House sitting in France

Janine Marsh discovers a way to have a holiday in France for free…house sitting in France

It is a dilemma that many of us expats in France face – how to go on holiday when you have beloved pets that can’t come with you.

For some animals there are kennels, sometimes neighbours can help but that’s not always possible.

Take me – I have ducks, geese, chickens, dogs and cats. Now while I could put the dogs and cats in kennels and catteries it would double the cost of my holiday but, there’s no chicken hotel that I know of – and if you do, please let me know!

It’s not just expats with animals either – some expats just don’t feel happy going away and leaving their home empty. They worry about things going wrong in the house, burglary – and the grass and garden growing out of control while they’re away.

Andy Peck, a screenwriter from the UK looked into this problem when some years ago he stayed in Spain looking after the home of a lady who had animals and needed someone to care for them in her absence. He loved the experience and discovered that the lady wasn’t alone in wanting someone to house sit. He came up with a solution and house sitting was it.

And it’s a win-win.

Those with homes and pets to be looked after are happy.

Those looking for free accommodation in France are also happy – it’s like a free holiday except that you treat it like you own home and if something needs doing it’s your responsibility to do it – walk the dog, cut the grass, collect the post etc.

How to become a house sitter in France

To become a house sitter you need to join a house sitting agency online, create an online profile listing any previous pet care experience (from having owned your own pet to volunteering in animal centres etc), explaining what qualities make you the ideal sitter, why you want to house sit, references (such as character / employer etc) and photos.

How to become a home owner looking for a house sitter …

If you are looking for a house sitter then you can create a listing online, detailing a little about your home and where you are based, what your needs are, and information about the pets you need care for (if you have them). Including photos of your home and / or pets also helps. This listing is then securely emailed out to all registered sitters who have expressed an interest in house and pet sitting in your area. House sitters can then contact homeowners via our messaging system. A homeowner can view the profiles of the responders and their messages and reply. Browse house sitting profiles and contact those they are interested in directly to see if they would be interested in the opportunity.

Recommended Dos and Don’ts for both parties…

Communication is key for both parties. Using Skype (free phone/video calls) is popular and allows both parties to virtually beforehand. As a homeowner the onus is on you to carry out due diligence such as checking references and requesting a copy of their passport etc.

You may find that some companies offer a house sitting contract which can be downloaded and used to give guidelines on what each party should expect.

Ask questions – and check the match feels right.

Many homeowners also become house sitters – so they can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Insurance companies views on house sitters…

Statistically a home is much safer when using a house sitter than it is when left empty. [Editor’s note: check with your insurance company to be sure].

So, if you thought that a holiday in France or a holiday away from France was out of the question – or you’re looking for a practically free holiday in France – then house sitting in France just might be what you both need!

How to Start International House Sitting in 2023

Do you want to be an international house sitter?

I’m sure we are not the only ones out there who wanted to start house-sitting to see the world.

Well, not just to see the world, but to see the world as it is meant to be seen – like a local.

International house sitting gives you a unique opportunity to spend time in different locations and provide pet care.

Even better, you often get to spend weeks in different locations and get to experience all the best places to eat, drink & explore. This is thanks to the local knowledge of the homeowner. Who more often than not is very excited to show off their local area.

We started our house-sitting journey while living abroad in the UK.

At the time we really wish there was a guide that we could have followed to help us out. It was difficult starting off in a foreign place with no references, guides or anything like that. However, we figured it out.

International house sitting is not the hardest thing in the world – If you are well prepared.

International House Sitting - The Possibilities Are Endless

Do You Want to Travel for Free? If you’re wondering how YOU TO can travel for free, check out our guide on how to become a house sitter here

At the time of writing this article, I am sitting in Wattay International Airport, Laos.

I have just completed a house sitting assignment in Chiang Mai, Thailand (one of my favourite places of all time).

I am waiting to board a flight to my next house sitting assignment in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (however living on a boat in the Caribbean was one of my favourite assignments)

I had locked in both of these house sitting assignments by looking at the best house sitting websites a few months ago and have been keeping track of the whole process to piece this guide for you.

I hope this guide helps out anyone looking to get into international house sitting, or anyone who wants to be a house sitters locally in your own town or country.

Let’s get into it! In this guide I will cover:

Table of Contents

International House Sitting – An Overview

When we use the term ‘international house sitting’ we mean a house sitting assignment that is not in your home country. When we surveyed our community of over 70,000 house sitters and homeowners we found that 46% of house sitters, house sat internationally and 52% respondents said they plan to house sitting aboard.

Depending on the location these assignments can be dreamy, intimidating or even a little scary. Partially if you have never been to that country before.

Applying for a house sitting assignment overseas does require a lot of research and a fair bit of planning. However, in the end, all the hard work is well worth it.

Applying For An International House Sitting Assignment

Cats paw typing on an Apple computer

The first step to locking in any house sitting assignment is applying for the house sit.

When applying for an international house sit you need to keep a couple of things in mind:

  • Have you ever been to this country before? Do you want to travel to this country?
  • Do you know how to speak the local language? Will it be a problem?
  • Is this country safe? For your specific situation and politically etc
  • What is the cost of living there? Is it affordable for you?
  • Can you look after all the animals correctly? Do you have experience with these animals?
  • Can you travel to this country?
  • Would you prefer r medium term or long term house sits.

Once you have gone through these questions in your head and you can confidently say you are happy with all of these questions apply for the sit.

Nowadays there can be a lot of competition for some house sitting assignments, this does depend lots on the location and the particular sit, however, in most cases you will not be the only one applying.

Therefore you need to make your application really stand out to the homeowner .

Don’t just send a generic message to the homeowner. Write a thoughtful, personalized and truthful application letter. Tell the homeowner exactly why you want to look after their home and pets. It’s worth going that extra mile remember you do get free rent in exchange for house sitting .

When you apply from the heart you will be surprised at the responses you get. When you do get a reply do make sure you reply straight back, you don’t want to leave a reply for a day or two and miss your chance!

