Mba internships: 10 common questions answered.

gesturing man

MBA internships give you the opportunity to work for some of the world’s top firms, gain experience in a new industry, and put the learning and skills you’ve gained from your MBA into practice.

If you perform well during an MBA internship, you could end up with a full-time job. At  Bain & Company , around 90 percent of MBA interns get offered jobs at the firm.

So how do you go about landing the best MBA internships? Which major companies run MBA internship programs? And what impact can doing an MBA internship have on your career?

Where to find MBA internships

Major job searching sites such as LinkedIn  or Indeed have hundreds of MBA internships available now across the country.

Additionally there are some more niche job search sites to find MBA internships such as Way Up  and Chegg Internships .

Many Fortune 500 companies have long-standing MBA internship programs that often funnel into post-grad development and leadership programs or full-time jobs, including:

  • Amazon
  • Goldman Sachs
  • Target
  • Boston Scientific
  • Procter & Gamble
  • Intuit
  • Salesforce

Here are 10 common questions about MBA internships, answered:

1. when do mba internships take place.

Internships usually take place during the summer between the first and second years of a full-time MBA program, although this can vary at certain schools. If you are studying a one-year or part-time MBA, your internship opportunity may be towards the end of your degree.

2. How long do MBA internships last?

Summer MBA internships are usually 10-12 weeks long for full-time MBAs, while part-time internships can be anywhere up to a year, depending on how many hours you put in each week.

The length also varies depending on the company. Consulting or finance firms will likely have established internship structures which you will have to follow, while smaller companies may be more flexible and tailor an internship to you.

3. Who hires MBA interns?

Top recruiters of MBA graduates are in tech, consulting, and finance, and the same is true for internships.  Top 10 MBA employers  like Amazon, Bain, and Deloitte, all have established MBA internship programs that run each year.

Big three consultancy McKinsey took on  1,000 interns  between March and December 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic. GMAC’s  Corporate Recruiter Survey  also found that 87 percent of employers still plan to hire interns in 2021.

Sophie Reiser used her summer MBA internship at EY to  secure a permanent job offer  once she completed her MBA at  Emory University’s Goizueta Business School .

“My internship with EY was an extension of my MBA, where I could not only learn quickly, but also apply what I’d already learned on the program,” she says.

Smaller companies and startups also recruit MBA interns, though application processes vary.

4. What can you expect from an MBA internship?

The type of work you will do during an MBA internship varies across industry and function.

Consultants work in teams on client problems, while finance interns may work on financial modelling. Whatever your project, networking within the organization and getting to know it holistically is a major advantage of an internship.

Alex Fein took an  internship at The Hershey Company  during his MBA at  Temple University’s Fox School of Business . He worked with multiple teams across the business, spending the first half working in brand management before pivoting to brand strategy later on.

“I learned how to collaborate cross-functionally with consumer insights, finance, and internal sales teams,” he says, “I found out I’m resilient, work well under pressure and work well in a team.”

5. Is an MBA internship graded?

Business schools sometimes award academic credit for completing an internship, and you should check with your school to see if this is the case for you.

Being awarded credit often means your performance will be evaluated by your internship mentor, who will report back to the school. You may also be asked to write a report reflecting on what you learned during your experience and how you think you performed.

Some programs, like the full-time MBAs at  Imperial College Business School  in the UK and  Melbourne Business School  in Australia, include a credit-bearing internship as part of the MBA curriculum, requiring you to complete the internship during term time.

6. How much do MBA interns get paid?

Most, but not all, MBA internships will pay you a salary. Like your  post-MBA salary , these vary depending on industry and location.

MBA interns  from  Harvard Business School  earned US$13,500 per month on average in 2021 working for consulting firms. Financial services interns earned just under US$10,000, while those in tech earned US$7,800.

7. How can an MBA internship boost your career prospects?

An MBA internship gives you the chance to build with the expertise and connections that will make you more employable come graduation.

