T-Mobile for Business puts the spotlight on small businesses across the country

t-mobile-for-small-business-plans

Earlier today, T-Mobile for Business revealed three new small business plans under the name Business Unlimited. In addition to these new plans, T-Mobile for Business has announced its new fixed wireless internet, Facebook Advertising on Us with digital advertising, and digital marketing resources exclusively for small businesses. This is T-Mobile’s way of helping the small business owners cope as they go through the economical effects of the pandemic.

Here is more information on these new developments:

T-Mobile Business Unlimited Plans

These are the three small business plans that T-Mobile for Business has unveiled today. As of this writing, these are the only small business plans available in the country.

  • Business Unlimited Select $25/line/month – This plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and 50GB of “Premium Data”, 5GB high-speed mobile hotspot; unlimited texting and 2G data overseas; and unlimited talk, text and 2G data in Canada and Mexico. The plan, however, reduces the speed during times of network congestion.
  • Business Unlimited Advanced $30/line/month – This plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and 100GB of “Premium Data”, 40GB high-speed mobile hotspot, 1 hour of Gogo In-Flight Wi-Fi; unlimited texting and 2G data overseas; unlimited talk, text and 5G high-speed data in Canada and Mexico; HD video streaming; and Microsoft 365 on Us.
  • Business Unlimited Ultimate $40/line/month – This plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and “Premium Data”, 100GB high-speed mobile hotspot, 1 hour of Gogo In-Flight Wi-Fi; 4K video streaming; Microsoft 365 on Us; and 2x faster data internationally (256Kbps).

T-Mobile Small Business Internet

The need to stay online is greatly experienced by small businesses. Thankfully, T-Mobile for Business has introduced a way to address this need with its new fixed wireless internet service that costs $60/month with AutoPay and no annual contracts. It also doesn’t include any caps or overage penalties.

Once you sign up for this service, T-Mobile will ship a state-of-the-art Nokia 5G router to your business location, included in your monthly price with no added equipment fees. You can then perform the installation in minutes, without the need to pay for hookup fees. The service also comes with access to a team of dedicated experts who you can call whenever you need them.

For a limited time period, T-Mobile for Business is running a promotion on this service. When you sign up for the service between June 1st and June 30th, you can enjoy $10 off on the monthly rate. This means that you will only have to pay $50/month (with AutoPay) throughout the duration of the qualifying line. You can learn more about this offer here .

Facebook Advertising on Us

T-Mobile knows that in order to help your business succeed, you need to take things to social media. And one way you can do that is by doing ads the right way. This is why T-Mobile for Business has teamed up with Facebook experts to help improve your business’ digital marketing strategy.

The partnership gives small businesses three one-on-one consultations with a Facebook marketing expert. It also gives access to educational resources and thought leadership content to help you make the most out of your Facebook advertising strategies.

Not only that, every small business on T-Mobile with three or more lines will get $200 in digital advertising to use to market their business on Facebook and Instagram’s platform.

T-Mobile for Business’ Opportunity Sweepstakes

Lastly, T-Mobile for Business is running an Opportunity Sweepstakes for small businesses throughout the country.

When you join, you have a chance to win a 5G makeover for your business. You can be among the winners of the following:

  • Six small businesses will win a 5G smartphone or tablet
  • Five small businesses will win a package of five 5G devices
  • Two small businesses will win a full 5G makeover with five 5G smartphones, a 5G tablet, and $5000 to spend on anything

You can join this sweepstakes between June 1st and July 16th. For more information, visit this page .

These new developments will be available starting June 1st. To kick off its launch, T-Mo will be hosting a Facebook Live conversation with FUBU founder & CEO/ABC’s Shark Tank, Daymond John and T-Mobile for Business’ EVP, Mike Katz. The talk will take place virtually on June 1st at 11:00am PT. You can learn more about this here .

New T-Mobile Small Business Plans – Business Unlimited Ultimate Smartphone Plan with 100GB Mobile Hotspot Data

Posted on: May 25, 2021 / In: News Stories / By: Liz Pfleghardt-Chafik Leave a Comment

Key Points:

  • T-Mobile will introduce a new line of T-Mobile Small Business plans on June 1
  • The top-tier Business Unlimited Ultimate plan will include 100GB of high speed mobile hotspot date starting at $85 for a single line
  • T-Mobile Small Business Plans are designed for phone use only

T-Mobile announced an update to their line-up of small business phone plans, available June 1st, 2021. The new plans are similarly priced to their equivalent consumer Magenta plans, but offer increased amounts of high speed personal mobile hotspot data.

Of note is the new Business Unlimited Ultimate plan, which will include both LTE and 5G unlimited premium data, and 100GB of high speed mobile hotspot data.

In addition, T-Mobile has also announced a business internet plan for $60, which is not mobile, but is instead similar to the fixed home internet service  but sold to businesses. It's also on a one month introductory promotion for $10 off.

New Small Business Plan Line Up

tmobile logo

Previously, T-Mobile's business-based plan lineup included two plans - Magenta for Business and Magenta MAX for Business. Their lineup now includes three plans: Business Unlimited Select, Business Unlimited Advanced, and Business Unlimited Ultimate.

These plans are designated for use in smartphones only, and they all come with unlimited talk and text.

Business Unlimited Ultimate

This plan includes unlimited 4G/LTE and 5G data on device, with no network management. It also includes 100GB of high speed mobile hotspot data per line.

The price for a single line is $85, with discounts for each additional line added - bringing the average price to as low as $40/line.

Streaming is set at 480p, but is available in 4K ultra-high definition.

