How to pass JavaScript variables to PHP ?

JavaScript is the client side and PHP is the server-side script language. The way to pass a JavaScript variable to PHP is through a request.

Below are the methods to pass JavaScript variables to PHP:

Table of Content

  • Using GET/POST method
  • Using Cookies to store information

Method 1: Using GET/POST method

This example uses the form element and GET/POST method to pass JavaScript variables to PHP. The form of contents can be accessed through the GET and POST actions in PHP. When the form is submitted, the client sends the form data in the form of a URL such as:

This type of URL is only visible if we use the GET action, the POST action hides the information in the URL.

Client Side:

assign javascript variable to php variable in javascript function

Server Side(PHP):

On the server side PHP page, we request for the data submitted by the form and display the result.

Method 2: Using Cookies to store information

Client Side:  Use Cookie to store the information, which is then requested in the PHP page. A cookie named  gfg  is created in the code below and the value  GeeksforGeeks  is stored. While creating a cookie, an expire time should also be specified, which is  10  days for this case.

Server Side(PHP):  On the server side, we request for the cookie by specifying the name  gfg  and extract the data to display it on the screen.

Assign a Javascript variable to PHP variable

Why do we assign a javascript variable to a php variable .

There are many reasons why one might want to assign a Javascript variable to a PHP variable. Some possible reasons include:

-To pass data from Javascript to PHP (for example, to use PHP to process or store data that was entered into a form via Javascript)

-To make use of PHP's built-in functions and libraries from within Javascript

-To take advantage of PHP's faster execution speed when working with large data sets or complex algorithms.

Use document.cookie and $_COOKIE to assign a JS variable to a PHP variable

The document.cookie is used to store cookies in javascript and  $_COOKIE is a PHP superglobal variable that is used to access cookies. We will use document.cookie to store javascript variable value to a cookie and access it in PHP using $_COOKIE .

In the above code example:

  • We have a Javascript variable named  user_name that contains a string value.
  • We are creating a cookie named name in Javascript and assigning it the user_name variable value.
  • In the PHP code, we are getting the cookie using  $_COOKIE['name'].

user image

The first time you log in it doesn't work. If you reload the page everything is fine. This is because php will execute first only then the javascript.

  • Access global variable inside a function PHP
  • Convert characters to lowercase using strtolower() function in PHP
  • Calculate length of a string using strlen() function in php
  • nl2br() function in PHP
  • Return JSON from a PHP script

5 Ways To Pass PHP Variables & Arrays To Javascript

Welcome to a tutorial on how to pass PHP variables and arrays to Javascript. PHP is server-side and JavaScript is client-side, so how do we gel them together?

A quick and easy way to pass a variable from PHP to Javascript is to use the short echo tag. For example:

  • <?php $phpvar = "FOO"; ?>
  • var jsvar = "<?=$phpvar?>";

But there are more ways to do so, depending on the situation. We will walk through various examples in this guide – Read on to find out!

PASSING PHP VARIABLES TO JAVASCRIPT

All right, let us now dive into the various ways to pass PHP variables to Javascript.

YOUTUBE TUTORIAL

EXAMPLE 1) USE PHP TO ECHO JAVASCRIPT

1a) echo javascript code.

Well, this might be a surprise for some beginners, but remember that Javascript is an interpreted language? Yes, we can use PHP to echo a block of Javascript code – It will be interpreted by the browser just fine.

1B) PHP SHORT ECHO TAG TO “INSERT VALUE “

It is a real pain to do echo "var abc = '$xyz';"; every time, so here is a quick convenience in PHP, the short echo tag <?=$PHPVAR?> . Yep, this is equivalent to doing <?php echo $PHPVAR; ?> .

EXAMPLE 2) INSERT PHP VARIABLE INTO HTML FORM

We are still using the PHP short echo tag here, but “inserting” the value into an HTML <input> field and using Javascript to get the form field. Kind of a roundabout way, but this makes sense if you are working with forms.

EXAMPLE 3) USE JSON TO PASS ARRAYS

Sadly, we cannot pass an array (or object) as it is. In this case, we can:

  • Use json_encode() in PHP to turn the array into a JSON encoded string.
  • Good old PHP short echo tag to output the string, but coupled with Javascript JSON.parse() to turn the JSON encoded string back into an array.

Quick extra note and summary:

  • JSON stands for “Javascript Standard Object Notation”. A way to represent arrays and objects as strings.
  • json_encode() turns an array into a string.
  • json_decode() turns the JSON string back to an array.
  • JSON.stringify() turns an array into a string.
  • JSON.parse() turns string back to an array.

EXAMPLE 4) AJAX TO FETCH VALUES

4a) html & javascript.

If you have not heard it, AJAX stands for “Asynchronous Javascript and XML”. In simple terms, sending or fetching data from the server without reloading the entire page. AJAX is very easy to perform, and it is probably deemed to be the most “appropriate way to pass variables”.

