Description

Homeward Bound marks a century’s passing since the death of Ellen G. White and is a special collection that covers some of the major themes she wrote about through the years. Some of the topics covered include surrender and acceptance, victory in Christ, a united church, and the great controversy. In the section “The Book of Books” we find this gem:

The Holy Spirit, sent from heaven by the benevolence of infinite love, takes the things of God and reveals them to every soul that has an implicit faith in Christ. By His power the vital truths upon which the salvation of the soul depends are impressed upon the mind, and the way of life is made so plain that none need err therein.

--Christ Object Lessons, pp. 112,113

She also famously wrote, “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history” (Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, p. 196). It is our prayer that this volume may remind us not only of how the Lord has led us but also of His teaching through His servant Ellen G. White.

Homeward Bound

(NASB) Luke 9:51 “When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem…” (NASB) Luke 13:22 “And He was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and proceeding on His way to Jerusalem.”

Jesus set His face to go to Jerusalem and as He went He taught the people in city and village.  He knew He would suffer and die on the cross…He knew that!  However, He focused beyond that, not to His resurrection (as important as that is for the followers of Christ) but on His ascension!  He would be going home!  What joy He must have had as He anticipated re-uniting with His Father in glory (heavenly glory).

How often do you focus on the process and not the end results?  Focusing on the process is a defeat from the start!  The sense of “dread” is a defeat!  Self-pity is defeat, always!  Thinking about your circumstances may be a defeat!  Defeated attitudes plays into the hands of the devil…certainly that is defeat!

Jesus was never, ever, defeated by anything or anyone…ever!   Jesus was heading home…yet He never rushed but continued to teach people as He walked toward Jerusalem…as He traveled through the cities and villages.

What about your circumstances…how are you approaching this day?    Where is your ultimate focus?  Each person is going to die…at some point in time…what will your destiny be?  Where will you spend eternity?  Everyone will have an eternity…the question is, will it be heaven (for the believer in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord) or hell (for the unbeliever).  The Lord God makes it very clear…we have a choice today to decide our eternity.  It is your choice and mine.  Accepting God’s words of truth or rejecting them.

Your choices will determine your destiny.

Homeward bound …Jesus looked toward His ascension!   As Jesus was heading toward His ascension (and was homeward bound), how He must have yearned for people to hear, to receive and act upon His teachings!  He is yearning for you and me to hear, to receive and act upon His words of truth.

Homeward bound …are you walking with Jesus through this day and as you read His words of truth spoken for you?

Homeward bound …I love that thought…one day I will get to be in the actual, physical presence of my Savior…I pray that we will meet each other there…kneeling at the feet of Jesus…home at last.

Moving from Willpower to Real Power

This devotional was written by Doug Fields

I pray that you will begin to understand the incredible greatness of his power for us who believe in him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. — Ephesians 1:19-20 (NLT)

If you’ve ever been to a funeral, I’m pretty sure you’ve informally gone through the following process: you sit quietly in the funeral service and grieve the loss of a life, and in that quietness, you resolve to sharpen your goals. The reality of death awakens something in you, and in that moment, you want to focus on what really matters most. Maybe you go home and change the way you treat your close friends or family. That happens often for a day or two, and then the resolve fades. Why?

Easy answer! It fades because you go back to relying on your own willpower rather than on God’s power. I know this because I’ve gone through this spiritual ping-pong match many times myself. And my willpower isn’t enough for what matters most.

To be successful at this, we must move from willpower to real power. This is where we depend on God to help us define and achieve what matters most.

Today’s Scripture passage gives us insight into how God’s power—real power—is available to us. It means that, as Christians, since we have the Holy Spirit in our lives, we have access to His power. It’s the same power that defeated death on Easter morning! It’s the same power that created this incredible playground we call Earth! This same power is available to you,  to help you live a life with meaning, to heal relationships, work in your family and on the job, rescue your life when you need it, and focus on the things that matter most!

But there is a condition to obtaining this power. Did you notice it in the verses from Ephesians? It states, “the incredible greatness of his power for us who believe in him…” The power is available only  to those who believe. If you’re not a believer, this might sound like some bad news. But it can easily be changed into good news if you believe in Jesus and put your faith in Him. All you have to do is say yes to Him today.

God’s power is available to everyone. This includes you! When you believe in Him and depend on Him to give you His power, He’ll help you live the life you were created to live. God will give you all the power you need to gain a fresh start. He will help you make up for lost time as you finally begin to pursue what matters most!

GOING DEEPER:

1. What do you value most?

2. What percentage of your time do you feel you spend on what you value most? Is it enough time? If not, why not?

Homeward Bound

For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself now to appear in the presence of God for us.— Hebrews 9:24 .

In the courts above, Christ is pleading for His church—pleading for those for whom He has paid the redemption price of His blood. Centuries, ages, can never lessen the efficacy of His atoning sacrifice. . . .

The sin of Adam and Eve caused a fearful separation between God and humanity. And Christ steps in between fallen sinners and God, and says to them: “You may yet come to the Father; there is a plan devised through which God can be reconciled to humanity, and humanity to God; through a mediator you can approach God.” And now He stands to mediate for you. He is the great High Priest who is pleading in your behalf; and you are to come and present your case to the Father through Jesus Christ. Thus you can find access to God.

Christ Jesus is represented as continually standing at the altar, momentarily offering up the sacrifice for the sins of the world. He is a minister of the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched and not man. The typical shadows of the Jewish tabernacle no longer possess any virtue. A daily and yearly typical atonement is no longer to be made, but the atoning sacrifice through a mediator is essential because of the constant commission of sin. Jesus is officiating in the presence of God, offering up His shed blood, as it had been a lamb slain. . . .

The religious services, the prayers, the praise, the penitent confession of sin, ascend from true believers as incense to the heavenly sanctuary: but passing through the corrupt channels of humanity, they are so defiled that unless purified by blood, they can never be of value with God. . . . All incense from earthly tabernacles must be moist with the cleansing drops of the blood of Christ. He holds before the Father the censer of His own merits, in which there is no taint of earthly corruption. He gathers into this censer the prayers, the praise, and the confessions of His people, and with these He puts His own spotless righteousness. Then, perfumed with the merits of Christ’s propitiation, the incense comes up before God wholly and entirely acceptable. . . .

O, that all may see that everything in obedience, in penitence, in praise and thanksgiving must be placed upon the glowing fire of the righteousness of Christ.— God’s Amazing Grace, 153, 154 .