5GB of high-speed data is available for each line for use in Canada and Mexico, followed by unlimited data usage at 256kbps. As with all T-Mobile plans, majority and activation of data usage needs to be in the U.S.

Microsoft 365 productivity tools are offered as a perk for each line.

tmobile small business plans table

Business Unlimited Advanced

This plan includes unlimited 4G/LTE and 5G data on device, and is subject to network management at 100GB of use. It also includes 40GB of high speed mobile hotspot data per line.

The price for a single line is $70, with discounts available for additional lines.

Streaming is set at 480p, but is available in high definition (HD).

5GB of high-speed data is available for use in Canada and Mexico, followed by unlimited data usage at 128kbps. As with all T-Mobile plans, majority and activation of data usage needs to be in the U.S.

Business Unlimited Select

This plan includes unlimited 4G/LTE and 5G data on device, and is subject to network management at 50GB of use. It also includes 5GB of high speed mobile hotspot data per line.

The price for a single line is $60, with discounts available for additional lines.

Streaming is set at 480p (SD).

No high-speed data is available for use in Canada and Mexico, but it does include unlimited data at 128Kbps.

Microsoft 365 is not included on this tier of the plan.

Business Plan Qualifications

A business plan with T-Mobile requires a U.S. Tax ID number or EIN. Plans are also available to sole proprietors with only a U.S. social security number (SSN). Frustratingly, but much like AT&T and Verizon, T-Mobile pretty much forces you to talk with a 'local business sales representative' to get more information or establish an account.

Business Account Perks

Along with pricing discounts, business accounts with T-Mobile offer some different perks than consumer accounts.

t mobile business facebook

Microsoft 365  and Gogo In-Flight WiFi will be included with Ultimate and Advanced tiers of Unlimited Business plans.

Other T-Mobile Business Plans

The 'Unlimited Business' line-up detailed above is not T-Mobile's only business offering. The company also offers tiered-data  Simple Choice plans, as well as T-Mobile WFX Plans .

The new Business Ultimate Unlimited plan is priced identically to the consumer-based Magenta MAX plan at $85 for a single line. However, Magenta MAX only includes 40GB of mobile hotspot data, whereas the Business Ultimate Unlimited plan includes 100GB.

In order to have access to 100GB of mobile hotspot data for the consumer-based Magenta MAX plan, you would need to add hotspot data for an additional $35 - bringing the plan total to $120 for a single line - making the Business Ultimate Unlimited plan a great deal in comparison.

Top Pick Star

These plans are designated for use in phones only, they are not compatible with use in a hotspot or other data device. Previously T-Mobile did have the option to add tablets to Business lines, but we do not yet know if that will also be an option with these new plans. Once the plans are officially released we will update this story if that information becomes available.

Fixed network to a mobile flat rate

The fixed network to mobile flat rates option lets you make free calls to any mobile phone from your landline. It applies to up to eight voice channels. You can reach your customers at any time and enjoy inexpensive telephony with low basic fees.

If you want to save yourself from an expensive fixed network contract, then a mobile flat rate is suitable for your business. As a business customer with this service, you can enjoy the following benefits.

  • 5G speeds are faster than DSL
  • It includes unlimited calls and roaming

What type of T-Mobile business mobile plan is right for your business?

The development of new technologies and the growth of the mobile internet are leading to new forms of communication. To be available for your customers at all times, you need a strong partner who can guarantee fast and reliable connections.

Business Unlimited Select

T-Mobile Business Phone Plans - Subsidized Devices

The subsidized devices may require an initial down payment

Business Unlimited Ultimate

“Ultimate” is the largest T-Mobile Business package in the US. It boasts unlimited text and talk, unlimited 5G and/or 4G connections as well as +100 GB of high-speed data. With unlimited premium data, you can be sure not to be slowed down if your data connection has been exceeded.

You get an overview of your costs thanks to monthly billing in advance. So there are no unpleasant surprises when you receive your bill at the end of the month. Now you can use your company smartphone for phone calls and messages without any worries about the costs.

Mobile security and MDM software

Tip: With a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution, you can keep an eye on the status of all your devices and protect yourself against any threats or vulnerabilities.

T-Mobile phone plans: SIM-only and BYOD

Naturally, T-Mobile also offers SIM-only phone plans without a subsidized device. At Everphone, we generally recommend to keep phone plans and devices separate in organizations. This usually allows for more flexibility in selecting the phone plan, more cost transparency and overall lower costs and expenditures.

T-Mobile business mobile plan vs. Verizon business mobile plans

If you’re looking to get started with a new mobile phone plan, one of your first decisions is to choose what type of plan you want. Two popular options in the US are T-Mobile business mobile plans and Verizon business customers’ phone plans . And of course, there is also AT & T and Sprint.

All of these carriers and their business phone plans have their upsides and downsides. For example, Verizon business customers’ phone plans are known for their flexibility, but they may not offer what you need if you’re looking for a specific set of features.

On the other hand, T-Mobile business mobile plans might be more limited regarding what features you can pick and choose. Still, they offer an excellent value for your money with included features that might otherwise be add-ons with other providers.

If you’re trying to decide which plan is best for your needs, there’s no single correct answer. You’ll have to weigh your budget and priorities against the different types of plans available on the market today.

T-Mobile business mobile plan-data plans with an end device

A data plan is the amount of data your business can use each month for online roaming, streaming and browsing. Data plans come in many shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: they are designed to keep your company connected to the internet.

When you select a data plan, you’re choosing how much data your company will be able to use each month. Some companies may only need 200 MB/month, while others require 1 TB/month or more. You choose a T-Mobile business mobile plan that gives you enough data to power your business without overpaying for something you don’t need.

