Strategic Research Insights

During economic downturns, many businesses make the mistake of cutting back on their marketing and product development budgets. But this is the ideal time for grabbing market share from your competitors.

Many firms also tend to place too much emphasis on understanding their existing and most loyal customers. However, time and time again, our experience has shown that some of the best and most actionable insights are often gleaned by engaging with less loyal and committed customers.

Along with other top survey market research agencies, we also use the most advanced analytical and statistical techniques available, enabling us to get to the heart of your business problem.

Fancy a look round our platform? Show me

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve some idea of what market research companies in the UK do, and how research is the rocket fuel that powers your most effective campaigns, product developments, and marketing strategies.

But for the avoidance of doubt and to make sure we’re all on the same page, market research is about gathering and analyzing data on customers, competitors, distributors, and other actors and forces in the marketplace.

That’s important because market research companies take the guesswork out of getting through to audiences. By studying consumers and gathering information on their likes, dislikes and so on, a brand can make evidence-based decisions rather than relying on instinct or experience.

If a business wants to know – really know – what sort of products or services consumers want to buy, through to where, when, and how those products and services should be marketed, then it makes total sense to ask the prospective audience.

Without the certainty that market research companies provides, a business is basically hoping for the best, and while we salute their optimism, that’s not exactly a reliable strategy for success. The point is, research matters . To help you take advantage of this, here’s what this blog covers:

How to choose the right market research company for you

  • Meet the major players: market research companies in the UK

Market research FAQs

market research studies london

Different market research companies are not created equal. Behind the snazzy websites and persuasive pitching, individual research companies can vary pretty dramatically in terms of what they do and how they do it – all of which can radically alter the benefit their service provides. How do you pick the right research partner for you? Some key things to consider are:

  • Does the market research company you’re considering work with or know about your audience?
  • Does the company have expertise in your industry and category?
  • Do they have a history of success with businesses like yours?
  • What’s their capacity? Can they actually do the job you need doing?
  • Does the company conduct the right sort of research to answer your questions?
  • Are they transparent about where their data comes from and how they ensure quality?
  • Does the company have a track record of providing actionable insights?
  • What’s their process for collecting and analyzing data?
  • How do they communicate with their clients?
  • Will the market research company provide results in a timely manner?
  • Will their work add value for your business?

While there are hundreds of market research companies in London out there, these questions should help you narrow the field to a handful of promising candidates. On that topic, let’s meet 12 of the UK’s major players, starting – unashamedly – with us, GWI, but otherwise in no particular order.

market research studies london

The cost of accessing a market research company’s platform – assuming they offer one – varies considerably between providers. LinkedIn suggests some ballpark figures for custom research projects, although obviously this can vary dramatically.

Using market research, a process that starts with collecting data on your customers, followed by qualitative and quantitative methods like focus groups, surveys and customer behavior data. The aim is to analyze the data to look for trends and patterns.

Market research provides critical information about your market and your business landscape. It can tell you how your company is perceived by the target customers and clients you want to reach. It can also give you the consumer insights you need to refine your product, ace your marketing plans, and size up new markets.

How to find the perfect Market Research in London?

Introduction, what is market research.

Before beginning to define your needs for your next Market Research undertaking, it's important to know what it is all about. The digital age hasn't been so diversified regardless of of the particular set of skills that our Market Research experts will be able to assist you with. Hiring the perfect agency for your project begins with the ideal definition of your requirements.

Market research is the process of collecting information about target markets or potential consumers. This allows a business to better assess the products and services it provides to these consumers, in order to find those that are most in demand.

Market Research vs Product Research

Market research provides information about current trends, target markets and competitors' data. These are to provide insights on what customers are looking for while product research focuses on pricing, features and functions of the market segment it belongs to.

Market Research identifies the detailed study of consumer behavior and the whole market, in which customer behaviour is observed and examined. Marketing research only indicates well-planned and rational research, investigation, and interpretation of previous advertising issues undertaken with the objective of successful actionable suggestions for prospective action. Market Research is one of the most important elements in defining the strengths of your company. Market Research helps in identifying new opportunities and developing new products.

10 Best market research companies in the UK for reliable data and analysis

2. vision one, 3. schlesinger group uk, 5. qualtrics, 6. mesh experience, 7. surveymonkey, 8. sis international research, 9. brandwatch, are uk market research companies effective.

