I am a teacher, an English teacher actually, in Hong Kong. A large part of my role is skills, rather than knowledge teaching. To do this I have to take it back to basics, those basics are simple word construction and initial, medial and final sound recognition. This all depends on the level of my students, but one of my most important aims is to have students constructing and deconstructing simple CVC words. This selection of free CVC worksheets are my favourite ones I have made, and a selection of the best ones I have found. FREE Online CVC games

The future is here, and because of the pandemic it arrived a little earlier than most of us (me included!) were prepared for. Lockdowns and school closures put millions of students into a fairly haphazard and disjointed online learning environment. I had been using the online CVC games below in class, and they were reasonably useful for zoom classes as well. Yes, I tried to use online CVC games in zoom classrooms with six years olds! Some worked, some didn’t. Hey, we are all learning, right? I will put a little note on each one mentioning if I think its suitable for online group classrooms.

Phonics and reading skills Workbook

Some of these are mine, mainly because I made this in both app and online versions for my own needs, but 500,000 people now use them yearly so they have uses outside of my own classrooms as well. These are all playable online on PC, and some are also apps on the app store as well if you needed to download as phonics apps for classrooms.

And in the style of Steve Jobs, Just one more thing.

I should probably have put this at the top of this post, but I am presuming if you are searching for FREE CVC worksheets you are probably going to know what they are. However, just in case here we go.

In phonics we have a lot of jargon to help teachers understand (or to confuse them- we are still unsure about this) One of these collections of jargon and abbreviations is CVC. It simply stands for Consonant – Vowel – Consonant. These are made of some of the simplest words in English all containing a short vowel sound. They are perfect for emergent readers as they use single sounds that can be blended together to make words. When students have grasped the concept you can add CCVC (you can probably worth that out) and then CCvCC ( and I am fairly sure you can work out this one as well)

25 Free CVC Word Worksheets For Kindergarten: Easy Print

Looking for some CVC word worksheets for your kindergarten kids?

It is amazing how many words a kid can read when they master short vowel sounds and how to blend them with consonants!

If you didn’t know, CVC stands for – consonant vowel consonant.

Some examples of CVC words are cat, bat, dog, log, etc.

Below you will find 25 high quality printables that were carefully designed to help beginning readers build their phonics skills!

These pages include a warm-up, mini CVC word packet for each short vowel sound, and review worksheets to wrap it all up.

By the end of this 25-page printable set, your child will have mastered three letter words and she will be ready for the next reading challenge!

****Don’t stress! You can download the PDF file of all of these worksheets today! At the bottom of this blog post, you will find super simple instructions to print. No email address needed 🙂

Check Out Your Free 25-Page CVC Worksheet Packet!

1. skills warm up.

CVC Words Worksheet Kindergarten - 1

These first two free worksheets are a little bit of a warm-up and skills check.

To complete, have your child write the first letter of each word after looking at the picture.

Can your child consistently hear the consonant sounds at the beginning of these simple words?

Does your child have the fine motor skills to correctly write the missing letters?

Of course, you want to make sure they understand the name of each picture. For example, you can tell them it’s a “ram”, not a “sheep.”

Make sure your child has the phonemic awareness skills needed before moving on to the following worksheets.

2. Short A CVC Words Worksheets

CVC Words Worksheet Kindergarten - 3

All of the following printable worksheet packets will follow a similar format.

You are free to go through them in any order that makes sense to you and your early readers.

If you are looking for some structure, I would recommend starting off with the Short A CVC sheet. Cover the picture and have your child write a lower case /a/ in the blank.

Help her sound out the first consonant, use a visual cue for the vowel (I like to hold out my hand like there is an apple to prompt my own kids), and then sound out the ending consonant.

You may have to do this several times and that’s okay. When she is able to read the correct word, reward her by uncovering the picture!

3. Short E CVC Words Worksheets

CVC Words Worksheet Kindergarten - 7

Above is the short /e/ CVC word activity packet.

Your child will discover that even though there is a different middle sound, he can still sound out new word after new word!