Some companies offer unlimited plans, but these plans can be fairly expensive—and if you don’t need unlimited data, they aren’t worth the extra cost. If you aren’t sure how much data your company needs, talk to an expert! They’ll be able to help you figure out what kind of plan is best for your business’s needs and budget.

DRAFT: REWRITE: The 5 Best Business Cell Phone Plans of 2023

Teltik

Business.org’s 5 best business cell phone plans

At&t: best full-featured plans.

Looking for a broad choice of bells and whistles? As a telecom behemoth, AT&T has plenty of cell phone features and packages to offer businesses—around 20 plan variations, small to large. All plans include free US roaming, unlimited talk and text messages, as well as unlimited texting outside of the country. Basic features like call forwarding, voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, and conference calling also come standard with all AT&T business cell phone plans, along with bring-your-own-phone support.

AT&T's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Business Unlimited plan prices start at $30 a month per line when you sign up for 6+ lines, or $60 a month for one line. Data is unlimited, but speeds may slow down after reaching the GB included in each plan.

AT&T business plans can also accommodate up to 10 lines per account, and they come fully loaded with perks like AT&T ActiveArmor SM mobile security and Video Management. Video Management automatically optimizes streaming video on your phone to 480p so you can watch webinars on the go without dealing with a blurry picture.

Each plan also includes a decent array of iOS and Android smartphone options and even a few good old flip phones. Users can save money when bundling AT&T-owned DIRECTV services (because, again, telecom behemoth). Military veterans can also qualify for a 25% discount on Business Unlimited plans.

Users are eligible for a discount if they elect for autopay and paperless billing, but this discount is only applied until after two pay periods. We don't know why the discount cannot be applied earlier in the billing process, but we do find it frustrating.

T-Mobile: Best flexible plans

Not sure exactly what you’ll need in a mobile plan besides future adaptability? T-Mobile, the third-largest wireless service in the US, offers three business plans, all packed with unique features that set T-Mobile apart from the rest. The German-owned company has also earned a reputation for stellar customer service and was the first to eliminate annual contracts (an idea that stuck—none of the plans reviewed on this page require contracts). In April 2018, the company announced its intention to merge with Sprint under the T-Mobile banner.

T-Mobile's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *Price available with 6+ lines

All of T-Mobile’s Business cell phone plans offer the same basic features:

  • Unlimited talk and text
  • Unlimited 5G and 4G LTE data on their network
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot
  • Scam Shield
  • Unlimited calling and texting to Mexico & Canada
  • Unlimited video streaming

In addition, all T-Mobile Business plans include DIGITS, an app that allows you to access up to five phone numbers on a single device. That means you could answer calls to your work number and personal number on one device—no more packing two phones in your bag every day. DIGITS also lets you share your phone number across multiple devices, so you can answer on your phone, smartwatch, tablet, or computer.

T-Mobile’s Business plans cover up to 12 lines. If you need more than 12 lines, you’ll need to sign up for the Enterprise Phone Plan (13+ lines). This includes a fixed rate of $285 per month for 13 lines, plus $25 per month for each additional line.

T-Mobile plans also allow bring-your-own-device convenience, or you can buy phones upfront with a single payment (there are nearly 40 iOS and Android phones to choose from).

I couldn't find solid info verifying this pricing so I'm not sure if it's still accurate

Now that T-Mobile and Sprint have been merged for almost six months, some significant changes have taken effect. T-Mobile’s website is now the only place businesses can sign up for Sprint or T-Mobile business phone accounts.

Sprint still has an active business website for previous users but all new plans will be sold by T-Mobile on its website.

Verizon: Best growing business plans

Serving over 150 million customers, Verizon isn’t just big, it’s BIG. Such a mobile mammoth might not seem like the obvious choice for a small business, but for what it lacks in a personalized customer service reputation, Verizon more than makes up for by offering every cell phone feature there is, as well as dominant US, and near-dominant global, coverage. Like McDonald’s and Marvel movies, Verizon is everywhere.

Verizon's business cell phone plans

Data as of 2/6/24. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *With 5+ lines

While business owners can get business cell phone plans with limited data, we recommend choosing an unlimited plan if you have multiple employees (or do a lot of work via cell phone).

Verizon’s Business Unlimited cell phone plans are scalable for multiple employees. With plans starting at just $30 per line, Verizon Business Unlimited plans are an attractive option, whether you’re running a tiny company with no expansion plans, a medium-sized business with an eye toward growth, or a large enterprise with heavy cell phone requirements.

Verizon Business Unlimited Plus and Pro plans also include a TravelPass (2–4 days per month), so you can do business around the world. Each plan also includes unlimited calling and texting to Mexico and Canada.

Verizon doesn’t skimp on device choices either. There are nearly 100 iOS and Android phones and tablets available—including the Verizon Orbic Speed, a mobile hotspot device that can connect 10 devices to an 802.11 ac Wi-Fi network.

If your company requires truly “unlimited” cell phone service and scalability to grow, and is in the position to pay for functionality with frills, Verizon Business Unlimited is the way to go. Bare-bones operations, however, might want to look elsewhere.

Each of our recommendations has its strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes the most difficult part about finding a phone system is determining exactly what you need and don't need. The best place to start is separating your needs between installing a new system, replacing a system, or expanding an existing system.

If you are having trouble sorting out exactly what your phone needs are, use this tool to help you understand what the best options are for your unique needs.

MintMobile: Most affordable plans

We are sure you’ve seen the commercials with Ryan Reynolds talking about this phone carrier business with a fox logo called Mint Mobile. In fact, a lot of Mint customers were drawn to Mint because of Ryan Reynolds's Hollywood looks, but that’s not the only thing Mint has to offer.