The UK market remains a key choice for businesses looking to expand their customer base and unlock growth opportunities. But you can’t do it without first gathering actionable intelligence about buyers, their needs and their preferences. Market research companies in the UK can help you make strategic business decisions with consumer insights.

These market research agencies use quantitative and qualitative research methods to help you assess the competition, buyers’ pain points, and motivations. This data gives you the actionable insights you need to make your brand stand out in the crowd. For example, you can develop better products that meet customers’ needs or use competitive intelligence to create better marketing strategies. You can also use consumer insights to spot untapped product segments and drive business growth, and to spot potentially devastating fluctuations in your market, allowing you to act before the going gets tough.

Market research platforms do almost the same job as a market research agency but much more efficiently and at a lower cost. For example, consumer research tools like Attest let you tap into a global audience of consumers and get the insights without having to wait for weeks or paying a hefty amount. With in-built analytical capabilities, these tools get you quality data analysis much faster for efficient decision-making. Another great thing is that you have control over your insights, and can reuse them as you wish—something that’s trickier to do with a market research agency.

Market research agencies and tools offer endless opportunities for you to explore new ideas and build on existing product, marketing and sales strategies. But finding a market research company or platform that’s right for you can be challenging. Whether you’re looking for market research agencies in London , Birmingham, Glasgow, or beyond, we’ve got you covered.

Here we explore the top 10 UK market research companies and platforms that make it effortless for you to gather and analyze data and get your insights.

Paid market research in London

The location of each market research project depends on the criteria set by the brand we’re working with. We conduct studies across the whole of the UK, including all the big cities – and London is naturally a very popular location! To find out more about our paid market research in London, read on…

So what’s market research all about? Well, before brands bring their new products and services to the market, they need to find out what their target audience thinks about them. That’s why our mission is to recruit enthusiastic individuals who love to share their honest thoughts and opinions with these brands. No matter if your views are positive or negative, each and every piece of feedback is highly valued by both us and the brands we work with.

So, to have your say in the ways products are launched, branded, packaged, marketed, or priced, sign up to our respondent community. You’ll receive invitations to take part in studies that are relevant to you, plus, you’ll always be paid for your time. Types of studies include:

Focus Groups

If you’d like to take part in a focus group, you will probably need to travel to a venue near your location. Our paid market research in London is often held centrally and, for focus groups, we use two viewing facilities to host – Spectrum and Home Sweet Home . Both venues are comfortable, relaxed and homely, to encourage casual discussion between respondents. So, there’s no need to feel intimidated – and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people!

Paid market research London

Ethnography

From accompanied shops to in-home interviews, ethnographic research is fun and interactive. It’s carried out in real-life environments and provides brands with more in-depth insights into how their audience uses their product or service. For example, an accompanied shop involves a researcher joining a respondent on a shopping trip to observe their habits – yes, you really can get paid to go shopping! Our paid market research in London includes ethnography, so check out our current projects page to see what we’re running at the moment.

Online studies

Don’t fancy leaving the house to take part in a research study? No problem. We also recruit respondents for online communities and interviews which you can complete from the comfort of your own home and work around your personal life.

Can anyone join in?

Yep – absolutely. You can apply to paid market research in London or wherever you’re based as long as you’re over 16 years old. All you need is an interest in sharing your opinions and getting your voice heard! On some occasions, we even conduct market research with children which we recruit through parents. See – we told you anyone can join in! We look forward to hearing from you!

Top Successful Market Research Companies for Startups in London in 2023

Market research is gathering inputs, opinions, and feedback from potential consumers. This information helps companies identify target market, products, and services. It involves two types of research, namely primary and secondary. The blog talks about what market research companies do , how much do companies pay for market research , and why companies carry out market research . Additionally, the blog talks about a few market research companies start-up entrepreneurs can contact to up their business.

Market Research helps determine the value of a product through research and surveys conducted with potential customers. The data collected through such research provides critical insights for companies to make well-informed decisions. It involves collecting information about the consumers for a business to perform effectively and succeed in the market. Market research is imperative for any business, be it big or small. It aids startups in making critical decisions during the initial setup.

Startups must perform research ahead of commencing the venture. They can either do it by using existing information about the industry or conduct their research by engaging a market research firm directly. There are five fundamental reasons for startups to conduct market research : market need, business location, competition, customer need, and marketing practices.

