Starting a Business Post-COVID: Your Three-Year Plan Formulate a clear business plan accounting for acquiring a good online customer base.

By Paul L. Gunn, Jr • Jan 15, 2021

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

With COVID having disrupted many industries and forcing many to adapt to the changing economic climate, entrepreneurship may be on the minds of those who would not have considered it before or this was the push to get them to move forward with starting a business. Starting a business and executing it to success is a wonderful feeling and accomplishment. Having a plan to benchmark against as you grow can be very helpful in reaching your goals. The better plans are simple in nature and have realistic goals for short- and long-term growth. Prior to COVID, many plans would probably have accounted for normal bumps in the road and not for something as drastic as COVID and the changes that have resulted. Starting a business now with Post-COVID in mind, it would be wise to account for possible shifts in revenue streams and access allowing for the ability to buy online or service remote customers as a building block for your business. Not all business ideas or industries will be able to adjust to full accessibility via ordering online and being serviced without contact as fast as others, but these considerations should be at the forefront of your plan. For example, if you are starting a barber shop or salon and the nature of your business is in-person clientele, what will your plan be to limit density in your location and also reach those clients who are unable to come in due to health or mobility reasons, but still be profitable and convey value for possible higher prices? How do you plan to reach them? Would you consider an option of the entire in-person client base offering a contribution for your remote base to account for the extra cost of having to drive to them? Or would your plan specify a day strictly for remote customers where you do your rounds on that day via providing moblie transportation for those customers?

Support for the small business community in your area can be grown organically if done authentically. If you are starting a consulting business, how will your plan account for accessing and reaching remote customers? There could be a larger number of clients who come out of COVID preferrring to continue with remote buying or servicing. Accounting for the technology to help you service these clients would be beneficial. It's important that you provide this option to reach those potential customers you could gain via remote services, and also for lost customers who you would not normally have had access to if you had regular foot traffic when opening. Scheduling, online buying and technology implemented at the onset may become a key growth factor for those starting out, enabling them to maneuver the waters of Post-Covid entrepreneurship. Customers still need in-person services at a location and servicing them can be a great way to build your customer base - but keep in mind those that will prefer remote or modified servicing options. However, you could be missing out on a very large customer base willing to pay for your service or product option when they know you have a plan in place to effectively service and support their needs. Keeping the option to buy and be serviced online will be beneficial to your firm in the long run if you can plan and execute from the beginning as you grow.

Build a plan with an 18-month goal and a three-year benchmark

In the first 18 months, move to gain awareness to your brand and service offerings or products. Be authentic in your efforts. Respect customer's emails if you acquire them by not sending excessive emails for every product or service you offer - once or twice a month on a regular schedule with good information about your offerings and updates, inform potential customers about how you service remote clients, those with health issues, and your payment process. Many companies are having to adjust and utilize technology, and what is working or will work going forward, to set a trend for actionable items. There is no set-in-stone process but the one that you find works best for your business, customers and ethical manner in which you should be operating. Plan to acquire as many remote or online customers as you would in-person clientele. Buyers are savvy and educated with the wealth of available information. Acquisition for your customer base online should be authentic and show what makes you different. Be truthful and honest in your marketing. Plan on your efforts taking some time to gain traction as most businesses do not grow exponentially overnight. Be driven and determined to stay focused on getting your brand or company to have an online presence. You can connect online almost as well as in-person, and use proper tools to help monitor and track your engagements, as well as have a geniune interest in helping your customers. You can provide information about your industry on open topics and forums online, offer your time free to help someone who could use it seeking nothing in return, as being a business owner should also be about helping those around you in your community with your time or resources. There are many businesses that you could possibly replicate who are adapting to the changes to meet Post-COVID guidelines.

If you plan to start an online business with a less intensive set-up such as an ecommerce site, then be truthful with supply chain shipping time lines. Set expectations for lead times - it's fine if you lose clients to competitors' faster shipping times, for when you do acquire customers, you are gaining those who will be able to support your brand for other reasons than expedited shipping delivery times. Moving to an online option for products and servicing can also lower your costs for maintenance if done correctly. Consider consulting a CPA or legal team if you want additional advice regarding your plan and projected financials. Build a business as we deal with COVID and seek to move to a Post-COVID economy gaining a customer base who buy from you online may also help speed up your revenue and assist with additional funds to make your in-person client experience more memorable as well. Show care for your clients whether online or in-person because that experience has the potential to have positive or negative results. People are still searching for products and services online prior to visiting physical locations, especially to check on how they handle COVID and servicing their customers. For example, if you have a client who has a high-risk family who wants to be able to visit your location, they may search online for how you handle the density at your location and then look further online for how or what options are available to accommodate them - making options available and showing care for multiple situations could bring in a new customer base willing to show loyalty, based on their positive perception of your methods.

By year three

By year three you should be looking to have half of your business sustainable via online or remote if possible. Communication via technology and human interaction should be parallel so that your customers don't feel like only technology is responding to them - being remote may have made it more difficult to have the human element of in-person interaction but there is technology to stay in contact which will go a long way towards customer satisfaction - via personal emails, as opposed to system-generated ones, or personal phone calls to check in on customers. You can foster a grass-roots method to supporting your customers by adding communication tools and metrics to stay engaged as you continue to grow by this stage.

Focus your energies on your first 18 months to drive relationships and customers to you, so that you can avoid the failure many businesses experience in their initial year. Seriously consider your financing and budget, along with access to funding, so that you can match to your plan for customer acquisition. It would be wise to account in your plan for potential issues, such as having only half of your revenue or your in-person clientele went away for six to nine months - how you would continue to stay afloat and grow, and ultimately return to pre-catastrophe levels of revenue.

Acquiring customers online or in-person, the changes to business models are already taking place and it would be prudent to research those competitors in business prior to COVID who sustained their revenue through the shutdowns and are still open and growing despite the setbacks of 2020. Plan as best you can for possible pitfalls, i.e., when starting out determine how you will offer your services or products exclusively online to support a customer base. Be authentic, stay driven and your chances for success may prove better than your competitors.

Hundreds of thousands face redundancy post coronavirus but it an opportunity to start your own business?

Avatar photo

With many facing redundancy as businesses emerge from lockdown and those on furlough lose their jobs, here are five low-cost ideas for starting your own business post Covid-19

As the country emerges out of lockdown, and the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme dries up, many experts are afraid that hundreds of thousands of workers may find themselves made redundant post furlough. The Bank of England expects unemployment to jump from 4 per cent to 9 per cent between April and June 2020, the highest rate since 1994. And that is before the government’s emergency furlough scheme is switched off at the end of October , when even more workers may find themselves unemployed.

