Pocket-lint

What is sky mobile, how much does it cost and what is roll over data.

Like BT and Virgin Media, Sky offers its own mobile network service alongside TV, landline and broadband.

However, Sky Mobile gives you a few features you might not find anywhere else. That's why we've decided to give you a low down on the network, what it costs and what you get for your money.

What is Sky Mobile?

In addition to its TV, broadband and landline services, Sky offers a 4G mobile network service. Sky Mobile is for existing Sky TV subscribers and new, non-Sky customers. There are benefits to having Sky TV too, but it is not necessary.

It offers simple to understand SIM-only 12-month contracts and handset deals on 24 and 30-month contracts.

Many handsets are available, from Apple, Samsung, Sony and LG, and you can swap your phone every one or two years depending on the contract.

The whole tenet of Sky Mobile is that it keeps things simple, so you don't get confused as to what you get for your plan. It also offers roll over data for each and every customer, as explained below.

How much does Sky Mobile cost?

Sky mobile has a simple structure. There are four data plans and two options for calls and texts. You pick one of the plans, then choose how you want to pay for your calls and texts.

  • 500MB of data: £5 per month
  • 1GB of data: £10 per month
  • 3GB of data: £15 per month
  • 5GB of data: £20 per month

You can also buy a 1GB data add-on for £10 if you plan to use extra data in a particular month.

Calls and texts

  • Pay as you use: 10p a minute of talk time, 10p a text
  • Unlimited calls and texts: £10 per month for non-Sky TV customers, free for Sky TV subscribers

For example, if you want 1GB of data a month and unlimited calls and texts, it'll cost you £20 per month if you don't also subscribe to Sky TV.

A Sky TV household can have up to five SIMs so a whole family can make use of free unlimited calls and texts on individual phones.

Roaming across 36 countries in Europe is free. You can use your normal data, minutes and texts in any of the following countries:

  • Azores (Portugal)
  • Canary Islands
  • Cyprus (Northern)
  • Czech Republic
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Liechtenstein
  • Madeira (Portugal)
  • Netherlands

Roaming charges vary in countries outside of the EU. Sky Mobile charges include 12p per MB of data in US, Australia and Canada.

In addition to the network price plan, you can also get a handset from Apple, Samsung, LG or Sony for an extra monthly fee, on a 24 or 30-month contract. Here are a few options:

  • Apple iPhone SE from £15 per month
  • Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017 model) from £15 per month
  • Apple iPhone 7 from £23 per month
  • LG G6 from £26 per month
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 from £26 per month
  • Sony Xperia XZ Premium from £26 per month

For example, if you take out a 30-month contract with 1GB of data and a 32GB iPhone 7, you will pay £33 a month as a Sky TV customer, £43 per month without Sky TV.

But even though it is a 30-month deal, you can still swap your handset for a later model after two years. We explain more below.

A handset contract from Sky Mobile is separate to your 12-month price plan.

What network does Sky Mobile use?

As an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) Sky leases mobile spectrum from O2, so anywhere there is an O2 4G signal you will be able to use 4G data on your Sky Mobile service too.

You can check 3G and 4G coverage for your area in the UK here: www.o2.co.uk/coveragechecker

What's different about Sky Mobile?

With so many other network providers, you might wonder why you should consider Sky Mobile over a rival, especially if the prices are similar? Sky has included a few interesting additional incentives to make its service a little different.

Sky Mobile offers two mobile device schemes. With Swap 12 you can swap your smartphone for any other device after a year, even though the handset contract runs for 24-months. Just send the old one back and your new chosen handset will be sent to your door at no extra charge. You will have to pay the extra monthly cost if the phone is more expensive, however.

Swap 24 is similar but over a two year period, even though the contract is over 30-months. The monthly cost you pay is lower with this option.

The SIM contract is separate and runs for 12-months.

  • Sky Mobile Swap: How to change your phone every year with Sky's new plans

Unlike most, if not all, other providers Sky Mobile allows you to roll over your data allowance to use at a later date. What's more, you have up to three years to use it.

At the end of every month, any leftover data is stored in a virtual piggy bank and you can cash in each 1GB you have acquired, which is then added to that month's allowance. All rolled over data is also cumulative, so you can pile it up for when you need it most.

Although Sky Mobile SIM contracts are locked to 12-months, you have the option each month to change your plan. You can opt to either go up or down in data allowance and pay for that band from then on. Or you can switch from unlimited calls and texts to pay as you use and vice versa.

You can also pay separately for a 1GB data add-on if you need extra data in a particular month. That costs an additional £10.

Sky+ customers with Sky Mobile can create playlists of their favourite content and stream or download them to their phones, over Wi-Fi or 4G. It also gives every Sky Mobile customer free Sky Go Extra (which usually costs £5 per month), and they can each use Sync on up to four devices.

The feature will also be coming for Sky Q customers later in 2017.

Sky Mobile 5G phones, cities and prices − all you need to know

Sky Mobile 5G: Sky Mobile has launched its 5G network in the UK − here’s all you need to know about network coverage and contracts, plus the new handsets.

Sky Mobile has stepped up to the plate surprisingly quickly, beating Three to the punch. But can it catch up with EE, Vodafone and O2 in time to become a force to be reckoned with? Here’s where Sky currently stands with regard to network coverage, contracts, and those all-new 5G smartphones.

Sky Mobile 5G cities

Here’s the full list of UK towns and cities with Sky Mobile 5G coverage:

The network aims to cover a total of 50 cities and towns across the country by summer 2020, including the 20 listed above.

Picture of a map showing London 5G coverage sky

Sky Mobile: 5G coverage, central London

Sky Mobile’s website does include a coverage tracker tool  to get a more detailed breakdown of local signal strength. The above image shows current coverage in central London, which evidently isn’t yet uniformly available across the city.

Sky Mobile 5G phones

At launch, Sky Mobile offers four 5G-enabled handsets:

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy A90 5G
  • Huawei Mate 20 X 5G

It’s a slim selection so far, but we expect far more 5G smartphones to be launched in 2020, not least Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 if rumours are to be believed.

Sky Mobile 5G prices?

The headline that announced Sky Mobile’s foray into 5G heralded it for “free” − but that’s only the case if you sign up to the brand’s loyalty programme, Sky VIP (which customers can join for free via the MySky app). If you’re not signed up to the scheme then you can get access to 5G free for the first month, and then pay £5 per month after that.

If you’re currently a Sky Mobile customer and you’d like to start enjoying the benefits of 5G, then first make sure to have a 5G compatible handset and to check if you live in an area with 5G coverage via the online checker.

Then you can add 5G to your existing plan by choosing a data plan and selecting the 5G add-on. The plans on offer, as described by Sky, are as follows:

  • Roll: with Sky Mobile, unused data is automatically rolled into your Sky Piggybank each month so you get to keep it for up to three years. Unused data rolled into a Sky Piggybank can be redeemed if you need a data boost, or exchanged for money off a new phone, tablet, or mobile accessories
  • Watch: available on all Sky Mobile plans, Watch gives you unlimited streaming on all Sky Apps, including Sky Go, Sky Sports and Sky Kids, without using your data.
  • Mix: Mix lets you change your data allowance, up or down, each month so you only pay for what you need
  • Save: all Sky Mobile’s SIMO and handset plans come with free Unlimited Calls & Texts as standard
  • Swap: Sky Mobile’s Swap plans give you the flexibility to upgrade your phone whenever you like without having to wait until the end of your contract. Or you can upgrade in the last 12 months of your Swap12 or Swap24 at no extra cost. Swap24 guarantees Sky Mobile’s lowest monthly cost on any handset

Sky Mobile 5G speeds

Currently there’s very little information available on the 5G speeds promised on its website, simply stating that it will let you “download HD movies faster than ever” and that in the future you’ll be able to play video games or interact with smart home devices with less lag.