That is the magic of phonics lessons and the skills you are teaching!

After doing the Short E CVC page, move on to Read, Write, and Color, and then on to the fluency sentences.

Your child may already recognize “I, see, this and a” as sight words, but if not, go ahead and help him read those portions.

The goal of these sheets is to sound out short vowel words, so no big deal if your kids stumble over these sentences.

****The visual cue to remember the short /e/ sound is to put your hand to ear like your straining to hear an e-e-echo.

4. Short I CVC Words Worksheets

CVC Words Worksheet Kindergarten - 11

To break up any possible monotony, these short /i/ kindergarten worksheets have a little bit of a different twist.

Instead of the fluency sentences with coloring, your child will read a sentence and then draw what they read!

This is such a fun way for kids to enjoy what they are reading – and for you to check comprehension. Your child will also have the chance to practice CVC names – Tim!

Of course, let your student know that you are not expecting any professional-level artwork.

Again, if he needs help with sight words, feel free to jump in and help them.

****My visual cue to remember the “i” sound is to pretend like there is a bug on my shoulder. I say “ick” as I pretend to flick it off. It will make your kid smile and help them remember the sound.

5. Short O CVC Words Worksheets

CVC Words Worksheet Kindergarten - 15

As you can see these mini packets are very similar in how they are organized, so your child will definitely start to feel comfortable with tackling each of them.

Can they work independently? That might be a huge confidence booster!

Again, feel free to do them in any order that makes sense to you.

****The visual cue that I use for short /o/ is wave my arms around like the tentacles of an o-o-octopus.

6. Short U CVC Words Worksheets

CVC Words Worksheet Kindergarten - 19

There are so many fun CVC words that have the short /u/ sound!

I hope your kids enjoyed discovering that they could read and write all of these new words.

If your child seems to be struggling, consider putting these pages in a plastic sheet protector. Grab your dry erase markers and pull them out for regular review.

****The visual cue for the short /u/ sound is to pretent to open an u-u-umbrella.

7. Review CVC Skills Worksheets

CVC Words Worksheet Kindergarten - 23

This free kindergarten worksheet will ask your child to write the missing vowel.

Hopefully, this is a light review after going through all of the previous worksheets. If your child struggles, that’s okay.

Continue to work on the visual cues to help the child recall the correct vowel sound for each word.

Be patient and provide lots of encouragement.

CVC Words Worksheet Kindergarten - 24

This worksheet is another opportunity for your child to review letter sounds for each CVC word.

Can your child hear and write the correct vowel or consonant sound?

***If your child is struggling to find the correct letter, check in and see if they understood the name of the picture.

CVC Words Worksheet Kindergarten - 25

This free worksheet is probably the most difficult in the bunch.

Your student will have to look at the picture and circle the correct word out of three very similar words.

Encourage your child to take their time and read carefully before choosing.

What About CVC Word Families?

CVC Worksheets on a mountain background

A CVC word family is a great way to help kids sound out new words quickly.

It essentially helps kids to recognize word chunks. Then they just have to add on one more sound!

Some examples of word families would be: -ig, -og, -at, and -ad.

Young learners can use them to sound out words such as p-ig, l-og, or b-ad.

Definitely check out my -AN Word Family Worksheets and my -AT Word Family Worksheets  for more on how to use word families as you teach reading.

I love showing my kids that they CAN read so many words with just the letter sounds they already know.

If you are a  kindergarten teacher, a teacher for English language learners, or a homeschool mom (like me!), I know these printable CVC worksheets will be just the thing for your readers.

They are perfect for morning time, review, literacy centers, group time, and more!

Before you know it, your child’s reading will move from three-letter words to consonant blends, long vowels, multi-syllable words, and beyond!

I promise it will happen. Always remember to be patient, encourage them, and stay postivite!

CVC Words for Kindergarten: Worksheets, Activities, and Games

Help kids get a lot of practice with their CVC reading and writing skills.