Given that so many are braced for redundancy, surely it makes sense to start thinking about your new life now.

And for many, that means pivoting to working for themselves for the first time and starting a new business .

However, the world has changed since it went into lockdown, accelerating many of the trends which were predicted to happen over the next five years: increased working from home, air travel once again becoming a luxury due to environmental concerns, shopping local, streaming overtaking cinema, boosting the green economy, etc.

And many of these trends are not going away.

5 best small business ideas post coronavirus

So, here are five of the best low-cost ideas to start your small business in our post coronavirus world.

Gardening makes you happy!

We know that anything outdoors is healthy in our post coronavirus world. And, during the summer months, what could be better to be outside all day working in nature? And, for those of you who enjoy gardening, reinventing yourself as a gardener is relatively low cost.

Do I need a qualification to become a gardener?

Mark Soanes of Urban Paradise spent 15 years in media working as an operational manager for companies including Virgin and Universal before being made redundant in 2016.

A keen amateur gardener, he decided to become a garden designer and landscape manager, doing a one-and-a-half year degree in garden design at the British Academy of Garden Design .

Soanes recommends taking a course before starting out as a self-employed gardener, such as those offered by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

Soanes said: “A lot of people undervalue gardeners because there’s a lot to learn. It’s a lifetime learning process. You’re constantly learning by taking as many courses as you can, but everybody has to start somewhere.”

You can always join a gardening firm

Another route to becoming a self-employed gardener would be to join a bigger gardening firm by becoming a junior gardener. That way, you don’t have the outlay of setting up on your own and you should be partnered with another, experienced gardener who you can watch and learn from.

How much does it cost to set up as a gardener?

According to Fantastic Gardeners , would-be self-employed gardeners should budget for anything between £7,000 and £10,000 in set-up costs, including buying a van to transport tools, buying proper equipment and professional indemnity insurance.

What are my setting up costs?

  • Tools – lawnmower, strimmer and hedge trimmer are essentials, as well as a spade, fork, shears, secateurs, loppers, lawnmower (best to have a battery-powered one), ladder, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, wheelbarrow, safety glasses, hosepipe, spray applicator, etc. Aim to spend at least £1,500 on gardening equipment.
  • Van – for transporting tools and equipment
  • Licences – you need a licence to operate a chainsaw, use pesticides or carry waste
  • Website build and maintenance
  • Bookkeeping software
  • Professional indemnity insurance – costs as little as £70 a year

Where do I find clients?

By registering with the Gardeners Guild , you can list the services you offer. Full membership is currently just £45 a year (plus £10 initial registration fee). However, you must have at least one regulated horticultural qualification at Level 2 or above before being accepted for membership.

How much will I earn?

Professional gardeners work in blocks of three to four hours – otherwise it’s just not cost-effective factoring in travelling to and from jobs.

Gardeners can charge between £20-£50 an hour or a minimum £150 per day. This equates to anything between £15,000 and £70,000 a year, depending on how sophisticated a service you offer.

And, contrary to popular opinion, gardening and landscaping is a year-round job – there’s always something to be getting on with.

Online teacher

Online teaching and instruction

With millions of parents having to cope with home schooling while trying to work from home, anybody who can teach online is a godsend. And video platforms such as Zoom and Google Hangouts have become ubiquitous in lockdown. It could be that you are already a qualified teacher or that you have a skill, such as music tuition, you can market.

If you’re a personal trainer or gym coach, you can also offer online tuition and then meet clients in the park. Online fitness has boomed during lockdown with cult yoga teacher Adrienne getting 7.57m subscribers for her YouTube videos, while PE teacher Joe Wicks had become a UK household name with his 2.46m YouTube fans.

Of course, you don’t have to set your sights that high.

Newcastle-based vocal coach Julie Miles set up her teaching business Vocal Ovation 10 years ago, having been made redundant as a manager at Sage. A former pop singer herself, she got the idea of reinventing herself as a coach having had a private singing lesson as a birthday present. She did teacher training with top vocal coaches David and Carrie Grant, whose students included the Spice Girls and Take That. Miles’s own students include America’s Got Talent finalist Courtney Hadwin.

Miles has been teaching completely online since the coronavirus pandemic hit, giving between 25 and 30 lessons a week.

Miles said: “It’s different when you’re teaching online. I pace things a little slower than I would do in person. It means teaching on your toes, but in some cases, it can be a lot more effective.

“The thing that makes online teaching more successful is checking that the student has a good setup at home. Having anything smaller to Zoom on than an iPad doesn’t really work.”

How much does it cost to set up as an online teacher?

  • Laptop – £199 to £1,000
  • Broadband connection – £27 to £32 per month for BT Broadband; Virgin Media £29 to £29 per month; Sky Broadband £22 to £25 per month*
  • Zoom Pro subscription – £11.99 per month*

Online teaching depends on your level of experience and professional reputation. Most teachers start at £20 for a half hour and that can go up to £65 depending on your ability.

Virtual assistant

Virtual Assistant

The image of a remote assistant that comes to mind is a virtual Miss Moneypenny, taking your calls, scheduling your appointments and generally organising your life.

However, today’s virtual assistants do much more, including organising social media posts, producing podcasts and building and maintaining websites.

Caroline Wylie set up Glasgow-based Virtual Sorted in 2004 having previously worked for record company Sony Music and ad agency Abbott Mead Vickers.

One of the most attractive things about becoming a VA and working from home is the flexibility, says Wylie, whether you need to look after elderly parents or small children or if you just want to become a digital nomad because you can work from anywhere.

Wylie says: “To a certain extent, being a VA is recession proof. Admin still needs to be done but in a more flexible way. When I look back at the last recession in 2008, we saw a massive boost in interest in people wanting to become VAs but paradoxically we also saw daily rates go up. We usually do quite well in recessions.”

Wylie stresses that the industry is always welcoming to newcomers and VAs are open about sharing knowledge and best practice.

What does a virtual assistant actually do?

  • PA work (emails, scheduling, booking phone calls)
  • Scheduling meetings
  • Running social media accounts
  • Website design and production
  • Direct mail marketing
  • Audio transcription (when an estate agent sends over an audio file of impressions of several viewings, to be written up, for example)
  • Bookkeeping

What qualities/experience do I need to become a VA?

Having at least five years’ experience of being an executive assistant in a corporation or a large company is a prerequisite, says Wylie.

Wylie says: “You need to be quite tenacious and organised, and you also need to be quite strict about your bandwidth and setting boundaries with clients. You don’t want to be getting ‘Can you do this for me?’ calls at eleven o’ clock at night.”