Sky Mobile in fact uses O2 as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), but this network’s website is also vague about the potential 5G speeds it offers, simply writing:

“Much, much quicker than 4G, which means you’ll be able to do everything you do now, but faster. Download a full movie as you run for a train. Enjoy perfect video calling when you’re out and about. And easily upload and email big files, while you work on the go.”

You could head directly to the Sky Mobile website now, but if you want to see the pros and cons of everything on offer then you're in the right place here. Find out details about the network, discover the best deals and learn what's right for you.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about Sky Mobile phone deals.

  • Phone contracts no upfront costs : save at the start with these offerings

What is Sky Mobile?

Sky Mobile is an MVNO which means it offers great deals while using the hardware network infrastructure of O2. That means an excellent 99% UK coverage and the speeds of 5G where available.

The mobile network is a part of Sky, which also offers broadband, TV and landline packages. As a result customers of one can get benefits in another, like Sky TV customers who get special deals on Sky Mobile.

How long are Sky Mobile phone contracts?

Sky Mobile phone contracts come in a few simple options. The two basic contract plans are 24 months or 30 months. There is also a SIM-only 12-month option.

Whichever one you go for it'll be a pay monthly deal and there is rollover data on all of those. They all come with unlimited calls and texts.

What is Swap24 and how does it work?

It requires a few more grey cells to work out, but Sky Mobile's Swap24 tariff can be a great way to get your new phone. and know that you'll have the chance to upgrade later down the line.

In essence, Swap24 is a 36 month contract with the option to upgrade after 24 months. As long as you're phone is in full working order, you can return it to Sky after 24 months which will help pay off the bills of whatever shiny new handset you choose to upgrade to in two years time.

If you get to 24 months with your new phone and decide that you want to keep it for the remainder of the contract, you can of course do that, too.

While the premise is simple, it is important to note that Sky states on their website "full working order with no physical damage".

You can also swap your phone out any time after the first 31 days, you just need to pay what's left in your contract balance after the value of your phone is taken into account.

Is the Sky Mobile network any good?

Sky Mobile runs on the O2 network which means the short answer to this question is yes. The network itself offers a 98.97 percent coverage of the UK making it one of the best - but be sure to use the Sky Mobile coverage checker to make sure you're good in your area.

In the 2020 OpenSignal measure, the average download speeds on Sky Mobile were 18.2Mb. That sounds good but it does make this one of the slowest networks in the UK. That said, according to Ookla tests, O2 has the second fastest 5G coverage in the UK with average download speeds of 176.9Mb and access in over 155 UK towns and cities.

What benefits does Sky Mobile offer?

Sky Mobile has lots going for it but one standout feature is roll over data. This allows you to save up unused data for up to three years. What's more you can share this data with others on the network and use it as currency to buy other benefits.

Being Sky, you get totally free streaming when using any of the Sky apps. That means no use of your data when watching the Sky Go app over a data connection.

Is Sky Mobile a 5G network?

Yes, as mentioned, Sky Mobile is 5G capable and, at time of publishing, covers 155 towns and cities across the UK. This is the second fastest in the UK but there is a catch. It's not free.

Well, 5G is free to Sky VIP members. But for everyone else it's charged at an extra £5 per month to get those blistering top-end speeds. This could be seen as a positive as it means those that don't want 5G don't have a hiked up bill charge without the option to opt-out.

Business mobile phones are exactly what they sound like: a mobile phone that's intended for professional, rather than personal, use. Whether you are a sole trader, employee, or employer, if you use your mobile phone for work then you have a business mobile. Switching to a business mobile from a  VoIP phone system  can also be game changing for today's SMEs. Being much less office-centric, mobile phones are a good choice for modern workplaces with remote teams.

Rather than forcing employees to use personal phones for work matters, a business mobile can be a welcome perk and a handy way of ensuring sensible access to sensitive business data. Another way that a business mobile differs from a personal mobile is the contract's terms and conditions. These are specially designed by mobile providers to cater for employees, and are invoiced directly to the employer.

Business phone contracts come with many advantages for organisations; chief among these is cost. Users will usually pay less than they would for a consumer plan because the VAT can be reclaimed if you’re a VAT-registered business. As for which is the best plan to choose? Here's our roundup:

1. Vodafone : best overall with  excellent customer service and huge variety in plans 2. EE : best for reliable coverage, with outstanding 4G and 5G networks in the UK 3. O2 : best for fair payment plans, and the most generous rewards system

Don't overspend – you can click any of the links above to compare fees on business mobile contracts for your own business's size and needs.

Almost every telecom company upped its prices this past year, and there have been plenty of subsequent changes to tariffs. But, most providers save their best rates for new customers, so it can still be a great time to start or switch a business mobile plan. Switching to a competitively-priced business mobile contract can save you money –  essential in today's poor economy.

During our research to find the right business mobile plan, we compared the top providers for three key mobile phone metrics we know are important to small business owners: network connectivity, customer support, and value for money.

We then used our results to build our simple online comparison tool. This helps you compare mobile plan costs quickly and easily , and find the best mobile phone provider to switch to with obligation-free quotes.

In this article you will learn:

Best business mobile phone providers, how does a business mobile phone contract work, benefits of switching to a business mobile phone contract, compare business mobile deals.

  • Business mobile phone FAQs

To create the below list of the best business mobile phone providers, we spent days researching the top 10 providers based in the UK. We focused our analysis on what Startups' readers told us are the three most important factors for small businesses. These are:

1. Value for money – we took upfront costs, contract length, data allowances, and seasonal deals and discounts into consideration. We also looked at split deals (monthly fees that automatically reduce once the handset has been paid for).

2. Coverage and speed – SMEs don’t have time to hang around for slow download speeds, or risk a new client call not getting through. We used the 2023 Ofcom customer service report (released in May) to guide our analysis of each provider's data speeds.

3. Customer support – switching any business technology will come with a few challenges. We also used the Ofcom report for the help and support options available to users, and how quickly each provider's support team responds to queries, on average.

We regularly update this page to ensure we are giving you accurate and up-to-date information about the best business phone contract to switch to.

There are lots of different factors that business owners need to consider when switching their mobile contract. The best plans improve your company's efficiency with a bounty of essential features and generous allowances while the wrong choice could lose you money and create a negative customer experience.

Searching for the best business phone contract can be confusing and time consuming. In the below guide, we'll break down the top contract providers in the UK, helping you make an informed decision when choosing a business mobile phone deal .

Openreach by BT is currently upgrading the outdated, analogue Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to a faster, full-fibre digital network. By the end of December 2025, any business or home phone call will instead be hosted over Internet Protocol (IP). Named the ‘ Big Switch Off ’, the move has big implications for any firm using broadband in its operations. In today’s world, that’s pretty much everyone.