It is more than likely the homeowner is talking to more than one applicant!

Where to Find Housesitting Opportunities?

Are you looking for house sitting assignments now? Depending on what country we want to house sit, we have specific websites to look at to look. See our favorite house sitting sites and see if your travel plans are a perfect match for an assignment.

Committing to an International House sitting Assignment

Finding out the homeowners expectations.

Before committing to any house sit, particularly international house sits it is very important to talk to the homeowner about their expectations on the house sit. In my past experience, I have learned it is best to try to get on a Skype conversation with the homeowner.

Personally, I find it much easier to talk to a homeowner ‘face to face over video chat.

I also find that you can get a lot more information from the homeowner when talking conversationally compared to over email. Things that you should keep in mind to ask the homeowner:

  • How often they would like to be contacted while you are on the sit?
  • All the necessary information regarding their home and exactly what needs to be done while they are away (gardening, pool cleaning, plant watering, mail collection, general home upkeep).
  • What their expectations are in regards to food, internet, tv, utility bills etc
  • How far before the sit do they want you to arrive? How long after the sit do they want you to stay?

Here is what to ask what to ask home owners in house sitting interview, this will ensure you sound prepared and professional .

Once you have all these questions answered it’s time to move onto the pets.

Pet Sitters – Finding Out All The Information About The Pets

Dogs Walking On The Lead While International House Sitting

For the house owner, the most important part of the house sitting assignment is their animals.

Most homeowners treat their little fur babies like their own children (sometimes even better than their children). They want to ensure that they care for right while they are gone.

Ask yourself if you have had experience with that animal or particular breed before. If you haven’t had much experience with some animals or breeds this can potentially cause big issues on the sit.

Before you even consider being a house sitter you need to ask yourself do you really love animals? Before you commit to a house sitting assignment you need to think if you can care for the animals.

When talking to the homeowner about their animals some questions to ask can include:

  • The age of the animal/s.
  • If the animal/s have any medical conditions and if they take any medication.
  • If they do take medication, does the animal make it difficult or are they ok taking tablets / taking injections.
  • A breakdown of what the animal’s usual day-to-day schedule is. Ask for walking schedule, feeding schedule, what the animal usually does through the day. It is also important that you make it clear to the house owner to tell you all of this information truthfully.
  • Where the animal sleeps (will you be ok if the animal sleeps on your bed at night?).
  • Any off-limits areas for the animals.

Once you have all these questions answered you can then think to yourself if this house sitting assignment is for you and if you can exceed the homeowner’s expectations while looking after their home and animals.

House Sitting Without Animals

There are many opportunities to house sit without animals.

For example many people have second homes. They might feel more comfortable with someone in the home for the following reasons.

Garden maintenance

Pool maintenance

Here you’ll learn how to apply filters to find assignments without pets.

What Are The Visa Requirements?

Before committing to, or for that matter even applying for an international house sit, make sure you know what the visa situation is for that country for the entire duration of your sit.

What type of visa you will need will differ from country to country, the length of your stay, and what the passport is that you are traveling on is. Be sure to do the proper research into this.

Make sure you get your information from a government website. Your countries embassy will have all the information you need regarding what country you are planning on house sitting in.

Keep in mind the duration of your potential house sit, will it go for longer than you can stay in the country for on your visa?

Passport with visa

Working Holiday or Student Visa

Are you going to need to work while on the house sit? Will you be a student studying while sitting? Either of these things will change what kind of visa you will need. It will also change the visa application process.

Generally, a working holiday visa or a student visa will take a lot more time to get than a tourist visa or a visa on arrival.

When finding out information regarding visas always make sure you are using government websites, the last thing you want to do is take advice from someone online who doesn’t really know what they are talking about.

Tourist Visa

Will you be completing the sit as a tourist? You will need to find out how the tourist visa process works for the country you will be sitting in.

Some countries offer a visa on arrival which means you don’t have to apply for anything before arriving at immigration, however, for other countries, you will need to apply for a tourist visa in advance.

Again I can not stress enough to make sure you are getting your information regarding visas from a trustworthy (government) source.

Unfortunately advising immigration that you were told by someone on Facebook you don’t need to complete your visa in advance does not cut it!

Do You Need To Plan Your Visa Before You Leave Home?

Find out if you need to apply for your visa in advance before landing in the country. You don’t want to be that house sitter who doesn’t show up for their assignment because you were turned around at the border.

I will reiterate this one more time (it really is that important).

Make sure you know what visa you need, and also what other documents you need to go along with your application. This all can be anything from proof of funds to ongoing travel documents.

Also keep in mind that some countries require you to have 6 months (sometimes 1 year) left on your passport before it expires to be let into the country, again make sure you do your research into this before it’s too late.

If you have to get an emergency passport a week before you sit, it is going to cost you a lot!

The Costs Involved With International House Sitting

There are some costs involved with international house sitting. Once you leave your home country things do start to add up.

A lot of the time there is no way around these costs and it is just something that goes with this lifestyle. Some of the more important costs to think about before international house sitting include.

Question mark written on book

Looking to Save Some Money on Travel? We have put together the cheapest airports to fly into Europe that way you can spend your money on what really matters..more travel!

Does The Homeowner Pay For My Travel?

Without a doubt, this is the number 1 question I get asked.

Unfortunately, the answer is no 99% of the time.

I’m sure there are cases where the homeowner has covered the cost of travel, but unfortunately, that is not common practice.

All travel costs will come down to you. Costs to keep in mind:

  • Your visa (taxes, application fees, entry fees).
  • Passport (new passport, passport renewal).
  • Airline costs (taxes, ticket, luggage and food).
  • Transportation to and from airports (from your home to the airport, transfers at airports, transportation from the airport to the house sitting assignment.
  • Return or ongoing flights.
  • Travel insurance.

The reality is travel can be expensive, think about how much you will be spending before you commit to the house sit.

Can you afford flights to the house sit?

Flight Time Board

Flying Between House Sits Doesn’t Have To Be Expensive!