And, as with any freelance role, Wylie says you need to be unafraid of putting yourself forward and hustling for work.

What equipment do I need to become a virtual assistant?

Sector body the Society of Virtual Assistants (SVA) advises anybody entering the profession to have some savings as, to begin with, there is going to be a lag between getting started and being paid.

  • Data backup facility – most VAs subscribe to Microsoft 365, which has cloud backup bundled with it. Microsoft 365 Office Business Standard costs £9.50 per month
  • Data Protection Fee – £40 paid annually to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and compulsory for any small business processing personal data
  • Professional indemnity insurance – between £240 and £360 a year in case you lose a client’s data

Of course it depends if you want to work full-time or part-time. Many women are drawn to becoming a VA because of the flexibility of working from home when it comes to childcare.

A typical VA juggles six clients at any one time.

The average daily rate for a VA is £27 per hour, according to the latest Society of Virtual Assistants survey. And the average salary for a full-time VA is £49,302.

Freelance digital marketer

Digital Marketer

This could be a golden age for freelance digital marketers as businesses cutback on full-time staff and instead outsource their social media management.

Just as you might be thinking about turning your full-time digital marketing background into a freelance digital marketeer role, so other people who have lost their jobs are also thinking about needing their own website – creating an opportunity for you.

Grant Brookes, CEO of digital marketing agency The Web Surgery , believes that the inevitable recession will provide a great opportunity for digital marketers.

Brookes says: “Threat of redundancy has seen a lot of clients pushed into doing something on their own. I see similarities between what happened in 2008 and what’s happening now.

“We’ve seen a massive increase in enquiries for help with digital marketing and website creation since coronavirus because everything has gone online.”

Brookes, who lost his own job as Capital Radio’s head of marketing in 2008 during the last recession, decided to reinvent himself as a freelance digital marketer.

Brookes says: “Your problem is that you need to build up your reputation. When I started out, I couldn’t get into the budgets of the big brands. Companies like Ford or Bentley are tied up for years with ad agencies, who are pitching at a high level. It’s extremely rare to get it front of them – believe me, I’ve been there.”

How can I find clients?

It’s difficult to build a portfolio from a standing start. A better way to gain experience is to freelance for a small digital marketing agency, of which there are many.

Ollie Tobey, founding partner of digital marketing consultancy Slap, recommends getting in front of small digital agencies such as his, as walking straight in through the door of a Unilever or a GlaxoSmithKline is well-nigh impossible – even if you have just been made redundant by a large corporate.

Tobey says: “Businesses are going to be more flexible, which will create fantastic opportunities for freelance digital marketers.”

Tobey predicts that as we emerge from lockdown, clients will not be looking so much for rebranding or soft messaging but hard-nosed ROI on social advertising campaigns. Therefore, being able to list more granular skills on your CV such as creating targeted pay-per-click paid-advertising campaigns, rather than just presenting oneself as a general social media strategist, is important.

In fact, anybody who understands paid-for social ad campaigns is going to be a premium, says Brookes.

“We work with a lot of freelance talent,” says Tobey, “but we rarely look for somebody who’s a total specialist. Being able to list various key products such as Twitter or LinkedIn or working with Adobe Creative Suite is important.”

Another source of freelance work are increasingly freelance aggregator sites such as Upwork or People Per Hour , where you can both list yourself and bid for project. See also: 5 of the hottest new freelance marketplaces .

What does a freelance digital marketer actually do?

  • Organic social media campaign management
  • Paid-for advertising on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram
  • Digital design and production
  • Blogs and content creation
  • Video production and distribution
  • App store optimisation
  • Website development

What equipment do I need to become a freelance digital marketer?

  • Pro paid-for subscriptions to software solutions such as: – Workflow management software such as Asana (£11.59 per month*), Slack (£6.30 per month*) or Trello ($9.99/£7.73*) per month – SEO software such as Moz ($149/£115.27 per month*), SEMrush ($99.95/£87.13 per month*) – Social campaign management software such as Buffer ($15/£11.60 per month*) or Hootsuite (£25 per month*) – CRM software such as Hubspot (£33.60 per month*) – Email marketing software such as Mailchimp ($14.99/£11.60 per month*) – Self-employed accounting software such as Quickbooks (£8 per month*) or Xero (£10 per month*) – Online analytics software such as Google Analytics (free)

How much can I earn as a freelance digital marketeer?

Daily rates for digital marketers can be anything between £160 a day up to £600 if you can code in the backend of a website.

You can expect to earn anything between £28,000 and £75,000 per annum as a digital marketer, dependant on your skill level and specialisation. Coders average anything between £40,000 and £50,000.

However, as a freelancer, hunting for clients can take up anything between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of your time. Hustling for work becomes a hefty part of the job.

Dropshipper

Dropshipping

What is dropshipping?

Dropshipping is a fairly new retail model, ideally suited to someone setting up their own business for the first time. The beauty of it is that you don’t actually have to handle any stock, and that you act as an intermediary for a supplier or manufacturer.

Basically, you set up a website selling products, often from multiple suppliers overseas, and you take the orders. The sales orders are forwarded to your manufacturer or factory and they dispatch from there.

However, you are responsible for your own marketing and customer fulfilment.

Dropshipping has become an increasingly popular way to make money over the past few years, whether it’s for teenagers making extra money or those who have retired.

“Everything can be done online, and you don’t need much to start with in terms of setting up costs. Plus you can work from home or anywhere,” says one dropshipper, who prefers to remain anonymous.

“Customers don’t know that I am not the one who ships the products. Despatch is done by the manufacturer or supplier.”

However, dropshipping does have a queasy reputation as many sites set up shop, take online orders and then do a runner with the cash.

What kind of goods sell well through dropshipping?

Dropshipping is best suited for novelty items, which are manufactured cheaply in China and elsewhere. Some dropshippers do specialise in higher quality specialised items though.

  • Print-on-demand tee-shirts, mugs, posters or hats
  • Novelty items that perform well on Instagram or Pinterest
  • Pet items or TV and movie tie-ins (be mindful of copyright though)
  • Hard-to-find technical spare parts, replacements for older model white goods

“I would advise testing a lot of different items and then concentrate on the ones that get traction,” says one dropshipper. “You can try things and if they don’t work, you can try another type of product.

“Or you could go for a specific niche if you have a lot of personal knowledge about something, such as fishing equipment or skateboarding.”

What are the benefits of dropshipping?

  • Low start-up costs
  • No need to purchase inventory
  • Easy to scale

How do I find a factory or supplier?

Because most manufacturers of dropshipping goods – personalised tee shirts, novelty key rings, specialist parts – are based in China, the easiest way to find a partner is through Ali Express , a Chinese version of eBay.