To prepare for the change , all existing phone systems and older internet connections – including any used by hardware like card machines and CCTV – will need to transition to an IP mode. Therefore, abandoning your business landline and switching to a business mobile will be the best option.

Vodafone: Best for a wide range of business mobile contracts that support scale-up

sky mobile business plans

  • Value for money 4.5
  • Coverage and speed 5
  • Customer support 4
  • Generous Rewards scheme for pay-as-you-go customers
  • Easy to get help from business mobile experts thanks to Vodafone's 500 UK stores
  • Global roaming: Select plans let you use your UK allowances overseas for no extra charge
  • Slightly lower Ofcom complaints solving rating compared to rivals
  • Unlimited data plans are a lot more expensive for monthly contracts (prices start from £23 per month)

Is Vodafone good value for money?

Vodafone offers good value for money and has a vast mix of pay-monthly offers for business use. Plus, it offers tons of trials and discounts so you can try before you buy , reducing the risk of spending money on the wrong product plan.

Small business phone contracts

Vodafone offers a range of plans that will suit the budgets and needs of most small business owners. The most popular ones are:

  • Vodafone Business Evolve – a flexible option that is great for SMEs. If you're undecided about what you want from your plan, do not worry. This option will let you change your mind about data allowances or devices whenever, so you can alter your plan based on the growth of your business.
  • Vodafone Business Advance – if you have a growing team and need access to a large number of resources, then this plan is the best choice as it offers employees unlimited data, texts, and calls.
  • Vodafone Business Optimiser – plans can change. If you want to avoid nasty surprises on your phone bill, this clever solution will automatically adapt to the amount of data or calls you're carrying out, so you'll never pay more than you can afford.
  • Vodafone Business Freedom –   for SMEs making international calls or business trips, this plan lets you manage usage so you won't incur any hidden fees when you travel or call abroad.

You can also personalise your plan with add-ons including Device Support and Rapid Insurance, so whatever you want to prioritise as a small business owner – the choice is yours.

SIM only business phone contracts

Vodafone's SIM only plans are  a great option if you want to keep your existing phone and save on minutes, texts, and data .

The SIM only data plans are ideal for companies with fewer than 50 employees. At the moment, these start at a tidy £19.17 a month (ex. VAT) for the Red 150GB plan. This increases to £33.33 per month (ex. VAT) for the Unlimited Max + 3 Xtra benefits + Entertainment plan.

Pay-as-you-go business phone contracts

Pay-as-you-go customers also get some nice perks and freebies – like the Freebie International Minutes plan , giving you more free international minutes the more you top up.

There's also a generous Rewards loyalty scheme available, where you'll get points for every top-up that you can put towards more calls and data – or even your next smartphone.

What is Vodafone's coverage and speed like?

As one of the UK's biggest mobile providers, Vodafone runs its own network, offering 2G, 3G, and 4G coverage across the UK. In the USwitch ranking of the top providers for mobile coverage in the UK, Vodafone came second behind EE, which boasts 97% population coverage for 4G.

5G availability

According to its online directory , Vodafone offers 5G in 124 UK towns and cities. This is not the most extensive list on the market. No new locations have been added in over a year (for comparison, Three caters for over 300 towns and cities.)

In August 2023, Vodafone announced it had acquired Three , another major network player. As part of the merger, Vodafone has pledged to reach more than 99% of the UK population with its 5G standalone network by 2034.

Many providers – including BT, Plusnet and EE – increase their prices each year in line with the inflation rate, plus their own extra rate of 3.9%.

From April 1, Vodafone announced on its website it has raised its prices mid-contract for broadband customers by 14.4%. Given that most providers save the best prices for new customers, switching can often save you money. Use our cost comparison tool to start comparing plans now.

Is Vodafone good for customer support?

In its 2023 report on mobile and landline customer service, Ofcom found that Vodafone scored 56% for complaints handling . This number is nothing to write home about, but it is an increase from its 2022 complaint satisfaction rating of 53%.

That said, Vodafone does have a higher  overall customer satisfaction score on this list than Virgin Media O2 (86% vs. 83%). Should things ever go awry, or you need support with setup, Vodafone is also one of the easiest phone companies to get help from as it has 500 shops across the UK.

Finally, we like that Vodafone offers 30 days to try out your phone and coverage, and if business users are not impressed, they'll get a full refund. This is well above the typical 14 days offered by other companies like O2.

Want to find out more about how our top rated business mobile plan provider stands up against its rivals? Use our online tool to compare Vodafone's business mobile deals today.

O2: Best for its low-cost payment plans and excellent customer rewards program

O2 logo

  • Coverage and speed 4
  • Excellent range of perks and offers for employees
  • More generous European roaming charges than rivals like Three and EE
  • Because deals tend to be longer (typically 24 months), O2's upfront costs are lower
  • Helpline waiting times can be lengthy
  • There has been a small increase in the number of O2 customer complaints between 2021 and 2022
  • Plans tend to be less flexible and tie users in for longer (especially SIM only plans)

Is O2 good value for money?

Ofcom's 2023 report shows that 79% of customers are happy with O2's value for money (compared with just 74% of EE's customers). In August 2023, the provider also released its own cost calculator for users to check if they are overpaying for their smartphone, emblematic of O2's commitment to save its customers money.

O2 welcomes small businesses with open arms via its dedicated Small Biz tariffs. You can choose between SIM only, SIM+phone, and pay-as-you-go deals, all of which are competitively priced. For just £16 per month you can access 20GB of data on a two-year, SIM only deal – more than enough for most small business owners.

Last year, Virgin Mobile joined forces with BT for business mobile customers to create a shared offering called Volt. Virgin Mobile will be fully phased out, with all business mobile customers moved to an O2 plan ( which is why we have removed our review of Virgin Mobile from this page ).

This means that any mobile user on O2 will be able to choose Virgin Media broadband for a broadband speed boost and double data.

As with Vodafone, millions of O2 customers were hit with price hikes of around £50 a year on April 1.

O2 and Virgin Mobile confirmed that customer bills would rise as a result of inflation. Still, while an increase of £50 is hardly welcome, O2 plans will still likely remain cheaper than more costly rivals like EE.

Given that most providers save the best prices for new customers, switching can often save you money. Use our cost comparison tool to start comparing plans now.

O2 SIM only business phone contracts

O2's 12-month SIM only tariffs start from just £10 per month for 1GB. For unlimited data allowance (both 4G and 5G), prices start from £24 per month for a two year contract.

What is O2's coverage and speed like?

O2 has its own network and offers 2G, 3G and 4G coverage. Coverage experts OpenSignal, in their September 2022 report , found that O2 customers had the least consistent coverage at 66.1% of the time – just behind Vodafone and EE (with 70% and 77.5% access, respectively).

O2 currently provides 192 UK towns and cities with 5G (you can check whether you're covered using their up-to-date online tracker ).

O2 also allows business customers to create their own private 5G network to ensure reliable connectivity and enhanced security. If you run a SME that works with advanced technologies such as robotics, you can enquire about a private 5G network online.

Is O2 good for customer support?

As one of the UK's largest mobile phone providers, customers can reach the network at one of its hundreds of high street stores, where you’ll benefit from the expertise of the company's ‘O2 Gurus'.