Are you a little worried that this lifestyle will be expensive? Don’t worry there are always ways that you can keep costs down! To help keep the cost of flights down we always use Skyscanner or find out what the cheap airports to fly into are!

Travel Insurance For House Sitters

Travel insurance is generally something that is overlooked when thinking about house sitting internationally.

Depending on the country, the duration, and exactly what policy you will be requiring travel insurance can get quite expensive. However, travel insurance is something that is very necessary when travelling abroad particularly when you will be looking after someone else’s home and animals.

It is always cheaper to look into and purchase travel insurance before you leave on your trip. Do make sure your policy covers you for everything you will be doing while you will be on your house sitting assignment.

Will you be riding scooters, driving, surfing, bike riding, snowboarding, horse riding or skydiving while you are away? Make sure your policy covers these things if you are. They will generally make your policy more expensive. However, still much, much cheaper than a trip to the hospital in a foreign country.

International House Sitting Insurance

Looking For Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is VERY IMPORTANT but it’s something a lot of people leave until the very last minute or totally forget about! We use World Nomads for our insurance . They allow you to buy a policy when abroad and add on new locations to your policy, which is perfect for our way of traveling. They also have very competitive rates for the huge range of services they offer!

Money For The Duration of the House Sit

This one is a little bit of a no-brainer, but make sure you have enough money for the duration of your house sitting assignment.

Find out how much you will need for the entire duration of your stay. There are some really good tools out there these days to find out the general cost of living for most cities in the world.

Calculate how much you will need and even make a budget for while you will be there, you will be surprised how much you can save when you have a budget.

Where is Dubai?

Need To Find The Cost of Living?

We use Nomadlist to find out the general living costs of a new city. Nomad list gets its information from real people on the ground and is really accurate! Find out everything form the price of a coffee to a cell phone data plan!

Emergency Funds

It’s never fun thinking about what if something goes wrong, but it’s essential that you think about what if all goes pear-shaped and I have to go home ASAP.

Anytime that you are traveling abroad it is smart to have an emergency fund, make sure you have enough to be able to get yourself home that day.

The last thing you want to be doing is putting an emergency flight home on your credit card.

How Will You Get to the House Sitting Assignment?

When arriving in a new country, a partially foreign countries it can be difficult to get your bearings and find your way anywhere.

The key here is to do your proper research before you leave. The homeowner should be able to help you out with your best options for transportation or even in the best case be able to pick you up from somewhere. However, it is best to not rely on that.

When it comes to planning your route to the house sit Google Maps or an offline maps application like Maps.me can be your best friend for finding your way to a new housesitting assignment.

You will need to figure out if you will catch a taxi, Uber, Grab, public transport, or shuttle from the airport. In some places, it is a cheaper (and faster) option to Uber, especially if you have more than one person with you.

The best thing to do is do your own research on your specific location.

Will You Need an International Drivers Licence?

Depending on what driver’s license you hold and what country you are going to there will be different rules regarding your driving. If you are planning on hiring a car or a scooter for the duration of your house sit this is something you will need to look into.

For example, my last house sit in Thailand required me to take the cat to the vet every day and asked if I would like to take her scooter. However, in Thailand, you require an international driver’s licence (mine had expired around 2 months ago) so I had to decline her offer and opted to walk instead.

Is it safe to drive in the country of the house sit?

Take Thailand again for example. There are lots and lots of other cars/ scooters on the road and it’s not the safest driving environment for a foreigner – the police are also fairly corrupt and will target foreigners and fine them for next to nothing.

Sometimes it’s best to avoid driving altogether to avoid finding yourself in a bad situation.

Using The Homeowners Vehicle

Car sitting in driveway

Has the homeowner offered you their car to make life easier for you (and the pets) while on a sit?

It is an overwhelmingly nice gesture and is something that doesn’t happen too often, however, when it does make sure you are on the ball with what you need to know.

Learning the Local Road Rules

Different countries have different road rules, some are not so different from your home country – take Australia and New Zealand for example.

In both countries, you drive on the left-hand side of the road and nearly every road rule is the same. However, some countries road rules are very, very different.

To be safe it always pays to get a copy of the local road rules (many of which can be found online) and read up on them.

Having The Correct Licence

I will use New Zealand and Australia as an example again.

As a New Zealander holding a full New Zealand driver’s licence I can drive in Australia for up to 3 months without needing to get an international or Australian driver’s licence.

If i opt for swapping my license over it is as simple as going into the local Department of Transportation Office, doing an eye test and paying the transferal fee. Easy. I have an Australian licence. The hardest part is waiting for 2 – 3 hours while your number is called.

However, somewhere like Thailand, I require an international drivers licence. In New Zealand to get an international drivers licence you need to apply along with your required documents and send it away, this process can take a few weeks to get everything sorted out.

So do your own research and be aware of your licence and the conditions of driving in another country long before going.

Vehicle Insurance

Does your travel insurance cover drive a motor vehicle? It’s better to find this out before you even think about driving someone else vehicle.

Does the homeowner’s insurance cover you driving their motor vehicle?

In a lot of countries, it is illegal for you to drive someone else’s car without insurance. Often this will mean the homeowner will need to call their insurance company and register you as a driver of their car and add you to their policy.

If that is the case you will need to speak with the homeowner and come up with an agreement for who will be paying for that insurance cost.

If you are driving the homeowner’s car – who will be paying for petrol? This is again something that you and the homeowner will need to discuss.

Often times when you are driving the car for errands of the homeowner you will not need to, but if you are out on a leisure trip you will need to pay for petrol.

On Road Costs

Will you be going through toll roads? What if the car breaks down or you need to service the car?

Again these are all things that will differ from sit to sit and you will need to discuss and come to an agreement with the homeowner over.

Car or Scooter Hire

Will you be renting a car or scooter for the duration of your trip? If you are this is something that you will have to pay for and is not something that the homeowner has to concern themselves with.

As an applicant of an international house sit you need to be aware that in some circumstances you will need to get yourself transportation if the house sit is not in a larger city.

This is another cost that you may need to plan for.