You register for a business account, have your credit checked and can then contact suppliers directly.

(In a twist, many of the suppliers listed on Ali Express are dropshippers themselves, who in turn source products through Chinese-language wholesale websites. The attractiveness of Ali Express is that you, the UK-based dropshipper, do have some protection with delivery tracking plus Ali Express is English language.)

How long does it take products to arrive?

Before Covid-19, it took on average a fortnight for goods to arrive in the UK from China and between two and three weeks to ship to the United States.

Post pandemic, shipping times have lengthened to about one month for any country.

Best practice is to make clear on your website the length of time it will take for goods to arrive, to avoid damaging customer complaints and bad ratings.

What are the disadvantages of dropshipping?

Razor-thin margins  A good rule of thumb is you’re selling at a 20 per cent margin and the conversion rate for website buyers is 2 per cent Inventory issues  You are caught in-between customers and your suppliers, some of whom are likely to be in China, and whose English can be patchy or non-existent. If something goes awry, all you can do is plead for customer patience and hope your manufacturer gets back to you with an explanation Highly competitive  It’s unlikely that you will be the only dropshipper selling exactly the item you are selling. Other dropshippers can undercut you No control over supply chain  The biggest problem is that you don’t control the despatch process and you depend on suppliers you have never met. There is no contract or obligation to fulfil orders on their part. However, shipping orders through Ali Express are tracked, which does give you some protection You have no brand  Because dropshippers are middlemen, there is no loyalty to your brand. It’s just a question of pricing and fulfilment No quality control  Because you yourself have only seen items for sale online via a website, you have absolutely no idea as to quality. It is only when customers complain that you get an inkling for inferior goods.

How much does it cost to set up as a dropshipper?

  • Registered domain name – £10 a year*
  • Online store through a sales platform such as Shopify – £25pm*

How much do I have to spend on advertising?

Your biggest expense as a dropshipper is spending money on paid-for social media advertising. One dropshipper says he spent between £1,000 and £2,000 a month on social media ads starting out.

Career prospects

Dropshipping is not a long-term career. Over time, you will develop direct relationships with manufacturers who will give you better terms than through an aggregator site. And, eventually, you may want to control production yourself, so that you do have oversight when it comes to customer fulfilment.

How much money can I earn as a dropshipper?

This really is a how-long-is-a-piece-of-string question, but it would not be unreasonable for a one-man-band dropshipper to earn around £40,000 a year dropshipping.

5 Growth Opportunities for Businesses to Thrive in a Post-COVID-19 World

Eleanor Hecks

Eleanor Hecks | April 20, 2021 | Business Growth | 6 min read

COVID-19 may be waning thanks to our vigilant medical and research communities, but the world has changed irrevocably.

Many organizations have undergone a digital transformation faster than ever before, and the pandemic was the major catalyst. Now, more than a year later, everyone is starting to settle in and adjust to the new normal, which prioritizes remote and digital experiences.

Things have changed so much that even if everyone was ready to return to normalcy right this second — and we’re not — the shift to traditional work environments would take some time. What’s more, some workers and workplaces aren’t considering a turnaround. They will continue working as-is, with remote operations and digital tools remaining a priority.

Gartner’s CFO survey reveals that 74 percent of respondents plan to shift employees to remote work permanently after the COVID-19 crisis is over. Big companies are a part of that demographic, too, as brands like Square, Facebook, and others have discussed a plan to keep remote opportunities accessible.

What does all of this mean for small business growth? What kinds of opportunities can businesses expect in the post-COVID-19 world , with these changes in mind?

5 Opportunities to Grow Your Business in a Post-Pandemic World

1. contactless fulfillment.

Because of COVID-19, many in-person and direct services were forced to shift paradigms to allow for safe distancing and contactless interactions. Restaurants, for example, closed in-house seating and dining and switched to curbside pickup or delivery. It was a smart move, especially for minimizing contact and exposure.

It’s an excellent business prospect going forward, even without a pandemic. The market is rife with opportunity, and competition is still not as diverse as traditional channels. It means there is plenty of room for new players to enter the game and for those players to become successful and thrive.

This is a chance to build fluid, contactless fulfillment services that make it easy and convenient for customers to purchase remotely, whether online or via mobile, and then pick up their orders with minimal exposure. Small businesses stand to benefit immensely from this, as it cuts down on a lot of overhead and streamlines customer experiences.

2. Ecommerce Is King

All hail the king! The king of modern business, that is — ecommerce ! Giants like Amazon, Walmart, Overstock, eBay, and Alibaba may dominate the market, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room for growth. In fact, businesses big and small that don’t participate in the ecommerce world may see shrinking profits as time passes.

Thanks to the pandemic, ecommerce has seen a huge boom as people shop online and receive goods on their doorstep without ever seeing another human. It’s safe, it’s convenient, and it’s faster than it’s ever been. From March 23 to March 30, 2021, ecommerce had a 14 percent increase in volume . That’s just one week!

This is a promising opportunity for small and medium-sized businesses to improve their digital and ecommerce game. With many stores and dining rooms still closed, there’s no reason not to.

3. Clean, Minimal Impact

Another concern on most people’s minds these days is our overall impact on the surrounding environment and community. The tipping point has arrived, where going green is necessary for businesses to retain trust and integrity. Nearly 70 percent of consumers believe it is essential for brands to have a sustainable or eco-friendly operation.

Small and medium businesses are in a unique position to take advantage of this, more so than large organizations. It may not be immediately cost-effective, but overall, they can make changes faster and with more impactful results than a large organization can.

Revamping processes that consume a lot of energy, or adopting renewable energy altogether, is one way to improve sustainability. Sourcing more eco-friendly products and components is another. Building green products or facilities or moving locations to one that is more eco-friendly can help too.

Reducing waste and leveraging more recyclables is yet another possibility. These are all things that small and medium businesses can do. And it will all have a positive impact on growth, reputation, and sales.

4. Smarter Services

We saw many different businesses take up new roles during the pandemic to create needed supplies like gloves, respirators, and even hand sanitizer. Breweries alone had such a huge impact by using alcohol reserves to create sanitary salves, soaps, and gels.

Not only was this commendable, but it was also a brilliant use of existing technologies, tools, and supplies. Fortunately, these kinds of ideas can continue post-COVID-19, and they absolutely should.

Waffle House, for instance, began selling its waffle mix online to regain some profits after having to close many of its restaurants. The mixture sold out in just four hours . It also meant they discovered a new sales opportunity, which they can capitalize on, likely years into the future.