At Melbourne Business School, where students are required to take up to 12 weeks of internships during the program,  95 percent of students  are employed within three months of graduation.

Athena School of Management  in India sees similar success for its MBA, which requires students to undertake three internships during the two-year program. Almost  100 percent of students  land jobs within three months of graduating and around half secure roles from their internships.

Athena director, Aditya Singh, believes it is the internships that make a difference to employers. “They want people with practical experience,” he says.

8. When should you start applying?

With most internships happening during the summer, you should start looking for opportunities as soon as you enroll in your MBA.

While many companies begin recruiting in January, some begin hiring interns from the moment they arrive on campus, so the earlier you apply, the better.

9. How do you apply for an MBA internship?

Look for internship opportunities at careers fairs, recruiting events, and via job postings on your school’s careers center website.

Consulting firms typically begin recruiting on campus in January or February each year, starting with information sessions and company presentations, before moving onto resume and cover letter screening and, eventually, interviews.

Amazon works to a similar timeline, while Google host events at schools before opening applications in October and interviewing until March.

Careers websites and LinkedIn are also useful resources. If you’re interested in applying for a niche startup, send over an email expressing your interest.

10. How do you make the right choice?

Go for an MBA internship that gives you a diverse and in-depth experience. Don’t just look at the salary on offer. You should research how people have found the experience before and what kind of work MBA interns get involved with.

Remember, your MBA internship is your chance to try out an industry and see if it’s the right fit for you. You’ll get a taste of what life will be like once you graduate and you’ll get the experience you need to take the next step in your career.

How to create a killer MBA internship presentation

Tom Tran

🙌 🥳 Congrats on landing the Internship! What now?

Congrats! You’re an MBA intern at your dream company. You worked hard to get into an MBA program. You worked hard to recruit, network, and interview. Now comes the next step, how do you convert that summer internship into a full-time job offer? It all comes down to your (1) final project presentation, (2) the quality of the work you did during the summer, and (3) the relationships you made with the people you met and collaborated with along the way. And when I say presentation, I mean both the PowerPoint slide deck as the “deliverable” and an actual on-stage-in-front-of-a-live-audience presentation.

Not that long ago, I was a marketing MBA intern at Dell Technologies in Austin. This was one of the best summers of my life. Dell put me in corporate housing just a short drive away from downtown Austin. I had an amazing manager, Chris, who really cared about helping me succeed during my internship. And I feel in love with the city of Austin. There was always something to do and always something going on. Whether it was going out for BBQ, or tubing down the river on the weekend, or meeting up with other Michigan alumni at Happy Hour. Read to the end and I’ll share a deck that I sent to my section 4 classmates about my internship experience in Austin.

mba internship project

My number one goal that summer was to make sure that I delivered something that was impactful so that I could get the return offer. I got a lot of great advice from other Michigan alums. I discovered some strategies that worked for me and I was able to secure an offer to return full time. Here’s my best advice for current MBA interns who want to secure their own full-time offer.

📚✍️ Show your work early and often

This is the most important thing you can do because it invites other people to become co-creators and co-collaborators. By showing your work early and often to the right people in the org, you invite them into your creation process and because they have a chance to influence it, they will be engaged and feel as if they are part of your project. When you present your final project at the end of the summer, these folks will be your biggest cheerleaders.

As soon as you possibly can, start putting your ideas and analysis down on paper. And by paper I mean slides. It doesn’t have to be pretty. Actually, it’s better if it isn’t. What matters is that you have something you can start showing other coworkers and getting their feedback and input on. Instead of going into a 1:1 with a list of get-to-know-each-other questions, also come with a few hypothesis/ideas you want to validate or talk through. The people you will be meeting will know so much more than you so their feedback is incredibly valuable. When your slides are ugly, they will also be more open to giving you constructive feedback since it will be clear that it’s still a work in progress.