Payment For House Sitting

Do I Get Paid For International House Sitting?

How Much Do I Get Paid For House Sitting?

This is the second most asked question we get.

Unfortunately, unless you are sitting in the USA, you are not paid for your house sitting assignment. I have never sat in the US before so I don’t really know how it works over there, late 2020 we should be house sitting in Mexico and the United States so will update this post as I know!

But to be honest I would feel very weird charging someone to look after their home and pets. House sitting is a neutral agreement between the homeowner and the house sitter and both parties get a good benefit from the agreement.

The homeowner has someone who can look after their home and pets in a way that a kennel/cattery and someone coming to check on their home just can’t provide.

Homeowners also save a lot of money on expensive kennel/cattery fees.

For the house sitter, you get free accommodation, and in my eyes, there is no need for money to ever change hands.

Like a lot of full-time house sitters, I have a day job from which I work remotely from. So when I am house sitting I am earning a living wage.

I am more than happy to house sit for free accommodation and for the joy of hanging out with animals all day. I have worked hard upskilling myself to be able to work from anywhere, at anytime, on my own terms.

If you are looking to internationally house sit long term or medium term upskilling yourself to work this way is potentially something that you should look into.

For me house sitting is not about making money it is about traveling and having the opportunity to enjoy the company of pets as I see the world.

Do I Pay For Bills While House Sitting?

This is something that will differ from house sit to house sit. You will need to speak with each homeowner about this.

Sometimes homeowners will be happy to cover all bills while you are looking after their home but will ask you to ‘go easy’ on the air conditioning or the water.

This is understandable and something that I am very cautious over regardless.

For longer sits, more often than not the homeowner might ask you to chip in for the bills, mainly things like Wifi, heating, air conditioning or water, which is understandable too.

The best thing to do to avoid any awkward situations when the bills come is to talk to the homeowner about this stuff before committing to the sit.

Safety While House Sitting

Safety is a big concern for many travelers and this can be broken down into the following:

  • Personal safety  – Are you going alone? Is the location safe for someone who is going to be travelling alone?
  • Location safety  – Is the location safe? Think weather-wise, political climate wise and general area safety of the home.
  • Animal safety  – Is the area you are going to be house sitting animal safe? Take Australia for example. When house sitting in summer and you are walking dogs you have to be very aware that Australia has poisonous snakes (among other poisonous animals). You need to be very careful if you are walking the dog off lead and stay vigilant at all times.

Dog In A Safe Neighourhood

Do you know what to do if your animals get in trouble?

It is highly recommended that you complete an animal first aid course before you head out on your first house it. You never know when it might just save an animal’s life.

Find out about the local area, are there any dangers? Is the animal allergic to anything?

When house sitting somewhere like Australia it is a must that you know how to deal with snake bites. Knowing what to do can save an animal’s life in minutes.

Do I Need To Get Vaccinations?

Depending on what country the house sit is in you might need to get vaccinated.

This is something that you will need to do in advance and something that you will need to think about budget-wise.

For most first-world countries you should be fine, however, it does pay to look into this wherever you are going.

Think about if there have been any recent outbreaks of disease or if there are any serious health risks about where you are planning to go.

The Language Barrier

Will you be able to communicate with the locals in an emergency situation or get by in day-to-day life where the house sit is going to be?

When travelling it always pays to at least try and learn the very basics of the local language.

This has many benefits and is something that you should seriously consider before applying for an international house sit.

What Happens in An Emergency Situation on an International House Sitting Assignment

Sometimes bad things happen and there is nothing you can do about it. There are two different scenarios where this can happen.

Help written in matches

An on Sit House Emergency

What happens if something happens to the home while the homeowner is away?

This is something that you need to discuss with the homeowner. You need to make sure the home and contents are covered while you are going to be looking after the home.

Make sure you have all the local emergency numbers (and you have the ability to converse to get help!). This includes fire, police, ambulance.

What happens if something happens to the pet while the homeowner is away? Make sure that you discuss this with homeowners. Every homeowner will tackle this issue differently.

At the very least you need to make sure you are at the very least prepared with the local vet’s details.

An Animal Emergency

What happens if something happens to the animal while sitting?

Sometimes you are looking after older, or sick animals where there is potentially something serious can happen. It is essential that you talk to the homeowner about this and what they want to be done if something is to happen to the animal.

Its not a nice thing to talk about, but it is much better to talk about it beforehand rather than when it has happened.

Find out the local vets, numbers and all other relevant information about the pet.

In general, it is important that you have complete a pet first aid course so you know what to do in an emergency. It could be the difference between your pet’s safety.

A Natural Disaster

Some things are even more out of our hands. What if there is a flood, earthquake, hurricane, tsunami or eruption?

Make sure you are aware of any potential natural disaster threats and are aware of the steps you need to take if something does happen.

Think about pet safety, home safety and personal safety.

At the very least you want to know what the local natural disaster process is, every town should have action plans in place for each different type of natural disaster that could potentially occur in the area.

An Emergency Back Home

What if there is an emergency back home that you need to go back home for?

This is something to think about particularly for single house sitters especially. When house sitting as a couple it is not such a big deal because there is always someone who could stay at the sit until the end.

As awkward as it may be, bring this up with the homeowner if you are traveling alone – is there someone who could step in for you if you MUST go home? Or are their alternative arrangements you could make?

Is International House Sitting For You?

I think (hope) I have covered everything that I can think of regarding what you need to know when thinking about international house sitting.

Depending on the location you are going it can take a lot of planning. There is a lot of information and things to think about in this post – this post was not designed to scare away anyone from house-sitting internationally but to make you aware of the planning that is involved.

House sitting is a great lifestyle and one that is very rewarding and exciting.

You get to see the world in a different way from traditional travel. With the right planning, anyone can start house sitting in any country. If that is for a full-time lifestyle, for a holiday getaway or as a cheap retirement option.

How To Find Your First International House Sitting Assignment

There are several different places that we would recommend for finding an international house sit.

