Business broadband explained
Fast and reliable business broadband is essential to the success of most modern businesses. And with more companies now being run remotely, a good business broadband connection has never been more vital.
Factors when you compare business broadband and landline
Web hosting and email addresses: Look out for antivirus and anti-spam filtering features.
Site creation: Sites such as EasySiteWizard help you quickly and easily set up a website for your business.
Business Voice (VoIP): Receive an inclusive VoIP business line for incoming and outgoing calls.
Extranet: This provides employees with one place to store and share information, which is backed up daily and password-protected.
PC Security: Protection suites safeguard your PC from hackers and viruses when you're online and protect you from infected flash drives when you're offline.
Should I go for a static or dynamic IP address?
Static/fixed IP addresses can give your business a real look of professionalism. This is great if the majority of your transaction and correspondence take place online.
However, the main problem with static/fixed IP addresses is that they can be vulnerable to hackers. So you'll need to make sure your internet security is as tight as can be if you choose one.
Business telephone and broadband for working from home
If you run a business from home, or are thinking of starting up, it's a good plan to get a business broadband connection rather than relying on your current home broadband service.
As well as giving you a number of added benefits, which we'll go through below, home broadband isn't really designed to be used to run a business. In fact, some business Wi-Fi providers include it in their T&Cs that home broadband must not be used for business or professional purposes. So be sure to check that you're using yours in the right way.
As long as you're operating a genuine business with your broadband, no matter how small, you should be able to find a cheap business broadband and phone package for your home on Uswitch.
Business Wi-Fi and phone packages for offices
If you have an office space, business broadband is a must. And it can be claimed back as a business expense on your company taxes.

Static IP address for business internet
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a numbered code that identifies every computer connected to a certain network. It then enables them to exchange information with one another over the internet.
With most home broadband connections, you're assigned a dynamic IP address. This means it changes every time you connect. However, with premium business broadband connections you are usually provided with a static IP address, which means that the identifying number always stays the same.
Static IPs enable you to access more advanced internet features that are helpful to a business, especially when running an office full of colleagues who are working together all day.
With a static IP address and you can:
Run a server
Build your own website
Create an email address that sends messages directly to an email account on your own domain
Which business internet providers should I choose?
A lot of UK business broadband providers now offer fairly-priced, high-speed packages tailored to the needs of companies at any size.
BT business broadband
BT Business offers standard broadband packages with superfast speeds and reliable customer service.
Its broadband packages range from those suitable for small-to-medium enterprises with light usage needs, all the way to larger firms with dozens (or even hundreds) of connected devices in use at any one time.
Customers can also choose to add mobile broadband with free Wi-Fi minutes on selected broadband packages. In addition to a minimum 10GB of usage allowance, BT also provides 10 email addresses with spam protection through Outlook Web Access.
Virgin Media Business broadband
Thanks to its ultrafast cable broadband network, Virgin Media Business is able to offer very high-speed and consistent broadband that's faster than most fibre connections — allowing speeds around 500Mbps all the way up to 1000Mbps (or 1Gbps).
Customer support is another strong selling point for Virgin Media's business broadband, with help on-hand from a dedicated, UK-based team 24/7 via a freephone number.
Other key features of Virgin Media Business Broadband include unlimited downloads and calls, as well as business-grade SLAs and wireless routers as standard on all packages.
Sky Business broadband
Joining the world of enterprise broadband in 2021, Sky Business offers enterprises a range of purpose-built broadband and voice tariffs, with speeds up to 76Mbps on its superfast fibre and up to 500Mbps on its full fibre broadband package.
A great option for smaller companies, the well-known provider has a dedicated customer service team with your business and its needs at heart.
Plus, those who sign up for Sky Business' Pro and Plus plans will be given a 4G backup hub that will switch on in the event of a broadband outage. The Sky Business digital phone service ensures businesses stay connected to their clients and colleagues.
TalkTalk Business broadband
TalkTalk Business broadband packages offer speeds of up to 76Mbps and prioritised business traffic. It's also known to have some of the most competitive prices on the market, so could be a great option if you're looking to save on overheads.
Companies also benefit from TalkTalk's wealth of industry experience, great customer service and the flexibility to customise a phone line and broadband deal to meet their needs and add extra services for a small additional charge.
Its customer support is excellent, with dedicated, UK-based specialists on call from 9am to 5pm. TalkTalk's superlative aftercare record was highlighted when it scooped a Cisco Customer Service Award for its standards of customer support.
bOnline is a small business broadband specialist, providing three powerful and affordable connections to help equip small businesses in the digital age.
Specifically, bOnline offers broadband on a 12-month contract with speeds ranging from 18Mb to 80Mb.
How can I maintain a strong internet connection all around the office?
A strong wireless network is the key to business broadband connectivity, so you'll need a Wi-Fi router with a long range that you can trust to handle multiple connections reliably. Consider adding additional access points for busier or larger locations.
How many routers do I need for my office?
For small offices with around ten or fewer workers, one router should suffice, but if you have many users or a large area to cover, supplementing these with multiple access points may be necessary. As a general rule, each access point can reach around 150ft (46m) indoors before starting to lose performance.
Why does my business need a static IP address?
A static IP address is vital if you want to set up a website, manage a server or email account or access your network remotely. A static IP address gives businesses a single, unique identifier for their internet connection, whereas most home broadband users have a dynamic IP address that changes every time they connect.
Should I bundle my business phone line and broadband?
Many business broadband deals come with a landline service from the same provider too. So it would make sense to bundle your phone line with your business broadband, both to save costs and to get a more seamless customer experience.

Best UK business phone and broadband deals – how to choose
Speed of light: fibre optic broadband is a necessity for fast-growing businesses
You need to understand your business and its internet needs before deciding on the best broadband and phone deal for you, says Nathan Hill-Haimes
Your business and phone broadband will allow you to get online, download and upload large files quickly and enable the day-to-day running of your business.
Business broadband is different to domestic broadband in the sense it offers faster speeds, more security and comes with dedicated customer support.
Here, we’ve highlighted just some (there are many more around) deals which specialise in small businesses – looking specifically at price, features and customer reviews.

