Mass Effect 2: How To Complete Thane's Loyalty Mission

Here's everything you need to know about completing Sins of the Father, Thane's loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2.

Thane's loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2 , Sins of the Father , sees the retired drell assassin coming to terms with mistakes he made in the past in an attempt to reconnect with his estranged son, Kolyat .

In order to gain Thane's loyalty and make sure he survives the suicide mission , you'll need to head to the Citadel and prevent Kolyat from following in his father's footsteps. This is one of Mass Effect 2's more unique loyalty missions in that you can complete it without firing a single bullet - the only other quest like this is Samara's loyalty mission, which we recently discussed with the writer behind it .

If you want to make Thane loyal and ensure he appears in Mass Effect 3, look no further than this comprehensive Mass Effect 2 Thane loyalty mission guide , which includes details on how to start Thane's loyalty mission , where to find Mouse , what to say to Kelham, and how to stop Kolyat from shooting his target.

How To Start Thane's Loyalty Mission In Mass Effect 2

thane loyalty mission mass effect 2

Thane's loyalty mission will automatically be unlocked several missions after you acquire him as a squadmate. After a while, Kelly Chambers will inform you that Thane wants to speak to you in life support on deck three of the Normandy.

When you go to speak to Thane, he will tell you that his son, Kolyat, has taken a job as a hit man. Your task is to intercept Kolyat before he reaches his target in order to ensure he doesn't follow in his father's footsteps and become an assassin. Like all of the other loyalty missions in Mass Effect 2, this should ideally be completed before embarking on the acquire Reaper IFF quest, which sets the endgame scenario in motion. If you want to make sure everyone gets out of the Collector base alive during the suicide mission, you need to complete Thane's loyalty mission - and everyone else's except Legion's - before moving to acquire the Reaper IFF. Up until that point there will be no penalty for doing additional side quests.

How To Complete Thane's Loyalty Mission In Mass Effect 2

thane loyalty mission mass effect 2

The first thing you need to do as part of Thane's mission is go to the Citadel. Like Garrus' loyalty mission , you will need to speak to Captain Bailey in C-Sec headquarters, which is located right next to the docking bay after going through customs. If you inquire about Thane's son, Bailey will direct you to Mouse, a "duct rat" who can be found outside the Dark Star Lounge. This is easily located if you look at your Citadel minimap, although it's important to note that Mouse isn't actually in the bar - he's to the right of the entrance.

Mouse recognizes Thane, but is afraid to divulge any information about who hired Kolyat. Having high Paragon or Renegade will give you unique dialogue options that you can use to make him open up - otherwise, you need to either use a Renegade interrupt or pay him off. Eventually, he will tell you that a criminal called Elias Kelham hired Kolyat to take out a political opponent. Head back to Bailey in C-Sec and he will call Kelham in for questioning, although you only have a certain amount of time given that he and Kelham have a deal.

There are multiple ways to extract information from Kelham, although the easiest ones for Renegade or Paragon Shepards are to use three Renegade interrupts in a row or choose all of the Paragon conversation checks before telling him that you're a Spectre after his lawyer shows up, respectively. You can also rat out Mouse, but that takes a particularly unempathetic Renegade Shep.

Regardless of your method, Kelham will tell you that Kolyat has been tasked with assassinating Joram Talid, a turian politician who is attempting to disband organized crime rings. At this point you will automatically be transported to the 800 blocks and be tasked with trailing Talid while Thane keeps an eye out for Kolyat.

thane me2 loyalty mission

This part of the quest is pretty easy. Essentially, all you need to do is walk along the upper pathways of the Citadel while keeping watch of Talid below. Every so often, Thane will ask for a report, meaning you'll need to be near enough to Talid to click the prompt. As a result, it's best to walk at his pace and stop when he stops. After you go through a door, be sure to immediately look down to see whether Talid continues walking straight or turns in somewhere. If you lose Talid, Kolyat will kill him and you will fail the mission, meaning Thane will die on the suicide mission.

Eventually, if you successfully manage to tail him, Talid will meet with a pair of krogan mercs. The next door you go through will trigger a cutscene where a young stock boy attempts to get rid of you. You can get past him with either high Paragon, high Renegade, or a Renegade interrupt. Once you move through the next door, the scene will skip to Kolyat following Talid into the latter's apartment. You and Thane will chase him inside, at which point Bailey will arrive with other C-Sec officers to arrest Kolyat.