It’s this kind of quick thinking that creates not just smart opportunities but more successful ones, too. Every small and medium-sized business should be burning the midnight oil to brainstorm and research these opportunities.

How can your business serve your community through its niche? What out-of-the-box ideas can you come up with for providing your services and goods? Or entirely new ones?

5. Stronger Together

The business world can be extremely cutthroat and competitive, and no one would argue otherwise. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to work together with the opposition to achieve some truly amazing things.

Some of the most competitive leading companies banded together to create ventilators for the UK’s National Health System. Brands like Ford, McLaren, Rolls-Royce, Unilever, Airbus, and many others stepped up. Even as the pandemic winds down, this presents a unique opportunity to have a positive impact on local communities and beyond.

Small businesses, especially, can work together to develop highly creative and promising ideas that serve their customers to increase goodwill and profits . Before all of these major events, a proposal like this might have sounded crazy. But things have changed. We, as a society, are stronger together, not apart, and this has been proven time and time again.

There’s no reason why this wouldn’t present promising and ideal growth opportunities for businesses. Partnerships expose brands to new audiences, resulting in higher-quality or more useful products, and sometimes may even help create new markets or demands for the new goods or services.

An Unprecedented Event, One-of-a-Kind Responses

Never before have we seen anything like this, and it’s a possibility that we never will again. We may see future pandemics, but the way the world reacted and what happened in the business world — a massive digital transformation — is a sign of the times. But it also presents a plethora of new opportunities for businesses big and small.

With the right preparations and the right moves, small businesses can capitalize on this event by optimizing their growth and operations for the better. Contactless fulfillment, smarter products and services, green initiatives, and a greater push towards ecommerce can help.

Moreover, there are some unique opportunities to partner with other businesses, including rivals, to better serve local communities.

  • Salesforce has devised three scenarios for the next 18–36 months that organizations can use to plan their crisis response to COVID-19;
  • An interplay of uncertainties will determine when and how countries and businesses reach a next normal;
  • Understanding and leaning into these uncertainties is one way leaders can prepare for the next normal and rebuild resilience.

Uncertainty is my stock-in-trade. For nearly 50 years and most recently as the head of strategic planning at Salesforce, I’ve looked at how the future might play out, identifying critical areas of uncertainty to help businesses and government leaders navigate risk and make better decisions. In all that time, I’ve never seen uncertainty like that arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Have you read?

How are companies responding to the coronavirus crisis, covid-19: 3 ways businesses can find growth opportunities during the crisis, how to build sustainable business leadership in a post-covid world.

For organizations seeking to stabilize their businesses and communities and rebuild growth and resilience, the unknowns are profound. Safe reopening involves enormous questions spanning public health, the economy and society: how long will our twin health and economic crises last? When can we move from crisis mode back to work? What will the next normal look like and how can we see the signs for change early enough to act quickly when the time is right?

Salesforce is working hard to apply its products and expertise to help all of us navigate these uncertainties. We recently created Work.com, for example, which includes new technology solutions, such as contact tracing, and other resources to help businesses and community leaders around the world reopen safely, re-skill employees and respond efficiently on the heels of COVID-19.

In turbulent times, futurists often reach for a powerful tool: scenario planning . With a team of experts spanning industries and regions at Salesforce and beyond, we’ve come up with three broadly applicable scenarios for the next 18–36 months that organizations can use to plan their crisis response journey.

Mapping the crisis in three phases

As a first step, we looked at the global public health, economic and socio-political dimensions of the crisis. The situation is different for different nations and regions. Nonetheless, when and how any region or country reaches a next normal will generally depend on how the virus and economy behave there and how people respond as a society.

Next, we took those dimensions and mapped their evolution across three distinct phases. For instance, nearly every country first experienced a “losing control” phase, where the virus emerged and took everyone by surprise. Some places, such as Taiwan , responded swiftly, while others, such as North Korea and Tajikistan , took much longer to acknowledge a need for any virus suppression measures.

Nearly every country has now moved into a more structured crisis response mode, aiming to control the virus’s growth through measures like lockdowns, social distancing, border closures and contact tracing. In many places, this second “hammer” phase, to borrow a phrase from Thomas Pueyo’s influential article , has been quite successful — take New Zealand , for instance, along with Vietnam and Hong Kong . In other places, such as Yemen , there may still be a long way to go.

Critical uncertainties defining the next normal

More recently, a third “reopening” phase has started to take shape as countries seek to safely end shutdowns, stabilize economies, and hasten growth. In our model — again following Pueyo — we refer to this phase as “the dance” because it will likely involve us doing the quickstep with the disease, reopening but then potentially shutting down to keep infections under control. Already, we’re seeing wide variations in some of the places looking to reopen. In the UK, for example, along with some US states, infection curves have not yet been hammered down. In others where the virus has been suppressed, the risk remains that it will reappear.

This third phase is what will give shape to the next normal. To understand what that might look like, we worked to identify seven critical uncertainties that have emerged along with the virus. For example:

  • How timely and effective will suppression be?
  • Will healthcare capacity cope with the peak and beyond?
  • How will we go back to work, within and across countries?
  • How quickly and broadly will the economy recover?
  • What are the economic costs of the shutdown and how successfully will they be mitigated?

Three paths to the future

Crucially, it’s the interplay of these uncertainties that will determine when and how a country reaches a next normal. Analysing that interplay, three different paths to the future emerge, each representing a crisis of a different depth and duration.

best business ideas post covid

1. The most optimistic scenario assumes that things go mostly right: people maintain social distancing, the virus does not return later in the year, immunity persists and economic policy is effective. Re-opening begins in mid-summer, allowing a path to the next normal to begin by spring 2021 and a vaccine arrives enabling the economy to return to growth

2. In the second scenario, the virus persists and a second wave resurgence in the winter requires another lockdown, causing a much more severe economic recession. A vaccine is available by mid-2021, signalling reopening and steps toward the next normal.

3. In the most pessimistic scenario, the virus resurges in a giant second wave, as large as what we’ve seen in the worst-hit areas to date. The lengthy lockdown that is required leads to a long and deep recession with profound societal impact. With no vaccine becoming available, no new normal arrives. Instead, a “COVID normal” emerges, with continuing waves of the virus, persistent economic uncertainty and deep societal unrest.

Business and government leaders can use the axes we have developed in our scenario planning materials, layering in details of local dynamics and policies in response to each of our seven critical uncertainties, to help them think through how the next normal may play out in their specific situations.

Designing a better future

Leaning into uncertainty is one way leaders can prepare for the next normal. We have a unique opportunity to learn from this pandemic and intentionally design a better future.

