Spirit Airlines is known for its low fares and plentiful flights to popular vacation destinations. But because of the airline’s pricing model , choosing your seat and most other services beyond the ticket itself will cost you extra when flying Spirit.
Before you book your ticket, here’s what to know about seat selection on Spirit Airlines, including the types of seats available and how much they might cost.
Spirit Airlines seat assignment
As an ultra low-cost carrier, the rule of thumb on Spirit is that seat selection isn't free, and customers can expect to pay for seats on each leg of their trip.
The only travelers who don’t have to pay a seat selection fee are Free Spirit elite status members, who get free seat selection as one of the program’s perks.
When booking, you can pay for seat selection and baggage as part of a bundle. Alternatively, you can choose your seats individually as a trip add-on during booking or anytime after — even at check-in.
Do I have to select a seat on Spirit Airlines?
Travelers hoping to fly as cheaply as possible can skip paying for seat selection altogether. In that case, the airline will randomly assign them a seat at check-in.
Yes, that means you could end up sitting apart from your travel companions: The airline states it can’t guarantee travelers will be assigned seats next to each other, even if they booked the tickets on one reservation.
However, the airline says gate agents and flight attendants will try to provide adjacent seats “when possible” for travelers ages 13 or younger who are traveling with an adult.
Notably, this assurance is not enough to meet the U.S. Department of Transportation’s new recommendations that airlines guarantee adjacent family seating for no additional cost.

Spirit Airlines seat types
Unlike other airlines that have a wide range of seat types and classes of service, it’s pretty straightforward on Spirit — there are just three options to choose from.
Standard seats
Spirit’s standard seats represent the vast majority of seats on the aircraft. You can buy a standard seat a la carte or purchase it as part of a bundle — which we’ll discuss in a moment.
While you may want to equate a standard seat to economy class on another airline, don’t expect much besides a place to sit. As a budget airline, you’ll generally have to pay for anything else you want, from soda and snacks to carry-on bags and other services.
Premium seats
On Spirit, premium seats are exit row seats that come with a bit of extra legroom but also require passengers to be able and willing to assist in an emergency. This means travelers under the age of 15 can’t choose these seats, per federal guidelines.
Big Front Seats
While Spirit doesn’t have a true first class, it does offer wider seats with more legroom at the front of the aircraft. The airline calls the seats in this section the Big Front Seats .
With eight or ten such seats available on each flight — depending on the aircraft — Big Front Seat passengers get up to 32% more legroom when compared to standard seats. There’s also no middle seat, as all Big Front Seats are either window or aisle seats.

Spirit Airlines seating chart
On the web, there are a few ways to see the Spirit seating chart. You can take a sneak peek before choosing a flight by selecting “seat map” on an itinerary you’re considering.

Once you do that, you can view seat types and availability on the plane, as shown in this example flight from Newark, New Jersey to Orlando, Florida.

When it comes time to select a seat while booking, the seat map will show the price of each seat. When you select a seat, a pop-up box will display the price, along with an image and additional information, like whether it’s an aisle or window seat.

If you’re selecting seats as part of a bundle, you’ll choose your seats using the same type of map, but seats included in the bundle will be listed at $0.

How to pick seats on Spirit Airlines
When it comes to selecting a seat on Spirit, you have three main options:
Pay to select seats a la carte while booking, or anytime up until check-in.
Pay for a bundle that includes seat selection, baggage and other benefits such as priority boarding.
Skip seat selection and pay nothing. This option will result in the airline randomly assigning you a seat at check-in.