You can stop Kolyat by using a Paragon interrupt to scare him, wounding him so he can't kill Talid, or using a Renegade interrupt to kill Talid yourself. Regardless, you will be transported back to C-Sec, where Bailey is trying to decide what to do with him. Although he knows he's a good kid, he did technically try to murder someone. High Paragon will allow you to convince Bailey to let him off with community service, while high Renegade will give you the option to suggest Bailey take him on as a private contractor for C-Sec - off the books, of course. If you're neutral, Kolyat will get jail time. Regardless of which decision you make, you will earn Thane's loyalty and he will survive the suicide mission provided you don't assign him a task he is not suited for.

Mass Effect 2: How To Complete Thane's Loyalty Mission

Loyalty missions are a vital aspect of Mass Effect 2. Here's a guide to completing Thane's.

In Mass Effect 2   during Thane's Loyalty Mission, Shepard helps Thane track down his son, Kolyat. Captain Bailey has some intel on a petty criminal that may be able to help them. As players will see, the story of the so called "duct rats" gets dark pretty quickly.

RELATED:  Mass Effect: Best Jack Moments in the Series

Apparently, bodies of children are being pulled out of the Citadel ventilation ducts all of the time. This is probably the last thing that Thane needs to hear as he searches for the whereabouts of his son. Players can follow the steps in this guide to follow the trail of clues and locate Thane's son in the Citadel.

A Mouse Too Big For His Cage

Mouse Mass Effect 2

Mouse is the petty criminal that the Captain believes will have some information. Once the Captain is done explaining the socio-economic issues of the Citadel, Shepard and Thane can question Mouse. Gamers can find him outside of the Dark Star, on the upper level of the market, using a public comms terminal. Players should look out for the rotating neon martini, which is just across from where Mouse will be standing.

RELATED:  Mass Effect Art Imagines Alien Companions As Human Characters

As it turns out, Mouse and other duct dwellers were contacts for Thane years ago. Mouse knows who the target is, and players can choose a few different options to extract the information. Renegades can use force to get him to fess up, but offering protection or bribing are viable as well. Mid-way through the conversation, the Renegade icon will pop up for those that wish to beat the information out of him. No matter what method is used, Mouse will reveal that Elias Kelham is the mastermind behind the hit . Gamers can then head back to Bailey to discuss.

Crooked Cop, Good Cop, Bad Cop

Mass-Effect-2-Thane-Life-Support-on-Normandy

Captain Bailey will admit to taking bribes and ignoring Kelham's illegal practices. Still, he offers to bring Kelham in for questioning. The following events serve as an example of why Mass Effect dialogue is so well-renowned. Players can decide if they want to be the good cop or the bad cop while interrogating Kelham, and the developers did a great job recreating the classic police interrogation scene for this moment.

RELATED:  Mass Effect 4: Top Fan Theories We Hope Are True

Kelham will try to bait Shepard into hitting him, and gamers can oblige if they want. There is a second opportunity to use force right before the lawyer arrives. However, it will not matter in the end. Shepard is a Spectre, and therefore outside of the confines of Citadel law. Eventually, Kelham reveals that the target is Joram Talid . Shepard will need to reach him before Kolyat has the chance to execute the hit.

The Racist Humanitarian

Mass Effect 2 Talid

As if the mission did not have enough twists already, players will find out that Talid is an anti-human crime fighter . Thane will ask Shepard to track him while he speaks with voters. All that players have to do during this step is follow Talid on the upper level, where he will move from room to room across the mall.

At this point in the quest, gamers can fail the mission by losing track of Talid . However, it will thankfully be very difficult to lose him, as Talid moves at a snail's pace. The game will also give players a warning if Talid gets too far away. Make sure to be aware during this stage, or the story will change, as explained below.

Saved By The Assassin

After listening to Thane ask "What's he doing?" a hundred times, Talid will walk through the bar and Shepard will run into one of the duct rats. This will initiate the final cut scene of the mission. During the scene, Shepard will have a chance to gain Paragon rep by shooting the lamp near Kolyat and subduing him. Following a heartfelt reunion, Bailey, Shepard, and Thane will regroup at the precinct. Gamers will want to convince Bailey to keep the attempted murder off the books using the dialogue below:

  • Those guys were criminals.