The platforms below are where we find most of our house-sitting assignments. If you would like a more in-depth breakdown of each site you can check out our guide to the  best house sitting sites  to see which one might be right for you.

  • Trusted House Sitters – Want 20% off your membership? Click here and it will automatically applied at checkout
  • Aussie House Sitters
  • Mind A Home
  • House Carers

Although you can not apply for sits when you are not a member of a platform you can have brows around first – this is a great way of seeing what is available on each platform before purchasing a membership.

One great site that we use is called House Sit Search, you put in your dates and location and it searches most of the house sitting platforms out there and brings back all of the results.

This saves you a lot of time looking through various different platforms for a house sit.

What To Do After Your International House Sitting Assignment?

This is also something we get asked a lot.

Once the house sitting assignment is over what do you do?

Obviously, we can’t line up house sits perfectly one after another every time. Generally, we will have a few days or weeks between assignments.

We use this time to explore a country further or catch up on work. Unfortunately, that means we do have to pay for accommodation sometimes.

Generally, we will use Airbnb for accommodation when we are not house sitting. It is often the cheapest option out there and it allows us to get a comfortable home that we can get work done (unfortunately working out of a hostel usually just isn’t comfortable or productive).

We Want To Encourage Help You!

As you can probably tell from this post we absolutely love house sitting. It has allowed us to travel and live in different destinations all around the world.

We intend to keep on house sitting for the foreseeable future and love spreading the word and helping others start their own amazing journey.

We hope this post inspires, helps, and encourages people to get out there and start house sitting. Whether that be locally or internationally.

Thanks Jay – this is a very useful post and certainly things we think are important as well. We also don’t sit for pay. We like the relationship of a mutual exchange. It’s not perfect but is a much nicer arrangement.

Thank you for your feedback!

Being paid for Being paid would be great for house sitting but why complicate something that works well right?

Do you guys house sit / on the road full time?

Sorry for all the comments

This is a very in depth post and has given me a lot to think about before I pack up and start calling myself an international house sitter. Have you ever arrived and the house has not been as expected?

Thanks Cherish I hope it comes in handy for you 🙂

Sometimes homeowner do over glorify their homes, however, in our experience we have never arrived to any nasty surprises or anything that has changed our feelings about the sit. Sometimes thing do happen and things break before the home owners goes away etc but that is to be expected!

A review on TrustPilot from one of our travelling housesitters from Australia, Robin. He sums up the discovery of new countries by house sitting.

New experiences, new places, new friends. This is my second pet sit with Housesitmatch. My first was in a small town in the south of France, and my second in Buckinghamshire, UK. Initially, I was mostly interested in spending time with the animals I was going to be looking after while traveling and working, but during my time I realised it was also a unique opportunity to visit places I hadn’t been to, test a new lifestyle away from the city and meet new people. Lamia is always there to help, and the members are thoroughly screened, making for a great community of both pet owners and sitters.

International pet housesitting

House sitting and pet sitting through a recognised trustworthy network can provide fantastic international opportunities for house sitting and pet sitting your way around the world, for example by pet sitting like a friend in exchange for free accommodation.

Jill and Gavin are long term full-time Australian housesitters. They enjoy house sitting away from home and especially abroad. They were once home owners themselves,. They’ve been travelling for seven years, visited five continents and housesat in 18 countries.

Starting as international pet sitters

Since their first assignment nearly a decade ago they’ve answered housesitting adverts saying sitters required from the Czech Republic to Western Australia. They’ve taken jobs abroad outside of their native Australia following tourist trails to North, Central and  South America.

They’ve done long term housesitting in Europe taken a dog sit looking after house and pet, to multi pet sits with dogs cats, birds, guinea pigs and all kinds of other animals as their video will show. Travel agents also do house sitting abroad!

Dianne and Mike are a professional Canadian couple who decided last year to take a grey gap year , so they sold everything at home in Canada and started housesitting through the HouseSit Match network.

Based in the United Kingdom HouseSitMatch is a house and pet sitting network that can offer you international house sitting assignments.

They joined our network as new sitters. However, they had tested the waters by doing local housesitting in their home town to see if they liked it. After a while they decided housesitting and pet sitting suited them and they would enjoy travelling by house sitting for free accommodation.

International house sitting

How they started international housesitting.

By submitting to an ID and police check, building a good profile online, offering descriptions of their pet and property experience, their motivations for housesitting they have been able to secure a house sitting assignment and have travelled throughout the United Kingdom and across Europe.

Some of the most popular housesit assignment are for housesitting in Spain .

In just over a year they’ve paid very little for accommodation. Just a few days here and there in hostels between housesits. They’ve even extended their grey gap year. They took the TEOFL exams and so they teach to supplement their portable professional income as travel agents.

House sitting adventure

Extending a grey gap year.

Their grey gap year is now turning into a long term housesitting adventure across Europe. With every housesitting and petsitting assignment they are building reviews on their profile and a reputation for being reliable housesitters. Dianne and Mike have undertaken many international housesitting assignments now but they tell us their favourites are the pet housesitting placements.

One petsitting assignment was for an Akita dog lover in the UK. They’ve also cared for houses and pets in Spain, Ireland, France and taken on a house and pet sit near Oxford UK. They enjoy travelling and living in a home and pet care is a pleasurable service they can offer in exchange for the opportunity to live in beautiful new surroundings and spend time to explore new tourist trails.

This helps Dianne with her work as a travel agent. They cared for dogs, cats and hens in this English home, and horses, donkeys and lovely cats in Spain. They say that HouseSitMatch is one of their favourite pet sitting websites.

Trusted house sitters

Pet owners with holiday homes abroad use services for house sitting.

house sitting abroad in a villa in the South of France

The investment of a holiday home or any property in another country comes with benefits and responsibilities. Finding people to help you care for that property requires a degree of trust.

If you keep pets and a garden in your property abroad, their safety, care and maintenance is also an important consideration. According to PetKeepers pet housesitting is one really affordable option to consider.

Free house sitters through a trusted house sitting website

If your property is in another country, then organising house sitters for care maintenance is an important factor in the success of your investment.

