7th Grade ELA Course Summary

In 7th Grade English Language Arts, students explore the question of what it means to be American through texts that address diverse aspects of the American experience: Uprising , Flesh and Blood So Cheap , A Raisin in the Sun , The House on Mango Street , American Born Chinese , The 57 Bus , and relevant texts: short stories, poems articles, and digital media . Through these texts, students will think deeply about the complex past, present, and future of America, and how to define their ever-changing identity as a nation. Across the 6 units, students deepen their writing skills through argumentative, informational, and narrative tasks, and continue to build their academic vocabularies, speaking and listening skills, and social-emotional competencies.

Throughout the course, students address all ELA Common Core Standards as they engage with increasingly complex texts , participate in class discussions, and write daily. Each unit helps build students’ knowledge and understanding of the world around them through thematically organized core and supplemental texts, embedded writing instruction and extended writing assignments in response to Essential Questions, and daily opportunities to engage in multiple tiers of academic discourse .

Some teachers hate 7th grade students. They claim that 7th graders are awkward, annoying, and hormonal. That may be true. Nonetheless, I've always loved my 7th grade classes more than any of my other groups. (Don't tell my 8th graders.) I love my 7th grade students because they are helpful, malleable, and are still eager to please their teachers (for the most part). You can reason with them. They can be hilarious. And they know that they're going to see you around next year, so they're not going to do anything too crazy. This page has all of my reading worksheets that were written at or around the 7th grade level. I used this awesome website to determine the readability scores of each of these worksheets, but you'll want to read and approve them yourself before giving them to your students. If you teach students who are reading at or around the 7th grade level, you've come to the right place. Surely you can find something on this page to enrich your students' literacy skills.

Those 7th graders are a handful, but if you keep giving them work like this, you'll keep them busy while they learn. Everybody wins. Students love completing work that they know how to do. If you teach them these concepts, and then give them practice that is written at their reading level, they'll be chugging through these assignments. I can't wait to hear about your success using the activities on this page. If you have any to share, post them in the comments below. I also accept corrections, suggestions, and critiques. Learn English » Grade 7 English Lessons

Grade 7 english lessons.

Grade 7 marks the transition into middle school in some educational systems, and high school in some others. In any case, it is a departure from elementary school in many ways. As far as English is concerned the major change is that the explicit teaching of grammar is almost non-existent. Whatever grammar may be taught, will be done inductively, or as revision exercises. The same may be said of vocabulary, though in this case, some idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs may continue to be taught. Reading passages will completely give way to books, fiction or non-fiction.

Reading comprehension at this stage will be considerably more complex and will test advanced inferential skills and vocabulary. There may also be summary writing introduced at this level.

Writing activities will encompass letter writing, explaining graphs, charts or diagrams, and article writing. This is in addition to the traditional essay writing, which itself will have more varieties such as narrative writing, argumentative writing, expository writing, and descriptive writing.

Vocabulary at this stage will be taught incidentally and as part of the vocabulary question in reading comprehension. However, when learners are second language learners with average or low proficiency in English, there may be a need to teach vocabulary explicitly.