What Happens If Shepard Fails The Mission

Thane Loyalty Mass Effect 2

If players are negligent or fail to follow Talid on purpose, the ending of the mission will play out in a completely different way. Kolyat will gun down Talid and his bodyguard before Shepard and Thane can stop him. After brutally murdering two innocent people, Kolyat will flee the Citadel. In the words of Thane, "Entropy always wins."

Later in the game, Shepard can speak with Thane about his son. Thane will be visibly distraught during the conversation. The consequences of failure also include the fact that Thane will not be loyal to Shepard , and his special attack will not be available. While Thane is not crucial during the final missions in the main story, it is still nice to have him around. Failing the mission will also have implications in Mass Effect 3 when Thane is on his deathbed.

mass effect thane mission

For Thane’s loyalty mission, you will need to help the talented assassin to stop his son from making the same mistakes in life that he did. The mission takes place upon the Citadel, so travel there after speaking with Thane and getting the mission.

Upon arrival, head for the C-Sec Offices beside the docking area and speak with Captain Bailey. Ask about Thane’s son and Bailey will tell you where to go. Make your way to Zakera Ward Level 28 and then go to the Comm Terminal area. Here you will find Mouse, who will tell you what you need to do. After that, go back to Captain Bailey who will organize an interrogation of Elias Kelham.

At this point you will need to decide if you are the good cop or the bad cop. You should pick the one that suits your morality on the play through, so Paragons should be good cops, and Renegades should be bad cops. This will lead you to the information you need, and the next portion of the mission.

For the next section you will need to follow a target , keeping them in sight and updating Thane on their position. If you lose sight of the person, this will count as a failure, and Thane will not become loyal. There is nothing wrong with a little bit of save-scumming to get through this part.

Just follow the Turian, updating Thane on his position every chance you get. Just keep following the Turian until you come to a moment where you need to use either a Renegade or Paragon action to stop Thane’s son from killing him. This is another point where you can fail the mission overall, and lose Thane’s loyalty.

Thane: Sins of the Father  is a Loyalty Mission   in Mass Effect 2 . Thane: Sins of the Father  is about Thane's son, Kolyat Krios . He has taken a contract as a hitman, and Thane needs to stop him to prevent him from making the same mistakes he did. Loyalty Missions  grant various benefits in  Mass Effect 2 , among them, you can name an alternate outfit for the squad member, unlocks the fourth Power  of said member and also makes that character loyal, which can be vital for the final Mission  of the game.

Thane: Sins of the Father Walkthrough

Getting ready.

Like Samara's Loyalty Mission , there are no Enemies  to be faced here.

Walkthrough

Head to the Citadel with Thane as one of your squad members. Talk to Captain Bailey  at C-Sec, and ask him about Thane's son. He checks and finds a local petty criminal named Mouse , was seen talking to a Drell . Mouse  was a poor kid who grew up in the Citadel . He is also selling VIs of Commander Shepard . You can find  Mouse  on Level 28, near Rodam Expeditions. He recognizes Thane Krios  immediately, because a decade ago, Thane used a young Mouse  to gather information on his assassination targets. You have several ways to convince him to tell you who hired Thane's son:

  • Charm option nets you 5 Paragon points.
  • Intimidate option net you 5 Renegade points.
  • Intimidate interrupt, awards you 5 Renegade  points.
  • You can pay him x3000 Credits.

He will reveal that Elias Kelham , hired Kolyat for a hit.

To learn about the Commander Shepard VIs that Mouse  is selling you have to ask him about them before asking about Kelham. You can ask for a copy of the VI, tell Mouse  to stop selling them or for a cut of the profits he is earning by selling your image. Head back to C-Sec once you are done with Mouse .

Ask Captain Bailey  for help to find Kolyat . The situation gets awkward now because Captain Bailey  and Elias Kelham  have an arrangement. The criminal bribes the Captain in order for him to look the other way. In the end, the C-Sec Captain is willing to help you by arresting Elias Kelham . You have the opportunity to interrogate him before his lawyer arrives, again several options are presented before you:

  • You can intimidate him by saying "I'm a Spectre. Start talking". It doesn't matter if you were actually reinstated by the Council.
  • You can beat him three times to make him confess in time. This is done by using the three Renegade  interrupts.
  • Don't use the first two Renegade  interrupts, but only the third one to use the Spectre card (If reinstated by the council). Doing so gives, Elias Kelham  gives you the confession before the lawyer arrives.
  • At the last dialogue point, use the Charm or Intimidate option to get the confession.
  • If you don't manage to get the confession before his lawyer shows up, you can still pull the Spectre card (If reinstated by the Council), or make a deal which either blackmails his lawyer that Kelham was bribing people or threaten everyone in the room with a Weapon . The advocate will either be powerless to stop you or, wisely advise Kelham to make a deal.
  • If you didn't knock out Elias Kelham  or used all the Charm options, you can choose to rat Mouse  for some Renegade  Points.