Mint is inexpensive and transparent, compared to other cell phone carriers with hidden fees and seemingly random regulations.

MintMobile's business cell phone plans

These are the prices for new customers and will last up to three months. After the third month, you are eligible to sign up for a 3, 6, or 12-month contract on one of the tiered plans, all $35/mo/user or under, which is astronomically less than other providers.

MintMobile is no fuss, and you really do feel like you must be tricking the rest of the world with its pricing. The only issue is that MintMobile is an online company, and coverage is not completely everywhere yet. There are still some coverage gaps in the West, namely Nevada, Idaho, and Arizona. If you live east of the Rocky Mountains, you are good to go!

Teltik: Best perks plans

If you’re a strapped startup, New Jersey’s Teltik can get you up and running on the cheap. Teltik is a reseller service operating on T-Mobile’s 4G LTE and 5G network, meaning it can offer the reliability and reach of a giant provider at smaller-company prices. Teltik also has the advantage of being completely US-based, with 24/7 local customer service that’s not outsourced overseas.

Teltik's business cell phone plans

3 more (non-business) cell phone plans reviewed by business.org.

Teltik appears to have a dozen plans, but they’re mostly just variations of the essential plan that offers all the expected basics. Not coincidentally, the features mirror those of T-Mobile, as they’re on the same network.

The most basic plan starts at $20 a month and includes unlimited calling and texting, mobile hotspot service, and unlimited data—with a 2 GB cap on 5G speeds (meaning your speed gets throttled to 128 Kbps if you use more than 2 GB of data in a month). From there, you can upgrade your plan to include more 4G or 5G data and more mobile hotspot data. Upgraded plans cost anywhere from $30 to $40 per month, and they all include one cloud-phone VoIP line—perfect for small businesses looking to save on all their telecommunications needs.

One distinctly entertaining feature (pun intended) of Teltik’s business plans? You get unlimited media streaming from over 40 music services (including Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music) and more than 100 video services (including YouTube, Netflix, and any other channel you can think of). That means you can stream as much TV as you want without it eating into your data. It’s almost as if Teltik doesn’t want you to get any work done.

Another thing you need to know: Teltik doesn’t sell phones. Instead, the company operates on a strict bring-your-own-device basis. Any unlocked phone will work with its network, as will any T-Mobile device, of course. However, you will have to spend $10 plus shipping and handling to buy a new SIM card for each of your devices (unless they’ve already got brand-new, unused T-Mobile SIM cards).

Boost Mobile

The takeaway

Assess your company’s current cell phone usage and projected future needs before diving into any plan. What looks like a great deal could turn out to be more than you actually need—or you may have initially underestimated your business’s cell phone requirements. Also, if your company has both cell phone and regular office phone needs, look into bundling. The larger telecom providers offer both types of phone coverage, and bundling services is an easy way to save money in the long run.

Don’t want to carry around separate phones for work and personal calls? With the right VoIP service, you don’t have to. Check out our favorite business VoIP providers to see which ones offer on-the-go business phone capabilities.

Business cell phone plan FAQs

If you have several employees working outside of the office on a regular basis, desk-bound phones obviously aren’t going to work for them. Some may be only calling and texting while others will be checking email, using GPS navigation, and accessing the internet for work, but a cell phone is a must for employees in the field.

If you’re a one-person operation accountable to only yourself, you could get by with a personal cell plan. Keeping track of multiple employees’ hours, data, and providers, however, would be an extra headache you don’t need. For streamlining and collaboration purposes, a business cell phone plan would be the easier route.

Most of the plans we’ve reviewed here offer unlimited data—domestically, at least—so hitting the data ceiling won’t likely be an issue. But if you want to forecast how much data your business uses every month, or want to figure out how much premium data you’ll need, providers make data plan estimators available on their websites. Or you could use a third-party calculator app.

BYOD stands for bring your own device . Another common term is BYOP for bring your own phone . This means that employees are using their personal phones, tablets, or laptops on their own carrier plans for work or that they’ve put those devices on the company’s plan. The upside? It’s less expensive than buying devices. The downside? Extra security concerns.

In the annoying absence of Wi-Fi, you can use a cell phone signal to connect a wireless device to the internet by switching on the mobile hotspot option and simply treating it like a Wi-Fi router. For multiple device connections, a dedicated hotspot (such as Verizon’s Orbic Speed ) can provide a faster, and more stable, connection.

Get the 5G data you need without wasting cash on features you don't

The best T-Mobile phone plans give you access to the carrier’s massive 5G network with enough data to actually use it, while avoiding paying for features you don’t need.

T-Mobile’s plans, for the most part, offer unlimited data with access to all of the carrier’s 5G bands with differences coming down mainly to premium data, hotspot data, and plan extras. If you’re not careful, it’s easy to end up paying for a lot of extras you never use while trying to get the data you do.

If you’ve been looking at all of the best cell phone plans available, there are plenty of carriers using the T-Mobile network, but if you want T-Mobile’s best speeds and highest priority data, you’ll want one of the carrier’s postpaid plans, so you can use one of the best T-Mobile phones with all the speed and data you need.

T-Mobile logo

T-Mobile Go5G

T-mobile essentials saver, t-mobile essentials, t-mobile go5g next, t-mobile magenta 55+, t-mobile go5g plus, best plans to use on t-mobile.

Tons of data with multi-line savings

Go5G is T-Mobile’s sensible middle child with plenty of data for the vast majority of users, data for when you travel, and high-quality streaming at 720p resolution. Taxes and fees are included, and with multi-line discounts, this plan is one of T-Mobile’s most competitive.