During the crisis we’ve already started reinventing how we work, learn, shop, socialize, operate our health systems and even govern through innovative technologies that allow us to operate remotely. What more can we do remotely, so we don’t have to travel halfway around the world for a one-hour meeting? How can we rethink our supply chains to make them more resilient in the face of disruptions like this pandemic? There are so many interesting questions to explore.

To make those sorts of changes, however, companies will need the enabling foundation of a digital transformation. They will also need increased openness to dealing with ongoing uncertainty and change. Those that undergo that transformation and are willing to think creatively and adapt will be in a stronger position to succeed in the next normal.

Many Australians returned to the office in late 2020. Here’s how they’re working now.

Since late 2020, Australians have been going back into the office with numbers approaching pre-pandemic levels in some regions. A new survey of Australian workers identifies five workplace models being used: as it was, clubhouse, activity-based working, hub and spoke, and fully virtual. The author explores how companies might weigh this decision now that vaccines are increasingly available and restrictions are being relaxed in many countries.

In March of 2020, most companies would have seen their offices as essential to their business. But as the pandemic dragged on, leaders have been surprised to learn that people often work just as productively from home .

Start » strategy, 20 small businesses thriving during coronavirus.

While many companies are hurting during the coronavirus pandemic, some small businesses are seeing lots of new and returning customers.

inside of a wine and liquor store

With the U.S. business landscape radically changing in the past several months due to the coronavirus , the majority of stories people are seeing concern businesses that are closing, losing revenue and laying off workers. However, some small businesses have proven to be uniquely suited to the COVID-19 crisis and have seen an uptick in demand.

With all kinds of businesses creatively learning to adapt to coronavirus , it should come as no surprise that some traditional businesses have seen success in this new landscape as well. Businesses that help people socially distance themselves from others, retailers that enable people to eat and drink at home and health care services are primary examples.

Here's a list of small business types that are seeing strong demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

Cleaning services

With the spread of coronavirus fears around the country, it should come as no surprise that professional cleaning services that sanitize offices, restaurants and homes are in high demand. Cleaning companies, such as Columbus, Ohio-based Corporate Cleaning Inc. , said demand has increased substantially for commercial buildings and medical facilities in light of COVID-19.

"We’ve never experienced anything like this before in our lives and especially not in our business," said Crystal Hughey, co-owner of Corporate Cleaning told Columbus Business First. "A lot of people are counting on us being smart and keeping them safe."’

UniStar Cleaning Service in Manchester, N.H. has had business pick up so much that they’ve hired several additional workers . "Our clients want more frequent deep cleaning," UniStar co-owner Ryan Van Orden told NECN. "We are hiring to make sure we can deal with the demand."

Delivery services

With many consumers afraid to leave their homes or being advised by state governments to shelter in place during the coronavirus crisis, professional delivery services have stepped up to make sure goods can be delivered to homes and businesses. While nationwide food delivery services and corporate retail deliveries have been the largest beneficiary, local delivery services such as GrubSouth in Huntsville, Alabama are also seeing strong demand.

Madeline Sandlin, director of business development for GrubSouth, told WAFF 48 News that the company had recently hired 30 new drivers and added many new restaurants. They also said they are still looking for more drivers to help meet rising demand.

Drive-in movie theaters

One of the most peculiar small business categories that have recently seen success in the coronavirus era is drive-in movie theaters . With standard movie theaters seen as less safe (most are now closed) because they encourage hundreds of people to gather in small spaces, drive-in theaters allow people to take in a show from their own car and provide a way for families to get out of the house.

Owners of drive-in theaters in California, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri all told the Los Angeles Times recently that business had increased in light of coronavirus. While it’s not clear if these drive-in theaters will remain open as many “non-essential businesses” are closed, the coronavirus crisis may reinvigorate these types of businesses in a new period where keeping your distance is encouraged.

Grocery stores

With the general public practicing “social distancing” and many U.S. states closing restaurant dining rooms, more families are stocking up on goods and eating at home. This has led to large and small grocers alike to see surges in customer demand.

Greg Ferrara, president of the National Grocers Association — which represents more than 8,500 U.S. stores — told ABC News recently that smaller grocers have played a unique role in these trying times. He noted that “independent grocers are helping larger chains meet demand during this time and that grocery stores are being restocked at unprecedented speeds.”

The CEO of Stew Leonard's , a grocery chain with seven supermarkets in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, told Fox News recently that its goods had been flying off the shelves . Some of the store’s top sellers have been toilet paper, hand sanitizer, pizza and chicken.

Liquor and wine stores

With many bars closed around the United States due to COVID-19, local liquor and wine stores have dramatically increased sales. JD Phelps, store manager at New York City’s Vintage Grape Wines & Spirits , told Bloomberg that it’s been difficult to keep up with demand in the past few weeks with people wanting to stock up at home.

Additionally, Mike Thompson, owner of B&B Liquor in Macomb, Michigan, told MLive.com that customers are “buying in mass hysteria,” with people buying liquor to make hand sanitizer or buying because they are afraid they’ll “get locked in.”

Meal prep delivery services

Many of the top brands for meal preparation and delivery are skyrocketing due to people spending more time at home and less at restaurants. Taking advantage of this trend, several small businesses that offer meal prep and delivery are also seeing increased demand.

Eat Clean Bro , a Freehold, New Jersey-based meal prep and delivery service, has seen a surge in orders from new and returning customers. “This time of year, we’re very busy so we’re prepared to handle an influx of orders,” Jamie Giovinazzo, owner and founder told NJ.com. “Our orders are up 40%. We’re just guns blazing with orders.”

Canned and jarred goods companies

With many people wanting to stock up on canned and jarred food, small businesses that manufacture these goods are seeing more business. Charlotte, North Carolina’s Cannizzaro Sauces, for example, has seen a lot of new sales for its fresh tomato sauce.

Randy and Melanie Tritten, owners of Cannizzaro Sauces, told the Associated Press that they realized they had a large opportunity when shelves of pasta sauces were completely cleared out at their local grocery stores.

Game makers and sellers

With the novel coronavirus forcing many people to stay at home instead of going out, small businesses that create board games and puzzles are popular since they help entertain families. Craig Marney, store manager at Good Games Chicago, told the Chicago Sun-Times that board games and puzzles were selling well , especially the timely cooperative board game Pandemic. Additionally, small video game makers that work on creative titles for children are seeing an uptick in demand with many kids unable to attend school.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to socially distance and avoid public transit, it has also sharply increased demand for used cars that offer safe spaces away from strangers.

Fitness equipment companies

With many gyms closed across the U.S., Americans have turned to home gyms in order to help them stay fit during the coronavirus crisis. While yoga mat purchases are likely the number one purchase for many working out at home, other fitness products are seeing success.

