Our 8th-Grade Curriculum

Mathematics.

algebra textbook for 8th-grade

For 8th-grade math, we are sticking to our favorite curriculum, Math-U-See . This year the boys are taking Algebra which covers the following topics:

  • Absolute Value
  • Adding and Subtracting Polynomials
  • Cartesian Coordinates
  • Coin Problems
  • Consecutive Integers
  • Equation of a Line
  • Exponents and Square Roots
  • Factoring Polynomials
  • Fractional Exponents
  • Graphing a Line: Inequalities, Parallel, and Perpendicular Lines
  • Metric Conversions
  • Multiplying and Dividing Polynomials
  • Order of Operations
  • Slope-Intercept Formula
  • Solving for an Unknown
  • Solving Simultaneous Equations
  • Unit and Square Unit Multipliers

This year’s workbook is a little different than the ones from previous years in that it has 35 chapters instead of 30. However, there are only two practice sheets per chapter as opposed to 3 making up for these extra chapters.

In the post, How to Use Math-U-See in Your Homeschool , I wrote about how to schedule these worksheets and tests using the 30-chapter textbooks but you can still use the same strategy for this year’s curriculum.

Language Arts/Writing for 8th-grade

english writing and grammar book for 8th-grade

We prefer BJU Press’ English curriculum and so I have ordered the English 8 workbooks, the teacher’s edition, tests, and keys. This curriculum covers grammar/usage and has writing assignments for 8th-grade level students.

If I don’t like a particular writing assignment, I will either modify it or come up with another writing assignment related to other subjects like history, math, or science.

U.S. History

A history of us by joy hakim.

history book for 8th-grade

For the past five years, we have covered world history for our history component which covered some parts of U.S. history. So, this year I want us to concentrate more on U.S. history.

I saw some reviews on this particular curriculum and many talked about it being boring. However, I find it to be thorough and honest .

Too often I read historical summaries of our country and have to remove the sugar-coating or expand on some snippets for my boys.

I have, so far, skimmed some of the chapters in this 11-book volume set and I like the extra facts she provides in the margins and what has to be thousands of pictures.

I believe there is at least one picture and/or map on every page. Tests are sold separately and cover unit topics.

pin image for 8th grade homeschool resources, schedule, and lesson plans post

Volumes 1-10 begin with America’s prehistory and end with the election of President Donald Trump. I was able to schedule volumes 1 – 5 this year and will cover 6-10 next year.

The 11th volume is a sourcebook that contains documents, court cases, presidential addresses, etc. that have shaped our country.

Elemental Science – Biology for the Logic Stage

science books

Homeschool science curriculums can be very expensive. This is why I was so excited when I found Elemental Science . Not only do they provide a very hands-on curriculum but their prices are reasonable.

For middle schoolers, they provide four different science “categories”: Biology, Earth Science & Astronomy, Chemistry, and Physics. I have started on Biology but hope to fit in Earth Science & Astronomy later in the year.

I do suggest checking out Amazon and/or the Christian Bookstore for some of their supplementary reading books at lower prices. For the “Biology for the Logic Stage” curriculum, the following are recommended:

  • The Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia
  • The Usborne Science Encyclopedia

One other thing I especially liked was that they also provide all the materials you need for your lab experiments .

Yes, I could have bought more than half the stuff that was in the box, but this meant having to buy more than what I needed and also more work looking for certain items.

Last year, I tried finding seeds for an experiment. Well, it was January and I couldn’t find a simple packet of seeds. Their box also comes with a preserved frog for dissection. Try finding that in Home Depot! This alone has Josh excited about science; Jack, not so much.

materials for lab experiments

I have gone through their student guide and teacher’s edition and love the layout of the lessons. They even provide two types of lesson plans, one for those who want to teach science 5 days a week and another set for 2 days a week.

We were able to finish Biology early so I added the edition below.

Elemental Science – Earth Science & Astronomy for the Logic Stage

We started this curriculum in March and managed to finish the first unit. We will continue with this curriculum in August.

Even though this series is for middle schoolers, I will continue it through their first couple of years of high school. Much of the material is review and so we are able to get through the units very quickly.

Periodic Table

books about the periodic table elements

We started our study of the elements last year and will continue it through our 8th-grade year. We cover one element a week which I schedule on Fridays. The books and resources we use for this study are:

  • The Intriguing Story of the Elements by Jack Challoner
  • The Periodic Table by Adrian Dingle
  • The Elements by Theodore Gray
  • Photographic Cards of the Elements by Theodore Gray
  • Productive Homeschooling’s Notebooking Pages to write up their summaries

spanish curriculum books

This year we are sticking to BJU Press’ Spanish 1 curriculum. We did very well with it. The boys are grasping the language more and more.

