Free Printables and Unit Studies About Ecosystems

By Jeannette Tuionetoa on November 30, 2020

There are many types of ecosystems for your students to explore. These free ecosystems worksheets can help you learn about the different ecosystems in your homeschool.

Free Printables and Unit Studies About Ecosystems text with image collage of various pictures of different ecosystems outside

What is an ecosystem anyway?

An ecosystem is a community of organisms that interact together and their environment. Living things like humans interact with each other and they interact with other things like soil, air, and water.

Whether it be your backyard or an ocean, ecosystems contain a cycle of life and a community of interacting things. Yes, “things.”

Although we often think about animals when we talk about ecosystems they, in fact, are made up of many living things and non-living things – like air and water.

The major types of ecosystems are grasslands, forests, deserts, tundra, freshwater, and marine. It is good to note that the word “biome” also describes the terrestrial/land-based ecosystems.

In Conclusion

Each of these ecosystems can be broken down into even smaller ecosystems. You literally can create a whole science unit to fill up your year on ecosystems alone.

When the balance of ecosystems is disrupted the living things do not thrive and can even die. Some things like human pollution, deforestation, the development of land, and the removal of excess resources all can damage the ecosystems.

Some disruptions are also done by natural causes like new species in an area or natural disasters. Either way, it is important that we share the importance of ecosystems to our children in hopes they do their part in trying to conserve the systems as well.

An ecosystem if often defined as a relationship between living organisms with the living and nonliving parts of their surounding and the exchanges of materials that take place during this process. The primary source of energy in an ecosystem is the sun while green plants are the main source of conversion of sunlight into food that can be consumed by other organisms. Usually, the nonliving parts of an ecosystem are also very important e.g. the soil stores minerals and water which plants need. The air we breathe is also and important nonliving part of an ecosystem. There are different types of ecosystems e.g. tropical, temperate, aquatic, grassland ecosystems. Ecosystems for Kids - Why Are Ecosystems Important?

Ecosystems consist of all living organisms in a physical environment. They are connected by energy flows and nutrient cycles. Photosynthesis is the process by which sunlight is absorbed by plant tissue and converted into chemical energy. This chemical energy is then absorbed into plant tissues. This cycle repeats itself over and over again. The result is a continuous system of interconnected parts.

The basic idea behind ecosystems is that everything is connected. They are based on the interdependence of organisms and their environment. We are constantly consuming resources and compromising the health of our planet. Some of our destructive practices result in deforestation, loss of pollination in plants, water pollution, soil depletion, overfishing, and tremendous loss of biodiversity. These effects may be invisible, but they are nevertheless harmful to ecosystems.

Therefore, we must preserve these natural ecosystems to ensure that they can continue to meet the needs of our species. If the current generation fails to do so, it will compromise the ability of future generations to benefit from the same resources.

The protracted destruction of ecosystems is unsustainable. Despite the obvious costs of human activities, these ecosystems sustain millions of species. Our species' escapades threaten human health, and if they continue, humanity will not be able to meet their needs in the future. The destruction of these systems will lead to the extinction of many species and an overall decline in biodiversity. Our demands on the earth's resources do not stop there.

In addition to human needs, ecosystems sustain other life forms. Animals are also essential to human survival. In contrast, human needs rob the ecosystem of the energy and resources it needs to sustain itself. Therefore, a balanced ecosystem is essential for humans and for their survival. It supports a wide variety of species. For example, if a farmer kills all the wolves in an area to protect his livestock, the ecosystem is destroyed because in the event of an increase in destructive rodents, the control mechanism is lost. The farmer may not even be able to grow crops in that area subsequently.

Why Are Ecosystems Important?

As the demand for resources and food increases, so do the risks to our ecosystems. These activities have a negative impact on ecosystems. Ultimately, they have no tangible benefit and can only harm the environment. So we need to protect our environment in order to sustain our existence. We need to protect the ecosystems that support us.