A benefit to showing your work early and asking for feedback is that it is flattering to the people you are requesting feedback from. You’ll find that most people will want to help you be successful in your project. When I was on the other side of the table as an peer buddy to summer MBA interns, I absolutely LOVED seeing what my assigned buddy was working on and giving him ideas on how to take his project to the next level.

A mistake that I’ve seen MBA interns make is keeping their work to themselves until close to the midpoint check in or until the final presentation. They want to keep their presentation under wraps and save it for the big reveal. Big mistake. Often what happens with this approach is that there are fewer opportunities for iteration and revision. What also tends to happen with this approach is that it also encourages procrastination. There are always more ways to slice the data. There’s always more industry research that can be done. All of a sudden, the mid-point check in is a few days away and there’s still an entire deck that needs to be built!

When I was at Dell, my summer project was incredibly ambiguous. Something along the lines of “improve the customer journey.” But within the first few weeks as I started to get a better idea of the business challenge, I started to put my ideas onto slides that I would show everyone from my director to the analytics team, to the marketing team working on a totally different, but related, product. Instead of just talking, I had something to show during meetings. This helped me quickly scope out my project, get access to the right data, tests hypothesis, and iterate.

🏋️‍♀️💪 Get your slide building reps in

If you’re new to corporate America, welcome. PowerPoint is the tool of choice. Slides are the language of business. You need to learn how to build good slides and the best way to learn is by doing. Early on, ask for examples of the best decks whether it’s from an internship project last year or a really well received recent presentation. Learn what’s expected. Then figure out how you can elevate it.

As you start to get into the data and start forming your hypothesis, start documenting the work in PowerPoint. Write down the methodology, the approach, the insights, etc. When you’re reading other decks, copy and paste slides that you want to repurpose or that you find inspiring. The more slides you make, the easier they will become. Even if some of the slides you made early on don’t make it into the final presentation, you can still include them in an “appendix” section. This is where you can show the work you did over the course of the summer. Since there’s no limit to an appendix, you can put in as many slides as you want in this section. Since the PowerPoint file will be your main “deliverable,” you will want to get credit for the work you did.

Of course, your job isn’t just to build great slides. You want to make a positive impact on the business. You want to uncover unique insights and propose recommendations that can drive measurable dollar impact. The funny thing is that to do this well, you have to persuade the right stakeholders in the org. To do that, you need to have bulletproof logic, excellent analysis, and clear recommendations—all this is usually captured in a slide deck and talked about in a meeting. The deck is where everything comes together.

The services group at Dell Technologies had this guideline for final MBA presentations. The body of the deck had to be only THREE(!) slides. An entire summer’s worth of work simplified into three slides. Four slides if you include the cover page. However, unlimited number of “back up” slides (Dell’s terminology for appendix slides). Simplifying down to three slides was hard because it forced me to make difficult tradeoffs. I could show anything I wanted to, but not everything I wanted to.

Over the course of the summer, I would estimate that I built well over two hundred slides. I re-wrote a few slides a dozen times. As I got feedback, I would revise and redesign to ensure that I was making a clear point. As my project scope evolved, some of the original slides became less relevant and were eventually cut even from the back up section. If you haven’t done this before, you might be thinking that quality matters more than quantity. I’d argue that quantity matters more than quality. What happens when you create this quantity of slides is that through these “reps” your slides will get better. The headlines will become more crisp and make more persuasive points. Your slide design will improve help you communicate more clearly. You stop becoming just a consumer of ideas and start become a producer. The real value you can create is is when you start synthesizing and producing real insights and making actionable reccomendations.

💡🤩 Find inspiration outside of your function/company/industry

One of the great things about being an MBA intern is that you haven’t been at the company long enough to know what the can and can’t be done. You may be working with folks who have been with the company for a long time and are used to seeing things done a certain way. It is very valuable to learn from these coworkers, but you can also add value by bringing in some fresh, new thinking. You can suggest new ideas that may have never been considered. Of course, it’s about finding the right balance. Pitching a TikTok campaign for at an Oil & Gas industrials manufacturer could get you points for novelty even though they might not buy it. But, given the rate of TikTok growth…. Maybe it’s not a horrible idea.

