Air france's boeing 777-300er seating configurations: a brief guide.

The French flag carrier has several different layouts.

Air France Tile

  • Air France's Boeing 777-300ER is the airline's most important aircraft in terms of prestige and premium offerings.
  • The high-density configuration of the 777-300ER can accommodate 472 passengers, with economy class dominating the layout.
  • Air France also has configurations with its luxurious La Première first class section and a mid-density layout with a mix of economy and business class seats.

Like many legacy carriers, the Boeing 777-300ER plays a critical role in the fleet of French flag carrier Air France and currently stands as the most numerous type operated by the airline. Currently, the airline operates 43 different 777-300ERs, and the airline also served as the launch operator for the most popular version of Boeing's best-selling 777 variant.

While the aircraft will soon be eclipsed in terms of numbers by the A220, of which 32 are in service, and 28 remain on order, the 777-300ER will still remain the most important in terms of prestige and premium offerings. Much like American Airlines only used to offer its intercontinental Flagship First product on its 777-300ERs, Air France only offers its luxurious La Premiere first class cabin on the type.

However, the jet's utilization is not limited to premium-heavy routes, and the plane remains among the most versatile in the carrier's fleet. In order to cater to a broad array of markets, the airline has three primary types of configurations (and four seating layouts) that it offers on the jet. In this article, we will take a deeper look at exactly what Air France's Boeing 777-300ER has to offer passengers.

High density

Taking a look at the data for Air France's considerable contingent of Boeing 777-300ERs, we can see that the most capacious configuration has space for an impressive 472 passengers. According to SeatGuru , this setup is known as the Caribbean configuration, with the high-density layout reflecting the leisure-focused nature of Air France's routes to the region.

Flight Review: Air France 777 Premium Economy - Worse than Economy?

While Air France operates a dozen planes with this configuration, they are not the only widebodies to operate services between the airline's Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) hub and destinations within the sunny Caribbean. Notably, the carrier flies its smaller Airbus A330-200 on flights to Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) in Saint Martin.

The 472-seat Caribbean layout is dominated by economy class seats, with these accounting for 430 passengers, or more than 91% of the overall capacity. Laid out 10-abreast in a 3-4-3 configuration, they offer a standard seat pitch of 31 inches. Some carriers prefer to keep nine seats per row, but given the types of flights that these aircraft operate for Air France, this cozier configuration makes more sense.

Air France B777-300ER

In front of the dominant economy section, these 777-300ERs also have a 28-seat premium economy cabin. These reclining seats have a 40-inch pitch and are laid out eight-abreast in a 2-4-2 setup. Meanwhile, business class is much less of a priority in this configuration, with the front of the plane featuring just 14 flatbeds. All of these have direct aisle access in a four-abreast (1-2-1) configuration.

Get all the latest aviation news right here on Simple Flying!

These flights make a lot of sense, as the airline handles primarily seasonal leisure traffic to destinations in the Caribbean. Business travel between France and the sunny island destinations remains limited, and as such, offering many premium seats would likely be detrimental to the carrier's bottom line.

The other end of the scale

Meanwhile, for routes where premium products are a higher priority, Air France also has 19 Boeing 777-300ERs that feature its luxurious La Première first class section, according to information published by the carrier . This exclusive cabin consists of a single row of four suites and is among the most luxurious products in the sky today.

Back in 2022, the airline decided to revamp its most luxurious cabin , adding a number of features and making some bold design choices. While the commercial aviation industry has begun to lean towards fully enclosed suites with mechanical doors, Air France has moved in another, somewhat classier direction.

In this cabin, the carrier offers passengers privacy with a curtain, offering an old-timey feel and a unique level of French character. The carrier continues to innovate in La Premiere now, with new menus from three-Michelin-star chef Dominque Crenn to be introduced this summer .

Air France Boeing 777-300ER

Business class is also well represented in this configuration, which has a total capacity of 296 passengers. Indeed, almost 20% of the seats onboard are business class flatbeds, with a total of 58. These are also laid out four abreast in the same 1-2-1 layout that graces the French flag carrier's Caribbean-configured 777s.