  • Fetch data from the PHP script – fetch(URL)
  • Then return the results as text .then(res => res.text())
  • Lastly, do whatever you need with the data .then(data => { console.log(data); })

P.S. Take extra note that AJAX will not work with file:// (directly opening the HTML file in the browser). Use a proper web server with http:// instead.

4B) SERVER-SIDE PHP

On the server-side, just do whatever PHP processing and output it, this will be picked up in the AJAX call – res => res.text() .

EXAMPLE 5) JSON & AJAX TO PASS ARRAYS

5a) html & javascript.

Still remember “AJAX fetch” from earlier? This is the same, except that we tell fetch() to parse and return the results as JSON data – .then(res => res.json()) .

5B) THE PHP

This should be self-explanatory by now, we use json_encode() to output the array as a string.

We are now done with the tutorial, and here are a few links and extras that may be useful.

How to Pass Variable From PHP to JavaScript

  • How to Pass Variable From PHP to …

Use AJAX to Pass the PHP Variable to JavaScript

Use javascript to escape the php scripts to pass the php variable to javascript, use the short php echo tag, <=> inside the javascript to pass the php variable to javascript.

How to Pass Variable From PHP to JavaScript

We will introduce a way to pass the PHP variable to JavaScript using AJAX. This method requests the data from the PHP server and runs on the client machine.

We will also demonstrate another method to pass the PHP variable in JavaScript by escaping the PHP to JavaScript. We write JavaScript after the PHP scripts to escape the PHP.

We will show you another example to pass the PHP variable to JavaScript using the short echo tag in the JavaScript as <?=$var?> where $var is the PHP variable.

We can use AJAX to get the data and variables from the PHP server to JavaScript. This method has separate server-side and client-side scripts. It makes the code cleaner and enhances the code readability. AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. It uses the XMLHttpRequest object to request the data from the server. It displays the data using JavaScript and HTML DOM. This process occurs asynchronously, which means the changes happen in the webpage without the page being reloaded. However, there is latency when AJAX is used over networks because it sends the HTTP request. In this method, we write JavaScript code in the PHP file.

For example, create a PHP file named index.php . Write the JavaScript code inside the <script> tag. Create a vairable req using the var keyword. Create a request object of the XMLHttpRequest() function and assign it to the req variable. Call the onload() function with the req object using the function expression. Inside the function, use the console.log() function to log the this.responseText property. Do not forget to end the function expression with a semicolon. Use the req object to call the open() function. Supply get , get-data.php and true simultaneously as the parameters in the function. Call the send() function with the req object. Create another PHP file named get-data.php . Assign a value of Mountain to $var variable. Echo the json_encode() function with the $var as the parameter.

In the example below, we created a request object with the XMLHttpRequest() function. The onload() function handles the operation to be performed during the response. The open() function specifies the HTTP method, the PHP file that sends the JSON response, and a boolean value that controls the rest of the execution of the script. The json_encode() function in the get-data.php file sends the response in JSON format. Here, we printed the variable $var in the console.

Example Code:

We can use JavaScript after the PHP tags to escape the PHP scripts. We can create a PHP variable in the PH P script. Then, we can write the JavaScript to escape the above-written PHP and pass the variable inside the JavaScript code. Inside the JavaScript, we can use the PHP tag to echo the PHP variable assigning it to a JavaScript variable.

For example, assign a value Metallica to a variable $var inside the PHP tags. Write a script tag and inside it, write a PHP tag. Inside the PHP tag, echo a JavaScript variable jsvar . Assign the PHP variable $var to jsvar . Do not forget a quote wrapped around the $var and a semicolon after it. Close the PHP tag and log the value of jsvar using the console.log() function. Close the script tag. In the example below, we have logged the PHP variable $var in the console using JavaScript. We can see the output in the console of the webpage.

We can use the short PHP echo tag inside the JavaScript to pass the PHP variable to JavaScript. We can use the short PHP echo tag to get rid of the hassle of writing the PHP tag and the echo statement. It is a short-hand method. This method is very much similar to the second method in terms of the concept and the execution.

For example, assign a value Megadeth to a variable $var inside the PHP tags. Open a script tag and create a JavaScript variable jsvar . Write the short-hand echo tag <?=$var?> as the value of the jsvar variable. Log the variable using the console.log() function. We can view the output of the script in the console of the webpage.

How to Pass Variables and Data from PHP to JavaScript

assign javascript variable to php variable in javascript function

As a software engineer, you may find yourself working on a project that requires you to pass data from PHP to JavaScript. This task may seem daunting, but it’s actually quite simple once you understand the basics. In this post, we will cover the different methods you can use to pass variables and data from PHP to JavaScript.