Eventually, he will confess to ordering the hit on Joram Talid , a Turian  running for local office.

Captain Bailey  arranges for transportation to where Talid is located. Thane Krios  tells you to shadow Talid from the catwalks from above. To the right, you can find a datapad that will provide an upgrade ( Titan Pulsar ). Then, you can update Thanke  on Talid's location. This is the meat and bones of the Mission . Getting close to Talid, update Thane and then wait for the Turian  to move again.

If you do not update Thane on his son's location, a cutscene will interrupt you, and you'll see Kolyat murdering Talid. This will lead to Thane lament that his son's path was inevitable. Although the Mission  will be labeled as completed, Thane Krios  will not be loyal.

After the fourth update, Talid will wait outside a store while his Krogan  bodyguard goes inside. Then both will run into a nightclub and meet a group of Krogan .

Up in the catwalks, you will encounter a stock boy called Jim Reynolds, To get past him, you have three options: an Intimidate interrupt, Charm or Intimidate. You get 5 Paragon points for the Charm option and each of the other two grant you 5 Renegade  points. If you don't choose one of these options, you will be given more Intimidate interrupts, Charm options and renegade options until you finally knock him out for zero morality points.

Kolyat  is waiting for Joram Talid . He manages to wound the bodyguard and pursues the Turian  to his apartment. Both you and Thane Krios  chase after  Kolyat . Once you reach Talid's apartment,  Kolyat  is ready to kill Talid when you arrive along with a C-Sec officer and his father, Thane Krios . You can use a Paragon interrupt to distract  Kolyat  and disarm him. If not, you can wound  Kolyat  or killing Joram Talid .

Kolyat  is angry at his father for only just now caring about him. You and the C-Sec officer give the Drells  the chance to have a private talk. Back at the C-Sec station, Captain Bailey  tells you about a series or murders ten years ago he has found into the archives, and the primary suspect was a Drell . You tell him not to pursue those cases.

At the end, you discuss with Captain Bailey  and Thane Krios  what to do with  Kolyat  since he attempted murder.

  • Use the charm option to obtain +5 Paragon points , sending  Kolyat  to do community service.
  • Use the Intimidate option to obtain +5 Renegade  points, to allow Captain Bailey  to employ  Kolyat  privately.
  • Do neither, will end up with  Kolyat  imprisoned.

Mass Effect 2 Guide: How to Recruit the Assassin, Thane Krios

In the fight against the Collectors, Shepard needs every asset they can convince to join their cause, and Thane Krios makes the perfect addition.

Mass Effect 2 introduced a vast array of squadmates who specialized in every combat tactic imaginable. Going up against the Collectors meant having a wide variety of talented individuals not just willing to accompany Commander Shepard through the dangerous Omega 4 Relay, but to potentially sacrifice their lives for the greater good. Each potential squadmate had their own reasons for joining the fight, and the assassin's purpose was far less complicated than many of the others.

Thane Krios spent most of his life as a killing tool wielded by the Hanar. He'd taken a lot of bad out of the world, but later in his life he used his power for vengeance, creating a rift within in him that sought balance and peace before his death. Joining Shepard on their mission was one surefire way to leave the world having done a truly altruistic deed that could benefit the entire galaxy. But first, Shepard had to find him.

Mission: Illium

mass effect thane mission

Arriving on Illium, Shepard meets a Nos Astra official named Careena, who explains that all docking fees have been taken care of by Liara T'Soni . Liara would like to see Shepard in her office. Reuniting with her offers Shepard the opportunity to ask about Thane Krios, who she says arrived on Illium a few days earlier to target Nasanna Dantius. Shepard may have interacted with Nasanna in Mass Effect 1 . Shortly after arrival, he contacted an Asari named Seryna in the cargo transfer levels.