Air France 777 vandalized

Air France 777 Vandalized At Paris Airport

Moving towards the back of Air France's 19 La Première -configured Boeing 777-300ERs, we come across the same 28-seat premium economy cabin that is found onboard its high-density Caribbean-configured widebodies. Finally, this layout has 206 economy seats, less than half the number offered in the high-density setup. They share the same 3-4-3 configuration and have a standard 32-inch pitch.

Somewhere in between

Air France's remaining 12 Boeing 777-300ERs have seating configurations that fall between the two already mentioned in terms of capacity. Indeed, the third layout has a total of 381 seats, of which 315 (82.7%) can be found in the economy section, according to SeatMaps . Once again, this cabin represents a 10-abreast affair with a 32-inch pitch. This layout also has the smallest premium economy cabin.

Indeed, it consists of just 24 seats, compared to the 28 offered in the other setups. While this mid-density layout has a sizeable business class cabin, with 42 spaces in total, this offers a less favorable experience, as the seats are not fully lie-flat. They are also laid out in a seven-abreast (2-3-2) setup, meaning not all seats have direct aisle access. It is worth looking out for this when booking such flights.

Air France Boeing 777-300(ER) F-GSQI (2)

It is also important to note that the carrier does offer a fourth configuration that falls into this middle category. Currently, the carrier is retrofitting its 381-seat 777-300ERs to include just 369 seats, some of which have already entered service with the new setup. This will include a higher 48 business class seats, a doubled premium economy cabin with 48 seats, and 273 seats in the back of the plane.

The fleet in a nutshell

Let's conclude by taking a closer look at the exact makeup of Air France's Boeing 777-300ER fleet. As mentioned, the design is the French flag carrier's most numerous aircraft type, and ch-aviation currently lists 43 examples as being present.

Of these, 39 are active, with four undergoing maintenance. These jets are 15.5 years old on average, just above the average (15.2) for the fleet as a whole. Furthermore, two of the airline's 777-300ER aircraft are painted in the SkyTeam alliance livery.

General presentation.

As of December 2010, the Air France’s fleet operated 31 Boeing B 777-300ER aircrafts, with additional ones expected to arrive in the near future. They were introduced in the 1980’s as the first wide-bodied craft able to fly long distances. They have the longest range of the Air France fleet, being endowed with powerful engines. This variant comes in three layouts, this being one of them, used on routes to Caribbean and Indian Ocean. With a length of 73,9 m (242 ft) m and a wingspan of 64.8 m (212 ft), the Boeing B777-300ER is capable of a cruising speed of 560 mph/905 km/h. Its maximum range is 17,370 km (10,856 mi). The service ceiling of this aircraft is 43,100 ft (13,140 m). Business class passengers have noise-reducing headsets, a 10.4” interactive video screen featuring a selection of films and news broadcasts, a power outlet and individual telephone. The lie flat seats have a massage function and optical fiber reading lamp. Seats recline up to 131º. There are individual screens for Economy class passengers. Some people complain about noise from the Economy section. On some destinations, Tempo classes offer outlets for your laptop computer. Appropriate food (including breakfast, snack, lunch or dinner) and drink (non-alcoholic and alcoholic) are offered.

Review: world’s best Business Class seat – Air France Boeing 777 bulkhead suite

Wednesday  newsletters  always feature a  hotel  or  flight  review.

Last summer (July 2023), I enjoyed a phenomenal safari & beach holiday in South Africa and Mozambique, probably my best holiday ever. You can read my trip reports here:

Today: Review of Air France’s new Boeing 777 Business Class suite (Johannesburg to Paris)

After an incredible holiday in Southern Africa, I flew back home with Air France onboard a Boeing 777 which was equipped with the carrier’s newest Business Class product: suites with sliding doors arranged in a 1-2-1 reverse layout. As I already described in my review of the outbound flight, Air France’s new hard product is excellent and the suites – which are spread over two cabins – feature cutting-edge gadgets such as sliding doors, wireless charging, bluetooth audio, and 4K high-definition anti-glare screens. Combined with the carrier’s excellent soft product – which includes gourmet cuisine designed by Michelin starred chefs – it all makes for a terrific flight experience, hence why Air France is one of my favorite airlines .

