Why go to space when you can go to Miami Beach?
It's hard to write about this much mediocrity for this many reviews in a row but this is another film that's just fine. Lassard is being honored as "Police Officer of the Decade" in Miami Beach so he brings the team along for the conference and wacky beach hijinks with a jewel thief. I miss Steve Guttenberg in the lead but enjoy the villains the most of any of the films. It's really watchable but not highly memorable.

Ok where the fuck was Mahoney???
Review by Ivica_Pusticki ★★★ 2
So...I feel like the only reason this movie was made in the first place was so that the cast and crew could have some fun in Miami. Because POLICE ACADEMY 5: ASSIGNMENT MIAMI BEACH is exactly that: the cast (and crew) having a blast in Miami and goofing around for 90 minutes straight.
In my opinion, this movie is no worse than the previous sequels. It's just as goofy, silly, and funny as POLICE ACADEMY 4: CITIZENS ON PATROL and POLICE ACADEMY 3: BACK IN TRAINING , and definitely more entertaining than POLICE ACADEMY 2: THEIR FIRST ASSIGNMENT .
However, it's missing one important ingredient: Mahoney a.k.a. Steve Guttenberg, who went to do THREE MEN AND A BABY instead and never returned…

Police Academy 5 has moments, but its enormous flaw is having the audience believe Tackleberry is not packing heat.
Review by Lebowskidoo 🇨🇦 🎬 🍿 ★★★★
This is the one with the air boats and Tackleberry arresting a shark.
Missing Mahoney and Zed, but the remaining crew hold their own quite well in this first sequel without them. There are less laughs but still an entertaining entry. Only slightly watered down. G.W. Bailey and George Gaynes get to really stand out here.
Review by Nachtwaechter ★★ 6

"Some dickhead is standing in my sun!" - Capt. Thaddeus Harris
The fifth assignment in the series is a little on the bland side with very few funny moments and entertaining characters to carry the slim plot along.
Review by Daniel Bernard ★★★½ 2
Seemingly mediocre franchises need 5 chances to succeed. First Friday the 13th. Now, this.
Was without a doubt the breeziest and the most I've been engaged by it all. Sacrifices may have been made, such as no more Bobcat. And the hilariously bodacious soundtrack that scored the last wasn't replicated here either. Guttenberg was barely in the previous two entries, so his complete absence here wasn't really felt. And, while David Spade could have filled in his shoes after his "rad" intro previously, it's never a bad thing to have Matt McCoy around. Why it’s a perfectly sane thing to do .
Less so, but at the risk of finally getting myself "canceled" is Rene Auberjonois as the heavy; a "Mexican…
Review by Bernd Plissken ★★ 2

I have a goddamn headache
Review by Stephen Robert Smith ★½
This is where the 'Police Academy' franchise gets a little silly and a bit gimmicky, you've lost your tentpole character and biggest star in Steve Guttenberg and once again the decision was made to take the action away from the academy and across the country altogether.
Matt McCoy has been brought in to replace the void left by Mohoney, sure his character has a different name, but for all tense and purposes he's essentially a carbon copy. McCoy himself does a reasonably job, but he's fighting an uphill battle right from the start, his character isn't a patch on Mohoney and never reaches quite the same level.
This was the first film of the series where it really was a…

The new film is scheduled for production for 2014. Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach
- The Police Academy's commandant will be honored at a police convention in Miami Beach. At the airport he picks a wrong bag with stolen diamonds. The "owners" want them back.
- Indeed, it seems that some people never learn, and after the recent fiasco of conniving Captain Harris in Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987) , once more, the sneaky officer wants to take over the ageing Commandant Lassard's job, and step into his shoes. This time, the perfect opportunity arises in the shape of the prestigious "Police Officer of the Decade" convention in sunny Miami Beach, to commemorate Lassard's dedication to the force; however, a fateful encounter with an audacious trio of diamond thieves leads to a dangerous, high-speed chase across the Everglades. Now, it is up to Commandant Lassard's nephew, Sergeant Nick Lassard, and the Academy's loyal graduates to save the day. Can the boys thwart Harris' plans? — Nick Riganas
- Commandant Eric Lassard, the head of the academy, has reached mandatory retirement age, much to the delight of Captain Thaddeus Harris, who is planning to take over Lassard's job. Lassard and a handful of the Academy's former students travel to Miami for a special ceremony where Lassard is to be honored as the Police Officer of the Decade at a convention. Along for the trip to Miami are Moses Hightower, Eugene Tackleberry, Larvell Jones, Debbie Callahan, Laverne Hooks, Tommy "House" Conklin, and Commissioner Henry Hurst, along with Harris and his right-hand man Proctor. A jewel thief named Manny has smuggled stolen diamonds. Manny's suitcase is accidentally switched with Lassard's identical suitcase at the airport in Miami. This gets Lassard and Harris kidnapped by Manny and his two henchmen Julio and Pete, with everyone, including Lassard's nephew, Sergeant Nick Lassard, in pursuit. — Todd Baldridge
- The cynical Captain Harris and his dim-witted lacky Lt. Proctor finally finds the goods he needs to push Commandant Eric Lassard out at the Police Academy: he is one year late for mandatory retirement. But before he retires, Lassard is chosen as "Police Officer of the Decade", and brings his favorite graduates Sgts. Hightower, Jones, Tackleberry and Hooks, Lt. Callahan, and new graduate Officer Thomas "House" Conklin to the National Police Chiefs Convention in Miami Beach to celebrate with him. Harris and Proctor decide to travel down to Miami Beach to discredit Lassard once again so Harris can attempt again to take over the police academy for himself. But Harris and Proctor are tricked into chartering an old rickety cargo flight down to Florida while the police academy group travels first class aboard a 747 plane. While there, the misfit police officers meet Lassard's nephew, Sgt. Nick Lassard of the Miami Police Department. The fun is complicated when he unwittingly takes a bag belonging to jewel thieves containing stolen merchandise. As the jewel thieves try to get the bag back, and Captain Harris tries to prove to Commissioner Hurst that he's the right man to replace Commandant Lassard, the usual hijinks ensue, including Lassard trying to guess the annual procedural demonstration. At the awards ceremony, when the jewel thieves kidnap Commandant Lassard, he goes willingly, thinking it is indeed the procedural demonstration. It launches a negotiation, which Captain Harris botches, getting himself captured as well. A chase across the Everglades ensues to rescue the oblivious and absent-minded Commandant. During the chase, Harris falls overboard and is nearly eaten by a large aligator, until Hightower dives into the water to rescue him and subdue the aligator. When the chase leads to the end, Lassard is held at gunpoint by the jewel thief's leader, still thinking that it's a demonstration. When Nick tells his uncle that this isn't a demonstration, the elderly Commandant knocks out the jewel thief by himself and captures him. The next day, when Commandant Lassard is giving his "Police Officer of the Decade" award and announces his retirement from the force, a loophole by Nick shows that his mandatory retirement is in fact optional and that he can retire anytime he wants to. Lassard then changes his mind about retiring much to great joy and applause.