House sitters can care for your property and garden. And indeed they also care for any pets you keep in your holiday home. The housesitting is in exchange for free accommodation.

Like old fashioned barter this arrangement is facilitated safely through a website which takes fundamental security precautions.

Second homeowners with multiple properties

If you’re a second homeowner it can be hard managing both properties when you only live in one.

This is when using a house sitting network to find a house sitter to care for your property is really helpful. Also if you are managing a property portfolio organising house carers and house sitting can help improve security. Care for your properties by ensuring they are occupied as well as cared for. It is important to ensure that gardens are maintained especially if you’re absent as this is a clear sign of an unoccupied and vulnerable property.

Trusted International House Sitters Share Their Stories

Jill and gavin’s house sitting adventure.

Jill and Gavin, full-time Australian house sitters, have travelled to 18 countries through house sitting opportunities. They’ve cared for pets and homes in Europe, South America, and beyond. Their love for pet sitting and exploring new destinations makes house sitting  as a way to travel on a budget an ideal lifestyle for them.

Dianne and Mike’s Grey Gap Year

Canadian couple Dianne and Mike started their house sitting adventure with HouseSitMatch after deciding to take a grey gap year. They sold everything in Canada and embarked on international house sitting assignments across the UK and Europe.

Bragi Jonsson’s Icelandic Adventure

At 60 years old, Bragi Jonsson, an Icelandic security guard and part-time shepherd, embraced house sitting abroad as a way to escape the harsh Icelandic Winter. His house sitting journey led him to Marbella, Spain, where he cared for pets and fell in love with the rewarding lifestyle.

Friends tell friends about a good housesitter

So one house and pet sit led to another, and through the HouseSit Match pet sitting website he answered housesit adverts asking ‘sitters required’. Then two more long term house sitting assignments in Europe were secured. This kept him busy until his return to Iceland in the Spring for lambing season.

Over the years Bragi (aka Bravo on the HouseSitMatch housesitters’ directory) has developed a number of strong relationships with his matched homeowners, and now does the occasional  return housesit .

House sitting in another country

Pet owners who need housesitting abroad .

One advantage of pet sitters from HouseSitMatch is that they exchange their time for free accommodation. This means there is no cost to you other than the membership fee. And rather than take paid house sitting jobs abroad they can travel on a tourist visa if they don’t take payment.

You will have a choice of pet lovers to choose from. View their pet experience in their profile – we make it easy for you to choose a suitable match.

Travel by housesitting

Housesitting offers a way to travel further afield.

He says though he hasn’t yet discovered Western Australia he would like to visit. And friends in the housesitting community suggest that he might enjoy Central America and South America for the climate. As an Icelandic traveller these are all great opportunities for house sitting away from a cold Icelandic Winter that he finds appealing.

If you have pets at your property abroad you may also prefer to have them cared for in the home rather than in a kennels. Our housesitting arrangement will save you the costs of a fee charging pet minder. This is a considerably more affordable option.

Most vets agree that pets cared for in the home experience minimal separation anxiety.  This is important particularly for rescued animals who will often take some time to settle into a new environment.

Discover the array of career opportunities

CAREERS in the INTERNATIONAL hotel, restaurant and tourism sectors

Restaurants, hotel groups and other tourism facilities make up one of France’s most dynamic industries. Hospitality management offers a wide range of opportunities – some of which you may have overlooked. Digital communications, oenology, ecotourism, events, luxury brand marketing – the sheer variety of positions in the hospitality industry may well surprise you.

Comment devenir chef de projet événementiel ?

The hospitality industry at a glance

The hotel, restaurant and tourism sectors continues to offer attractive career prospects. Consider these persuasive figures:

  • €70 billion in sales
  • 6th largest employer in France
  • more than 200,000 companies in France
  • more than 300,000  job vacancies .

The hospitality industry is a highly appealing proposition, with a host of roles across hotels and restaurants and a constantly evolving landscape. Naturally enough, the trend is for ethical and eco-friendly concepts.

Digital transformation has also developed restaurateurs’ imagination – take the emergence of dark kitchens, for instance. Today in France, there are more than 1,500 of these virtual restaurants where chefs prepare dishes ordered online. This market is worth in excess of €3.3 billion .

While the luxury sector generates €920 billion, luxury hotels and high-end tourism account for 64% of this market.4 Even student residences are offering a more complete and innovative array of services. Business hotels are becoming more functional and welcoming, and youth hostels are also undergoing a transformation into full-fledged living spaces. These upheavals are giving free rein to creative flair and inventive new offerings. The dynamic nature of the sector partly explains the high employment rate of Vatel graduates .

What profiles are sought after?

Hotel management roles seem to offer particularly good prospects, but they demand highly specific skills:

  • sales and marketing strategy
  • human and financial resource management
  • analytical and decision-making methods
  • managerial techniques
  • product and service retailing
  • knowledge of culinary arts and oenology

Vatel offers high-quality training courses in the field of Hotel Management . You can enroll at a Vatel hospitality business school after your high-school diploma to do a Bachelor’s in Hospitality , then continue with an MBA.

Students taking an MBA in Hospitality can do their fifth and final year at a Vatel campus to specialize in:

  • Luxury Management
  • Revenue/Yield Management
  • Event Management
  • International Wine & Spirits Management
  • Entrepreneurial Management
  • Experiential Tourism Management
  • Sales & E-marketing Management
  • Finance & Project Development
  • Resort Management
  • Ecotourism Management
  • American Hospitality Management and International Business

The Vatel Group has five campuses in France – in Paris, Lyon, Nîmes, Bordeaux and Nantes – and more than 50 worldwide.

What career options are there in the hospitality sector?