According to Ofcom's 2023 report, O2 has one of the lowest percentages of customers with a reason to complain, with just 9% of O2 business users saying they were happy with the way their complaint was dealt with. With O2 Priority, you can expect many perks, like pre-sale tickets. There’s also O2 Rewards, which gives PAYG customers a percentage of your spend on credit.

Many small business owners spend most of their days hooked up to their WiFi, so data usage may be less than you’d expect. 10GB to 15GB mobile data  is usually plenty for most small business owners and entrepreneurs.

If you try Googling Virgin Mobile, you'll notice their webpage no longer exists. That's because they were acquired by O2. Similarly, EE and BT were merged.

EE: Best for 5G coverage and super fast download speeds

EE logo

  • Value for money 3.5
  • Customer support 4.5
  • My EE Bill Analyser helps employees stay on top of their phone bills
  • Wide-ranging 4G and 5G coverage with the fastest download speeds in the UK
  • Free replacement for 24 months in case of breakage or damage
  • Lower money satisfaction score with customers than Vodafone
  • Roaming charges returned in January 2022 - not good for firms with employees based abroad

Is EE good value for money?

EE is unlikely to appear on any budget-topping lists. If you value good data allowance and coverage for your business' needs, they’re unrivalled, but you will pay for the privilege. This is why the customer satisfaction with value for money is a measly 74%, according to Ofcom's 2023 report.

The top business mobile phone plans from EE start at a pricey £13 a month for a SIM only contract, but you'll get unlimited data. However, EE's rates are much less competitive when you add in the cost of a mobile device. A Google Pixel 8 Pro with EE is £51 per month – more expensive than Vodafone (£37 per month).

Like O2's partnership with Virgin Mobile, BT recently partnered with EE to hand over the responsibilities for its business mobile customers. That means BT broadband customers may be able to get exclusive deals on EE business mobile plans when they join EE (this is also why we removed our review of BT from this list).

Small business owners can choose between EE's Essential plans or Max plans. They start at just £15 a month, and include access to 5G roaming (if your chosen mobile device is compatible).

EE customers were hit with price hikes of 14.4% on April 1 2023, which is the same cost increase that Vodafone and O2 introduced.

Does EE have good coverage and speed?

EE pioneered 4G (super-fast wireless internet) and it still offers the best download speeds and coverage. According to OpenSignal's September 2022 report, EE's download speed was the fastest in the UK with a score of 55.8 – this is 21.3% faster than the runner-up brand, Three.

EE offers 5G for customers in 162 towns and cities across the UK. It's currently the best provider on the market for 5G in terms of coverage – users had the fastest overall speed on EE, with scores of 109.5 megabyte per second for Download Speed Experience. You can check if your area is covered using the EE online tool.

Is EE good for customer support?

EE doesn’t have a leading reputation for top customer service. However, the 2023 Ofcom customer service report for mobile phone providers shows it achieves a satisfaction score of 86%, which puts it on par with Vodafone and O2.

With more than 500 stores up and down the country, EE is one of the biggest phone providers, so it will be there should your small business need them. It even offers free phone replacements if anything goes wrong within the first year.

Nonetheless, the call waiting time for EE's customer support team lets it down. As we've noted above, users will be waiting almost a full minute longer to speak to an EE representative, on average, when compared with O2.

Want to save time? If you’d like a quicker way to compare phone plan providers, we've designed a simple online tool you can use to compare mobile contracts for your business. It's free of charge and gives you expert advice instantly.

Upfront, business mobile phone contracts are considerably cheaper than personal ones. This is a deliberate decision on the part of the provider because these are generally bought in bulk and distributed across a business. This means the phone company can afford to lower the price of its contracts.

Company phones also qualify as a business expense, so you can offset the cost of your phones by claiming them against your annual tax return . Here are three other key differences that separate a consumer mobile phone plan from a business mobile phone plan:

1. Data allowance

If you need to check spreadsheets on the go or stream video calls, you'll need a larger data allowance. Business phone contracts are more than likely to have unlimited data or a shared pool for employees over personal ones.

2. Repair and maintenance costs

Business mobile contracts will typically offer repairs and maintenance for any damage or malfunctioning software as part of the contract rather than as an add-on.

3. Easy-to-manage accounts

With a business phone contract, your team's spend on minutes or data will be saved on a single bill. If an employee racks up an expensive phone bill to a client in China, you can easily expense it, rather than spend weeks combing through phone records for the accounting team.

If your business currently uses a VoIP phone system or landline to make and take calls, you might be wondering if, and why, you should switch to a business mobile phone plan instead. Certainly, running your business from a mobile phone comes with some real advantages:

1. Reduces running costs: Mobile contracts can start from as low as £30 per month for the latest handsets. Plus, you won't compromise on functionality. Most smartphones still run all business applications, like Microsoft Teams or Outlook.

2. Encourages business growth: Unlike landlines, you can purchase as many business mobiles as you'd like for your team – helping you to adapt your business to today's uncertain economy.

3. Increases mobility: Business mobiles allow you to take your entire workstation anywhere – as long as there's an internet connection.

What types of businesses are mobile phones suited for?

In today's online world, any company will benefit from having a mobile phone. However, there are some specific use cases where mobile phones are paramount to your team's success. These are:

1. If you are currently connected to the PSTN: in December 2024, the Big Switch Off will see every landline currently connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network shut off. Turning to business mobile plans will mean you can avoid the admin woes of having to buy a whole new phone system.

2. If your team is in the field a lot: if you have sales reps or contractors who don't work in the office should consider investing in a business mobile over a personal contract. With more and more companies doing business over Whatsapp, having a business phone that's separate to your private number will look more professional and help you keep work and home life separate.

3. If you are a remote or hybrid team: UK employees increasingly work from home some, if not all, of the time. Business phones are a good way to maintain communication and collaboration when teams are based miles apart. Plus, having separate work and home numbers will improve work-life balance and help them avoid stressful notifications at the dinner table.

Business impact of switching from landline to mobile

Naturally, any good business owner will be concerned about the potential negative impact of migrating to a new business technology. Here are three things you should consider before pressing the trigger and switching to a business mobile contract:

1. Will I have downtime when switching? Almost definitely not. Business mobile phone SIMs can be activated instantly, so you will be able to open your new line of communciation immediately after your handset arrives. The only issue could be in switching your business phone number, which can take a few days to complete – more on this below.

2. Is it really the cheapest option? It's possible that neither a mobile phone nor a landline are the cheapest option for your company. VoIP phone system costs can start from as little as £5 per month for a high-quality call connection hosted over the internet. Plus, many come with free mobile apps, so you can use your personal mobile to answer calls made to your business number.

3. How do I divert my business number? Switching to a mobile phone from a landline or VoIP system will mean your business number changes. You can bite the bullet and simply change your contact information to the new number. Or, you can use number porting to keep the same number, which takes a few days to complete. Our guide to business mobile phone numbers has more information on the options available.