Switching broadband provider is trickier than switching other services as you may have to physically switch to a different network. With that in mind, we’ve asked the experts what you should be factoring in when you choose business broadband and some of the best providers in the UK market.
Speed is all-important in your broadband decision making. Broadband packages for business are much faster than home broadband solutions and also provide greater choice; you can opt for either ADSL or fibre and can even choose a leased line. Leased broadband is a business option for a faster connection where you won’t share your bandwidth with anyone else. This dedicated line will ensure your connection runs at the speed you want.
It can be tempting to opt for the highest speeds available, with some providers offering up to 900mbps (that’s megabits per second), but it is worth being mindful that coverage may be limited. Most providers have an online tool which will tell you how good coverage will be in your postcode area before you commit to anything.
Then you need to choose between fibre and standard broadband. But which one should you go for? “Small businesses should be looking to choose ultrafast, fibre broadband to meet their everyday needs,” Alasdair Wright, chief marketing officer at Broadway Partners , tells Small Business . “Fibre is capable of transmitting data much faster than traditional copper connections. Fast broadband speeds are essential for businesses who need to download large files, access cloud platforms and jump from one video call to the next.
“Fibre connections are far more secure as their optical signals are harder to intercept than traditional electric transmissions, so businesses can be reassured their data is protected and they aren’t at risk of an attack or breach.”
Stability is also key, wherever your business is based: “Whilst small businesses have differing workspaces, stability and coverage should be a strong consideration for all,” Wright explains. “Home-based businesses will want assurance that their connection won’t drop out throughout the day, whereas those in larger office spaces will also need to ensure coverage is maintained across the entire space. It’s also important to think about how the installation of broadband may affect the business.”
Wright also advises us to think about installation. Quick and easy installation is best for minimal disruption and fibre broadband only takes a couple of hours to install, for example.
The level of broadband comes into play too. “Just as mobile broadband is working its way through to 5G, home/office WiFi is also progressing with greater speeds than ever before, also supporting more devices than ever before and with a signal power beaming directly to devices for maximum efficiency. Most new routers on fibre networks come with 6.0 as standard for ultimate reliability,” he says.
What broadband options are available for my business? – Here, we look at what types of internet connection you can choose for your company
How you connect
Take how you connect into consideration. Basic broadband connects through the asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) and uses the existing phone line infrastructure known as the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to connect to the internet. But BT, who owns and runs the PSTN, is switching off the network from December 31, 2025. “So, if you’re planning on making the switch in the next couple of years, opting for a broadband connection that connects using fibre optic cables, such as full fibre broadband, offers you a futureproofed service,” said Kristian Torode, director and co-founder of Crystaline .
Dynamic or static IP
You are likely to be familiar with dynamic IP addresses as these form the basis of home broadband services. A dynamic IP address changes frequently, meaning that you are not assigned a specific IP address. While this solution is fine for smaller, simple business operations, those which are more complex or have specific needs may find that a fixed IP address becomes a necessity. Such requirements include running CCTV systems, servers for websites, email management or the need to access a desktop remotely.
There are some disadvantages to static IP addresses though, most notably, the increased security risk from cyberattacks. Because the IP address remains constant, it is much easier to track the computer which is linked to it, making it a prime target for hackers. It is also more difficult to change a static IP address once it has been assigned. For most businesses, the pros of switching to a fixed IP address outweigh the cons, it will just require more emphasis on IT security and protection.
Customer support
Having a business continuity plan in place is essential for managing the unexpected, and this includes what to do in the event of an IT failure. Ensuring that you opt for a phone and broadband provider with a good track record of customer service is essential, so that you can rest assured that help will be on hand if you need it.
Most business packages will provide enhanced support teams, and some will provide 24/7 availability, through a combination of phone, email and live chat facilities.
If your business requires a certain level of response or you need to place a limit on downtime periods, it is worth considering implementing an SLA (Service Level Agreement) with your chosen provider. This will ensure that you are able to maintain a connection even if there is a fault with their broadband. A smart move would be to opt for a package which offers 4G as an automatic back-up, giving you continued coverage in the event of complete broadband failure.
Note when customer service hours operate. If you run a restaurant, for example, a provider which only offers customer service during standard business hours isn’t going to be able to help in a crisis.
Customer service is a vital component of your broadband package, but you should factor in how the whole shebang shapes up.
Torode added that it’s a good idea to look out for awards to back up providers’ claims of excellence. If they’ve got recent awards from the likes of Uswitch, Expert Reviews and Choose, that’s a positive sign.
“It’s also worth looking at customer review websites like Trustpilot, to see how each provider ranks for customer service,” he said. “It’s all very well having a broadband connection with a low price point, but if the provider doesn’t respond quickly in the event of a connectivity issue, it might be worth paying that little bit more for a better quality of service.”
Rural broadband: how to improve your speed – Rural broadband is agonisingly slow and small business owners are getting fed up. Here are some ways to perk up your internet speeds
What’s the best broadband for my business?
Now that you have a better understanding of what to look for, the next step is to consider how your business type may affect your decision.
“It’s important to calculate what your usage is going to look like,” Torode adds. “If you’re a small business with just a few devices, your data needs will be significantly less than a larger office with hundreds of connected devices, which might be best suited to an unlimited data package.”
Below are some example businesses to give you an idea of what you’ll need.
Home-based business
A small home-based business is likely to need a stable internet connection, particularly if conference calls are a frequent occurrence. If usage is fairly low and limited to browsing and emailing, then an ADSL line is likely to be sufficient. For more frequent conference calling or if there are multiple devices used in the household, a fibre optic solution will provide a faster, more stable connection.
Small retailer
For small retailers, salons and shops who are only using the internet to process card transactions and send emails, an ADSL line is likely to be the most cost-effective option. If music is likely to be streamed into the shop, it is worth opting for unlimited downloads to avoid any additional charges.
Cafe and restaurant
For cafes and restaurants, fibre optic broadband with unlimited downloads is a must have to ensure customers can enjoy hassle-free usage of the WiFi; this is now an essential selling-point as many more freelancers and remote employees opt to work from coffee shops and similar venues. This will ensure multiple people can use the internet at any time, providing both customers and staff with a reliable and fit for purpose solution.
Small office
Small offices would also be wise to opt for fibre optic broadband with unlimited downloads and for those with multiple employees, additional phone lines and a static IP address. Where growth is expected, it is also important to opt for solutions which can easily be scaled up and down as business dictates.
Larger office
Larger offices are likely to need a leased line or ethernet solution to help service the needs of multiple users, maintain a high-speed service and support remote servers, conference calls and other essential business functions.

Best business broadband deals 2024: Get GIGANTIC savings from the top providers

Looking for reliable, superfast internet for your work? Check out these business broadband deals from the top providers in the UK
The best business broadband deals offer professional-level reliability and customer service, without costing much more than your standard home broadband package. And there are some superb deals to be had from the UK’s biggest internet providers including Vodafone, BT and Sky.
Business broadband users aren’t all business owners. Millions of us are staffers and freelancers working from home, and our livelihoods depend on a decent connection but we can’t pay astronomical fees. Business broadband packages from even bargain-centric providers can cost north of £100/mth if you want 4G backup, 24/7 customer service and a static IP address included, so the prices below are incredibly good value.
How should you choose your ideal deal? Well, your needs as a business user aren’t quite the same as your needs as a home broadband user. Reliability should be your top priority rather than speed. An hour or two of unexpected daytime downtime could be costly in lost business or a missed deadline. Customer service is also vital: when you’re at work, you can’t afford to wait an hour in a call centre queue. The ability to reach someone 24/7, and have them understand your problem and deliver a solution pronto, is far more important than freebies.
Below, you’ll find our handy tool for finding the best business broadband deals in your neck of the woods, while the results of our annual Best Business Broadband Awards were clear: Vodafone scooped every single prize , while BT finished in a close second .

Compare business broadband providers
Hit-and-miss connections, snail-pace internet speeds and lousy customer service are all things we can do without. The trick to finding your best match is in deciding what matters most to you, and our list will help you spot your top contenders.
To compile our list of the best broadband providers in the UK, we checked the most extensive (and reliable) findings from Ofcom's annual surveys into the UK's biggest broadband companies ( Plusnet, Sky, Virgin Media, BT, EE and TalkTalk ).
But because we know bigger doesn't always mean better, we also did our own customer-focused investigations into the smaller broadband providers the Ofcom report didn't cover (including Vodafone, Zen Internet and the Post Office ).
To be a Startups chart-topper, the broadband provider needed to score highly in all of the three areas our start-ups tell us matter most to them:
- Deliver the goods – Offer a fast, reliable internet connection
- Care about your customers – Come running when things go wrong
- Don’t rip us off – The price needs to be fair – and not spike every few months
This also helped us work out which internet providers small business owners should definitely avoid.