  • Plenty of premium data for most at 100GB
  • Up to 720p streaming for videos
  • Taxes and fees are included
  • Videos stream at 480p by default
  • No phone upgrade perks
  • ScamShield Premium not included

Unlimited data plans offer some peace of mind in that they’re not going to suddenly leave you stranded without a connection, but the fact of the matter is that most of us don’t need all that much data. For even a relatively heavy user, T-Mobile’s Go5G plan with 100GB premium data, and unlimited data at a slightly lower priority after that, is plenty. You get 5G speeds as fast as T-Mobile can deliver them for the first 100GB of usage each month, and if you manage to use it all, you still get solid 5G speeds with more variation depending on how crowded the network is.

Besides that, the plan comes with 15GB of high-speed hotspot data so you can stream and download on your laptop or tablet without paying for another plan. This isn’t a ton of data, but if you spend most of your time on your home Wi-Fi connection, it can be plenty to keep you connected on the go. Not only that, but after that 15GB of high-speed data is used, you still get unlimited 3G speeds which is enough for messaging, light browsing, and email.

Taxes and fees are included with this plan, so the price you see is the price you pay, which is a breath of fresh air on a postpaid plan. There’s also a $5 autopay discount bringing the price down to $75 for a single line. The best way to save is to bring as many lines as possible, with T-Mobile offering the third line free for new customers. If you bring two or three lines, Go5G comes in at $130 per month, with four lines costing $155 per month.

Plenty of domestic data for most

T-Mobile’s cheapest postpaid plan is called Essentials Saver and it’s a strong value for customers with one or two lines. You get a solid 50GB of premium data and even 3G-speed hotspot usage. Video stream quality takes a cut to SD quality, but for many people, this is a worthwhile sacrifice on a phone screen.

  • Solid 50GB of premium data
  • Cheap pricing for one or two lines
  • Full 5G access
  • Taxes and fees not includes
  • Video streaming quality low at SD
  • Not a great deal for families with three or more lines

T-Mobile’s Essentials Saver plan is its cheapest for one or two lines, but it still comes with a respectable 50GB of premium 5G data and 3G-speed hotspot data. That 50GB of data seems a lot lower than the other plans at T-Mobile, but this is one of this plan’s most minor sacrifices in real-world usage since quite a few people don’t need that much data at all, and your home Wi-Fi usage doesn’t count towards your data usage. One thing to note is that, unlike Verizon and AT&T, all T-Mobile customers get access to the full 5G network including low-band, mid-band, and high-band spectrum.

This plan lacks nearly all international features except for the ability to text international numbers from home. Videos stream at SD resolutions, which will look a bit blurry on a large phone screen but won’t bother many people.

Keep in mind that this plan doesn’t include taxes and fees, you’ll be looking at a few more dollars per month on top of the sticker price. It’s also worth noting that these fees could increase, and you’re responsible for the difference. Still, there’s an autopay discount which brings the price down to $50 per month for a single line and $80 for two lines. If you’re bringing three or more lines, however, the standard Essentials plans start to make more sense.

Save even more with multiple lines

If you’re bringing three or more lines to T-Mobile and want the cheapest data you can get, T-Mobile’s Essential plan is the best bet. It gets 50GB of premium data, 3G-speed hotspot data, and even a few international features like usage in Mexico and Canada.

  • Low price for multi-line accounts
  • Taxes and fees not included

If you’re considering the cheap Essentials Saver plan but have more than a couple of lines, the standard Essentials plan makes more sense. While pricier at one or two lines for not a lot more, thanks to a third-line free promotion and special four-line pricing for four to six lines, it’s the better deal for families. Compared to the above Essential Saver plan, you get a handful of flat-rate international options added in but, most importantly, four lines come in at just $100 per month with five lines at $125.

This plan still has 50GB of premium data with unlimited 3G-speed hotspot data. Video streams are still unimpressive at SD quality, but fine enough for the kids watching 12 hours of Roblox videos on a road trip. While both Essentials and Essentials Saver can send international texts for free, Essentials comes with usage in Mexico and Canada, and Simple Global flat-rate international calling and testing.

Upgrade your phone every year

If you like upgrading your phone with the latest model every single year, T-Mobiles Go5G Next is a good plan for you. With this plan, you’re upgrade-ready every year and will have access to the same offers as new customers. If you upgrade every year, this plan could be worth the premium price.

  • Upgrade-ready every year with full discounts
  • Unlimited premium data
  • Apple TV+, Netflix, and Hulu are included
  • Very expensive
  • Hotspot data is lower than premium plans from other carriers

T-Mobile’s top premium plan for heavy users is called Go5G Next and it comes with unlimited premium data, but only really makes sense for those who want to always be using the latest tech. Go5G Next’s main feature is being upgrade-ready every single year compared to the typical two and three-year payment plan cycles on most other plans. Besides that, T-Mobile also gives customers on this plan the same phone offers as new customers, so they can take advantage of deals like buy one get one free credits.

Besides the phone upgrades, Go5G Next has all of T-Mobile’s best features including unlimited premium 5G data, 50GB of hotspot data, and taxes and fees included. While the 50GB of hotspot data is ample for most people, it’s worth mentioning that Verizon and AT&T’s top plans offer 60GB of hotspot data. Luckily, on-phone usage is basically unrestricted with unlimited premium 5G data and 4K streaming video quality. If you’re traveling internationally, you get 5GB of high-speed data in another country and in-flight Wi-Fi on the way there on equipped plans from Alaskan Airlines, American, Delta, and United.

