Reading is the foundation of every education, and the alphabet is the foundation of reading. Challenge your early reader with these free printable letter A worksheets. There is such a wide variety! There are dot-to-dots, cut and paste letter a activities, pictures to draw, coloring pages, bubble letter a’s, and, of course, lines to trace and then write your own letter A’s.

These worksheets are totally free, so please print as many as you’d like. They can be used by public or private school teachers, by parents running a co-op, by homeschoolers, or by anyone who wants to help their child learn the letter A. Your little learner will have fun with the huge assortment of activities available to him or her.

Once you choose the sheet you want, simply click on it to open it in a new tab. From there, print or download to your machine. There are a few that have 2 pages, and those are displayed with both pages over a yellow background. The actual pages do not have a yellow background, and each of the two sheets takes up a full standard sheet of paper.

Hi Kristy – the plan is to do the entire alphabet like this but we just haven’t got there yet. Sorry!

Looking for some a-a-amazing letter A worksheets for your kindergarten students or preschoolers?

They are a perfect addition to any letter of the week curriculum you’re using. I provide notes for each page, offering my own personal teaching tips and suggestions for the best results with your kid.

Letter A Worksheet 1

All of my free alphabet printables start out with a fun coloring page like this – such a great way to introduce a letter to younger children!

No matter what grade levels you’re teaching, kids will love to learn through pictures. 

Point out each image and make sure the student can correctly identify what it is. See if they can guess what the sound of letter A must be.

****You will notice that all the images in this vowel packet represent the short /a/ sound. Learning the short sounds of vowels is critical for early reading, so I do not introduce any of the other A sounds. There will be no airplanes, angels, artichokes or aquariums that will confuse your younger kids.

Letter A Worksheet 2

This simple tracing worksheet is a fun way to get kids using their fine motor skills – with the least amount of frustration. 

Have them start by following the dashed lines and numbers in the large letters. Tell them how important it to follow the steps of writing the letter, so it comes out correctly.

Then have your student slowly trace the dotted lines to practice their new skill!

Letter A Worksheet 3

This simple writing worksheet is a no-frills way to gently introduce independent writing. 

There are no more dotted lines, but the student can look to the uppercase and lowercase letters at the top of the page as a guide. 

Make sure to tell your child how many letters you expect them to write, maybe 3-4 per line. 

Tell them good-quality letters are much better than many sloppy ones. 

****If more practice is needed, consider sliding this sheet into a page protector for future review with dry erase markers.

Letter A Worksheet 4

Break out your do-a-dot markers!

All of my alphabet kindergarten worksheets feature these fun pages because a dots worksheet makes kids forget they are even learning. 

Tell your student that all the letters have spilled on the floor – uh oh!

They must use their marker and visual discrimination skills to dab all the uppercase letter A circles they can find. 

****There are a couple different ways you could complete this page if you don’t have dot markers. Consider providers other coloring materials, cotton balls, play dough, or any other fun materials you have on hand to cover the circles.

Letter A Worksheet 5

This lowercase letter identification worksheet will have your student hunting for all the lower case letter A circles they can find!

Again, if you don’t have dot markers, your student can still use regular markers, crayons, or whatever you have on hand. 

As you might notice, this might be a little more challenging, as the lowercase /a/ and /o/ look very similar.

Ask your student before she begins what the big difference is between these small letters. This is also a good time to emphasis the different sound these two letters make.

Letter A Worksheet 6

This is one of the alphabet worksheets that helps identify any issues your young children might have with letter sounds.

Go through each of the images and make sure your child knows what they are. 

Really emphasize the initial sound of each word. For example a-a-apple, b-b-book.

Once your kid knows what the pictures are, see if they color apple, astronaut, alligator, ambulance, ant, and ax.

If they color a different picture or don’t color one of the /a/ sound images, talk through it with them. Review the /a/ sound and go through the images again.

This A letter page lets your kid’s creativity shine!

They can draw any /a/ word they’ve learned or one that they thought of by themselves!

Letter A Worksheet 8

These alphabet books are in all of my A to Z letter collection of worksheets, so be sure to hang on to them as your child works through their letters!

They make for a great keepsake and review help. 

The vowels especially need a lot of review as your kindergarten age students start blending sounds.

This letter book might require your little one to broaden his vocabulary, langauge skills, and even geography skills!

Be sure to explain potentially unfamiliar words like Africa (use a globe!), abacus, and asteroid.

Letter A Worksheet 14

Coloring sheets are always a win with younger kids.

Pull out this cute picture of Andy the Ant for extra fun while you watch a Youtube video about anteaters!