Some of the top speeds – and most of their customers agree
As a leading network provider, you can expect good coverage with Vodafone – and 80% of their customers agree. To help, Vodafone only offers super-fast broadband speeds of 38Mbps or 76Mbps .
You can check your broadband availability and speed on their website.
Customer support
More control over your broadband
Compared with many broadband providers, Vodafone really go the extra mile. They’ve got a free app which gives their customers more control – you can easily change wifi passwords, choose when people can get online and even boost the speeds for your priority devices .
Vodafone Internet pricing
Three quarters think it’s great value for money
Vodafone is one for value for money – three quarters of their customers find it excellent. With average monthly totals of around £20 (and no line rental), small businesses can save hundreds in a year compared with most other providers.
Should I join Vodafone?
Absolutely, if you’re big on getting a great deal. Vodafone really are hard to beat on price, and their customers are generally happy with them.
You can find a cheap broadband package or see how their prices compare with Virgin, Sky, BT and TalkTalk here.
EE Broadband
Fastest broadband speeds, surprisingly affordable
✅ PROS – Lightning speed and reliable internet, flexible package options, no phone line needed ❌ CONS – Expensive compared to rivals
EE offers some of the fastest broadband speeds around at a price that might surprise you. It’s not quite as cheap as Vodafone, but considering their slightly stronger coverage and service, it’s a great value provider.
Jaw-dropping speeds
EE broadband gets top marks for reliability and only 14% had connection failures (which is actually one of the lowest ratings).
You can choose between standard internet speeds (up to 17Mbps) and EE’s fibre-optic cable (up to 38Mbps or 76Mbps). After that, you can even stretch to EE’s fibre max broadbands with jaw-dropping speeds of 145Mbps and 300Mbps .
You’ll also get to connect to BT’s many wifi hotspots when you’re on the go.
Some of highest Ofcom ratings
In Ofcom’s latest report on customer satisfaction for UK broadband providers, EE scores some of the highest ratings. They have some of the lowest numbers of complaints and the happiest customers for how complaints are handled, with six in ten satisfied.
EE customers also enjoy the shortest wait time when they call customer service – most get through to someone in just 48 seconds (with Plusnet, you’d be waiting a whole eight minutes).
Overall, 80% of EE broadband customers are satisfied – that might not sound like much, but it’s industry average.
EE Broadband pricing
Monthly prices from: £19
EE don’t have their own specific business broadband service – they share it with BT which you can check out here .
That said, we find their regular broadband deals a good option for most small businesses – they cost between £19 and £47 a month , depending on your need for speed and the contracts last 18 months.
Should I join EE?
EE offers a great mix of value for money and decent broadband speeds. The only downside is it’s less flexible than some others – you need an EE fixed phone number and (as with many providers) the contracts are all 18 months.
If you’d like to switch to EE, they’ll give you a £50 credit.
Virgin Media Broadband
Top speeds and service, even without a phone line
Virgin Media offers one of the fastest and most reliable broadbands in the UK – if it’s available in your area and you don’t mind paying a bit more for it.
Virgin Media broadband is 99.9% reliable
Virgin Media is the only broadband provider Ofcom found to report above-average customer satisfaction for speed . They are able to offer super-fast speeds using their very own broadband network – or as they put it, their magical high-tech cable.
With Virgin, your options are superfast or superfast. Right now you can get speeds of up to 50Mbps, 100Mbps, 200Mbps, 300Mbps and they have just released the UK's fastest speed of 350Mbps.
Sadly, their coverage isn’t quite there – Virgin Media broadband is only available to just over half the UK population.
Virgin Media customers recommend it
Virgin Media is known for its stellar customer service – and Ofcom backs it up. Virgin broadband customers are some of the most likely to recommend the provider to a friend .
Virgin Media pricing
Monthly prices from: £29
Virgin Media isn’t for you if your goal is to save on your broadband because they don’t offer standard (non-fibre) broadband packages at a reduced rate. That makes their starting prices more expensive, though there’s often an introductory offer.
But if like many small business owners, you’re after a provider that’s fast and reliable, Virgin’s prices are competitive for super-fast broadband .
Virgin is also one of the best (and only) options for broadband-only deals because they’re not reliant on BT’s phone line. But you can actually pay even less when you combine your broadband with their range of phone bundles – and even throw in a TV extra.
The contracts last 12 months (rather than 18 for most other broadband providers) and you can even go for a 30-day rolling contract if you’re a young start-up – it just tends to cost a bit more.
Should I join Virgin?
We definitely think Virgin Media broadband is a great option for small business owners in the UK – they offer good value for money if you’re looking for super-fast and reliable internet and they have some of the most flexible packages if you’re not quite ready to commit.
Plusnet Broadband
For cheap, flexible and easy broadband .
✅ PROS – Super cheap broadband packages (even fibre), flexible contracts, easy set-up, broadband-only options ❌ CONS – Longest wait times
With decent prices and great coverage, Plusnet are Ofcom’s best rated provider and are taking good care of many of the UK’s small business owners.
Speedy, reliable internet
Nearly all Plusnet’s customers find the internet fast and reliable . With their standard broadband package, you can enjoy speeds of up to 17Mbps, and with their fibre cable it’ll be closer to around 38Mbps and 76Mbps.
Ofcom’s best rated broadband provider
Ofcom’s survey says Plusnet’s broadband customers are the most satisfied , with 86% happy with the provider. They also have the lowest complaints rate at just 13%.
That’s a good thing because their customers also have the longest wait times (just shy of eight minutes on average), though most customers were happy when they eventually did get someone on the line. It’s a UK-based call centre, which may help to explain the delay.
Plusnet pricing
Monthly prices from: £14.49
You’ll be hard pressed to beat Plusnet’s cheap broadband deals . They start at under £15 a month for standard broadband only, but you can even get fibre-optic broadband from under £20 a month. Usually, you can get the Plusnet router for free too.
Just note that even if you don’t want a broadband plus phone package, you’ll still need a landline to get internet, so it can make sense to combine both anyway. Plusnet’s line rental tends to be around £18.99 a month.
Should I join Plusnet?
Plusnet are one of the only providers in the UK to offer broadband-only deals , so if that sounds like you, we cannot recommend them enough.
And even if it’s a combination package you’re after, we’re finding it hard to do better than Plusnet with their Ofcom-leading customer service , reliable internet and some of the cheapest broadband packages around.
BT Broadband
The UK’s best internet speeds and coverage
BT was ranked the Best Business Broadband at the last Cable.co.uk Awards and their killer speeds and coverage make them perfect for business broadband. You just need to combine an internet and phone package, so if you don’t want both you’ll find cheaper elsewhere.
The best availability in the UK
BT has the UK pretty well covered (better than any other network), so if you’ve had problems with another provider, BT are bound to be able to serve you. You also get to benefit from their five million nationwide wifi hotspots when you’re out of office.
BT’s speeds are also some of the best in the UK .
Slightly higher than average complaints, but the fastest internet repairs
BT customers have an okay customer satisfaction score on Ofcom – it’s 80% which is industry average. The wait times are also fine (between one and two minutes), but they do get quite a few complaints (the third highest number).
Yet what many customers don’t know is BT actually do prioritise their customers by paying for quicker repairs on the Openreach network. That means your internet will be fixed faster than with any other provider – within two days on average.
Monthly prices from: £22.90
You can choose between a broadband and office phone deal, or whack a TV sports package on top too for just £7 a month extra.
Should I join BT?
We’d consider it. BT’s business broadband is award-winning and they have the best broadband coverage in the UK . Though they just don’t offer a broadband-only deal, so you’ll need to pay for a BT phone line rental on the side (for £18.99 a month).
But if you were interested in a broadband and phone deal anyway and like the sound of being with the UK’s biggest network provider, you might like to take a look at what BT is offering.
Zen Internet
Top customer service, less value for money
Zen’s popularity shows you don’t need to be a big player to offer great customer service. It’s just a shame the same isn’t true on price.
Nearly everyone can get Zen's standard broadband coverage
Over 99% of the UK can enjoy Zen’s standard ADSL broadband service, with download speeds of up to 17Mbps. They can usually also fit your premises with fibre broadband that’ll get you download speeds closer to 38Mps or 76Mbps , depending on your contract.
Zen say their customers rave about the company
Zen are not quite big enough to be covered by Ofcom’s unbiased survey on the UK’s broadband providers, but they have some of the best customer reviews on TrustPilot .
Zen Internet pricing
Monthly prices from: £15.40
We were impressed with how flexible Zen’s broadband packages were. You can go for broadband only (if you already have a mobile with another network) and can sign up for just one-month contracts with their standard internet speeds (though fibre broadband has a minimum contract of 12 months).
That said, don’t expect any incentives to sweeten the deal – or discounts for paying upfront. What’s more, prices from £15.40 may seem cheap, but as most small business owners will want faster fibre broadband the rates are no longer competitive.
Should I join Zen?
Zen really do as their name suggests – they keep their customers happy and feeling taken care of. They also have good coverage and speeds and if you’ve been tearing your hair out with other providers and just want a stress-free broadband, we think Zen is a top choice.
But you can save a bundle on fibre-optic broadband elsewhere. If you care more about value for money than customer service, you might like to consider some of our other broadband providers like EE and Virgin Media which are also well rated for reliability and customer support.
Worst business broadband providers in the UK
Post office.
There’s a reason why you haven’t heard of their broadband
We think the Post Office should stick to delivering mail until they can get more competitive internet speeds, customer service and value for money.
Snail-paced broadband speeds
You can get either standard (up to 17Mbps) or fibre broadband (up to 38Mbps and up to 76Mbps with the Post Office.
But a whopping one in four Post Office broadband customers aren’t impressed with their internet service – they say it’s unreliable and slow .
Some of the unhappiest broadband customers in the UK
The Post Office tends to leave its customers waiting on the phone, but when you do get through the customer support team is friendly and helpful.
That said, we don’t think one in four customers rating them poorly is good enough, and 7% would even rank them very poor .
Post Office pricing
The Post Office only offers broadband and phone combo deals for standard or fibre internet. Some perks include all-you-can-eat data and free landline weekend calls.
Their line rental is not bad (£16.99 – just under some of their rivals), but considering how poor the internet quality and service is, we still don’t think it’s cheap enough.
Should I join the Post Office?
We really don’t see any good reason to sign up for the Post Office’s broadband and phone packages. They rate poorly for everything that matters to small businesses: speed, customer support and value for money.
Terrible customer service and slow speeds
As one of the UK’s biggest broadband providers, TalkTalk is able to offer some attractive prices. But the deal calculator tends to make you pay more than you thought and most TalkTalk customers still wouldn’t recommend them.
Doesn’t cut it for business use
TalkTalk customers aren’t impressed with their slow internet speeds and some have found the wifi can be down for up to two hours at a time.
With TalkTalk, you can either go for standard broadband (up to 17Mbps) or pay a little extra for fibre broadband (either around 38Mbps or closer to 76Mbps).
It’s a thumbs down from Ofcom
TalkTalk customers are some of the least satisfied on Ofcom, with just over two thirds happy with their provider. Many find the broadband patchy and 60% didn’t like how their complaints were handled .
TalkTalk pricing
Monthly prices from: £19.95
TalkTalk’s broadband packages are fairly reasonable and we like how they guarantee no mid-contract price rises. You’re able to add a TV package to get a better deal, but this may be less useful for small businesses.
TalkTalk’s router is free, though you’ll need to pay £9.95 postage. What’s not so good is how you find the right deal for you – you plug in your details and they recommend a monthly package (with a price often much higher than £19.95). We think it’s better to have transparent pricing and let the customer choose.
Should I join TalkTalk?
We really wouldn’t recommend TalkTalk to our readers. They have some of the worst internet speeds we tested and the UK’s least happy broadband customers.
On paper, their prices seem fine, but when you go to check-out, you usually find you’re on track to pay much more than you thought.
Still interested? You can have a go on their website here and see if you can do better. Otherwise, we’d suggest picking a better deal elsewhere.
Best UK broadband providers – key takeaways
We know broadband providers don't have the best reputation, but our reviews should help you find the one that'll tick your boxes, whether that's super speeds, coverage, customer support or value for money. Here are the best providers for each category:
- Value – Vodafone leads the way for deals and service
- Speed – EE offers top speed service
- Coverage – BT offers the UK's widest coverage
Though our top providers will offer a combination of all these must-haves for busy business owners. And just remember when you're comparing providers to look for the same internet speeds.
Take Virgin – they can seem pricey compared to the others, but that's because they only offer the fastest broadband (at great value). We only gave the Startups thumbs up to networks which offered value for money, so you should get a good deal with any of our top rated providers.
By now, you should have a better understanding of how broadband can help your business. You should also have some idea as to the type of provider you might want to work with.
If you want a little more help though, simply complete our form and we can use your details to match you up with the most appropriate broadband supplier. The process is easy and quick.

