1. Why didn't he pay the school fees on the day he brought money to school?

Ans: He (Munna) did not pay the school fees on the day he brought money to school because the fees collecting teacher, Master Ghulam Mohammed, was on leave and therefore, it was scheduled for the next day.

2. (i) What were the coins 'saying' to him?

Ans: The coins have been shown as his inner self and hence, they were asking him to buy the jalebis.

(ii) Do you think they were misguiding him?

Ans: Yes, they were misguiding him. The money which was given for the payment of school fees was going to be used for another purpose. They were telling him to buy jalebis and since he was a kid he got tempted by the delicious jalebis.

3. Why didn't he take the coins' advice? Give two or three reasons.

Ans: He did not take the coins' advice because he believed in honesty. Being a child who is good in academics, he had an image to protect in the school. Moreover, his fear of getting caught refrained him from doing so.

4. (i) What did the oldest coin tell him?

Ans: The oldest coin said that they were thinking for his own good. According to the oldest coin, he can get the scholarship money the next day also, and that money can be used to pay fees. Hence, he can use the fee money to buy the jalebis very well.

(ii) Did he follow his advice? If not, why not?

Ans: He did not followed its advice. Despite the fact that his mouth watered, he remembered that he was one of the school's most promising pupils. He had even received a scholarship of four rupees per month in the fourth-class exams. He also hailed from a well-to-do family and enjoyed a high level of respect. He'd never been beaten before. His teacher, on the other hand, had gotten him to beat the other students. He thought it was unseemly for a child of such prominence to be standing in the midst of the market eating jalebis. He returned home after explaining his motives.

5. He reached home with the coins in his pocket. What happened then?

Ans: When he got home, the coins started talking again. They started shrieking as he went inside for lunch. He was so irritated that he dashed out of the house, barefoot, for the market. Despite his terror, he swiftly requested a rupee's worth of jalebis. The halwai spread out an entire newspaper and piled a stack of jalebis on top of it.

6. (i) Why didn't he eat all the jalebis he had bought?

Ans: He didn't finish all of the jalebis he had purchased because he was already full. He'd eaten so many that jalebis would have come out of his ears and nostrils if someone had pinched his stomach just a little.

(ii) What did he do with the remaining jalebis?

Ans: He gave the rest of the jalebis to the kids who had gathered in the gali where he was eating them. He even spent the balance of his fees on more jalebis, and thus no money was left with him after that.

7. "The fear was killing me." What was the fear?

Ans: After eating, he realized he'd made a huge mistake. His greatest worry was being discovered and his parents discovering that he had spent all of his fees on jalebis. With each breath, he burped. Every burp posed the risk of bringing a jalebi or two to the surface. He was dying from terror.

8. “Children's stomachs are like digestion machines.” What do you understand by that? Do you agree?

Ans: As a result of their high physical activity, children develop a strong digestive system. He had digested all of the jalebis by morning. They have the ability to digest a greater amount of food than the average person.

Yes, I agree, because youngsters participate in more physical activity than adults, which keeps their digestive systems functioning.

9. How did he plan to pay the fees the next day?

Ans: He intended to cover the costs with the previous month's scholarship, which he would receive the following day.

10. When it is time to pay the fees, what does he do? How is he disobeying the elders by doing so?

Ans: Munna tucked his bag under his arm and walked out of the school when it was time to pay the tuition fee. He continued walking, hoping for a miracle that would save him that one time. He arrived at the Kambelpur train station. He had been admonished by his elders not to cross the railway rails. They had also urged him not to eat sweets with the money he had received for his fees. However, by doing so, he had disobeyed them.

11. What was the consequence of buying jalebis with the fee’s money?

Ans: The consequence of buying jalebis was when he got the news of receiving his scholarship the next month. Out of fear, and intention to hide from everyone, he fled from the school and went to the railway station. He remained absent for the first time in his life as a result of buying jalebis with his fees money. He disobeyed his parents for the first time and did something that his conscience would not allow.

12. His prayer to God is like a lawyer's defence of a bad case. Does he argue his case well? What are the points he makes?

Ans: He was not a good negotiator. He was primarily concerned with impressing God and making promises. He claimed to have memorized the whole namaaz. He even memorized the last 10 surahs of the Quran. He claimed to be a devout servant of God in need of the funds. He acknowledged making a mistake.

In his defense, he also claimed that he did not consume all of the jalebis. He gave them to the other kids. He pledged he would never eat sweets with fees money again, and that if he did, he would be punished as a thief. He claimed that God's treasury had plenty of everything, and even the chaprasi was well compensated for his efforts. Finally, he said that because he was the nephew of a powerful officer, God should grant him the money, even though he had only requested four rupees.

13. He offers to play a game with Allah Miyan. What is the game?

Ans: He offered that he would walk from where he was standing to the signal in order to win. Then God would bury four rupees beneath a large rock. In the meanwhile, he'd touch the signal and return. Then he'd lift the rock and uncover the four rupees which God has put underneath.

14. Did he get four rupees by playing the game? What did he get to see under the rock?

Ans: He didn't win four rupees because he played the game. Instead of money, he noticed a large hairy worm curving, twisting, and moving towards him when he lifted the rock.

15. If God had granted his wish that day, what harm would it have caused him in later life?

Ans: He would never have learned from the blunder he committed if God had fulfilled his prayer that day. He would have persisted in his bad behavior, trusting that God would save him every time he would commit a mistake, or come across a problem.

16. Select and read sentences that show,

(a) that the boy is tempted to eat jalebis

Ans: The lines that show “that the boy is tempted to eat jalebis” are:

Jalebis are meant to be eaten and only those with money in their pocket can eat them.

But then, these jalebis are no common sort of jalebis either. They’re crisp, fresh and full of sweet syrup.

My mouth watered.

(b) that he is feeling guilty

Ans: The lines that show the meaning of the given statement“that he is feeling guilty” are:

I felt like crying as loudly as I could.

When the recess bell rang, I tucked my bag under my arm and left the school and simply followed my nose, walking on and on.

Now for the crime of eating a few jalebis, for the first time in my life I was absent from school.

Sitting there under the tree, at first I felt like crying.

(c) that he is justifying a wrong deed.

Ans: The lines that show the meaning of the given statement “that he is justifying a wrong deed” are:

Allah Miyan! I am a very good boy.

I have memorised the entire namaaz. I even know the last ten surats of the Quran by heart.

I didn’t eat them all by myself, though I fed them to a whole lot of children too, but yes, it was a mistake.

17. Discuss the following points.

• Is the boy intelligent? If so, what is the evidence of it?

Ans: Yes, the youngster Munna was a bright student. He was one of the brightest pupils in school. He had obtained a scholarship of four rupees per month in his fourth-class exam. On the day he had to pay his fees, he was also going to receive the previous month's scholarship. He has also never missed a day of school.

• Does his outlook on the jalebi’s episode change after class VIII? Does he see that episode in a new light?

Ans: Up until class VIII, he wondered what harm it could have done to anyone if God had sent him four rupees on that particular day. Later, he came to the conclusion that if God provided everything a man asked for, he would still be living in vultures and crow nests and would not have learned how to make jalebis. By this, he meant that if God gave man everything he desired, he would make no effort at all, and become dependent on God for everything.

 • Why are coins made to 'talk' in this story? What purpose does it serve?

Ans: In the story, coins are made to 'talk’ in order to demonstrate the boy's avarice. His excellent temperament, which kept him from buying jalebis, shines through the words he spoke. The words echoed by the coins reflected his greed, which drove him to obtain the jalebis and devour them.