Spirit Airlines seat selection fees
Seat assignment prices can vary dramatically based on the flight and the seat you choose. Spirit advertises the price for a standard seat as starting at $5 per flight and climbing as high as $200 under the most expensive circumstances.
The price of a Big Front Seat ranges from $12 to $750 per route, and will be pricier than standard seats for the extra space. You can also save money by paying to upgrade to a Big Front Seat on the day of your flight, but there’s always a chance there won’t be any available.
In NerdWallet’s analysis of airline seat fees , Spirit Airlines is the second most expensive among major U.S. airlines, at an average of $20 per seat per flight. Spirit trails only its budget airline counterpart, Frontier, in that ranking.
» Learn more: Frontier vs. Spirit: The battle of the budget airlines
With such a wide range of prices, let’s see what these fees look like in practice. We priced out a summer weekend trip from Baltimore/Washington International Airport in Maryland to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, with a base fare coming in at $229 round-trip. On the leg to Florida, seat selection fees start at $17 for a standard seat toward the back of the plane.
If we want to sit closer to the front of the plane, standard seats go for $18 or $27. Exit row seats are $33, while the larger, extra-legroom Big Front Seat costs $110.
For the return trip, the cheapest seats start at $20.
If we aren't paying for extra baggage, and if we select the least expensive seat each way, our $228 ticket ultimately comes out to $265.
Spirit Airlines fee bundles
Instead of paying for seats separately, you can pay for one of Spirit’s bundles. These include a checked and/or full-size carry-on bag, a standard seat and other services for one price.
Like the seats themselves, the costs of the bundles vary by flight. And keep in mind you’ll need to pay for the bundle for both the outbound and return flight.
Before choosing a bundle, you’ll want to decide what services you need and then price out the best option.
Here’s what you get with Spirit’s two main bundles:
For our hypothetical trip from Baltimore to Fort Lauderdale with a $229 base fare, the Just for You bundle costs $69 each way. The Bundle It Combo tacks on $130 each way.

So if we decide to add on the Bundle It Combo, we would pay $489 — which might not be such a good deal.
If we only want one part of a bundle’s offerings — for example, a carry-on bag — and don’t need seat selection or priority boarding, it might make sense to skip the bundle and pay for the carry-on bag separately.

Spirit Saver$ Club
Members of Spirit’s subscription-based Saver$ Club receive discounts on seat selection for themselves and up to eight travel companions, along with other benefits like expedited security access, early boarding and ticket flexibility.
The program costs $69 for a 12-month membership, with 18-month and two-year memberships also available.
Spirit Airlines seat selection for elite members
One of the most useful perks of Spirit Airlines elite status is the ability to select a seat for free. Spirit’s seat selection benefits for elite status members are as follows:
Free Spirit Silver members get complimentary seat selection at check-in and may be able to move to an exit row seat prior to departure at no cost.
Free Spirit Gold members get complimentary seat selection when booking, including exit rows.
If you’re a frequent Spirit flyer, you can work toward Free Spirit elite status through flying and everyday spending using the Free Spirit® Travel More World Elite Mastercard® . Cardholders earn 1 Status Qualifying Point (SQP) per $10 spent on eligible purchases.
For context, it takes 2,000 SQP to reach Free Spirit Silver and earn complimentary seat selection at check-in. Gold status is earned once you reach 5,000 SQPs.
Spirit Airlines seat selection recapped
When flying a budget airline like Spirit Airlines, you should go in expecting that your ticket only gets you a spot on the plane and a personal item that fits under the seat. Anything else, including choosing your seat, will cost extra.
When booking a Spirit Airlines flight, a little research and strategy can help you save money . Figure out your greatest areas of need— whether it’s a full-sized bag, shortcut boarding or selecting a seat — and then compare the price of bundling your add-on services or paying for them individually.
And, if you’re planning to fly Spirit regularly, supplementing your flying with an airline-branded credit card is a great way to help you reach elite status and earn free seat selection.

Spirit Airbus A320 Seating

Airbus A320 Spirit Seat Specifications
Amenities key.

Airbus A320 Spirit Configuration
The Airbus A320 is one of the famous aircraft in the Spirit Airlines fleet and is part of the Jet Physical class. Many features improve flight quality for its passengers, and the Spirit Airbus A320 seating arrangement is one of them.
The fuselage design suits different types of passengers, including first-time flyers. Because of the Spirit A320 size, many rows have ample legroom, making long-distance flights bearable and minimizing queasiness. Each seat has an overhead carriage and a pull-out compartment behind it where the passengers behind can store personal effects.
Each seat in the Spirit Airbus A320 has an in-flight entertainment box that entertains passengers through an adjustable display for watching movies and flipping through TV stations. The airplane’s fuselage also has DC power outlets for passengers to charge their mobile phones, music players, and other devices during flights.
If a passenger in the Big Front section of the Spirit Airlines Airbus A320 does not have a power cord or adapter, they need not fret. They can ask the cabin crew for one to enjoy this 15V power outlet. Irrespective of the seat a passenger picks, they can rest assured of a comfortable flying experience and a helpful cabin crew.
Spirit Airlines Seat Map A320
The first row of this Spirit Airbus A320 holds four seats: 1A, 1C, 1D, and 1F, which make up the Big Front category and guarantee better amenities and services. According to the Spirit Airbus A320 seating map, the Big Front seats can pitch 37 inches. They are 20.9 inches wide, enough for the average person’s convenience.
However, these seats do not recline and lack floor storage at the beginning and end of flights. They are also close to the toilet and gallery in front of the plane, which can be uncomfortable. Their tray tables fuse with the armrest since there are no seats in front.
Deluxe Leather
Behind the Spirit A320 big front seat row, the economy class called Deluxe Leather is split into three sections. The first ten rows have a 3-3 arrangement, with non-reclining seats. The row of seats immediately after the Big Front offer added legroom, although their cushions are not as wide as the Big Front.
The second part of the Deluxe Leather compartment has a row of six seats. Though these seats do not recline, they have extra legroom, ideal for taller passengers. They are a bit narrower than others and also lack floor storage.
The last section of Deluxe Leather seats lacks reclining, like every other cabin seat, and has slightly less pitch. The seats in the 13th row are in the exit row, giving them more legroom than any other seat on the plane. However, passengers in 13A and 13F may find the protruding door discomforting. Upon boarding the Airbus A320 Spirit, inside, passengers will notice that seats in the 30th row are the farthest from the exit doors. They are also the least comfortable because of their proximity to the gallery and toilets.