CVC Words for Kindergarten: Worksheets, Activities, and Games

CVC words are a fundamental step in learning to read. Once kids know their letters and sounds, CVC words are the first words they begin to read. Mastery of CVC words will form the basis for kids’ success in reading longer and more complex words.

New readers need a lot of exposure and practice reading CVC words. It’s not enough for kids to encounter these words in easy-to-read books. They need chances to work with the words in context and out of context. They need hands-on experiences along with chances to write, read, and spell these words.

Our list will help you create multiple activities using CVC words for kindergarten along with some worksheets that will give students meaningful experiences with these words.

What Are CVC Words?

CVC stands for consonant-vowel-consonant. CVC words are the essential words that kids first learn to read. Examples of CVC words include dog, cat, sit, hop, cut, etc.

These words are easy to read because they’re easy to sound out. Each phoneme contributes to the word. The vowels are always short.

Early readers learn CVC words in conjunction with sight words. Sight words don’t always follow the simple rules of phonics, and so are taught to be read on sight. CVC words are sounded out. Later, kids will read longer words with one or more CVC words inside, like catnip. A strong foundation in CVC words will help them sound out these longer words.

How to Teach CVC Words?

Before kids are ready to learn CVC words, they must have a strong grasp of their letters and phonemes. They must be able to pick out individual phonemes in a three-letter word. When CVC words are first introduced, kids need to be taught with direct instruction.

Once kids are familiar with the concept, they’re ready to do word work. Word work involves a variety of exposures to CVC words.

Manipulating and creating words through activities is great. Games often give kids a chance to read words in a fun context and may encourage them to be speedier at sounding out. Worksheets give kids practice reading and creating CVC words.

Printable CVC Worksheets

1. cvc matching.

Matching worksheets are great practice, especially for kids who are new to CVC words or are still learning to write. This sheet is a quick practice, perfect for reluctant learners. You can use it as a bellringer or as part of center work.

cvc words matching worksheet

2. CVC Word Writing

Kids need to be able to use their sounding-out skills to write CVC words. This worksheet features images of CVC words for kids to write. The three boxes under each image make it easy for kids to separate the words into sounds and give them support with spelling.

cvc word writing worksheet

3. CVC Word Families

Learning word families helps kids to read sight words more easily, as they only have to focus on the initial sound of the word.

cvc word families worksheet

This worksheet gets kids to think about word families by asking them to come up with several words for a word family. This worksheet can be used after teaching word families or as a way to get kids brainstorming.

4. Find the Missing Letter

One of the most important skills in reading CVC words is distinguishing each letter sound. This skill allows kids to sound out words. This worksheet gives kids a chance to complete words that are missing the initial, medial, or final letter.

find the missing letter cvc worksheet

5. CVC Word Search

Word searches are a lot of fun for kids. While many word searches may be too challenging for kindergarteners, this CVC word search is just challenging enough for more advanced learners. Kids can use pencils to circle the words or use a highlighter.

Activities and Games for Teaching CVC Words

Below are some of our favorite activities and materials for creating CVC word activities.

1. Building CVC Words

Duplo bricks have so many uses in the kindergarten classroom. For this activity, you’ll need a set of 2×2 Duplo bricks. Place a small piece of painter’s tape on each brick and use a sharpie to write a lower-case letter. Be sure you make plenty of vowel bricks and do a few commonly-used consonants.

duplo cvc words

Duplo bricks are especially great for building word families. For example, kids can create words from the -at family by building the letters a and t and then putting different consonants on top to see how many words they can form.

2. Letter Shapes

A set of letter shapes can come in handy for all sorts of activities in kindergarten, including CVC words activities. Students can practice building and copying words.

cvc letter shapes

Kids can practice building words they know or forming new words. Pairs can race to create as many CVC words as possible. Kids who are new to CVC words can use the letters to copy words.