Method 1: Using Inline JavaScript

The simplest way to pass data from PHP to JavaScript is by using inline JavaScript. In this method, you can echo out the data you want to pass from PHP using the echo statement, and then assign it to a JavaScript variable.

Here’s an example:

In this example, we’re assigning the value of the PHP variable $name to a JavaScript variable named name . We’re doing this by echoing out a string of JavaScript code that sets the value of name to the value of $name .

This method is straightforward and easy to implement, but it has some downsides. For one, it can make your code harder to read and maintain, especially if you have a lot of inline JavaScript. It can also be a security risk if you’re not careful, as it can allow for cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks if you’re not sanitizing your input.

Method 2: Using JSON

Another way to pass data from PHP to JavaScript is by using JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). JSON is a lightweight data interchange format that is easy to read and write.

To use JSON, you first need to encode the data you want to pass from PHP as a JSON string using the json_encode function. Once you have the JSON string, you can then pass it to JavaScript using the json_decode function.

In this example, we’re creating an array called $data that contains some data we want to pass to JavaScript. We’re then using the json_encode function to encode the $data array as a JSON string, which we’re assigning to the $json variable. Finally, we’re echoing out a string of JavaScript code that sets the value of a JavaScript variable named data to the decoded JSON string.

This method is more secure than using inline JavaScript, as it doesn’t allow for XSS attacks. It’s also more maintainable, as you can easily add or remove data from the $data array without having to modify the JavaScript code.

Method 3: Using AJAX

If you’re working on a web application that requires dynamic updates without refreshing the page, you can use AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) to pass data from PHP to JavaScript.

To use AJAX, you first need to create a PHP script that will return the data you want to pass to JavaScript. You can then use JavaScript to make an AJAX call to the PHP script and retrieve the data.

In this example, we’re creating the same $data array as before, but instead of echoing out a JavaScript variable, we’re using the json_encode function to encode the $data array as a JSON string and directly outputting it.

To retrieve this data in JavaScript, you can use the XMLHttpRequest object or a JavaScript library like jQuery to make an AJAX call to the PHP script and retrieve the data.

Here’s an example using jQuery:

In this example, we’re using the $.ajax function to make an AJAX call to the data.php script. When the call is successful, the success function is executed, which retrieves the data using the data parameter and assigns it to JavaScript variables.

This method is the most powerful and flexible option, as it allows for dynamic updates and can retrieve data from external sources. However, it requires more setup and knowledge of AJAX and JavaScript.

PHP to JavaScript Data Scenarios

Dynamic Web Pages: When you want to create dynamic web pages where data from PHP needs to be displayed or manipulated in real-time on the client side using JavaScript. This can include scenarios like showing live updates, charts, or user-specific data.

Form Processing: When you have a form on a webpage, and after the user submits the form, you want to use JavaScript to display a success message or handle errors without reloading the entire page. This requires transferring data from PHP (usually after form submission) to JavaScript to update the user interface.

AJAX-Driven Applications: If you’re building a web application that relies heavily on AJAX to fetch or update data without reloading the entire page, you need to pass data between PHP and JavaScript. AJAX is commonly used in scenarios like auto-suggest search, infinite scrolling, or chat applications.

Security and Data Validation: When you want to pass data to JavaScript securely, you should use techniques like JSON encoding. This is particularly important in scenarios where you need to display user-specific data or content fetched from a database without exposing it to potential security vulnerabilities like Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks.

Complex Web Applications: In more complex web applications, especially those built with JavaScript frameworks like React or Angular, you may need to pass data between PHP and JavaScript for various purposes, such as pre-rendering initial page content, handling application state, or updating the user interface based on user interactions.

Passing variables and data from PHP to JavaScript may seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually quite simple once you understand the basics. In this post, we covered three methods you can use to pass data from PHP to JavaScript: using inline JavaScript, using JSON, and using AJAX.

Each method has its own benefits and drawbacks, so you should choose the one that best fits your project’s needs. Whether you’re working on a simple web page or a complex web application, understanding how to pass data between PHP and JavaScript is an essential skill for any software engineer.

assign javascript variable to php variable in javascript function

Before passing a variable from PHP to JavaScript, you need to understand the flow of events when you request a PHP page.

PHP is a server-side language. First, the PHP will execute your .php file to generate the HTML.

After PHP process your code, it will be sent to the client’s browser.

Once the file is served to the browser, PHP can’t access the file anymore.

Since JavaScript runs in the browser, that means JavaScript is executed after PHP.

Knowing this process flow, there are three ways you can pass PHP variables to JavaScript:

Let’s start learning how to perform the three methods mentioned above.

Using echo to pass PHP variable to JavaScript

When you have a PHP variable on the same page as the JavaScript code, you can use echo to pass the variable from PHP to JavaScript directly.

Suppose you have an index.php file with the following content:

When you run the code above, the $name variable value will be passed to the data variable in JavaScript.