Follow Liara's directive to Seryna, whose desk can be found beneath the Shipping sign in the cargo transfer area. Seryna used to be Nasanna's head of security, but was fired after questioning her boss's cruel ambitions, including the assassination of her own sister. Seryna wants to see Nasanna put in her place and believes Thane is the perfect solution, so she gladly takes Shepard to the currently under-construction Dantius Towers. Make sure any business is completed at the station before departing; once Shepard leaves, they cannot return until after the mission is complete.

Mission: Dantius Towers 2

mass effect thane mission

In front of the tower, a group of panicked Salarians  exits followed by security mechs. Take out the mechs, then shoot the glass out to engage FENRIS and LOKI mechs. Once they've been dispatched, head left into the room to find a hackable terminal with 4800 credits and a medical station. Back out and head straight to encounter a wounded Salarian near the door. Speak with the Salarian, taking advantage of the Paragon interrupt to give him some medi-gel to stabilize him, then ask about what's going on inside the tower.

Related: 5 Sci-Fi Games To Try After Playing Mass Effect

Head through the door and straight down the hall, preparing to take cover from the Eclipse mercenaries and mechs. This initiates a long bout of combat consisting of several waves of mercs. Battle through them carefully until reaching the end of the hallway and taking the ramp to level two. Grab the two med-kits and the thermal clips at the top, then take cover as the next wave of Eclipse mercs advances. There are four swarms in this round, take cover as necessary and wipe them out while advancing through, then pick up the clips and med-kit on the floor before advancing toward the narrow doorway for the next encounter. Position squadmates on either side of the entry ramp, then duck out the door to pick off the mechs and mercs.

Explore the area to find a hackable terminal with 4200 credits, a power cells crate and the M-97 Viper sniper rifle . Bypass the nearby door to find a two huddling Salarians who explain that someone not working for Nasanna locked them inside to keep them safe. Conversation with them provides opportunity to gain morality points, so choose carefully based on preference when they are presented, and then pick up the med-kit and the 3000 credits from the safe inside before moving on.

mass effect thane mission

Next, head back to the elevator and put squadmates into cover, as a wave of enemies will come pouring out when the elevator arrives. Activate the elevator and take cover, preparing to fire on the enemies as they exit. Grenade launchers are effective in taking them out more quickly. Once they've been dispatched, collect clips and medi-gel, then take the elevator to the third floor.

Related: Mass Effect 2 Guide: How to Recruit the Krogan Warlord

Outside the elevator, an Eclipse merc talks via radio to his superiors. Shepard and squad take him by surprise, leading to an opportunity through conversation to earn some morality points and a Renegade interrupt that allows Shepard to kick him out the window if they wish. Through this dialogue, Shepard learns how to get to Nasanna, and can gain Paragon points by allowing him to make a run for it and reconsider his life choices. There is a datapad on the floor to pick up for a side quest.

The next room leads Shepard to two more Salarians behind a closed door, one of them pointing a gun. Shepard can use the Renegade interrupt to punch the Salarian, or wait because in his panicked fear he will actually fall unconscious. His brother explains they were being threatened by an Eclipse merc, whose head mysteriously exploded. The Salarian took the gun to protect them and they hid. Pick up the medi-gel and hack the PDA on the dead merc for 6000 credits, then head back out to the ramps leading to the bridge and the roof. There are power cells available in this area, as well as a hackable comm terminal that can be used to annoy Nasanna and another M-97 Viper to pick up if the first one was missed.

Mission: Murder on the Rooftops

mass effect thane krios

Arriving on the roof, battle through the mechs and mercs to reach the bridge. Once they're all taken care of, pick up the eezo crate and use the weapons locker if in need of a weapons change. There is also a medi-gel pick up near the locker, so grab it and advance into the next round of combat. Completing that encounter, hack PDA for 12000 credits, pick up the medi-gel and scan for the submachine upgrade, then head toward the bridge leading to the other tower. Fight across the bridge, and when reaching the other side, take cover as another wave will pour out of the building. Enter Nasanna's penthouse and prepare to recruit the assassin.

A cutscene brings Thane out of hiding in the ducts, and after he kills his target, he will ask Shepard about their mission, so explain that he is dying from a non-communicable disease. He agrees to join them, pro-bono. With the assassin successfully recruited and the mission complete, he agrees to meet them back on the Normandy .