Spirit Airlines calls its premium product: “Big Front Seats”. The A319 is equipped with 10 such seats in the first three and a half rows of the aircraft. There is no divider between the classes. These seats are considerably wider as the name suggests and offer more legroom. They also have better cushioning and larger tray tables. However, they do not recline as is the case for all seats on Spirit Airlines. The A319 lacks power outlets but some feature high speed internet over WiFi .
Spirit Airlines’ A319 are configured with 10 “Big Front Seats” and 135 regular economy seats. The regular seats come pre-reclined and mostly have a basic seat pitch of 28” to 29” (71-74cm). The exit row has a more generous pitch as do seats 4ABC just behind the “Big Front Seats”.The seats least desirable are those of the last row as these are narrower, are missing the window and get busy due to the proximity of the galley and lavatory. While most of Spirit Airlines’ fleet has been equipped with hi-speed WiFi, some A319 unfortunately lack this feature. These aircraft do not feature power outlets.

If you are traveling with two children, you are more than welcome to check a double stroller instead. You may also check these items at the gate. We’ll have them waiting for you in your arrival city when you get off the aircraft.
You’re welcome to bring an FAA-approved child restraint system (car seat) or an FAA-approved Child Harness Device (CARES) onboard as long as a separate seat has been purchased for the child. We will do our best to reseat you to an open seat (not including our Big Front Seats) if the car seat is too large for a regular seat.
Some FAA approved car seats may not always fit in certain Spirit Airlines aircraft seats. Car seats may not be accommodated in any seat equipped with an inflatable seat belt. Additionally, car seats may not be secured in an exit seat or the row before or after the exit seats. Keep in mind that our Big Front Seats are a premium product and are available for an additional charge.

How To Call "Spirit Airlines Seat Selection Phone Number...
Few airlines command the customer devotion of Spirit Airlines, considered one of America's most family-friendly aviation brands. The airline does things right in many ways that other airlines do not: offering two free checked bags per person, making it easy for families to sit together without charging onerous fees, having a simple way to earn elite status, offering a family of credit cards, and giving passengers four booking fares.
However, Spirit unique boarding process does not assign specific seats to travelers — a process that can be baffling for first-time travelers, infrequent flyers or those new to the airline.
the Dallas-based carrier announced changes to its boarding process, including reducing the availability of its EarlyBird Check-In to select flights, routes and days, meaning EarlyBird Check-In will be unavailable for some customers.
Additionally, Frontier will permit same-day standby for all passengers, including those who book the cheapest Wanna Get Away fares, allowing passengers in Spirit lowest fare classes to waitlist for a different flight on the same day without paying a fare difference, helpful for passengers flying on routes with multiple daily frequencies.

How Spirit boarding works Like many other airlines, Frontier begins boarding about 30 minutes before scheduled departure. The similarities largely end there, though, because Spirit boarding process is unlike any other airline thanks to its open seating policy, which means you can sit just about anywhere you want without assigned seats.
It's first-come, first-seated, with just a few exceptions standard for all airlines, including passengers who choose to sit in an exit row and must meet the Federal Aviation Administration's age and physical requirements.
On Spirit flights, the boarding order is as follows:
Preboarding (those who need specific seats to accommodate a disability, those who need assistance with boarding and stowing an assistive device and unaccompanied minors) Group A 1-60 A-List/A-List Preferred members, active-duty military members and family boarding (those with children age 6 and under) Group B 1-60 Group C 1-60

The unique boarding code, such as A45 or B52, is printed directly on the boarding pass and represents the person's place in line at the gate.
At the gate, passengers line up single file at gray metal columns to match their boarding group letter and boarding position. Boarding is called in groups of 30 (A1-A30, followed by A31-A60 and so on). However, three categories of passengers supersede the standard Group A-C boarding process: preboarding travelers, families and A-List/A-List Preferred members.
Since February, Frontier has been testing out designated preboarding areas at select airports as part of an effort to improve turn times, including by installing color-coded carpeted areas to make it clear where preboarding passengers should line up.