Some of the best business mobile phones in 2024 are:

  • Apple iPhone 15 Pro – the best business phone from Apple; offers all-day battery, durable handset, and powerful processing
  • Apple iPhone 14 Pro –  essentially the Pro Max's younger brother; its more compact, lightweight design is great for doing business on the go
  • Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra – top chipset, powerful camera and a super high-res screen make this a great choice for running your business on the go
  • Google Pixel 8 Pro – fantastic integrations with (you guessed it) Google drive, this is the search giant's first attempt at an ultra-high-tech phone and it's certainly a success
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 –  this ‘phablet' (phone/tablet) is the future of smartphones. Its dual display is excellent for messaging, multitasking, and video calling

The above list is a good place to start if you're looking for a reliable, effective business mobile phone. If you're looking to keep costs down, take a look at our list of best budget smartphones for business .

When should I switch my business mobile phone tariff?

If your business phone contract is drawing to an end, here are five reasons to consider switching your tariff:

  • You’re paying too much and think you can find a better deal elsewhere
  • You’re always having connectivity issues or running out of data
  • You’re disappointed with the customer support team
  • You want the latest handset model for yourself or your team
  • You have multiple phones on different contracts and want to align them all to one provider

If you already have a business phone tariff, it's still a good idea to keep an eye out for competitor deals. The top three providers (Vodafone, O2, and EE) are constantly releasing new sign-up deals to entice switchers, so you could end up saving hundreds of pounds each month if you regularly change providers.

Remember , if your contract is coming to an end, you should also check first with the provider to see if they'll offer you a split deal. This is where the phone handset has been paid off, and so the network gives you a cheaper deal on your contract.

Let us help. Our specially-designed, 100% free online comparison tool will match you with the most suitable mobile network providers for your needs in just one minute.

Now you have a better idea of what the mobile phone network providers are really like, the next step is to find out which ones are offering the best deals for the mobile phone you're interested in.

Every business will have different requirements from its mobile network. Here are three questions to ask yourself to help you pick out the best business mobile phone provider based on your specific organisational needs:

1. Is it good value for money? 2. What is the coverage like? 3. What customer support features are there?

Above, our research team has reviewed the top providers based on these three questions. Save time and money by using our simple cost comparison form to be paired with the mobile network that best fits your business needs, today.

  • Are business mobile plans cheaper? Yes. Business mobile phone plans tend to prioritise data and call allowance, which is why they are usually the cheaper option for businesses compared to consumer mobile phone plans.
  • Can I get a phone contract through my business? Yes. Just make sure you sign up to the contract with your business name and information. Provided each staff member is only given one mobile, you can deduct the cost of each mobile phone and any related bills as a business expense.
  • Should I use a separate phone for business? Business phones look more professional to customers. They also ensure you are protecting potentially sensitive business data, and can be used to add useful customer service features like forwarding any calls to team members. Finally, they'll make work more manageable, as employees can more easily differentiate between work and personal calls.
  • What phone do most business owners use? Smartphones are definitely a must-have for a business phone, as the best option for on-the-go working and productivity. We recommend either the Google Pixel 7 Pro or the Apple iPhone 14 Pro as two good business models for 2023.

Business.org’s 5 best business cell phone plans

At&t: best full-featured plans.

Looking for a broad choice of bells and whistles? As a telecom behemoth, AT&T has plenty of cell phone features and packages to offer businesses—around 20 plan variations, small to large. All plans include free US roaming, unlimited talk and text messages, as well as unlimited texting outside of the country. Basic features like call forwarding, voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, and conference calling also come standard with all AT&T business cell phone plans, along with bring-your-own-phone support.

AT&T's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Business Unlimited plan prices start at $30 a month per line when you sign up for 6+ lines, or $60 a month for one line. Data is unlimited, but speeds may slow down after reaching the GB included in each plan.

AT&T business plans can also accommodate up to 10 lines per account, and they come fully loaded with perks like AT&T ActiveArmor SM mobile security and Video Management. Video Management automatically optimizes streaming video on your phone to 480p so you can watch webinars on the go without dealing with a blurry picture.

Each plan also includes a decent array of iOS and Android smartphone options and even a few good old flip phones. Users can save money when bundling AT&T-owned DIRECTV services (because, again, telecom behemoth). Military veterans can also qualify for a 25% discount on Business Unlimited plans.

Users are eligible for a discount if they elect for autopay and paperless billing, but this discount is only applied until after two pay periods. We don't know why the discount cannot be applied earlier in the billing process, but we do find it frustrating.

T-Mobile: Best flexible plans

Not sure exactly what you’ll need in a mobile plan besides future adaptability? T-Mobile, the third-largest wireless service in the US, offers three business plans, all packed with unique features that set T-Mobile apart from the rest. The German-owned company has also earned a reputation for stellar customer service and was the first to eliminate annual contracts (an idea that stuck—none of the plans reviewed on this page require contracts). In April 2018, the company announced its intention to merge with Sprint under the T-Mobile banner.

T-Mobile's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *Price available with 6+ lines

All of T-Mobile’s Business cell phone plans offer the same basic features:

  • Unlimited talk and text
  • Unlimited 5G and 4G LTE data on their network
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot
  • Scam Shield
  • Unlimited calling and texting to Mexico & Canada
  • Unlimited video streaming

In addition, all T-Mobile Business plans include DIGITS, an app that allows you to access up to five phone numbers on a single device. That means you could answer calls to your work number and personal number on one device—no more packing two phones in your bag every day. DIGITS also lets you share your phone number across multiple devices, so you can answer on your phone, smartwatch, tablet, or computer.

T-Mobile’s Business plans cover up to 12 lines. If you need more than 12 lines, you’ll need to sign up for the Enterprise Phone Plan (13+ lines). This includes a fixed rate of $285 per month for 13 lines, plus $25 per month for each additional line.

T-Mobile plans also allow bring-your-own-device convenience, or you can buy phones upfront with a single payment (there are nearly 40 iOS and Android phones to choose from).

I couldn't find solid info verifying this pricing so I'm not sure if it's still accurate

Now that T-Mobile and Sprint have been merged for almost six months, some significant changes have taken effect. T-Mobile’s website is now the only place businesses can sign up for Sprint or T-Mobile business phone accounts.

Sprint still has an active business website for previous users but all new plans will be sold by T-Mobile on its website.

Verizon: Best growing business plans

Serving over 150 million customers, Verizon isn’t just big, it’s BIG. Such a mobile mammoth might not seem like the obvious choice for a small business, but for what it lacks in a personalized customer service reputation, Verizon more than makes up for by offering every cell phone feature there is, as well as dominant US, and near-dominant global, coverage. Like McDonald’s and Marvel movies, Verizon is everywhere.

Verizon's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *With 5+ lines

While business owners can get business cell phone plans with limited data, we recommend choosing an unlimited plan if you have multiple employees (or do a lot of work via cell phone).

Verizon’s Business Unlimited cell phone plans are scalable for multiple employees. With plans starting at just $30 per line, Verizon Business Unlimited plans are an attractive option, whether you’re running a tiny company with no expansion plans, a medium-sized business with an eye toward growth, or a large enterprise with heavy cell phone requirements.

Verizon Business Unlimited Plus and Pro plans also include a TravelPass (2–4 days per month), so you can do business around the world. Each plan also includes unlimited calling and texting to Mexico and Canada.

Verizon doesn’t skimp on device choices either. There are nearly 100 iOS and Android phones and tablets available—including the Verizon Orbic Speed, a mobile hotspot device that can connect 10 devices to an 802.11 ac Wi-Fi network.

