We relocated the six large-magnitude (5.2 < Mw < 6.2) earthquakes of the destructive, tsunamigenic Aysen seismic swarm, which occurred from 2007 January-October in Patagonian Chile. We used P and SH arrival times from near-source stations of a temporary seismic network fortuitously deployed in the area when the swarm began, and also traveltimes to stations of the permanent global networks, to locate the 2007 January 23, Mw 5.2 earthquake, the first of the six large magnitude events. This earthquake's hypocentre lies at shallow depth (<10 km) on the eastern strand of a major intraarc shear zone, the dextral Liquiñe-Ofqui fault zone. Using the hypocentre of the January 23 earthquake as a fixed location, we relocated the five other large magnitude Aysen earthquakes by joint hypocentral determination. Four of these five events also occurred at shallow depth on the eastern strand Liquiñe-Ofqui fault, whereas the 2007 April 2, earthquake occurred some 45 km to the west on the Aysen fault, a strike-slip duplex fault that segments the area between the eastern and western Liquiñe-Ofqui fault strands. The five earthquakes on the Liquiñe-Ofqui fault were all produced by dextral slip on ˜N-S nodal planes approximately parallel to the mapped trace of the fault. The April 2 earthquake resulted from normal slip on the Aysen fault. Modelling of Coulomb stress changes on the nodal planes of the April 2 earthquake shows that the cumulative slip on the Liquiñe-Ofqui fault strand could have triggered the April 2 earthquake. Similarly, the April 2 earthquake may have triggered the Mw 6.2 April 21 earthquake, which caused mass wasting into Aysen Fjord, generating a destructive tsunami. The system of channels and fjords in the study region is a major shipping route around South America, and therefore careful evaluation of the seismic hazard is warranted.

The power quality problems in power utility distribution systems are not new, but recently their effects have gained public awareness. Advances in semiconductor device technology have fuelled a revolution in electronics and power electronics over the past decade, many factories and heavy loads which are recently installed highly affect power quality due to their nonsinusoidal current. In this paper different harmonics sources such as electric ballast, magnetic ballast, vapor mercury, halogen spot light and halogen with dimmer and their effects and two methods of harmonics elimination are studied. The results obtained show that at incidence of harmonics the currents waveform are not sinusoidal, THD values are out of limits, there is a set of high order harmonics, the current values are higher and power factor is lower. However, the results obtained when the harmonics are eliminated show that THD values are reduced, the currents values are reduced, the power factor is improved and val...

The 13th Venice Architecture Biennale (2012) showed a new way of perceiving architecture as a component of public space – common ground. This kind of approach may be revealed in the mutual relation between three elements: architecture, nature and people. Sustainable design nowadays provides harmonious co-creation and use of space. The consequences of developing this idea are noticeable even today in architectural and urban composition in the cities’ public space. Elements of nature create not only the substance of shaping spaces, but they also present an opportunity to build a local community that aims at taking care of the environment.

Visual media symposium 2024, state of visual evidence symposium.

We invite experts in the field of visual communication to discuss the current challenges and opportunities that synthetic media pose for the contemporary media environment, and how we can utilize visuals as data to answer social scientific questions.

Date: Monday, April 8, 3-6:30 p.m. (central time USA)

Conference Mode: Zoom

Opening Remarks: 3-3:15 p.m.

Melissa Tully, Sang Jung Kim, Alex Scott and Bingbing Zhang

Keynote 1: 3:15-4:15 p.m.

Speaker: Bryce Dietrich

Moderator: Sang Jung Kim

Topic: Video-as-data; Seeing Racial Avoidance on Virtual Streets

Speaker Bio: Dietrich is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Purdue University. He is also a Research Scholar at the Center for C-SPAN Scholarship & Engagement. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Social Science Informatics at the University of Iowa and a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School and Northeastern University.

Dietrich's research uses novel quantitative, automated, and machine learning methods to analyze non-traditional data sources such as audio (or speech) data and video data. He uses these to understand the causes and consequences of non-verbal political behavior, such as vocal inflections and walking trajectories, especially in relation to descriptive representation and implicit gender/racial bias. Underlying this research is a love for high-performance computing and a genuine desire to make "big data" more accessible, while his substantive interests are firmly grounded in American political behavior at both the mass- and elite-level.

Keynote 2: 4:15-5:15 p.m

Speaker: Cindy Shen

Moderator: Bingbing Zhang

Topic: Perception, mechanism, and intervention of visual misinformation

Speaker Bio: Cuihua (Cindy) Shen is a professor of communication at UC Davis and the co-director of the Computational Communication Research lab. Her recent research focuses on computational social science and multimodal (mis)information in AI-mediated environments. She is the past chair of the Computational Methods Division of the International Communication Association, and the founding associate editor of the journal Computational Communication Research , as well as the associate editor of Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication . Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and Facebook. She is a recipient of numerous top paper awards from ICA as well as a Fulbright US Scholar Award.

Keynote 3: 5:15-6:15 p.m.

Q & A with  T. J. Thomson

Moderator: Alex Scott

Topic: Impact of AI generated images & visual misinformation

Speaker Bio:   A majority of Thomson's research centers on the visual aspects of news and journalism and on the concerns and processes relevant to those who make, edit, and present visual news. He has broader interests in digital media, journalism studies, and visual culture and often focuses on under-represented identities, attributes, and environments in his research. Thomson is committed to not only studying visual communication phenomena but also working to increase the visibility, innovation, and quality of how research findings are presented, accessed, and understood.

Thomson has obtained more than $1.32 million in external research funding from a number of organizations, including the Australian Academy of the Humanities, the Australian Research Council, the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, and the International Visual Literacy Association. He has also been awarded research fellowships in China and Germany.

Closing Remarks: 6:15-6:30 p.m.

Sang Jung Kim, Alex Scott and Bingbing Zhang