Letter A Worksheet 15

This practice sheet gives your child another chance to work on their writing skills with letter a.

First color the cute capital letter A – that is shaped like an alligator!

Then work on writing upper case letter A and lowercase letter /a/ on the blank lines.

Lastly, practice the letter A sound by coloring the ax, apple, astronaut, and ant!

This last sheet is also in all of my worksheet packets and it is such a wonderful way to close out the letter week!

It includes several different activities: tracing, handwriting, letter sounds, and drawing while also doing some fun mazes!

To close out your work on this letter, consider working in physical education with some light a-a-acrobatics!

Letter A Worksheets – 50+ Free Printables

Hello Daydreamers!

As a homeschooling mom, I’m always on the lookout for fun and dynamic ways to teach my children.

I enjoy creating worksheets that not only help my kids learn but also make it fun for them. As a result, I have put together some “A worksheets” that I’d like to share with you for free.

I have included over 50 worksheets to help your child master the letter A. You can print as many pages as you want for your child, student, or homeschooling co-op.

All these pages are in a PDF format and designed to print on letter-sized paper. I tried my best to utilize the space but also give you enough room to perforate them and use a binder.

Feel free to print as many copies of the worksheets as you need for teaching purposes. However, please note that selling or claiming them as your own is prohibited. If you know of any fellow moms or teachers who would like to use them, please share the link to this article with them.

Letter A – Writing Practice Sheets

First, we have the “Letter A – Writing Practice Sheets”. Let’s start by practicing the letter “A” in uppercase and lowercase.

I’ve also included letter formation prompts to help guide your child’s writing.

Depending on your child’s age, they may only write a few letters, and that’s perfectly fine!

I’ve provided a few different options for these practice sheets so you can offer some variety and keep things interesting.

At the bottom of some of these writing practice worksheets, you’ll find an additional component to spark your student’s curiosity.

If you have very young children, 2-3, you may want to start with something short, like the following practice sheet.

Cursive A – Writing Practice Sheets

Next, we have the “Cursive A – Writing Practice Sheets” that include letter formation prompts to guide your child while learning to write cursive uppercase and lowercase “A.”

Kids aren’t taught cursive writing that much anymore, but I read it can still be very beneficial because it builds fine motor skills and can activate a distinct part of the brain compared to regular writing.

I also included the letter formation prompt so you can guide your student while he learns how to write.

  • Cursive uppercase A: Fall back around, up, down, curve up.
  • Cursive lowercase a: Fall back around, up, down, curve up.

Although similar to other A sheets, each one has a different illustration.

Printing one of these worksheets can also give you extra ideas. For instance, you can do a small lesson about aquariums and angelfish.

I’ve also included the ASL sign for the cursive A.

After your child colors and traces the worksheet, you can have them cut small pieces of paper and glue them to fit the letters.

Find, Color, and Circle Worksheets

The “Find, Color, and Circle Worksheets” are great for younger students as they don’t take much time but place a great emphasis on the letter “A.”

Tip: If you’re in a one-to-one setting, allow the child to use a special marker so that they feel extra special when completing the activity.

Dot markers (affiliate link) are another way to help children learn their letters, and you can pay attention to what your child likes, as it will help you tailor their learning as they grow.

I also have a different worksheet with the lowercase a because kids learn with repetition. Both sheets have other illustrations to spark curiosity in your kids.

Line Tracing Practice With Emphasis in Letter A

Line tracing worksheets are an excellent way to help develop your child’s fine motor skills.

It’s a good idea to have your little ones practice line tracing before they even get started with letter tracing.

The following line tracing worksheets emphasize the letter “A,” so you can expose your child to this letter in a fun way.

They get a bit more complicated as you scroll down, but they’re still entertaining and unique.

You can have the students use different colors on each line, and at the end, with supervision, have them cut through the dotted line.

Letter A Maze Worksheets

Mazes are a fantastic way to instill problem-solving and cognitive skills in your kids. They help children think outside the box, sharpen memory, and teach patience and dedication.

The following mazes are for children aged 5+. They are easy but also challenging, so your students will gain confidence as they practice.

The following maze is shaped in the form of an uppercase A.

See if your student can deduct that before you point it out!

If you want your child to practice writing while having fun with mazes, consider printing the following maze. It can serve as a prize once they finish working on their writing.

Kids, by nature, love mazes and labyrinths.

  • Help the astronaut get to the asteroids.

Explain to the child that astronauts don’t necessarily go to asteroids. However, the word asteroid starts with the letter “A.” You can plan a small science lesson about astronomy to teach your child more about space and the different objects that exist in the universe.