If your company requires truly “unlimited” cell phone service and scalability to grow, and is in the position to pay for functionality with frills, Verizon Business Unlimited is the way to go. Bare-bones operations, however, might want to look elsewhere.

Each of our recommendations has its strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes the most difficult part about finding a phone system is determining exactly what you need and don't need. The best place to start is separating your needs between installing a new system, replacing a system, or expanding an existing system.

If you are having trouble sorting out exactly what your phone needs are, use this tool to help you understand what the best options are for your unique needs.

MintMobile: Most affordable plans

We are sure you’ve seen the commercials with Ryan Reynolds talking about this phone carrier business with a fox logo called Mint Mobile. In fact, a lot of Mint customers were drawn to Mint because of Ryan Reynolds's Hollywood looks, but that’s not the only thing Mint has to offer.

Mint is inexpensive and transparent, compared to other cell phone carriers with hidden fees and seemingly random regulations.

MintMobile's business cell phone plans

These are the prices for new customers and will last up to three months. After the third month, you are eligible to sign up for a 3, 6, or 12-month contract on one of the tiered plans, all $35/mo/user or under, which is astronomically less than other providers.

MintMobile is no fuss, and you really do feel like you must be tricking the rest of the world with its pricing. The only issue is that MintMobile is an online company, and coverage is not completely everywhere yet. There are still some coverage gaps in the West, namely Nevada, Idaho, and Arizona. If you live east of the Rocky Mountains, you are good to go!

Teltik: Best perks plans

If you’re a strapped startup, New Jersey’s Teltik can get you up and running on the cheap. Teltik is a reseller service operating on T-Mobile’s 4G LTE and 5G network, meaning it can offer the reliability and reach of a giant provider at smaller-company prices. Teltik also has the advantage of being completely US-based, with 24/7 local customer service that’s not outsourced overseas.

Teltik's business cell phone plans

3 more (non-business) cell phone plans reviewed by business.org.

Teltik appears to have a dozen plans, but they’re mostly just variations of the essential plan that offers all the expected basics. Not coincidentally, the features mirror those of T-Mobile, as they’re on the same network.

The most basic plan starts at $20 a month and includes unlimited calling and texting, mobile hotspot service, and unlimited data—with a 2 GB cap on 5G speeds (meaning your speed gets throttled to 128 Kbps if you use more than 2 GB of data in a month). From there, you can upgrade your plan to include more 4G or 5G data and more mobile hotspot data. Upgraded plans cost anywhere from $30 to $40 per month, and they all include one cloud-phone VoIP line—perfect for small businesses looking to save on all their telecommunications needs.

One distinctly entertaining feature (pun intended) of Teltik’s business plans? You get unlimited media streaming from over 40 music services (including Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music) and more than 100 video services (including YouTube, Netflix, and any other channel you can think of). That means you can stream as much TV as you want without it eating into your data. It’s almost as if Teltik doesn’t want you to get any work done.

Another thing you need to know: Teltik doesn’t sell phones. Instead, the company operates on a strict bring-your-own-device basis. Any unlocked phone will work with its network, as will any T-Mobile device, of course. However, you will have to spend $10 plus shipping and handling to buy a new SIM card for each of your devices (unless they’ve already got brand-new, unused T-Mobile SIM cards).

Boost Mobile

The takeaway

Assess your company’s current cell phone usage and projected future needs before diving into any plan. What looks like a great deal could turn out to be more than you actually need—or you may have initially underestimated your business’s cell phone requirements. Also, if your company has both cell phone and regular office phone needs, look into bundling. The larger telecom providers offer both types of phone coverage, and bundling services is an easy way to save money in the long run.

Don’t want to carry around separate phones for work and personal calls? With the right VoIP service, you don’t have to. Check out our favorite business VoIP providers to see which ones offer on-the-go business phone capabilities.

Business cell phone plan FAQs

If you have several employees working outside of the office on a regular basis, desk-bound phones obviously aren’t going to work for them. Some may be only calling and texting while others will be checking email, using GPS navigation, and accessing the internet for work, but a cell phone is a must for employees in the field.

If you’re a one-person operation accountable to only yourself, you could get by with a personal cell plan. Keeping track of multiple employees’ hours, data, and providers, however, would be an extra headache you don’t need. For streamlining and collaboration purposes, a business cell phone plan would be the easier route.

Most of the plans we’ve reviewed here offer unlimited data—domestically, at least—so hitting the data ceiling won’t likely be an issue. But if you want to forecast how much data your business uses every month, or want to figure out how much premium data you’ll need, providers make data plan estimators available on their websites. Or you could use a third-party calculator app.

BYOD stands for bring your own device . Another common term is BYOP for bring your own phone . This means that employees are using their personal phones, tablets, or laptops on their own carrier plans for work or that they’ve put those devices on the company’s plan. The upside? It’s less expensive than buying devices. The downside? Extra security concerns.

In the annoying absence of Wi-Fi, you can use a cell phone signal to connect a wireless device to the internet by switching on the mobile hotspot option and simply treating it like a Wi-Fi router. For multiple device connections, a dedicated hotspot (such as Verizon’s Orbic Speed ) can provide a faster, and more stable, connection.

In this two-part feature, we're exploring what Britons cutting back on booze, and students not going out as much, means for the night-time economy. Part one looked at the possible death of the nightclub - read that here . Today,  Emily Mee looks at how businesses are adapting...

The UK's nightlife economy is at risk unless it can adapt to changing attitudes towards alcohol.

As we mentioned in the first part of this feature, adults - especially the younger generations - are drinking far less, and skipping big nights out to save money.

So what will tempt customers back?

For Karl Considine, the "alternative choice" his alcohol-free cocktail bar offers appears to be a huge success.

Love From in Manchester is regularly packed with people sipping cocktails and enjoying a fun night out - but the difference is, everyone there is sober.

"I'm really clear on that - we're a night-time venue, not a daytime venue. We don't do coffee, drinks or hot food," he says.

Karl himself has struggled with alcohol addiction in the past, when he could "never just have a quiet night" and would "always want to take it further".

While Love From ( @love.fromco ) is a safe space for those in recovery, Karl is clear the bar is "absolutely" for everyone - including those who are drinkers but just want something different.

He's had to deal with trolls online who don't understand the concept, but he says he's had positive feedback from customers and gets "nice messages" online every day.

Will alcohol-free bars become more popular?

Love From is not the only alcohol-free night-time venue to have popped up in recent years - among others, there's London's LGBT club night House of Happiness, and the alcohol-free bar and shop Club Soda.

But Laura Willoughby, who runs Club Soda, says she doesn't think we'll see a huge increase in alcohol-free venues because "what people actually want is choice".

"Ultimately, everywhere where alcohol is served there should be a good choice of alcohol-free so whoever's in your party can make a choice about what they want to do," she says.

She explains that Club Soda runs workshops for retailers to learn about alcohol-free products, and those who ended up expanding their alcohol-free menus have seen their group bookings increase.

"Everybody wants to have a nice time - they don't want to sit there with a tap water or a very sugary soda which they can only have one of - they want to participate fully," she says.

No longer an afterthought

Low and no-alcohol products are now the fastest growing part of the industry.

