel she is the most expendable in their house. Their primary reason for sending her to school was only to keep up appearances in society but at no time we see them taking any step for the betterment of Bholi. The final nail in the coffin is their attempt to many her off to Bishamber.

The results of both upbringings show a stark contrast. Ebright turned out to be a world-famous scientist whereas Bholi had to fight for her basic right to decide whom she would marry. Parents can truly change the course of a child’s life with their love and care.

Pranjol : I gave you the opportunity to explore a tea plantation last year, in Assam; I want to visit Goa this time and bask in the sun

Rajiv : I would have agreed with you had it not been for the pandemic, where we have lost our peace and calmness. I think Coorg can bring us closer to the feeling of wellbeing. It can give us the serenity which we require to recoup from this experience.

Pranjol : But think of all the fun at the beach and we’ll also get to enjoy the famous Portuguese breads which have been such an integral part of Goan society.

Rajiv : I agree that could be fun, but it cannot overshadow the cultural heritage of Coorg where one can see colonial bungalows.

CBSE Sample Papers for Class 10 English Term 2 Set 2 with Solution

Time: 2 hours Maximum Marks: 40

General Instructions:

  • The Question Paper contains THREE sections- READING, WRITING & GRAMMAR and LITERATURE.
  • Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each part.

Section A – (10 Marks) Reading

Question 1. Read the following passage carefully: The choices we make on a daily basis—wearing a seat belt, lifting heavy objects correctly or purposely staying out of any dangerous situation—can either ensure our safety or bring about potentially harmful circumstances.

You and I need to make a decision that we are going to get our lives in order. Exercising self-control, self-discipline and establishing boundaries and borders in our lives are some of the most important things we can do. A life without discipline is one that’s filled with carelessness.

We can think it’s kind of exciting to live life on the edge. We like the image of “Yeah! That’s me! Living on the edge! Woo-hoo!” It’s become a popular way to look at life. But if you see, even highways have lines, which provide margins for our safety while we’re driving. If we go over one side, we’ll go into the ditch. If we cross over the line in the middle, we could get killed. And we like those lines because they help to keep us safe. Sometimes we don’t even realize how lines help to keep us safe.

I’m not proud of this, but for the first 20 years of my life at work, I ignored my limits. I felt horrible, physically, most of the time. I used to tell myself “I know I have limits and that I’ve reached them, but I’m going to ignore them and see if or how long I can get by with it.” I ran to doctors, trying to make myself feel better through pills, vitamins, natural stuff and anything I could get my hands on. Some of the doctors would tell me, “It’s just stress.” That just made me mad. I thought stress meant you don’t like what you do or can’t handle life, and I love what I do. But I kept pushing myself, travelling, doing speaking engagements and so on— simply exhausting myself. Finally, I understood I was living an unsustainable life and needed to make some changes in my outlook and lifestyle.

You and I don’t have to be like everyone else or keep up with anyone else. Each of us needs to be exactly the way we are, and we don’t have to apologize for it. We’re not all alike and we need to find a comfort zone in which we can enjoy our lives instead of making ourselves sick with an overload of stress and pressure.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY FIVE questions from the six given below. (1 × 5 = 5) (i) Why has ‘living on the edge’ become popular? Answer: Living on the edge has become popular due to the constant need for something new or different. One thinks that it is exciting to live life on the edge.

(ii) What things are important for a disciplined life? Answer: Exercising self control, self-discipline and establishing boundaries and borders in our lives are important for a safe and disciplined life.

(iii) Explain the phrase ‘potentially harmful circumstances’. Answer: The phrase ‘potentially harmful circumstances’ refers to circumstances that can be possibly dangerous. Such circumstances occur when we avoid little choices such as wearing a seat belt.

(iv) What is the message conveyed in the last paragraph of the passage? Answer: The message conveyed in the last paragraph is that of ‘Be yourself’. Each one of us needs to be exactly the way we are and we don’t have to apologize for it.

(v) Find the word from the passage which means the same as ‘temporary’? Answer: ‘Unsustainable’.

(vi) Find two colloquial words used in the passage. Answer: The two colloquial words used in the passage are ’yeah’ and ‘Woo-hoo’.

Answer: Detailed Answer: The poet Walt Whitman says that he can identify himself better with the animals, for their qualities of serenity and calm composure. So he intends turning towards them, away from his human companions. He feels that animals have better values than humans.