Back on the ship, Jacob expresses deep distrust for the assassin, claiming he is little more than a merc for hire. But, Shepard telling Jacob that Thane agreed to do this job for free shuts him up. Thane asks to be given a room in a dry area of the ship, and that is where he will be found for conversation throughout the rest of the game.

Mass Effect 2: How to Get & Keep Thane Loyal

mass effect thane mission

It’s safe to say that Thane is a fan-favorite character from the Mass Effect trilogy , and has some pretty great moments to discover through dialogue. He isn’t protected by plot armor though, so if you don’t know how to get and keep Thane loyal in Mass Effect 2 , then you’re likely to get his blood on your hands and miss out on said great moments.

Worry not though, as we’re here to help prevent that outcome. Below you’ll find detailed instructions on how to keep this Drell assassin kicking, well into Mass Effect 3.

How to Get and Keep Thane Loyal in Mass Effect 2

To start, you won’t have access to Thane as a squad member until you complete the main mission he’s tied to, Dossier: The Assassin.

The mission takes place on Illium, and is impossible to miss. As such, all you need to do is play the game normally until you encounter and recruit him.

Mass Effect 2 How to Get and Keep Thane Loyal

Once this occurs, you can increase his loyalty the same way as any other squad member. Speak to him whenever possible, and make sure to keep your conversations from being antagonistic. Before long, this will lead to his loyalty mission, titled “Sins of the Father,” being unlocked.

It’ll involve a series of dialogue exchanges across the Citadel aimed at stopping Thane’s son, Kolyat, from assassinating a Turian politician. It can be failed if you don’t stop Kolyat in time, or if you don’t have a high enough Paragon/Renegade rating for certain dialogue choices.

To that end, you’ll want to make sure your Paragon or Renegade score is at a decent level before attempting this mission. Once you’ve taken care of this requirement, complete the mission as soon as you’re able.

Once it’s done, Thane’s loyalty will be maxed out and he’ll be able to make it through the Suicide Mission without dying.

Time needed:  2 hours.

So, to recap how you can get and keep Thane loyal in Mass Effect 2:

You’ll need a decently high Paragon or Renegade score for certain dialogue interactions, or else there is the chance you can fail the mission.

Can You Lose Thane’s Loyalty?

Oh, and before you ask: No, there is no way to lose Thane’s loyalty after gaining it in Mass Effect 2.

Unlike some other party members, Thane won’t get into a nearly irreconcilable argument with anyone. Once he’s been convinced to trust Shepard, it’ll be unwavering for the rest of the game.

That’s all there is to know about how to get and keep Thane loyal in Mass Effect 2 . For more on the game, check out our Mass Effect Legendary Edition guide wiki . It has other guides which can help you maintain the loyalty of your squad members, improve your chances of romancing someone, and more.

How to Romance Thane Krios

This page of IGN's Mass Effect 2 wiki guide is all about romancing Thane Krios , including what you need to do to initiate and Lock In the Romance .

Courting Thane

Thane Profile C.png

Thane Krios is only available for Female Shepards, and can be courted after you successfully complete his Loyalty Mission, Thane: Sins of the Father. Assuming you do so, you can court him in three conversation stages. Each conversation stage is reached by completing the one before it, then doing a Mission or Assignment before talking to him again.

Loyalty Mission

Before a Romance with Thane can begin, you need to successfully complete his Loyalty Mission. You fail it if you cannot inform Thane of Talid's location changes before the meter runs out. If that happens, Kolyat kills Talid and escapes, and Thane is far too upset to initiate a Romance with you.

First Stage

In the first stage, pick "I want to talk about you" to check in with how he and Kolyat are doing. You'll learn how he and his wife met; once he's done, pick the (somewhat infamous) "I want you, Thane" option to initiate the Romance .

Second Stage

Once again pick "I want to talk about you" to continue the Romance , where Thane will explain why he took the Dantius job and what the word siha means. At the end, pick "I care for you too" to continue the Romance further.

If you've also been approaching Jacob or Garrus, you'll have to set the record straight with Thane first before you can continue the Romance . If Thane is truly who you want Shepard to be with, pick "

Third Stage

As always, pick "I want to talk about you" to continue the Romance . To Lock in the Romance , pick "I'm fine" when it appears early on. This conversation is rather short, but no less important than the rest since it Locks In Thane as your Romance partner.