When you’re working on your summer project, think about different ways you can approach the problem. Is there an analogous situation from a different industry or from a different country that could be instructive? You may be on the marketing team, but how would the finance team approach the same problem?

Even if you’re in a sprint to that mid-point presentation/check-in, it could help to take half a day off and hit the local museum or brewery for a change of scenery. You don’t know where inspiration will strike. You’re also probably interning in a new city and so part of your internship is to really figure out if this is somewhere you could see yourself living for a few years.  Sometimes, you have to get away and be in a more relaxed state in order to have those lightbulb moments.

A few months ago, I had this A-HA moment right in the middle of a CrossFit workout and developed an analogy that perfectly captures a really, really complicated marketing attribution paradox. I put it into a slide immediately and shared it; my director still talks about it and refers to it today many, many weeks later.

One practical tip for finding inspiration that can be directly applied to your slide deck. Pick up a magazine, take pictures of outdoor billboards, or screenshot any new iPhone app you’re using. Pay attention to the color, typeface, white space, imagery, angles, type treatment, etc. Steal any elements you like and copy it on to your slide. Saw a great billboard that had great use of white space and typography? See how your slide would look if you tried to apply similar white space and typography.

If you follow the tips I've given, the odds for getting a return offer will be in your favor. You'll have shown the team that you're a collaborator, creator, and creative. Asking people for advice and working their feedback into your project will show that you can collaborate and are open to feedback. Pushing yourself to switch from being a "consumer" (you will be innundated with new data sources and general resources) to a "producer" of actionable insights wil show that you are able to create value for the team. You will be perceived as being creative by bringing solutions from another industry/function into your role. Creativity is about mixing and matching. Combining old things into new things. It's easier than it sounds.

Good luck! You got this! If there's any other great MBA internship advice you've seen or have, please share it!

And as promised, here is my summer internship update I shared. During the summer, every week two or three classmates from my section would send out an email update on what they were doing. When it was my turn, this is what I shared:

Interning with Nike - Digital Product Manager Intern

What did you do at your internship?

I created a long-term strategy for providing a differentiated experience to Nike members through Nike.com. During my internship, I gained buy-in from stakeholders across Nike’s geographies, developed a product roadmap, and created prototypes of my recommendations.

What did you enjoy the most?

As someone relatively new to product management, I loved learning about Nike’s strategy to reach more members through digital channels. Similarly, I loved knowing that my internship project would play an integral role in helping Nike achieve its strategic objectives.

What tips would you give to someone else wanting to intern in this industry?

Companies like Nike have mastered the art of storytelling. When you interact with these companies, you need to have a clear vision of what your story is and why working at the intersection of apparel and tech aligns with your story.

Interning with Dell Technologies - MBA Intern - Sustainability & Packaging Engineering

What did you do at your internship?

My internship focused on developing a roadmap to scale a novel sustainable technology called Pollution Ink within the Dell supply chain. Pollution Ink utilizes soot generated from fossil fuel exhaust as a pigment for ink, which is then used to print Dell boxes in manufacturing facilities. Additionally, I was tasked with creating a process to drive sustainable innovation within the company with a particular focus on establishing early alignment between different teams to facilitate scale.

What did you enjoy the most?

The best part of this experience was coordinating Pollution Ink pilots in Dell's manufacturing facilities around the globe. This gave me the opportunity to engage with suppliers and team members from different regions and support the formulation process of the ink. We were also able to print a Michigan logo in a box and keep it as a souvenir!

How did Ross alumni support you?