Best business broadband deals in the UK
If you run a small business from home you might use standard consumer broadband and get along with it fine. Broadband is simply a connection to the internet, after all, but there are some advantages of switching to a dedicated business broadband package.
On the face of it, these plans aren’t too different from normal home broadband. The price tends to be slightly more than the equivalent consumer broadband, but in return you’ll receive better customer support, quicker repairs and guaranteed minimum uptime.
This means business broadband is more reliable, so you’re much less likely to end up in a situation where you can’t run your company because your internet is down.
If broadband is absolutely critical to your business, it’s worth looking at plans that include 4G backup, or offer it as a bolt-on option. If your main broadband connection fails, the service will automatically switch to 4G – the same mobile data connection your phone uses – which ensures your devices are always connected.
Even when on 4G, the connection is still routed via Wi-Fi, so all your devices will continue to have a connection even if they themselves don’t have 4G (or 5G).

Broadband Deals Comparison Table
Cable and fibre-to-the-premises.
Some types of broadband are only available to a small number of UK addresses:
FTTP broadband through providers such as Hyperoptic & Gigaclear (nationwide) or Community Fibre (London) is currently available to less than 10% of households.
Cable broadband through Virgin Media is available to around 60% of households.
We strongly advise searching your postcode to see what’s available in your area.
- TalkTalk : 4 Deals
- Hyperoptic : 18 Deals
16 of 22 deals matched.
Filter your deals:
Connection:, connection types.
Standard copper-wired broadband (ADSL) is the most basic, with low top speeds of 8-17Mbps and often poor connection stability. Speeds are often much lower at busy times of day, or if you live more than 1 mile from the exchange. Only recommended in cases where no other option is available.
Fibre broadband (FTTC / Cable) uses a mix of fibre and copper wiring to deliver a faster, more reliable connection. Most advertise top speeds of 76Mbps, though some providers can now offer up to 300Mbps in limited areas and Virgin’s cable network can go to around 500Mbps.
Fibre-to-home broadband (FTTP) offers the highest speeds by running full-fibre cables right into your property. FTTP availability is mostly limited to cities for now, but full-fibre coverage is expanding fast.
Enter your postcode to check availability .
'Up to' speeds
Broadband speeds are sometimes still advertised using an ‘up to’ figure, representing the upper end of the speeds available to most customers.
You may not be able to receive the displayed speed on your connection. Actual speeds will vary by location, particularly for mobile broadband.
Contract terms
Broadband deals are now offered with a range of different contract lengths.
If you find a particularly cheap deal, it can be a good plan to lock it in for 18 months.
If instead you prefer flexibility, 1-month / no-contract broadband deals are fantastic choice, though they do tend to cost more up front.
Inclusive calls:
Calls bundles.
If you’re the type to spend hours chatting on the landline, you can make huge savings by bundling your calls in with your broadband.
Most providers offer a range of calls packages, so whether you’re after the odd evening gossip, or a marathon mid-day gabfest, you should be able to find something to suit.
Always check the provider’s terms – some numbers may not be included in your free call-time.
No Landline
The vast majority of UK broadband comes through phone lines – so most deals require that you have a landline to your property, even if you don’t use it for the telephone.
However, some providers run their own cables to your premises, doing away with the need for a landline. Virgin’s cable network is the most widespread of these, available to around 60% of homes.
Some providers also allow you to get broadband but pay line-rental separately through another provider – these deals are labelled ‘separate line-rental required’.
Matched Deals
Current provider.
Some deals are only available to new or existing customers.
If you let us know your current provider, we’ll make sure that we only show you deals you can actually get.
Sorting by First Year Cost from Lowest to Highest
This is the total combined cost of the deal over the first year of the contract – including any extras like postage and installation fees, or price rises after an introductory discount.
We think this is the most accurate indicator of the overall cost of each offer.
If two or more deals have the same first-year cost, the initial cost-per-month will also be considered.
Please note we do not consider any cashback or free gift value in this calculation.
You can reverse the order by clicking the arrows next to the dropdown list.
Sorting by Monthly Cost from Lowest to Highest
This is the initial cost-per-month of the deal, but does not take into account any up-front fees or mid-contract price increases.
If two or more deals have the same cost-per-month, the first-year total cost will be considered.
Sorting by Average Broadband Speed from Lowest to Highest
This is the speed each provider has reported that at least 50% of their customers can expect at peak times.
If two or more deals have the same speed, the first-year total cost will be considered.
Sorting by Data Limit from Lowest to Highest
This is the amount of download data included each month. If your data runs out mid-month you will have to pay more to keep using your mobile broadband.
Sorting by Popularity from Lowest to Highest
This option is based on how many people have a) clicked on, and b) purchased each deal using BroadbandDeals.co.uk within the past 7 days.
If two or more deals have the same popularity, the first-year total cost will be considered.
Sorting by Recommended from Lowest to Highest
We recommend deals automatically using an algorithm.
We sort deals based on how much they cost compared to the average cost of similar packages, as well as the value of incentives such as vouchers or free gifts.
We also factor in how popular the deal is with our users and how likely it is to result in a successful user experience.
Commercial considerations are not a factor.
Sponsored Deal
This deal listing has been sponsored by the provider.
That means BroadbandDeals.co.uk receives an increased commission on sales of this deal.
This does not increase the cost to you.

Having a secure and reliable internet connection is essential for most businesses and fibre connections offer more stability and faster speeds than traditional ASDL connections. There are many types of fibre connections available which include fibre to the cabinet ( FTTC ), fibre to the premises ( FTTP ), leased lines , Ethernet connections including Ethernet First Mile (EFM) and Ethernet over FTTC (EoFTTC). In the post-pandemic workplace, you’ll struggle to find a company that doesn’t rely on business broadband. Whether your business’ team needs Internet access to advertise on social media or to attend important client meetings, business broadband is indispensable. Considering the rising popularity of remote working, you might think that a standard home broadband package will suffice for your business. However, regardless of how your team operates, you’ll benefit from the higher speeds and better reliability of business broadband. Thankfully, most of the UK’s major Wi-Fi providers – including BT, Virgin Media, and Plusnet– offer broadband packages designed specifically for businesses. Last update: November 2022
In this article, we at Broadband Plans explain everything you need to know about business broadband. We’ll discuss the different types of connections and the benefits of purchasing a broadband package for your workplace. We’ll also share the UK’s best business broadband deals, so you can stay connected with colleagues and customers affordably.
What is business broadband?
Business broadband refers to a fixed-line Wi-Fi connection that’s designed for the needs of businesses. Essentially, it’s what connects nearby devices, such as work laptops, printers, or phones, to the Internet.
Do I need business broadband?
If you’re running a business that heavily relies on Internet access, you may need business broadband. This is because slow connections or dropouts can cause major disruption to your company. A business broadband connection will offer the speeds, reliability, and customer service to keep your company connected.
Small teams may be able to cope with residential broadband. However, if your company has more than ten employees, your team will likely benefit from business broadband’s improved service.
What are the benefits of having business broadband?
When you choose a business broadband deal, you’ll enjoy advantages that a standard home broadband plan won’t offer.
What types of business broadband are available?
Like residential broadband, you can choose between three types of broadband connection:
<td >Full fibre or ultrafast 100-500MbpsThis is a connection using only fibre-optic cables, resulting in very fast speeds and improved reliability.

