Whether you call it business acumen, knowing the business, developing an enterprise mindset, or thinking like an owner, there are few things more fundamental to the success of a business than having leaders who have an in-depth understanding of how their business works. Your leaders need to know what makes their business tick: where it excels (and where it may have weaknesses), how it outflanks the competition (and how it gets beaten), how it makes its money, what’s going on in the external environment, and what’s the connection between its strategy and its results.

A timeless and critical requirement Knowing the business inside out is a timeless requirement. As noted business thinker Ram Charan wrote back in 2006, “linking an insightful assessment of the external business landscape with the keen awareness of how money can be made — and then executing the strategy to deliver the desired results” is an art. “No single aspect of managerial skill,” he wrote, “is more important.”

While having this degree of business understanding has long been regarded as essential at the highest executive levels in an organization, it’s made its way over time into becoming a requirement for leaders at all levels.

Why is this type of thinking so critical? Why is it so important to have throughout an organization and not just at the top? The business environment has become so complex, fast-moving, and perpetually changing that decision making is increasingly being dispersed to lower levels in the organization. There’s no time to wait for decisions to be made at the top and wind their way down; organizations can’t afford to have decision making at any level that’s occurring in a vacuum.

Those making the decisions at both the highest strategic plane and at the everyday tactical level need to be fully versed in strategy, grounded in market realties, and conversant in financial matters. And, research conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit found that over 65% of leaders surveyed agreed that insufficient business acumen was a primary factor in limiting their organization’s ability to realize strategic goals.

The fundamentals of knowing the business Knowing the business rests on three broad fundamental elements: understanding the organization’s strategy, market orientation, and financial literacy. The first element—understanding strategy—means making sure that your leaders have an understanding of how your company plans to create and capture value and use this insight to inform their day-to-day decision making. That’s an important way in which they can support your organization’s goals. A market orientation requires awareness of why your customers make the choices they do. It also requires future thinking: keeping a close eye on the business environment you’re operating in, looking for new opportunities and contributing to the organization’s strategy. Financial literacy enables your leaders to make decisions that make sense from a financial point of view. (Is winning that big deal much of a win if the costs of delivering on it exceed the revenue?)

Answering three key questions Knowing the business provides leaders the grounding they need to answer three key questions. What makes your company thrive? How can you tell if your company is thriving? How does your company’s business run (its business model) and how can it operate successfully in the market (its strategy)?

What makes a company thrive? Ram Charan has identified four essential building blocks that help an organization thrive: doing a better job than the competition when it comes to satisfying customer needs; generating cash; producing an adequate return on investment; and growing profitably. Your leaders must understand not only how these building blocks work stand-alone, but how they are related to each other. There may be times when your organization is able to temporarily sacrifice one of the building blocks to achieve a long-term goal. But long run viability requires that all four building blocks stay standing.

How can you tell if your company’s thriving? Every leader should be able to read and interpret basic financial statements: profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow. This may seem intimidating at first, but it doesn’t actually require any wizardry. It just requires an openness to delving into the numbers, developing basic familiarity with key financial terms, and paying attention to the key metrics for your organization—and what the implications are if these metrics are “off.”

How does your company run—and how can it operate successfully? Equipping your leaders with an understanding of how the business works and how it will succeed will enable them to make better decisions. This means being able to answer important questions such as: Who’s the customer? What’s important to them? How can we increase the total value our organization creates and captures? What’s the strategy that will enable our company to do this better than the competition? –.

A win for the organization—and for the individual Having leaders at all levels who are more knowledgeable about the business and more adept at decision making is a clear win for an organization. It’s also a win for the individual leader. Knowing how the organization really works and using this knowledge to help make better decisions increases connection and job satisfaction. And speaking the universal language of business—strategy, market orientation, and financial literacy—is every bit as much of a career booster as having solid domain expertise.

Whatever term you use for it, knowing the business is a capability that’s an essential element for every leader’s portfolio.

When you think about people who are successful, skillful, or intelligent, how do you think they got there? Did they earn those traits? Were they just lucky or gifted?