After graduating from a renowned hospitality business school, you have extensive prospects. In France, in Europe or worldwide, rigor and refinement are sought after and rewarded. Whether in a Horeca (hotel, restaurant, café) business, a five-star hotel, a travel agency or elsewhere, here are some examples of hospitality jobs to consider:

  • brand manager
  • maître d’hôtel
  • sales manager
  • Ecolodge Director
  • Luxury Brand Manager
  • Events Manager
  • Wines & Spirits Merchant…

Check out our job factsheets for more details on the career opportunities this market has to offer. Whether you are considering tourism or hotel group management, there is a multitude of permanent positions out there.

Why choose Vatel?

Enroll at Vatel and you choose the best hospitality management school . You will study for a degree certified in the RNCP (France’s National Directory of Professional Certifications), which is recognized by the industry, and benefit from more than 40 years of experience .

The near-100% employment rate of Vatel graduates is due chiefly to:

  • the experience that students acquire throughout their degree (internship, role playing, exchange program, etc.);
  • the alternation of theory weeks in the classroom and hands-on professional practice;
  • innovative teaching methods applied by teachers who act as coaches;
  • a large, high-quality network that cares about students’ success.

The profiles of Vatel graduates, combining strategic and operational skills, are highly rated by recruiters. And with the solid skillset acquired at Vatel, you can also help shape tomorrow’s hospitality industry by creating your own business or becoming a Hotel Director. Got a question? Need more details? These Vatel alumni testimonials will probably help.

Jobs in France

France is one of the most desirable places in the world to work abroad as an expat. As one of the world’s wealthiest countries with a very high standard of living, France has always been a centrally influential cultural, economic, and political force in European affairs. Not to mention it is one of the most scenically beautiful nations in the world, with sprawling hills and vineyards spanning from the magnificent cliffs of Normandy in the West to the towering Alps in the East. Working in France can truly be the experience of a lifetime whatever your field of interest.

There are many places to find work in France, including away from the cities. Living in the rural areas of France and working in a small town or in the countryside can be a sublime experience for expats. France is a large and diverse country, so do your research carefully when determining what kind of environment you want to work and live in.

Paris is the obvious place to start when seeking jobs in France. The City of Love is an ideal place to find work in France, however long your stay and whatever your area of employment. Today Paris is one of the most globally connected cities on the planet and one of the most influential in terms of film, fashion, literature, and artistic excellence.

Marseilles , Lyon , and Toulouse , are other popular cities for jobs abroad in France that offer expats a more authentically French experience for working abroad in France, as they are not so iconically global. Lyon is known as the Capital of Lights because of the annual Fête des Lumières festival, Marseilles is France’s largest commercial port city sitting pristinely on the Mediterranean coast, and Toulouse is one of the primary French hubs of education.

The types of jobs in France available to foreign workers depend primarily on whether you plan to live in France temporarily or you plan on settling in and pursuing a full time career. For example, there are many opportunities to work in France as a teacher , au pair , or on a vineyard, but these openings tend to be temporary and rarely last more than one year.

Business. With major cities that have a global influence such as Paris, business jobs in France are great opportunities to get to experience the French culture and also gain credible work experience. You may also have the experience while working in France to gain work experience in French.

Hospitality. Working in France bring many opportunities in the field of hospitality, from restaurants to hotels, you can pretend you’re a local Frenchman while helping serve the tourist, and local, community.

Culinary Arts and Cooking . If you are a food lover by day and cuisinier by night, France may be the perfect place for you to stir the pot and add a sprinkle of international flare to your cooking. You will be able to learn and grow personally and professionally, and also enjoy the food!

France has one of the highest performing economies in the world and as such is a fairly expensive place to live and work abroad. General costs of living in big cities, such as Paris, will be significantly higher than in the countryside, so keep this in mind when determining where to pursue job opportunities in France. Foreign workers are often compensated via other means if working in France is only temporarily. This compensation may be room and board, for example. However, full time salaries vary heavily between fields of employment and location.

The type of accommodation you will have available while working in France depends on the type of employment you are seeking. Temporary workers are often offered the opportunity to live with a local host family if they are, say, au pairing or working as an English tutor.

However, most expats in France end up finding themselves their own apartment or flat to live in to provide a more independent lifestyle while working in France. It will be much cheaper to start by renting out a room, then perhaps moving into your own place once you have saved up the money to do so.

If you wish to work in France more permanently, the situation becomes trickier because you will have to go through the process of obtaining a work and residential visa. If you are from the European Union then you are not required to obtain a work visa to pursue jobs in France. International workers from other countries, on the other hand, face a slightly more difficult situation - work visas have to be endorsed and organized by your host employer, so you will need to find work in France before actually moving to the country. Check your Embassy for the most up-to-date visa information.

Finding work abroad in France is an extremely romantic notion to most, but one well worth pursuing if you are willing to commit to learning the language and immersing yourself fully in this wonderful culture. If you are willing to embrace the culture, the language, and the people, you will gain incredible work experience that will help open doors for you future. Working abroad in France will set you apart from your counterparts in job searches in the future—if you ever end up leaving (visa pending, of course)!

French is the language of business across the country and for most jobs abroad in France you will be expected to have at least basic competency in French. There are some temporary jobs in France which do not require you to be fluent in French, but the locals will be much more welcoming if you are able to speak the language. Many French people do speak English, but it is well worth the effort to learn the language so that you can fully experience French culture.

If you are seriously considering working abroad, then there are few places better than France to begin your journey.

Tourism in France

  • Partager sur Linkedin

Tourism is a major part of the French economy, representing close to 8% of GDP and 2 million direct and indirect jobs. It is also a recognized soft power asset abroad, and F rance has been the world’s leading tourist destination for years. A record 90 million international tourists visited France in 2019, including its overseas communities.

A sector affected by COVID-19

In 2020, the sector has been hit hard by the COVID-19 public health crisis, leading international tourist revenue to drop by almost half in the first seven months of the year .

Globally, Europe is the second hardest-hit region, behind the Asia-Pacific, seeing a drop in visits of 66% in the first half of the year. The drop in French and foreign tourist spending in France over 2020 is estimated at between 30% and 35%. However, France does appear to be resisting better than its European neighbours , thanks to its solid domestic market.