Which providers offer business broadband deals?
Like home broadband providers , there are a range of business broadband providers in the UK. This includes dedicated providers targeted at businesses specifically, as well as the UK’s largest Wi-Fi brands, such as BT and TalkTalk.
What are the UK’s most popular business broadband providers?
Here are the deals and details of the most popular business broadband suppliers.
BT Business broadband
Whatever the size of your company, BT can provide a suitable business broadband option. BT offers broadband deals with or without phone lines, and you can choose from a range of Internet speeds and bonuses. Each BT Business broadband deal comes with 24/7 access to customer support, an included router, and up to 10 BT email addresses. You can also choose a static IP address if you wish.
Here are BT Business’ best deals:
Last update: Prices are valid as of November 2022
TalkTalk business broadband
You can also purchase a business broadband deal from TalkTalk. It’s able to provide Wi-Fi and phone line solutions to companies at affordable rates. Like its competitors, your business can access UK-based customer service 365 days a year – but it’s not 24-hour support. However, all TalkTalk deals include the provider’s WorkSafe solution, which secures your workplace’s network and any devices using it. You can also purchase a static IP address for an extra £1 each per month.
These are TalkTalk’s best business broadband plans:
Virgin Media business broadband
Virgin Media uses its own network to offer high-speed Internet connections across the UK. You can choose from a variety of deals, including options with or without a landline for your broadband connecti on. Virgin Media Business boasts some of the fastest speeds of any business broadband provider.
Its customer support is available 24/7 for 365 days a year. This provider includes cybersecurity software, business email addresses, and a fixed IP address with its packages.

Should I bundle my business phone line and broadband?
Most business broadband deals include phone lines, but you can opt for a phone-free deal. Business phone lines can serve as a dependable means of communication with customers, especially if you advertise your contact number online.
However, if your team already has work mobiles or works across different locations, mobile phones may be a smarter option.
Which providers offer business phone line and broadband deals?
Similarly to residential broadband, you’ll find that most providers combine business broadband and phone packages. You can access a business phone line from this provider:

Business TV deals
Note that unlike home broadband deals, it isn’t possible to bundle business broadband and phone services with TV services. However, Sky currently offers business broadband and TV plans for pubs, bars, clubs, and retail settings, enabling businesses to display live sport for customers.
In addition to sports programming, Sky for Business also offers live TV plans for hotel rooms and even offshore sites, such as oil rigs. It provides TV for office settings too, allowing staff to enjoy entertainment, news, and sports in the workplace.

🏠 What is the difference between home and business broadband?
Although they function in the same way, business broadband deals offer a higher quality of service and extra bonuses. This may include:
- better reliability
- improved security
- faster Internet speeds
- business email addresses
- fixed IP addresses
- enhanced and more responsive customer support.
💫 What is priority network access?
One of the perks of having business broadband is that your company’s web traffic takes priority over that of residential customers. This means your business is less likely to experience slow Internet speeds – even during peak usage hours.
🏫 How many routers do I need for my office?
If you’ve got around 10-12 computers or work mobiles to connect, one business broadband router should suffice. However, if you’ve got more devices than that, or a larger office with multiple floors, you may need multiple routers.
❗ Why are static IP addresses important?
IP addresses can change often with a home broadband connection. However, business broadband deals often include static IP addresses. These are useful as you can use them to access devices remotely or host a website server from anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
What is business broadband.
Business broadband is a high speed internet connection for your office or workspace. If you work from home, you can also use it as your home broadband.
Is business broadband faster?
Vodafone Business Broadband is exactly the same speed and reliability of our home broadband, giving you a reliable, fast, secure connection.
What is a static IP and do I need it?
IP addresses are usually dynamic meaning a new one is assigned to a device each time it connects to the network. Vodafone Business Broadband uses static IP addresses which don’t change.
This gives you a range of benefits such as making it easier to access your computer remotely, host a website, run CCTV, and improves the reliability of calls over the internet.
Is business broadband more secure?
Our business broadband has the same security features as our home broadband, meaning when it comes to protecting your privacy and information, you can be sure you’re in good hands.
And with our Broadband app you have full control over your network, so you can see who’s connected and manage who has access.
Do I need business broadband if I work from home?
Our business broadband helps you focus on your work with a reliable, secure, and fast connection for your business.
Broadband bought on a business plan can save you money because you don’t need to pay VAT, and can be used as both a business and home broadband.

Business broadband FAQs
What is business broadband.
Business broadband is broadband specifically for a registered business set up in an office or workspace at home.
What's the difference between business broadband and home broadband?
Our business broadband offers business-grade problem resolution and a range of additional benefits such as Constant Connect , designed to keep you connected if there's ever a broadband outage. These kind of features are only available to our business customers.
Business broadband can be used at home if your business is registered to that address.
Can I get business broadband if I'm not a business but work from home?
Even if home is your head office, we've got a business broadband deal to suit you, thanks to our HomeWorks solution. From 24/7 IT support for all your gadgets to top tier security provided by F-Secure SAFE, we've got working from home covered. You can find out more about adding homeworks to your broadband package here
How do I choose which business broadband deal to get?
This depends on the needs of your business, including the number of devices using your broadband, how much data you're uploading and downloading, whether you need a static IP address and how quickly you'd like IT support. For further advice use our live chat or call 0800 052 1135 and one of our agents will help you choose.
What happens if my broadband goes down?
Our business broadband is 99.9% reliable, but Constant Connect means that if it ever does goes down you will be instantly switched to the 4G network for uninterrupted coverage. You can also call our technical support centre on 0800 052 0800 (8am - 6pm, Monday - Friday) and our agents will support you as quickly as possible.
Do I need to get a phone line with business broadband?
We offer broadband packages with or without a phone line. You can order a digital phone line at the same time as your business broadband, simply by selecting from the packages above.
Is there any downtime when I switch to Virgin Media?
We always try to minimise any interruption to your service as we switch you over. But for added peace of mind, as we own our own network, if you’re in a Virgin Media cabled area you can choose to keep your existing service until we connect you.
Please note you’ll need to continue paying your current provider if you do this, plus it’s your responsibility to cancel your existing services. Virgin Media can’t be held responsible if your existing provider fails to do this.
If I switch my phone line, can I keep my current phone number?
Yes, normally you can keep your BT phone number and stop paying BT line rental if you’re staying in the same local area. Just let us know when you buy online or speak to our sales team.
How can I perform a business broadband speed test?
To test the speed of your current connection, please visit our dedicated broadband speed test page . From here you'll be able to perform a speed test and see how much faster you could go with Voom Fibre business broadband.
Can my business get ultrafast broadband?
Use our postcode checker to check out what speed broadband is available to your business. We are the UK's fastest widely available business broadband provider so can offer you packages with download speeds from 100Mbps all the way up to 1000Mbps.
What’s the difference between static and dynamic IP addresses?
There are two types of IP addresses – static and dynamic.
Static IP addresses are the same every time you connect to the internet. They’re used by all major websites, email services, FTP services and so on. By contrast, dynamic IP addresses may change each time you connect to the internet and every time you send a message over the internet. If you think your business might need one or more static IP addresses, you can find out more in our help and advice section
Why are upload and download speeds important for business broadband?
Put simply, upload speed is the speed at which data is transferred from your PC to your network and download speed is how fast data gets from your network back to you. If you're streaming video calls, uploading large files or using cloud applications, business broadband with good upload speeds is essential. Voom 400 (our starting package) has an upload speed of 40mbps and Voom Gig1 fibre business broadband has upload speeds of 100mbps - perfect if your business is highly reliant on uploading lots of data to the internet.