3. CVC Words Parking Lot

Hot Wheels cars can be used for more than just imaginative play. You can use painter’s tape and a marker to put a letter on top of each car. Use a poster board or foam board to make the parking lot. Draw spaces. You can either write letters to make a CVC word in each space or leave the spaces blank for kids to make their own.

cvc words parking lot

4. CVC Cookies

Nothing motivates kids like treats. A set of alphabet cookie cutters can be used for all sorts of reading and spelling activities. You (or your class) can bake a batch or two of alphabet cookies. Before eating, kids can use the letters to make CVC words.

cvc cookies

5. CVC Puzzles

CVC puzzles are a great addition to any CVC word center. Each puzzle is made of three pieces that make a CVC word. Kids can put the pieces together to see the word.

For kids who are just learning to read CVC words, you may want to put fewer puzzles out or put more for kids who are advanced. You can order a set or make your own with index cards.

6. Boggle Junior

Boggle Junior is a fun game with an easy setup. It’s best for kids who have some prior experience with CVC words and is a good way for them to practice forming these words.

boggle junior

The Junior version is slightly different from the original, as kids match the letter cubes to words featured on cards. Because there are some four-letter word cards, you can remove these before playing. This game will grow with their students.

Boom is a fun take on traditional flash cards. To start, you’ll need to make a deck of flashcards with CVC words that your kids are learning. You don’t have to make a specific number, just make enough based on how many kids are playing. Then, create several cards with the word “BOOM!” written on them. Shuffle them into the deck.

boom cvc words game

A group of kids will sit in a circle with the deck in the center. Kids will take turns drawing a card. If it has a CVC word, they’ll read the word. If they read it correctly, they keep the card. If they read it incorrectly, they put it in the discard pile. If a student pulls a boom card, they have to put all cards in the discard pile. The player with the most cards at the end is the winner.

8. CVC Memory

Memory is a good game for kids who are just learning to read CVC words. Memory gives them exposure without too much pressure to read. There are memory games on the market, but you can easily make your own.

cvc words memory game

Create one set of index cards or cardstock with CVC words and another set with corresponding pictures. If you’re not artistic, you can find pictures online to print onto cardstock.

9. Swatting CVC Words

Sometimes the strangest things are a hit with kids. For this game, you’ll need some plastic flyswatters and bug cutouts with CVC words written on them. Stick the words randomly on a lower space of the wall.

Kids will take turns coming up to the wall. You’ll call out a CVC word and they’ll use the flyswatter to hit the correct bug.

cvc words swatting

CVC words are a fundamental part of kindergarten as they’re often the first words kids learn to read. Students need many exposures to CVC words to ensure they build a solid foundation. With a mix of activities, games, and worksheets, students will have a firm grasp of CVC words and be ready to move on to more challenging words.

What are CVC Words?

CVC words follow the pattern ‘consonant-vowel-consonant’. They are a great starting point in allowing children to practise combining individual letter sounds together to create meaningful words. They help consolidate a child’s letter/sound knowledge and give them practice at manipulating and combining sounds. The focus should be on hearing and sounding out each of the three sounds in CVC words. Find a   CVC word list here.

-at word family

How to use CVC Words

While CVC words can be used to consolidate letter-sound knowledge, they are also a great starting point when focusing on applying this knowledge. Working with CVC words gives children opportunities to combine letter sounds together to make familiar words.

CVC words are also great for the important skill of sound manipulation . This means being able to alter one sound in the word while keeping the rest of the word the same. For example, being able replace the ‘t’ with a ‘c’ in the word ‘tap’ to create ‘cap’. Use a whiteboard to write down a CVC word, say the word, rub the first letter off and replace it with another letter. What word does it make? For a challenge, you can try the same activity but replacing the final letter instead.

CVVC words are words with two vowels in the middle. These words often contain a ‘ long vowel ‘ sound, such as  rain . Find out more about CVVC words as well as long vowel sound activities and worksheets here .

CCVC and CVCC words

CCVC and CVCC words are words that begin or end with a blend or digraph . Blends and digraphs are explained in more detail here . Simply put, they’re words that begin or end with two consonants, like chin , or mash .

CVC Worksheets (7 Free CVC Printables)

CVC words are the first words children learn to read. Check out this collection of CVC worksheets and grab some free CVC printables, too!