While the benefits of protecting ecosystems are easy to see, the downside is that they are not able to provide immediate benefits. However we have to see that these ecosystems are critical to our wellbeing. They support the economy and human needs, but they are unable to sustain themselves without our help. They also ensure that people's livelihoods are sustainable.  Fortunately, saving ecosystems has many benefits. For example, people have discovered that rainforest plants are a valuable resource for people through the timber they provide; they are also a source of many medicines, including quinine and curare, which are widely used today. However, to protect these plants, rainforest ecosystems must be preserved. If we lose our rainforest, we can no longer benefit from these medicines.

In an ecosystem, all living organisms interact with each other. For example, plants need sunlight and soil, while animals need fresh air and clean water. They are also important to the environment because they help keep the temperature and humidity stable. In an ecosystem, these interactions are essential for organisms to live and can be beneficial or detrimental depending on how the interactions go.

Ecosystems are clearly essential for life to exist the way we know it. It is therefore important for humanity to come together to identify strategies to preserve global ecosystems.

What are the 4 types of ecosystems?

Ecosystems are complex systems consisting of living organisms, their physical surroundings, and the interactions between them. They are essential for sustaining life on Earth, as they provide a range of ecosystem services such as food, clean water, and air, as well as cultural and recreational opportunities. Ecosystems can be classified into four major types based on their characteristics and the types of organisms that live within them. These are terrestrial, aquatic, desert, and grassland ecosystems.

Terrestrial Ecosystems:

Terrestrial ecosystems are land-based ecosystems that can be found on every continent on Earth. They are characterized by their soil, vegetation, and climate, which vary widely depending on their location. Terrestrial ecosystems can support a diverse range of plant and animal life, from the Arctic tundra to tropical rainforests. The major types of terrestrial ecosystems are forests, grasslands, tundra, and deserts.

Forests are the most widespread type of terrestrial ecosystem, covering approximately 30% of the Earth's land surface. They are characterized by their dense tree cover and a variety of other plant species. Forests provide important ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, and habitat for many species. Forests can be further classified into several types, including tropical rainforests, temperate deciduous forests, and boreal forests.

Grasslands are characterized by their grassy vegetation and lack of trees. They can be found in areas with moderate rainfall and moderate temperatures, such as the Great Plains of North America and the African savannah. Grasslands are home to a diverse range of grazers, including bison, zebras, and antelopes. They also play a critical role in carbon sequestration and soil stabilization.

Tundra is a type of terrestrial ecosystem characterized by its cold, harsh climate and a lack of trees. Tundra ecosystems can be found in the Arctic and Antarctic regions and on high mountains. The vegetation in tundra ecosystems consists mainly of low-growing shrubs, grasses, and mosses. Tundra ecosystems play an important role in carbon sequestration and are also important breeding grounds for migratory birds.

Deserts are a type of terrestrial ecosystem characterized by their extreme aridity and sparse vegetation. They can be found in regions such as the Sahara, the Mojave Desert, and the Australian Outback. Deserts are home to a variety of specialized plant and animal species adapted to the harsh conditions, including cacti and camels. Deserts are also important for mineral extraction and renewable energy production.

Aquatic Ecosystems:

Aquatic ecosystems are water-based ecosystems that can be found in oceans, lakes, rivers, and wetlands. They are characterized by their water chemistry, temperature, and current patterns, which influence the types of organisms that live within them. Aquatic ecosystems are home to a wide range of aquatic plant and animal species and are important for a range of ecosystem services, including water filtration, nutrient cycling, and carbon sequestration.

The major types of aquatic ecosystems are marine, freshwater, and estuarine ecosystems. Marine ecosystems are the largest ecosystems on Earth and are characterized by their saltwater environment. They can be found in the open ocean, as well as near the coastlines and in intertidal zones. Marine ecosystems are home to a wide range of plant and animal species, including phytoplankton, seaweed, fish, and whales.