To show that is worked, the data value is then assigned as the <h2> tag content. The browser renders the following output:

PHP echo variable in JavaScript

With the echo function, you can output a string by adding the quote symbols (single or double) before the <?php tag above.

If you’re sending an int value, you don’t need the quote symbols:

When you send a PHP array, you need to call the json_encode() function before passing it to JavaScript:

And that’s how you pass a PHP variable to JavaScript by calling the echo function.

Next, let’s see how to use the DOM to pass PHP variables to JavaScript.

Using DOM to pass PHP variables to JavaScript

Sometimes, you may need PHP variables after the user has done an action like clicking a button.

You may also have many PHP variables that you want to pass, and while echo works to send PHP data to JavaScript, you may want a more clean solution.

Besides calling echo function, you can also use the HTML DOM tag to store PHP data.

Here’s an example:

By keeping your PHP data in the DOM tags as shown above, you can then retrieve the data using JavaScript as follows:

This method is similar to using echo directly, but considered more clean since you echo to the DOM instead of the JavaScript variables.

You can also choose when JavaScript should retrieve the PHP data. This is not the case when you echo JavaScript variables.

Using fetch to get PHP data from JavaScript

When you want to separate the PHP template from your JavaScript code, then you can use the JavaScript Fetch API .

Fetch API is used to send an HTTP request, similar to AJAX and XMLHTTPRequest. This allows you to retrieve resources from anywhere on the Internet.

Fetch can be used to retrieve PHP data using JavaScript. Suppose you have a PHP file named data.php with the following content:

Once you have the PHP file ready, create an index.php file where you will fetch the data from.

Add a <script> tag as shown below:

The fetch() function will send an HTTP request to the data.php file.

Then, the json() function will parse the response as a JSON object. Finally, the returned JSON object will be assigned as the content of the <div> tag above.

The output will be as follows:

Retrieve PHP data with fetch

And that’s how you pass PHP variables or data to JavaScript using the fetch() function.

Unlike the other two methods, this method creates an HTTP request, so it will have a delay before the data is fetched.

It’s recommended to use Fetch API when your PHP data requires complex processing before passing it to JavaScript.

To pass PHP variables and data to JavaScript, you need to make the data accessible to JavaScript.

You can echo the data directly to JavaScript variable, or you can keep the data in the DOM before retrieving it using JavaScript Document object.

For data with complex processing, you can create a separate file that processes your PHP data. Any part of your application that requires the data can send an HTTP request to fetch the data.

Finally, you need to treat your PHP data to make it accessible as JavaScript value:

  • For a string , you need to add quotes
  • For an int or number , you don’t need to add quotes
  • For an array or object, call the json_encode() function before passing to JavaScript

Now you’ve learned how to pass PHP variables to JavaScript. Nice work! 🤘

Introduction

In the world of web development, it’s common to encounter situations where you need to pass a PHP variable to JavaScript. This is especially important when you want to dynamically update your web page or manipulate data on the client-side using JavaScript. Fortunately, there are multiple methods available to achieve this. In this article, we will explore five different approaches to passing PHP variables to JavaScript, each with its own advantages and use cases.

Before diving into the methods, it’s important to understand why passing PHP variables to JavaScript is necessary. PHP is a server-side language, meaning it executes on the server before the web page is delivered to the client’s browser. On the other hand, JavaScript is a client-side language that runs directly in the browser. By passing PHP variables to JavaScript, you can access and use data generated by PHP in your JavaScript code. This allows for dynamic and interactive web pages.

Now let’s explore the five methods we can use to pass PHP variables to JavaScript:

Method 1: Inline PHP

One of the simplest ways to pass a PHP variable to JavaScript is by including it directly in your JavaScript code. This method is known as inline PHP. Here’s how it works:

First, you’ll need to declare your PHP variable and assign it a value. For example, let’s say we have a PHP variable called “$name” that holds the value “John”:

Next, you can echo the value of the PHP variable directly into your JavaScript code using the PHP echo statement:

In this example, we’re declaring a JavaScript variable called “jsName” and assigning it the value of the PHP variable “$name” by echoing it within the script tags. The resulting JavaScript code will look like this:

Now you can use the JavaScript variable “jsName” in your client-side code, knowing that it holds the value of the PHP variable “$name”. This method allows you to pass any PHP variable to JavaScript, including strings, numbers, booleans, and even arrays.

The inline PHP method is straightforward and can be used for simple scenarios. However, it’s important to note that mixing PHP and JavaScript in this way can make your code less maintainable, especially in larger projects. Additionally, if your PHP variable contains special characters or quotes, you need to ensure that it’s properly escaped to avoid syntax errors in your JavaScript code.

Now that you understand how to pass a PHP variable to JavaScript using inline PHP, let’s move on to the next method: using JSON.

Method 2: Using JSON

Another popular method for passing PHP variables to JavaScript is by using JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). JSON provides a convenient way to exchange data between PHP and JavaScript.