If you want to t each your child to read, you might have heard about CVC words. They are the first words children learn to read.

CVC words follow regular sound-letter patterns so they are easy for children to start with. But you need some quality resources

These CVC Worksheets are teacher-created. Plus they are approved by a dyslexia mom.

Even though I taught hundreds of students to read, helping my own daughter has been trickier. But learning to teach her has helped me support parents and teachers better.

Brain science has evolved since we were kids – and we now know a lot more about how strong readers learn to read.

Say good-bye to using CVC worksheets to memorize more words. Or to using worksheets that rely on picture clues.

Instead, your child is going to build their phoneme-grapheme knowledge. That’s just a fancy way of saying sounds-to-letters.

So read on for some tips about teaching your child to read CVC words . Then grab some free CVC worksheets.

How do you teach CVC words?

Before you get in some worksheet practice, there are a few steps to teach CVC words:

  • Learn letter sounds
  • Practice oral blending
  • Read two letter words

Learn Letter Sounds

First, make sure your child knows the letter sounds. This may seem obvious to some, but it’s worth repeating:

your child won’t be able to read CVC words unless they can name the most common letter sounds.

You can use this free alphabet chart to help your child learn the letter names and sounds. For example, point to the letter A and say, “A, apple, /a/.”

Practice Oral Blending

Once your child knows the letter sounds, then practice oral blending. Say things like /m/ /u/ /d/ aloud and see if your child can blend them into the word mud.

If your child cannot do that, start with orally blending onset and rime. That means say /m/ /ud/.

These are phonemic awareness skills and they are required skills to teach your child to read .

Once your child can orally blending words, you’ll know they are ready to read two-letter words.

Read Two Letter Words

Last, start with just two-letter words like am, at, in, it, and on.

All you need is some letter magnets . Just place two on a magnetic surface and show your child how to read “at.’

Once your child can read those regular two-letter words, you can try CVC words.

seven free CVC words worksheets on a brown background. They are screenshot images of worksheets with a red cover that has a white girl and latino boy reading a blue book together.

At what age should a child read CVC words?

Children should read CVC words between 5-6 years old or when they are in kindergarten.

Some children with very strong phonemic awareness might pick up CVC words at four or when they are in PreKindergarten.

But most children need frequent and clear teaching to learn to read CVC words.

If your 6-7 year old is struggling with CVC words, dedicate a few weeks to frequent and deliberate practice. Some schools use a balanced literacy approach that lacks systematic phonics instruction.

After that, it’s time to request an evaluation for a reading disability at school or find an educational psychologist for an evaluation.

And now for the CVC worksheets:

a white CVC cut and paste worksheet on a red construction paper background. There are seven little squares already cut out and scissors, a glue sticker, and a green and orange crayon.

CVC Words Cut and Paste

These CVC Words Cut and Paste Worksheets build scissor skills and reading at the same time!

How to use the CVC Words Cut and Paste Worksheets:

  • Explain the instructions to your child.
  • Sit with your child while they read the first CVC word.
  • Help your child locate the picture that matches each word.
  • Show your child how to cut the whole strip of pictures off in a horizontal line across the bottom.
  • Then show your child how to cut off the other three sides to create a clean rectangle of 8 squares.
  • Your child can then cut apart the squares completely on the dotted lines.
  • Now your child can glue the picture for the first CVC word in the correct spot.
  • Repeat with reading and locating the remaining 7 pictures.

When your child is ready to be more independent:

  • Start by helping your child name each picture first.
  • Use the answer key as needed.
  • Instruct your child to read and glue independently.
  • Give feedback in a neutral way if you find mistakes. Just say, “Let’s read this word.”

Grab these CVC Cut and Paste Worksheets in the Printable Parents Shop. You can also find them on Teachers Pay Teachers .

CVC Hands-on Mats

The CVC Worksheets Hands-on Mats are perfect for young learners. If your child can’t write the letters yet, there’s no problem.  You just need some alphabet manipulatives.