Read and Match Worksheets

Have the student color the pictures and match them with the right word.

If the child doesn’t know how to read, he may need your help. You can read the words to them and encourage them to repeat them after you. This can help them improve their vocabulary and language skills while enjoying the activity.

Cut and Glue or Memory Game

The following worksheets can be used in different ways.

I first designed them to have the child color, cut, and then glue the illustration on the right word.

Start with the number of sheets your child has the attention span for. Kids learn at every moment of the day, so it shouldn’t feel like a chore for them.

I Spy Worksheets for letter A

Make the most of your child’s time and learning by playing the fun ‘I Spy’ game.

Encourage them to color and count the different pictures that start with the letter ‘A’ and write the number at the bottom of the page.

Identify the Different Image Worksheets

I enjoy helping my children develop their cognitive skills by incorporating other subjects. This activity involves identifying which illustration is different from the rest.

If the student is struggling to identify the letter A, the following worksheet may help. The worksheet requires them to identify the different variations of the letter A.

Coloring Pages for Letter A

Coloring is an excellent tool for teaching children. The following worksheets are beautifully designed, and some of them include sections for practicing writing skills.

Tip: Ask the child if he can count the different types of ants.

It’s incredible how much you can teach your child from just one page.

For example, take the “A is for avocado” worksheet. You can teach your kids where avocados are grown the different types of avocados, and even make guacamole at the end to enjoy with some chips.

Learning doesn’t always happen at the table. Sometimes, snuggling up on the couch and having flashcards is good.

Print, laminate, and cut them to reinforce the letter wherever you go.

Color, Letter, and Number Recognition Worksheets

Teach your little ones numbers, color, and the letter A simultaneously. The beauty of teaching small children is that everything is interlaced, making things more enjoyable.

Letter A Printable

I made bunch of different Letter A Printable PDFs that are free for your personal (non-commercial) use. You can use them in your own home or in your classroom as a teacher. These would be great for a number of different uses especially with preschool or kindergarten students. They can be used for letter recognition, letter sounds, phonemic awareness, and letter writing.

I’ll run through all the different free letter A printables I have and then I’ll share the link to download at the end.

Letter A Printable Print

Letter a printable outlines, letter a dotted, letter a dotted with arrows, a is for apple, letter a tracing worksheets, get the letter a printable pdfs, more fun with letters.

If you are looking for a large print out of letter A in regular print then these are the printables for you! I have one with uppercase letter A, one with lowercase letter A, and one with both uppercase and lowercase A together. I have these all in a vertical orientation and a horizontal orientation.

These would be great if you want to do a coloring or decorating activity with a blank letter A or even a letter A craft. Again I have one with uppercase A, one with lowercase A, and one with both uppercase and lowercase A together. I have these all in a vertical orientation and a horizontal orientation. These are a fun way to do a bunch of different activities with letter A.

If you are looking for a large print out of letter A in a dotted lines or dashed style then these are the printables for you! I have one with uppercase A, one with lowercase A, and one with both uppercase and lowercase A together. I have these all in a vertical orientation and a horizontal orientation.

These would be a great visual reminder of letter formation for letter A. I have one with uppercase A, one with lowercase A, and one with both uppercase and lowercase A together. I have these all in a vertical orientation and a horizontal orientation as well. These bigger pages could be posted on a board or wall as a visual reminder of proper letter A formation.

There are 3 different ones of these. Two of them work on letter formation, tracing, and handwriting (one for capital A and one for lowercase A) and one of them is a coloring page. The coloring page could be great for fall when you talk about apple colors and letter A as well.

For even more handwriting practice I have tracing sheets for letter A as well. These printable worksheets are a great way to practice letter formation and fine motor skills. There is one for capital letter A and one for lowercase letter A. The one with arrows in particular can help students with stroke order.

You can have fun having kiddos trace over the letter with their fingers, change things up with the colors they use, do these activities with paint and paintbrushes, etc for a little bit of variety.

Be sure to do a print preview prior to printing to ensure that your printer settings are the way you want them to be. Sometimes I find that I need to adjust the scale of printing, etc. to make sure things print properly.

How to Print

Letter a printable worksheets, additional activities, terms of use.

  • Each printable fits a standard 8 ½ inch piece of paper

Designed with parents in mind. Each printable worksheet is done in black and white to help you save on ink!

On the first worksheet your child can color in the acorns using the key. A fun way to practice identifying uppercase A and lowercase a.

Young kids can use their finger to trace the dotted line on the worksheet then write over it using a crayon. Once done they can color in the image using their favorite art supplies. Coloring is a great way to practice fine motor skills!