Romance Scene

Once you initiate the Suicide Mission via the Omega-4 Relay, you'll get the Romance Scene before it truly begins. This is your last chance to back out of the Romance: pick "It's just nerves" to do so. If you want to continue the Romance, pick "Thane. I'm worried about you".

The Suicide Mission

Tartarus Debris Field slice7.png

As Thane is a member of Normandy's crew, you must also make sure he survives the Suicide Mission at the end of Mass Effect 2. To do that, first make sure that you have as many Squad Mates Loyal to you as possible before grabbing the Reaper IFF , and upgrade the Normandy's Shields, Armour and Cannon at the Research Terminal.

Thane happens to be the only Romance Option in the game who is not suited for any of the bespoke roles, those being Vent Specialist, Leader of the Second Fireteams, and the Biotic Specialist. As such, do not pick him for those roles.

If you do not have a Loyal Jack or Loyal Samara / Morinth, avoid picking Thane as a Squad Mate for "The Long Walk" through the Seeker Swarms, as he'll be put at risk in that case. If Thane isn't Loyal but you still want to keep him around, avoid picking him for any defined role or as a Squad Mate: that will get either himself or somebody else killed.

Mass Effect 3 Disclaimer

As mentioned at the top of this page, romancing Thane Krios in Mass Effect 2 comes with a big caveat if you intend to continue into Mass Effect 3. To mention why is considered a spoiler, so click the Spoiler Box below if you want to find out.

Mass Effect 2

Screen Rant

How to romance thane krios in mass effect 2.

Thane has one of the most tragic stories and romances in the Mass Effect trilogy. A female Shepard can begin a romance with him in Mass Effect 2.

As a deeply spiritual assassin fighting a debilitating and terminal illness, Thane has one of the most tragic, heartfelt stories and romances in the Mass Effect trilogy. Thane is one of the poster characters for the Mass Effect series and a fan-favorite thanks to his compelling backstory, motives, and sacrifice. In Mass Effect 2 , Thane is a romance option for a female Shepard, but there are a few missions players must complete before they can begin his romance arc.

Shepard will first need to choose to recruit Thane on Illium, then secure his Loyalty before any romantic options become available to her. Additionally, Shepard learns right away that the romance can only end in tragedy, as Thane is dying and knows his days are numbered. To romance him, Shepard will need to comfort and support him. Even though Shepard is involved with Thane, he will not be automatically protected from harm during the Suicide Mission, so players will need to do their best to keep him alive or risk cutting the romance short. If Thane survives the events of  Mass Effect 2 , players can continue the romance into  Mass Effect 3 . Here's how to begin a romance with Thane in  Mass Effect 2 .

How to Begin a Romance with Thane in Mass Effect 2

Thane in his quarters in Life Support aboard the Normandy in Mass Effect 2

Following the mission on Horizon in Mass Effect 2 , Shepard will receive new dossiers from The Illusive Man for more squadmates to recruit . One of these results in the mission Recruit the Assassin , which takes place on Illium. Shepard will need to follow infamous assassin Thane Krios to ensure he survives his attack on the ruthless asari diplomat Nassana Dantius. If players intend to have Shepard begin a romance with Thane, it may be a good idea to prioritize this recruitment mission.

Once aboard the Normandy, Thane's Loyalty mission is usually one of the last to trigger. During this mission, called Sins of the Father , Thane and Shepard travel to the Citadel and attempt to stop Thane's son, Kolyat, from following in his father's footsteps and assassinating a politician with an aggressively anti-human platform. This is one of the Loyalty missions Shepard can fail, so players will need to be careful. Failure to keep an eye on Kolyat's target and send Thane frequent updates will result in Kolyat getting away and prevent Shepard from securing Thane's Loyalty . Without his Loyalty, the romance will not trigger.

As long as the mission was successful and Thane and Kolyat reunited, Shepard can stop by Life Support to talk with Thane following Sins of the Father . During this conversation, Thane will open up to Shepard about his wife's death and the aftermath. Shepard will need to express her support and interest to start the romantic arc. Thane will call her "siha" and promise to share what it means another time.

Thane comes to Shepard's cabin before the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2

In subsequent conversation, Shepard will need to continue demonstrating her interest in Thane, and he will eventually tell her that siha is one of the fierce and protective warrior angels of the goddess Arashu from his pantheon. He will confess that he has feelings for her. To accept and continue the romance, Shepard must choose I care for you too or else risk breaking it off.