Drinks expert Dan Whiteside says the amount and range of products has "exploded" in recent years, and they can be found in most bars and restaurants.

And Liam Davy, head of bars at steakhouse chain Hawksmoor, says he's seen a "big spike" in sales of non-alcoholic drinks.

His company has started paying more attention to that section of the menu "when, to be honest, in the past it might have been a bit more of an afterthought or something aimed at kids".

Although most pub and restaurant chains have adapted and now have better low and no-alcohol drinks menus, he says smaller businesses have been slower to make changes.

Then there's that pervasive marketing problem - the perception that some of these products are overpriced, meaning people will instead opt for a cheap cola or lemonade when they're not drinking.

So is there anything else businesses can do?

Sacha Lord, night-time economy adviser for Greater Manchester, says he has been advising pubs to offer more event-based nights, such as darts or quizzes, to get people back in the door.

This is an opinion shared by Laura, who says Gen Z is much more experience-led in their social lives.

"It's not based around the strength of the drink in their glass and more about lovely evenings out," she says.

As we reported on Tuesday, most English councils with responsibility for social care are increasing council tax by the maximum 4.99% allowed from 1 April, or have a special dispensation to go higher.

Of the 129 (out of 137) such councils to have published their plan, only eight are going below the maximum threshold, though not by much. The lowest rises are Hartlepool at 2.99% and Rotherham at 3.5%.

Use this table to see how much council tax is increasing in your area...

The maximum 4.99% annual rise only applies to councils in England that have responsibility for social care. For those that do not, the maximum hike without a referendum is 2.99%.

Where will it go up by more?

The government is allowing  Birmingham  and  Woking  to raise council tax by up to 10% - and  Thurrock  and  Slough  can put bills up 8%. All have effectively declared themselves bankrupt.

What about Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Councils in Wales must plug funding gaps of nearly £360m in 2024-25.

The caps don't apply - so proposed hikes vary wildly from 3% in  Cardiff  to between 16% and 21% in  Pembrokeshire  - a record.

In Northern Ireland,  Mid and East Antrim  has the highest uplift in household rates at 9.78%.  Lisburn  and  Castlereagh  is the lowest at 3.98%.

In  Scotland , the devolved government announced a council tax freeze for the coming year.

We've been chatting to personal stylist  Lindsay Edwards  about how to boost your confidence through fashion - and without breaking the bank.

Ms Edwards says the best place to start is within your own wardrobe - as most people get into a habit of buying more without taking items out.

You might even find items you'd forgotten about, or ones that could be given a new lease of life with a little altering.

For example, you can change the colour of items that are "looking a little bit tired or jaded" by buying a pod of Dylon dye for £7 and popping it in the washing machine.

Ms Edwards also suggests changing the buttons on pieces or getting them altered for a better fit.

She says it's worth dedicating an afternoon or a day to sorting through your wardrobe and trying on each item, mixing and matching pieces in ways you haven't tried before.

"Lots of people get into a bit of a rut of matching that top with those bottoms. Sometimes it's just changing the way you wear that top - rather than just wearing those bottoms, have you got any skirts that work with it?" she says.

You could get a stylist, a friend or an honest family member to give their thoughts.

Ms Edwards says people are usually not wearing about 80% of their wardrobe - so you should identify what you're not using and be prepared to say goodbye to it.

This will help "get rid of the noise" of having too much in your wardrobe, and could earn you some cash if you decide to sell your clothes on a platform such as Vinted.

Ms Edwards also recommends thinking about what clothes you have and identifying what the gaps are - particularly if you're missing basic items.

Neutral colours are more versatile, and accessories can also change the way an outfit looks.

Everyone's personal style is different, but if you need a little inspiration here's what Ms Edwards recommends you should have in your wardrobe...

Great fitting pair of jeans  - Ms Edwards suggests going for a dark indigo denim as it can be easily dressed up or down. She says while light stonewash jeans are great in spring and summer, they don't work as well in the colder months.

Well-fitting blazer  - Ms Edwards says she buys an M&S ruched sleeve blazer pretty much every year and it works well for all occasions. It makes great workwear, can be dressed down with a pair of jeans and T-shirt, or can be popped over a dress when it gets chilly in the evening.

Light jacket  - Pick something that goes with your natural style, whether that's a denim jacket, biker jacket or military jacket.

Evening pair of shoes in a nude colour  - Nude heels elongate the legs and go with everything. You can pair with jeans and a T-shirt for a "chic and elevated" look, or take it from day to night with a dress in any colour.

White pair of trainers  - Again, these go with anything.

Metallic shoes  - Whether it's sandals, flip-flops or heels, picking colours such as bronze, rose gold, silver and gold will also go with anything and are great for taking on holiday.

Five major lenders hiked mortgage rates this week - HSBC, Santander, Coventry and TSB.

The reason for these increases is that swap rates - which dictate how much it costs lenders to offer mortgages - have been creeping up.

There is a feeling markets may have got carried away with expectations of an early base rate cut this year - leading mortgage rates to fall. What seems to be happening now is a readjustment, with forecasts for a base rate cut having shifted back from May to June.

Here's how average mortgage rates are looking...

Yesterday we found out energy prices would be coming down by £238 from 1 April.

The cap will fall to £1,690 a year for a typical dual-fuel household. The current price cap sits at £1,928 a year for a typical household.

The cap is controlled by energy regulator Ofgem and aims to prevent households on variable tariffs being ripped off.

It doesn't represent a maximum bill. Instead it creates an average bill by limiting how much you pay per unit of gas and electricity, as well as setting a maximum daily standing charge (which all households must pay to stay connected to the grid).

Finally, there was a record surplus in UK government finances in January thanks to a big rise in income tax receipts and lower interest payments on the national debt.

The surplus was £16.7bn - the highest since records began in 1993, but still lower than expected.

Simon French, chief economist at UK investment bank Panmure Gordon, told Sky News income tax receipts were up 11%.

This is largely due to a huge stealth tax imposed by the government in freezing income tax thresholds (instead of raising them in line with inflation) since 2021, dragging many more Britons into paying tax (this is known as "fiscal drag") and raising the amount the rest us pay significantly. The freeze will last for six years.

Jobs growth has also helped increase income tax receipts.

During the first 10 months of the financial year, the government borrowed £96.6bn. That was down £3.1bn on the same period last year and was below forecasts.

The formula for calculating the price cap is the right one for now, but it needs to become more flexible, the Ofgem chief executive has said.

Jonathan Brearley told Sky News that wholesale energy prices changed too often for the system to handle.

He said the government and Ofgem want to see more time-of-use tariffs, which offer cheaper rates at off-peak times.

"There are clearly a number of families still struggling with their bills," he said.

Today's announcement, which will see the cap reduced from £1,928 to £1,690 from 1 April to 30 June, was a "a sign that the market is finally stabilising" but it would be a "fool's game to predict the gas price" beyond July.

"I am more optimistic that things are unwinding compared to where they were last year, but things are still volatile," he said.

Defending the price cap formula, Mr Brearley said: "It adds up as best we can all the costs a company faces - we have to recover those costs and it allows for a very small profit on top of that.

"As we go forward though... we need to ask ourselves is this really flexible enough."

He added: "So it's the right formula for today, but we think you might need to change it in the future."