Do you consider these traits to be the result of hard work,  perseverance, and persistent learning from failure? Or do you believe that skill, intelligence, and success are entirely genetic and that some people are just naturally talented in certain areas, and others aren’t?

These different viewpoints are known as fixed and growth mindsets.

What does it mean to have a growth mindset?

So, what is a growth mindset?

The growth mindset concept was originally developed by Stanford Psychologist Carol Dweck. She introduced the idea to the public in Mindset: The New Psychology of Success .

In this book, Dweck demonstrates how people (students, in particular) can be divided into two groups. There are those who have a growth mindset and those who have a fixed mindset.

The growth mindset definition is:

People with growth mindsets  believe that skill and intelligence are something that people can develop. They believe that while people have inherent qualities and traits, success comes from constant personal development.

The fixed mindset definition is:

By contrast, those with fixed mindsets believe that talent and intelligence are something you either have or you don’t.

That is, some people are good at certain activities, and others excel in different areas. They don’t believe that practice, failure , and strategy development are key to developing talent or intelligence.

What Dweck discusses is that those who do develop a high degree of talent are more often people with a growth mindset.

Interestingly, those with growth mindsets experience greater success and skill development.

It works both ways.

5 growth mindset myths

There is sometimes a lack of clarity for many as to what the growth mindset theory really means.

So, let’s start by debunking some growth mindset myths and discuss a few realities and findings that stem from Dweck's research.

First, let’s take a look at five common misconceptions about a growth mindset:

1. The mindsets are either/or

When we first learn about growth and fixed mindsets , the tendency is to try and identify with one or the other.

After all, it seems like a binary concept, with just two beliefs to choose from.

The truth is, the mindsets aren’t generally an either/or affair. Most of us sit on a spectrum somewhere in between a growth and a fixed mindset.

2. An organization can have a mindset

Another challenge presented by the growth mindset culture is the myth that organizations can have a mindset.

Inspired leaders often claim that “our organization has a growth mindset.” This typically isn’t true.

Organizations are made of many people, and each individual person has their own mindset.

An organization can seek to foster and develop growth mindsets in the individuals within it as part of its company culture . But a business cannot have a growth mindset in itself.

3. A growth mindset is the same as a positive mindset

A growth mindset is not simply about remaining positive.

Growth mindsets are about believing in the potential for development and that learning a new skill comes from practice and perseverance . It’s not simply from natural talent.

4. Growth mindsets automatically lead to positive results

A growth mindset in itself does not guarantee results. Nor is a person with a fixed mindset excluded from success.

A growth mindset coupled with the motivation to improve, a commitment to personal growth , and time put into developing a skill drives positive results.

5. Everyone has unlimited potential

The truth is that not everyone is capable of absolutely everything.

Some believe that having a growth mindset means that the achievement of anything is possible.

This is inaccurate. Individuals with a growth mindset recognize that their innate ability and limitations play a part as well.

But they also understand that their capacity for achievement does not start and stop with their genetic makeup.

4 growth mindset realities

Now that we have busted some common myths, let’s look at four realities about a growth mindset.

1. Most people are somewhere in between

When Professor Carol Dweck analyzed students' mindsets, she did not identify a purely binary result.

Though most students in the classroom lean strongly toward one side or the other, most were found to have mindsets somewhere in the middle.

They might believe, for example, that their ability to improve at math comes down to teaching strategies and their own attention and commitment to the learning process .  But they might also believe that their reading and writing abilities are inherent.

The same observations can be made in the workplace.

2. Growth mindset is more than just effort

Dweck has noticed, as growth mindsets are embraced by the leader and educator alike, that many seem to believe that it all comes down to effort.

Dweck notes that some teachers seem to believe that they can improve a student’s achievement by telling them to try harder. She calls this a ‘false growth mindset.’

Effort is important. But more crucial is a student’s attitude toward learning a new thing  and their perspective on failure as a part of the learning process.

3. Not everyone can achieve everything

Each individual has limitations that a growth mindset intervention might help combat but cannot overcome entirely.