To use JSON, you’ll first need to convert your PHP variable into a JSON-encoded string. PHP provides the “json_encode()” function for this purpose. Let’s say we have an array in PHP called “$person” that holds information about a person:

We can now encode this array into a JSON string using the “json_encode()” function:

The resulting “$jsonPerson” variable will contain the JSON-encoded string:

Now, we can pass this JSON string to JavaScript and decode it back into a JavaScript object using the “JSON.parse()” function:

In this example, we’re assigning the decoded JavaScript object to the “jsPerson” variable. Now, you can access the individual properties of the JavaScript object using dot notation like “jsPerson.name”, “jsPerson.age”, and “jsPerson.city”.

Using JSON provides a structured and standardized approach for passing complex data types, such as arrays or objects, from PHP to JavaScript. It’s efficient and allows for easy data manipulation on the client-side. However, keep in mind that JSON is not suitable for passing PHP resources, such as database connections, files, or network sockets, as JSON only supports basic data types.

Now that you know how to pass PHP variables using JSON, let’s move on to the next method: AJAX requests.

Method 3: AJAX Request

Using AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) requests is another powerful way to pass PHP variables to JavaScript. AJAX allows you to make asynchronous HTTP requests to the server, retrieve data, and update your web page without requiring a full page reload.

To use AJAX, you’ll need to make a request to a PHP script that processes your data and returns the result. This can be done using the XMLHttpRequest or jQuery’s AJAX method. Here’s an example using the native XMLHttpRequest:

In this example, we’re creating a new instance of the XMLHttpRequest object and using the “open()” method to specify the PHP script we want to call. The “onreadystatechange” event is triggered when the state of the request changes. Once the request is completed (readyState is 4) and successful (status is 200), we can access the response from the PHP script using the “responseText” property. We then parse the JSON response into a JavaScript object and extract the value of the “name” property.

This method allows for more dynamic interactions between PHP and JavaScript, as you can pass variables to the server, perform server-side processing, and return the results to JavaScript. However, it requires additional server-side code to handle the AJAX request and process the data.

Now that you’ve learned about using AJAX to pass PHP variables to JavaScript, let’s move on to Method 4: using hidden input fields.

Method 4: Using Hidden Input Fields

Another approach to pass PHP variables to JavaScript is by using hidden input fields in your HTML form. Hidden input fields allow you to store data that is not visible to the user but can be accessed and used by JavaScript.

To use hidden input fields, you’ll need to add an input element with the “type” attribute set to “hidden” and set the “value” attribute to the PHP variable you want to pass. Here’s an example:

In this example, we’re creating a hidden input field with the ID “phpVariable” and setting its value to the PHP variable “$myVariable”. The value will be echoed directly into the HTML, making it accessible to JavaScript.

Now, you can access this hidden input field from JavaScript using its ID and retrieve the value. Here’s an example:

By retrieving the hidden input field’s value using JavaScript, you can now use the PHP variable in your client-side code.

This method is useful when you want to pass data from PHP to JavaScript within the context of an HTML form. It’s especially handy when submitting forms or performing client-side validation. However, it’s essential to ensure that the hidden input field is properly secured and not tampered with on the client side, as users can modify the value of hidden input fields.

Now that you understand how to use hidden input fields to pass PHP variables to JavaScript, let’s move on to Method 5: passing PHP variables directly in JavaScript code.

Method 5: Passing PHP Variables Directly in JavaScript Code

The final method we’ll explore is passing PHP variables directly into JavaScript code. This approach is useful when you have a small piece of PHP code that you want to execute within your JavaScript code block.

To pass PHP variables in JavaScript code, you can use the inline PHP tags (` `) directly in your JavaScript code. Here’s an example:

In this example, we’re assigning the value of the PHP variable “$myVariable” to the JavaScript variable “phpVariable”. The PHP code within the inline PHP tags will be executed on the server-side, and the resulting value will be included in the JavaScript code when the page is rendered.

This method provides a simple way to pass PHP variables to JavaScript without the need for additional processing or server requests. It’s particularly useful when you have a small amount of data or want to perform a specific action based on the PHP variable value within your JavaScript code.

However, keep in mind that mixing PHP and JavaScript code together may make your code less maintainable, especially in larger projects. Additionally, ensure that the PHP variable is properly escaped if it contains special characters or quotes to avoid syntax errors in your JavaScript code.

Now that you understand how to pass PHP variables directly in JavaScript code, let’s wrap up this discussion.

Passing PHP variables to JavaScript is a common requirement in web development, allowing for dynamic and interactive web pages. In this article, we explored five methods to achieve this: inline PHP, using JSON, AJAX requests, hidden input fields, and passing PHP variables directly in JavaScript code.

The inline PHP method allows for a quick and straightforward approach to include PHP variables in JavaScript code. However, it can make the code less maintainable and requires proper handling of special characters or quotes.