This curriculum has 12 chapters with 3 to 4 lessons in each. We did six chapters last year and will finish the other six this year.

I think going slow and doing all the exercises provided is what has helped the boys with their Spanish.

The only gripe I’ve had with this curriculum is that they do not provide lesson plans (although it states that they do) and this curriculum is very outdated especially when it comes to the cultural studies sections.

set of classical literature books

Last year, I supplied a list of books that I was expecting us to go through. However, some books were very long and so we only covered half of what I listed. So for 8th grade, I hope to finish that list with the following:

  • Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
  • Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell

Shakespeare

  • The Tempest

The books you see pictured above are Easton Press books. They are a bit pricey so I have provided links to cheaper versions on Amazon to fit your budget. But don’t forget that you can also borrow them from your local public library.

Additional Resources

We use Homeschool in the Woods Record of Time for creating our timelines . We’ve had these timeline books for five years now and I can tell you that there is not one bit of wear or tear in these pages.

The figures you see below come from their Collection of Historical Timeline Figures CD .

timeline book

We use Post-It’s 3 x3 Full Adhesive Notes for entering our historical figures and events in our timelines. This way, if we have to remove a figure/event to make room for another, it won’t tear or destroy our pages like glue or tape can.

More Resources

Below are additional resources we use in our homeschool:

  • American Student Heritage Dictionary and Thesaurus
  • Algebra DVD from MathUSee-contains lessons by the author
  • Spanish DVD from BJU Press Spanish 1 Curriculum-contains activities for speaking Spanish
  • The University of Chicago Spanish-English Dictionary
  • America, the Story of Us DVD for U.S. History

The Chaos and the Clutter

Huge List of Free Homeschool Printables

By Sharla Kostelyk

(This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, see my disclosure policy .)

Whether you are looking for free homeschool printables to supplement what your child is learning in school or to create an entire curriculum, I’ve got you covered. I’m sharing a reference list for finding the best online printables for free or almost free.

mother sits at table teaching a boy in a green shirt and girl in a purple shirt. Text reads "Mega List Free Homeschool Printables"

Free Printable Websites:

The Chaos and The Clutter – Right here on this site, you can find free printables. You’ll find unique printables such as relaxation cards for kids, emotion games, calm down tools, copywork, notebooking pages, and more.

Teaching Mama – Angela is the author of the very popular preschool curriculum Home Preschool Made Easy but she also offers free preschool printables on her site (as well as great craft and activity ideas!).

STEAM Powered Family – Find free STEM activities for your child or students. Whether it’s science, technology, engineering, or math that you’re looking for, you’ll find the coolest project here.

Productive Homeschooling – Productive Homeschooling has an awesome membership feature that I use, but they also offer some free notebooking pages as well. Notebooking is such a great tool for learning and especially good if you’re new to homeschooling. My kids love it!

Math Geek Mama – As someone who is math challenged, I appreciate this resource SOOOOO much! Bethany has incredible math activities that kids actually like to do and help moms like me who aren’t confident in their own math teaching abilities.

Left Brain Craft Brain – This is the perfect place to go for budding engineers. Find easy craft ideas, educational projects, and printables.

Growing Hands-on Kids – Heather offers printables related to sensory, homeschooling, fine motor and preschool.

Donna Young – Donna Young is often thought of as the original site when it comes to homeschool printables. It is best known for planners and home and school organization sheets but there are homeschool printables there as well.

Free Homeschool Deals – Free Homeschool Deals is one of my favourite homeschool sites (and not just because I’m a contributing writer over there!). I like that they share about free printables that you can find elsewhere on the web as well as their own free printables. I appreciate that they look at homeschooling families as a whole and realize that providing articles about saving money on household items also allows you to have more to put towards homeschooling and that providing encouragement for homeschool parents trickles down into the schoolwork too.

Frugal Homeschool Family – Frugal Homeschool Family also provides both their own free printables and shares printables from others as well as deals for homeschoolers.

Confessions of a Homeschooler – This is the original place I discovered free printables! I have used her Letter of the Week printables as well as many of her others, including lapbooks.

1+1+1=1 – This site has really good quality printables and printable packs, especially for Preschool and Kindergarten.

123Homeschool4Me – This site offers free printables in all homeschool subjects and even includes some in Spanish.

Blessed Beyond a Doubt  – There are a lot of free printables here and Jill seems to add more almost every day!

3 Dinosaurs  – Cassie creates some of my favourite printable packs and I am very thankful that she keeps them free. Many of them are huge packs and they work well for us for unit studies especially and for seasonal times.

This Reading Mama  – Spend a few minutes poking around Becky’s site. She does have a few resources and printables that she charges a fee for and she also has a ton of free printables. Her focus is on literacy and her printables are extremely good quality ones that will enhance your homeschooling.