How to use CVC Hands-on Mats:

  • There are four to a page. Just print 1-2 pages at a time.
  • Print on cardstock for durability.
  • Laminate if desired.
  • Grab some alphabet beads or alphabet magnets .
  • Show your child how to say the picture name.
  • Tap the three sounds in the CVC word.
  • Have your child name each sound and choose the correct letters.
  • Read the word your child built.

You can also use these CVC Word Mats as a more traditional worksheet:

  • Place inside a dry-erase pouch .
  • Use a dry erase marker to write in the letters.

Check out the CVC Hands-on Mats in the Printable Parents’ Shop or find it on Teachers Pay Teachers .

You can help your child learn to read much faster with the CVC Word Mapping Worksheets.

Your child will hear the words first and then write the letters to spell the sound. Connecting sounds to letters is a shortcut to learning to read.

  • Related: Word Mapping Worksheets

Using the CVC Word Mapping Worksheets:

  • Say the name of the picture for your child: “Lab.”
  • Your child taps the dots to segment the sounds: “/l/ /a/ /b/”
  • The child maps the letters one in each box: l a b
  • Last your child writes the word.

Grab the CVC Word Mapping Worksheets here. Or they are also on Teachers Pay Teachers .

CVC Word Ladder Worksheets

The CVC Word Ladder Worksheets help your child develop phonemic awareness skills.

Your child listens as you say each picture name. They hear the one sound that differs and change the letter to spell that sound.

Using CVC Word Ladder Worksheets

In the worksheet pictured, you would say:

  • The first picture is log. Tap the sounds in log. /l/ /o/ /g/.
  • Now map the sounds that spell log.
  • Write log on the lines.
  • Now we’re changing the first sound. The next picture is dog.
  • Tap the sounds you hear in dog.
  • Now map the sounds that spell dog.
  • Write dog on the lines.
  • Now we’re going to change the middle sound from dog to dig.

You continue all the way until your child writes the word bin. So your child changes the word log to bin!

Grab the CVC Word Ladder Worksheets or find them on Teachers Pay Teachers.

Dot the CVC Word Worksheets

These Dot the CVC Word Worksheets are perfect if your child:

  • Guesses instead of reading each letter
  • Loves dot marker or bingo daubers

Using the Dot the CVC Word Worksheets

  • Show your child the visual directions to look at the picture, read each word, and dot the correct word.
  • If your child tends to rush or guess, side beside them and listen to them read each word.
  • Give your child a dot marker and let them read!

Grab the Dot the CVC Word Worksheets in the Printable Parents’ Shop or on Teachers Pay Teachers .

CVC Color by Number Worksheets

Do you remember color by number from when you were a kid? Instead of following a number code, your child colors according to CVC Words.

Using CVC Color By Number Worksheets

  • Start by helping your child color the crayons the correct colors.
  • Then help your child identify each picture.
  • Explain your child will read the CVC words and color it following the code.
  • If desired, used the CVC mapping worksheet that accompanies each worksheet. Like the Word Mapping worksheets above, this helps your child learn to read fast.

These CVC Color by Number Worksheets are available:

  • Halloween Color by CVC on Teachers Pay Teachers
  • Thanksgiving Color by CVC or on Teachers Pay Teachers

Get your child reading with these CVC worksheets and word family activities.  Designed to support phonics in kindergarten, these CVC worksheets and activities include everything you need bridge your instruction from letter sounds to phoneme segmentation and building fluency.

What are CVC Word Families?

CVC word families, also known as phonograms, are groups of words that share the same rime, but have different onsets.

An onset is the initial sound of a word, and a rime is the vowel and consonant(s) that follow.  The et word family, for example, would consist of words such as wet, get, set, bet, jet, etc.

After learning to identify and produce letter sounds, exposure to cvc worksheets and cvc activities will help build phonological awareness and decoding skills – both very important for reading fluency in kindergarten and first grade.

When are CVC Word Families Taught?

CVC word families are introduced after mastery of the alphabet letters and sounds.