The 5’2” 22-year-old is unlikely to become a player in the WNBA.

4. Positive results come from a growth mindset and working toward a goal

Growth mindset students and employees are people who understand that positive improvement is possible.

They believe that to achieve their goals, they must:

  • View failure as a part of learning
  • Put in the time
  • Embrace the challenge
  • Develop new strategies to overcome each challenge

Working toward a goal  without these views is unlikely to elicit positive results. Cultivating a growth mindset won’t do much without putting in the necessary time and practice to develop a new skill.

Growth mindset vs. fixed mindset

We’ve discussed what a growth mindset is. But how is it different from a fixed mindset?

Here are the differences between the two viewpoints:

13 tips to develop a growth mindset

Now that we’ve discussed the benefits of a growth mindset, let’s walk through some tips on how you can develop one.

First, we will talk about actions you can take right now, and then we’ll give you some action you’ll need to commit to long-term.

Prepare to develop a growth mindset

Here are seven steps you can take right now to develop a growth mindset:

1. Determine where you sit now

Do you consider yourself more or less in the growth mindset pool, and you’re looking to make sure you stay that way? Or would you describe yourself as having a fixed mindset?

Knowing where you stand to begin with is the first phase. You can’t tell where to go if you don’t know where you are.

2. Explore why you want to develop a growth mindset

What is it about the growth mindset that motivates you to change? What benefits do you see a growth mindset bringing to your life?

Understanding this will give you purpose during the difficult stages of developing this worldview.

3. Find examples of others who have developed a growth mindset

Start talking to your friends, family, and colleagues about the growth mindset. See if anyone you know has also been working on developing one. They might be able to provide some valuable insights.

4. Change your perspective on failure

Start viewing failure not as a sign of inability  but as part of the process of learning.

Nobody starts out on any endeavor being the perfect example of the goal. Even the world’s greatest athletes, artists, and business magnates started out as kids with little talent or expertise.

5. Understand your own limitations

Recognize that some things will be beyond what you can achieve. This helps you to set realistic goals . It will help you understand that some endeavors (such as the ones that your genetic makeup is less suited for) will require even more effort.

6. Notice how you speak and act

Notice how you talk about talent and skill. Do you find yourself saying things like, “I’m no good at this” or “She’s just naturally talented”?

Swap those phrases out for “I’m not great at this yet.” and “She’s clearly put in a lot of effort to become so talented.”

Notice how others around you speak and act, and then seek out those who have growth mindsets and foster your relationships with them.

7. Learn about brain plasticity

If you're the kind of person who loves learning about how the human brain works, then consider diving into the world of neuroplasticity .

This will give you a neat physiological perspective on how the growth mindset actually works.

Start cultivating and developing a growth mindset

Once you’ve mastered the above seven steps, it’s time to start adding these growth mindset actions to your repertoire.

1. See your challenges as opportunities

Life will always find a way to throw something difficult at you. Try not to see these challenges as obstacles or setbacks that you dread. 

Rather, try to view them more positively. Try to view them as opportunities to overcome something difficult and grow as a result. The more difficult the challenge, the greater the opportunity for learning and growth.

2. Reflect each day on what you’ve failed at (and learned from)

Many of us spend some time at the end of the day reflecting on our successes. While this is a valuable habit, try adding a couple of minutes to reflect on the areas where things didn’t go as well. What did you learn from that experience? The point isn't to dwell or beat yourself up but to recognize and lock in the learning. 

3. Stop seeking approval from others

When we seek the approval of others, we take on the wrong objective. We start taking being right as our goal, rather than learning and growing. Become aware of the difference. Pause to recognize when you are pursuing approval rather than growth and remind yourself, kindly, to stop seeking approval from others. You’ll find that you become more comfortable with the daily failures that come with stretching.

4. Identify opportunities to celebrate the success of others

When others around you succeed, celebrate! More than this, get curious about what made them successful. Even better, ask them. Connect with others to understand what actions they took and how they approached the challenge to get there.