Throughout my internship, the Dell Ross alumni network organized several events that enabled me to meet with Rossers across the company. From one of the connections I developed, I was actually introduced to my current manager. In a very tangible way, Ross alumni greatly facilitated my ability to navigate the vast network of such a large organization.

Interning with Sanofi Ventures - MBA Summer Associate

My main responsibility at Sanofi Ventures during my summer internship was to source, conduct diligence work, and evaluate early-stage biotechnology companies for potential venture capital investment. Over the 10-week internship, I was able to evaluate 43 non-confidential pitch presentations, I co-led a seven-week deep diligence on a T-cell therapy company, and I investigated corporate venture capital investment effects on early-stage biotech companies vs. investment from our institutional VC counterparts. Moreover, I was also given the opportunity to assist two portfolio companies (companies in which we have already made an investment) in raising their next round of financing.

There were many things that I liked about working with the Sanofi Ventures team, but the two I would like to highlight are the people and the internship’s proximity to innovative and cutting-edge scientific technologies. Sanofi Ventures was a small seven-person team and each team member was extremely knowledgeable, experienced, but most importantly, they were inclusive and willing to educate me about the intricacies of the biotech venture capital world.

How did Ross prepare you for your internship?

The Ross academic curriculum, Ross-sponsored extracurricular activities, and the numerous opportunities to get involved in the Ann Arbor biotechnology community prepared me to make a valuable contribution to the Sanofi Ventures team during my summer internship. The two courses that prepared me the most for my internship were Professor David Brophy’s FIN629: Financing Research Commercialization and being a member of the student-led Zell Lurie Commercialization Fund . These two courses gave me experiential opportunities to apply my academic learnings to real-world business cases as both an entrepreneur and investor. ZLCF gave me repetitions evaluating investment opportunities from an array of business sectors, including technology, mobility, consumer goods, and healthcare.

Interning with LinkedIn Learning - Product Marketing Intern

I was a product marketing intern, working on LinkedIn Learning, which is LinkedIn's subscription e-learning platform. My team's focus was engaging and retaining learners, and I worked on three inbound marketing research projects spanning multiple stages of the product development lifecycle: One was built from a hypothesis, one was a recommendation on how to implement a new feature, and the last was recommendations to improve an existing product function.

Why did you want to intern at this company/ role?

LinkedIn's mission resonates philosophically with me — its vision is to "Create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce." I believe that technology professionals have a responsibility to build equitable products (by design, access, and more), and I was impressed to observe that LinkedIn has operationalized on its vision across every single business unit.

I love LinkedIn Learning's "Yes, and..." culture. It is an environment that takes advantage of the diverse backgrounds of its team through empowering every team member to share their perspective (even interns like me!). I noticed that a lot of elements I love about Ross culture are also prevalent at LinkedIn, such as collaboration, inclusivity, and community.

Interning with Tesla - Global Supply Management Intern - Indirect Purchasing

I was a global supply management intern at the Indirect Purchasing team at Tesla. I was part of the team responsible for contracting all materials/tools/services that help build the car, but do not end up in it. Within the team, I was assigned to the temporary labor "commodity," especially critical for the business during post-COVID times to help ramp back up production.

I enjoyed working in a company that is revolutionizing a few different industries, because that comes with inspiring leadership that always questions the status quo of all aspects of the work being done. On top of being encouraged to challenge the way things are done, I was amazed by the extent to which the ownership allowed an intern, considering the importance and spend of the category.

How did Ross alumni support you?

Every single Ross alum I tried to talk to when recruiting was nice enough to concede me at least half an hour of their time. They can't resist the nostalgic "Go Blue!" they heard so many times during school. An alum at Tesla connected me to other teammates who were hiring interns and after three interviews, I was able to land the opportunity.

Interning with Visa - MBA Finance Intern

What did you do at your internship?

I worked on the Product FP&A team. My main projects this summer were to support the five-year strategic planning of two payment technology products: Wearables and Visa Transaction Control. Working with the product team, I verified their assumptions, processed data from external and internal resources for the financial model, and did an independent study on possible COVID impact.