Future-Proof Your Business with Lightning-Fast Business Broadband
For many businesses, having a reliable internet connection is essential to function properly.
If the internet goes down, this can have an overwhelmingly negative impact on productivity and profitability.
Many packages will include 24-hour technical support and priority support not found in a consumer broadband package. So if your internet cuts out, it won’t be too long before you’re back up and running again.
No matter your size or industry, it is integral that your business has a strong internet connection so that you can easily be contacted by new and existing customers alike.
Without a reliable internet connection, communication between your staff could be hampered which could have a devastating impact on their productivity and ultimately your profits.
You can’t just get a standard internet connection that you have at home though, and you wouldn’t want one anyway, not when you learn about what specialist business broadband packages can offer you.
What Are the Benefits of Business Broadband?
Business broadband packages are tailor-made for the needs of business clients, offering a variety of additional perks not typically found in standard home broadband plans. Some of these exclusive features include the following:
Specialist Customer Support
In the business world, a solid internet connection is a must for smooth operations.
When your internet connection fails, it can seriously hamper your productivity and profits.
A lot of business packages come with 24/7 technical support and priority assistance, something you won’t get with regular home broadband. So, if your internet suddenly drops out, you’ll be back in action in no time.
Guaranteed Service
When you’re evaluating business broadband options, check for the presence of a Service Legal Agreement (SLA).
An SLA ensures that any technical glitches will be promptly addressed within an agreed timeframe.
If your provider fails to meet this commitment, you may be entitled to compensation.
Static IP Address
Everyone possesses an IP address, irrespective of their choice of home or business broadband service.
The key contrast lies in the nature of the IP address. A home IP address is dynamic, altering each time you connect. Meanwhile, business broadband IP addresses are static, retaining their consistency.
This seemingly subtle dissimilarity can prove advantageous, enabling activities like CCTV operation and website hosting, while reducing interruptions.
Better Security
Prioritising the safety of both your customers and employees is a paramount concern.
In our digital era, various threats loom, such as malware, spyware, Trojan Horses, and hackers, which can compromise your business.
Business broadband solutions can fortify your defenses against all these perils, offering you reassurance regarding your business’s cybersecurity.
Faster Upload Speeds
Business broadband plans typically feature elevated upload speeds, primarily because they are tailored to accommodate multiple users concurrently sharing a single connection.
Phone Capabilities
Effective communication is fundamental, and many businesses still depend on phone calls to maintain smooth operations.
With business broadband, you can not only make phone calls online but also sustain extensive internet-based phone systems.
More Powerful Hardware
Every business aims for growth, and as your enterprise expands, your demand for robust hardware to fuel your progress will increase.
Business broadband plans can provide the hardware you require to align with your ambitious business goals.
How Is Broadband Speed Measured?
Broadband speed is gauged in megabits per second, often denoted as Mb, Mbits p/s, or Mbps.
A higher number of megabits per second in your connection equates to faster performance, enabling quicker tasks like streaming, downloads, and general browsing compared to a lower Mb connection.
What Is Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)?
FTTP represents the core of contemporary business broadband offerings.
FTTP eliminates outdated copper connections, utilizing solely high-speed fiber optic cables that stretch directly from the telephone exchange to your business location.
This ultrafast, dependable, and secure option boasts speeds ranging from 40mbps to 330mbps, custom-tailored for the needs of larger enterprises.
How Fast Does My Business Internet Need to Be?
Every business is distinct, with specific requirements that demand a tailored Business broadband solution.
For independent contractors or solo operators, a package with lower speeds that precisely matches your needs can be a cost-effective choice. This ensures you can efficiently handle essential business tasks, such as communicating with clients and customers via email, without overextending your budget.
On the other hand, if you manage a larger business, an FTTP connection becomes imperative. This ultrafast and secure internet is essential to enable your employees to perform their duties effectively.
How Can I Get Business Broadband?
The process is incredibly straightforward. Just click the ‘Begin Your Free Quote’ button, and you can commence comparing quotes.
This service is entirely cost-free, and there’s no commitment to make a purchase. So, click that button, follow the prompts, and start your comparison.

One million premises upgraded to gigabit broadband by government
The government is rolling out gigabit networks faster than any other country in the EU.
1 million homes and businesses upgraded to lightning-fast broadband by UK government
- Government has delivered faster, more reliable connectivity to an average of one building every six minutes since project began, as one million properties connected
- majority are in hard-to-reach locations, where previously many people would have struggled to stream TV shows or run small businesses
- comes as two more Project Gigabit contracts signed to connect around 32,400 premises in Gloucestershire and Yorkshire
- further support announced through £70 million Future Telecoms Programme and Very Hard to Reach Alpha Trials to boost satellite connectivity
More than one million homes, businesses and public buildings can now access the best internet speeds on the market as a result of the UK government’s rollout of faster, more reliable broadband – showing our plan to connect hard-to-reach communities is working.
For over a decade the UK government has been investing in the construction of ‘gigabit-capable’ networks in areas that are too difficult or expensive for broadband suppliers to reach as part of their commercial plans.
This long-term decision has helped to grow the rural economy, create jobs, and ensure those in rural and remote communities across the country can reap the rewards of lightning-fast connectivity, from hamlets surrounding Land’s End in Cornwall to a Royal Air Force radar station in the northern isles of Shetland.
New data shows 1,006,800 homes and businesses have been connected, or are able to access, a better broadband connection thanks to UK government-funded programmes since the first upgrade was delivered in August 2012 – the equivalent of rolling out to one home, business or public building every six minutes.
The majority of these premises are in hard-to-reach rural locations, where residents and businesses previously would have struggled to perform basic online tasks that others take for granted such as shopping or banking online, participating in a work video call, streaming a high-definition film or online learning.
Thanks to upgrades delivered under government-backed broadband rollout programmes, these premises can now access more reliable services than traditional copper-based networks. Gigabit speeds mean households can download a high-definition film in under one minute, shop online across several different devices at once and utilise high definition video calls, such as with a GP , allowing for better healthcare.
The million premises includes 5,300 public buildings - including schools, libraries, hospitals, police stations, council offices and more. The upgrades have helped boost productivity in public services and create better experiences for those who use them, while encouraging broadband companies to extend the network to surrounding homes and businesses - improving economic security and opportunity for everyone.
Businesses – which have already increased turnover by £2.6 billion in areas targeted by our Superfast programme - will particularly benefit from gigabit capable technologies, with greater speed and reliability allowing them to bring in more orders and complete more work remotely anywhere in the UK, in turn boosting growth across our country.
The UK government’s rollout is continuing to gather pace, with more than £77 million worth of Project Gigabit contracts signed today to connect around 32,400 rural premises across Gloucestershire, West and parts of North Yorkshire. Project Gigabit is a record £5 billion programme to ensure hard-to-reach areas are not left behind in the national upgrade to gigabit broadband.
This forms part of the UK building gigabit networks faster than any country in the EU, thanks in part to government measures to stimulate competition and bust barriers to rollout.
Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said:
Achieving a million gigabit-ready premises shows our plan to turbocharge British broadband is working. Thanks to our investment, rural communities held back by achingly slow internet can now tap into the best speeds on the market. The UK is rolling out gigabit networks faster than any country in the EU, with 8 in 10 premises now able to access upgrades. It is a track record that shows we are rapidly building the infrastructure Britain needs to improve lives and grow the economy.
To mark the milestone, Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan is visiting the rural town of Wooler in Northumberland on Thursday (22 February) to see the impact of the government’s rollout. She will meet one entrepreneur who launched a successful hotel business as a result of the upgrades, as well as firms and employees who say the broadband boost has helped improve their productivity.
Most of the 1 million premises are spread across hard-to-reach areas of the UK, including 68,800 in Scotland, 108,800 in Wales and 118,900 in Northern Ireland. Hundreds of thousands more will be connected in the coming months and years via Project Gigabit. Over £1.1 billion has already been signed in Project Gigabit contracts to connect more than 700,000 premises in England, from Northumberland, Durham and Cumbria to Cornwall, Norfolk and Suffolk.
Clive Selley, Openreach CEO said:
We’re proud at Openreach to be leading the UK’s digital transformation – investing £15 billion to build a new ultrafast, ultra-reliable full fibre broadband network throughout the country. In recent years, the UK’s telecoms sector has been supported by policies and regulation - including the super deduction - which encouraged this massive investment, and we’re on track to reach more than 25 million homes and businesses by the end of 2026, including millions in rural communities. Our network, in-turn, will support future growth and prosperity for everyone so we hope this supportive environment will continue and we’re working with partners across the industry to get the job done.
Now, around 80 per cent of the UK is covered by gigabit broadband, up from just 6 per cent in 2019, and the UK is on track to achieve 85 per cent by 2025. Having the fastest connections also means the UK is fit-for-the-future, with broadband infrastructure designed to deliver for people’s needs for decades to come.
Carolyn Dawson, CEO , Founders Forum Group, said:
For founders, entrepreneurs and businesses, a reliable, high-speed internet connection can provide the rocket fuel that their ambitions need, supporting their day-to-day work and helping them to grow, so we have been delighted to see the success of Project Gigabit to date. When Founders Forum Group became the custodian of the much-loved Tech Nation brand last year, we inherited its remit to champion startups from all corners of the UK, and investments like this support the growth of innovative and exciting businesses in locations across country. For those building a business in Inverness or Eastbourne, the rapid rollout of these high-speed internet connections should be welcomed.
Alex Veitch, Director of Policy and Insights at the British Chambers of Commerce said:
It’s hugely welcome that more businesses across the UK now have access to gigabit broadband. Fast and reliable connectivity is fundamental to helping firms grow and thrive in a modern economy.” It’s vital that the rollout continues apace so many more firms in rural parts of the country can also reap the benefits of this important project. In the coming months, we will also be setting out our ambitions for bringing down existing barriers to broadband coverage, recognising the important role it plays for businesses.
Julian David, CEO of techUK, said:
This announcement underscores the crucial role that high-quality communications infrastructure plays in driving the UK’s economy, connecting society, and fostering prosperity. techUK is particularly pleased to see the continued investment in the innovative telecoms technology of tomorrow. These advancements are pivotal in shaping the future landscape of innovation, powering a plethora of emerging technologies, ranging from quantum computing to AI , automation, and edge computing.
Today’s announcement comes as the government outlines details of UKRI ’s £70 million Future Telecoms Programme, funded through the UKRI Technology Missions Fund and supporting one of five critical technologies, which will see 16 UK projects share £22 million to support development and commercialisation of cutting-edge tech solutions and lay the groundwork for the networks of the future.
Meanwhile £40 million will provide further support for three existing Future Telecoms Research Hubs - led by Imperial College London, Oxford, and Cambridge Universities - alongside the creation of a dedicated national infrastructure for future telecoms testing and development linked to the UK National Dark Fibre Facility - to support research in 6G, developing new architectures and networks for end-to-end connectivity, embedding AI and computing and developing wireless access systems such as cell-free networks and optical wireless integration.
Dr Kedar Pandya, UKRI Technology Missions Fund Senior Responsible Owner, said:
The investment announced today will play an important role in advancing the telecoms technologies of tomorrow, supporting both early-stage research and market-ready solutions. It underlines the role the Technology Missions Fund and UKRI support plays in unlocking the potential of new technologies that will have a profound impact on society and the economy.
The UK is also delivering high-speed, reliable connectivity to some of our very hardest to reach locations using satellite connectivity through the ‘Very Hard to Reach Alpha Trials’. These trials are testing the extent to which low Earth orbit ( LEO ) satellites can be used to deliver high-speed low latency broadband connections to areas which are typically beyond the building capability of internet service providers. This includes transforming connectivity for some of the country’s most important wildlife havens and sites of historical importance within protected landscapes.
Further Information
Premises are classified as passed by gigabit-capable broadband if it is possible to access a gigabit-capable service for the standard price and be connected in the standard timescale.
All premise count figures are rounded to the nearest 100, meaning they may not sum due to rounding.
The total number of premises connected have been funded via a range of active and legacy programmes, including the Superfast Programme, Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, Gigabit Infrastructure Subsidy (Project Gigabit contracts) and Gigahubs.
There are already alpha trials live in a number of areas including the Shetland Islands, Eryri National Park, and North Yorkshire, and today, the government unveils five additional trial sites in Scotland, Northumberland, and Norfolk. These will transform connectivity for some of the country’s most important wildlife havens and areas of historical importance, as the government leans on the UK’s tech ingenuity to drive forward new ways to meet connectivity challenges.