On top of that, there’s one little-known feature that makes Air France’s new Business Class product even more special and unique. Its bulkhead seats – which are located in the front of both Business Class cabins, more specifically in rows 1 and 9 – offer an enormous amount of extra space, which equals that and even tops the space you usually find in First Class cabins. IMHO, these are currently the world’s best Business Class seats and they seem to represent some sort of a “Business Class Plus” product. So far, Air France has not made a lot of fuzz about this feature and the carrier does not charge extra for these seats but they are only available to Flying Blue elite members at booking (although they also become available to other Business Class passengers 72 hours prior to departure). For my return flight to Paris, I was able to select a bulkhead suite during the online check-in process, which would be the prelude of one of my best Business Class flight experiences ever.

Have you ever flown with Air France? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

  • My verdict (score)

1. SLOW LOUNGE AT JOHANNESBURG O.R. TAMPO AIRPORT

Air France does not have its own Business Class lounge at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport. Instead, it offers its premium passengers access to the Slow Lounge, a third party contract lounge located one floor above the airport’s main concourse. The Slow Lounge is comprised of two separate lounges, one to the left and one to the right of the reception area. Both lounge spaces feature a similar layout, and are divided into separate sections for relaxing, working or eating. Each lounge features its own buffet station (with a great selection of hot & cold dishes) and a beautiful bar area. Although the Slow Lounge feels chic and its food & beverage offering is excellent, the lounge does not have any windows (so it lacks natural light) and it might get very busy during peak hours (which was the case during my visit).

2. AIR FRANCE LONGHAUL FLEET

Air France has 63 Boeing 777s in its fleet: a mixture of 18 Boeing 777-200ER and 45 Boeing 777-300ER planes. These aircraft have an average age of 17 years (the youngest Boeing 777-300ER was acquired in 2016). Air France is the world’s 4th biggest Boeing 777 operator (after Emirates, United Airlines and Qatar Airways).

3. BUSINESS CLASS CABIN

Air France’s retrofitted Boeing 777-300ERs which are equipped with the new Business Class product feature 48 spacious suites spread over two cabins. The bulk of the suites is located in the front Business Class cabin, which has a total of 28 seats and consists of seven rows, while the rear Business Class cabin feels more intimate with only 5 rows of 20 suites. In both cabins, the Business Class seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone layout, providing all passengers direct access to the aisle.

All Business Class seats are equipped with a sliding door, allowing each passenger to create a totally private space, out of sight from the other passengers in the cabin. The seats located in the center of the cabin are equipped with a central panel that can be lowered by pressing it down, thus creating a convivial space in which to make the most of the flight together. Also, the seats at the front of both Business cabins (in rows 1 and 9) have an enormous amount of extra space in front of them for additional comfort, making them the best seats in the plane.

Air France’s new Business Class cabin has an elegant design and displays Air France’s signature colors: navy blue, the presence of white adding light and contrast, and touches of red embodying its excellence and savoir-faire. The carpet on the floor revisits the traditional ornamental herringbone pattern, symbolizing the emblematic world of traditional Parisian Haussmann apartments. The front of the cabin as well as the side panel of each suite feature a winged seahorse, embodying the founding myth of the company and its rich history. The cabin also feels very luxurious and plush as the carrier has chosen noble, soft and natural materials such as wool, brushed alluminium and full-grain French leather for the manufacture of its seat.

4. BUSINESS CLASS SEAT (+ BEST & WORST SEATS)

Air France has installed Safran Versa Business Class seat onboard its retrofitted Boeing 777s. With a pitch of 106 cm (42 inches) and a width of 53 cm (21 inch), the seat feels very comfortable, has excellent padding, and features luxurious accents, such as a dark navy blue seat fabric and a leather headrest. Located in its own shell, the design of the Business Class seat is based on the 3 “F”s: Full Flat, meaning that the seat transforms into a real bed almost 2 m (6.5 ft)  long; Full Access, providing all passengers direct access to the aisle; and Full Privacy, ensuring optimal privacy by means of a sliding door.

One side of the seat – located towards the cabin wall for the window seats or the center line for middle seats – features a large enclosed console, featuring a backlit picture of Air France’s iconic winged seahorse logo. On the inside, the console has a hook with the noise-cancelling headphones upon boarding, but once you remove them it has enough room to store your smaller personal belonging (e.g. cellphone, wallet, glasses). There’s also a vanity mirror inside this console and well as a handset for the inflight entertainment.  On the console’s outer wall is a reading light (at eye level) as well as a USB-A outlet.