Small-but-growing tech startups that offer internet-connected fitness equipment are thriving, such as Ergatta, FightCamp, Mirror and Tonal . These services allow users to receive live or recorded instruction from experts that are then paired with proprietary equipment designed to fit into your home gym or spare room.

Landscaping and yard care companies

As more people than ever are stuck at home due to coronavirus fears, homeowners have much more time to tend to their lawns and gardens. As such, landscaping and general yard care companies are seeing unseasonably good business.

Allwood Recyclers, a small landscaping and materials company in Fairview, Oregon, told KATU that since people have been ordered or encouraged to stay at home, demand has been constant. “It’s kind of all hands on deck right now,” Tyler Wright, yard manager at Allwood Recyclers, said. “Normally, our truck doesn’t start delivering like this until May, but it started this week and we are going from 7:30 to 4 p.m. daily. We probably have about 12 to 15 deliveries a day.”

Bread-baking companies

The coronavirus pandemic has pushed more people to spend time at home cooking and baking, making all sorts of new recipes. One part of this new trend is specifically baking bread , which is helping Americans alleviate stress and tap into their creativity . In turn, companies that enable the baking of bread have seen their demand sharply increase, including makers of flour and yeast.

“We are aware that Red Star Yeast is difficult to find through online sources and in stores everywhere,” Milwaukee-based Red Star Yeast said on its website . “The current demand is simply unprecedented. Rest assured, we are filling orders and shipping product every day to stores."

Coffee subscription companies

With many consumers unable to buy coffee in person because shops are closed or they are hesitant to leave their homes, coffee companies that offer home delivery are seeing increased demand. These providers include those who ship freshly roasted beans, pre-packaged cold brew and other variations.

In particular, coffee subscription companies that deliver new beans weekly or monthly are getting a lot more attention from consumers. Companies including Mistobox , Trade Coffee and Yes Plz Coffee are beneficiaries in the social distancing world. Additionally, some coffee shops that have been closed storefronts have been able to generate new revenue streams by delivering beans, including many shops in coffee-dependent New York City .

Gardening suppliers

With so many people at home and the weather beginning to get warmer around the U.S., home gardening has gained new popularity . People are growing their own fruits, vegetables and plants because it can be a little scary to go to the grocery store, supply is constrained at stores, and there’s simply more time to try your hand at being a green thumb. Naturally, gardening companies including seed providers are booming.

The Hudson Valley Seed Co. , based in New York, has seen web-based demand increase five-fold in the past month. “The greatest spike in interest has come from people taking food security into their own hands, mostly first-time customers that are gardening,” Jack Whettam, Hudson Valley Seed Co. sales manager, told The Morning Call. “Usually, we see vegetable and flower sales split fairly evenly, though at this time we’ve seen a much greater interest in vegetable seeds, especially high-calorie types like potatoes, corn, beans, and squash."

Mask makers

While mask-making wasn’t exactly in high demand at the beginning of 2020, just a few months later it has become a popular choice for new entrepreneurs. Americans all over the country want to obtain high-quality (and in some cases creative) masks to protect themselves and those around them.

For example, Seattle-based reusable gift-wrap company Tokki has pivoted its company and redirected all of its cloth inventory to masks. Tokki has seen incredibly high demand since moving to mask-making. Additionally, 20,000 shops on the e-commerce marketplace Etsy are now selling masks, showing how fast this market is heating up.

Telehealth services

In the era of COVID-19, many people don’t want to leave their homes unless it is absolutely necessary, and they especially don’t want to go to medical offices where they could be exposed to the novel coronavirus. Thus, telehealth companies that allow patients to see doctors or therapists via their computers or phones have become more popular, increasing an estimated 50% nationwide .

Boston-based telemedicine technology company Amwell , for example, said it has recently seen more than five times the volume it experiences during peak flu season. “In the past seven days we were 624% higher than our expected volume for this week,” Mike Baird, President of Customers Solutions at Amwell, told the Orlando Sentinel. “We have seen multiple large health systems come to us and say, "I want to enroll 2,000 or 1,000 providers [quickly].”

Tutoring businesses

With many schools around the U.S. shifting from in-person learning to online for some or all instruction, some parents are concerned their children will fall behind during the transition . One way parents are working to keep their kids’ education on track is the hiring of private tutors . These businesses, sometimes with multiple tutors or sometimes sole proprietors, are seeing more demand.

Bakersfield, Calif.-based Kern Tutoring is one such business, and it is hiring new tutors to meet demand. "[Parents] understand their child will be doing distance learning and there are barriers for teachers teaching virtually so they want to supplement they want to make sure their child is getting the individual attention that some students need," Gustavo Luna, owner of Kern Tutoring, told 23ABC News . “We are continuing to provide in-person tutoring for those that want to come in. We are strict on regulations and requirements and we are following the recommendations of the public health department and adding to that. We will service one or two students here at a time. But most of our services will be provided via Zoom.”

Used car sellers

As the COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to socially distance and avoid public transit, it has also sharply increased demand for used cars that offer safe spaces away from strangers. Other factors driving up used car interest include low inventory of new cars, low interest rates and people wanting to spend less cash on cars due to economic uncertainty.

As such, used car sellers like Minnesota-based Walser Automotive Group have seen a surge in interest. “Used cars are in top demand right now,” Walser Chief Merchandising Officer Colton Ray told KARE11 . “We facilitate the ability to start the transaction online and actually even finish it. We do not require our customers to come to our dealerships to sign out or finish the paperwork on their purchase and we will actually bring the vehicle to them.”

Behavioral health providers

With COVID-19 causing many types of life disruptions such as job losses and social isolation, cases of anxiety and depression across the U.S. have risen as well. To help address this, behavioral and mental health providers have stepped up to provide more services, especially those that are online.

Virtual therapy apps such as Talkspace are seeing more demand and even post-pandemic , these types of services will likely remain popular because of their accessibility and flexibility. In fact, digital behavioral health startups have also spiked in interest among investors , attracting $588 million in funding in the first half of 2020, whereas the same segment of startups reached $539 million in all of 2019.

Furniture sellers

With more people spending time at home seemingly than ever due to COVD-19, furniture sales have increased to help people make living rooms, patios, and home offices more comfortable. Laura Sproul, owner of Sproul’s Furniture in Newcastle, Maine, reopened her store for in-person business at the end of May and told the Lincoln County News that sales have increased substantially. “They spent enough time in their house and decided they should buy something new,” Sproul said. “If they’re going to be home, they might as well have their home look good.”