One solid provider is BT, a well-known brand that has been around for years and is a more than valid choice for those in the market for a decent-priced broadband plan.
You can find a range of plans to suit most people's needs, and there are some great incentives, too, including the Full Fibre 2 plan, which comes with 74 Mbps, which is a rather decent option for £35.99 per month.
It also comes with a nice little extra with the £100 virtual reward card for joining. Its superfast broadband is slightly overpriced for what it is (you could find better deals from the likes of Virgin), so we think BT are more suited to the average user who just needs a reliable connection that doesn't cost the earth.

Now broadband is one of the newer suppliers on the market, and they have been making a steady name for themselves.
They are part of the Sky network, and although they don't offer any super impressive speeds, they are hard to beat on price. The 'Brilliant broadband' package is one of the best prices available right now at only £20 per month for 11 Mbps, which is perfect for the average user and those who aren't heavily reliant on broadband.
Plusnet is a well-known provider of well-priced broadband that doesn't compromise on speed.
In fact, its Full Fibre 500 plan is one of the most reasonably priced going right now and is more than enough for most users.
The provider has often topped Best Buy lists and is recommended by 78% of customers, so you can be sure you are getting a reliable service that will get you online for less.
While these plans and prices are dependent on your location, you can check what is available in your area below.
Virgin Media
- Virgin Media, M250, 264 Mbps, £27 per month - buy here
One of the best-known providers on the market when it comes to speed is undoubtedly Virgin. They have made a name for themselves in this department, and it comes at a premium.
But there are plenty of plans that come with impressive speeds for those on a budget, like the M250 plan for £27 per month.
If you are heavily reliant on your broadband and need the top speeds on the market, then Virgin is the provider to go with.
You can get up to 1130 Mbps for £42 per month, which will give you lightning-fast upload speeds.
- BT, Full Fibre 100, 150 Mbps, £37.99 per month - buy here
If you want something with a bit more oomph, then we recommend you opt for the BT Full Fibre 100 plan.
It is £10 more per month than the Full Fibre 1 plan but comes with three times the speed at 150 Mbps, and you'll receive a £50 reward card.
Community Fibre
- Community Fibre Broadband - buy here
Community fibre has some of the fastest wired download speeds available, making it an unmatched option.
They start at just £20 per month and provide speeds of up to 1GB. Even better, there won't be any bother because they'll transfer you over without affecting your internet access in as little as two days.
In addition, Community Fibre guarantees that there won't be any slowdowns during peak hours, so you'll always be getting what you paid for.
- Co-op broadband – buy here
Co-op’s cheapest deal currently is its Superfast broadband, and for that, you’ll pay from £28 per month. Alternatively, Ultrafast Full Fibre broadband costs from £43 for download speeds of 100 – 900Mbps, which is ideal if your family spends a lot of time streaming movies, downloading music or gaming.
Set-up is free if you take out a two-year contract, or if that’s too long a time commitment, you can go for a one-year contract, but you’ll have to pay £30 for set-up on Superfast and £50 on Ultrafast.
Co-op members receive points when they become broadband customers and also receive points for every year they stay with the company.
- Three broadband – buy here
Three is currently offering 6 months half-price on both its 4G home broadband and its 5G home broadband, with no set-up costs for either. After 6 months, your broadband will cost you £22 per month.
There’s no need for a landline, and you won’t have an engineer come to your home for set-up as Three describes its packages as ‘plug and play’.
You can connect up to 64 devices on 4G, whereas on 5G, you can connect up to 30 devices and expect near-instant downloads with an average of 150Mbps download speed.
- Sky Broadband - buy here
Sky often has some great TV packages, and the Broadband deals follow the same pattern.
Currently, you can get the Gigafast broadband for £42 a month, providing you with an average speed of 900mb/s, or if you're looking for a cheaper offer, you can nab the Superfast package for just £29 a month, which provides you with an average speed of 145mb/s.
However, if you're looking for the Superfast package, you'll have to act with haste as Sky states the offer ends today.
You can check out all of the broadband deals here .
What is broadband?
Generally speaking, the term broadband refers to a high-speed internet connection that can be used to browse the web, stream films and play online games, as well as work from home, something that is a lot more commonplace than it was pre-COVID.
Broadband replaced the old dial-up connections (also known as narrowband) in the early 2000s, ushering in the era of always-on, unlimited internet.
The first broadband connection in the UK was installed by NTL (today Virgin Media) in Basildon, Essex, in 2000. By 2007, approximately half of all UK internet users possessed a broadband connection.
What types of broadband are there?
According to Ofcom , there are three types of fixed-line broadband in the UK: ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), cable, and fibre. ADSL speeds oscillate between 8 and 24 Mbps (megabits per second), but they are heavily affected by your distance from the nearest telephone exchange.
Cable networks, on the other hand, use fibre optic and coaxial cables to deliver superfast broadband services, which are not affected by distance and can reach speeds of up to 152 Mbps.
Finally, fibre connections work through clusters of fibre optic cables and come in two different flavours: fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP).
In FTTC setups, the cables run from the telephone exchange to street cabinets before entering your home, while FTTP's cables connect directly to your home, providing the fastest speeds available on the market.
For context, most FTTC connections in the UK provide speeds between 28 and 76 Mbps, while FTTP can reach up to 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps); that's a 4K film downloaded in a few seconds! In addition to these three types of broadband, there also are satellite and mobile options, but they are less reliable and generally slower than fibre connections (although that can depend on your location).
Mobile broadband is set to improve drastically with the deployment of 5G around the country, but coverage is still patchy, so it may take a while for mobile broadband to become a true alternative to fibre.
What other services can you get with broadband?
There are many broadband providers today that offer lots of additional services alongside their basic internet packages. Perhaps the most common additional services are broadband and landline phone packages. However, some providers now also offer unlimited calls towards both mobiles and landlines, together with vast amounts of mobile data to call family and friends via the internet. To offer competitive deals, broadband providers bundle up a variety of additional services to appeal to potential customers. Of these, perhaps the most popular are deals on TV packages, but mobile phone contract deals and streaming services subscriptions are also hugely popular.
What is a good broadband deal?
Many factors define what can be considered a good broadband package. Of course, speed is the most relevant, as, without a decently fast connection, you won't be able to stream films on Netflix or play online games with your friends.
Price usually goes hand in hand with speed, but there are a few providers who offer substantial discounts on top packages.
For example, Virgin Media's 108 Mbps fibre costs only £28 per month, but if you add £5, you can get the company's Big Bundle, which includes Virgin TV 360 with more than 100 channels.
As a rule of thumb, the best broadband deals are the ones that cost around £30 per month and include both broadband and TV, with speeds of at least 59 Mbps.
What broadband speed should I go for?
If your home has one or two people using the internet to stream TV shows and films or to upload odd photos to Facebook or Instagram, you won't need much more than 5-10 Mbps to avoid buffering.
If you've got a larger family, all of whom are streaming, online gaming, and/or uploading videos to Instagram and TikTok, you're going to want something in the range of 20-40 Mbps. You'll want to consider faster broadband options if you're regularly downloading whole films or games to your devices or you need to upload substantial digital files to the web.