France’s support to the sector

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs promotes and supports the tourism sector through innovative measures suited to the industry’s needs . This cooperative approach led to the creation of the Tourism Sector Committee (CFT) in January 2020, chaired by the Minister of State, Mr Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne.

Its aim is to jointly design effective tourism policies, working on four themes: jobs and training , sustainable development , digitalization , and regulations and competitiveness .

The work carried out at the CFT should lead to the signing of a tourism sector contract to provide effective responses suited to the industry’s needs.

A concerted response to the crisis

The CFT has been particularly useful and effective in addressing the concertation and emergency needs caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Since the beginning of the public health crisis, the committee has met almost weekly.

Its work has helped analyse the challenges and priority needs of the sector in order to seek appropriate solutions. It has helped highlight how numerous and diverse tourism-dependent businesses are , each with its own issues.

Various tools and measures have been established during the crisis:

  • A monthly Atout France/Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau barometer;
  • Webinars, benchmarks, surveys and studies by Atout France;
  • The “This summer I’m visiting France” campaign from June to September 2020 in order to promote domestic tourism;
  • An interactive map of tourism venues and services, carried out with ADN Tourisme, to provide information to more than 10 million people on social media. This initiative contributed actively to promoting stays in France among tourists from both France and neighbouring countries.

The measures adopted to safeguard the tourism sector during the public health crisis

Alongside the CFT’s work since the beginning of the crisis, the Minister of State has also met with institutional and private stakeholders from each French region in order to best adapt the Government’s support to the sector.

Tourism companies have enjoyed all the emergency measures adopted by the Government in response to the pandemic’s economic consequences:

  • Support for jobs, through the partial employment measure, which the sector has used widely;
  • Support for companies’ cash flow through the Government-guaranteed loan (PGE) and the solidarity fund, open until the end of 2020, as well as certain social contribution exemptions;
  • Cancellation of instalments of rent and fees for use of public land for SMEs, particularly during administrative closure.

The Government has also announced the creation of a “season PGE”, capped at the turnover of the best three months of 2019, and the postponement of bank repayment instalments over 12 months.

These discussions also contributed to drafting a specific Government plan for the sector’s recovery , totalling €18 billion. The specific recovery plan was announced by the Prime Minister on 14 May 2020, during the fifth meeting of the Interministerial Tourism Committee (CIT). It includes the creation of an investment fund of €1.3 billion managed by the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations and Bpifrance in order to foster the emergence of more sustainable tourism, more digital and better distributed across the country. The France Tourisme Ingénierie programme, managed by Atout France, has also been granted increased capacity of €29 million in order to support local authorities and private stakeholders wishing to improve the tourism offering.

Moreover, the recovery plan presented by the Government in early September 2020 includes the c reation of a sustainable tourism fund with €50 million to foster the adaptation of tourism activities. Restaurants and tourist accommodation providers will receive financial support (grants) in order to cover the costs of investments for the transition and development of sustainable tourism projects. The French Agency for the Ecological Transition (ADEME) will be the leader for the deployment of this fund, in close liaison with local government in order to address specific needs.

The plan has since been strengthened, particularly as regards the implementation of support measures for the sector such as widening the list of companies eligible under the tourism plan, extending 100% coverage of payroll costs under partial employment, enhancement of the solidarity fund and expansion of the scope of the “season PGE” programme, in constant dialogue with industry stakeholders.

According to WTTC, More Than 70,000 Vacancies in Travel & Tourism Threaten France’s Economic Recovery

french tourism jobs

According to WTTC, more than 70,000 vacancies in Travel & Tourism threaten France’s economic recovery Aviation to be the one of the worst hit industries across the sector WTTC provides measures for addressing the staff shortages in the sector

London, UK: A new study by the World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC ) has revealed the recovery of France’s Travel & Tourism is at risk as more than 70,000 jobs remain unfilled across the country. The research looked into labour shortages across France and other major Travel & Tourism destinations, such as the U.S., Italy, Spain, the UK and Portugal. According to the global tourism body, the supply of labour could fail to match the increased travel demand across the sector, which is estimated to be near pre-pandemic levels by the third quarter of 2022. The data shows France is expected to see a shortfall of 71,000 jobs, with one in 19 vacancies left unfilled this year. In 2019, before the pandemic, more than 1.3 million people were employed by Travel & Tourism in France. But by 2020, nearly 175,000* had lost their jobs. France saw the beginning of the recovery in 2021, with a 40.6% growth to the sector’s contribution to the national economy. However, staff shortages have been prevalent in the country, with thousands of vacancies that remain unfilled, putting the sector under pressure. WTTC analysis shows France’s aviation is expected to be one of the worst affected, struggling to find candidates for nearly one in three (38%) job postings, while travel agencies could also face one third (39%) of staff shortages. Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO said: “The sector needs more staff to meet the current demand. The widespread travel disruption being experienced by millions of French holidaymakers is clear evidence of this. “If these 71,000 jobs remain unfilled, they could threaten the revival of Travel & Tourism businesses up and down the country, which have struggled for more than two years from the impact of the pandemic.” Last week WTTC revealed that up to 1.2 million jobs across the EU will remain unfulfilled, with hospitality, aviation, and travel agencies being the most affected. Some of the key measures identified in the report for both governments and the private sector to address the talent gap are: 1.    Facilitate labour mobility across international borders, with more favourable visa policies  2.    Enable flexible and remote working where feasible – allowing part time or contractor-based opportunities, where possible 3.    Ensure decent work and competitive employee benefits and compensation packages 4.     Attract talent by improving the perception of jobs and promoting viable career paths with growth opportunities 5.     Develop and support a skilled workforce through comprehensive educational programs, as well as upskilling and reskilling current talent 6.    Adopt innovative technological and digital solutions to alleviate pressure on staff, improve daily operations and provide an enhanced customer experience. The global tourism body believes by implementing these measures, Travel & Tourism businesses will be able to attract more workers. This in turn would enable the sector to meet the ever-growing consumer demand and further speed up its recovery, which is the backbone to generating economic well-being across the country.