A Chinese legend is that once a few leaves of the twigs burning under the pot fell into the water and gave a delicious flavour. It is said that they were tea leaves. According to the Indian legend, Bodhi dharma cut off his eyelids because he felt sleepy during meditation. Ten tea plants which grew out of the eyelids, when boiled in water and drunk, banished his sleep.

(vi) Why was Madame Loisel shocked at the end of the story? Answer: Madame Loisel, who had borrowed a necklace from Madame Forestier to wear at the minister’s ball, had lost it by the time she was back home. At the end of the story, she was shocked to know from Madame Forestier that her necklace (diamond one) was fake and did not cost over five hundred francs.

Question 7. Answer ANY TWO of the following in about 120 words each. (4 × 2 = 8) (i) “The life of mortals in this world is troubled and brief and combined with pain ………….. ” With this statement of the Buddha, find out the moral value that Kisa Gotami learnt after the death of her child. Answer: When Kisa’s only son had died, she went to Buddha. Being plunged into deep grief, first she went to every neighbour, asking for medicine for her dead son. She had lost all her senses and forgot that no medicine could bring back the dead. Then she went to Buddha for making her son alive. Buddha asked her to bring some mustard seeds from a house where no death had occurred. But she couldn’t find such a house. Buddha made her realise that death is common to all. One must accept the truth and should have farsightedness. Weeping and grieving over the death of near and dear ones cannot bring peace of mind. Blessed is the person who overcomes sorrow. She learnt that a person who remains composed after the death of his kinsmen obtains peace of mind.

(ii) What really hurt the feelings of the narrator in the story, “The Hack Driver”? Answer: The narrator was really fed up of his job. As he hated his work, he thought about running away to his own hometown and become a lawyer right away. He was always under the impression that the country people were honest, simple and helpful. Such impression made him gullible because he was easily befooled by the hack driver who was himself Oliver Lutkins. He took him around the village chasing himself. He not only charged him money for the ‘service’ but also subjected him to immense ridicule of his village folk and his mother. He felt like a fool who was easily coaxed into believing that Lutkins was someone else; whereas Lutkins was with him the whole day.

He felt really shameful of his act and realised that he should have done his homework more carefully about finding out the details of Oliver Lutkins before hand.

(iii) Custard though mocked for his cowardice, displayed courage and was the one who saved the day in the end. Pick a character from any of the units (lessons/poems) in First Flight, who displayed similar characteristics, like Custard and overcame a troubling issue? What similarities and differences do you find between the character and Custard? Answer: Custard, the dragon is portrayed as a timid dragon. He is also a humble dragon, pure in character. He never boasted about his bravery. Courage can be measured at the time of serious situation. And custard proved that he was the most courageous among all by not running away from the danger.

According to me, the similar characteristics, like Custard can be seen in Bholi. She was sent to the village school by chance but it turned out to be transformational for her. The school education and her interaction with her teacher transformed her into a self sufficient girl. Her teacher’s encouragement and affection gave her a new hope and new life. She became a sharp, outspoken and fearless girl who knew how to stand for her rights. Hence, both Custard and Bholi overcame troubling issues courageously.

SECTION A: READING SKILLS (20 marks)

Q1. Read the following text.

1. As a high school student, studying poetry can be a rollercoaster ride. This journey is punctuated by moments of profound appreciation for simpler pieces and intermittent fr frustration with more complex works. Let's be real here -some poems are just plain confusing and no amount of re-reading seems to help decipher the intended meaning. The puzzlement that results from such instances can be both vexing and demotivating. If solving a riddle is what was intended, then playing Sudoku is a better option. One is led to ponder if obscurity was the goal.

2. Conversely, some pieces resonate with the reader's soul. stirring feelings of warmth, happiness, and connection to the world. Often, these compositions centre on themes that are universally understood, such as love, nature, or faith. Being able to actually understand what the poet is trying to say can feel like a little victory and is a welcome relief after grappling with more perplexing poetry.

3. Then there are poems that are emotionally charged; the ones that make the reader curl up in a ball and cry or jump up and down with joy. One is left in awe of the poet's ability to convey emotion through words. Let’s not forget the downright weird poems. These are the ones that defy categorization and leave the reader to their own devices in attempting to interpret meaning. The author's use of figurative language and unconventional imagery can create a sense of bewilderment that is either intriguing or off-putting. Regardless, the reader can appreciate the uniqueness of the work.

4. Despite the wide range of emotions and reactions that come with studying poetry, it can be a rewarding pursuit. Not only does reading poetry allow one to appreciate the artistic beauty of the written word but also enables one to develop crucial critical thinking and analytical skills. The process of unlocking a poem's meaning can feel like cracking a code or solving a puzzle but the sense of accomplishment derived from mastering a challenging piece can be deeply gratifying. Finally, impressing an English teacher with a well-analysed poem can be a source of pride and validation.