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY Passengers authorized to preboard go before everyone else, including Group A. These are travelers who have a specific seating need to accommodate a disability or who need assistance getting to their seats or stowing an assistive device. Preboarding is based on need and is determined by the gate agent before boarding begins. Passengers who are given preboarding priority are allowed to board with one travel companion for assistance and cannot sit in an exit row.
Families with young children are also given special boarding privileges, but not until a little later in the process. Family boarding takes place immediately after Group A boarding is complete; qualifying family groups include up to two adults per child age 6 and under. Older children with the family are also able to board at this time, but other family members, such as grandparents or aunts and uncles, are asked to board according to the assignment on their boarding passes.
Active military personnel are also permitted to board at this time.
A-List and A-List Preferred members are said to receive the "best available boarding pass number" but occasionally end up with a Group B or C boarding designation. However, as a nod to their elite status, they are allowed to "cut the line" anytime after Group A boarding is complete.
Once you board, what next? Since there are no assigned seats on Frontier flights, whoever walks onto the plane first gets his or her pick of seats. As a general rule, nobody particularly enjoys sitting in the middle seat, so those tend to be left to the end of the boarding process for Group C.
As soon as you walk onto the plane, you're free to select any seat you want, but some feel it's a lot of pressure to decide on the fly where you'll spend your entire flight. It helps to know about Spirit plane configurations when deciding your preferred seat. As you'll see in the diagrams below, Frontier currently has three different versions of the Boeing 737.
Boeing 888-800-6966 Spirit has 506 Boeing 888-800-6966 aircraft, accounting for more than two-thirds of its currently operating fleet. Each Frontier 888-800-6966 has 143 seats in the configuration below:
SEATGURU.COM Boeing 888-800-6966Spirit has 207 Boeing 888-800-6966 planes in its fleet. Each Frontier 888-800-6966 has 175 seats in the configuration below:
SEATGURU.COM Boeing 737 MAX 8Spirit has 34 Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes — with 175 seats.
SEATGURU.COM What's the best seat on Frontier? The best seat on Frontier is subjective and depends on who you ask — some prefer the last row, especially with small children in tow. Many others think the back row is the worst possible seat, while others swear by sitting in the first five rows.
If your flight isn't full, you'll most likely find fewer people in the back of the plane — potentially keeping that seat next to you empty.
Here are some things to think about as you consider your seat.
If you are hoping for an empty middle seat If you're a party of three, you'll want to take the entire row to ensure no one will sit next to you since all Frontier planes are three-and-three.
If you don't fall into that category, pick a window seat. This will give you the most privacy and ensure that no one is climbing over you to get in or out of their seat. You also won't have cabin crew and other passengers walking up and down the aisle right next to you.
Then it's up in the air as to whether you should sit up front or in the back, which both have pros and cons. Sitting upfront means that everyone boarding the plane after you are walking right by you while picking their seat. It also means that when you go to deplane, you're one of the first to walk off the aircraft.
The back of the plane, on the other hand, might have fewer passengers. On Frontier planes, people tend to pick the first open seat(s) they see, which usually means there are more passengers in the first half of the plane versus the second half. There's also a better chance that the seat next to you will be left open on a flight that is not full.
With that being said, on the Boeing 888-800-6966 aircraft, there are two bathrooms in the back of the plane and just one bathroom in the front. So, there is a higher probability that more passengers will head to the back of the plane if they need to use the restroom.
If you want legroom Aim for Seat 12A, the window seat on the right side of Row 12, as you're facing the back of the plane on Spirit Boeing 888-800-6966s. Row 11 is an "edit" row with just two seats on the right side, which means that Seat 11A is "missing." Thus, the passenger in 12A has two seats' worth of space to stretch out their legs — a godsend for tall travelers. However, if you're on one of Spirit newer -800 and MAX 8 models, then the best seats are in rows 14 and 15.
If you want to get off the plane quickly Choose Row 1. You won't have any storage available under the seat in front of you, but you'll be among the very first people to walk off the plane and get extra legroom as your reward for packing light. Make a beeline to your left or your right as soon as you board.