Apple has fired back at Spotify after the music giant complained App Store rules would force up the price of its subscriptions.

The companies are locked in a battle at the European Commission, which is reportedly close to issuing Apple a €500m fine.

Spotify filed a complaint with the EU in 2019, claiming that Apple limited competition with its 30% fee on purchases made through the store - including subscriptions.

Last month, Spotify urged the UK government to pass a bill banning similar fees or commission charges.

"Fundamentally, their complaint is about trying to get limitless access to all of Apple's tools without paying anything for the value Apple provides," Apple said.

"Spotify pays Apple nothing for the services that have helped them build, update and share their app with Apple users in 160 countries spanning the globe."

Responding to reports of the possible fine, the tech giant said Spotify did not offer subscriptions via the App Store, so it did not pay Apple any commission in the EU.

When filing the complaint in 2019, Spotify founder Daniel Ek wrote: "If we pay this tax, it would force us to artificially inflate the price of our premium membership well above the price of Apple Music. And to keep our price competitive for our customers, that isn’t something we can do."

There are currently no sub-4% mortgage deals on the market.

HSBC was the last lender offering a sub-4% five-year fixed rate at 3.99%, which increased to 4.15% today.

The bank was the first of the so-called big six lenders to bring back sub-4% mortgage rates at the start of January, but competitors raising their rates has forced HSBC to follow suit.

The apparent reason for these increases is that swap rates - which dictate how much it costs lenders to offer mortgages - have been creeping up.

This was echoed by a HSBC spokesperson, who told Sky News: "There are several factors that are taken into account when setting mortgage rates, including swap rates which have increased and like other providers, we have had to reflect that in our mortgage rates."

There is a feeling markets may have got carried away with expectations of an early base rate cut this year - leading mortgage rates to fall.

What seems to be happening now is a readjustment, with forecasts for a base rate cut having shifted back from May to June.

NatWest, Santander, TSB and Coventry Building Society were among other lenders to raise rates this week.

"We're firmly focused on supporting customers to move onto or up the property ladder or renew their mortgage with us," an HSBC spokesperson said.

"As a result, there have been increases to our residential mortgages. We continue to keep our rates under review."

The lowest five-year fix for home buyers and remortgagers on offer now is with First Direct - at 4.04%.

Coca-Cola has announced the return of a cult-favourite flavour to its roster.

Lemon was axed by the brand in 2006, but has now made its triumphant return ahead of the summer - with most major retailers now stocking it.

"We're thrilled to be able to meet consumer demand by expanding our flavour's portfolio with the inclusion of Coca-Cola Lemon – it's quite literally happiness in a bottle!" Laura Moon of Coca-Cola said.

"We're consistently considering new variations and would encourage eagle-eyed Coca-Cola fans to watch this space for more."

A 24-pack of the sugar-free drink straight from  Coca-Cola's website  can be picked up for £12.50 (52p a can), while the regulars area little more at 62p per can - because of the sugar tax.

By Ollie Cooper, Money team

We've all heard consumer advice that's repeated so often it almost becomes cliché. Each week the Money team looks to get to the bottom of a different "fact" and decide whether it's a myth or must.

This week's is...

'Braking less while driving saves you money'

To help answer this one, we've enlisted the help of Stuart Masson, editorial director at The Car Expert .

"You can save a significant amount of money by braking better," Stuart says, adding that it will also make you a safer driver.

Stuart explains that most drivers don't look far enough ahead down the road; they're constantly reacting to what's going on directly in front of them, rather than anticipating what's going to happen.

"That means they tend to brake later and harder, then accelerate harder again to get back up to speed," he says.

This constant cycle of hard braking followed by aggressive accelerating naturally requires more fuel.

"By looking further down the road, and anticipating traffic lights and other vehicles, drivers can ease off the throttle and slow down more gradually," Stuart says.

For example, if you see traffic lights down the road that are red, there's no point continuing to maintain your speed all the way to the lights.

"Instead, lift off the accelerator and coast towards the lights, letting the car slow down more gradually," Stuart suggests. "There's also a chance that the lights will turn green again before you get there, so you don't have to accelerate as much to get back up to speed, again saving you fuel."

I have an electric car - why should I listen to you?

"If you have an electric car, this will also help your car to regain some electricity to the battery - a process car companies call 'energy regeneration', so you'll get more miles from your battery," Stuart adds.

"If you're driving down a hill, you can use your gears to help keep your speed in check, rather than braking constantly to slow down," Stuart says.

"Electric cars usually have an adjustable regeneration setting that mimic this, which returns even more electricity to the battery."

It's not just fuel money you're saving...

You can also make savings with smarter braking by avoiding a hefty bill from the garage at your next service.

"[Braking less also] reduces wear on both your tyres and your brake pads, as well as making the car easier to control in the event of a sudden emergency," Stuart explains.

Considering the average mid-range tyre will set you back £100 each, and brake pads cost around £210 to replace - it's in your wallet's best interests to extend their longevity by looking after them.

Myth or must?

By driving more smoothly, you will save on fuel, brake wear and tyre wear.

We've sifted through the comments you've left in this blog through the week - here's a snapshot...

After we reported on HSBC (and others) hiking mortgage rates on Thursday, one reader got in touch to say...

Soon people won't be able to afford homes due to mortgage interest rates. Myself and my partner are holding off buying our next home. What impact is people not being able to buy homes or delaying buying a home having on the economy? Will mortgage rates ever return to 2/3%? GH home buyer

To answer the first of these points, we learned this week that stamp duty receipts were down 21% in the first 10 months of the financial year - a direct impact on the economy. And on the second point, the Bank of England governor has said he expects the base rate to settle somewhere around 3% in the coming years.

Another reader said...

We recently found mortgage documents from 1989 - rate was 12%. Surely we're all getting carried away here. Mike

Mike is absolutely right to say high rates used to be commonplace, though analysts point to the fact people take on far more debt these days - so 12% now would be far more impactful than in 1989.

One of the biggest stories of the week has been news that most councils in England will be putting up council tax by the maximum in April - so, 4.99% for councils that oversee social care, and 2.99% for those that don't.

Council tax is rapidly becoming the equivalent of a 2nd rent or mortgage payment, a huge monthly bill we will never escape. It offers very little value for money (should be frozen for 5 yrs). Could councils be made to summarise every £ spent in a readable digestible format? ConcernedCitizen

Another commenter summed up her sense of all the above...

How can the government say inflation is dropping, when mortgage rates are rising, my house insurance has gone up by 68% and my car insurance by 46%? They obviously only measure what suits them. 🤬🤬 Grandmother Emilie

Two other stories we covered this week - businesses offering big "signing on" or referral bonuses for new staff, and British companies that trialled a four-day week deciding to make it policy . To end on a more positive tone, a reader named Gaffer73 had this to say on both....

First Bus payed me £9k in bonuses this year for employing 4 qualified drivers, of which 2 have already left for other bus company positions.
I've worked a 4 day week for the last 23 years and wouldn't do anything else now. 3 days off every week is great. Every 3 weeks we have a 6 day rest period on a rolling rota with nearly 6 weeks a year holiday, it's excellent.

We switch on our comment box at various times through the week - use it to let us know what you think of any of the stories we cover.