Next to the console is a huge counter, which features a wireless charging station and a metal trim holding the seat controls. Underneath the counter are a small storage pocket (which can be used to store a bottle of water) and several power outlets (including a USB-C charger and AC power outlet). The seat’s bi-fold tray table is also located on this side of the seat and slides out from underneath the counter.

Each seat has a large 17.3-inch 4K high-definition anti-glare screen. The suite’s apex also features a footwell with an additional storage area underneath (which is perfect for stowing away a handbag or shoes). The ottoman is quite large, which enhances the sleeping comfort when the seat is fully reclined. When sleeping, the aisle armrest can be left up for more privacy, or lowered for providing some welcome extra bed width.

What are the  best Business Class seats ?

  • The bulkhead seats in the front of each Business Class cabin – in rows 1 and 9 – offer an enormous amount of extra space, which equals that and even tops the space you usually find in First Class cabins. There is so much space that when sleeping,  passengers can basically position their body any way they like
  • Solo travelers should choose one of the window seats, while travel companions should go for the middle seats.

What are the  worst Business Class seats ?

  • I suggest to avoid the last row in the front Business Class cabin (row 8) due to its proximity to the galley and lavatories.
  • I also suggest to avoid the last row in the rear Business Class (row 14) which is in front of the Premium Economy Class bassinet seats.

5. AMENITIES & BEDDING

Air France offers the following amenities to its Business Class passengers on longhaul flights:

  • A comfort kit made of 96% recycled material. Its plastic packaging has been removed in favor of an integrity seal. Sober and refined, it is available in two colours, navy blue and beige. Each kit contains a toothbrush and a pen made from maize straw, as well as earplugs wrapped in kraft paper to avoid plastic. A large sleep mask, socks, toothpaste and Clarins cosmetics complete the kit.
  • A soft microfiber pillow and a soft blanket
  • Air France branded noise-cancelling headphones, which are hard wired into the storage cubby and of decent quality

Unfortunately, Air France does not provide a quilted mattress. It’s probably the only thing I missed during my journey with the carrier, as a quilted mattress can really make a difference when it comes to the onboard sleeping comfort.

AIR FRANCE BOEING 777 BUSINESS CLASS

Air France has a long history of collaborating witch Michelin-starred chefs. In fact, it’s the only airline in the world to partner with so many Michelin-starred chefs, reaffirming more than ever its role as an ambassador for fine French dining and expertise throughout the world. On long-haul flights departing from Paris, Air France has entrusted the menu in its Business cabin to Michelin-starred French chefs. The greatest names in French haute cuisine, including Régis Marcon, Anne-Sophie Pic and Michel Roth, take it in turns to offer vegetarian dishes as well as refined dishes with red or white meat or fish. These meals are enhanced by tableware signed by French designer Jean-Marie Massaud. The wine and champagne list is selected by world famous sommelier Paolo Basso.

During this overnight flight from Paris to Johannesburg, two meals were served: a dinner after takeoff and a breakfast before landing. Menus were nicely executed (with all options mentioned in English and French), the dishes were beautifully plated, and the meals tasted excellent.

I choose the following selection from the dinner menu:

  • Appetizer: zucchini and goat’s cheese roll, beet mousse ball
  • Starter: tomato, black olive & red onion salad, mozzarella balls marinated in pesto & basil, salmon tartare, bruschetta with olive oil
  • Main course: filet of beef with herbs, potato purée, bell peppers and green beans
  • Cheese platter
  • Dessert: caramel cream puff, chocolate and vanilla tart, passion fruit and almond cake

Breakfast was served 90 minutes prior to landing in Johannesburg and included fresh orange juice, coffee, tea, pastries, yoghurt, and fruits. The hot dish was comprised of scrambled eggs, potato fritter, roasted tomatoes with herbs, and sautéed mushrooms.

7. ENTERTAINMENT

As already mentioned, each seat has a large 17.3-inch 4K high-definition anti-glare screen, equipped with noise-reducing headphones and a Bluetooth connection so that customers can use their personal headphones. A state-of-the-art graphic interface available in 12 languages makes it easy to choose from a wide variety of programs. More than 350 films are available, including a large selection of French movies, as well as TV series, documentaries, music and podcasts. A specific section on well-being also allows young and old alike to learn about meditation and seated yoga during the flight. Finally, kids have their own navigation interface to easily find all the entertainment specifically dedicated to our younger passengers. Air France’s Boeing 777-300ERs are also equipped with a nose and belly camera, streaming live footage to the inflight entertainment system.