Freshwater ecosystems are characterized by their low salt content and include rivers, lakes, and wetlands. They are home to a diverse range of aquatic plant and animal species, including fish, amphibians, and waterfowl. Freshwater ecosystems play a critical role in providing clean water and supporting fisheries.

Estuarine ecosystems are where freshwater and saltwater ecosystems meet and mix, and they are characterized by their high productivity and unique environmental conditions. Estuaries are home to a range of plant and animal species adapted to the fluctuating salinity levels and tidal cycles, including salt marsh grasses, crabs, and clams.

Desert Ecosystems:

Desert ecosystems are characterized by their extreme aridity and sparse vegetation. They can be found in regions such as the Sahara, the Mojave Desert, and the Australian Outback. Deserts are home to a variety of specialized plant and animal species adapted to the harsh conditions, including cacti and camels. Deserts are also important for mineral extraction and renewable energy production.

Desert ecosystems are some of the most extreme environments on Earth, with very little rainfall and extreme temperatures. Because of these harsh conditions, only a limited number of plant and animal species can survive in these areas. In desert ecosystems, plants have developed various adaptations, such as having long roots to reach deep underground water sources, or having waxy leaves to reduce water loss. Animals in desert ecosystems have also developed various adaptations, such as the ability to go for long periods without water, or having large ears to dissipate heat.

Grassland Ecosystems:

Grassland ecosystems are some of the most productive ecosystems on Earth, supporting a wide range of plant and animal species. The grasses in these ecosystems have deep roots that help retain soil moisture and prevent erosion. The grazers that feed on these grasses also help to maintain the grassland ecosystem, by keeping the grasses trimmed and promoting new growth.

In conclusion, ecosystems are complex systems that play a critical role in sustaining life on Earth. They can be classified into four major types based on their characteristics and the types of organisms that live within them. Terrestrial ecosystems include forests, grasslands, tundra, and deserts, while aquatic ecosystems include marine, freshwater, and estuarine ecosystems. Each type of ecosystem has its unique characteristics and provides a range of ecosystem services that are essential for supporting life on Earth. By understanding these ecosystems and their functions, we can work to protect and preserve them for future generations.

Ecosystems and Environments

Ecosystems and Environments describes how people and all living things interact with and rely on their environments. Students will discover the difference between an ecosystem and an environment and will learn how both relate to the world around them. Students will learn that many living organisms can make up a single ecosystem within an environment.

In the “Options for Lesson” section, you will find a number of suggestions to add to, or alter, the lesson. One option is to assign students a specific ecosystem to research on their own. They can gather information and present what they find to the class.

Description

Additional information, what our ecosystems and environments lesson plan includes.

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Ecosystems and Environments teaches students how living things interact in their habitats. Students will learn the difference between the two terms and be able to identify different parts of an ecosystem. By the end, they will see how they, themselves, interact with and rely on their own ecosystem. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the yellow box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. This lesson requires no additional supplies apart from the worksheets.

Options for Lesson

In the “Options for Lesson” section, you will find some additional ideas or suggestions for extra tasks or activities or alternative ways to go about the lesson. One option is to add pairs of organisms to the activity to extend it. Another option is to have students, depending on their level, work independently on the assignments. You could use the practice worksheet as a homework assignment if you wish. Another suggestion for more advanced students is to assign a specific ecosystem to each student and have them research them further and later present to the class. They could use the internet or other resources to gather information.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page provides a little more guidance or direction on the lesson overall. It suggests teaching this lesson in conjunction with others about certain ecosystems, such as lesson on deserts or rainforests. You can use the blank lines on this page to write down ideas or thoughts you have before presenting the lesson to your students.

ECOSYSTEMS AND ENVIRONMENTS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Introduction.

The Ecosystems and Environments lesson plan includes two content pages. The first page defines the two terms and explains the differences between them. Everything a person sees as they look around them is part of their environment. People share their environment with the other people they interact with each day. This could involve talking or playing with someone, helping someone, or eating and sharing a meal. However, these interactions are specific to the ecosystem in which someone lives.