Using JSON provides a structured and standardized way to pass complex data types between PHP and JavaScript. It offers flexibility and ease of data manipulation on the client-side.

AJAX requests allow for dynamic interactions between PHP and JavaScript, enabling server-side processing and seamless retrieval of data without page reloads. This method requires additional server-side code to handle the AJAX requests.

Using hidden input fields is beneficial within the context of HTML forms, allowing for the transfer of data from PHP to JavaScript. It is important to ensure the security of hidden input fields to prevent tampering by users.

Passing PHP variables directly in JavaScript code provides a simple method for executing small pieces of PHP code within JavaScript. However, it should be used with caution to maintain code readability and avoid potential syntax errors.

Each method has its own advantages and use cases, and the choice depends on the specific requirements of your web development project. Understanding these methods gives you the flexibility to pass PHP variables to JavaScript efficiently and effectively.

Experiment with these methods and choose the most suitable approach based on your project’s needs. By successfully passing PHP variables to JavaScript, you’ll be able to create dynamic and interactive web experiences for your users.

How to assign a PHP variable to JavaScript?

PHP tags with single or double quotes assign a PHP value to a JavaScript variable when setting a PHP variable. Several times you might need to put PHP variable values in JavaScript. You may easily echo on the JS variable with a PHP tag if there are only simple variables, such as a string or any integer.

Understanding the sequence of actions when you access a PHP website is necessary before passing a variable from PHP to JavaScript. To create the HTML, the PHP will first run your.php file. Your code will be delivered to the client's browser when PHP has processed it. PHP has no access to the file once it goes to the browser. JavaScript is executed after PHP because it runs within the browser.

Refer to the syntax below each method for the implementation.

You can use echo to transmit a PHP variable directly to JavaScript when both the PHP and JavaScript code are on the same page.

JavaScript variable assigns PHP echo statement. Printing the JavaScript variable gives PHP variable value.

The example works similarly to the syntax. Additionally, integer displays do not require quotes. Array display requires the json_encode function.

Sometimes after a user action, you may need PHP variables. In addition to using the echo method, you can store PHP data in HTML using the DOM tag. This approach is comparable to using echo directly but is cleaner because it outputs to the DOM rather than JavaScript variables.

DOM assigns PHP echo statement. The script reads the DOM to get the PHP variable value.

The example works similarly to the syntax. DOM assigns a string, integer, and array and displays in JavaScript.

Using Fetch API

Use the JavaScript Fetch API if you expect to keep your JavaScript code independent from your PHP template.

Similar to AJAX and XMLHTTPRequest, Fetch API is used to send an HTTP request. You can now access resources from any location on the Internet. PHP data can be retrieved from JavaScript using Fetch.

In contrast to the other two, this approach generates an HTTP request, resulting in a delay before the data fetch.

When your PHP data needs to go through complicated processing before being sent to JavaScript, it is better to use the Fetch API.

Fetch API returns JSON response from another PHP file. The outcome part can print this PHP variable value.

The program runs similarly to the syntax. The fetch callback stringifies the array data from info.php.

Using a short PHP echo tag

JavaScript variable assigns short echo tag. Displaying this variable gives PHP variable value.

The program works similarly to the echo method. The only difference is the short syntax.

Using XMLHttpRequest

To transfer variables and data from the PHP server to JavaScript, we can utilize AJAX. It improves readability and makes the code cleaner.

Due to the asynchronous nature of this procedure, the webpage updates without requiring a page reload. However, latency occurs because AJAX sends the HTTP request when utilized over a network.

XMLHttpRequest retrieves data from another PHP file. The onload function block can display the PHP variable in the response.

The example executes as in the syntax. The responseText in the onload callback displays the PHP variable from info.php.

Using PHP syntax inside script tag

JavaScript variable inside PHP syntax within the script tag contains the PHP variable value.

The program runs as per the syntax. The JavaScript variable in the PHP syntax inside the script tag functions as a normal JavaScript variable. The JavaScript variable assigns the PHP variable value.

This tutorial discussed how to assign PHP variable value as JavaScript. The echo method is simple, and you can use other methods based on the context.

How to Pass a PHP Variable to JavaScript – Easy Way

assign javascript variable to php variable in javascript function

For something seemingly so straight-forward, you would think that the information out there would be a bit better on this subject. Passing a variable from PHP to JavaScript is actually very easy! There are just a couple things you need to keep in mind and some ways to do it to ensure it actually works.

I find that putting the following code into the <head> section of my website is the most foolproof method:

That’s it! You just define the PHP variable first, then echo it into a basic JS variable declaration statement. I know there are lots of ways to define a JavaScript variable, but this is the one I find works in the most circumstances. I’m not an expert here, but most of the others seem to not work a lot of the time.