8. ONBOARD INTERNET

In all cabins, passengers can use Air France Connect, the airline’s in-flight Wi-Fi offer. The portal offers three passes, one of which is completely free of charge and allows passengers to send and receive messages via WhatsApp, Messenger, WeChat, and similar services, although you cannot send or receive photos, videos, or audio files.

Two other internet packages are available for purchase on Air France’s longhaul flights:

  • The Surf Pass is available as 1-hour voucher for EUR 8, or a full-flight voucher for EUR 18. With this pass, you can surf the internet, and send & receive e-mails.
  • The Stream Pass costs EUR 30 for the entire flight and lets you surf the internet, send and receive e-mails including (large) attachments, send & receive messages including photos, videos, & audio files, and stream music, audio, & video.

9. OTHER INFLIGHT EXPERIENCES

# CREW : The flight attendants on this journey were very friendly and offered impeccable and courteous service. I was offered a handwritten welcome card by the crew upon boarding, which was a nice touch.

# LAVATORY : Air France’s Boeing 777-300ER features four lavatories for Business Class passengers: two are located behind the cockpit and the two other in the galley between both Business Class cabins. The lavatories were stuffed with Clarins toiletries.

I flew economy on Air India's old Boeing 777-300ER for 15 hours. The broken seat, light, and TV made for a rough journey.

I flew on Air India's legacy long-haul economy product from Delhi to Newark, New Jersey.

The television and the USB port on my seat were broken, making for a rough 15 hours.

Customers have better cabins to look forward to as Air India's new management looks to improve .

Air India may be on the rise with its swanky new Airbus A350 , but it can't escape the basket case that is its old long-haul economy product.

I flew from Delhi to Newark, New Jersey, in January on the company's aging Boeing 777-300ER. For 15 hours. In coach. (Business Insider paid a media rate). The specific plane, registered VT-ALO , is about 15 years old.

After hearing the horror stories about Air India's economy product, I had low expectations going into the ultra-long-haul journey.

And despite paying an extra $50 to reserve an aisle seat after being randomly assigned a middle, I happened to choose one that was completely broken.

Here's what the flight was like and how I passed the time without power outlets, a reading light, or seatback entertainment.

Going into my 15-hour trek from Delhi to New Jersey on Air India, I had low expectations.

The Tata Group originally founded Air India in 1932 before the airline was nationalized in 1953.

The Tatas, however, bought back Air India in 2021 in a full-circle moment and have vowed to restore its reputation, starting with a record 470-aircraft order for new Airbus and Boeing planes and a $400 million cabin retrofit — which can't come soon enough after my recent economy flight.

Air India is not the gold-tier airline it once was, and there was no shortage of online reviews complaining of broken seats and dirty planes.

Reuters reported many of Air India's seats were in bad condition, while The New York Times described poor customer service and reliability over the years.

Despite an OK flight in the carrier's awkward Boeing 777 legacy business class to Delhi, the return trek in economy was rough.

Similar bad reviews were written about Air India's legacy business class , which sports an uncomfortable 2×3×2 layout with no privacy.

This configuration means passengers could still be assigned the dreaded middle seat — and the window and middle seat travelers wouldn't have direct aisle access.

I managed to secure an aisle on my business class trek to India, and, despite concerns, the flight ended up not being as bad as I expected.

For my journey in economy back to the US, my trip started at Indira Gandhi International Airport around 11 p.m. for a 2:05 a.m. flight.

The late-night flight time didn't bother me because I figured I could kill the first few hours by sleeping, and I came prepared with a small pillow and blanket.

In total, the jet would fly about 15 hours, including across Russia — meaning the flight time is at least an hour shorter than American Airlines' route that doesn't cross Russian air space, according to FlightAware .

The app would not let me check in online and told me to see an agent at the airport — and I arrived to find a line a mile long.

After standing in the dedicated economy line with little movement for 15 minutes, I worried about the time as I still needed to clear security and passport control.

Stressed, I found a nearby employee and asked if he could help, given I didn't have any luggage to check. He eventually found a free agent willing to help who printed my boarding pass in less than two minutes, and I was on my way — one crisis averted.