Homeschool Share – Ami from Walking by the Way runs this site and it is a great place to search for any topic of printable you can think of. It has notebooking pages, educational printables, mini books, and more. I’ve used this site to find sheets to go along with topics we are studying because of its easy search feature.

Picklebums – Some of my favourite printables are from Picklebums. They are cheerful and fun.

Homegrown Learners – Homegrown Learners is best known for their free Lego printables. I am especially a fan of the minifig writing prompts.

Kids Activities Blog – I love this site for so much more than the printables but thought it is known more for the activities, they do have free printables and good ones at that!

Homeschool Creations – Perhaps best known for its great Homeschool Planner which is available for purchase, Homeschool Creations also offers free printables. There are a LOT but it takes a bit of navigating to find them all.

Living Montessori Now – There is a very large list of places here to find free printables Montessori materials.

Every Star is Different – Renae is regularly adding free printables for Montessori style unit studies.

Montessori Print Shop – While many of the printables here need to be purchased, there is a section for free Montessori printables.

Teach Beside Me – There are a wide range of printables here and I like that there are some that can be used for older kids which are generally harder to find.

Simply Vicki – Vicki has some nice out-of-the-ordinary free printables.

Education.com – Education.com has a large variety of free worksheets for all age levels. The selection is huge but you do have to put up with there being a fair amount of ads and many are only available through membership.

Handwriting Worksheets.com – Make your own handwriting printables.

Royal Baloo – Royal Baloo has free printables that focus mainly on preschool, kindergarten and the lower grades.

File Folder Fun – If file folder games is what you’re looking for, this is where you’ll want to visit.

In All You Do – This site has a selection of free homeschool printables, particularly for holidays, even the more obscure holidays.

Free Printable.com – While not expressly homeschool focused, there are printables here that can be used.

Homeschool Encouragement – Many printables available including some Lego printables.

Gift of Curiosity

The Crafty Classroom

Making Learning Fun

Of course Pinterest is a huge resource all on its own and a good source for finding printables.

Membership Sites:

Membership sites can still be a frugal choice because many have a one time fee so once the cost is recovered, everything else after that can be considered as free.

Productive Homeschooling – We have a lifetime membership to NotebookingPages and use them often for all kinds of learning opportunities. They have a huge selection and what’s even better is that you can even use their creator to make your own.

Enchanted Learning – I haven’t used this membership site myself but it looks to have a lot available.

Education.com – Education.com has a membership option.

Teacher Share Sites:

Many of the products on teacher share sites such as these are paid but there are also free unit studies and printable worksheets that can be found. Some of them allow you to search by cost so it’s easy to find the free resources.

Teachers Pay Teachers

This list is by no means exhaustive, but by using the links on this list, you can create curriculum, organize and plan entire homeschool years, and best of all, save a lot of money doing so.

Hi i’m liesl.

Liesl HomeschoolDen

Do you believe education can be exciting, inspiring, and full of joy? We do too! I love the quote by William Butler Yeats, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." It's about getting the kids involved, engaged, and fired up about learning (while juggling the rest of life too!)

A bit about me: I have my Master's from Brown University. I have more than 20 years of teaching experience. I was a high school teacher for many years both in the U.S. and internationally and also taught for the University of Maryland before leaving to homeschool my 3 wonderful kids. 8th grade reading list.

by Freedom Homeschooling | May 17, 2023 | curriculum , reading

free printable homeschool worksheets 8th grade

Are you looking for reading material for your 8th grader? This 8th grade reading list has numerous books to choose from. There is also at least one free lesson for each book included on the list. These lessons vary from book to book. Some are comprehensive unit studies or novel guides, while others are simply a set of discussion questions.

All of the lessons below are free, but you will need to obtain the corresponding books. You can buy used books , borrow them from the library, or click/tap on a book’s cover to purchase it on Amazon.

How I Created the List

When creating this 8th grade reading list, I looked at what books several different sources recommend for each grade. Often various curriculum providers and book lists will recommend a book for different grade levels. For this list, I used the average of the different recommended grade levels. Because of this, you’ll find that other sources may recommend some of the books on this list for another grade instead of 8th grade.

This 8th grade reading list does not include Shakespeare. Those resources can, instead, be found in the post Teaching Shakespeare With Free Resources .

Please note: As values, beliefs, and standards vary widely by family, I have not attempted to screen these books for appropriateness. I recommend that you read several reviews before choosing books for your child to read. The post  How to Choose Age Appropriate Books   lists several resources you can use to help ensure the books you pick are suitable for your family.

The books below are listed in alphabetical order by title. For additional book options, also check out our reading lists for other grades .

You'll find the choice of free worksheets can be overwhelming and you can waste a lot of time looking.

We decided the best way we can help is by using our own unique homeschooling experience of what actually works to make our own .