Taxes and fees are included on this plan, which is a nice touch given its price, which starts at $100 for a single line, going up to $170 for two lines, $180 for three lines, and $225 for four lines. There’s also a $35 activation fee when you upgrade your phone, so some extra money will need to come out of pocket. That being said, Apple TV+, Netflix, and Hulu are all included in the price, so at least you’ll have plenty to stream as soon as you finish setting up your new phone .

Don't forget your 55+ discount

Most T-Mobile plans are available at a discount for seniors, but the older Magenta plan still offers the most compelling package with 100GB of premium data, 5GB of hotspot data, and a handful of streaming perks.

  • Plenty of data with 100GB of premium data
  • Unlimited international usage with 5GB of high-speed data
  • Available with up to four lines
  • Videos stream at 480p
  • Only 5GB of hotspot data

If you’ve just turned 55, you’re not old yet, but that doesn’t mean you need to turn down discounts. The Magenta 55+ plan is a solid deal for seniors who still want high-speed data and have up to four lines to bring to their account. Based on T-Mobile's older, and still available, Magenta plan, you get 100GB of premium data, 5GB of high-speed hotspot data, and taxes and fees are included. Videos are limited to SD quality, which isn’t too big of a deal for someone with reading glasses.

Netflix with ads is included for free, so you can stream shows at home or on your phone. Six months of Apple TV+ is also included, which is plenty of time to binge-watch a few shows. If you fly somewhere, you get four full in-flight Wi-Fi settings on supported planes at Alaskan, American, Delta, and United flights. Once abroad, you get unlimited usage with 5GB of high-speed data in a handful of countries including Canada and Mexico with 256Kbps speeds in 210+ other countries.

T-Mobile offers a 55+ version of most of its plans, but Magenta still offers some of its best value, especially if you have two or more lines. Unlike some other carriers, T-Mobile allows up to four lines on its Magenta and higher 55+ plans, so you can still save with your family or friends. With four lines, Magenta 55+ comes in at $20 less than Magenta, so it’s worth taking advantage of this discount.

Streaming services included

If you watch a lot of streaming video, you need a plan that can keep up with high-quality video, and enough premium data to keep it locked at HD resolutions. This plan also comes with Apple TV+ and Netflix included so you’re ready to stream right off the bat.

  • Video streaming at 4K resolutions
  • Apple TV+ and Netflix are included
  • Phone upgrades every two years
  • Hulu isn't included
  • Quite expensive for one line

If most of the videos you stream are in an app on your phone, you want a plan with plenty of streaming perks and a phone that can handle it. Go5G Plus isn’t T-Mobile’s top plan, but it isn’t far off with unlimited premium data and 50GB of high-speed hotspot data. It comes with Netflix Standard with ads, and Apple TV+, so you’ve got two apps full of shows ready to stream as soon as you get set up. With up to 4K video streaming supported on the plan, you’ll be able to get the most out of these streaming apps on your phone’s screen.

Like Go5G Next, you also get the same phone offers as new customers and you’re upgrade-ready in two years. If you choose one of the best Android phones , you can easily get two good years out of it without significant slowdown. With Go5G Plus, you can be sure you have a phone with the latest features and full support for the 5G network.

Go5G Plus costs $90 per month for a single line with autopay discounts. For two and three lines, it costs $150 per month thanks to a promotion making the third line free. Finally, four lines bring it to $185 per month. Keep in mind that if you get a new phone and take advantage of the biannual upgrade, you’ll pay a $35 activation fee with the new phone.

Make the most of T-Mobile 5G with the right plan

T-Mobile is one of the best overall carriers thanks to its massive 5G network allowing it to be competitive on data and coverage. It’s not perfect, with activation fees for new phones, which felt out of favor even when Sprint was still around, but as a one-time fee for phone upgrades, it’s tolerable.

One thing T-Mobile excels at is discounts for military members and veterans, first responders, and 55+ customers. If you’re in the military, a veteran, or first responder, the top pick, Go5G, is $15 cheaper for a single line and $35 cheaper if you’ve got four lines. If you qualify, thank you — and this is definitely a discount you should remember to activate. When it comes to 55+ plans, be sure to make sure the 55+ version is the cheapest before signing up. For example, Go5G 55 is $5 more than Go5G with four lines thanks to the current promotion.

Overall, the best plan for most people is the Go5G plan. This plan comes with 100GB of premium data, which the vast majority of users won’t fully use, and unlimited data after that. Video streaming quality gets a bump to 720p, which should offer plenty of clarity on a phone screen. It comes with 10GB of high-speed data if you go to Mexico or Canada, so you don’t need to worry about getting another SIM if you go on vacation. With multi-line discounts and the third-line free promotions, Go5G can be the perfect choice.

Go5G is T-Mobile’s sensible middle child with plenty of data for the vast majority of users, data for when you travel, and high-quality streaming at 720p resolutions. Taxes and fees are included, and with multi-line discounts, this plan is one of T-Mobile’s most competitive.

How to Get Gemini Advanced, Google's Subscription-Only AI Chatbot

Smartphone sitting on a wooden table with the phrase Welcome to the Gemini era on the screen

Google just upgraded its AI chatbot. Access to the new Gemini Advanced chatbot is available right now through a monthly subscription to Google One, the company's cloud backup service.

With today's release, there's a new tier of Google One service called the AI Premium plan, which costs $20 per month; subscribe and you'll get the standard Google One benefits, plus access to a new chatbot powered by the Gemini Ultra 1.0 model.

That $20 monthly fee is the same price OpenAI charges for access to its GPT-4 model via ChatGPT Plus. Google previously offered a chatbot known as “Bard,” but the company has renamed its AI offerings as “Gemini.” Don’t want to pay for your AI tools? Google continues to offer its more basic chatbot, the Gemini Pro model, for free.