Shepard has the option of checking in with Thane periodically. During these conversations, she will always need to reassure him to keep the romance going. She also has the option to break things off if she has chosen a different partner.

If Shepard began romancing Garrus Vakarian or Jacob Taylor at any point in Mass Effect 2 , Thane will mention he has noticed others also have Shepard's eye. At this point in the arc, Shepard will need to make a choice and commit, breaking things off with any other love interests, to continue romancing Thane.

Shepard and Thane spend time together in Shepard's cabin in Mass Effect 2

The next time Shepard  talks with Mordin Solus , the professor will also offer advice about human-drell relationships, as he does with any alien Shepard chooses to romance. While not required, this scene can be a humorous reminder that others on the ship take notice of the relationship building.

Should Shepard follow all these steps, just before the Suicide Mission, Thane will meet her in her cabin and tearfully confess that he is no longer at peace with the idea of his own mortality. Shepard will need to comfort him, expressing her worry about him using the dialogue option Thane, I'm worried about you . Choosing to dismiss his feelings here as just nerves will cause him to leave. If Shepard expresses her concerns, the two will share an intimate moment before the cutscene fades to black.

It is important to keep Thane alive during the Suicide Mission if players want to continue the romance into Mass Effect 3 . Shepard must make sure to upgrade the Normandy ahead of the mission, as Thane is one of the most likely to die going through the Omega 4 relay otherwise.

mass effect legendary edition thane

Thane is not a good choice for any of the team leader positions during the infiltration of the Collector base, so Shepard should avoid choosing him. She will need to choose effective team leaders, however, to minimize the risk of Thane being killed due to a bad decision. Thane is also most useful as part of the defense team during the fight with the final boss, as as he contributes a lot to the overall defense score and can help keep others alive.

Should Thane survive the events of  Mass Effect 2  and the player continues the game following the credits, Shepard can talk to him again in Life Support about the mission. Later, Shepard will have the option to use the Intercom in her cabin and call Thane up to the room. Players can use various interactions around the cabin to let the couple sit together, sleep together, or cuddle. The romance can continue into Mass Effect 3 .

Best Mission Order In Mass Effect 2

Quick links, prologue: joining cerberus, act 1: putting together your team, act 2 – part 1: finishing recruitment, act 2 – part 2: gaining loyalty, act 3: endgame.

For the most part, Mass Effect 2 is a linear RPG. However, the game does give you some freedom when it comes to mission order. Each act of the adventure has an abundance of quests to take on, and it doesn't matter which you do first or which you save for later.

Mass Effect 2: All Upgrade Locations

Yet, playing each mission in a specific order can improve a playthrough in various ways. For instance, if you complete quests in the optimal sequence, you lower the risk of losing characters by the end of the game. Plus, your narrative experience can be enhanced simply by doing certain missions at certain times. So, here is the order in which you should complete all of the main content.

Updated January 26, 2024 By Ben Jessey: You can play most of the Mass Effect 2 missions in any order you want. However, there is an optimal order that improves the narrative experience and keeps characters alive. We laid out that optimal order in this guide. And now, we've returned to the piece to make sure it's still accurate and easy to read.

During Mass Effect 2's prologue, you have no control over which missions you play . The sequence of events includes an attack on the Normandy, Shepard joining Cerberus, and a visit to Freedom's Progress.

The lack of freedom in the opening stages makes sense as the game slowly introduces you to its mechanics and sets up the story.

Mission Order:

Things start to open up once the prologue ends as the Illusive Man gives you multiple recruitment missions to do at your leisure . You also have a few other quests to keep you busy.

Optimal Mission Order:

After the Horizon quest, the Illusive Man points you toward three more people you should recruit. Plus, this is when loyalty missions start appearing, so make sure you're regularly talking to your teammates.

For the first part of this act, you can only do five quests before triggering the next Collector assignment.

You have plenty of freedom in the wake of the Collector Ship investigation as the game doesn't force you to start the next mission. In fact, you want to avoid initiating the Reaper IFF quest for quite some time .

Instead, the second part of Act 2 is about getting almost all of the loyalty missions done . And these quests are crucial because they help you keep everyone alive during the Suicide Mission .

Mass Effect 2: Should You Save The City Or The Spaceport?

Act 3 serves as the endgame , and it doesn't allow much time for side content. So, make sure that you've done everything before starting these quests .