Home health companies

Demand for home health providers was already increasing before COVID-19, but the pandemic has pushed more people to take advantage of it as they avoid non-emergency hospital and doctor visits. Home health is also being seen as an alternative to long-term care homes that have been hit hard by the pandemic. Indianapolis-based home health care company Senior Helpers told CBS4 Indy recently that it has 100 people working in homes and is looking to hire 50 more to meet new demands.

The Speaker has been facing pressure this week after Wednesday's chaos in the Commons over the Gaza ceasefire votes.

A total of 71 MPs have now signed a motion of no-confidence in Sir Lindsay Hoyle.

However, it should be noted that the motion has been losing momentum since yesterday afternoon and the initial danger to the Speaker's position appears to have subsided.

It's also important to note this early day motion won't necessarily force Sir Lindsay out.

He is not bound to resign if a certain number of MPs back it - and there is unlikely to be a debate on it.

Rather, the EDM is being used as a mechanism by his critics to show the strength of feeling in parliament after what happened with the Gaza ceasefire votes.

Sir Lindsay sparked outrage among SNP and Tory MPs when he selected a Labour amendment to the SNP's motion.

Convention dictates that only the government can amend an opposition motion, but Sir Lindsay opted to choose Labour's amendment as well as the government's.

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about different political parties.

Labour is still sitting comfortably on a roughly 19-point lead, averaging at 44% in the polls, and the Tories on 25.2%.

In third are the Lib Dems on 9.7%, followed by Reform on 9.2%.

The Green Party stands at 6.3%, and the SNP on 3.2%.

Downing Street has condemned protesters for projecting "from the river to the sea" onto Big Ben during a pro-Palestinian rally on Wednesday night.

The demonstration took place in Parliament Square as MPs debated calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, which led to chaotic scenes in the Commons.

The prime minister's official spokesperson said it was "wrong" for the controversial phrase to be used, though stopped short of saying police should have acted over it, adding: "It is rightly a decision for the independent police to make operational decisions on the ground."

Other words were also projected onto the Elizabeth Tower, including "stop bombing Gaza," "ceasefire now", and "stop war now".

But the use of "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" has drawn anger from some pro-Israel supporters, who argue the phrase calls for the eradication of the Israeli state.

Some pro-Palestinian supporters reject this, saying it is simply expressing the need for equality for all inhabitants of historic Palestine.

Conservative MP David Davis has accused the government of continuing to "shirk its obligations" after Shamima Begum lost an appeal today against the removal of her British citizenship.

"Shamima Begum is British, and should be repatriated along with all our other nationals detained without charge or trial in North East Syria, to face British justice, where appropriate," Mr Davis said.

"Our international allies recognised this as the only sensible solution long ago - the government must finally take responsibility and abandon its failed policy."

The east London schoolgirl travelled to Syria in 2015 at the age of 15.

Her citizenship was revoked on national security grounds shortly after she was found in a refugee camp in 2019.

She has now lost an appeal against that decision (see post at 11.17am).

The ruling has been welcomed by both Downing Street and the Home Office.

While declining to comment on the details of individual cases, a No 10 spokeswoman said: "We're pleased the court has found in favour of the government.

"Beyond that, I would just say that our priority remains on maintaining the safety and security of the UK.

"We'll always take the strongest possible action to protect our national security and we never take decisions around deprivation (of citizenship) lightly."

The comments were echoed by a Home Office spokesperson, who said: "Our priority remains maintaining the safety and security of the UK, and we will robustly defend any decision made in doing so" (see post at 11.30am).

However, Mr Davis warned: "Despite today’s judgement, the government cannot continue to shirk its obligations on this issue".

Ms Begum's lawyers have vowed to "keep fighting", although the specifics of what comes next are not clear (see post at 14.35).

The King has formally stripped Paula Vennells, the former chief executive of the Post Office, of her CBE.

Ms Vennells received the honour in 2019 but was widely criticised amid the fallout from the Post Office scandal.

She had previously said she would give up the honour.

Ms Vennells was portrayed by an actor in the ITV drama, Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, which brought the scandal to the wider attention of the public earlier this year.

More than 700 sub-postmasters and mistresses had their reputations ruined by allegations of theft and false accounting, with many left bankrupt or in prison, as a result of a computer system called Horizon.

The scandal is considered the widest miscarriage of justice in British history.

Shamima Begum's lawyer Daniel Furner has vowed to "keep fighting" after the 24-year-old lost the latest round of her five-year legal battle following the removal of her British citizenship in 2019. But the specifics are less clear.

In the unanimous decision to dismiss her attempt to overturn the decision of the lower court - the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) - three Court of Appeal judges rejected all of her five arguments.

Her lawyers are considering the full 42-page judgment, which they saw for the first time on Friday, and any arguments over its consequences - which could include a bid to appeal against the decision at the Supreme Court - have been adjourned for seven days.

Speaking after the ruling, one of Ms Begum's lawyers said it was too soon to say whether they would lodge an appeal at the UK's highest court but appealed directly to the government to follow in the footsteps of other countries which have repatriated their citizens.

"Every other country has taken their nationals back - France, Germany, Belgium, America, Canada, Australia," said Gareth Peirce.

"Every country in a comparable position has seen that there is no alternative but to take their nationals back. The UK stands now virtually alone."

But Downing Street welcomed the Court of Appeal's decision and it is impossible to see the government allowing Ms Begum - who remains in a refugee camp in northern Syria following her travel to the country aged 15 - to return to the UK without being forced by the courts.

Labour MP Jess Phillips has revealed former home secretary Dame Priti Patel checked in on her every week after the murder of Conservative MP Sir David Amess.

Ms Phillips talks about the aftermath of Sir David's murder in a teaser episode of the new Sky News podcast Electoral Dysfunction .

Starting next week, it will bring together Jess, Conservative peer Ruth Davidson and Sky's political editor Beth Rigby  every Friday for a new episode.

Jess said: "Those of us who are the highest security risk, of which I am one of 10, they really ramped up our security on these occasions, as they always do in these moments.

"And Priti Patel [who at the time was home secretary] was really good friends with David Amess.

"I mean she was his [constituency] neighbour. And every Sunday night for four weeks, at about 9pm at night, she would ring me and ask if I was all right.

"You don't forget that sort of thing."

Sir David was killed during a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex in 2021.

The issue of MPs' safety sits firmly in the spotlight after pro-Palestinian protesters held a demonstration outside the home of Bournemouth East MP Tobias Ellwood last week.

It has also been central to the fallout over chaos in the Commons on Wednesday, which resulted in dozens of MPs signing a motion of no confidence in the Speaker (see post at 13.49).