I really enjoyed the training provided by the Visa HR group and the finance group throughout my entire internship. Every week, the interns had two or three virtual sessions with the executive leadership and two or three networking sessions with VPs from many different finance teams. (Finance is a massive and complex function at Visa.) The opportunities to speak with the leaders inside and outside of finance deepened my understanding of the business and gave me a better idea of what I want to pursue in my career.

MAP was great practice for working remotely and working cross-functionally. Additionally, classes such as accounting, econ, etc. provided me with the basic knowledge and technical skills needed to work in finance, as I had no relevant experience previously.

Interning with Microsoft - Product Marketing Consultant

How did you get your internship?

This summer, I was part of the Ross Business Consultant Corps Program with Microsoft. The program was created to provide rising MBA2s with a summer action-based learning experience that would help them build professional skills and provide assistance to organizations that were/are facing new opportunities as a result of the global health crisis.

During my internship, I developed a go-to-market strategy for a new product in development within Microsoft's Supply Chain organization. In addition, I helped to build a model to determine the economic and environmental benefits of this product/solution to potential customers.

Before COVID hit, I was recruiting for product marketing roles in the tech industry and was especially interested in the intersection of technology and social impact. For this reason, I enjoyed working on a project that was a direct response to the events happening in the world and showed the positive impacts (economic, social, and environmental) that a large tech company could have on society by using their business for good.

Interning with Clif Bar & Company, Clif Kid Brand Management Intern

I did the vast majority of my internship search off-campus, and reached out to as many Ross alums at the companies I was targeting as possible (in addition to many, many cold Linkedin requests). I was able to connect with a former Erber at Clif who helped put in a good word and prepare me for my interview. She also connected me with another Rosser who was designated as my buddy for the summer and proved to be an incredible advocate and advisor during my summer. It never ceases to amaze me how strong the Michigan network is and how generous alums are with their time!

Off-campus recruiting can be intimidating but also tends to yield some of the most exciting internships for folks with a specific industry in mind. I went through the process of CPG recruiting with my FACT group peers but procrastinated with actually taking the leap to reach out in search of off-campus opportunities. Don't be like me! There were many off-campus opportunities that actually had similar timelines to on-campus roles that I almost missed because I assumed they would mostly be just-in-time.

As part of the Clif Kid team, I was tasked with understanding who adults buying Zbar (a product for kids) were and how Clif could drive growth within this segment. I used internal panel data (information on demographics, psychographics, shopping behavior, and more), quantitative findings via a survey I created, and qualitative findings through a series of focus groups to learn about this group of consumers. Based on this, I was able to make a recommendation for a new product innovation positioned to better meet the needs of these consumers and help Clif attack a new market segment. I also worked on a group project with the other grad interns looking at how Clif could enter the gamer segment (something I was very unfamiliar with!).

Interning with Hulu - Product Management MBA Intern

This summer, I worked as a product management MBA Intern on Hulu’s Platform Services Product team. Our team’s customers were internal Hulu developers, and our products were the platforms and tools that developers use. I focused on the challenge of integrating customer feedback into the product development process in continuous, formative, scalable ways. Over the course of two months, I was able to interview 30+ users, synthesize data into a prioritized product roadmap, build and ship the MVP, and present findings to a variety of company stakeholders. As a result, our team can now bring a more data-driven, customer-centric approach to product development, and I am more skilled as a product manager!

One of my favorite aspects of the internship was meeting other Hulugans, talking to them about their career trajectories, and refining my own goals. I also participated in Hulu’s annual Hackathon, which allowed me to apply product management and leadership skills in an incredibly scrappy environment. Over four days, we defined and scoped a problem, built a product roadmap, prototyped features, developed a working MVP, and pitched it to the full Hulu Technology organization.