5. Overall, studying poetry is like a box of mixed chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. But whether it's complex, emotional, simple, or just downright weird, there's always something to be gained from the experience. So, let's applaud all the poets out there, for making us laugh, cry, scratch our heads, and occasionally feel like a genius.

(i) Which of the following statements best describes the author's attitude towards studying poetry?

(a) Finds poetry to be a frustrating and meaningless endeavour.

(b) Believes that the emotional rollercoaster of studying poetry is not worth the effort.

(c) Recognizes the challenges of studying poetry but also acknowledges the rewards it offers.

(d) Feels that poetry is too obscure and abstract for the average person to appreciate.

Answer- (c) Recognizes the challenges of studying poetry but also acknowledges the rewards it offers

(ii) What is the tone of the writer in the given lines from paragraph (1)? Rationalise your response in about 40 words.

Answer- The tone - critical Rationale - The writer seems to be expressing their scepticism and dissatisfaction with poems that are overly obscure and difficult to understand. The writer suggests that such poems may not be worth the effort and compares them unfavourably to solving a riddle. [Overall, the tone suggests a frustration with poetry that prioritizes obscurity over clarity and meaning.]  OR  The tone - sarcastic The statement "if solving a riddle is what was intended, then playing Sudoku is a better option" suggests that the writer is not impressed with the level of complexity in some poetry. Additionally, the phrase "led to ponder if obscurity was the goal" implies that the writer believes some poets may intentionally make their work difficult to understand, which can be frustrating for readers.[The sarcastic tone in these lines is likely a reflection of the writer's opinion that poetry should not be needlessly complex and should strive to connect with readers.]

(iii) Complete the sentence appropriately. The author's use of vivid imagery in paragraph (3), such as "curl up in a ball and cry" and "jump up and down with joy", greatly affects the reader because ____________.

Answer. it creates a powerful emotional impact and enhances the reader's understanding of the intensity of emotion that can be conveyed through poetry.

(iv) The passage includes some words that are opposites of each other. From the sets (a)-(e) below, identify two sets of antonyms:

(a) intriguing and off-putting

(b) deciphering and interpreting

(c) appreciate and applaud

(d) simple and challenging

(e) emotions and feelings

Answer- (a) intriguing and off-putting (d) simple and challenging

(v) Complete the sentence appropriately. We can say that the author's tone becomes more neutral and objective when discussing weird poems, compared to other types of poetry because __________.

Answer- The author acknowledges that weird poems can be off-putting, but also appreciates their uniqueness and the challenge they present to readers

(vi) Based on the reading of the passage, examine, in about 40 words, how studying poetry can be like exploring a new city.

Answer- Just as exploring a new city requires an open mind and a willingness to embrace the unexpected, studying poetry requires an openness to different styles and approaches, and a willingness to be challenged and surprised by what you find.

(vii) What is the message conveyed by Hina's experience, in the following case? Hina spends hours trying to analyze a poem for her assignment and finally feels a sense of accomplishment and pride, once she understands.

Q4 A. As Vaishali Nathani of 214, Indrayani Apartments, Vaishali Street, Daipur, you believe that forming Ecology clubs and appointing Eco-minders in your city can aid in the preservation and conservation of nature. Write a letter to the MLA of your city area, in about 120 words, suggesting the need to form such clubs. Share their importance and implications. Recommend the involvement of resident volunteers for implementation of eco-club activities that nurture and protect the local ecosystem.

Answer-

124, Indrayani Apartments Vaishali Street, Daipur 21 August 2023 The MLA Janta House Rajajipura, Daipur Subject: Suggestion Regarding the Need to Form Ecology Clubs Madam

This letter is written to express my concern about the environmental degradation in our city and suggest a solution that I believe could help in preserving and conserving nature. I believe that forming Ecology clubs and appointing Eco-minders in our city can aid in this endeavour. Ecology clubs can be run by resident volunteers who may undertake activities such as making bird-houses, planting native trees, water harvesting and creating compost piles to nurture and protect the local ecosystem. By involving the residents in these activities, we can raise awareness about the importance of preserving nature and instil a sense of responsibility towards it.

Some of the implications of forming Ecology clubs are reduction of pollution levels, increase in biodiversity and promotion of sustainable practices. This initiative will enhance the quality of life of the residents by providing them with a green and healthy environment. Madam, you are requested to kindly consider this suggestion to ensure better preservation and conservation of nature.