Our free alphabet and story writing worksheets are very popular.

Glad to help!

Thanks so much Sheila.

Fun Story Worksheets

story writing worksheets

One of the best ways you can help with English skills is to encourage your kids to start writing stories .

Once you've planted the seed and writing becomes something your kids want to do all the other English skills will follow.

So we decided that our very first free homeschool worksheets would be these story printables.

Homeschool Printables For Kids

You'll see our homeschool math page picks out the TOP THREE math worksheets for homeschooling.

I've covered more free printable math worksheets here, and our homeschooling guide to online math activities covers the best kids websites and free games.

Free Printable Worksheets

  • This first site, Enchanted Learning , was recommended by friends of mine when we first began homeschooling. It is a subscription site, but it has loads of free homeschool printables, kids crafts to make and worksheets for grades K through 3.
  • Donna Young has lots of free homeschool worksheets, though Donna admits she's a bit haphazard in helping you find them! But they're worth tracking down, and you'll find some interesting ones which help with general homeschooling. If you like to make an organized homeschool planner you'll find planning pages and calendar printables, along with record keeping forms.
  • Here's a guide to the best free homeschooling curriculum choices.
  • LearningPage has free printables for kids. If you click on the basics gallery you'll see a few free printables on calendar, time, alaphabet etc but I've recommended it for the galleries at the bottom of the page with facts and kids printables on reptiles, dinosaurs, zoo animals etc.
  • SuperTeacher has a large collection of math, reading, writing, phonics, spelling and grammar worksheets for kids. I also notice his free printables section had some great Christmas worksheets, crosswords and puzzles which would go really well with our free homeschool Christmas math activities .

Free Worksheets For Kids

I've already covered some great free homeschooling resources and I'm going to be looking at more free homeschooling worksheets and printables for kids because my list is getting too long to fit on one page!

I do think though, that every family is different and every child is different.  Free homeschool worksheets can be perfect for one child but won't work with another.

Which is why it would be great if you can suggest any that you like; that way everyone gets more chance to find ones that appeal to their kids!

What Are The Best Free Homeschool Worksheets You've Found? Tell Us...

It's very hard to find the best free homeschool worksheets and printables for your child. It would be great if you could let us know how you got on so others can benefit. What's worked for your children? What didn't? What advice would you give to others thinking of using the worksheets you chose? Please tell us...

Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool

A complete, free online christian homeschool curriculum for your family and mine, complete, all free curriculum.

free printable homeschool worksheets 8th grade

We exist to help families homeschool. We enable families to homeschool who thought they couldn’t because of a lack of finances, a lack of time, or a lack of know-how. Others join EP just because it’s easy and fun and they’re confident of the quality of education. EP seeks to free families from the burden of pursuing the “perfect” and encourages them to let it be “enough.” Each family and each child is different and we seek to provide the resources to enable your family to be who you were created to be.

Find our quick start guide at this link.

In 2011, I (Lee Giles) began putting my children’s assignments online so that they could work independently and so that I had the assignments saved for their younger siblings. I also wrote it from the beginning to be able to be used by other families. EP grade levels and individual courses include 180 days of homeschool lessons and assignments. It covers reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, math, history/social studies/geography, science, Spanish, Bible, computer, music, art, PE/health, and logic. It uses only free materials found on the internet.

This site holds preschool, kindergarten, and first through eighth. We have a separate high school site . Choosing a level (on My EP ) will set reading, language arts, math, computer and logic, any of which can be switched to a more appropriate level without affecting the others. Choosing a theme enables all of your children to study the same topic at the same time. The themes are based around the history courses of ancient history, early American history, geography and cultures, and modern history. Music and art are part of these themes and science is set to what would typically be studied at the same time.

You choose the courses. Set it and forget it. Then your child just clicks on the assignment box for each course (found on My EP ) and starts their assignments. It will track what lesson they are on and their days. It does not save any other information. We do not track your students. It’s just an aid for you.

And yes, it’s all free . You’ll need paper, pencil, etc. and some minor supplies if you choose to do the experiments and art projects, but all of the reading materials, etc. are all free and online. We do offer offline courses for math, reading, and language arts, which you can find in our store . In the store you can also find workbooks of Printables, the worksheets used in the online courses so that you don’t have to print. There is a suggested donation for using My EP if you so choose.

My hope is to enable families to continue homeschooling no matter their life circumstances. A sister site, All-in-One High School , holds the high school courses.

You can read my responses to the questions “Is it enough?” and “How can this be free?” .

You can read more about the curriculum on the  About  and  Overview  pages. You can also see if your questions have been answered on the FAQ page.

Note: EP is not an online school. We are a homeschool resource. Your home is the school! You are the administrator. We’re just here to help you on your way.

See what’s new on the site.