5. Focus on rewarding actions, not traits

You can help others develop a growth mindset, too, by praising their efforts and actions  rather than their inherent traits.

For example, if your child brings home a stellar result on their pop quiz, appropriate praise would sound like, “Wow, you did so well, you must have put a lot of effort into studying,” rather than, “Wow, you did so well, you must be very smart.”

6. Start using the word "yet" more often

This is a simple one. Whenever you catch yourself thinking “I’m not very good at this,” add the word "yet":

“I’m not very good at this yet.”

The final pillar is to evolve your business. After all, change is the only consistency in life. Evolving may be adapting your business, changing it completely, or innovating it. If you choose to evolve your business, first look at what it is exactly that you would like to focus on. Is it evolving your current offering? Or is it expanding your target audience?

Once you have decided, you need to research current activity in that area and look for inspiration. This will help you to generate ideas, and you can pick the most viable one to test a prototype and then evaluate whether it is worth implementing or not.

5 Ways to Develop a Winning Business Mindset

What’s the right blend of personality and perseverance that makes a successful business owner? 4. cultivate a genuine interest in other people.

You don‘t have to be an extroverted “people person” in the traditional sense, and many great entrepreneurs aren’t. But a fact of business is that somehow, in some way, your work will involve other people, whether you’re managing an entire team, catering to a single customer, or nurturing a growing audience.

Working with other humans can be messy, frustrating, and confounding—but it’s also delightful, surprising, fulfilling, and often a lot of fun. Yes, there will be wounded feelings and fragile egos; misunderstandings and conflicts. The right mindset means embracing it all, because running a business means pitching ideas to others, winning over investors and new customers, making those first few sales, and convincing other talented people to join you!

There are entire shelves of books on how to effectively work with people, but we can pretty much sum it up here: cultivate a genuine interest in other people. Stay curious. Listen. Be willing to learn from them, even if you don’t agree with them. Communicate in a way that makes them feel valued and respected. Greet them warmly. Treat them fairly. The rest will fall into place.

5. Ask for help early and often

Small business owners tend to have a do-it-all, be-it-all approach. This works in the early stages of a business, when you’re often wearing many different hats at once. But there’s a dark side: this can-do attitude sometimes prevents business owners from asking for help when they need it most. They’ll take on bigger piles of work, slog through ever-longer hours, fall asleep at their desks and forget to show up at dinner. Or worse—they’ll run their health into the ground, mismanage business risks, or burn out completely.

To succeed in business, you have to be prepared to ask for help. As innovative a trailblazer you may be, chances are that those who have come before you could share a helpful tip or two. Invest time in relationships with mentors and other business owners, and be proactive in asking for—and offering—help, insights, and advice when needed. Why Growth Mindset in Business is Important

The motivation for creating this blog post came after watching this 6 minute Youtube video which now has over 4.4 million views.

It’s “grit” and perseverance.

How can you build up your grit?

Adopt a  growth mindset and suppress your  fixed mindset!

In this blog post I spoke to eight growth mentors and got their take on what growth mindset means to them, why it’s important to success in business and life, and tips on how to develop one.

Let’s preface the advice by pitting the growth mindset and fixed mindset into a 1:1 comparison table to put things into perspective… 

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

I define a mindset to be the lens from which I view the world. A growth mindset is an empowering lens from which I can see how to better myself and my business Oz Merchant - Founder at Wellistic

How to develop a growth mindset in business, lets dive right in!

Your whole goal is to not quit

Having a strong mindset is not a status quo, but rather a journey.

“Most of the times the difficult part is to retain the mindset and just not quit,” says serial SaaS founder and professional Jazz musician  Mike Rubini .

Mike continues, “ There are several things I personally do for that, one of the best things you can do is taking care of yourself first so that you operate at your peak state. This will both make yourself a better human being and a better founder.”

“Especially at the beginning we are doing everything ourselves and often times we fall into the trap of thinking that the greater our input, the greater and the better the output will be. That’s just not true. We all know what to do: work less but more focused, eat healthy, move, sleep well (do not work at night), get inspiration from nature and life experiences.”