There are several types of Market Research . It can be primary market research, secondary market research, qualitative, quantitative, branding, customer (loyalty, satisfaction, segmentation, etc.), competitor and product research, etc. Combining data across primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative, and the critical area of product/reason for the research in an effective marketing strategy is essential. Primary research is when self collects information, and Secondary research is data collected by a third party like surveys, websites, etc.

Research provides excellent insights into your business and the broader marketplace and helps enhance your customer base, improve your business and reduce customer churn.

Are you wondering about what market research companies do?

Guidance from Cite Them Right Online

Cite Them Right Online provides a few different types of guidance that can be relevant for Referencing Market Research and Data. The most straightforward is the guidance for referencing  Market research reports from online databases . Navigate to Harvard > Research > Reports > Market research reports from online databases to find the guidance.

Market Research Reports referenced in Harvard will resemble the following:

In-text citation: (MarketLine, 2019)

Reference List:

MarketLine (2019) 'United Kingdom - Gyms, Health & Fitness Clubs'. Available at: http://advantage.marketline.com/ (Accessed: 14 August 2019).

Using RefWorks to cite and reference company information

RefWorks   is an online reference management, writing and collaboration tool designed to help researchers at all levels gather, organise, store and share all types of information and to generate citations and bibliographies.

Market research references can be added to your RefWorks library so you can quickly and easily add it to your work, but RefWorks does not have as many standard formats for doing this as Cite Them Right Online.

  • Add a reference to market research using the + button in the web version of RefWorks.
  • Select the 'Report' option for the type of source you wish to reference. This will give you a set of boxes with various details to fill in such as 'Title', 'Date of Publication'.
  • Using the guidance above from Cite Them Right Online , fill out the boxes with the information you have available.
  • The author of the data will be the publisher of the database that you got it from because market research databases publish their own information. So, for example, if you used Mintel, the author will be Mintel.

You can then click on the " symbol in RefWorks to check what your reference will look like when it appears in a bibliography. Make sure you have selected 'Cite Them Right - Harvard'.

Creative differences - by Universal Music UK

Resource-images-unlimited -6-

The handbook highlights that while nearly all creative companies recognise the value of neurodiversity in the workplace only very few have neurodivergent-friendly policies and practices in place. It goes on to provide a range of practical solutions companies can adopt to make their workforces more accessible in areas including recruitment, mentorship and career progression.

MRS Unlimited see this as a resource to inspire other businesses to start thinking about actively implementing neurodivergent-friendly policies into their market research practices. You may find that running a project that others can get behind will drive businesses closer to inclusion and the inclusion pledge.

Channel 4 - Mirror on Neurodiversity

Resource-images-unlimited -2-

At Channel 4, we’ve been running our award winning ‘Mirror on the Industry’ project for 5 years. This is a study that audits TV advertising to see how diverse and representative it really is. We are now building on the project with the ‘Mirror on…’ series. A series of individual reports that take a closer look at some of the topics we evaluate in the wider study and dig deeper into the feelings and perceptions of our audiences. Following our Body Diversity and Women’s Safety reports in 2022, the next topic we’re exploring in this series is Neurodiversity. Our Mirror on the Industry part 3 research found that only 1 in 1,000 ads audited featured neurodiverse representation, highlighting the need to better understand the importance and challenges of authentically representing neurodivergent individuals and explore practical solutions for addressing them. Our aim, through this report, is to shine a light on this currently marginalised, excluded and commonly stereotyped group; underlining the need for advertisers and brands to go beyond physical disability, better design for disability inclusion and achieve accessibility on a holistic level.

Magnificent 7 profits now exceed almost every country in the world. Should we be worried?

  • The so-called "Magnificent 7" U.S. tech behemoths encompass Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla.
  • In a research note Tuesday, Deutsche Bank analysts highlighted that the Magnificent 7's combined market cap alone would make it the second-largest country stock exchange in the world.
  • However, this level of concentration has led some analysts to voice concerns over related risks in the U.S. and global stock markets.

In this article

The so-called "Magnificent 7" now wields greater financial might than almost every other major country in the world, according to new Deutsche Bank research.

The meteoric rise in the profits and market capitalizations of the Magnificent 7 U.S. tech behemoths — Apple , Amazon , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla — outstrip those of all listed companies in almost every G20 country, the bank said in a research note Tuesday. Of the non-U.S. G20 countries, only China and Japan (and the latter, only just) have greater profits when their listed companies are combined.