Regardless of how well-traveled you are, give yourself an extra hour to check in when flying economy on Air India.

Check-in for my business class flight from New York to India the week prior was expedited thanks to the dedicated check-in lines for premium passengers.

Clearing passport control and security took another 45 minutes, and I finally arrived at the gate around 1 a.m.

I enjoyed a drink at the Irish pub in the terminal before walking 10 minutes to gate 26B.

There was another layer of security in which my bags and person were checked one last time before entering the sitting area by the gate.

A 30-minute delay was announced shortly after, which turned into an hour by the time we took off.

Having worked in the airline industry before becoming an aviation reporter, I know delays happen and do not give much thought to an extra one-hour sit — though I'll admit the late-night hour during this particular delay made it difficult to stay awake.

We didn't take off until around 3:15 a.m.

Unfortunately, the problems didn't stop there. After boarding the Boeing 777, I found my seat was broken in more ways than one.

Air India's legacy economy product is extremely old, and many online reports have noted seats being flimsy and dirty and sometimes held together by duct tape.

I actually found this to be true on my business class flight as the aisle seat next to me had tape on the side, and my chair's own power outlet wasn't working.

The faults started with the seatback television, which wouldn't respond to taps or the buttons on the handheld remote.

Regardless of where I tapped or the buttons I pushed, the TV stayed frozen on the home screen for 15 hours.

The cabin crew reset the system three times but to no avail. My screen wasn't the only one broken, either.

After I realized my TV was broken, I walked through the cabin to see how many others were out. I counted at least 15 screens stuck on a white loading page, including the person directly across from me.

When asked, a flight attendant told me that affected passengers could reach out to Air India after the flight to request compensation.

Also broken was the USB port, meaning I then had to be conservative with my battery when watching my pre-downloaded movies and shows.

Knowing there was a chance my television could fail, I downloaded enough content to keep me entertained for days. This mostly included podcasts and bingeable TV shows like Survivor and NCIS.

My portable charger was, unfortunately, already more than half-dead by the time I boarded, so I was careful with my aging iPhone's battery life when watching shows.

I also had to save battery for things like podcasts and Spotify when trying to sleep — I can't just listen to the sounds of the cabin.

As a backup to the backup, I brought a book just in case I found myself without any entertainment at all.

The book was particularly helpful when my phone was out of reach charging at another passenger's seat, who was nice enough to let me use their USB when they weren't.

Reading wasn't entirely easy, though. My remote not only didn't signal to the TV, but it also wouldn't turn on my reading light.

There was no external button on the ceiling for a reading light, so I had to rely on my phone's screen. I propped the phone against my chest, facing the book, and maxed out the brightness.

It wasn't perfect, but it worked well enough, and I could see the pages without getting a headache — but it was yet another thing that killed my phone battery.

In between balancing a light to read and keeping my phone charged, I mostly slept thanks to melatonin.

There was a lot of time to kill between Delhi and New Jersey, and I wanted to sleep as much as possible to avoid boredom.

Out of the 15 hours, I managed to sleep for about six in between meals, reading, and watching shows.

While the key amenities expected to work on an ultra-long-haul flight were busted, the aging seat wasn't all bad.

The main amenities I rely on for entertainment — the TV and charging ports — were broken, but there were some aspects about the product that were good.

According to SeatGuru, the seats offer 31-33 inches of pitch, depending on the row — which was plenty of space for my 5-foot-3-inch self.

The legroom is on par with competitors like United Airlines , which boasts 31 inches in economy. And Air India's seat width is 18 inches, per SeatGuru — more than United's 17.3 inches.

Not to mention, the 33 inches of pitch on some rows on Air India is higher than Emirates ' 32 inches throughout its Boeing 777-300ER economy cabin.

The seatback had several spots for storage — which was actually better than the seat in business class.

The business class seatback pocket was just one giant slot, while the one in economy had smaller slots attached to the main pocket for better organization. There was also a slot under the TV, where I kept my book.

I preferred the economy version, which reminded me of similar one I've found on airlines like ANA and Singapore.

A big cupholder also hung from the side of each seat, which helped organize the clutter.

When I fly, I always bring a big water bottle to stay hydrated, and sometimes, there isn't a good place to store it in economy.