While aspects of Google’s Gemini Ultra model were shown off months ago in sometimes questionable demos , the juiced up version was not made available to the public during Gemini’s initial rollout . Now the more capable version has arrived.

Gemini Advanced, similar to OpenAI’s GPT-4, may be better at understanding the nuance and context of user prompts. It should also perform better at jobs like writing code when compared to previous large language models . Gemini Advanced is currently just designed for answering prompts in English, but additional languages are expected to receive support with future iterations.

Curious about trying out Google’s latest chatbot and wondering how the subscription plan compares to ChatGPT Plus ? Here’s everything you need to know about getting started with Gemini Advanced.

Instead of offering access through a stand-alone subscription, Google is making Gemini Advanced available as part of a new tier for Google One called “AI Premium.” If you don’t already have a Google account, you’ll need to create one before signing up to use the chatbot. If you do already subscribe to a Google One plan, you'll be able to upgrade to the new plan that includes chatbot access. Check out WIRED’s guide to Google One for a deeper dive into what’s included with the different tiers.

To upgrade to the new paid version of Gemini, make sure you’re logged into your Google account and go to the Gemini chatbot homepage . On the home screen for the AI tool, tap the hamburger icon in the top left corner. Then click Upgrade to Gemini Advanced . This will direct you to a new page to subscribe through Google One. The AI Premium plan currently costs $20 a month—Google offers a two-month free trial if you're unsure about it. Refresh your browser tab afterwards, and you’ll now see Gemini Advanced at the top of the page as your new, default chatbot experience.

Gemini Advanced is available through a smartphone app too, though Android owners are the first to receive access. Download the fresh Gemini app from the Google Play store to get started. On Android phones, you can also choose to switch your Google Assistant over to Gemini. Own an iPhone instead? You can still use Gemini Advanced through your mobile browser, but in-app access is not yet available. Rather than a custom app, Apple users can expect Google to release Gemini on iOS inside the standard Google app .

How does the subscription compare to what’s offered by OpenAI? With ChatGPT Plus, you get to use the impressive GPT-4 model and try out ChatGPT’s beta features before they are released to a wider audience. With Gemini Advanced, you get access to Google's latest AI model and new features as well as everything included with the Google One subscription. For $20 a month, you receive 2 terabytes of cloud storage, access to advanced photo editing features like Magic Eraser , and 10 percent back in credit for hardware purchases from the Google Store.

The company plans to roll out a Gemini integration with Gmail and Google Docs for AI Premium subscribers, but the exact release date for this feature is unknown. When WIRED previously tested Bard’s tricks in Gmail, the initial results were messy but showed promise. It will be interesting to see if a more powerful large language model improves the user experience of trying to find old emails in an overstuffed inbox.

Updated, February 8, 4pm EST: Added more upgrade guidance and context after the release of Gemini Advanced.

AT&T cellular service restored after daylong outage; cause still unknown

thumbnail

  • A cellular outage Thursday hit thousands of AT&T users in the United States, disrupting calls and text messages as well as emergency services in major cities including San Francisco.

About 58,000 incidents were reported around noon ET, according to data from outage-tracking website Downdetector.com.

  • Shares of AT&T were down about 2% Thursday following the outages.

A cellular outage Thursday hit thousands of AT&T users in the United States, disrupting calls and text messages as well as emergency services in major cities including San Francisco. The company said service was restored to all affected customers shortly after 3 p.m. ET.

"Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future," the company said in a statement.

AT&T said late Thursday that based on an initial review, the outage was "caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack." The company will continue to assess the outage.

AT&T, which put up a website for system updates , did not say how many customers were affected by Thursday's outage. The FCC said on X that it was investigating the incident and was in contact with AT&T and safety authorities .

Shares of AT&T closed 2.41% lower Thursday.

Phones affected by the outage displayed zero service bars in the top right corner of the device or the letters SOS. Customers were still able to make calls by enabling Wi-Fi calling.

A spike in outages began around 4:00 a.m. ET and peaked at around 74,000 reported incidents at 8:30 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector.

The AT&T outage affected people's ability to reach emergency services by dialing 911, a post on social media platform X from the San Francisco Fire Department said.

"We are aware of an issue impacting AT&T wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 911)," the fire department said.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a post on X that the city could receive and make outbound 911 calls but that AT&T customers in the area had reported issues.

"We have received calls from AT&T customers that their cellular phones are in SOS mode. Please direct all inquiries to restore service to AT&T," Dickens said.

The Massachusetts State Police said that people were flooding their 911 center with calls trying to determine if the service worked from their cell phones.

"Please do not do this. If you can successfully place a non-emergency call to another number via your cell service then your 911 service will also work," the state police said in a post on X.

Users of Verizon and T-Mobile reported a few thousand outages each as of 10:00 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector.

The reports were likely due to calls made trying to connect with other networks, both companies said.

"Downdetector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks," T-Mobile said in an emailed statement.

AT&T says cell service fully restored after major outage disrupts its mobile network

Customer reports of at&t wireless outages peaked at over 73,000 around 8:15 a.m. texas cities were particularly hard hit..

The cellular outage hit all carriers, but especially Dallas-based AT&T.

Sitting outside AT&T’s Dallas headquarters in the company’s signature Discovery District, small business owner Roxie Reese had a moment to reflect on the disruptive morning she and thousands of other wireless customers nationwide awoke to Thursday.

Reese had a morning appointment and grabbed her cellphone in a rush.

“I didn’t realize until after I left my house that I had no service,” said Reese, owner and founder of DFW Lash University. “I made it to my destination but I didn’t know where I was going. So it made me run behind. It’s a reminder that phones are a resource I take for granted because when it’s not available, it definitely makes life harder.”

Shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, AT&T said it had fully restored wireless service to all customers, including the critical FirstNet network used by emergency services nationally. The FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security were reported to be investigating why wireless subscribers lost service.

“Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future,” the telecommunications giant said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News .

Reports of outages to AT&T’s mobile service started around 2 a.m. and meant many Americans were unable to place calls, send texts or access the internet when they awoke. By 8:15 a.m. Dallas time, over 73,000 AT&T customers in major cities like Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago had reported cellular outages to Downdetector.com , a website that tracks service problems by users.

In all, AT&T customers filed over 1.5 million outage reports on Downdetector.

The problem even cascaded to other cellular carriers whose customers were believed to be trying to reach AT&T users.

AT&T did not provide a reason for the system failure.

At the White House, national security spokesman John Kirby played down the possibility of a cyberattack.

”Right now, we’re being told that AT&T has no reason to think that this was a cybersecurity incident,” he told reporters at midday. “But … we won’t know until an investigation has been completed. It’s good that the vast majority of customers have had their service restored. Obviously, we’ve got to do spade work to figure out what happened.”

Bloomberg reported the federal government is investigating whether the outage was caused by a cyberattack, citing two anonymous U.S. officials familiar with the situation.

Kristen Hanich, director of research at Addison-based research firm Parks Associates, said any number of potential issues could have been the cause.

“It could be anything from authentication issues to hardware failure or cloud configuration errors or cyber or other reasons,” she said. “Time will tell, and we are closely monitoring the story.”

Texas cities appeared to be particularly hard hit.

AT&T is the dominant wireless carrier in Texas, with 34% of the market, according to Parks Associates. Nationally, AT&T ranks third behind Verizon and T-Mobile with a 22% market share. It has about 87 million wireless subscribers.

Besides the consumer impact, AT&T’s emergency response network, FirstNet, also suffered disruptions. CNN reported AT&T’s network had seen sporadic outages over the previous few days, including a temporary 911 outage in some parts of the southeastern U.S. Several local governments around the U.S. said Thursday’s outage disrupted services.

San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management said in a statement on X , Thursday morning its 911 center remained operational but that many AT&T customers were unable to reach the emergency line because of the outages. It suggested people call from a landline or find someone with a rival’s service to dial 911.

The outage didn’t have a major impact on North Texas police departments.

“The Dallas Police Department is aware of the reported outage and is monitoring the situation,” the department said in a statement. “The department has not been impacted by the reported outage.”

The department’s 911 communications and other systems were functional, the statement said.

Fort Worth police said on X that its 911 call center also wasn’t affected

We are aware that there is a cellular outage affecting AT&T and some other mobile customers. However, this outage has not affected the 911 Call Center. We are still available for your emergency needs. — Fort Worth Police (@fortworthpd) February 22, 2024

“We are still available for your emergency needs,” its post said.

Frisco police advised residents that even if a cellphone is showing SOS, it should still be able to call 911.

A nationwide service outage affecting multiple cell phone providers appears to be slowly resolving. Those with phones still showing SOS should be able to reach 9-1-1 if needed. Matt Zavadsky, a spokesperson with MedStar, which provides emergency medical services to Fort Worth and surrounding areas, said the organization’s FirstNet system “became intermittent/non-functional” about 2:30 a.m. That caused MedStar to lose the ability to see its units on its computer system and it couldn’t use automated navigation to calls.

During that time, MedStar used radio dispatching and map books in the ambulances instead.

Other major entities in North Texas and across the state reported normal operations Thursday. ERCOT spokeswoman Trudi Webster said the state’s electric grid was operating normally.

DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field also saw no impact. Autonomous trucking companies Aurora and Kodiak and public hospital system, Parkland Health, reported no disruptions as well.

Some retailers seemingly anticipated such a problem.

H-E-B spokeswoman Mabrie Jackson said the popular grocery store’s point of sales systems don’t depend on WiFi, but store employees were sent outside to curbside pickup spaces to help customers whose cell phones were inoperable.

Other carriers besides AT&T were affected. Cricket Wireless had over 11,000 outages, Downdetector.com reported. Verizon had about 3,000 outages and T-Mobile more than 1,000. Boost Mobile had about 450 outages.

Verizon and T-Mobile both reported their users encountered difficulties trying to connect with customers on affected networks.

“We did not experience an outage,” T-Mobile said in a statement. “Our network is operating normally.”

User reports on Downdetector about a T-Mobile outage, the company added, “is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks.”

Verizon said it also was unaffected.

“Verizon’s network is operating normally,” Verizon told CNN in a statement. “Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier. We are continuing to monitor the situation.”

Previous outages

It’s not the first time AT&T has suffered a widespread outage. In 2008, the company dealt with an extensive wireless internet failure in the U.S. Northeast. In that incident, a glitch in the way the company’s network was routing traffic was identified as the culprit and the service failure was relatively short-lived.

In 2020, AT&T internet and phone service was knocked out in Nashville by an explosion in the city’s downtown area.

T-Mobile also has been hit with widespread outages, including one last February and one in 2020 that prompted the FCC to launch an investigation.

“In my experience, this type of outage can negatively impact financial results in the quarter in which it occurs and cause short-term lost goodwill with customers,” David Heger, an analyst at Edward D. Jones & Co., said in an email. “However, it does not have a longer term impact on the business.”

Bloomberg Intelligence analysts John Butler and Hunter Sacco wrote in a note that AT&T could take a reputational hit from the outage. “... Network reliability likely plays a big role in customers’ choice of a provider,” they wrote.