Deutsche Bank analysts highlighted that the Magnificent 7's combined market cap alone would make it the second-largest country stock exchange in the world, double that of Japan in fourth. Microsoft and Apple, individually, have similar market caps to all combined listed companies in each of France, Saudi Arabia and the U.K, they added.

However, this level of concentration has led some analysts to voice concerns over related risks in the U.S. and global stock market.

Jim Reid, Deutsche Bank's head of global economics and thematic research, cautioned in a follow-up note last week that the U.S. stock market is "rivalling 2000 and 1929 in terms of being its most concentrated in history."

Deutsche analyzed the trajectories of all 36 companies that have been in the top five most valuable in the S&P 500 since the mid-1960s.

Company strategies now more important to returns than macro environment, economist says

Reid noted that while big companies eventually tended to drop out of the top five as investment trends and profit outlooks evolved, 20 of the 36 that have populated that upper bracket are still in the top 50 today.

"Of the Mag 7 in the current top 5, Microsoft has been there for all but 4 months since 1997. Apple ever present since December 2009, Alphabet for all but two months since August 2012 and Amazon since January 2017. The newest entrant has been Nvidia which has been there since H1 last year," he said.

Tesla had a run of 13 months in the top five most valuable companies in 2021/22 but is now down to 10th, with the share price having fallen by around 20% since the start of 2024. By contrast, Nvidia's stock has continued to surge, adding almost 47% since the turn of the year.

"So, at the edges the Mag 7 have some volatility around the position of its members, and you can question their overall valuations, but the core of the group have been the largest and most successful companies in the US and with it the world for many years now," Reid added.

Could the gains broaden out?

Despite a muted global economic outlook at the start of 2023, stock market returns on Wall Street were impressive, but heavily concentrated among the Magnificent Seven, which benefitted strongly from the AI hype and rate cut expectations.

In a research note last week, wealth manager Evelyn Partners highlighted that the Magnificent 7 returned an incredible 107% over 2023, far outpacing the broader MSCI USA index, which delivered a still healthy but relatively paltry 27% to investors.

Daniel Casali, chief investment strategist at Evelyn Partners, suggested that signs are emerging that opportunities in U.S. stocks could broaden out beyond the 7 megacaps this year for two reasons, the first of which is the resilience of the U.S. economy.

"Despite rising interest rates, company sales and earnings have been resilient. This can be attributed to businesses being more disciplined on managing their costs and households having higher levels of savings built up during the pandemic. In addition, the U.S. labour market is healthy with nearly three million jobs added during 2023," Casali said.

Nvidia has an 'iron grip' on the market, says RSE Ventures' Matt Higgins

The second factor is improving margins, which Casali said indicates that companies have adeptly raised prices and passed the impact of higher inflation onto customers.

"Although wages have risen, they haven't kept pace with those price rises, leading to a decline in employment costs as a proportion of the price of goods and services," Casali said.

"Factors, including China joining the World Trade Organisation and technological advances, have enabled an increased supply of labour and accessibility to overseas job markets. This has contributed to improving profit margins, supporting earnings growth. We see this trend continuing."

When the market is so heavily weighted toward a small number of stocks and one particular theme — notably AI — there is a risk of missed investment opportunities, Casali said.

Many of the 493 other S&P 500 stocks have struggled over the past year, but he suggested that some could start to participate in the rally if the two aforementioned factors continue to fuel the economy.

"Given AI-led stocks' stellar performance in 2023 and the beginning of this year, investors may feel inclined to continue to back them," he said.

"But, if the rally starts to widen, investors could miss out on other opportunities beyond the Magnificent Seven stocks."

Home, heritage and community languages: recognising the breadth of language learning

21 February 2024

On UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day 2024, which celebrates learners’ universal right to study their heritage languages, Professor Li Wei, Chair in Applied Linguistics and Director and Dean of IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, writes:

Professor Li Wei with 20 Bedford Way in the background

“Language learning, especially when accompanied by learning about related cultures, brings many benefits to the individual and society, from greater intercultural understanding locally and on the world stage, to cognitive, educational and economic returns. The UK is fortunate to host a rich diversity of languages in addition to English, which are spoken by one in five school pupils. The UK nations bring their own linguistic diversity. There are strong social justice as well as economic arguments for championing, supporting, recognising and celebrating that facility with language. In particular, for these language learners, the benefits accrue to their sense of identity, confidence and self-efficacy.