A few things to keep in mind for this:

1. The PHP variable needs to be defined before the JS one. 2. The JS variable needs to be defined before you actually use it anywhere. This seems obvious, but if you forget this fact and try to put this declaration into the footer of your site and then use it in the content, you’ll find it doesn’t work! That’s why I like to put this in the head section of my website. Or, if you were in WordPress or another CMS, make sure to place it in the header.php file of your active theme.

Additionally, you should be aware that if your variable is not a string and is instead a number, you would want to define it without the quotes around it, i.e.:

Note that as Sherri mentioned in the comments, if you have more complicated strings or any strings with quotes (“) in them, this will break. You’ll want to look into json encoding if needed. But for simple strings and variables, this should do the trick.

Hard to go wrong with any of this. There are of course more complicated ways to use this, but I’m not going to go into any of those here. Let me know if you have any problems!

This just helped me a ton. Thank you!

The scenario:

1. There is a php script which (possibly complemented by a direct written HTML code) consrtucts a HTML page via its echo command, based on whatever algoritmus eventually based on supplementary data from server files or databases.

2. This php script leads to data being saved into string variable(s), which (possibly) can contain arbitrary characters, including control codes (newline, tab…), HTML special characters (&,<…) and non-ASCII (international) characters.

3. These non-ASCII characters are UTF-8 encoded, as well as the HTML page (I do highly recommend) *)

4. The values of these PHP string variables have to be transferred into javascript variables for further processing by javascript (or exposing these values in HTML directly)

The problem:

it is not safe to PHP-echo such variables into HTML (javascript) directly, because some of characters possily contained in them cause malfunction of the HTML. These strings need some encoding/escaping in order to become strings of non-conflicting characters

The solution

There may be a big lot of ways of this encoding. The following one seems to me the easiest one: The PHP variable with unpredictable value can originate from some file, as an example (or from user input as well):

$variable=file_get_content(…)

1. Convert all bytes of that string into hex values and prepend all hex-digit-pairs with %

$variable_e=preg_replace("/(..)/","%$1",bin2hex($variable))

The new variable is now guarantied to contain only %1234567890abcdefABCDEF chracters (e.g. %61%63%0a…) and can safely be directly echoed into HTML:

var variable="” //that’s NOT all folks

But now the value is still encoded. To get the original value of the variable, it has te be decoded: *)

var variable=decodeURIComponent(“”)

The value of the variable is now the same as the original value.

*) I have no idea about non-UTF-8 encoded pages/data, espetially how the decodeURIComponent works in such a case, because i have no reason to use other encodings and handle them as highly deprecatad.

WARNING: this approach is not (generally) safe against code injection. I highly recommend some further check (parsing) of the value depending on the particular case.

P.S. For very large amount of data, I would recomment to save them into file on the PHP side (file_put_content) and read them by javascript via HTTP Request.

I use this approach as it needs one line of code on server as well as client side. I do agree with arguement that not all chaeacters have to be encoded.

Do not enjoy my possibly stupid solution, if you have a better idea

And remember, that whatever variables you add to your javascript, will be visible when anyone uses their browser to view the code in the page.

First, thanks for a great write up. I’m hoping you can offer me a simple solution here. I have to say first that I’m dealing with an ordinary http: page, and I absolutely want to avoid setting up my .htacess file to allow PHP parsing of HTML files (among many reasons, it cases some old browsers to attempt to download rather than display the page!). My page is for my own music, and I use php calls withing HTTP requests to allow visitors to download songs, for example like click here . Things like this work fine (In this case The PHP will find the file and initiate a download ). Now the only thing missing is that I need to be able to retrieve a simple value from the PHP call. For example if I’m checking the authorization of the visitor based on some passed cookie. Since the page itself is .html and not .PHP, the page is not going to be redisplayed, and so an ‘echo’ probably won’t work. Best thing i can think of is having the php write the results I want into a temporary file (on thye server side of course) which I could then read with a javascript XMLHttpRequest(), run within a page wide javascript intervalTimer. This sounds like an awkward rupe goldber approach though. And to make matters worse (maybe) I’m committed to learning to do things in pure PHP and javascript, without loading in jquery, ajax, or other helper libraries.

Why exactly are you using .html pages instead of .php? It seems like it would solve all of your problems just to fix that. And it’s not hard at all to do… Just rename them “.php” and add “ ” to the beginning of the document and “ ” to the end and voila! You’re done. PHP and html work perfectly together. At that point you could add whatever PHP you want to the page, just remember to start each php line with “ “.

' src=

Actually that’s exactly what Sherri was talking about.

Here is the trick :

In my php file, I put this

https://codeshare.io/507Dyn

(My code is on an external website cause I can’t write code here. It gonna expire in 24h… so please modify my reply with the code in it.

And now there is a variable called js_variable that I can use in any javascript.

Thank you all.