As a kindergarten teacher, I focused heavily on cvc words, phoneme segmentation, and word families during second half of the school year.  More intense word family instruction is carried throughout the first grade.  I created CVC word family printable resources, and CVC word games ,  as a supplemental to our weekly word family instruction and assessments.

CVC Decodable Books

The cvc decodable books are excellent for guided reading, mini-lessons, and shared reading lessons.  The text is large, which helps with concepts of print, such as tracking print and pointing to the words.  The pictures are simple and clear of clutter, to help the readers apply reading strategies, such as using the pictures when stuck on a word.

Revisit the word family books throughout the week.  Let’s look at a simple schedule for revisiting the books to build repetition and fluency. This schedule does not need be on consecutive days.  You can do these activities back or back, or choose to skip days in between.

Day 1: Do a book walk, and build vocabulary when talking about the pictures.  Then, echo read with the kiddos.

Day 2:   Ask students to recall the word family words from the book (net, vet, etc).  Do a shared reading.  Then, have the students highlight the word family word on each page.

Day 3: Have the kiddos do partner reading and read to self during your Daily 5 reading block.

At the end of the week, I allowed my students to take the books home to read to their family, or keep them in their book boxes in the classroom. I change out my book boxes from year to year.  I have used both magazine holders  and ziploc resealable bags as storage for all of their decodable books.  Both, were great storage solutions for the classroom.

CVC Word Cards

The word family picture cards were displayed on  my ELA focus wall at the start of each week.

Word Family House

After introducing the word cards, the kids write the words on the My ___ Word Family House cvc worksheet.  I would send this home on Mondays.  This way, they could show their family what the words are for the week – just in case the parents missed the newsletter.

CVC Picture and Word Cards

These cvc picture and word cards are great for a pocket chart activity, early-finisher task, morning activity box, or take-home activity. Each word card has the same color border as it’s matching picture – excellent for self-checking center.

If you’re looking for a quick and simple CVC matching game, this free resource is perfect!

Write and Illustrate CVC Words

The “Write and Illustrate” cvc worksheet is good for shared writing, mini-lessons, centers, and homework.  Students pick any one of the 5 focus words, write it in the box at the top, then write a sentence using that word. When done, they draw a picture to match the sentence.

CVC Sound Boxes

The leveled “Sound Boxes” cvc worksheets are excellent for phoneme segmentation. Students say the word, tap the sound boxes to segment the word, then write the word.

Building CVC Words

Students use the letter tiles on the right to make 3 words from the list of 5 focus words. When done, they draw a picture to represent one of the words.  Then, either a peer or the teacher has to guess the picture.

This reinforces using detail when illustrating, and the kids get a kick out of trying to draw SO good that they don’t even have to write the word.

CVC Word Family Match-up

Word Family Match-up goes beyond the 5 focus cvc words for the week.  This cvc worksheet builds visual discrimination, phoneme segmentation, and accuracy.  Students read the cvc words, then draw a line to the word on the right.

CVC Assessments

Finally, at the end of the week, I assessed each student individually on the 5 Word Family focus words.

You could administer the cvc reading assessment as a whole class, but I prefer one-on-one assessments to assure accuracy, and to be able to watch/listen to their thoughts (mumbles) as they practiced phoneme segmentation and blending.

For the cvc writing assessment, the teacher says the word for each picture, then the student writes the word independently.  There is a section for notes at the bottom – great to communicate/document and concerns or patterns observed.

Sometimes, you also want simple CVC words worksheets to print and use in a multi setting classroom with students with different abilities and needs. These printable CVC Activity Sheets target a number of skills.

If you’re looking to re-use the same sheet within your centers year on year, I LOVE laminating them and sometimes hole punching the mats and adding them to binders. Amazon has a HUGE set of laminating pouches for a steal. I always stock up on them to use throughout the year.

This printable read and cover game with groundhogs is perfect for preschoolers and kindergarten kids. Just print the mats and the matching words, have the kids read the words on the cards and find the matching CVC word on the mat. They will then add it to cover the ‘groundhog’.

They continue this until all CVC words are covered. Grab this printable at the bottom of this post.