A basic printable with the large outline of capital A and lowercase letter a. You can use this template for letter A themed craft projects where kids glue down items onto the letters.

Another fun option is to have your child draw different items that start with the letter a! Then you can discuss what they created.

On the next worksheet your child can practice drawing acorns to go along with the oak leaves. Then on the bottom of the page they can write their own uppercase and lowercase letter a's within the boxes.

Mazes are a fun activity for young kids. On this last printable, kids can help the squirrel find the collection of acorns. Then they can color in the image using crayons, markers, or colored pencils!

Time to work on letter A? We have a whole set of letter A worksheets as a part of our alphabet worksheets series to share with you.

Free Printable Letter A Worksheets - Alphabet Worksheets Series

Letter A Worksheets

There are 8 worksheets in this printable set, focusing on lots of different skills (handwriting).

On the first page students are asked to color in all the objects that begin with the letter A (angel, anchor, astronaut, apple).

The second worksheet has an upper and lowercase letter A to trace. To warm up kids can first trace two shapes, a triangle and a circle.

On the third page there is a bunch of letters. Students are asked to circle all the letters A.

Next we have a color by letter page, where students have to identify all the A’s (upper and lower case) and color them to reveal the hidden image.

Following the letter a to get through the maze. Kids are asked to draw a line from start to finish, following the letter A.

If you just need to work on handwriting, there are two pages to trace the letters (with space for kids to try on their own), one with an uppercase A and one with a lowercase A.

Last we have a “Color all the letters A” practice sheet, where students look at the sentences and color all the letters A in them.

Welcome to the alphabet! Finding activities for teaching the Letter A is one of the first steps towards learning the entire alphabet. When you are teaching your student anything, you will always want to engage the 5 senses so that the concept is really ingrained.

SO that means finding activities that include touch, sound, sight, hearing, and maybe even engaging the scent of an (A)pple pie 🙂

Since young ones are really into touching and feeling to learn the world around them, I'll include in this section some great hands-on activities and Letter A crafts for 2 year olds (and really for any age!) to learn.

As your child grows older, expand their activities and find ways to introduce letters by engaging more of their senses. In addition to songs and tactile activities that will teach the Letter A, you can get your kids up and MOVING to really learn!

A few ideas:

  • Letter A Scavenger Hunt - Give your child a bag with a list of pictures and words written on it that start with the Letter A. See how many items your child can collect!
  • Letter A Dancing! - While you are watching the Letter A songs and videos above (and below), dance it out! You can dance with your child while you both sing about the Letter A.
  • Letter A Relay - Grab a few items that start with the letter A (apple, acorn, airplane toy, etc.) and do a relay balancing these items back and forth across a room)

Combine all the senses together to solidify learning of the alphabet for Kindergarten students. You can play games, create works of art, sing songs, dance, write and draw the letter A and all the alphabet!

Here are some fun games to try:

Another idea: Let your child be the teacher! Grab a handy white erase board with magnetic alphabet letters. Stuffed animals can be the students, or maybe you can get in on the imaginative play, too!

So many to choose from!  You could:

Make an "A"lligator

Or a Spoon "A"nt 🙂  (You can do this from a cut out upside down egg carton too!)

Grab the 'ol crafting box and let your kid's imagination run wild with creating something that starts with the letter "A".

One more idea would be to grab a bunch of old throw-away magazines and have your child cut out all the letter "A's" he can find, plus anything that starts with the letter A. Then he can glue them all onto a construction sheet.

If you do this for every letter of the alphabet and collect them into a scrapbook or notebook, you could have a very cool "Alphabet Journal" to keep forever!

First, print out the letter pages on white paper or cardstock . Next, your child can color in the letter. Then, you’ll need some glue and some old magazines or catalogs. When your child is finished with each letter, you can staple the pages together or use paper fasteners to create a book. This will be something they can look at again and again to reinforce what they’ve learned.

Alphabet Tracing Worksheets

These alphabet tracing worksheets are another good way to help your preschooler learn the alphabet. Not only can they help children learn their letters, but tracing helps little ones with their fine motor skills as they trace the upper and lower-case letters from A to Z. 

It’s a smart idea to laminate these tracing pages so that they can be used over and over again. Just have your child use a fine-tip wet-erase marker to write with, and these will hold up for for quite awhile. These markers should work well, and here is an inexpensive lamintor we like.

How you use these alphabet collage and alphabet tracing printables is up to you, but you might want to focus on one letter at a time, using both the collage page and the tracing page for each letter before moving on to the next.