Is is possible to do the opposite? I’m trying to update a field in wordpress’ database on a button click. I’ve tryied somethings. But so far couldn’t make it work. Chrome didn’t allowed me to post the code here. But the answer to this question is what I’ve tryied so far. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/51372897/how-can-i-save-the-value-of-a-custom-field-to-wordpress-user-meta-after-alterin

PHP is server-side and happens before the page is rendered, so no. But you could pass the JS variable as a URL parameter or something and go to a new page or refresh the current page to get it.

Stumbled on this while looking for a package to convert php vars to js.

No clue how old this article is…but. Please don’t follow this recommendation. The second your string contains a double quote, it will break. If you want to use other types you have a world of headaches.

A better method is to json_encode the value before giving it to the js.

That may be true, but for my purposes (and likely the purposes of most of the people here), we don’t need to worry about quotes being in our variables. Generally I’m just doing something quick and easy and don’t want to go through the trouble of encoding and doing other complicated things that really aren’t necessary for what I’m doing.

I try to pass something like $array[‘info1’][‘info2’].

But it doesn’t work, my var contain a string.

Here is what I put in my js script :

var data = “”;

My php script is called in the top of the page and the javascript on the bottom.

Maybe it’s linked about what Sherri was talking about. I don’t really know. I’m not good at all at javascript.

How to assign php variable in JavaScript value assign?

Hi everyone, I am currently working on a project where I need to assign a PHP variable value to a JavaScript variable. I have done some research, but I'm still a bit confused about how to achieve this. I would really appreciate it if someone could guide me through the process or provide an example. To give you more context, I am trying to fetch some data from a PHP file using AJAX. Once I retrieve the data, I want to store it in a JavaScript variable so that I can use it for further manipulations or display it on the webpage. Any help or insights would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

User 2: Hey folks, I've faced a similar situation before, and here's how I handled assigning a PHP variable value to a JavaScript variable. Instead of using traditional AJAX, I found it more convenient to use the `json_encode` function in PHP to convert the variable value into a JSON format. Then, I passed this JSON data to my JavaScript code using a script tag. Here's an example to help illustrate the process: In your PHP file, let's assume you have a variable called `$myVariable` that you want to assign. php <?php $myVariable = "Hello, PHP!"; ?> <!-- Embed JavaScript within the HTML --> <script> // Assign the PHP variable value to the JavaScript variable var myVariable = <?php echo json_encode($myVariable); ?>; // Now you can manipulate or display the value console.log(myVariable); </script> By using `json_encode`, the PHP variable value gets converted into a JSON string. When embedded within the script tag, JavaScript can interpret it as a regular string and assign it to the JavaScript variable. Remember to ensure that the PHP file containing the variable is properly included within your HTML so that it can be accessed by the script. This method has been quite efficient for me, allowing seamless transfer of PHP variable values to JavaScript. Let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance!

User 3: Hey everyone, I've come across a similar need in one of my projects, and I found a different approach to assign a PHP variable value to a JavaScript variable that works quite well for me. To accomplish this, I utilized inline PHP scripting within my JavaScript code. By embedding PHP-specific tags in the JavaScript code, I was able to directly assign the PHP variable value to the JavaScript variable without making any AJAX requests. Here's an example to demonstrate this technique: javascript // Initialize the JavaScript variable let myVariable; // Assign the PHP variable value to the JavaScript variable myVariable = "<?php echo $myVariable; ?>"; // Further manipulate or display the value console.log(myVariable); In this approach, make sure you include this script within a PHP file or template where the `$myVariable` is defined. By wrapping the PHP code within the `<?php ?>` tags, the value of `$myVariable` is directly echoed into the JavaScript code. Remember, when using this method, ensure that the PHP file extension remains intact (e.g., .php) to enable PHP parsing. Feel free to give this technique a try and let me know if you encounter any issues or have any questions. I'm here to assist you further!

User 1: Hey there, I've dealt with a similar scenario in the past. To assign a PHP variable value to a JavaScript variable, you can use AJAX to make a request to a PHP file and retrieve the data. First, make sure you have a JavaScript variable ready to store the PHP variable value. Then, using AJAX, you can send a request to the PHP file and get the response. Here's an example code snippet to help you: javascript // Initialize the JavaScript variable let myVariable; // Make an AJAX request to the PHP file const xhttp = new XMLHttpRequest(); xhttp.onreadystatechange = function() { if (this.readyState == 4 && this.status == 200) { // Assign the PHP variable value to the JavaScript variable myVariable = this.responseText; // Further manipulate or display the value console.log(myVariable); } }; xhttp.open("GET", "your_php_file.php", true); xhttp.send(); In this example, replace "your_php_file.php" with the actual path to your PHP file which contains the variable you want to assign. Make sure the PHP file echoes the value you want to assign to the JavaScript variable. You can use `echo` or `return` in your PHP script to send the value back to the JavaScript. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.