We reckon it's a good idea to get a bit more broadband speed than the bare minimum, though, because if you find yourself stuck in your house for a few months (something we've all become familiar with), it's nice to have a decent connection so your Zoom calls and House Party gatherings can continue without a hitch.
How do I choose the best broadband deal for me?
Once you know what broadband speeds you need and how much you're willing to spend, the next step is to select the best extras for you.
Most UK broadband providers today feature TV deals, but the channels they offer are different. For instance, Sky offers the most channels, but its broadband speeds are slower than Virgin's or BT's. In addition, when picking the right broadband deal for you, you should also consider mobile and streaming services offers.
EE is a good example of this since the company offers several broadband deals, including Apple TV subscriptions, as well as discounts for paying monthly customers.
How to compare broadband deals
To compare broadband deals in the best possible way, you have to assess their value for money. In other words, when comparing a broadband and TV package with another one, you should check which has the lower price for the basic package and how much the extra costs.
For example, Sky's Ultrafast package includes Sky TV, Sky Stream, Netflix and 145 Mbps broadband for £43 per month, while BT's all-inclusive deal costs £20 per month for three months, then £52.99 and offers speeds of 50 Mbps.
As you can see, the prices of these two deals are similar, but while you'll get more channels, Netflix, and faster speeds if you pick Sky, you'll get a free Now subscription included with most BT packages.
What are the most popular broadband providers in the UK?
In terms of speed, Hyperoptic, Three and Virgin Media offer the best deals, but their coverage is not entirely uniform across the UK.
On the other hand, Now, BT and Sky offer the best options when it comes to TV and broadband combos, and don’t forget about phone calls. Many households still have a landline, so a provider offering a combined broadband phone package is going to appeal to many people.
Other popular broadband providers in the UK are Plusnet, Zen, and Utility Warehouse. For a whole list of them and more details about each, you can read our guide on the best UK broadband providers .
Will I get the advertised broadband speed?
From March 2019, Ofcom's updated code of practice requires broadband providers to guarantee a minimum speed when you sign a contract with them.
The code is voluntary, but having said that, most UK broadband providers adhere to it, including BT, Sky, and Virgin, among others.
You just need to keep an eye out for minimum guaranteed speeds when looking at broadband deals with different providers before taking out your contract. If your broadband is slower than the minimum speed after signing up, you can cancel your contract immediately, and it won’t cost you anything in penalty fees to do so.
Can I get fibre broadband?
According to an Ofcom estimate, roughly 12% of UK households were served by fibre broadband at the end of 2019, and their latest research shows this had risen to 52% in 2023. So over half of UK homes now have access to full-fibre broadband – 15.4 million households – a massive jump from just four years ago.
Ofcom states that 97% of homes in the UK have access to superfast broadband, and most households can access ‘decent’ broadband, which they define as at least 10Mbps download and 1Mbps upload speeds.
Most of the fibre packages available are FTTC connections, with FTTP still being the exception. If you want to make sure whether you can get fibre or not, you can use these fibre checkers from Openreach and USwitch .
Which broadband deal is currently the cheapest in the UK?
When it comes to broadband, there isn't generally the cheapest option as it depends on the mb/s you're after in your home and if the provider services your area.
However, if the mb/s doesn't matter to you and you're not broadband-reliant going for an option like Now's 63mb/s package will only set you back £24 a month.
The cheapest option we found is to make use of deals that might not always be available, and that's Three's half-price broadband for 6 months, which means you'll only be paying £11 before it changes to £22, and even then, it remains the cheapest package.
Is it cheaper to get a broadband bundle?
Yes, it generally is cheaper to go for a bundle, offering broadband, TV and even phone services. Basic broadband packages cost on average around £30 per month (though Now starts at £20 per month, including phone line), and TV bundles can cost between £10 and £15 extra each month. For example, Sky's basic broadband package costs £29, but for £43, you can get a bundle that includes TV, Netflix and fast broadband. Shop around before buying, however, and always check the length of the contract you’ll have to sign up for, as well as for extras, such as set-up fees.
Should I get a new broadband deal?
Most broadband deals last for 18 or 24 months, after which you’re out of contract, but unless you switch to a better deal with a new provider or renegotiate with your existing provider, you could well find yourself paying more money each month for the same package. If you do your research just before your contract ends, you’ll find a bunch of great deals that may offer more services and packages while at the same time costing you less each month. Once you’re out of contract, you can speak to your provider about their deals for existing customers or see if they can match the deal you’ve found with their competitor – it’s amazing how quickly costs can come down if they think they’re going to lose your custom.
What happens when my broadband contract ends?
At the end of your contract, your broadband service will likely continue as normal on a month-by-month basis but with a significant price increase unless you do something about it. Many people do not know exactly when their existing contract ends and, therefore, start paying more unwittingly and unwillingly when they could be getting way cheaper deals. Make a note somewhere of when your current contract ends so you’re prepared in advance, and you can shop around for the best deals when you’re out of contract. Alternatively, to check when your contract ends, you can check your account settings on your broadband provider's website or call their customer service number.
How do I switch providers?
To leave your current provider without incurring any extra expenses, you have two options. The first one is if your broadband does not reach the minimum guaranteed speed.
In this case, you can rescind your contract immediately and without any extra charge. The other one is that you must have completed your minimum contract term (when you sign up for a package, you'll often sign on for 18 months or two years), and if you haven't, you might have to pay a substantial fee to end your contract early.
If you're not sure, check your contract to see how much time you have left or if your contract has expired. If your initial contract has expired and you've been moved onto a rolling contract, you should be able to switch providers without any fuss.
But if you've still got some time to go before your contract expires, you could look at upgrading your contract with your existing provider to boost your broadband speed.
Should I choose a broadband package based on price?
Price should be a factor in your choice of broadband provider, but it shouldn’t be the only aspect you take into account before making your decision.
Often, the speed available at your home will be down to the infrastructure of the wiring near you rather than the provider (find out your available speed using a checker, such as this one ).
While price should be one of your primary concerns also take account of your potential provider’s customer service ratings and how long it takes them to install your broadband. We've picked out the best broadband providers if you’re looking for extra inspiration.
What else can I do to get good broadband?
If the speed of your broadband is good, but the WiFi is patchy in your home, it could be worth looking at getting a new router, a signal booster, or a mesh wifi system, which uses multiple routers to ensure a steady internet connection wherever you are in your home.

If you're a subscriber to a TV service, such as Sky, BT, or Virgin, you could get a discounted broadband subscription as part of your package.
For instance, you can get a basic Sky TV package for £26 per month and a super-fast fibre-optic broadband package from Sky for £32 a month (£58 total), or you can get a TV and full fibre bundle for £43, saving you quite a lot in the long run.