Last year, IOE launched the National Consortium for Languages Education (NCLE), funded by the UK government Department for Education, to support excellence in language education in schools across England and improve the learning opportunities and outcomes for all pupils. This includes a specific strand on ‘home, heritage and community languages’ (HHCLs), focused on improving pupils’ access to learning and qualification in these languages, working with complementary community language schools as well as building awareness, visibility and capacity within the schools system. We are also proud to host the Mandarin Excellence Programme , which similarly supports learning and qualification in a language beyond those that are most established within our schools, in MEP’s case building the teaching workforce from scratch.

England is, then, making important steps forward in recognising a breadth of language learning. Improved support for complementary schools’ important contribution to this effort, especially for HHCLs, as well as greater flexibility in examination, to facilitate ‘examination when ready’, would be beneficial additions."

"Because in my country there were not many studies connected to how children were learning second languages...I went to every lecture thinking about how to connect the contents to the way children in English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts in Chile learn English" -  Flor Toledo-Sandoval, TESOL MA .
"I learned fundamental theories in second language acquisition, how to design teaching materials and research related to language assessments" -  Aki Tsunemoto, TESOL MA .
"The COVID-19 pandemic, which has created the largest disruption of education systems in history, also prompts me to research and assess a wide range of online educational resources to support the continuity of language teaching and learning" -  Yeonwoo Jung, TESOL MA .

Lazard Healthcare Services Leaders Study 2024

Reports and studies — Financial Advisory, Healthcare

February 20, 2024

market research studies london

In 2023, healthcare services companies faced a challenging macroeconomic backdrop, characterized by elevated inflation and rising interest rates. At the same time, the U.S. economy showed resilience as the year drew to a close, and the Fed’s December announcement that it was holding rates steady and expected several rate cuts in 2024 improved market sentiment. However, significant uncertainty remains around the precise timing of any rate cuts, as well as the timing and magnitude of any rate cuts on companies’ cost of capital, valuations, and deal activity across the industry. Nevertheless, healthcare services companies have both strategic and financial imperatives to pursue deals, and investors have mandates to deploy record levels of dry powder and distribute capital to the investors in their funds.

Against this backdrop, we fielded this year’s Healthcare Services Leaders Study in December 2023. This year’s study included participation from 183 leaders across many of the largest healthcare services companies, as well as smaller public and private companies, and prominent investment firms. The respondents encompass 121 C-level corporate executives and 62 leading investors. Among the C-level executives, 11 are from large-cap public companies, 23 are from SMID-caps and 87 are from private companies.

Our Central Findings:

1. Healthcare services equity market conditions are not expected to recover to normalized, sustainable levels conducive to IPOs before the second half of 2024 or 2025. An improved macroeconomic outlook, greater access to capital and improved investor sentiment toward sector profitability are the factors expected to catalyze a market recovery.

2. While views are split on whether large-cap consolidation will increase or stay the same in the first half of 2024, private equity platform acquisitions, bolt-on acquisitions and corporate carve-outs are expected to increase. Greater alignment of buyer and seller price expectations, greater availability of affordable financing and lower perceived risk among buyers in achieving target company forecasts will be important catalysts of rising strategic activity.

3. Healthcare IT (“HCIT”), mental / behavioral health and home health are expected to receive greater investment in 2024 than in 2023, followed by payer solutions and pharma services. Respondents believe that facility-based care and supply chain are the areas least likely to receive greater investment in 2024.

4. Greater adoption of artificial intelligence / machine learning (“AI/ML”) is the force expected to most transform healthcare services over the next decade, followed by the shift of care volume to alternative sites and the transition to value-based care. AI/ML is expected to drive the most improvement in areas such as clinical decision support, revenue cycle management and administration / operations.

5. Healthcare services leaders believe that a Republican victory in the 2024 U.S. Federal elections would lead to a more dovish antitrust environment and that a Democratic victory would lead to lower rebates for pharmacy benefits managers (“PBMs”). On the other hand, they do not believe the outcome of the elections will have a meaningful impact on value-based payment model participation, Medicare Advantage payments or the implementation of the drug pricing provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act (“IRA”).