Ross and Michigan alumni were incredibly generous with their time when I was interviewing for this role. Before my final interview with Hulu, I had informational conversations with several Ross alumni and one current student who had previously worked at Hulu. These conversations equipped me with a more nuanced understanding of Hulu’s culture, the company’s strategic direction, and what product management looks like at Hulu. As a result, I was able to enter the interview process prepared and confident. Go Blue!

Interning with Detroit Venture Partners and Bloomscape - MBA Venture Capital Intern

This summer I worked as a MBA venture capital intern at Detroit Venture Partners. Through DVP I was matched with Bloomscape, a direct-to-consumer online plant shopping platform. At Bloomscape, I worked closely with the director of growth marketing as well as with the firm’s business development lead. I was given a ton of autonomy and ownership, which has translated to an incredible experience. I led the strategy around the launch of a new product category, worked on new performance marketing channels, and created a three-year customer journey map.

A Ross alum, who I built a relationship with through the 2020 Michigan Business Challenge, actually suggested I apply to the DVP Fellowship Program. Not only did she suggest that I apply, but she was also kind enough to write a referral for me. Prior to my conversation with her, I'd planned on working on my startup during the summer. She saw something in me and provided an opportunity that I was unaware of. The opportunity turned out to be one of the best professional experiences in my life. The internship experience alone due to the connections and learnings has already made my decision to attend business school worth it.

Why did you want to intern at this company or in this role?

I wanted to intern at Detroit Venture Partners because as a founder I knew it was imperative that I learn the ins and outs of venture capital and I knew it was equally important to build relationships in the industry. This summer, I wanted to grow both as an entrepreneur and an investor. I was able to achieve that through this internship. Many of the skills I have learned this summer at Bloomscape and DVP will be directly transferable to my start-up.

Interning with Federal Reserve Board of Governors - Graduate Intern

I worked with the financial market infrastructures risk and policy team, where I researched design elements of central bank digital currency (CBDC). Our work on CBDC was recently announced by Governor Lael Brainard . I also analyzed the impact of regulatory changes on the risk management of systemically important financial institutions – the “too big to fail” firms that underlie derivatives and securities transactions.

Our MAP was fantastic preparation in properly scoping a project and hitting deadlines while operating entirely virtually. I also appreciated the negotiation lessons from our management and organizations class, which came in handy when I wanted to ensure my project could utilize a racial equity lens. Being prepared to discuss my interest led my supervisors to connect me to the division’s diversity and inclusion committee, who partnered with me for a presentation on racial equity in policy making.

A mentor is absolutely necessary to navigating a complex institution like the Fed. I was lucky enough to be given mine as part of the internship structure, and they were an invaluable resource. The other major takeaway for me was the importance of being able to build frameworks for the analysis of novel problems. Ross teaches many useful frameworks, but it is just as important to be able to establish new ones that clarify policy choices for decision-makers.

Interning at Henry Health - Chief of Staff Intern

My primary responsibilities were to support our CEO in fundraising by updating pitch decks, responding to due diligence requests, and updating legal and financial documents related to fundraising. I also completed a variety of other projects, such as leading the team in a strategic discussion, and owned a number of operational responsibilities, including updating our financial model and budget.

The chief operating officer left the company about a week before I started. As a result, I had to take on many of her responsibilities, including things like creating P&L statements, helping to close the books for our accountants every month, and even having HR-related conversations with the CEO and other employees. The knowledge I gained from our core classes, combined with my experience in MAP, was crucial in taking on these tasks.

Why did you want to intern at this company or in this role?

I knew coming into Ross that I wanted to transition to a company in healthcare that was serving a population that our healthcare system had been otherwise failing. Henry Health is tackling an important, and often unaddressed, problem in focusing on Black people's mental health. Of all the missions of the companies I was interested in, Henry Health's felt to me like the most focused on serving a specific community marginalized by the U.S. healthcare system.