The lesson explains that an ecosystem includes plants and animals. But it’s not the same thing as the environment. A person’s pet, for instance, is just as much a part of the environment as the birds or squirrels in the trees in their backyard. However, sharing the same environment is not the same thing as sharing the same ecosystem. The environment includes an organism’s surroundings. The ecosystem is the place where organisms interact with each other. A person’s dog would be part of their ecosystem and environment. However, if the person doesn’t interact with the birds or squirrels outside, those animals would only be part of the person’s environment.

To further illustrate this point, students will review an example of moss on a fence post. Living in the moss might be insects, spiders, other types of plants, or tiny organisms that are only visible with a microscope. All these living things interact with each other to live, grow, and survive. They share the same ecosystem. If the fence post exists in someone’s backyard, then that person and the organisms on the fence post share the same environment.

More Examples

The environment beneath a rock could contain a completely separate ecosystem of worms, tiny plants, and other living things. In other words, there are many different ecosystems in the world that are part of the same environment. Some are big and some are as small as the area beneath a rock.

A puddle is another good example of an ecosystem for several living things. There can be plants, insects, or other tiny organisms living and surviving in the puddle of water. They depend on the water and its nutrients as well as sunlight to survive. It might even benefit the ecosystem if something disturbs the puddle sometimes. The temperature of the air plays a big role in the survival of the ecosystem.

The lesson then discusses the roles of various organisms within an environment. In the example of the puddle, an insect may be the food source for another organism, like a spider or bird. The plants provide foot for the insects. If the puddle evaporates from heat, the ecosystem dies. Alternatively, if a new organism joins, it can change life in the puddle.

Students will recognize that the members of an ecosystem rely on each other for survival. Every ecosystem has a food chain, a path by which energy from producers can transfer to consumers and later to decomposers. The plants are always producers, providing a food source for insects and other animals. Those animals are the consumers of the plants. Decomposers break down the dead plants and animals, which provides nutrients for plants, keeping the cycle going.

The largest ecosystems or environments include rainforests, deserts, oceans, lakes, mountains, swamps, and so many more. From the smallest to the largest, every environment is affected by pollution, litter, and other manmade disturbances. The lesson closes by explaining that it is important to protect ecosystems by taking care of the environments we live in.

Here is a list of the vocabulary words students will learn in this lesson plan:

  • Environment: the area surrounding someone at any given time, such as a park, school, or house
  • Ecosystem: the place where organisms interact with each other
  • Food chain: a path by which energy transfers from producers to consumers to decomposers
  • Producers: the living organisms that provide food or energy to consumers
  • Consumers: the living organisms that eat producers for food or energy
  • Decomposers: the living organisms that break down dead plants and animals

ECOSYSTEMS AND ENVIRONMENTS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Ecosystems and Environments lesson plan has two worksheets: an activity worksheet and a practice worksheet. These will help students solidify their comprehension of the material. The guide on the classroom procedure page describes when to hand out each worksheet to the class.

COMPARE THE TWO ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

Students will review pairs of organisms for the activity. There are six pairs total for them to compare. At the end, there is a single question for them to answer. Students can work in pairs for the activity if you prefer. In addition, you can add more pairs to compare to provide students with extra practice.

ECOSYSTEMS AND ENVIRONMENTS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

You are welcome to use the practice worksheet as a homework assignment instead. (Review the “Options for Lesson” section on the classroom procedure page for additional suggestions.) There are two sections for this worksheet. The first section requires students to match terms to their correct definitions. There are 10 definitions in this section. The second part requires students to fill in the blanks in a paragraph using words from a word bank.

Worksheet Answer Keys

The last page of the document is an answer key for the practice worksheet. The correct responses are in red to make it easy to compare with students’ responses. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits this page. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep this as reference for yourself when grading assignments