I was happy Air India's big mesh cupholder held my bottle with no issues.

I also loved the footrest, which I've only seen on a few other carriers in the regular coach cabin, like All Nippon Airways and Aerolineas Argentineas.

I normally see footrests in premium economy rather than in regular economy.

This is true on recent flights I've taken with United and Singapore Airlines , for example.

The footrest complemented the nicely cushioned seat and good recline.

Although I will complain about the broken TV, I will credit the seat's comfort. The cushions are plush, and I found the seat roomy with good legroom and width.

I prefer it to the harder and slimmer seats installed on competing airlines.

My only issue with the comfort of the physical seat was the headrest — which was broken.

The wings of the headrest did not stay folded in, so it was as if it wasn't even there. I typically don't care about the seat's padding as long as the headrest works, so this was probably one of the biggest annoyances.

I ended up mostly resting on the tray table to sleep.

Despite its flaws, Air India is trying to make up for its shortcomings by elevating the so-called soft product.

The soft product is anything not physically attached to the aircraft, such as the food, service, linens, and amenity kit.

While new management, which officially took over in January 2022, needs time to improve Air India's poor onboard product, it has added nice touches where it can.

There was a pillow and blanket provided, as well as headphones for the TV (assuming it's working).

The pillow and blanket were fine, though the pillowcase could be softer. I still recommend bringing your own linens.

I was also happy with the food. The first consisted of a simple savory pastry and juice.

The first meal was served about an hour after takeoff, and I only nibbled on it as I wasn't that hungry given the 4 a.m. hour.

I found the pastry tasty enough for economy food.

Breakfast included eggs, sausage, potatoes, yogurt, and a croissant.

Served around five hours into the flight, the breakfast was tasty and filling, and I was happy a Western option was available.

I paired the meal with coffee and water.

For dinner, I had chicken with rice and beans served with bread, veggies, yogurt, and dessert.

The entrée was my favorite of all the food onboard. It was well-cooked and flavorful. The side dishes were good, too.

Other dinner options included a vegetarian meal or pasta.

I enjoyed a few Bira 91 beers with dinner and then read until we landed a few hours later.

Throughout the ultra-long-haul journey, I mostly slept and read — watching TV shows during meals when I felt confident my phone wouldn't get close to dying.

Considering the very few pros of the seat, my 15-hour trek from Delhi to New Jersey was disappointing, to say the least.

I expected a poor product but didn't expect to have the most important amenities completely broken.

If I didn't plan ahead and pre-download shows, movies, podcasts, and music, remember to pack a book (as someone who doesn't read often) and stock up on melatonin, then I can't imagine how I would've entertained myself.

My one mistake was not making sure my portable charger was fully juiced up by the time I got to the airport — lesson learned.

The broken features are not necessarily a design flaw but just an overall lack of care from the once-nationalized Air India to keep the interiors of its planes in good shape.

I didn't dislike the design of the seat itself. It's dated and in need of modern touches, but I loved the legroom, seat cushions, and big cupholder.

The problem was the state of the seat. The headrest was broken, and the tray table wasn't properly secured to the seatback. In fact, the tray in the middle seat next to me was held together by tape.

Fortunately, the Tata Group is already following through on plans to improve the airline — most noteworthy is its new planes and cabins.

Air India launched its first-ever Airbus A350 in January, which features new business, premium economy, and regular coach seats that are a night-and-day difference from its legacy 777 product .

Economy televisions have been upgraded, and Air India has kept the cupholder idea while adding more power outlets. I did not notice a footrest or think the seats felt as padded as the legacy version — but they were still comfortable.

In addition to its A350 and legacy cabins, Air India also flies leased Boeing 777s from airlines like Etihad Airways and Delta Air Lines.

For example, some customers — like those flying from San Francisco to Delhi — may get lucky with Delta's much nicer economy experience.

Travelers can check the plane they're on before booking by looking at the reservation or using websites like FlightAware.

Still, customers can expect to fly on Air India's legacy widebody product until at least late 2025, but a better cabin will eventually come.

"By the end of 2025, the entire legacy widebody fleet will also be upgraded to match what we're getting on the A350," Air India's new CEO, Campbell Wilson, told Business Insider in January. "So, essentially, our fleet will be completely reborn by then."
