6.25. Assignments Evaluation
New assignment evaluation experience.
The new Assignment Evaluation Experience is part of a redesign of all assessable tools that was completed in 2022. This experience allows instructors to better review and evaluate both discussion topics and individual participants, without changing their workflow.
The New Assignment Evaluation Experience includes the following features:
- The user context bar includes a menu to choose a learner, and another menu to choose a submission. On the user submission list, files are grouped by submission without repeating comments to make it easier to distinguish between submissions.
- The evaluation pane divider is draggable to suit a user’s preferences and screen size. Rubrics are located at the top of the evaluation panel.
- The overall grade remains as an icon that indicates if that grade is tied to the grade book. Existing outcomes and competency web components are also visible.
- You can provide feedback for the submission by typing in the Overall Feedback box, or uploading an attachment.
No changes have been made to page navigation. The user context bar now includes a menu to choose a learner or to choose a submission .
Choose an assignment to evaluate by expanding the menu to View Submissions .
Choose a student and Evaluate .
Start by opening the student submission. Files can be downloaded if preferred. If the assignment has a rubric, choose the toggle arrow to view it inline or expand as preferred. Use the text editor to give Overall Feedback .
Opening a submission will initiate a conversion of the file to the submission reader. A message appears to users when viewing a file that has been converted to .pdf from a different file type in Assignments. The message states "This file has been converted and may have inaccuracies. This will not apply to files that were already .pdf.
User Profile Card
Use your mouse to hover over a learner's profile in the new Assignment Evaluation Experience, the User Profile card now displays the value of the Org Defined Id field.
The evaluation pane divider is now draggable to suit a user’s preferences and screen size. Rubrics are now located at the top of the page, and assignment details are in the ellipsis menu. The overall grade remains as an icon that indicates if that grade is tied to the grade book. The divider is easily accessible via keyboard, meaning that evaluators using assistive technology or keyboard shortcuts will be able to adjust panel sizes without using a pointer.
Instead of always opening in another window or dialog, it now expands down the evaluation panel, allowing the evaluator to see both the rubric and the submission at the same time. Instructors with complex rubrics will be able to pop out the rubric into a larger view using the button in the top right of the component.
Preview Assignments in Evaluation Mode
Users who did not have edit permissions for assignments can preview assignments. By choosing the context menu and the Preview Activity option, users can see assignment information such as assignment instructions, start dates, or due dates.
The Assignments viewer includes the Download option. Instructors can download the original file without navigating to the submission list. Instructors can also download the annotated PDF file.
New Mobile View
The new mobile evaluation experience is more than just responsive, it is fully adapted to smaller screen sizes. While using smaller screens, such as a phone or a smaller tablet in portrait mode, the entire panel from the right side of the screen tucks into a neat and tidy drawer so that you can see and annotate files you’re grading without trying to manage unwieldy horizontal scroll bars.

Assignment and examination-based evaluation are two of the most common assessment methods for evaluating the progress of students in their learning. However, the review-based evaluation cannot be rejected; a blended methodology can be implemented. The evaluation of the coursework has to be given more attention because it provides students with a stronger learning experience.

Other things to consider when evaluating a piece of writing is whether the writing appealed to its target audience . Was there an emotional appeal? Did the author engage the audience, or was the piece lacking something? ..."If you are evaluating anything else, use your head. You need to try, use, or test whatever thing you are evaluating. That means you should not evaluate a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette unless you have the $45,000 (or more) to buy one, or the money to rent one. Identifying Criteria for an Evaluation
- " Make a list of prominent, widely recognized standards for judging your subject. If you do not know the standards usually used to evaluate your subject, you could do some research . Ways of Organizing an Evaluation Essay
- "One way to organize an evaluation essay is point-by-point: describe one element of the subject and then evaluate it; present the next element and evaluate it; and so on. Comparison/contrast could be an organizing structure as well, in which you evaluate something by comparing (or contrasting) it to a known item. Culinary and music reviews often use this strategy. Chronological organization can be used for evaluating an event (either current or historical). Sequential organization can be used when describing how something works and evaluating the effectiveness of the process, procedure, or mechanism. Spatial organization can be used for evaluating art or architecture in which you describe and evaluate one element of the artifact and then move spatially to the next major element to be described and evaluated." Every school has a unique method of setting work, tasks and assessing the level their students are at, but mostly these tests come in the forms of an assessment or an assignment. However, the difference between the two of these can be hard to spot - both receive task sheets, both can usually be worked on at home, they can contain some of the same content. So, how do we tell the difference and how can this help your child?
So, your child has come home brandishing an assignment task sheet. What does this mean exactly? An assignment is all in the name; it is the act of assigning. It is an allocation of a task or set of tasks that are marked and graded for the report card (but does not have to be). The purpose of an assignment is to give your child a more comprehensive understanding of the topic being studied and can include questions, long-form writing tasks or a more tactile and interactive activity. An assignment is usually completed at home and submitted to the school after a certain period.
An assessment may not come in a much different form to the assignment, but they are usually considered more important. This is because an assessment is the act of assessing the progress of your child. The assessment may be a take-home task, an exam/test, speech or something more hands-on. An assessment can be both in-class or at home. Usually, your child will get an assessment notification that is given approximately 2 weeks before the assessment is due. Particularly for Year 12s, assessments are incredibly important as they contribute to their overall internal mark.

What is an Assignment

Moreover, formative assessments aim to monitor student learning while summative assessments aim to evaluate student learning.