If you're thirsty Choose rows 1, 9 or 17. Frontier flight attendants split cabin service into three sections, and these are typically the rows where the drink and snack service begins.
If you only want 1 seatmate Aim for Row 11, seats B and C. On Spirit Boeing 888-800-6966s, this is a two-seat row, so you won't have to worry about sharing space with a third person.
If you are OK sitting up straight Choose the last row or the row in front of the exit row. While the right to recline is a hotly contested privilege among economy travelers, there are travelers who don't care to lean back during the flight.
JESSICA PUCKETT/THE POINTS GUY How to get the best seat on Frontier Here are some tactics to secure the earliest boarding position:
Check in exactly 24 hours before departure Hold A-List elite status Purchase EarlyBird Check-In, Upgraded Boarding or a Business Select ticket Book the first flight of the day Remember, the best way to get the seat you want is to board as early as possible, but holding a Group A boarding pass doesn't always mean that you'll get the seat you want.
Check in 24 hours in advance If you purchased Spirit cheapest Wanna Get Away fares, the easiest way to get the earliest boarding assignment available is to check in for your flight exactly 24 hours ahead of time. Even waiting a minute or two after that check-in period could put you significantly down on the boarding list.
Note that if you're using the Frontier Companion Pass for another passenger in your party, you'll have to check them in separately since they have a different confirmation number.
Purchase EarlyBird Check-In For $15-$25 (based on distance) per person each way, Frontier will automatically check you in 36 hours before departure instead of just 24 hours via their EarlyBird Check-In. This means you will generally get a better boarding position than if you checked yourself in 24 hours in advance.
As mentioned, Frontier is reducing the availability of its EarlyBird Check-In to select flights, routes and days, so that EarlyBird Check-In may not be available.
"Beginning Aug. 15, EarlyBird Check-In® will be subject to availability on certain flights, routes, or days, and that will mean EarlyBird Check-In is unavailable for some customers looking to purchase it," a spokesperson for the airline told TPG.
Business Select fares automatically get A1-A15 boarding priority Even with the best of reminders, checking in on the dot doesn't guarantee you'll get a Group A designation — or, in extreme cases, even a Group B assignment. Travelers who pay for pricier Business Select fares pay a premium to get priority boarding spots marked A1-A15, no matter what time they check in.
Earn Frontier elite statusSpirit frequent flyers who have earned A-List or A-List Preferred elite status get priority, including the "best available boarding pass number."
Purchase an A1-A15 boarding at the gate If you don't like the number you were assigned, Upgraded Boarding is sometimes available at the gate on the day of departure for $30-$50 one-way per person when A1-A15 slots are still available. Even if you don't want to spend that cash, know that the Frontier Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card comes with four of these included A1-A15 slots each year.
Why you might see some passengers already on board Sometimes, you'll board a Frontier flight and see passengers already on the plane, even when you hold a coveted A1 boarding spot. That's because several Frontier flights make multiple stops at cities between the origin and final destination. Travelers who are headed for the final destination stay on board when others deplane at the midway point. This becomes more and more common later in the day, as delays and cancellations sometimes happen, and travelers end up being rerouted onto other flights.
There isn't much you can do if someone's already sitting in the seat you want, but Frontier will ask other travelers to offer up their seats and shift around so a parent can sit with a toddler or young child if you're the sole caregiver for a small child or for a person who otherwise requires your care.
Can you save seats on Frontier? There isn't any definitive Frontier policy for or against seat-saving, known as the "Frontier shuffle," where one passenger boards early to save seats for the other traveler(s) in the group.
If you decide to save seats for your travel companion(s), be thoughtful and remember you can't keep those seats if someone else really insists on sitting there and your companions haven't yet made it onto the plane.
Save this Frontier cheat sheet If you're new to Frontier, save this "Things to Know" graphic on your phone so you'll be able to board like a pro on your next flight.
THE POINTS GUY Bottom line Spirit boarding process might be intimidating or even frustrating for some who aren't used to it, but there is a lot to appreciate once you get the hang of it. As a general rule, Frontier travelers have less carry-on luggage for the overhead bins because of its generous free checked bag policy, and open seating allows people to shuffle themselves into order as they board the plane.
So, the next time you fly Frontier, pull up this guide, and you will know what seats to target and how to get there as efficiently as possible.