Discomfort is your friend

If you want to grow, you’re going to have to get uncomfortable.

Nothing worthwhile comes easy, which is why discomfort shouldn’t be avoided, but rather embraced and welcomed.

Manish Balakrishnan , an experienced startup mentor and VC consultant said, “discomfort in of itself is a pretty good barometer to measure if you are stretching yourself. Growth mindset is defined as a collection of traits which manifest itself in founders who have a genuine curiosity, a willingness to learn, are comfortable being uncomfortable and resilient to the core.”

If you are comfortable with what you are doing you are not pushing the boundaries enough Manish Balakrishnan

Gunter Richter , a management consultant with 20 years experience under his belt, also echoed a similar sentiment. “Having a growth mindset can be a challenge. It’s often easier to stick with the things you know and follow the path of least resistance. Be conscious of this, and seek out activities that will challenge you, force you to learn new things, and to grow your skills.”

Prioritize thoughtfully (and do it fast)

Speed is also an important facet of developing a growth mindset, especially in the startup scene.

“Having a growth mindset is all about thoughtful prioritization at speed,” says Cara Hogan , content strategist at Zaius . “Every marketer in a growth stage company has a million ideas and a million more things to do, but not nearly enough time or resources to do it all.

“You need a firm grasp on what is the most important and will move the needle most for your business. Do those projects first, and you’ll be more productive, more efficient, and — most importantly — more focused on work that really matters.”

Assess if your habits are assets or liabilities

“Inquiring whether a belief or behavior operates as an asset or liability is crucial,” says Wellistic founder Oz Merchant . “This distinction provides them the perspective to feel renewed confidence in their strengths or an opportunity to examine blind spots holding them back.”

Oz added: “Eleven years ago, I embarked on my most important venture, something I called “Project Me”, a journey of self-exploration to reexamine all my beliefs and decide if they are worth keeping or not. It’s an ongoing journey. I’m still a work in progress.”

Get out of your own bubble

Oz adds, “I think as an Entrepreneur or CEO, self-reflection and openness to change become the cornerstones of success. It’s easy to get caught up in a bubble of your own ideas which reinforce your own beliefs. We have to work extra hard to question existing beliefs and seek out new external sources of fresh information to integrate into.”

Here are three simple ways Oz recommends to stay out of your own bubble:

  • Read books outside of your normal preference — topics that don’t typically get your attention
  • Attend meetings where you meets people outside of your typical customer or client base. For example, if you typically engage with HR of financial institutions, then make it a point to speak to professionals in procurement or support in industries like healthcare or construction
  • Watch and reads news from opposing viewpoints to capture a richer perspective on world happenings

In the end, it comes down to whether you have a genuine desire to really know yourself and your limits. Red pill or blue pill? You decide.

To which Oz makes a very interesting point that “entrepreneurship provides the perfect opportunity to learn more about ourselves, as a business, especially in the early days, is a reflection of our strengths and weaknesses. It just takes the courage to explore.”

Your habits define you

“To me, a growth mindset is a constant effort in becoming a better person,” says Maciej Galkiewicz, decentralization enthusiast and CEO at Ragnarson. “It’s an endless road, not a goal to reach. It’s what you do with your life every single day.”

When Maceij thinks about changing the world and what it takes on a personal level, his mind travels to his morning rituals. “If you want to build a successful company and change the world, you need to make your bed first . I believe it’s tremendously helpful when your personal matters are taken care of.

Be curious about the world around you

Maciej adds: “Once you have your life under control, I suggest learning as much as you can about the world around us. It’s pointless to do something against the laws of nature.”

“Keep extending your interdisciplinary knowledge and develop mental tools which will help you in making sense out of the complex system we live in. It’s impossible to play well if you don’t comprehend the rules of the game.”

You should also stay curious about what’s going on in your industry.

This is what Vlad Calus the founder of Planable has to say: “I’m subscribed to some of the best newsletters in the industry like The Hustle and Coffee Brew to find out what’s happening in the tech world. I’m reading everything non-fiction on business development, startups and marketing.