Yours sincerely Vaishali Nathani  (A concerned resident)

Q4 B. As Armaan Khan, the School Literary Captain of Ujjwal Academy, Old City, Kiladerabad, you believe that languages can help bridge regional divides and promote unity. Write a letter to the Editor of a national daily, in about 120 words, suggesting the introduction of an online regional language learning programme managed and run by student councils and language clubs in the city. The programme aims to help residents who have recently relocated to a new region in picking up the local language organically. Share the importance and credibility of such a programme and suggest a feasible way to execute it along with possible activities.

Ujjwal Academy Old City, Kilandarabad 30 August 2023 The Editor India Samachar Jamnagar, Kilandarabad Subject: Introduction of Online Regional Language Learning Programmes Dear Sir

As someone who believes that languages can help bridge regional divides and promote unity, I am writing to suggest the introduction of an online regional language learning programme in our city to help the recently relocated residents (of all ages) establish a healthy rapport with the local residents and promote mutual understanding. This online programme, organised and run by student councils and language clubs, can help these residents pick up the local language organically. This initiative may be conducted only on weekends for three months, making it feasible for participants to attend without hindering their work or studies. Activities such as language exchange programmes, cultural events, and group discussions on the virtual platform can be undertaken to make this programme more engaging.

I hope that publishing of this letter in the columns of your Daily shall urge the community to support this programme for its potential, to bring people together, promote language proficiency, and foster a sense of brotherhood.

Yours truly Armaan Khan (Captain, Literary Club)

Reading Comprehension Through Unseen Passages

Q. Read the following text.

Shyam lay in his cabin, still trying to piece together the events of the last few hours. He had watched his home planet of Earth be demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass, been saved by his friend Ram, and then whisked away on a ship that was powered by an "infinite improbability drive." It was all too much for him.

Just then, Ram stuck his head around the door.

"Hey, Earthman," he said, "come and have a look at this."

Shyam stumbled after him down a corridor and into the ship's control room. He gazed in amazement at the banks of controls and flashing lights. In the center of the room was a large console covered in buttons and switches, and in the middle of the console was a small, white mouse.

   "What's that?" asked Shyam.

"That's the ship's computer," said Ram.

Shyam stared at the mouse. "That's a computer?" he said.

"Yup," said Ram. "Five-dimensional, biologically-based, super intelligent, and in the form of a white lab mouse. Pretty neat, huh?"

"I don't know," said Shyam. "I don't think I really understand anything anymore. Why is a mouse the

ship's computer?"

"It's a long story," said Ram. "But the short version is that the mice built the Earth as a giant computer to figure out the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Then they ran out of money and had to destroy it to make way for a hyperspace bypass. So now they're using the Heart of Gold to finish the calculation."

Shyam was about to say something, but at that moment the ship's intercom crackled to life.

"Good evening, Heart of Gold," said a smooth, computerized voice. "This is Eddie, your shipboard computer. I'm feeling a bit depressed today. Would you like me to sing you a song?"

"Oh, not again," groaned Ram.

"Eddie, would you mind shutting up?" said Shyam.

Shyam sighed and leaned back against the console, trying to make sense of everything. But as he closed his eyes, he heard a voice inside his head.

"Hello?" it said.

Shyam jumped, startled. "Who's there?" he said.

"It's me," said the voice. "John."

"John?" said Shyam . "Who's John?" "The Paranoid Android," said the voice.

Shyam looked around, but he didn't see anyone. "Where are you?" he said. "I'm down here," said the voice.

Shyam looked down and saw a small, metal figure shuffling across the floor. It was about three feet tall, with a round head and a body that looked like it had been cobbled together from spare parts. Its eyes were a dull red, and its voice was a monotone.

"I've been waiting for someone to talk to me for over two million years," said John.

Answer the following questions, based on the passage above.

  • Routine and boredom
  • Adventure and excitement
  • Loss and change
  • Calm and relaxation
  • It is the captain of the ship
  • It serves as the ship's computer
  • It is a pet of the crew
  • It is used for scientific experiments

(iii) Share evidence from the text, in about 40 words to support the view that the writer’s writing the style is descriptive and humorous.

(iv) Complete the sentence appropriately with a characteristic or its description.

Based on the information given in the excerpt, one can infer that the mice who built the Earth are ________.

  • Easy , isn’t it?
  • Could be worse, no?
  • Impressive, yes?
  • Too difficult for you?
