Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)
The Office of Student Research and Inquiry awards fellowships to students interested in pursuing their research and creative activity through the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) Program. The fellowships are available to students from all three undergraduate schools — the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Greehey School of Business and the School of Science, Engineering and Technology. Proposals from all academic disciplines are welcome and strongly encouraged.
The fellowships provide funds for undergraduate students to participate with faculty mentors in an intensive eight-week, scholarly activity, as well as travel grants for students to present their research academic or professional conference. Current undergraduate students can find more about applying for these fellowships and grants by visiting the Office of Student Research and Inquiry page on the Gateway portal.

- a one- or two-sentence introduction
- a list of thought-provoking questions or ideas
- key verbs that indicate what you need to do
- tips for success
- information about format and logistics
As you read the assignment, ask yourself a few basic questions, underline key terms, and jot down the answers on the assignment sheet:
- When is this due?
- How long is supposed to be?
- Is the topic given to me?
- If I get to choose my topic, are there any stipulations about the kind of topic and I can choose?
- What am I expected to do with this topic? Analyze it? Report about it? Make an argument about it? Compare it to something else?
- Who is my audience and what does this audience know, believe, and value about my topic?
- What is the genre of this writing (i.e., a lab report, a case study, a research paper, a reflection, a scholarship essay, an analysis of a work of literature or a painting, a summary and analysis of a reading, a literature review, etc.), and what does writing in this genre usually look like, consist of, or do?
- What kind of writing style is acceptable?
- What kind of evidence do I need to support my ideas?
- Why did my instructor ask me to do this particular task?
- What are the absolute rules of the paper or assignment?
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Writer's Handbook provides additional points about reading and analyzing the assignment or task .
Ask your faculty member questions about anything that you don't understand.

Maintaining effectiveness in HRM practice is a primary objective for all freight forwarding company to stay in the profitability track. The purpose of this study was an attempt to understand the opinion and attitude of various categories of employees in PAG, towards the effectiveness of recruitment and selection practice, training and development program, and reward and compensation system. Descriptive research method was adopted for this study using 44 valid questionnaires which were completed by selected employees in PAG using simple random sampling technique. The data collected were carefully analyzed using descriptive statistics to represent the raw data in a meaningful manner; percentage, frequency and mean analysis were used for analyzing and interpreting the opinions of the employees. The study has found high level of effectiveness on recruitment and selection practice, and training and development program while medium level of effectiveness achieved for reward and compensation system. From the analysis it was found that right employees are not assigned at the right position. As a result, employees are demotivated and their job satisfaction declined over time. Even though the company provide extensive training program; some improvement needs to be done on training program need assessment and post training program evaluation in order to increase the effectiveness level of training and development program. Although effective compensation and reward system are essential for attracting, retaining and motivating employees towards the achievement of freight forwarding companies; the finding shows that compensation and reward scheme in PAG need improvement to meet the desired target, as a result, PAG management need to work hard to achieve high level of effectiveness.

In this paper, the determinants of resistance to organizational change are studied in view of the Kurt Lewin’s three phase model of change management process. The coefficient of fifteen sources of resistance is the critical concerns of this study and are weighed against which aspect of sources of resistance presents a higher disparity of impact considering the phases of the change process as well as which has lower significance or/ and no significance at all. Questionnaires were distributed randomly to a sample of 150 in the 27 branches of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia found in Addis Ababa. A unidirectional logit regression of odds ratio and marginal function analysis was used to get a finding that age and gender are not predictors to resistance, while education and experience are negatively and positively predictors to resistance, respectively. It is also found that a single variable factor of resistance can have varied significance level on the unfreezing, moving and refreezing phases of a change process found by two way tables of column and row statistics with chi square measure of their association. In this regard vulnerability driven factor was the highest significant factor in the first two phases while managerial incapability driven factor in the last phase of change management process.
